To bra or not to bra, that is the question...

To bra or not to bra, that is the question this season. With delicate lacey bralettes peekabooing all over the catwalks and in the red carpet wardrobes of the A-list, here at Marie Claire HQ we can quite conclusively say that yes, it is most certainly time to reveal and conceal.

With the catwalk show season in full swing and award ceremonies almost every night of the week, February is the pivotal month when trends not only emerge but are firmly cemented on our radars and inevitably in our wardrobes.

And this season, it’s time to get to know the bralette. The sporty, stretchy crop top of yesteryear is no more. This time around it’s all about sexy, delicate lace in dark moody palettes and oh-so-pretty silks, satins and floral prints. The prettier and more seductive the better.

On the Dries van Noten catwalk back in September, the entireSpring/Summer 2016 collection was decorated with beautiful floral silk and bright satin bralettes. Worn as eveningwear, they were layered over decorative evening tops and teamed with flowing skits and luxe Pyjama pants. While this may be a bold, glam look, there’s a great styling tip to take away here. Try wearing a colourful bralette over a plain crew neck jumper or T-shirt for a cool new take on layering.

And proof were it needed that this is a trend with staying power was during the recent London Fashion Week. Spied at Topshop Unique, Alexander McQueen and House of Holland but this time with a spin. Instead of being used as a layering piece as they were in the SS16 shows, bralettes for next season will be a firm replacement for a top. A look which has been firmly adopted by the A-list…

Everyone from Kendall Jenner to Maggie Gyllenhaal has got in on the reveal and conceal act. Their way to wear the trend? As eveningwear and most importantly, with a suit. Think of them as a cropped, decorative top to wear under a diner jacket and with high-waisted silk pants.

Whether you go for a black lace number under a black suit like Maggie and Kendall or a pretty top under a floral suit, the A-list way is the way to go. Opt for silky, luxe tailoring and add a flirty lace bralette and some sky-scrapper heels. Take your cue from the stars on the red carpet and opt for sleek hair and minimal accessorises – you want it to look as effortless and undone as possible.
