Who knew this niche Clueless fashion trend would make a comeback?

So chic

Remember when you first watched Clueless, and Cher inspired you to embrace cute berets (which handily worked well on bad hair days)? Well be prepared to feel very nostalgic, because they are back.

At the Dior SS18 show at Paris Fashion Week last month, models walked down the catwalk accessorised with the most quintessentially French hat ever, paired with Breton tops (bien sûr), blazers and feminine gowns. And I loved it.

It's only been a few weeks since the show, but berets have already taken over Instagram (223k mentions and counting).

Fashion editors and influencers have embraced the trend now that autumn has arrived, and have mixed things up with their casual and dressy wardrobes.

Blogger Emma Hill wore her black beret with a chic black roll neck, grey blazer and jeans, while German influencer Caro Daur, below, jazzed hers up with a fit 'n' flare black dress and ankle boots.

It also looks great paired with another big trend of the season: checks. Wear it with a plaid suit and burgundy ankle boots for a look that's almost too cool for work.

Penny Goldstone is the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire, covering everything from catwalk trends to royal fashion and the latest high street and Instagram must-haves.

Penny grew up in France and studied languages and law at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris before moving to the UK for her MA in multimedia journalism at Bournemouth University. She moved to the UK permanently and has never looked back (though she does go back regularly to stock up on cheese and wine).

Although she's always loved fashion - she used to create scrapbooks of her favourite trends and looks, including Sienna Miller and Kate Moss' boho phase - her first job was at MoneySavingExpert.com, sourcing the best deals for everything from restaurants to designer sales.

However she quit after two years to follow her true passion, fashion journalism, and after many years of internships and freelance stints at magazines including Red, Cosmopolitan, Stylist and Good Housekeeping, landed her dream job as the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire UK.

Her favourite part of the job is discovering new brands and meeting designers, and travelling the world to attend events and fashion shows. Seeing her first Chanel runway IRL at Paris Fashion Week was a true pinch-me moment.
