Downton Abbey returns to our screens on Sunday, which means we'll finally get to find out what happens to our favourite period drama characters as they welcome the roaring twenties.

And while the majority of series four spoilers have focused on Lady Mary and how she'll cope with a newborn baby George following the sudden, tragic death of her husband Matthew Crawley, new pictures show that there may be some happiness on the horizon for another one of the Crawley sisters.

In brand new pictures we can show you today, Lady Edith, played by Laura Carmichael, looks like she could finally be on the path to her happy ending as she cosies up to Michael Gregson (played by Charles Edwards). But it's not exactly the fairytale we imagine she'd planned for. As Michael is in fact, married.

Devout Downton Abbey fans will recognise Michael from series three. The pair took a liking to each other when Lady Edith set off for London to write for Michael's newspaper.

Laura Carmichael tells UnrealityTV: 'Edith’s romance with Michael Gregson is so different from anything we’ve seen in Downton before. It’s quite a modern relationship in many ways…

'He’s somebody she’s met at work and he’s a self-made man, so in that regard, they’re both straying quite far from the ‘old money’ and stay-at-home-ladies route. And I’ve loved filming Edith’s romance.

'It’s lovely to see her in London and away from the stuffy formal confines of the house.'

She added: 'As you’ll see in episode one, it’s quite racy for the times really because you see them dining out together, and of course, he is still a married man. So it’s quite daring and shocking really because she kisses him in front of everyone!'

We. Can't. Wait.
