19-year-old track and field athlete Sarah Attar is the first woman to represent Saudi Arabia after completing the 800m at London 2012 Olympics.

Sarah Attar received a standing ovation from the crowd despite coming last in the race and wore a white headscarf as she raced.

‘It’s an incredible experience,’ Sarah Attar told waiting reporters, after she clocked a time of two minutes and 44.95 seconds.

Saudi Arabia courted controversy after they were almost banned from the games for not sending any female athletes.

More recently, conservative clerics took to social networks to denounce the two female athletes competing in the London Olympics 2012, Sarah Attar and Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shaherkani, as ‘whores’ and ‘sinners’.
