Blondes 'better girlfriends', brunettes 'better wives'

Scarlett Johansson

The old adage that gentlemen prefer blondes rings true when hunting out a girlfriend, but brunettes are a safer bet when looking for a wife, according to new research.

Men believe blondes make better girlfriends with one in five saying honey-hued tresses give girls a sexier edge and a more bubbly personality.

However, the survey of 3,000 men revealed the male of the species would prefer to marry a brunette because they are more loyal and level-headed.

The poll, conducted by hairdresser Andrew Collinge's company, also showed nearly half of those quizzed believed brunette locks guaranteed a more loving partner.

Collinge commented on the results saying: 'It's always been said that blondes have more fun and men obviously enjoy going out for dates with blondes as well as upgrading them to girlfriend status.

'But when it comes to marriage, men seem to opt for brunettes as they see them as more dependable and down-to-earth.'

He added: 'This is really surprising when you think we're in 2008 and the blonde versus brunette debate is still rumbling on - I'm surprised as I thought men were more modern than this! I'm obviously in the minority as I married a blonde.'

i'm a natural brunette turned blonde. my boyfriend and me started dating when i was a brunette, he says it doesnt make a difference to the person i am and he loves me just as much, no more or less because of the change.

There are very very few natural blondes after the age of 20.

I'm quite happily a brunette who has had quite a bit of fun in the past, but have recently settled.

I may, however, go blonde if I end up going grey (it's safer than the coal, tar, lead, and other nasties in dark hair dye).

This doesn't make any sense. You cannot judge a person's loyalty or level headedness based on their hair color. I'm a blond and my best friend is brunette and with confidence i can say we are both smart individuals. And who ever said blond's are only meant for girlfriends that is just ridiculous. These debates of which hair color is better has got to come to an end!
