Nick Grimshaw called in his celebrity chums to make his first show go with a bang

As Nick Grimshaw made his Radio 1 breakfast show debut this morning, he used his celebrity connections - in the form of Harry Styles and David Beckham - to full advantage, to help make his first early-morning efforts go with a bang.

The new breakfast show’s music, which featured an increased eight songs an hour, was peppered with an sweet anecdote courtesy of David Beckham. Nick said he received a very special good luck message from the footballer.

He told listeners: ‘I got a call from an American number and thought “I'm not answering that,” so it went to voicemail. When I picked up the message, I almost drove into a wall. I offered to model his underwear collection for him. He didn't reply.’

There’s not much the new morning presenter could do to top that, but he tried with a phone call to a mumbling Harry Styles. The One Direction singer had been busy recording new videos for the band’s upcoming tour that saw him lounge round a mansion in his dressing gown while having Nandos delivered.

This was followed by a pre-recorded interview with Justin Bieber where Nick was brave enough to accuse the Canadian singer of being ‘bratty’ the previous times they’d met.

Although the DJ wasn’t always so bold, he opened the airwaves with a rather nervous: ‘So, er, this is actually happening.’ Before continuing with a more confident: ‘Good morning, Great Britain. I’m Nick Grimshaw, your brand new breakfast show host – at least until the nation rises up and I get thrown back to night-time.’

That looks unlikely as he’s promised to call the rest of One Direction during his first week as the breakfast show host. That will no doubt ensure the teen audience will be listening (and it's more than likely we will too).
