Teenager arrested over honeymoon couple's tragic Antigua murders

Two men have been arrested and charged over the murders in Antigua of newlyweds Ben and Catherine Mullany.

Kaniel Martin, 20, and 17-year-old Avie Howell have been remanded in custody for a week, charged with the murder of the British couple, along with robbery and receiving stolen goods.

The two men, who live in Golden Grove, which is near the resort where the Mullanys were killed, join a 31-year-old woman who is already in custody.

In court to hear the charges brought against them, the pair nodded to confirm their names, with Howell only speaking to tell the magistrate he had no legal representation.

A lawyer representing Martin, however, said he was innocent and would be pleading not guilty.

'Although people have been charged, there is still a lot of work to do and other lines of inquiry that need to be followed up,' detective inspector Mike Cranswick, who is assisting police in Antigua told the BBC.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Royal Antigua and Barbuda police said: 'The investigators have made a significant stride and hopefully this dreadful case is coming to its conclusion.'

The families of Ben and Catherine, who buried the pair in a joint funeral last Wednesday at the same church where they'd exchanged wedding vows just a month earlier, yesterday released a statement saying: 'We were informed this morning of the news from Antigua and we are pleased at how the investigation is progressing.'
