The actor beat off stiff competition from Tom Hiddleston and Tinie Tempah to scoop GQ magazine's coveted title

As Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey, Dan Stevens was always well turned out, and it seems that his off-screen style is just as popular, as he has been voted Britain's best dressed man.

The London-born actor, who left the hit period drama TV series last year and who broke fans' hearts when his character was killed off in the recently screened special on Christmas Day, was crowned 2012's most stylish by GQ magazine thanks to his penchant for sharp suits on the red carpet and his English squire attire on downtime days.

Dan saw off stiff competition from fellow actor Tom Hiddleston, rapper Tinie Tempah, Radio 1 host Nick Grimshaw and the X Factor's Dermot O'Leary (who finished second to fifth respectively) to scoop the top prize in the title's annual best dressed list.

Luther star Idris Elba, heart-throb actor Robert Pattinson, Prince Charles, comedian David Walliams and Burberry pin-up Eddie Redmayne complete the top 10.

Other notable names on the list include Homeland star Damian Lewis (who is a new entry into the top 50 at number 12), One Direction's Zayn Malik (17), James Bond actor Daniel Craig (25) and the newly knighted Olympic champ cyclist Bradley Wiggins, who also went into the history books last year by becoming the first Briton to win the Tour de France (another new entry at 30).
