Four stones of excess weight shortens life new study finds
Being overweight by four stone can shave three years of life, researchers behind a new study have warned.
One million people were examined as part of a study carried out by Oxford University. They also found that those who are extremely overweight could lose up to ten years of their life.
Dr David Haslam, chairman of the National Obesity Forum, said ‘This is a very good study from a first-class institution.
‘Everyone knows that smoking is bad for you and I hope we’ll see the same with obesity.’
Official UK figures show nearly one in four adults is obese and 38 per cent are overweight.
Obesity costs the NHS at least £500million a year to treat.
