Six reasons why Parisians do parties better

french party

We know everyone wants to know how to dress more French, but with party season almost upon us, we thought you'd like to hear how you can party more Parisian. Because fabulous, right?

And who better to ask than the uber trendy Jeanne Damas, model, influencer and designer behind the cult classic brand Rouje? Here, she shares her ultimate tips with us.

1. The look

'Whether it’s weddings, parties or Christmas, French girls aren’t into dressing up too much. For weddings, there’s nothing chicer then going down the less is more route, like showing up in a silk shirt and trousers, when everyone is wearing dresses, with their hair in chignons and wearing makeup. The less sophisticated the better.French women are about imperfection, we don’t look for that perfect style. The French myth is really about perfect imperfection, and that’s what is so charming.'

2. The vibe

'You don’t plan a party, it’s more relaxed. Going out clubbing isn’t really a thing, it’s more about released dinners. They are very long, you chat, you drink and you end up dancing all night.'

3. The food

'When it comes to food, again there aren’t any rules. The best dinners aren’t careful planned out, you’ll mix oysters with chicken, have plenty of dishes on the table, French style.'

4. The dress

'For Christmas with my family, I’ll pick out a silk wraparound top, worn with jeans and heels, very simple. But for New Year’s, I love glitter, but it’s all about not wearing it seriously. So I’ll wear them with jewellery for a disco look. Or a velvet jumpsuit with boots.'

5. The people mix

'We love dinner parties to catch up with friends in Paris, the more the merrier. At Christmas, it's all about having down time with me family, it's very relaxed.'

6. The make-up

'When it comes to beauty, French girls are low maintenance. Almost no foundation, maybe a red lip, or a little flick of eyeliner.'

Penny Goldstone

Penny Goldstone is the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire, covering everything from catwalk trends to royal fashion and the latest high street and Instagram must-haves.

Penny grew up in France and studied languages and law at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris before moving to the UK for her MA in multimedia journalism at Bournemouth University. She moved to the UK permanently and has never looked back (though she does go back regularly to stock up on cheese and wine).

Although she's always loved fashion - she used to create scrapbooks of her favourite trends and looks, including Sienna Miller and Kate Moss' boho phase - her first job was at MoneySavingExpert.com, sourcing the best deals for everything from restaurants to designer sales.

However she quit after two years to follow her true passion, fashion journalism, and after many years of internships and freelance stints at magazines including Red, Cosmopolitan, Stylist and Good Housekeeping, landed her dream job as the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire UK.

Her favourite part of the job is discovering new brands and meeting designers, and travelling the world to attend events and fashion shows. Seeing her first Chanel runway IRL at Paris Fashion Week was a true pinch-me moment.
