Nestled 2,000 meters high in Oman’s majestic Hajar Mountains, the Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar Resort & Spa is a hidden gem. After a scenic two-hour drive from Muscat, we were welcomed by crisp mountain air and panoramic views of rugged canyons that instantly took our breath away. This isn’t just a hotel; it’s a place that blends adventure, relaxation and authentic Omani culture in a way that feels both unique and deeply enriching.

    Location and accessibility

Opened in September 2024, Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar is IHG Hotels & Resorts first Hotel Indigo resort in the Middle East, setting a new standard for luxury in Oman. The 173 rooms, suites and chalets all offer stunning vistas of the surrounding “Green Mountain,” a UNESCO-listed site that's easily accessible via a scenic drive from Muscat, making it a perfect weekend escape or an extended retreat.

    Iconic design

The resort’s design reflects the grandeur of the mountains, blending modern luxury with Oman's rich heritage. Our suite was a sanctuary, its floor-to-ceiling windows framing the ever-changing mountain landscape, from misty mornings to golden sunsets. For those seeking ultimate luxury, the two floors of chalet accommodations are particularly impressive. Some chalets feature heated infinity-edge pools overlooking the mountains - ours did, to my daughters' delight - while others boast outdoor fire pits, ideal for stargazing on cool mountain nights.

    Wellness centre

The Jala Spa & Wellness Centre at Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar is undoubtedly the resort’s crown jewel, offering a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation that’s as luxurious as it is transformative. Spanning two floors, it’s the largest hotel spa in Oman, and it’s clear that every detail has been carefully designed to deliver an exceptional wellness experience.

The spa uses Mauli Rituals and Ila Spa products - two of my personal favourites. Known for their luxurious and holistic approach to skincare, both brands focus on nourishing the body and mind at once. Mauli’s treatments are rooted in ancient Ayurvedic wisdom, combining therapeutic rituals with the healing power of natural botanicals. Ila Spa, meanwhile, is renowned for its high-performance, organic formulations that aim to rejuvenate and balance. Each treatment incorporates these indulgent products, providing an immersive, restorative experience that feels as much about inner peace as outer radiance. The therapists were outstanding. Also, while I needed my spa time, my daughter went off to the kids' entertainer - who was so much fun and lovely - I couldn't have done without her on the trip.

Another highlight is the Margaret Dabbs pedicure and manicure, available exclusively at the spa. Eliza and I enjoyed some quality mother/daughter spa time together. Having experienced treatments at top nail salons worldwide, I can confidently say this is one of the best I’ve ever had - our nails not only look flawless but also feel nourished and well cared for. Whether you need a quick pick-me-up or a full day of indulgence, the Jala Spa offers an oasis of serenity where every treatment is a chance to truly unwind and reconnect with yourself.

    Food and drink

Dining at Hotel Indigo is truly remarkable, featuring three unique venues, each providing a distinct experience. Vue Rooftop & Lounge quickly became our favourite, offering stunning panoramic views of the canyon, expertly crafted cocktails, and delicious wood-fired dishes. For those seeking authentic Omani flavours, Wadi Habib presents traditional cuisine in a warm, inviting atmosphere. Zaatar, the all-day dining restaurant, boasts a lively ambiance ideal for casual meals and connecting with fellow travellers. One morning, we enjoyed a floating breakfast, and the chef was exceptional in accommodating my specific dietary needs throughout the trip.

    Adventure

For the adventurous, there’s no shortage of activities. The resort offers guided hikes through scenic wadis and abandoned mountain villages, giving you a glimpse into the region’s rich history. One of the most memorable hikes I did led me through terraced gardens and past ancient dwellings carved into the mountainside. With the help of a local guide, I learned about the resilient mountain communities who have lived in these landscapes for centuries.

    Eco-credentials

Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar is committed to sustainability. The design and operations prioritise environmental conservation while celebrating local culture. From the locally sourced ingredients in the restaurants to the traditional Omani textiles in the room decor, every detail reflects a deep respect for both the environment and the surrounding community.

    Weather

One of the standout features of Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar is its enviable climate, offering a refreshing contrast to the heat of Oman’s coastal cities. Nestled high in the Hajar Mountains, the resort enjoys a temperate climate year-round. In the summer months, the high altitude provides a cool breeze, with temperatures significantly lower than in Muscat or Dubai - making it perfect for outdoor activities and hikes. The evenings are crisp and refreshing, making it the ideal time to unwind on your chalet’s balcony or enjoy a starlit dinner on the rooftop.

Winter, on the other hand, brings cooler temperatures and a serene, misty atmosphere that enhances the resort’s sense of tranquility. The crisp air and sweeping mountain vistas are even more dramatic during this season, with occasional rain showers transforming the landscape into a lush, verdant paradise. Whether you’re seeking a summer retreat or a winter escape, the mountain weather ensures that your stay is comfortable and inviting at any time of year.

The clear skies and minimal light pollution also make the resort an exceptional spot for stargazing - whether it’s the bright constellations of winter or the dazzling Milky Way during the cooler months.

    To book

As I checked out at the end of my stay, I couldn’t help but reflect on the transformative experience I had. Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar offers more than just luxury accommodations - it’s a gateway to the raw beauty of Oman’s mountains, the warmth of its people, and the serenity that comes from disconnecting from the world below.
