The Bank of England has agreed to put Jane Austen on the next ten pound note after Caroline Criado-Perez collated 35,000 signatures arguing the case

Jane Austen will feature on the next ten pound bank note in a groundbreaking move by the Bank Of England this afternoon.

Last month we revealed that the author was a 'clear candidate' to replace Charles Darwin on the bank note in a new shake-up, but nothing had been set in stone by the Bank Of England.

When journalist, feminist campaigner and co-founder of thewomensroom.org.uk Caroline Criado-Perez learned that there were no solid plans to put a femle's face on any new bank notes, she started a petition to change the rules.

Her plea was covered by The Guardian, The Telegraph and on BBC News and generated an incredible 35,000 signatures in a matter of weeks. Caroline said of the move that she 'couldn’t let another decision that airbrushed women out of history pass without challenge.'

And she didn't. Caroline delivered her petition to the Bank and the Head Of Notes (yup, that's a job), agreed to meet Caroline and hear her case.

Caroline said: 'Their decision today is a direct result of the campaign. We convinced them that what we were saying was right - and that what we were fighting for was important.'
