Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince sets cinemas alight with record takings on its opening day
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is set to become the biggest film of all time after a record opening day.
In fact, it wasn’t just a record opening day, but a record opening night, with Warner Bros selling $22.5 million-worth of tickets for special midnight screenings held around the US.
Having officially opened yesterday, in both the UK and the US, producers decided to capitalise on the huge buzz about the movie, and start viewings in America on the stroke of midnight – a stroke of genius as it turned out.
Other blockbusters over the past 12 months have also had successful midnight screenings, with The Dark Knight taking $18.5 million last summer and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen a cool $16 million, but neither can quite compare to Potter’s opening night.
If box office takings continue this way, it will easily out-perform every other film in history.
