Afro hair is making waves on the catwalk - and, frankly, it's about time.
Hairstyles that haven't previously been embraced by the mainstream fashion world are now popping up everywhere, including the natural afro, the flat-top, defined curls and full-out frizz.We've spotted said stunning locks in fashion shows for labels like Prada, Burberry Prorsum and Celine - and we're posting the hair inspo all over our Pinterest boards.
The black models walking for these brands have seen their stars rise as a result of wearing their hair au natural, with Jourdan Dunn, Karly Loyce and Malaika Firth taking over the fashion world and becoming some of the most in-demand names in the business. And Maria Borges became the first model to rock her natural hair on the catwalk in the Victoria Secret show 2015 which was so exciting.
Because although it may not seem so radical for black models to wear their hair 'out' on the catwalk, when you look back at the fashion world of yester-year and realise it used to be common practice backstage to hide afro hair underneath wigs and weaves, or force it into straight styles using damaging heat and relaxers to get a more 'Euro-centric' look, you can realise why this increase in diversity is all the more important.
Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks and Jourdan Dunn have all spoken publicly about the struggles they've endured with their natural hair in the fashion industry, so it's particularly cool that in 2016, catwalks are showcasing an ever-increasing number of black hair styles for big campaigns, allowing the models to keep their hair its most natural form.
