Exposure to erotic images and films on the Internet is de-sensitising a generation of young men to ordinary sexual encounters. But is this phenomenon causing many to find real life bedroom experiences unstimulating?
A report in the US journal Psychology Today says men in their 20s who regularly surf the net for porn are struggling to perform in the bedroom and blames this loss of libido on a continuous over-stimulation of dopamine, the neurotransmitter that activates the body's response to sexual pleasure.
'In some porn users, the response to dopamine is dropping so low that they can't achieve an erection without constant hits of dopamine via the Internet,' says author of the report, Marnia Robinson.
With internet porn available at the click of a button, 24 hours a day, is over exposure to explicitimagery putting too much pressure on women to meet male expectations in the bedroom?
By repeatedly viewing porn, a paradoxical effect is created whereby the brain loses it's ability to respond naturally to sexual thrills, causing regular porn-users to demand increasingly extreme experiences to become aroused.
