It's the ultimate mark of commitment for celebrity couples: the red carpet debut. But which duos are still owning the red carpet these days?
For us mere mortals, navigating DTR (that’s ‘define the relationship’ for the uninitiated, K?) situations with whoever you’re dating can be a complicated and cringe-worthy task defined by awkward ‘where are we?’ conversations, uncomfortable party moments – ‘So, what are you two then?’ – and premature use of the ‘girlfriend’ label.
For celebrities, however, the ultimate sign of commitment to your new partner comes in a far more glamorous form: making your red carpet debut together.
Take Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears and their show of dedication by rocking up to the 2001 American Music Awards together, wearing matching denim outfits. Our teenage 90s hearts were convinced they’d go the distance – couples who dress together, stay together after all, right? – but it wasn’t meant to be.
Or Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, who made their first public appearance at the Emmy Awards in 1999, with Jen’s butterfly hair clips and Brad’s wrap-around sunglasses.
Have we mentioned how much we miss the 90s?
For a lucky few however, the momentous red carpet debut can be a relationship game-changer. Just look at Will and Jada-Pinkett Smith who first stepped out hand-in-hand at the 1996 premiere of The Nutty Professor, and are still a red carpet power house to this day.
Posh and Becks, as they were affectionately known back then, made there’s at a Versace store opening in 1999, leather-clad and looking like they’d stepped out of The Matrix. Flash forward 17 years and four beautiful kids later, the two are still looking loved-up on the world’s red carpets.
So without further ado, we revisit some of the celebrity couples that are still going strong on the red carpet, with a look at their red carpet debuts and how they’re rocking it in the present day.
(And p.s. brace yourself for A LOT of *interesting* 90s ‘dos)
Let’s start with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West who first decided to go public with their new ‘n’ exciting thang at Paris Fashion Week in 2012. The two are still making regular appearances on red carpets, just with more Balmain and two incredibly adorable tots later.
Here the couple are, four years later at the Met Gala 2016 rocking matching looks. A lot has happened for the couple in the mean time, including the birth of their two kids – little baby Saint and the utterly adorable North West. As well as one of the most high profile weddings ever in 2014.
A year after they were first rumoured to be romantically linked – having met on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith – Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie confirmed to the world that they were together by rocking up to the glitzy premiere of The Good Shepherd together.
These two are still going strong, ten years later. In that time, they’ve had six children together, supported each other through tough times (including Angelina’s mastectomy), gotten married and starred in another film together.
David and Victoria Beckham’s love story is as brilliant and 90s as it gets. David fell for Victoria (then, Posh Spice) after seeing her shake her stuff on TV back in her Spice Girls days. Fast-forward a few months and the pair decided to go public at this Versace store opening in 1999. The matching leather outfits have, justifiably, become absolutely iconic.
17 years later though and at the British Fashion Awards in 2015 and the pair are still wearing matching black ensembles. We’re into it.
At the 2004 Video Music Awards, a newly-in love Beyoncé and Jay-Z went public with their romance and in true VMAs style, wore matching gold and white outfits.
These days, one daughter, one Lemonade album, and tons more red carpet appearances later, Bey and Jay are still looking fierce in front of the cameras.
After meeting on the set of The Green Lantern in 2011, the two finally got together a year later and married in 2013. Here, at the Costume Institute Gala in 2014, Blake and Ryan were clearly smitten.
Visiting the Canadian Prime Minister in early 2016, these two have since welcome a daughter baby James and according to reports have another on the way.
Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan found love on the set of Set Up.
Ten years on, the genetically-gifted couple are married and have a daughter together, Everly, too.
Chrissy Teigan and John Legend have to be one of our favourite celebrity couples: In one of their first red carpet appearances as a couple, here they are at a Halloween event back in 2008, with Chrissy dressed as Pocahontas and John as a cowboy. Good effort, guys.
Since this photo was taken in early 2016, the pair have welcomed their first child together: baby Luna. She’s adorable.
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi met through mutual friends back in 2001 but made their first public appearance together in 2005 when attending the Golden Globes.
Eleven whole years later and the pair are married and just as in love as ever. Cute!
Sadly it wasn’t meant to be for the double denim duo Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears, but instead JT found love in the form of stunning actress Jessica Biel. Their debut was made on the star-sprinkled Met Gala red carpet back in 2009.
Years later and the pair are married with a son, who was born in 2015.
Making their debut at the 2011 Oscars, these two gave good red carpet right from the get-go.
At the 2016 Met Gala, Jason Statham and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley are now engaged. Congrats, guys!
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett first decided to show the world they were a thing by attending the Nutty Professor premiere in 1996.*
*Most 90s sentence, ever.
These days, and roughly a million funny red carpet moments later – remember when Will flaunted his wife down the red carpet much to the photographer’s amusement? – the pair are married and as a sharp as ever on the red carpet.
