Obama was joined by his wife Michelle and daughters Sasha and Malia for the service, which took place in the stately Blue Room at noon.

The brief ceremony saw the President take the oath from Chief Justice John Roberts, using a family bible held by his wife Michelle.

After successfully completing the short piece, the President embraced his wife and children, telling youngest daughter Sasha: 'I did it!'.

The low-key event was held to comply with the US Constitution, which rules the first term ends at noon on January 20.

Tradition states that if the 20th falls on a Sunday, a small ceremony is held, followed by the public inauguration on the Monday.

Later today, the President will take his oath for the second time, on the steps of Congress.

This will be followed by a glittering Inauguration Ball on Tuesday, which is tipped to include performances from Lady Gaga and Beyonce.
