Until recently it was widely thought that porn was something mainly enjoyed by men, and that women in the main steered clear of it.

But then last year one of the world’s most frequently accessed adult entertainment sites, Pornhub, revealed that 25% of its users were women.

Statistics show that women are contributing more now than ever to the porn industry. The main reason is thought to be the advent of the internet and smartphones, meaning they don’t have to reach for the top shelf in the newsagents.

‘With the internet, and particularly smartphones, the barriers to porn are gone; few were the women with the guts to buy top shelf magazines or rent x-rated films from mangy-looking sex shops, however curious they were about their contents,’ said Nisha Lila Dui in The Telegraph.

‘But having a personal, internet-enabled device means being able to discretely access explicit material – and that’s changed things for many women.’ Pornhub is also now starting to make films that fall into the ‘romance’ category, to draw in teen girl audiences, which typically have more storylines.

‘There’s so much coming out in that genre,’ says Sharan Steet editor of Adult Video News. ‘The people making these films are often women, and they’re deliberately trying to reach other women.’

But while there has been loads of studies into the types of porn that men like and dislike, little has been done to find out what women are really into, until now.

So what do women want when it comes to porn?

Well according to Pornhub, the things that women engage with the most are:

Lesbian

Gay male

Teen

‘For women’

And what is a complete no-no, for women who watch porn? Slate have recently looked into this and found that the following four things have women well and truly turned off:

Fakeness

A lack of storyline

Above the neck money shots

Porn with no foreplay

Ah us girls, we just love to keep it real.
