Russell Brand could be set to pocket up to £20 million from his divorce from Katy Perry, according to reports, after it was revealed the couple never signed a pre-nuptial agreement.

Papers filed on Friday listed 'property rights to be determined,' which suggests their assets will have to be split.

Despite being married for just 14 months, it’s thought the Brit comedian could be entitled to half of Katy’s reported £40 million fortune, under Californian law.

At the time of their lavish Indian wedding, back in 2009, Russell spoke of their decision not to sign a pre-nuptial agreement, explaining: ‘I'm trying to preserve and make it a beautiful thing.

‘Really, love between two people is the most spectacular and ordinary thing in the world. I want to make our wedding just about me and her... I ain't doing no prenup.’

But it seems their relationship wasn’t to be.

Russell confirmed news of the couple’s split late on Friday, after citing ‘irreconcilable differences’ on divorce papers filed at the Superior Court in Los Angeles.

‘Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage,’ the British comedian said in an official statement.

‘I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends.’

It’s not yet clear why they split, with rumours suggesting everything from her constant partying to his jealousy over her fame as the cause.
