If there's one person to persuade the masses that secondhand sportswear is cool, it's Harry Styles. The musician's longtime collaborator, Harry Lambert, styled him in a notable amount of vintage workout gear sourced from eBay for his recent Runner's World cover shoot, and it has me more convinced than ever that preloved is the way to go if you want to be the best-dressed (and most eco-conscious) person at the gym.

Any excuse to shout about shopping secondhand and sustainable living, I welcome with open arms. I'd say my screen time is 90% Vinted. The Business of Fashion recently reported that UK consumers spent as much as £4.8 billion on secondhand items online in 2025, so I'm not the only one.

But while scouring resale platforms has become commonplace for many of us, particularly when it comes to designer and high-ticket purchases, the athleisure world has yet to completely catch up. Understandably, some people don't love the idea of wearing race day kit someone else has sweated in. But I'm here to tell you that a hot wash and a good detergent can make anything good as new.

Lambert's choice to source secondhand led to some truly distinctive and dopamine-inducing looks, but it also proved that you don't need to turn to fast fashion brands for your workout. Good exercise clothes are made to last - and I often find that vintage pieces look much cooler too.

It's not only athletes that require some serious recovery after exercising—even shorter runs or studio classes can leave anyone with sore muscles that require TLC. Taking care of your body post-workout is just as important as how you prepare for the exercise itself, so having recovery tools that really work on hand is essential.

"The recovery tool market has seen a massive surge over recent years, and it likely will continue to grow. However, it’s important to remember that the academic evidence shows that a hierarchy still exists for recovery, sleep, nutrition and training load. These are then complemented by the tools," highlights Arj Thiruchelvam, running coach and Performance Physique founder with over 20 years' experience in elite sport under his belt.

Taking care of your body around the clock is key to success, but recovery tools can be the cherry on top of a holistic wellness routine. Compression leggings

"Compression leggings/sleeves should be worn immediately after the exercise that caused the muscle soreness and the benefits become greater between 12 – 48 hours post exercise. Whilst it’s unknown how long compression wear should be worn, it appears at least 60 minutes is required with an average pressure of 10-20 mmHg (you’ll find this on some product labels), (Marqués-Jiménez et al., 2016). I recommend Skins Compressive Tights, Series 5. Although not medical grade, this offers SKINS’ highest compression tight. Foam rollers

"Foam rolling, the long standing tool to aid athletes, offers high levels of research (Meta Analyses and reviews) to support its effectiveness. It’s been shown to have moderate increases in range of motion and reductions in muscle soreness. Certainly a good tool to have available for both warm-up and recovery. (Esma Dana et al., 2025). Foam rollers are freely available and there are no real standouts. Personally I like hollow foam rollers because they are slightly more rigid and firmer than traditional products." - Arj Thiruchelvam

Massage guns

"Percussion guns, often referred to as massage guns, do have some evidence behind them although there are still mixed results as a whole. The main improvements are small but appear to improve range of movement, flexibility and reduce pain, stiffness and muscle soreness. It’s well worth considering and may just have a psychological benefit that will aid your next run during a busy marathon period. (Buoite Stella et al., 2024). Theragun / Theragun Pro is considered one of the two industry leaders with a range of variety in their product line, but it is classified as a percussive device rather than just massage grade. This has a greater tissue reach than some of its competitors." - Arj Thiruchelvam

TENS machine

"The final gadget in my recovery toolbox is the use of a TENS machine. The evidence shows that pain and fatigue can be reduced, as well as some improvements in muscular strength. It’s most widely viewed within short term recovery rather than making long-term changes. Powerdot 2.0 has been the smart TENS device I’ve used both personally and with some of my athletes. The main reason is convenience, it takes the thinking and planning out of its use and therefore you’re more likely to use it regularly." - Arj Thiruchelvam

Epsom salts

Epsom salts are my most recommended recovery tool for several reasons, but mainly because of how well they work. I am always achey the day after a Pilates or spin class, often struggling to walk down stairs or sit in my office chair without pain. But when I have an Epsom salt bath after my workout, I wake up the next day feeling brand new—zero DOMS. I'm a bath lover anyway, so the chance to unwind and do good for my body is always welcome. But considering how cheap bath salts are, and the results they provide, it's a no-brainer investment. This formula in particular is supercharged with magnesium for extra muscle soothing benefits.

Compression boots

"I first tested these after my 2021 Boston Qualifying London Marathon, and let me tell you, they were a godsend for sore, most-marathon legs. Now with a more advanced model and developed technology, the boots use a patented Pulse Technology and seven levels of compression, and have been scientifically proven to boost circulation and efficiently move fluids. Not following? At their simplest, they boost recovery and ease muscle soreness. They're certainly an investment, and at present, mainly used by professional athletes. Cold water therapy

"Cold water immersion and the alternating cold-warm water protocol has also been shown to be effective at reducing muscle soreness and perceived fatigue, but there is a strong caveat here. It’s also been shown to reduce or almost entirely blunt adaptation to training. What this means is that your training isn’t as effective and therefore this type of recovery should be limited to tournament like scenarios where there are several races or competitions within a few days, or when fatigue and soreness is simply not manageable (Choo et al.,2022)." - Arj Thiruchelvam

Korean brand RIDAR is undoubtedly one of the coolest glasses brands on the market. Undercontrol

Another Korean brand making waves is Undercontrol, specialising in seriously cool headgear for all occasions. Think sports caps, beanies, brimless hats and more. This particular cap is built to be worn with sunglasses, and has high-stretch elastic back band and a WOOJIN plastic buckle to make it adjust perfectly to your head. Spanish-founded brand Oysho is steps ahead when it comes to athleisure. Elevated basics are something Korean brands do seriously well, and Organic Basics is delivering just the same. On has steadily become one of the most talked about activewear brands in the world, and its high-performance pieces make that entirely justified. Plenty of the brand's designs have a futuristic feel, particularly the collab with FKA Twigs that features standout stitching and unique cuts. Plus, this particular moisture-wicking top can be worn for both workouts and everyday, making it the perfect athleisure investment.

Bandit

Bandit's mix of basics and unusual patterns gives it a very K-inspired feel. Best workout vest

I'm a huge fan of workout tops with bras built in, so I knew I'd be a fan of this before I even put it on. The biggest pro is that it didn't show any sweat patches after a Reformer session (even though I definitely did sweat—a lot) and kept me feeling supported around my stomach too. The layered design is so chic and elevated, making it a perfect pick if you're fed up with plain workout gear but still want to invest in a top with versatility. It's the ideal length for wearing with high-rise leggings, and the adjustable straps mean you can get the fit you need. It also has removable pads, which I like to keep in, but you can take them out if you prefer.

Best leggings

I recently tried On's leggings for the very first time, and they exceeded every expectation. Yes, £105 is fairly steep for leggings, but they stand head and shoulders above my cheaper pairs. They're extremely soft with a barely there feel, they don't roll down, they have ample pocket space, and they're the perfect length for me at 5ft2. They're actually designed for low-impact workouts, but I've worn them for a treadmill session in the gym, and they didn't budge or show any sweat despite this light colourway that I'd assumed would show any moisture.

Best bra

"This bra is my hero product from Oner Active. It's beyond soft, sculpting, and sweat-wicking while also surprisingly supportive for the design style. Impressively, it didn't show or highlight any under-boob sweat that often sticks out in a sports bra. I've been raving about it to friends and family for good reason—once you try, you won't look at other sports bras in the same way." - Ally Head, Senior Health Editor

Best long sleeved top

Gymshark's layering tops are some of my all-time favourites. This one in particular is incredibly versatile—it works for runs, Pilates, HIIT, weights, you name it. And even when I'm incredibly sweaty, it doesn't cling to me or show moisture. It wicks sweat brilliantly and stays comfortable too.

When I ran my first marathon - the London Marathon in April 2018 - carbon plate shoes didn't exist. I trained - and raced - in a trusty pair of Saucony Ride 10's, which were so well-loved come race day, I'd actually worn a hole through the toe.

But all of that changed a few months later when Nike launched Project Breaking2, a "multi-year initiative aimed at breaking the two-hour marathon barrier." The project saw Eliud Kipchoge and two other athletes partner with Nike, attempting to break the two-hour mark for the marathon for the first time in human history.

Not only did the dedicated Nike team meticulously curate pacing strategies, a flat, optimal course, and personalised nutrition for each athlete, but they also debuted the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly trainer technology, too - and so the "super shoe" was born, a science-backed kit innovation designed to make you that bit faster.

In 2017, Kipchoge wore the Nike Zoom Vaporfly Elite 4%, which is widely accepted as the first-ever carbon-fibre plate running shoe and a sport-changing innovation that promised to not only increase energy return, but improve running economy by 4%.

While it took a few iterations of the shoe before sub two was finally broken, Kipchoge stormed to victory - and history - in 2019, becoming the first and only human on the planet to run a sub two-hour marathon in a prototype of the Nike Alphafly Next%.

Now, you'd be hard-pressed to find a shoe that's not carbon-plated on a start line. They've swept into the mainstream over the past five years, with clever innovations and advancements from the likes of New Balance, adidas and ASICS cementing their status alongside Nike. Even Lidl now sells its own carbon plate shoe, the CarbonLite 1.0, a testament to how widespread super shoe mania is.

Need more convincing? The super shoe global market was valued at approximately USD 1.45 billion in 2024, as per Market Growth Report stats, and is expected to grow 27.63% to over USD 22 billion by 2034.

Basically, they're a really great investment if you're a semi-serious runner looking to chip away at your race times and personal bests. The plate acts as a sort of lever, and the specifically engineered foam, a spring, working together to propel you forward and make you faster.

What is a carbon plate trainer?

According to Emma Kirk-Odunubi, a gait analyst, footwear expert, and qualified sports scientist with over 15 years of experience in the running industry, carbon plate shoes are shoes "including the addition of a stiff midsole plate made of carbon."

And they work, how? "By storing energy from the force we drive into it when we land. As our foot flexes through to toe off the curved plate, then propels you forwards - think of it like a spring."

Ultimately, she goes on, the shoe aids in your quick forward propulsion whilst utilising less of your own energy per stride.

Who are carbon plate trainers best for?

According to Kirk-Odunubi, the main pros span their speed. "Research shows that if you're around 4:30/km or faster, you do get a true benefit from the speed you put into the shoe. And even if the science indicates the shoes don't work as effectively for slower runners, we can't deny the placebo effect. Running in a shoe you know is faster can have a positive reinforcement, whether science states it or not."

That said, they're costly - upwards of £200/250 is the norm - but secondly, they can't be worn daily, only for races. "More needs to be investigated, but research indicates that carbon shoes use muscle activation in the lower limb, which could lead to injury."

Best overall:

I've worn the FuelCell SuperComp Elite v5's for my last ten or so races now, and for thousands of training miles. The premium race day design from the brand, they're unbelievably light, uber cushioned, and made for speed.

They were my shoe of choice when I banked a marathon personal best in December (3 hours 13 minutes), a 5km personal best in January (19 minutes), and a half-marathon personal best in March, too (1 hour 28 minutes).

Long story short, they're fast. The carbon fibre plate and ultra-responsive PEBA midsole work together to propel you forward without compromising on balance or grip. They're also super comfortable and not as rigid as other carbon iterations - I have slightly wider feet and have found them spacious and comfortable, and they're never rubbed, caused blisters, or chafed.

The stack height is much smaller than other iterations on the market, but I quite like that - they're less in your face, and it's also easier to stay balanced wearing them (key for if you're a wobbly runner or have weaker ankles).

Most aesthetically pleasing:

The running world was up in arms when sportswear giant adidas launched the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 2 last year. Promising to be the fastest and lightest carbon plate shoe on earth, they market at a casual £450, around £200 to £250 more than most other competitors.

That said, I've long been a fan of adidas' carbon plate offering, and wore their Adizero Pro 3s for my 3.15 Berlin marathon PB back in 2023.

This advanced and redesigned iteration is lightweight, fast, and propulsive. While testing over an eight-mile run, I kind of felt like I had pogo sticks strapped to my feet; they push you forward that much.

Carefully designed to help you run your fastest times ever, I've no doubt they'd be an excellent choice for your next race (if the budget allows). They're ultra-advanced shoes for the most serious, speed-focused runners looking to chip away at that 1% after fully dialling in nutrition, training, and recovery. Also - the colourway is cute.

Only cons to note: the price point is obviously a barrier to entry for some, they are quite loud as your foot touches the floor, and I did find the fit a touch narrow.

Best for speed work

Rosemary Wanjiru won the 2025 Berlin Marathon in 2025 in the adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4's, with Sheila Chepkirui going on to win the 2025 New York City Marathon in the shoe just a month later.

But the shoe isn't just for athletes, and as I mentioned above, adidas has long been a go-to choice for me. I wore an earlier iteration for my 2023 Berlin Marathon Boston Qualifying time and again for a 1 hour 28 Paris Half a few months later.

Their hero race day shoe, the Adizero Adios Pro 4, is a really easy race day wear. Spacious, roomy, and with great energy return, they do exactly what they promise, feeling like a second skin and actively propelling you through your fastest miles.

I also love the range of colourways, the blue ombre above being my current favourite.

Developed with input from an all-star line-up of athletes from Kenya, Japan, and the USA, as well as thoroughly and rigorously tested in adidas' innovation lab in Germany, it's fair to say they put the shoe through its paces prior to launch.

Best for speed:

When I first tested the ASICS Metaspeed Tokyo, I was actually a bit taken aback by how springy the shoe is. A bit like the adidas, they're widely regarded as one of the most elite carbon plate shoes you can buy for race day

With an advanced dual-foam midsole and an impressive, explosive energy return, it's regarded as one of the lightest (163-170g, which is exceptionally light) and most responsive race day trainers you can buy. I tested them straight out of the box and didn't need to break them in, which I know has been an issue for some with previous ASICS designs, plus found the ASICSGRIP outsole instantly impressive (I didn't feel like I was going to fall, even when testing at around 3.45/minute kms and on wet roads).

I did find them slightly less stable than, say, the New Balance SuperComp's, but there's no denying they are insanely fast and well designed. Invest in these if you're serious about smashing your PB's and have your running form and efficiency down, but skip if you're just looking for a speedy shoe for your local Parkrun.

Best for a PB:

You know a shoe is going to be good when world-class athletes like Eliud Kipchoge wear the brand to smash the limitations of human potential. Ruth Chepngetich also wore Nike shoes to set the women's marathon world record of 2:09:56 in 2024, becoming the first woman to break 2 hours and 10 minutes in the marathon. Nike are an industry leader on this front, leading the charge and inspiring other brands to follow suit.

I ran the Chicago Marathon in 2022 in these Nike shoes and did all of my speedwork leading up to the race in them. They're a really cruisey super shoe - they propel you forwards while still providing stability and comfort.

This current iteration is one of the lightest Vaporfly models ever, with a slimmer midsole, thinner outsole, and redefined upper, and you can tell - you kind of forget you're wearing them, but the responsive ZoomX foam provides you with energy through even the toughest miles.

The only con to note: They do wear out more quickly than other models, which is worth bearing in mind, considering the price point.

Best new release:

Before we even get into the technical review of this super shoe, let me tell you - the new hot pink and black colourway is a vibe.

Released in February, the redesigned shoe is a real all-rounder, prioritising stability and durability thanks to its "slotted" carbon plate and SpeedRoll technology. They're also a slightly lower price point than competitors, so are a good option if you want a shoe that performs but doesn't break the bank. Plus, if you're someone who struggles with weak or wobbly ankles or who is taking on a more cobblestone-y course, like the Paris Marathon, they're an excellent, reliable option.

I tested them over a few speed sessions - two on the treadmill, one on the track - and was impressed with their superior grip. The track was rainy when I tested, and I didn't worry about slipping at any point, testament to the design. They're also really comfortable - I wore them straight out of the box and didn't experience blisters or chafing.

My brother absolutely swears by the Nike Alphafly trainers, wearing them for the Valencia Marathon (and the many training miles in the lead up) back in December.

Seriously light, stable, and smooth as super shoes go, the Alphafly 3 has a fully connected ZoomX foam midsole (unlike the Alphafly 2, which featured a split sole). The brand said this promises a smoother transition, and when testing, I came to agree - it's a smoother ride, and also accommodates more runners and a far wider range of foot strikes. I tested over a few speed sessions - again, on both the treadmill and the pavement - and couldn't really fault them, bar them being much more "in your face" design-wise than the more subtle New Balance and ASICS designs. They're bouncy, balanced, and do the job, making you feel fast.

Cons to note: The stack height is big (40mm), and they can be quite loud - anyone who's raced in recent years will likely know of the small "squeak" the shoe can make when the foam hits the ground - but not so much so as to deter you from investing.

Best super trainer without a carbon plate

Last but by no means least, if you're looking for a speedy trainer to see you through faster-paced training miles and races but that's also suitable for easy runs, the ASICS Superblast 3 are a great investment. Still considered a "super shoe", but sans the carbon plate, they offer high-stack cushioning and race-day foam in a shoe you can use day to day, too.

I've been trying mine for around a month now and have found them springy but soft, responsive but a more confident ride. In my opinion, they're a better investment if you want a shoe that does everything thanks to their incorporation of FF Leap cushioning, also found in their Metaspeed range, which makes them less rigid than the carbon plate options on the market.

I reckon they're one of the most versatile "super shoes" currently available, and seamlessly bridge the gap between training miles at a range of paces and race day speed.

For context, running experts advise against wearing carbon plate trainers for all of your runs as they're specifically designed for speed. Not only will you struggle with energy return on slower runs, but you risk overloading your tendons and joints, ultimately increasing your chances of injury. The Superblast 3 promises to be a good middle ground - fast enough for race day, but supportive enough for your steady miles, too.

It's not only athletes that require some serious recovery after exercising—even shorter runs or studio classes can leave anyone with sore muscles that require TLC. Taking care of your body post-workout is just as important as how you prepare for the exercise itself, so having recovery tools that really work on hand is essential.

"The recovery tool market has seen a massive surge over recent years, and it likely will continue to grow. Compression leggings

"Compression leggings/sleeves should be worn immediately after the exercise that caused the muscle soreness and the benefits become greater between 12 – 48 hours post exercise. Whilst it’s unknown how long compression wear should be worn, it appears at least 60 minutes is required with an average pressure of 10-20 mmHg (you’ll find this on some product labels), (Marqués-Jiménez et al., 2016). I recommend Skins Compressive Tights, Series 5. Although not medical grade, this offers SKINS’ highest compression tight. Foam rollers

"Foam rolling, the long standing tool to aid athletes, offers high levels of research (Meta Analyses and reviews) to support its effectiveness. It’s been shown to have moderate increases in range of motion and reductions in muscle soreness. Certainly a good tool to have available for both warm-up and recovery. (Esma Dana et al., 2025). Foam rollers are freely available and there are no real standouts. Personally I like hollow foam rollers because they are slightly more rigid and firmer than traditional products." - Arj Thiruchelvam

Massage guns

"Percussion guns, often referred to as massage guns, do have some evidence behind them although there are still mixed results as a whole. The main improvements are small but appear to improve range of movement, flexibility and reduce pain, stiffness and muscle soreness. It’s well worth considering and may just have a psychological benefit that will aid your next run during a busy marathon period. (Buoite Stella et al., 2024). Theragun / Theragun Pro is considered one of the two industry leaders with a range of variety in their product line, but it is classified as a percussive device rather than just massage grade. This has a greater tissue reach than some of its competitors." - Arj Thiruchelvam

TENS machine

"The final gadget in my recovery toolbox is the use of a TENS machine. The evidence shows that pain and fatigue can be reduced, as well as some improvements in muscular strength. It’s most widely viewed within short term recovery rather than making long-term changes. Powerdot 2.0 has been the smart TENS device I’ve used both personally and with some of my athletes. The main reason is convenience, it takes the thinking and planning out of its use and therefore you’re more likely to use it regularly." - Arj Thiruchelvam

Epsom salts

Epsom salts are my most recommended recovery tool for several reasons, but mainly because of how well they work. I am always achey the day after a Pilates or spin class, often struggling to walk down stairs or sit in my office chair without pain. But when I have an Epsom salt bath after my workout, I wake up the next day feeling brand new—zero DOMS. I'm a bath lover anyway, so the chance to unwind and do good for my body is always welcome. But considering how cheap bath salts are, and the results they provide, it's a no-brainer investment. This formula in particular is supercharged with magnesium for extra muscle soothing benefits.

Compression boots

"I first tested these after my 2021 Boston Qualifying London Marathon, and let me tell you, they were a godsend for sore, most-marathon legs. Now with a more advanced model and developed technology, the boots use a patented Pulse Technology and seven levels of compression, and have been scientifically proven to boost circulation and efficiently move fluids. Not following? At their simplest, they boost recovery and ease muscle soreness. They're certainly an investment, and at present, mainly used by professional athletes. Cold water therapy

"Cold water immersion and the alternating cold-warm water protocol has also been shown to be effective at reducing muscle soreness and perceived fatigue, but there is a strong caveat here. It’s also been shown to reduce or almost entirely blunt adaptation to training. What this means is that your training isn’t as effective and therefore this type of recovery should be limited to tournament like scenarios where there are several races or competitions within a few days, or when fatigue and soreness is simply not manageable (Choo et al.,2022)." - Arj Thiruchelvam

I've long been a New Balance fan - I wear my 530's to the gym and to work, on holiday and at home. On the performance side, the brand also designs some of my all-time favourite training and race day kit - some of their technology is genuinely unrivalled, especially when it comes to running shoes. Take their Fresh Foam X and FuelCell technology innovations, as an example - both cushioning advancements that boost comfort, with the Fresh Foam X for daily mileage and the FuelCell engineered for propulsive, high-rebound speed.

But a bit of history about the brand before I dive into my top picks. Founded by William J. Riley in Boston back in 1906, the brand spent its first 50 years marketing arch supports and orthopaedic shoes specifically for those with foot issues or active jobs.

Best long sleeved workout top:

Made from the same fast-drying technology as the short-sleeved tee above, this long-sleeved iteration is another all-rounder that you'll reach for time and time again for your daily miles. I've tested over long runs, speedwork, and easy runs, and it never disappoints, acting like a second skin and washing well, too.

Best workout shorts:

A sturdy workhorse of a training short, the NB RC shorts are a dream for all-weather training. With a drawstring waistband so you can tailor the fit to your waist and an in-built pant liner, they're adaptive, comfortable, and functional. Plus, the colourways are cute.

This new jacket design from New Balance has gone viral for a reason - it's super elevated, stylish and a treat to wear, too. It keeps you warm and dry with an emphasis on breathability - it's one of the most lightweight jackets I own, and for that reason, I've been wearing it on repeat as a transitional spring essential. I love the drawstring around your hips, so you can tailor the fit, and the hood in case you get caught in spring showers.

Best jumper:

I'm a big fan of oversized, vintage-style jumpers for throwing on over gym outfits or Pilates sets, and this satin-woven pullover from New Balance has become a firm favourite recently. With striped rib cuffs and a soft as butter material, it's ideal for all weathers and will become a versatile staple.

Best everyday running trainer:

Easily one of the buzziest new running shoe launches in the past few years, New Balance's Ellipse exploded onto the scene this month to instant praise. Rapper and chef Action Bronson even fronted the promo, presenting his own "Sneaker Report" and calling the Ellipse "a vibe."

While I was initially suspicious of how lifestyle-focused the trainer looked - it'd look just as good with your office wear as your gym gear, for perhaps the first time in running shoe history - I've been pretty impressed with its functionality. Incorporating New Balance's trademark Fresh Foam X cushioning and a multi-layer air mesh upper, it's a real joy of a running trainer - fashion forward and surprisingly functional.

I tested over a five-mile easy run and a ten-mile long run and couldn't fault them - no blisters, no soreness, just bouncy, seamless strides.

Best running trainer for energy return:

New Balance's Rebel v5 have been my go-to pair of training shoes for a while now, and they're everything you could want in a running trainer - super lightweight, springy, propulsive, and comfortable.

These are a really solid all round workhorse of a shoe. If you struggle with joint pain or are just on the hunt for an extra cushioned, bouncy pair of runners, these are for you - they're one of New Balance's most cushioned pairs on the market. Plus, as someone with wide feet, I found them spacious and comfortable - no blisters here.

While I loved the cushioning - I'm a runner who likes extra bounce with every step - that said, some users felt the bounce compromised the shoe's stability. This wasn't an issue for me, however, but it is one to be mindful of depending on your specific shoe requirements.

Best trainers for speed work:

Last but by no means least, these carbon plate race day trainers from NB have become my go-to race day shoe - recently, I've worn them for Valencia Marathon, and Maidenhead, Battersea Park, and Reading Half Marathons. Ultra-lightweight, boosted by a carbon fibre plate, and complete with an ultra-responsive PEBA midsole, they're everything you could want in a speedy trainer and more.

No word of a lie - these almost instantly stole the top spot in my list of favourite race shoes. Designed after years of research on the "perfect" race shoe, I can't really fault them. Am I such a fan that I already know I'll be wearing them for my upcoming marathon in December? Watch this space...

Do note: They run slightly small and don't have as big a heel stack as other rival competitors. They also get muddy and mucky quite quickly, due to the white colourway. But that's me really splitting hairs...

If there's one person to persuade the masses that secondhand sportswear is cool, it's Harry Styles. Any excuse to shout about shopping secondhand and sustainable living, I welcome with open arms. I'd say my screen time is 90% Vinted. The Business of Fashion recently reported that UK consumers spent as much as £4.8 billion on secondhand items online in 2025, so I'm not the only one.

But while scouring resale platforms has become commonplace for many of us, particularly when it comes to designer and high-ticket purchases, the athleisure world has yet to completely catch up. Understandably, some people don't love the idea of wearing race day kit someone else has sweated in. But I'm here to tell you that a hot wash and a good detergent can make anything good as new.

Lambert's choice to source secondhand led to some truly distinctive and dopamine-inducing looks, but it also proved that you don't need to turn to fast fashion brands for your workout. Good exercise clothes are made to last - and I often find that vintage pieces look much cooler too.

I recently tried On's leggings for the very first time, and they exceeded every expectation. Yes, £105 is fairly steep for leggings, but they stand head and shoulders above my cheaper pairs. They're extremely soft with a barely there feel, they don't roll down, they have ample pocket space, and they're the perfect length for me at 5ft2. They're actually designed for low impact workouts, but I've worn them for a treadmill session in the gym and they didn't budge or show sweat. Being both petite and curvy, finding workout leggings that are the right length, don't roll or slip down, don't dig in or cause discomfort, and wick sweat well enough often feels like searching for a needle in a haystack. But that hasn't stopped me from trying. I've sampled countless brands over the years, regularly reviewing the best workout leggings money can buy. The latest on my hit list is On's Studio Leggings, and I think I might have finally found my forever pair.

With campaigns fronted by Zendaya and a collaboration with Spanish fashion house Loewe under its belt, On knows a thing or two about elevated sportswear. But truly great kit doesn't just look the part - it performs on all fronts too. But On also has a huge range of super technical workout gear that leaves no detail overlooked. Think ultra-soft finishes, seam free designs, and handy storage too.

After wearing the Studio Leggings for several weeks for Pilates workouts, lengthy walks, cycling, studio classes, and even just lounging around, I can confirm that they are worth every penny. Made for low impact sessions and designed without front seams to maximise comfort and minimise distractions, the buttery fabric feels incredibly high quality. Here's exactly why I'd recommend this pair to anyone.

On Studio Leggings: My review

Fit

Above all, the fit of a pair of workout leggings is the one thing I scrutinise. Even though I primarily do low impact forms of exercise, I won't compromise on the right inseam length and a high rise fit that won't move.

I'll admit that when I first opened my On leggings, they looked pretty small. But the stretch is seriously impressive, meaning there was no uncomfortable squeeze or the fear of seams popping. I followed the size chart measurements, and can confirm they come up exactly true to size. I'm not exaggerating when I say they basically slipped on - no need to jump around whilst pulling them up or battle with clingy fabric. But despite that, they still have a lovely level of compression that makes you feel sculpted in just the right way without cutting into the waist or ankles.

The high rise fit sits just above the belly button, which is my ideal cut. It can be worn with longline sports bras or cropped tees comfortably, but it also isn't too bulky to be layered with longer tops if you prefer.

But best of all, the 7/8 length means they have the perfect inseam for me. Zero bunching at the ankles or having to roll them up - they hit just at the right point on the leg.

Quality

Made from four way stretch, you get serious flexibility with the Studio Leggings. You've probably heard the description 'buttery' associated with sports kit, but these really live up to that title. I can really feel the difference between this pair and my budget leggings, mainly through the finish of the fabric that has plenty of give and elasticity.

It's made from the brand's softest fabric yet, SenseTec™, which feels light, soft, and mouldable, but the high quality is evident. Made from 73% recycled Polyamide and 27% elastane, you've got the right amount of stretch on offer.

I tend to avoid light coloured leggings as much as possible, both for fears of see-through-ness and huge sweat patches appearing. Surprisingly, these leggings have neither issue. Although they're lightweight leggings, they're thick enough not to showcase every drop of moisture.

I can also confirm that they don't lose their shape, or change after going in the washing machine. They bounce back into their original form, and still feel brand new after several wears. Yes, they're some of the pricier leggings on the market, but there's a noticeable difference between these and the £30-£40 models.

Design

Aside from the aforementioned fit, there are several design aspects that make the Studio Leggings a cut above the rest. I often find that the features I value most are the simple ones that will make any type of workout that little bit easier. Namely: pockets.

With a spacious phone pocket on the right hand side, there's space for your mobile and a small set of keys. Or, if you prefer to hold your phone, you've got room for a little snack, mini water bottle, or your headphones.

I also appreciate that there is no front seam, which both looks more sleek and makes for a more comfortable high-rise fit. The back and leg seams offer reinforcement and support throughout the leggings, but without getting in the way of your movement.

More than anything, the minimalist design just looks good - the Heron colourway adds a sophisticated hit of colour to my workout wardrobe, but there's also black and pink shades to choose from.

Performance

In terms of performance, they're designed specifically for low impact exercise. Now, I'm no long distance runner, but I did wear the Studio Leggings for a Reformer class, session on the treadmill and gym floor, and a HIIT-style movement class - and they performed equally as well in each case.

Except for sports bras, I tend to ignore the recommended use for pieces of kit. I regularly wear low-impact leggings for all sorts of exercise, and I've never had a problem. What are Pilates blocks used for?

"I primarily use blocks to support alignment," says Mahama. "For example, they can be placed under the head in side-lying positions to maintain proper spinal alignment and prevent unnecessary strain.

"I also use them to help with better lower-body alignment. Placing a block between the knees can activate the inner thighs and help guide the legs into a more balanced and stable position. The latest addition to my yoga pant collection - and my current favourite - is this Vuori pair of straight leg trousers. Although they're designed more for lounging and low-impact walks, they work great for slower gym sessions and yoga, too. The material feels thick and high quality without trapping heat, and they're moisture wicking, which comes in extremely handy for me as someone who runs hot. In my opinion, the foldover waistband is just the right thickness, and it can be further folded to your liking. If flares aren't totally your thing but you're after something less form-fitting than regular leggings, there's no going wrong with these.

Most breathable

We regularly rave about BAM at MC UK, and that's not about to stop. I recently tried out some of the brand's yoga pants and was seriously impressed with how lightweight they are - it almost feels as if you've got nothing on. I spoke to Physiotherapist and coach Kim Johnson, who is also co-founder of Move Well gym in London, and biomechanics advisor for women-first running shoes, QLVR, to find out more about the technology behind vibration plates. However, "they are unlikely to produce meaningful muscle growth, cardiovascular improvements, or fat loss when used in isolation," says Johnson.

Francesca Bagshaw, Performance Physiologist at Nuffield Health Manchester Institute of Health and Performance, also agrees that "they are great equipment for those with limited mobility, for recovery and for warm-ups."

How should you use a vibration plate?

"Short, consistent sessions work best," says Johnson. "Most people benefit from five to 15 minutes, used alongside a broader training routine. Effective uses include warming up before strength training or Pilates, muscle activation exercises such as squats or split squats, low frequency recovery work after exercise, and gentle movement on low energy days," she says.

Sam Quinn, Personal Training Lead at Nuffield Health, recommends the following:

• To warm up: You can use vibration plates to stimulate your muscles and nervous system and help increase joint range of motion before you exercise.
• To cool down: Vibrating plates can help to relax the muscles, reduce muscle soreness and increase range of motion whilst stretching.

Are vibration plates worth the investment?

"They can be worthwhile if expectations are realistic," explains Johnson. "Vibration plates are not a replacement for strength training, cardiovascular exercise, or traditional bone loading activity. However, they can be a useful complementary tool for warm ups, recovery, and low impact muscle activation.

"They tend to be most beneficial for people with joint pain, fatigue, or low confidence around traditional exercise, as well as those returning to movement after injury."

January is the time that many of us go full steam ahead with workout classes and gym sessions, but it's easy to fall out of routine by the end of the month. No judgement here - I'm guilty of it, too. But my remedy for easier exercise without compromising on the burn comes in the form of home workouts, specifically using versatile and affordable home Pilates kits.

If you're taking a mat Pilates class, your instructor will likely be keeping an eye on your form. That's why I typically go for a vest and shorts combo, so it's easy to check I'm holding my body correctly and doing the exercises in the right way. I have Vuori's Daily Layered Tank in a green colour way and I would say I wear it more than any other top for Pilates. That's because it has a built-in bra with a breathable honeycomb lining and removable soft cups - which means I don't need to wear a sports bra underneath it. Mat classes tend to be gentle enough for this top alone, and it works for gym sessions too.

Moreover, the fabric of both the top and shorts is unbeatably smooth. It feels like butter against the skin, which means I never feel uncomfortable - even in sweaty mat sessions. The only downside is that the straps aren't adjustable, but I haven't yet found that to be a problem, even with a larger chest.

Although I do often wear flares to Pilates classes, sometimes they can be slightly inconvenient when using equipment or a Reformer. That's why I particularly like wearing them for home workouts - firstly because they won't get in the way, but also because they offer a looser fit that I prefer to wear when I'm at home. I was slightly worried that the scoop neck would sit too low on me or not provide enough coverage, but it fits perfectly true to size. Made from a blend of bamboo viscose, organic cotton, and elastane, these pieces from the brand are incredibly breathable and soft - essential for any Pilates workout. I always leave my classes sweaty, but any items from BAM have prevented that wet, sticky feeling you can sometimes get.

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say - finding the perfect sports bra has felt like a lifelong mission. As a Shopping Writer who tests workout gear for a living, I've tried a fair few over the years. But each design with adequate support normally resulted in an uncomfortable underband, and each style that didn’t cut off my circulation wouldn’t provide enough hold for a lengthy workout session.

On a complete whim, I invested in Gymshark’s Ruched Sports Bra - mainly because it was affordable and I'd seen rave reviews. Spoiler alert: five years on, it's still one of my all-time favourites.

It's easily the most worn and reliable sports bra in my fairly extensive collection - but more on that, below. Because my checklist for a good bra is simple: it needs to hold me in, feel comfortable, sweatwick, and wash well, too. The brand might be known for making some of the best workout leggings, best gym layers, and even best yoga flares, but trust me when I say: this is the one product not to be missed if you're yet to find your holy grail sports bra.

Gymshark Ruched Sports Bra: My review

Support

The first thing I have to mention is that this bra is advertised as offering medium support, but I haven’t found that to be quite accurate. I've worn it for countless different activities - running, HIIT, weights, and Reformer - and it's performed equally well for each.

I love that it gives me more than enough hold and support for intense workouts, mainly thanks to the adjustable straps, which mean I can make it as tight as I need to feel comfortable. Not just that, but these also mean that I can loosen it up for Pilates for a more roomy, breathable feel.

The thinner straps made me doubtful, at first - would they offer enough hold without cutting into my shoulders? Or would the bra just look good and not actually perform? Reader: They more than do the job. Combined with the thick under band, it does just what it needs to without any bulkiness over your back. Another brilliant thing about this bra, if you hadn't already guessed - it just looks good.

Style & fit

Plenty of other sports bras I’ve tried perform well, but look... well, awful. And here at MC UK, we're all about finding designs that are both fashionable and functional.

I know that appearance might be low on some people’s priority list, but I always get a better workout in when I feel good, too. With a ruched front, crossover back straps, and a smooth finish throughout, the Gymshark Ruched Sports Bra looks much more elevated than your typical high-performance sports bra.

And in terms of fit, it runs completely true to size according to the brand's measuring guide. However, I would say that there is room to size down if you want a bit more compression and hold. Thanks to the stretch, you can be flexible to get a fit that you're most comfortable with.

Material

The material feels smooth and soft against the skin with a buttery finish, and it's thick enough to keep you held in without being too bulky. I'm a big fan of the bra's material for this reason - it's never caused discomfort or overheating, sweat-wicks well and offers all-important breathability.

Made from 78% polyester and 22% elastane, it's incredibly stretchy too. I have a few other bras in my collection that are a nightmare to get on and off due to how much hold they provide - particularly after a sweaty workout. Gymshark's Ruched Sports Bra is so easy to slip on and off with zero discomfort (a real essential, when you're sweaty post-class and need to strip and shower, stat).

Quality

One of my biggest pros of this bra, though? It hasn't lost its shape over time, which some lower-quality and price-point gym kit can do. There's nothing more discouraging than investing in gym kit that quickly loses its hold, shape, or clean smell - and I can guarantee this Gymshark design doesn't do that.

I've had my Gymshark bra for around five years now, and honestly? It's as good as the day I bought it. I’ve washed it too many times to count, but the logo is still fully intact, the material hasn’t snagged or bobbled, and it has held its shape perfectly. Considering the price point, I'm amazed - hence why it gets such a high rating from me. And if you're still in any doubt, I’ve even been known to wear it in favour of a regular bra on the weekend or even to the office.

Although I can continue to talk at length about what makes this sports bra a cut above the rest, the best thing about it is its simplicity. It’s supportive, comfortable, high quality, and affordable, which is just what a good sports bra should be.

Best Gymshark leggings

"I’ve been testing these during strength training sessions, and I have to say - as someone who usually opts for buttery soft leggings, I’m actually a big fan of the stretchy, more compressing fabric," says Troy Pryde. "It's breathable and moves well during workouts. The sculpting waistband and the rear ruching make them super flattering, and they’re a comfy fit. I’ll definitely be keeping them in my gym rotation."

With a ruched bum and V-shaped waist, they also help to add shape. Plus, they're modelled here on someone who's 5ft3, so they're pretty petite friendly too.

"I am incredibly picky when it comes to workout leggings; as someone who does high and low-intensity workouts almost every day, there is a long list of requirements my kit needs to fulfil," says Piza. "For starters, they must be buttery-soft, sweat-wicking, and not too long on my 5'4 "frame. And I'm proud to say, these Gymshark leggings have surpassed all expectations."

These leggings are made from Gymshark's softest material, and they're also totally squat-proof. However, some reviewers note that they come up slightly small - so if you're between sizes, it might be best to go up.

I love nothing more than flared leggings, and this is one of the most comfortable pairs I own. The material is just thick enough to keep me feeling supported without being compressed or uncomfortable, and the cross waist keeps me secure without any digging in around my middle. I will say they're best suited for workouts like Pilates or strength sessions in the gym, just so that the material doesn't get in the way.

Best Gymshark sports bra

I rave about this sports bra constantly. I bought it while I was at university, and it's yet to be dethroned as my all-time favourite. Not only does the ruched fit look great, but it's incredibly supportive on my larger chest despite only claiming to be medium support. I've worn it on runs, to the gym, for Reformer classes, on hikes - everything. I've washed it countless times over the years, and it hasn't faded, changed shape, or bobbled at all in that time.

The adjustable straps provide the perfect fit, and they never cut or dig in. The stretchy fabric also makes it a breeze to get on and off, even when I'm sweaty. The only downside is that the padding can feel slightly bulky, but it's removable, so that's not really a problem.

Best Gymshark tops

"This is a very easy throw-and-go top for the gym, Pilates, or any other low-intensity workout," says Piza. "Its slightly scooped sides make it a bit hard to do high-impact workouts if you're larger-chested. However, in terms of function, style, and practicality, it's a no-brainer in my repertoire."

With a second-skin feel and internal shelf bra for a little extra support, it's a versatile vest to have on-hand for any workout session.

"I’ve really gone back to basics with gym tops this year, but finding a fitted no-frills cut as someone with big boobs can prove quite difficult as they usually roll up mid-workout," says Troy Pryde. "But this is long enough to tuck into your bottoms (hurrah), and it’s also really lightweight. I also like the low scoop neck detail at the front - a little extra oomph for a simple gym tee."

"This is hands down the best base layer top I've ever worn," says Piza. "I simply layer it over a sports bra and wear it everywhere, and I mean everywhere. This top has come with me on runs, to the gym, dog walks, to the office, and on date nights. You name it."

With a snug thermal fit in a lightweight material, this long sleeve is ideal for winter workouts - especially outdoors. It's also sweat-wicking, so it can be trusted to withstand even the most intense sessions.

Another uni purchase, this long-sleeve shirt has also been in my wardrobe for years. I used to wear it all the time for running, but now I love it for winter workouts in the gym or outdoor hikes. It has a compressive fit that hugs me nicely, and I love the thumb holes to keep my hands warm. However, it's not so thick that I overheat or feel too held in. Breathable and sweat-wicking, it ticks almost every box. However, it does have a longline fit that I know some people don't like, but I love that it keeps me covered and never rides up.

Best Gymshark jacket

"If you need an extra layer now that the weather has dropped, this lightweight zip jacket is perfect for runs, walks, or to throw on over your Pilates leotard," says Troy Pryde. "The shallow collar is particularly useful if you’re wearing it during a workout (making it chafe-free), and there’s enough stretch and compression to give it a snug fit."

Best Gymshark joggers

I have these joggers in a different colourway that's no longer sold, but they're just as good in every colour. Although I usually don't like a more tapered leg, these still feel roomy enough to throw over leggings on my way to the gym or just wear when working from home. They've stayed soft even after being washed, and they haven't shrunk or lost any stretch around the waistband. For the price point, they're a great, simple pair of everyday joggers.

Testing process for the best exercise mats

As someone who runs marathons for fun, I personally test all of the sports bras, workout leggings, running shorts, and general fit kit that ends up in these round-ups.

With exercise mats, the ones that made the edit had adequate cushioning, didn't move mid-workout, and didn't cost the earth, either. Plus, we looked at the top-rated mats according to customer reviews to find out which are truly five star purchases. Spoiler alert: I don't think something you stand on to workout should cost a bomb, so do recommend the lower price point options (Decathlon and Adidas) if you're on a tight budget.

The above didn't stain, get too sweaty or slip, all essentials when spending your hard-earned £££ on kit. We tested for the following:

I find the fabric to provide just the right amount of compression without digging in, and the high waistband cuts at just the right point to pair with cropped tops. The only downside is the small size range, which I'd love to see expanded in the future.

I have been eyeing up this Oner jacket for the last few weeks, and it's still top of my wish list for the season. Ally Head, Senior Health Editor, agrees: "Having tested these socks for a few years now, I rely on them as a fail-safe option for Pilates, Barre, or ballet-inspired workouts," she says. I love the mixture of cherry red with lavender in these pairs that gives the trending colour a new edge.

I can’t recall a time the UK has looked so sporty. It’s hard to tell these days whether someone’s on their way to pitch to investors, walk the dog, or run a marathon, such is the ubiquity of athleisurewear.

I’m no exception, which is why I'm constantly on the hunt for the best sustainable activewear brands. I buy some kit second-hand (my favourite zip-pocket vest is from TRAID), but after swapping outdoor bootcamps for indoor classes, I’m not ready to look like Stig of the Dump in a mirrored Pilates studio.

Here’s the sobering bit: however fit I get, my leggings will outlive me by hundreds of years. Most are spun from polyester, nylon and elastane - all plastic polymers made from oil and virtually indigestible to the natural world. There’s no “away” when it comes to plastic fashion, or any plastic. Studies have estimated that 79% of plastic produced so far is still with us and weighs the same as one billion elephants.

Almost every pair of leggings ever made is still out there somewhere, slowly fragmenting into microfibres that drift through air, water and, increasingly, our own bodies. Further research from The Waste and Resources Action Programme suggests synthetic leggings might lose their stretch after a year or two - and while we might chuck them before then, the material itself will persist for centuries.

Tackling the billion-elephant-sized problem

Big-name sports brands talk about sustainability, but few have a joined-up plan for tackling this billion-elephant-sized problem. They keep churning out products without credible systems for collection or recycling, and less than one per cent of plastic textiles are recycled globally.

In short, the footprint of a pair of leggings begins long before your first squat or spin class. So I’ve been hunting for alternatives to those oily, compressive yarns from petrochemical plants — without sacrificing performance or style.

Tala, founded by Grace Beverley, is one of the more convincing players. The focus is on reducing plastic waste and overproduction through small-batch manufacturing, transparent supply chains and long-lasting pieces designed to outlive fast-fashion trends. Backed by the same investor as Me+Em, Tala has an eye for quality and detail — though it remains to be seen whether small-batch ideals can survive now that the brand has opened physical stores.

Then there’s Silou, the achingly Instagram-ready label co-founded by model Tatiana Kovylina and Phoebe Greenacre. It’s not (yet) plastic-free, but the brand earns points for using recycled polyamides and producing ethically in European factories. The aesthetic is elevated, the cuts are built to last, and the focus is on low-waste production rather than disposable style.

If you’re willing to skip leggings entirely, Community Clothing’s Organic Athletic range — from Patrick Grant of The Great British Sewing Bee fame — is the refreshing, plastic-free alternative. It’s a fun, unisex lineup of vests, T-shirts and sweats made entirely from natural, biodegradable fibres and manufactured in British factories. It proves performance doesn’t have to mean plastic, but it does mean shorts.

Going global, Pangaia’s 365 and Motion Series ranges use a head-spinning mix of bio-based and plant-derived materials — from seaweed fibre and organic cotton to bio-nylon — all aimed at cutting plastic dependence and textile waste. Pangaia’s scientists are betting on next-generation materials that could one day replace fossil-based synthetics altogether.

Apologies for sprinting through these brands – we could debate their strengths and contradictions all day long, but I wanted to leave room for one standout: BAM. To my mind, this is the label truly giving unsustainable sportswear a proper run for its money.

BAM takes its name from founder David Gordon’s early-noughties light-bulb moment - discovering, on a fashion-buying trip to China, that bamboo wasn’t just soft and silky but a genuinely technical fibre. Fast-forward to now, and we have a full activewear label built around the idea that your leggings shouldn’t cost the earth. BAM’s signature bamboo viscose is naturally breathable, antibacterial and fast-growing, needing no irrigation or pesticides. Crucially, it’s a plant-based alternative to plastic fibres like polyester or nylon, giving you stretch and performance without shedding microplastics every wash.

They’ve since widened their fibre palette, blending in responsibly sourced wool (RWS-certified) for its natural wicking power in cooler-weather pieces, and experimenting with organic cotton, TENCEL™ and recycled elastane.

There are synthetic fibres too — and this is where it gets fascinating. BAM’s ‘73 Zero’ label marks products eligible for free take-back and recycling, designed specifically for circularity. The brand partners with Pure Loop in Kettering, which operates a machine capable of recycling pure polyester donations from the Salvation Army into new yarn pellets. Because blended fabrics can’t yet be processed, BAM designs its 73 Zero leggings using pure polymers, making real recycling possible. If this sounds a bit pie in the sky, I’ve seen the machine and held the resulting pellets - on an unrelated visit - so I know this works.

Can we recycle our way out of fashion’s climate mess? No. But the fact that you’ll soon be able to send your worn-out BAM leggings back for genuine regeneration feels worth celebrating - perhaps even with ten burpees.

After years of bulky watches and old school pedometers, prayers for a chic fitness tracker were finally answered in the form of the best fitness rings. You've almost certainly spotted the thick metallic bands adorning the hands of workout enthusiasts and celebrities, including Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow, and they're only growing in popularity.

Oura Ring

The Oura Ring is probably the most well-known fitness ring on the market. Delivering insights into sleep, activity, recovery, heart health, and stress, it boasts impressive functionality. It's water resistant up to 100m/328 ft, has eight days of battery life, and delivers very accurate measurements.

Emma Pereira, Head of Stretch & Reset at online women's running coaching collective, PASSA, wears the Oura Ring generation 4 in silver. "Mostly I love its ability to track recovery levels, sleep and my cycle, too," she says.

"Beyond the daily stats and check-ins, it does helpful quarterly reports, offering another chance to helpfully remind me of the good/bad habits I’ve built up in that time. The app is really simple to use (the crown feature is an added bonus if you’re the competitive type ready to hit all the activity and recovery goals) and helpfully shares general insights on overall health (my top fave is the cardio age predictor).

"Like other rings, removing it to charge is a downside, but it holds battery well, reminds me with 24 hours to go before it needs a charge, and then charges to 100% in a few hours."

Ultrahuman Ring

Lillie Bleasdale, Founder & Head Coach at PASSA, has been wearing the Ultrahuman Ring Air in Bionic Gold for the last few months. "I've been mainly using it as a way to track my sleep as I don't like sleeping wearing a smart watch," she says.

Unlike the Oura, you don't need to pay for the Ultrahuman app, which is a huge benefit. It's ultra-light for comfortable wear, and tracks sleep, steps, distance, calories, sports and more with six days of battery life.

"I've found the app interface really easy to navigate and really useful for comparing sleep metrics day to day and helping me to ensure that I'm staying on top of enough recovery as an athlete," says Bleasdale. "I've also found it really useful to have a monitor of my resting HR and HRV to indicate that I may be overworking or putting my body at risk of illness.

"The only negatives I'd say are having to remove the ring to charge, and if I've forgotten to do so during the day, then sometimes I'm unable to sleep with it on overnight. I also have to remove the ring when lifting weights in the gym in order to stop scratching, etc."

Samsung Galaxy Ring

Samsung's Galaxy Ring may be slightly less well-known than Oura and Ultrahuman, but it offers plenty of enviable technology. With seven days of battery life, three sensors, and AI-powered data analysis that provides health insights, it promises a lot. Monitor your sleep, activity, heart rate, and general wellness with the easy-to-use app.

"The ring works very well - I love that I don't have to wear a watch for tracking any more. The sizing kit is very useful, but do make sure you wear the ring for a minimum of 24 hours to make sure you've got the correct size. The charging case is the perfect size to throw in your bag. Overall, the ring appears to be fairly accurate and is giving similar stats to my FitBit Versa 2," shares one reviewer.

However, it's worth being aware that it is only compatible with Androids - not iPhones. This limits who can use it, but there is the added benefit of no subscription fee.

Both Ally and I are proud owners of the AllTheFeels™ Bra, and I love it so much that I regularly wear it in place of a regular bra. It is made with the signature soft Vuori fabric, which means there is zero rubbing or digging in. Unlike many sports bras, it doesn't restrict my breathing when I squeeze it on - it's stretchy enough to slip on and off without excessive elbow grease.

I love that there isn't bulky padding in this bra, but it's still thick enough to provide support and coverage. However, there are no adjustable straps, which means that if you have a larger bust it doesn't provide a lot of lift or hold - it's best suited to low impact workouts rather than HIIT or running. As a big Pilates fan, it's ideal for me.

Best Vuori top

This layered tank top is a newer release from the brand, and it didn't take long for it to become my most worn sports top. It sits somewhere between a tank top and a sports bra, with a padded under layer and longer, looser top. Not only do I love how stylish this piece is, but how functional it is too. It allows me to forgo a sports bra so I only have the one top on - great news if you tend to overheat in the gym and hate the feeling of multiple layers.

Although the straps aren't adjustable, I've found that the neckline cut offers more than enough coverage for me to feel comfortable wearing it to the gym without anything else on top. It sweat wicks beautifully and keeps me held in place when I need it, and keeps me cool without being too revealing. A true winner.

Best everyday Vuori leggings

I really do rave about these leggings at any given opportunity. They are the softest and stretchiest in my collection, and they are a true joy to wear for lounging around in. They offer unmatched flexibility which makes them ideal for Reformer Pilates when I need to be able to move around, and they don't dig in around the waist or slip down at all (even during higher intensity sessions).

One thing to note is that they don't offer any compression, which may not be to everyone's taste. However, if you've always found workout leggings uncomfortable, too tight, too thick, or just restrictive, these are the antidote. They would probably get my vote as my favourite pair of leggings in my collection.

Best colourful Vuori leggings

I am a huge proponent of flared leggings, so it was only natural that I add these to my collection. Being petite, it's very tricky to find leggings that work for my leg length and don't bunch up around the ankles. That hunt becomes even trickier with flares that can't be rolled up. However, Vuori offers three different leg lengths in this style, and customers all rave about how well they work for shorter people.

After committing to swimming every other day, I went on a mission to find swimwear that I felt confident in but also functioned properly for a pool workout. "Another of lulu's workout shorts designed specifically with running in mind, I rave about these shorts to anyone who will listen for their comfort, durability, and storage options. With a flattering and comfortable high-rise fit, an anti-ride design so they stay in place for every mile, and pockets on each thigh, plus three waistband pockets too, they're great for racing or runs where you need to take plenty of essentials with you but don't want to wear a hydration vest or belt. Need more convincing? I've worn them for three marathons now and can't fault them," says Ally.

"Yep, you guessed it - I'm a huge fan of running shorts, and can honestly say lulu designs some of the best on the market. The Hotty Hot shorts were some of the first I owned from the brand, and I love that they offer more coverage and are made from a thicker material than their super-lightweight Fast & Free split shorts. These don't have a split design but still offer an excellent range of movement, plus more coverage. I feel held in, supported, and confident every time I wear these shorts (so much so, I wore them for my wedding morning run in June). Again, they offer a built-in liner, pockets (a zip pocket in the seam plus a secret stash pocket in the liner) and handy reflective details for if you're running in the dark," says Ally.

The Align designs from lulu are designed for yoga, but will work for any kind of workout, really - again, they're butter soft, sweat-wicking, and supportive. Grace Lindsay, Marie Claire UK's former e-commerce writer, bought the shorts after loving the Align leggings so much. "I particularly like the fit of them, as a lot of cycle shorts can look too long on my legs, but because these come in different leg lengths, I've found a pair that are just right. The best bit is that the hidden waistband pocket can fit my card or key, so I don't have to take a bag with me," she says.

Likewise, Rachel Lopez, senior instructor at BLOK, is also a big fan. "These six-inch shorts are my go-to in the summer, for hot dynamic Pilates classes, or for when I'm teaching back-to-back classes, so will be getting hot and sweaty," she says. "The material is figure-hugging but breathable, and they're especially great when you feel bloated during your menstrual cycle thanks to the butter-soft fabric."

Ally says, "This is the perfect hoodie. I've had mine for around a year now and it still a. looks brand new and b. feels as soft as anything. I love that the design is cropped (it sits just above my belly button, FYI, and I'm 5ft2) and looks great worn with gym leggings or jeans. "A lightweight, breathable essential designed for speed and making you feel your most confident, I've found myself wearing this lulu tank on repeat for gym and treadmill sessions that I know will be high intensity. It sweat-wicks impressively and feels like a second skin - as they say on-site, it "takes lightness to a new level." I'm a big fan of how easy it is to wear, how well it washes, and the airy fabric panels and back cut out for airflow and keeping you cool," says Ally.

"I love every iteration of lulu's Swiftly Tech tees - they have full and cropped lengths, long and short sleeves, and a wide range of colourways - but this long-sleeved design is my personal favourite. It's everything you could want in a winter workout tee - unbelievably breathable, soft to the touch, and cosy while also being breathable, durable, and designed for movement. I wear mine almost weekly, and for the 5km run I did with friends on the morning of my wedding, a testament to what a fan I am of the design. Of course, if you've got bigger boobs or need more support, you might need a sports bra underneath, too - our boobs are subject to immense force when we exercise, so it's important to wear the right support. They also come up a little small, so try sizing up."

"One of the newer designs from the brand, the Go Further bra, which was tested by a team of ultramarathoners over lulu's six-day Further event in 2023. Specifically designed for running and high-impact training and tested over gruelling and record-breaking distances, it's impressively supportive, breathable, and compressing, too, without feeling constricting. I'm a particular fan of how comfortable it is, with straps padded for extra comfort and soft foam inserted under the bust for cushioning. Most high-impact bras are restrictive or end up digging into my shoulders or ribcage, but not this one. It really is a game-changer," says Ally.

What more could you possibly want?" says Ally.

"Keen to invest in a wind, rain, and weather-proof jacket that also looks elevated? Look no further, because lulu's cinch waist design really does tick all of the right boxes. It sits at a great length (I'm 5ft2"), fares well in windy or wet conditions, and looks flattering with both shorts or leggings. I've worn it for long runs, to Pilates, and for hikes - it's incredibly versatile and a great investment buy," says Ally.

"Winter workout fans, listen up: this gilet will change your life. Yes, I mean it - and that's coming from someone who always seems to be training for marathons during the winter, so spends hours working out outdoors each week. I love the slim fit, flattering design and how much I wear it for both workouts and everyday life - it's ideal for throwing on for frosty walks around the park or hikes, too," says Ally.

Garmin Vivoactive 6

I was previously an Apple Watch user, and I never expected to say this, but I'm a total Garmin convert. I've received so many compliments on this watch thanks to the modern watch face and chic pink colour way that sets it apart from other fitness trackers. It's also much more lightweight than other smart watches I've worn. But by far the best thing about the Vivoactive 6 is the battery life - my first charge lasted me two whole weeks of consistent wear, which allows me to keep it on at all hours and get very accurate stats.

I love that it's water resistant and you don't need to set it to a certain mode before jumping in the swimming pool, and it has all the key functions I need (steps, heart rate, sleep, workout tracking, alarm clock, notifications, etc) for my daily routine. The touch screen is also a very handy addition that makes it even more intuitive to operate.

The only thing I've noticed is that the smart alarm feature isn't the strongest, rarely waking me up before my actual alarm, but it's not a huge issue.

Garmin Venu X1

"At almost £700 per watch, this is a significant investment - but it would seem the Venu X1 delivers. Launched in June 2025, the Venu X1 is, quite literally, hot off the press. According to the brand, its USPs are that it's exceptionally lightweight (I can attest to this) and the ultra-large display, alongside the features you'd expect from preloaded maps and workout stats to health insights, including sleep and stress data."

"First and foremost, its sleek design sets it apart from my previous running watches, and it's the most comfortable watch I've ever owned. Practically speaking, it ticks a lot of boxes, too. You can listen to music via the built-in speaker, as well as pay for your post-run coffee and pastry, all while making and receiving calls and texts, should you wish. I also have to commend the battery life: I found that it lasted well, and certainly lived up to its touted eight-day life; however, you have to make sure that the display isn't in always-on mode, as this will drain the battery."

The Venu X1 tracks my runs and other workouts efficiently for the most part, and it churns out some interesting data. My Monday tank and shorts have become my ride or dies over the last month or so, surviving Pilates, the gym floor, and my first foray into weightlifting.

I fell in love with this tank as soon as I put it on. It looks incredible and offers great support for low-impact workouts. However, as someone with a larger chest, I'd be careful when wearing it for cardio or intensive gym sessions where you could slip out. The colour is absolutely stunning, it's very stretchy and doesn't dig in anywhere, and it has a chic enough cut to be styled up with jeans in the evening if you so desire. I have this beautiful blue, and it does a great job of not showing huge sweat patches despite how light it is - probably due to the thick, quality fabric that isn't easily penetrable.

As mentioned, Monday doesn't just offer fit kit. The Rio dress is one of my favourite pieces by the brand, and there's almost nowhere I can't wear it. The stretchy smocked bodice is such high quality - it offers brilliant hold that means I don't need to wear a bra, and the skirt is so lightweight and airy. It is ever so slightly long for me, but I just fold the top inwards and it's undetectable. It's become my one non-negotiable when packing for holidays because the black and white combo is just so chic.

"We know, we know - this isn't activewear per se, but it is easily the nicest dress I've ever owned. It's unbelievably good quality, thick, easy to wash, and easy to wear, plus it doesn't need ironing or steaming pre-wearing, making it really simple to style and throw on. I love my little wrap top for travelling to and from exercise classes, and I know it'll come in so handy during autumn when I need an extra layer. It's simultaneously thick and breathable, and the adjustable fit means it hugs the body perfectly with plenty of room for tying it different ways. The thicker ties mean they don't cut into my waist or restrict me too much, which is common with thinner straps. I'm also a big sucker for thumb holes, which this one has.

I would recommend sizing up if you want to wear it as a top on its own - I stuck with my usual size which fits well, but I definitely need a sports bra or top underneath to make it appropriate to leave the house in.

If you're after fashionable and functional swimwear, you've found it. This swimming costume has beat out the rest of my collection to become my favourite and most worn. It's taken me from the beach in Barcelona to my local swimming pool for an intensive workout, and it withstood both brilliantly. The stretchy fabric makes for such a comfortable fit that doesn't dig in on the bikini line or bum, and it has a higher cut that makes it look even more chic without compromising on coverage in the back. It isn't cheap, but the quality speaks for itself. I know this is one I'll wear for years.

I have worn these shorts at least once a week since I got them (or as often as I can wash them). Not only do I love cobalt blue activewear at the moment, but the shorter inseam makes them ideal for my height without being too short or causing chafing. I love the high-waisted fit, particularly because the waistband conceals a handy little pocket for my keys to go in when I'm on a walk or travelling to the gym.

They've survived multiple squat sessions and ensure I don't overheat when working out in the warmer months. The only downside is that this colour can show sweat marks, but I've honestly hardly noticed it, and I'm a pretty sweaty person.

"I've tested literally hundreds of pairs of workout shorts in my time, and these really are top tier. They're sweat-wicking, supportive, stylish, and don't ride up or roll down during long runs or squats at the gym, which is surprising, given that they're a slightly shorter length than I'm used to. A bra version of the Zion tank top, this is easily one of the most stylish sports bras I own. It offers great support and pairs perfectly with my cobalt shorts for an effortless summer co-ord that works for almost any workout. The padding and structured underbust keep me feeling securely held in, and it's so comfortable I've worn it with my regular clothes too. Just be aware that the straps themselves aren't adjustable, only the back, so they may stretch over time. But for right now, this hasn't been a problem for me - it still holds me up well with no slipping.

"Monday also designs tonnes of high-quality swimwear, and I've personally tested the Palma top and bikini bottom. While it's a fairly standard triangle design, it has impressive staying power - I've worn for swims in lakes, the ocean, and pools, and never had to rearrange mid-stroke or encountered any unfortunate slips. I'm willing to bet that the majority of running sunglasses you've seen online are from Hystride—and for good reason. "A newer brand to the running sunglasses scene, Hystride have been making waves in recent years thanks to their well-designed and affordable shades. I first saw them on fashion influencer and friend Polly Sayer's Instagram—she wore them for much of her London Marathon training earlier this year—and knew that if they were Polly approved, they'd be cool," shares Head.

"These were the first pair of running sunglasses I ever owned, and they've been by my side for most of my major races of the past ten years. I wore them for the London Marathon, Chicago Marathon, and Berlin Marathon, and banked my half-marathon personal best in Paris in them, too. Fair to say they've been tested thoroughly, then—and I can confirm that they truly are top tier in terms of comfort, staying in place remarkably well and allowing you to focus on the workout at hand," shares Head.

"Hear me out on this one—because while these aren't specific running sunglasses, they are great for short to mid-length runs. When testing, I've found that they offer a good amount of coverage on your face and stay in place well, too. I probably wouldn't wear them on race day, but I do love throwing them on for runs that will end in brunch or pastries with friends," says Head.

Best slim running sunglasses

Another pair of lifestyle glasses that have seen our Health Ed through plenty of runs, these understated Le Specs are small and easy to pack in your bag on sunny days.

Head shares: "Again, these Le Specs shades aren't specifically designed for running, but I've found they're a great option for slightly elevating a running look, if you're someone who likes your kit to be functional and fashionable. Head shares: "Keen to invest in some running shades but put off by some of the price points? I get it. Decathlon actually have a great range of sport-specific sunglasses on offer, including these ones. While they say they're designed specifically for cycling, I've run in mine loads and they come Ally-approved—they have UV protection in the lenses and are comfortable and lightweight to wear, too.
