Her debut solo track Fight for This Love stormed to the top of the charts this weekend
And she’s done it. Cheryl Cole has shot to number one in the charts with the fastest-selling single of the year.
Her debut solo track, Fight for This Love, sold a whopping 292,846 copies in its first week of release – and knocked her former protégée, Alexandra Burke, off the top spot.
Alex’s single Bad Boys went in at number one last weekend, and is now the second fastest selling single of the year, after Cheryl’s.
But it hasn’t all been plain sailing this past week for the Girls Aloud starlet.
Cheryl had the nation divided following her hugely anticipated performance on the X Factor, which despite drawing in the highest audience figures in the show’s history, received mixed reviews from fans and critics – thanks to her half-live, half-mimed vocals.
Then, she came under fire once again, following suggestions that the single was a rip-off of the song Lil’ Star by R&B singer Kelis – which of course she strongly denied.
But it certainly didn’t have a negative impact on her sales.
‘I’m just getting over the fact I have recorded my solo record, and now it’s number one,’ the 26-year-old said yesterday.
‘I can’t take this all in. It’s hard for me to put into words how I feel. I have this permanent smile on my face.’
We were never in doubt that she’d scoop the number one spot. Well done, Cheryl!
Cheryl’s debut solo album, Three Little Words, goes on sale today.
