Are you feeling depressed today? We know exactly why

The weather's turned and the depression has kicked in, but is it really the lack of sunshine that's changed our mood? According to psychologists the real reason we struggled to get up this morning is because Wednesday is officially the most depressing day of the week.

The Monday morning blues theory has been blown out of the water by scientists who say that the real low-point comes for everyone midweek.

Our mood takes a dip on Wednesday as it is the day furthest away from the weekend - that has either just gone or is coming up and we often feel bogged down with our workload.

Psychologists also found that although we look forward to the weekend, two days off does not actually improve our mood. The research, conducted at Sydney University, indicated that our weekends are frequently dominated by high-energy activities and therefore feel like work.

Professor Charles Areni, who led the research commented: 'Day-of-the-week stereotypes like 'Monday Morning Blues' and 'Thank God It's Friday' are largely illusions.'
