While getting down on one knee to propose seems to be the romantic thing to do, it's actually a rather unusual medieval tradition. And it's not the only one when it comes to saying 'I do' - apparently, there's an outdated reason that brides stand on the left (honestly, it's pretty weird).

Yep, there are some strange rules we automatically follow when it comes to getting engaged.

However, one thing that appears to be an important part of a proposal is where it happens. And you may be surprised by the place that has been voted the world's most romantic spot to ask your partner to spend the rest of their life with you.

It may be known as the City of Love, but Paris didn't actually come out on top.

That's right - the glittering lights of the Eiffel Tower aren't enough to take the crown when it comes to the place that people want to hear the words: 'Will you marry me?'

A survey by dating site Elite Singles has found that the best place to get down on one knee is actually Venice. The researchers asked 1,600 people where they believed the loveliest location is and, unsurprisingly, the top five are your typical bucket list destinations.

Paris does come in at second place - but the home of the Gondola pipped the city to the post, and it's pretty understandable - beautiful bridges, boat rides on the water, stunning sunsets and let's not forget the (very necessary) post-proposal ice cream.

The other picture-perfect proposal spots making up the top five are Hawaii, The Bahamas and Fiji.

Other remaining popular proposal places include Bali, New York, Niagra Falls and Sydney. Edinburgh and Las Vegas just missed out on the top ten.

But it's not just about those beautiful backdrops. In sixth place was 'at home', proving that people aren't only interested in saying 'yes' while surrounded by lush rainforest or walking barefoot on the beach.

So there you have it - true romance exists everywhere.
