Everything we know so far

We know the Met Gala has got a controversial theme for 2018 and all that, but sorry New York, The Fashion Awards 2017 are about to blow it out of the water.

When are the Fashion Awards?

Set at the iconic Royal Albert Hall like last year, the Awards will take place on Monday 4th December, and while it’s too early for a list of nominees and guests, we do know which categories they will be nominated for, and it’s going to be pretty special.

What are the Fashion Awards?

The Fashion Awards 2017 are partnering with Swarovski again, and the brand has already pledged to fund a massive £300k to the BFC Education Foundation, which will help those without the means to pay for tuition fees and living expenses to be part of the future generation of the industry.

Dame Natalie Massenet, Chairman British Fashion Council commented: 'Last year we set the goal of raising £10million in 10 years to educate talented young people. The resounding success of last year’s Awards, as a spectacular gala to honour so many incredible individuals and also as a fundraiser, reinforces that this is a target that the industry supports.'

What are the Fashion Awards categories?

Over 2,000 key industry figures will be part of the panel to vote for nominees and winners, across nine categories, which this year are:

  • Accessories Designer of the Year
  • British Designer of the Year - Menswear
  • British Designer of the Year - Womenswear
  • British Emerging Talent - Menswear (including accessories)
  • British Emerging Talent - Womenswear (including accessories)
  • Business Leader Designer of the Year
  • Model of the Year
  • Urban Luxury Brand

There will also be some recognition awards on the night, which include Outstanding Achievement Award, the Swarovski Award for Positive Change and the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator.

The Fashion Awards red carpet

All the nominees will grace the red carpet, in show-stopping couture dresses and suits. Last year, the likes of Gigi Hadid, Donatella Versace, Alexa Chung, Winnie Harlow, Karlie Kloss attended, so let's be honest, the guest list is going to be major.

Now this is a big deal in the fashion world, so the outfits generally follow suit. Gigi wore a silver jumpsuit with a train by Versace, Salma Hayek wore Gucci, Karlie Kloss rocked a black Stella McCartney dress, Adwoa Aboah wore neon Molly Goddard tulle, and Alexa Chung picked a feathered Prada gown. Expect serious sartorial statements.

Penny Goldstone

Penny Goldstone is the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire, covering everything from catwalk trends to royal fashion and the latest high street and Instagram must-haves.

Penny grew up in France and studied languages and law at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris before moving to the UK for her MA in multimedia journalism at Bournemouth University. She moved to the UK permanently and has never looked back (though she does go back regularly to stock up on cheese and wine).

Although she's always loved fashion - she used to create scrapbooks of her favourite trends and looks, including Sienna Miller and Kate Moss' boho phase - her first job was at MoneySavingExpert.com, sourcing the best deals for everything from restaurants to designer sales.

However she quit after two years to follow her true passion, fashion journalism, and after many years of internships and freelance stints at magazines including Red, Cosmopolitan, Stylist and Good Housekeeping, landed her dream job as the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire UK.

Her favourite part of the job is discovering new brands and meeting designers, and travelling the world to attend events and fashion shows. Seeing her first Chanel runway IRL at Paris Fashion Week was a true pinch-me moment.
