Olympic superstar Jessica Ennis got a well-deserved hero's welcome in her home town
Sheffield’s streets were packed with fans eager to get a glimpse of its golden girl as Jessica Ennis was handed the freedom of the city this weekend.
The poster girl for the London 2012 games, Ennis, said she was happy to be back home but ‘more than anything it is overwhelming.’
Brimming with local pride, up to 20,000 fans braved the heavy rain and lined the streets to see their Olympic champion.
Addressing the crowd, Ennis said: ‘I cannot believe how many people are here. It goes all the way back.
‘It’s a beautiful city with amazing facilities and this is my home and the place I love.
‘Thank you so much to every single one of you here.
‘If I could thank you all individually, I would. There are so many of you. You’ve been incredible – not just these past few weeks, but the past few years.
‘You’ve always been there to support me. I can’t thank you enough.’
So well deserved, Jess!
