Russell Brand has escaped jail time for an iPhone smashing incident which took place back in March in New Orleans, and has been sentenced to 20 hours of community service instead.

TMZ reports that Brand, who was charged with misdemeanour criminal damage after tossing the iPhone through a glass window during a confrontation with a paparazzo in March and was facing up to six months in jail if convicted, pled 'Not Guilty' to the charges.RUSSELL BRAND AND KATY PERRY'S ROMANCE IN PICTURES On Thursday, he was sentenced to 20 hours of community service (to be completed by 31 August) and $500 in court fees, and according to Brand's attorney, the actor will satisfy his community service requirement by helping those struggling with addiction.

Brand, who split from wife Katy Perry at the end of December, is currently dating actress Jordana Brewster's sister, Isabelle.

While it's good news for Brand that he escaped jail time, does the community service sentence mean the end of his trademark skinny jeans for a while - and a regulation orange jumpsuit instead?
