From metallic and floral prints to classic leather and patent styles, shop our edit of the most on-trend SS16 loafers...
It’s time to upgrade your shoe collection for the new season with this season’s must-have loafers.
Ok, so we admit that this one isn’t exactly a new trend, but for Spring/Summer 2016, the humble loafer has been refreshed and luxed-up with bold new palettes and fabulous prints, textures and embellishment.
The SS16 loafer revival is pretty much entirely down to Gucci’s masterful Alessandro Michele, who has championed the style classic for many a season. But in true Alessandro style, he’s reworked them with dreamy florals, metallics and pastel-hues this season, and created true objects of desire. A firm favourite among the street style stars and fashion editors, this is one trend that’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
The brilliant quality of a pair of loafers is unquestionably their comfort. But their timeless appeal means you can buy and wear now as well as for seasons to come. So far, so good.
Now, there are two schools of thought when it comes to styling this season’s blokey shoes – contrast the masculinity of the look with boldly printed dresses and midi skirts or embrace the androgyny with cropped, ankle-baring culottes, trouser suits and crisp white shirts.
Whether you wear yours to work, at the weekend or on date night for an androgynous spin, the loafer can do no wrong. Dressed up or down, they just work.
Investment style pairs come from Victoria Beckham, Tod’s and Gucci. And although they’re designer, these style classics actually don’t require a loan unlike some of the season’s other key trends. A few hundred pounds will get you a classic pair of shoes that you’ll love for a lifetime – not least because of their comfort but also for their versatility. Even if you’re channelling the new season fashion eccentric, they’ll still work with denim next season too.
But if you’re looking for a more purse-friendly pair, then the trusty high street has come up trumps. Head to Topshop for a classic off-duty style, & Other Stories for something work-appropriate and then Zara for both a statement-making platform pair as well as the all-time classic penny loafer.
Whatever your style, make sure you have a pair of loafers to team with it.
