Author Maya Angelou Dies, Aged 86

The legendary American author and poet has passed away.

Maya Angelou died in her home in North Carolina at age 86, her agent confirmed on Wednesday.

The legendary American author and poet – perhaps best known for her autobiography I Know Why The Caged Sings – had many careers throughout her lifetime. She was also a dancer, actress, professor, playwright, film producer and a human rights activist who worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr.

In 2011, President Barack Obama awarded her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the U.S.
