Why Go?

Combining Portugal’s sun-kissed coastline with a contemporary, welcoming setting, the Kimpton Atlântico Algarve offers a blissful wellness escape, exquisite local cuisine and sweeping oceanfront views year-round. Here’s why a visit should be on your list.

The Vibe

Although I consider myself well-travelled, I had never visited Portugal—until this year. After 26 years, my first visit needed to be memorable, and the Kimpton Atlântico Algarve, part of IHG Hotels & Resorts, delivered precisely that.

Located just an 11-minute drive from Albufeira, the five-star property features a restorative health suite, exquisite interiors and a carefully curated selection of onsite restaurants designed to delight every palate.

Upon walking into the hotel's reception, the tone for my entire stay was immediately set. The bright, high-ceilinged and airy space evokes an instant sense of calm, while the cohesive, modern interiors reflect the resort’s distinctive style throughout.

This extends to the rooftop bar (more on that later), the communal spaces, the spa, and, of course, the bedrooms. The placement of the resort above a small stretch of beach strikes a perfect balance between privacy and openness, with ample space for every activity.

The Wellness Hub

Although this is a hotel that would suit those who love to lounge by the pool and almost nothing else for an entire week (my usual MO), the wellness hub is a real standout feature.

The hotel’s wellness hub, tucked in the basement, spans an impressive 1,800 m² and is carefully designed to cater to every need. Minimalist, sleek and immaculate, it provides a serene environment in which to rest the mind.

Guests can enjoy a hydrotherapy circuit, complete with sauna and steam room, alongside indulgent spa treatments such as massages, body wraps and facials. Or, for the more active-inclined, there’s a cycling studio, a fully equipped gym, a private exercise room equipped with interactive workout technology, plus a relaxation room fitted with compression boots if you’d taken it too far on leg day. Sunrise yoga sessions are offered daily for those wishing to begin their day gently.

The Food and Drink

Despite the intimate feel of the Kimpton Atlântico Algarve, you will find an impressive four restaurants in the hotel—each with its own distinctive character. These are: Terra, a laid-back bar/cafe; Sombra, a refined seafood restaurant and my personal highlight; Marés, a beachfront Mediterranean spot; and Zénite, the gorgeous rooftop bar featuring local wines and delicious small bites.

One of Kimpton's signature features is Social Hour, hosted every evening at Zénite. This offers guests a chance to unwind and enjoy a drink at the hotel's best viewpoint, as well as socialise and connect with other guests or those in your own party.

Sombra’s seafood selection ranks among the freshest and most exquisite I have experienced. Plus, special mention for the hotel’s dark chocolate mousse—an unmissable part of every meal. For wine lovers, sparking a conversation with the hotel's highly knowledgeable sommelier is advised: there are some spectacular wine pairings to try, including those from several nearby wineries that can be easily reached by car.

The Rooms

The hotel offers 149 rooms and suites, with both pool and sea views available. I love nothing more than the opportunity to stay in a setting that is beautifully clean, minimalist, and modern—somewhat of a contrast from my cluttered bedroom back at home. Unsurprisingly, the Kimpton Atlântico Algarve provides all three in abundance.

My pool-view bedroom boasted one of the fluffiest and most spacious beds I have ever had the pleasure of sleeping in. The bathroom was particularly luxurious, with a roomy walk-in shower and huge sink area, and it made getting ready each evening a delight. Naturally, I’ve taken away plenty of inspiration for my own home.

Although each room is equipped with the regular essentials you would expect, Kimpton's Forgot It? We’ve Got It! programme offers a curated selection of items available for guests at no extra charge, in case you've left anything at home. This includes hair straighteners, adapters, and toothbrushes amongst others. A true godsend for those of us who typically pack in a rush and inevitably forget one or two travel must-haves.

How To Book

Visit the Kimpton Atlântico Algarve or IHG Hotels & Resorts websites to book.
Maybe it’s the Eat, Pray, Love effect, or perhaps it’s because Bali has enraptured me for 15 years, but as soon as my long-awaited trip to the Indonesian island was booked, an idea overcame me: Bali will change my life. That’s quite something for any holiday to live up to, let alone a press trip. I’m a realist, and so I was all too aware of the danger of setting such grand expectations as friends told me I was building myself up for disappointment. Was the trip how I’d envisioned it for all those years? Of course not.

But almost six months since I first stepped off the plane into that sweltering heat, hoping for my problems to melt along with it, I can say that Bali—and more specifically, my first-ever wellness retreat (at COMO Shambhala Estate)—truly was transformational.

“Shambhala”, as the ayurvedic doctor who greets me explains, means “place of peace” in Sanskrit. That much is already clear: the sprawling health retreat is set in 23 acres of paradisiacal jungle that unfolds in undulating tiers towards the Ayung River. Since opening in 2005, this five-star tropical bolthole has built a reputation for soul-soothing and a loyal following. As I sip my welcome elixir—a traditional blend of fresh turmeric, ginger, lemon, lime water, and honey—I overhear a Californian couple telling the linen-clad staff this is their third time returning. I wondered why someone with the finances to explore all the world’s luxury wellness havens would return to the same one. With the benefit of hindsight, it seems so clear I feel foolish for ever thinking overwise.

COMO Shambhala is immersed in natural beauty: terraced rice fields, tropical forests, and cascading waterfalls. It’s this raw and powerful beauty, as well as the estate’s seclusion and focus on ancient healing practices that helps COMO Shambhala deliver on its promise of a complete escape from the stresses of daily life.

Mischa Anouk Smith enjoying the infinity pool at the Wanakasa suite overlooking the jungle (Image credit: Mischa Anouk Smith)

Who is COMO Shambhala for?

If all the 30 private residences, villas and suites scattered across the estate were occupied while I stayed, I couldn’t tell. Occasionally, I’d see guests wrapped in pristine white robes and bamboo sliders padding up to the spa or getting shuttled around by their PA (we all had our own 24-hour on-call personal assistant—Hi, Zara!) in golf carts, but this isn’t a holiday where you’re going to have to worry about bumping into the same family every day by the pool—not least because many properties have their own.

COMO Shambhala is designed for discretion, so I’m surprised when I strike up a conversation with one of the retreat’s most esteemed massage therapists who reels off a long list of seriously A-list COMO Shambhala devotees. John Legend and Chrissy Teigen are fans, as is Julia Roberts, which thrills me. I rewatched Eat, Pray, Love on the plane and am permanently on the lookout for any signs that I’m about to enter my own enlightenment.

The guests searching for health, healing, and perhaps some spiritual development in this rainforest-hugged haven are high-net-worth. That makes for some fun White Lotus-style guessing games on the rare occasions you spot fellow patrons.

The vitality pool at COMO Shambhala in Bali (Image credit: Mischa Anouk Smith)

The setting

COMO Shambhala is cradled by the quiet Begawan Village in bustling Ubud, the spiritual centre of Bali. Ubud derives from the word ‘ubad’, which means “medicine” (again, I learned this from Dr Prasanth Vayanakathu, a specialist in ayurvedic healing and the estate’s wellness manager).

The exclusive retreat rests above a sacred valley—a site of healing and traditional water purification ceremonies (more on that later). The holy springs power the water in the hydrotherapy pool, where restorative classes take place, as well as the rainforest shower and stone-carved tub in my suite. The divine water is part of daily life at COMO Shambhala, Hindu priests bless the healing pool and all around is the sound of water, whether it’s meditative trickling near the palm-thronged yoga pavilion or the Ayung River’s roiling waves where groups of rafters thunder down winding ravines as I sun myself by the spring water pool.

Overlooking the clubhouse in the Wanakasa suite (Image credit: Mischa Anouk Smith)

The Rooms

I arrived at COMO Shambhala on October 13th, my 34th birthday. After being shuttled from reception—a sun-bleached overlook that frames a lush tropical panorama—I’m led past an infinity pool that hangs over a dense jungle canopy towards a sprawling villa I’m sure must be a mistake. So thrown by this display of luxury am I that I ask Zara if this is really where I’ll be staying. The answer is a gentle nod towards a vibrant display of flowers arranged to spell out ‘Happy Birthday’. I am ecstatic.

Inside is a typical East meets West aesthetic inspired by the four elements. To my left: a giant springy bed, to my right: sliding doors open to a low-lit bathroom. A giant stone-carved tub takes centre stage, framed by a separate shower room and a rather technical toilet with sensors to lift the lid and a heated seat. Outside, there’s a jacuzzi, dining area, and a wrap-around veranda stretching to a shared infinity pool. Organic textures like wood, stone, and gauzy linens make up the interiors, adding to the natural serenity of the space.

The room at golden hour in the Wanakasa suite (Image credit: Mischa Anouk Smith)

The programme and spa

Ahead of my wellness consultation and body composition analysis, I filled out an exhaustive questionnaire about my various concerns—health, mental and otherwise, as well as what I wanted to get out of my experience. A chronic oversharer, I detailed it all, as well as my insomnia, which I was in the throes of. Dr Pransanth suggested the Connect to Rebalance pathway, which is for “those in need of self-reflection, struggling with digital overload, improved mental health or seeking renewed purpose.” I nodded in agreement and was handed a personalised itinerary as well as a diet plan—pleasingly, both were encouraged rather than enforced. There are four wellness pathways at COMO Shambhala as well as an integrated pathway that is even more meticulously bespoke and includes additional expert diagnostics.

In addition to group activities such as yoga, pilates, hydrotherapy and qi gong in the Ojas (Sanskrit for ‘Essence of Life’) area, there is also guided estate walks and, most pleasing of all, daily treatments. Prasanth suggested a mix of massages, which was fine by me. There was a traditional Taksu massage aimed at tapping into the body’s natural energy centres, a deep tissue massage, and an Indonesian massage, which involved a combination of firm pressure, long strokes, kneading, and stretching to improve circulation, relieve muscle tension, reduce stress, and restore balance. All took place in the warmly-lit, Javan hardwood-panelled spa. One led to me nodding off on the table and all left me feeling positively elastic. I was also advised to follow the 3-2-1 method (no food three hours before bed, no liquids two hours before, and no screens one hour before) to improve my sleep hygiene.

The Ojas (Sanskrit for ‘Essence of Life’) area at COMO Shambhala (Image credit: Mischa Anouk Smith)

The food

The menus at both the jungle-fringed Kudus House and Glow are bursting with fresh, nourishing Southeast Asian flavours and organic ingredients that don't skimp on taste despite all being largely low-fat, low-sugar, and dairy- and gluten-free. I’m unsure what to attribute it to (probably the sudden surge of vitamins, enzymes, and minerals) but my IBS-induced bloat is the most manageable it’s ever been.

Mornings begin with a golden Jamu shot (a ritual I have kept up) on an empty stomach before loading up on tropical fruit and flax seed crêpes dolloped with young coconut cream. This, I was told in hushed tones, was to be a deeply spiritual and transformative experience. Rooted in Balinese tradition and held in a sacred Hindu water temple near the thundering Ayung River, the ceremony is designed to cleanse the body, mind, and spirit. We were led by a guide through the verdant jungle towards the holy site where a local priest and a trio of spiritual leaders tinkling on bamboo xylophones awaited us.

We crossed the palm-fringed threshold leaving a fellow guest behind (tradition dictates that menstruating women are prohibited from taking part in the ceremony). After donning sarongs fastened with white sashes (symbolising purity and a clean start), we began the purification process, immersing ourselves one by one in the sacred waters as a symbol of renewal and spiritual cleansing.

The ritual is meant to wash away negative energy, stress, and emotional blockages making space for a deep sense of peace and inner balance. I wistfully hoped that this physical cleansing would result in an immediate emotional and spiritual reset and I’d float away with a sudden connection to my higher self and the natural world that surrounded me.

That didn’t happen, instead, as I de-robed and re-dressed in a Kebaya with a batik sarong and sash I found myself irritatedly waiting for a sense of serenity to wash over me. Had I done it wrong, I wondered. It was hard to hear the guide over all that darn divine water.

The water purification ceremony at the wellness retreat COMO Shambhala in Bali (Image credit: Mischa Anouk Smith)

Things ended with a prayer and an offering; a practice of mindfulness and reflection. It was here that things started to click. There was no great epiphany, no ecstatic revelation, just a quiet settling. I’d expected some jolt to the system like a defibrillator that’d jumpstart my soul. I wanted a sudden surge of energy; what I got was a softening sense of ease.

Is this...inner calm, I dared to wonder. I’m not sure, to be honest, but since leaving COMO Shambhala I’ve felt better, not in some superhuman or deeply spiritual way, but there’s an ease there that didn’t exist before. I might now be somewhere in the region of 7,750 miles from Bali, but if I need to, I can tap into an inner quiet and pull some of the learnings from my time there. She's won a BSME award for her work on Sustainability and scooped a Spirit of Hearst award in 2018, too. She has an MA in Magazine Journalism from City University and a BA in English Language from the University of Birmingham.
As Health and Sustainability Editor here at Marie Claire UK, there's nothing I love more than a relaxing holiday destination that prioritises both wellness and sustainable practice.

That's why, heading to W Costa Navarino last year, I couldn't wait to review the hotel. Nestled in Messinia in the southwest Peloponnese of Greece, it's the first W Hotel to open in Greece and the second W Hotel in Europe. While Costa Navarino is currently home to four 5-star hospitality offerings, the W is a vibrant, design-focused addition to the quarter-of-a-century-old hotspot.

Set on a scenic 450-meter-long sandy beach overlooking the uninhabited island of Sfaktiria in the protected Bay of Navarino, the hotel boasts some impressive sustainability credentials - more on that later - and an extensive wellness offering, too, with a focus on fresh local food, soul-soothing spa treatments, a state-of-the-art gym and more water sports than you can imagine.

It's not all yoga and olive oil treatments, though - the hotel manages to effortlessly fuse wellness with fun, also offering a poolside DJ and beach-front bars. Parelia, their beach-side drinking and dining spot, is a marvel in and of itself, firmly cementing it as a five-star destination. Every design detail is considered, with architecture masterminded by renowned Greek architects Tombazis and Associates and art from up-and-coming Greek artists. I'd read that the 226-room hotel feels like its own little Greek coastal village and that it really does, complimented by olive trees and cobbled paths.

Keen to read more about staying at W Costa Navarino? Read on - because it's no exaggeration to say it's now firmly cemented as one of my go-to holiday destinations.

W Costa Navarino: "Swaying olive trees, rugged mountains and sweeping shores make for a seriously relaxing getaway"

Who is W Costa Navarino for?

Couples, groups of friends, and families with children over the age of twelve years old. While other resorts at Costa Navarino are kid-friendly, the W fosters a more adult, beach club vibe - and I won't lie, lying poolside without the hubbub of children in the background is incredibly relaxing.

The lack of children complements the laid-back, wellness-focused feel of the resort. By day, enjoy a chilled beach club vibe or book a session at the spa, and by evening, take your pick from a handful of different bars, restaurants and eateries with local fare at the forefront of the menu.

The setting

The modern yet authentic hotel is sure to tick many a holiday-goer's box thanks to its picturesque beachfront and rich local history (fun fact: the battle of Navarino took place in the bay in 1827).

Swaying olive trees, rugged mountains and sweeping shores remind you that you're in the heart of the Peloponnese, and their newly opened Navarino Agora - a curated marketplace and incubator of art and culture, a short five-minute walk away - offers handpicked retail, restaurants and street food venues, an open-air cinema and VR entertainment alongside a rich program of events including music and dance performances, art and book exhibitions, an antique's bazaar and more.

What makes it a must-visit, however, is its effortlessly elevated architecture and interior design. It oozes Mediterranean relaxation - think natural stone walls, angular wooden panels and traditional lighting and flooring designed as a nod to the Greek basket weavers of the past. That, paired with light, airy spaces, reclaimed furniture and soft linen upholstery, complements the sweeping blue panorama of the sea.

Pops of colour from young artists at the Athens School of Fine Arts give it a contemporary, current feel. In a thoughtful finishing touch, the iconic W totem has been handcrafted using reclaimed wood collected from old fishing boats. If you fancy checking out the other hotels at Navarino Dunes, a shuttle runs hourly to transport you to your destination.

While there are plenty of different rooms on offer - 226, to be precise - they all offer slightly different options. Choose from a double room with panorama sea views or beachfront villas with your own private pool. We were lucky to enjoy an infinity swim-up room which, despite having a shared pool, felt intimate and luxurious. The room itself was effortlessly chic, spacious, and tastefully designed, with plush bedding, Wildsmith toiletries and an Aperol spritz station set up to welcome us on arrival.

The programme and spa

W Costa Navarino offers a wealth of fitness classes, watersports and treatment options in a relaxed and informal way - there's no pressure to jam-pack your trip with activities, rather, a gentle hum of options on offer.

The gym is state-of-the-art with both an indoor and outdoor space looking out onto the bay, meaning you can complete your workout lapping up breathtaking views. Fancy a class or personal training session? There are plenty on offer, from one-to-one options to daily yoga, Pilates and cardio group workouts.

If you'd rather get your heart rate up by taking in the local nature, Navarino Outdoors offer guided tours to the nearby Kalamaris waterfall, Voidokilia beach, Palaiokastro and more. There's also paddleboarding, windsurfing, kayaking and canoeing on offer at Navarino Watersports by Moraitis, and four signature golf courses, twelve tennis courts and five paddle and pickleball courts at Navarino Dunes just a short drive away. If swimming is more your thing, there's also a dedicated lap pool.

Enjoy their warm Greek hospitality with a treatment at their AWAY spa - a soothing, dimly lit oasis with an impressively extensive menu of treatments. We enjoy one of their award-winning olive oil treatment in a "room for two," and leave feeling like a floaty, tension-free cloud.

What I enjoy most about the wellness offering at the hotel is that it's weaved seamlessly into your day-to-day - working out isn't a chore or add-on, but something you can't wait to get stuck into thanks to the facilities on offer. Refuel post-workout with the fresh fruit protein smoothies Green Pepper, their all-day vegetarian hub.

The food

I love good food - I once worked at a food magazine - so can be quite fussy. That said, you're spoilt for choice at W Costa Navarino. Choose from Platia - a take on a traditional Greek food market with delicacies from around the country, the W Lounge - a relaxed bar with great cocktails, small plates and the best view of the sunset, and Parelia - their signature beach club overlooking the Bay of Navarino. After dinner, enjoy a sundowner at the Between Bar, an Ibiza-inspired bar with live music DJs, cocktails and spritzes.

There's also a gorgeous cafe with fresh juices, homemade pastries and Freddo cappuccinos on tap.

All of their restaurants serve Mediterranean dishes designed to be shared and some excellent local wines. Our go-to for our trip was the unbelievably flavourful Greek salad packed full of local Kalamata olives, the whipped cod's roe with fresh bread, and any of their locally sourced seafood.

Don't miss

The magic of W Costa Navarino lies in the relaxed, laid-back vibe that oozes from the resort - so much so, that it's almost impossible not to feel peaceful.

I'd be lying if I said my favourite part wasn't relaxing by the pool lapping up the glorious Greek sunshine and reading my book, that said, it'd be a shame not to make the most of everything the hotel has to offer. A trip to the spa is a must, as is a waterfront cocktail at their newly opened marketplace. Another highlight of our trip was a dedicated olive oil tasting where we got to learn about the rich history of Grecian olive oil and the many different varieties, just one of the many authentic experiences guests can enjoy at Costa Navarino.

Being only a few hours from Athens, you're also in a prime position to split your time and venture into the Greek capital. We divided our trip and loved being able to explore the hilltop citadel, which is brimming with ancient history and sites including the Parthenon temple and the Acropolis.

Sustainability efforts

Staff have worked hard across all five resorts to ensure that noise, light, and infrastructure don't impact the local environment or wildlife - one small part of what makes their sustainability credentials noteworthy. Last year, the destination reduced the use of guest-related single-use plastics by 57% and plastic bottles by 59%, not to mention recycled more than 200 tonnes of waste, aiming to eliminate the use of plastic.

Partnering with WWF Greece, they've long worked hard to preserve the landscape and biodiversity of Messinia, a region with one of the highest biodiversity levels in Europe. Not only are they implementing the most extensive olive tree transplanting program in Europe - 7,000 olive trees have been replanted so far alongside more than 9,900 new indigenous trees and 1,200,000 endemic shrubs of different species - but in collaboration with the Navarino Environmental Observatory and the Department of Science and Mathematics of the American College of Greece (Deree), they're working on a project to monitor the population of the endemic and critically endangered African chameleon. They also have an extensive monitoring and protection program for the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) in cooperation with Archelon, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, having recorded 66 nests in 2023 along The Dunes Beach.

Also worth noting is the destination’s bioclimatic architecture, with approximately 90% of the total land area dedicated to indigenous and planted greenery and plenty of free-standing open and planted rooftops.

Their efforts aren't to be shrugged at - the entire ethos of the resort is centred around building a better tomorrow and making sustainability the norm not the exception for guests.

The cost

Rooms start from €340 for a "Fabulous Bay Room."
I'm approaching 30, so it might seem odd to some that, up until a few months ago, I had never stepped foot on Ibiza. For my entire adult life, I have been that friend who has sat out of Ibiza holidays. (This is something that will surprise anyone who knows me, given my shameless penchant for a disco.) The reason for this is because the very premise of Ibiza speaks to me on a deep level. I'm not talking about the party scene, either—far from it. For me, it's the bohemian principles on which the Ibiza we all know and love in 2024 was founded. I couldn't bear to visit Ibiza and spend five days partying—I simply wasn't old enough or wise enough to appreciate it for the place I knew it to be.

When I think of Ibiza, I think of a wild and beautiful island where its inhabitants live life to its fullest—drawing on nature to live in a truly free-spirited way. I had vowed that the first time I visited, I would stay in a place that allows me to embody everything the real island is about—wellness, nature and history. A place like the iconic retreat, Atzaró Agroturismo Hotel. Frequented by A-listers, the exclusive destination had been on my radar for many years—and I finally made it. It is, truly, a place where time stands still. It's the place that made all of my Ibizan dreams come true. So, naturally, I want to shout about it from the rooftops. Here's what there is to know...

Who is Atzaró Agroturismo Hotel for?

Atzaró Agroturismo Hotel is a destination for people who, like me, want to experience the real Ibiza and indulge in slow living for a little while. It is a sanctuary for those who require a mental and/or physical reset, but is equally as great for those who live and breathe all things wellness. A solo escape would, I believe, be one of the most beautiful ways to visit for those who are in need of some respite and grounding. But the stunning surroundings make it an equally as perfect destination for couples who want a private getaway.

Having said that, large suites with private pools also make Atzaró Agroturismo Hotel a fantastic option for families or small groups of friends who cherish peace, quiet and all things wellness.

The setting

Atzaró Agroturismo Hotel is nestled on the quiet north side of Ibiza, where nature grows wild and free. Its location makes it a hot spot for those who want seclusion—visited by A-listers, such as Gisele, Shakira and Rihanna.

This year sees the destination turn 20 years old, but its history goes back much further than that. The 24-bedroom agroturismo (essentially, a working farm and hotel) sits on a 180-acre estate, which has been owned by one the island's original farming families for over 100 years.

On the 25-minute drive from the airport, you see the island change in real time as you venture further north. While billboards advertising the latest club nights line the highways as you exit the airport, with a few turns you soon find yourself driving down dusty, gravelled roads surrounded by wild beauty as far as the eye can see. It becomes almost impossible to image the two worlds exist on the same small island.

As you drive up to Atzaró Agroturismo Hotel you're greeted by a traditional white finca, dripping in pink bougainvillea, surrounded by luscious green gardens, palm trees and cacti, all enveloping the tranquil river that provides a calming soundscape throughout the entire destination. Beyond that, you see sprawling farm land, growing the food served in Atzaró restaurants, and a sensationally fragrant orange grove which provides the majority of the island's oranges.

Upon setting foot into Atzaró Agroturismo Hotel, you get a real sense for what makes it so special as a destination. Firstly, the interiors are wonderfully traditional, but with a luxury bohemian edge that demonstrates just how thoughtfully orchestrated the whole experience is—think heavy, handcrafted woods, draping white linens and terracotta stone floors.

The crux of what makes the agroturismo so unique, however, is in its ability to create the perfect indoor/outdoor feeling. The buildings themselves are sprawling (but not far enough away from each other that walking feels like a chore), allowing the feeling of total seclusion wherever you are. Each element is joined together by wild gardens and cobbled paths. But, truthfully, the magic lies in its outdoor spaces. The heart of Atzaró Agroturismo Hotel is, without question, the outdoor spa pool (which I have no doubt you will have seen on Instagram at some point). The agroturismo hotel's restaurants champion outdoor dining (when weather permits, which it almost always does), allowing you to eat surrounded by the gardens. In the height of the season, you can experience outdoor film screenings, as well as unique al fresco dining and drinking experiences, as per the establishment's ever-evolving offering.

The agroturismo's hotel rooms are dotted around the estate. While larger suites sit just a couple of minutes' walk across the road, more rooms with balconies and private terraces are nestled throughout, with every room providing a feeling of seclusion and tranquility.

Inside, you'll find plush four-poster beds (that are every bit as comfortable as they look), a comfy living or working space and decadent bathrooms. All rooms feature a private terrace or balcony, with some featuring outdoor baths, pools and gardens.

The spa & programme

Atzaró group weaves wellness into everything it touches—and the agroturismo hotel is the beating the heart of Ibizan wellness. The spa is spectacular. Rid your mind of any ideas of traditional European spas—the one at Atzaró Agroturismo Hotel borrows the beauty of its natural surroundings to offer a truly unique outdoor experience.

The reception is surrounded by water covered in lilypads, and large, individual treatment rooms are a short hop across some skipping stones. Being a beauty editor, I want to give the treatment offering a special shout out. My massage (using Atzaró's custom-blended oils in its organic spa range, which are among the best I have ever smelled) was a stand-out moment of the entire trip. The therapist who did the treatment actually had to wake me up at the end. There is also a hammam, steam room, outdoor sauna pod and a decked jacuzzi nestled in among the kitchen garden.

It is critical here that I talk about the pools. While there are a total of four pools available for you to while away the day, the 43m-long spa pool is, without question, the star of the show. Filled with refreshing natural water, it was the one that I found myself lounging besides every day on a decadent day bed.

It is also worth mentioning here the array of other wellness experiences on offer. There is a daily schedule, with classes taking place in the agroturismo hotel's impressive fitness studio, as well as a fully-equipped gym. The schedule includes a variety of yoga and pilates classes.

The food

I don't consider myself too much of a foodie, but my fiancé certainly is—and we were both blown away by the quality of our meals. The agroturismo hotel features two restaurants, La Veranda and The Orange Tree (the latter of which is open July-September). While La Veranda delivers traditional Mediterranean delights and a truly sensational breakfast with both indoor and outdoor seating available, The Orange Tree is reserved for hot balmy evenings, where diners can eat outside under twinkling lanterns.

Both restaurants offer menus which have been designed around the fresh produce grown and harvested on the estate. Think fresh salads with vibrant leaves, the juiciest fruits the planet has to offer, croquettes that are worth writing home about and some of the most melt-in-the-mouth meat I've ever come across.

I also thinking the poolside bar menu is worth a special shoutout. Throughout summer, it becomes a destination in its own right—it is somewhere you could easily spend an entire afternoon. Also housed in a traditional finca, Aubergine is a sprawling network of pergolas brimming with creativity.
My job as a beauty editor means that I get to visit some rather spectacular wellness destinations. I'm 'popping into' London's most luxurious spas, hotels and salons on a weekly basis, and going on UK staycations as well as overseas wellness retreats on the regular, too. What I'm trying to get across here is that I've seen it all when it comes to wellness retreats—and yet there is one I place on a pedestal far above the rest.

Hotel Post Bezau is a wellness hotel situated in the hills of the Bregenzerwald in the Austrian Alps. Nestled amongst panoramic Alpine views, a visit to Post Bezau is nothing short of a tonic for the soul. While you might not be familiar with the hotel yet, there's high chance you have come across the woman behind it and her nature-led beauty and wellness brand (which is also one of my all-time favourites, by the way)—Susanne Kaufmann. While the hotel has been in the Kaufmann family for five generations, with Susanne at the helm what was once a traditional wood-panelled chalet hotel for locals has been transformed into what is now, in my opinion, one of the world's most impressive and welcoming wellness retreats.

Surrounded by some of the earth's finest sights, the beauty of Post Bezau is that everything is truly grounded in nature. From hiking and wild swimming to quality sleep and holistic beauty treatments, every element of your stay at Post Bezau feels supercharged by the pure mountain air. So, what is it that keeps me going back year after year? Unrivalled relaxation and restoration, without any of the gruelling bodily torture so often experienced at some of the other wellness retreats and medispas in Europe. Here's what to know...

Who is Hotel Post Bezau for?

Truthfully, I'm not sure there's anyone who won't find solace in a stay at Hotel Post. However, it's particularly good for those who want to to reap the benefits of a wellness trip without any of the intimidation. While the hotel does offer set wellness and 'detox' programmes in which you can book onto, you can also take things at your own pace by picking and choosing the activities you would like to partake in during a regular stay.

If you struggle with sleep and are just looking for a relaxing break, Post Bezau has you covered. All of the rooms are designed with sleep health in mind to ensure your body is as rested and reset as possible. The serene setting, unrivalled Badehaus (equipped with saunas, a steam room and various pools) and truly stand-out spa treatments can't be beaten for those who wish to wile the days away and master the art of doing nothing.

However, it's also an incredible destination for those who find respite in activity. The Bregenzerwald is the ultimate destination for all levels of hikers, provides excellent slopes throughout ski season, offers next-level wild swimming lakes come summer and is equally as perfect for those who get their kicks out of cycling. Plus, the hotel itself offers daily movement classes in its fitness studios, neighbours tennis courts and has a truly impressive gym.

While all ages are, of course, welcome (nature-loving children will not be bored with the mountains right on their doorstep), if you're looking for the ultimate wellness reset, I truly believe that a solo booking is one of the best travel decisions you can make.

Having said that, I have previously booked an urgent trip to Post Bezau with my fiancé in a bid to lower our collective stress levels and hit reset on our wellness—and it was, hands down, one of the best trips we have ever taken.

The Setting

If there's one thing I want you to know about Bezau it's this: I truly believe it must be one the cleanest, most nature-rich places in Europe. While winter sees its slopes turn crystal white with powdered snow, come spring the meadows are lusciously green and filled with flora. It is, after all, situated in a region that puts sustainability at the core of everything it does in order to preserve its natural beauty and wildlife. The area prides itself in nature, and is actually the location in which all Susanne Kaufmann products (and many of their natural ingredients) are produced and sourced.

Bezau is a quiet and quaint town, nestled in the middle of rolling hills. I find myself longing all year for the high I get from waking up at Post Bezau, stepping out onto the balcony and taking in a deep lungful of Bezau's exceptional mountain air.

The hotel itself comprises two parts. The original building features traditionally Austrian, chalet-like design and houses the restaurant, complete with cosy fireplaces and deep woods, as well as a handful of bedrooms and suites. Then, comes the wellness expansion. Under Susanne's helm, a newer 'wing' was added to the building which champions the minimal (but very chic), light-filled eco-architecture that Bezau is known for. This newer wing houses more bedrooms, wellness studios, a gym, the Badehaus and a Susanne Kaufmann medispa. Everything about the hotel oozes serenity and peace.

Inside your room, expect clean and very minimal design. The guest rooms have been specially crafted to ensure optimum sleep and restoration.

The programmes and spa

First things first, one of the things that makes Post Bezau so appealing to me is that booking does not require you to make any commitments to a laborious programme—something other world-famous wellness retreats in Austria and Switzerland really push. When specific retreats are running, your stay, activities, spa treatments and food are included in the set rate. Retreat programme options for 2024 include the Detox programme, the Beauty programme, the Mental Health programme, the Body Shaping retreat and Yoga retreats.

However, if you don't wish to book onto a specific programme or retreat, you still get access to the Badehaus and the free daily activity programme (which changes week by week but can include gym, guided walk, yoga, movement and breath work classes), as well as optional participation in various health and wellness workshops all included in your room rate—meaning you can take each day as it comes with no pressure.

The Badehaus at Post Bezau sets the gold standard for all of the wellness 'centres' I visit in my job. Various Susanne Kaufmann teas and juices are there to be consumed to your heart's content, and stepping into the bath house provides instant relaxation. Inside the light-drenched space is a 16m pool with floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over the Bregenzerwald, a plethora of comfy loungers, a sauna, a steam room and rest rooms. Step outside onto a terrace for the most picturesque jacuzzi setting you've ever experienced, or take another exit to experience the outdoor sun deck, complete with a warm, salt water pool that is every bit as blissful in the winter as it is the summer.

The spa is also a thing of beauty, both literally and metaphorically, thanks to Hotel Director and beauty expert Stephanie Rist, who has worked closely and in partnership with Susanne for over a decade to deliver what is, in my opinion, one of the most exceptional beauty spaces on the planet. Treatments (all of which have been tailored with Susanne Kaufmann products) take a holistic approach to beauty and wellness, with the belief that a healthy state requires treatment of not just skin, but also mind, body and soul. Fascia techniques, lymphatic drainage and deep tissue massage are championed.

More recently, the spa has transitioned into a 'medispa' (a term we in the beauty world have coined that essentially means 'medical spa'). Under the guidance of Dr Brigitte Klett and Dr Joachim Lohmann, doctors specialising in both general and Chinese medicine, Hotel Post also offers a range of TCM treatments and detox cleanses.

The food

One of the best things about Post Bezau is that the food is second to none. Various menu options are available, depending on what you would like to achieve out of your stay. If you book onto a specific retreat programme, your menu will be selected for you. However, if you have decided to opt out of a retreat, you are still given the option of choosing from the standard menu, a detox menu or a weight management menu.

The food is nothing short of exquisite—and you certainly won't go hungry. Produce is local to the region, fresh and absolutely delicious. The ingredients are kept and stored through a 'canning' method, which allows off-season produce to be stored and used on the menu year-round.

Don't miss

Truthfully, I don't want to provide a 'don't miss' for Post Bezau. The joy of this wellness escape is that you can turn up, do nothing and still feel totally rejuvenated. However, I do want to give a particular mention to a ritual in which my stays at the hotel have instilled in me—a pre-sleep foot bath. Each room at Post Bezau comes equipped with enamel bowls, a jug and a small bottle of Susanne Kaufmann Alkali Salts. Fill up your bowl with warm water and a capful of salts and indulge in a 10-minute foot bath before climbing into bed for a truly restorative sleep. It's an age-old tradition that proved so effective for me upon my first stay that I ordered my own enamel bowl and jug, as well as a big tub of Susanne Kaufmann salts, to use nightly at home.

Sustainability efforts

As already mentioned, every detail of Post Bezau is rooted in sustainability and the environment. Just by walking through the Bregenzerwald it becomes immediately apparent that its eco-diversity is key to its beauty—meaning that locals in Bezau do their utmost to maintain what they have. As a local to Bezau (she still lives in the area), Susanne's desire to uphold a sustainable lifestyle is deeply ingrained in everything she does, both personally and through her work.

The kitchen's canning method at Post Bezau doesn't just mean that local produce can be used year-round, it also eliminates any risk of excessive food waste. The hotel has abandoned the use of plastic wherever possible and has even developed its own environmentally-friendly cleaning products.

The Susanne Kaufmann production house is just down the road, creating all of the Susanne Kaufmann beauty products right in the brand's hometown, utilising locally grown and sourced ingredients.

It's also worth noting here that upon visiting Bezau, you will likely be struck by the town's impressive and distinctive architecture. The Kaufmann family comprises notable architects and carpenters who utilise the local region's traditional wood construction techniques (and who also designed the new wing to the hotel). The abundance of local wood and craftsmanship has resulted in Bezau becoming a hub for architectural brilliance that champions a zero-waste mentality and eco-friendly design.

The cost

The best thing about Post Bezau? While the prices are by no means 'cheap', what you get for your money is far greater than any other famous wellness destinations in this area of Europe. Single rooms start from €210 per night, while double rooms start from €397 per night, based on two people sharing (meaning that, actually, you get more for your money if you don't go solo).

Post Bezau, Bregenzerwald | hotelpostbezau.com

What to pack

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:100.00%';>

Adidas Terrex AX4 Hiking Shoes

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:100.00%';>

Vuori Evolve Legging

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:100.00%';>

Hunza G Square-Neck Seersucker-Weave Swimsuit

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:100.00%';>

Prada Symbole Sunglasses

With a five star spa offering a varied range of wellness experiences and yoga, it's ideal if you’re looking to utterly switch off and hide away for a week. However, active couples and families will be equally impressed by the huge range of activities on offer here from tennis and biking to watersports like diving and surfing. Just moments from the famous Chicken Break, a reef stretch capable of creating clean 10 second barrels, Kuda Villingili is one of the best located hotels in the Maldives for both beginner and seasoned surfers. The manageable consistent waves are perfect for those starting out, while seasoned surfers will enjoy the bigger swells. There is also a brilliant kids club with a variety of daily activities and sports to keep the children entertained.

The Setting

The hotel sits on a private island fringed by powder white sand and lush vegetation. We reached it by speedboat and disembarked bleary eyed from an overnight flight. Within minutes, we were greeted by our own private butler for the duration of our stay and handed a cool coconut water and escorted to our spacious villa overlooking the calm blue ocean. We were on the beach enjoying our first warm swim in the sea half an hour later. It all felt so smooth and seamless - like a home from home. The island is totally car free (you’re given a bicycle when checking in to get around) and the overriding sound is of the waves lapping at the sand and the exotic birds overhead.

The rooms

Kuda Villingili has 75 one-to-four-bedroom villas so it suits couples, families or multigenerational families. Rooms are spacious and secluded ‘beach villas’ directly facing the sea or traditional Maldivian ‘water villas’ on stilts over the ocean with private pools from where you can watch the wide array of tropical fish. Both have private pools. The design is minimalist and tasteful with lots of exposed wood. The interiors feel relaxed and elegant and are complemented by traditional Maldivian arts and fabrics. Of course you can expect all the state of the art conveniences too from surround sound speakers to Nespresso coffee machines.

The spa

Kuda Villingi’s spa is reached via a walkway to a separate private island. The spa’s eight treatment villas sit over the calm lapping water and there is something about it being removed from the rest of the resort that makes it feel extra specially calm. Ingredients for the oils and treatments here are organic, sustainable and plant-based and draw on Eastern medicine and aromatherapy. We loved the range of personalised aromatherapy massages. But you will also find deep cleansing anti-ageing facials plus hot stone therapy, Ayervedic massage and Body polishing rituals. The state of the art gym overlooking the ocean featuring the latest technogym equipment is the best incentive to get up early for a workout, while the daily yoga and pilates sessions on the beach pavilion overlook the ocean and take place at sunrise and sunset. We quickly got into the habit of doing the yoga each sunset (you can do them individually or as part of the group). All classes are run by internationally recognised practitioners who had a wonderfully inclusive approach to their sessions embracing guests of all levels and incorporating meditation and breathing techniques at the start or end of the sessions. Utter bliss when done to the sound of the waves.

The food

The Restaurant concept, which is inspired by the elements of Fire, Earth, stretches across three elegant outdoor restaurants. There is an emphasis on natural and organic products and local fish and seafood. You have the full spectrum of global cuisine here. The food at Spice is heavily influenced by Asian cuisine and Indian-Arabic dishes. While East serves Oriental-Thai cuisine and the Med restaurant offers excellent Italian-Mediterranean cuisine Spice tempts diners with Indian-Arabic fare. You can also try South American cuisine and Japanese-Peruvian dishes. Our favourite was the Indian restaurant but whatever your taste, you’re fully catered for here.

Don't miss...

There is a bit of a list here. Try the sunset cocktails hosted each night up by surfers point where a live DJ plays a chilled wind down session on the beach. Don't leave without a raw baby coconut massage at the spa, which targets your pressure points with warm coconut oil and deep tissue massage. It really eases sore muscles and tight backs and also lowers blood pressure, calms the mind and enhances hormonal function. We loved the silk body polish too. If you want to try something that plays to your thrill-seeking side then give the E-Foiling a try. With speeds of up to 30 miles per hour, you can fly above the Indian ocean on an electric surfboard that lifts up to 80 cm above the water’s surface. Kuda Villingili also hosts truly magical boat trips to go and see the local dolphins. If you do one thing aside from sunbathing, do this.

Sustainability efforts

Kuda Villingi is serious about sustainability.
In 1998 Babington House, the original home-away-from-home space for members of London's Soho House club opened its doors. Only the second Soho House property, it gave members a chance to relax in beautiful surroundings whilst soaking up the Somerset country air. Karen Williams visits Babington House for 24 hours for their 25 year celebrations wellness retreat with Cowshed.

Who is it for?

To mark 25 years, Cowshed have launched the Babington Botanical Facial using Cowshed products and botanicals sourced directly from the Walled Garden at Babington House. The great thing is anyone can book in - as long as you’re a member! If you’ve not managed to bag that super desirable membership yet though, you can still indulge in a slice of the pamper action at home. The Babington House Hamper is now available online at Cowshed and is coming to Marks and Spencer this summer and I am here for it.

The setting

The 33 bedrooms set across the Main House, Coach House, Stable Block and Walled Garden, as well as the two-bedroom cabin by the lake, are decorated in a modern take on classic Georgian interiors. All the rooms are a blue or green tone with a variety of textures with a nod to the countryside. My breathtaking room had all the charm I expected. Sprawling across three levels, the four poster bed sitting on the mezzanine floor, a free standing metal bath, an old fashioned rustic wooden toilet and fabulous floor-to-ceiling windows with a sensational view of wild flowers and sky. The room was loaded up with Soho House's new skin care range Soho Skin plus a full range of Cowshed favourites named to reflect a range of moods like Relax, Awake, Refresh and Active. All contributing to that at-home spa experience. I was delighted to see some great books and magazines set out plus my favourite Grind Coffee pods.

The Itinerary

The Babington Wellness Retreat was a name dropping event and left no stone unturned. It kicked off with the Botanical facial in the Cowshed Spa which is a new addition to the treatment menu to celebrate 25 years of Cowshed. I always like to be honest either way about stuff and I can confirm that this really was one of the best facials I’ve ever had - something to do with the soothing 5-minute mask, packed with Aloe Vera to de-puff and calm irritated skin. I finished off by indulging in complete relaxation and tension-releasing stunning scalp massage.

We then went on to complete a full day of events that left me feeling wholesome and rested. A wonderful Aromatherapy workshop making our own blend of oils with Abi Titterington-Lough, Yoga with Shona Verture, then a Cowshed inspired Afternoon Tea. Manifestation with Roxie Nafousi, Just Breathe with Michael James Wong and a Walled Garden Dinner with guest Chef Nicholas Balfe.

I also managed to fill up my outdoor metal bath tub with bubbles and reframe some of my negative thoughts I brought with me on the train from Paddington - that’s what a wellness retreat is all about right?

Food

The sun was beaming and the alfresco dinner setting with Nicholas Balfe being a glorious spectacle was an understatement. Floral, fruity and rustic was the vibe, members chatted and laughed whilst drinking fizz and snacking on platters of raw veg and dips. In the distance the smell of the bar-b-que definitely got my taste buds fired up for what was to be a spectacular plate of grub. The regular food at Babington is generally great with quite a varied menu but this was special.

Stand outs

Two things that really stand out for me about Babington is the attention to detail, and the evolution of the Cowshed Spa.

The way this place manages to blend the old with the new so seamlessly gets me every time. Everything's how you’d expect it to be back in the Georgian era, but with all your mod cons. Nothing has gone un missed; they think of it all, this for me is the key to relaxation and restoration. If you’re looking for a modern vibe though, this isn't it. From the immaculate landscaping to the English fabric companies like Bennison used on the interiors, and not forgetting all the artwork featured by 40 emerging artists, it's just all on point.

Sustainability efforts

Their working Walled Garden on site is used to source ingredients for Cowshed as well as the restaurant menu and house cocktails.

Babington was one of the first country outposts to serve a garden-to-table approach showcasing local, seasonal Somerset produce with a menu that changes daily.
Welcome to our Wellness Escapes franchise, where we're reviewing the best elevated, luxury destinations - both in the UK and further afield - that promise to leave you feeling relaxed, recharged and refreshed. Ally Head, our Health, Sustainability and Relationships Editor, headed to The Lakes By Yoo to see what all the fuss is about...

If you're anything like me, you'll love a holiday spot that offers total relaxation: havens that allow you to fully switch off, unwind, and ignore your inbox for a few days.

That's where The Lakes By Yoo comes in - a secure, luxury 850-acre estate with over 165 properties just an hour and a bit from London Paddington. With million-pound properties dotted around the estate reportedly owned by the likes of Sky News presenter Kay Burley, founder John Hitchcox himself referred to it as "essentially a posh commune."

Formerly a quarry, Hitchcox bought the estate 20 years ago with the aim of designing the ultimate countryside destination - a spot where you could work, play, and relax at ease.

And that, you can - it's been dubbed "the Hamptons of the Cotswolds" thanks to its designer lakeside cabins, full-service spa, and sailing club. It also has a bar, restaurant, and a wealth of activities spanning woodland hikes, wild swimming and arboretum.

With ten lakes, multiple meadows and scattered woodland for you to enjoy at your leisure and with design partners spanning Kate Moss, Philippe Starck, and Kelly Hoppen, you can see the appeal - especially as the site has pretty impressive sustainability credentials, too.

So, what makes The Lakes by Yoo so special and a must-visit? Keep scrolling for our honest review, plus why the location should be added to your "to visit" list, stat. Don't miss our guides to the best UK staycation spots and best UK Air B n B's, while you're here.

The Lakes by Yoo review: A high-end, lakeside staycation close to London and approved by Kate Moss

Who is The Lakes by Yoo for?

Anyone and everyone, if you can afford the price tag. While the Lakes by Yoo promises to be a haven for families, friends, and colleagues alike, the apartments start at £650 a night, with a three-night minimum stay. That said, it's a vast and beautiful site.

Exploring the ten lakes on our site tour, we're told by Estate Manager Rebecca Davies that most of the properties are second homes for Londoners and celebrities looking to escape the big city. The aim was always simple - to design spaces where you could run your business, while also enjoying the restorative power of nature.

It makes sense - if you have the money and ability to work flexibility, why cram onto a crowded tube and spend your day in an office when you could start your day with a lakeside swim and break up your meetings with a spot of paddleboarding?

They also have tailored activities to make sure it's kid-friendly - think zip wiring, fishing, tennis and more - but we only saw a few children during our stay. The vibe is more akin to Soho Farmhouse - lots of couples and groups enjoying a glass of wine while watching the sunset or relaxing in the spa together.

One of the lakeside cabins at The Lakes by Yoo (Image credit: The Lakes by Yoo)

The setting

Its location is what really sets The Lakes by Yoo apart from other cabins or lakeside apartments I've visited. What used to be disused quarries is now lakes, meadows, and densely populated woodlands as far as the eye can see, offering a peaceful and idyllic haven that's still close to London.

The journey took us just under an hour and a half: a 50-minute train from London Paddington to Swindon and a 30-minute taxi ride to the site.

Arriving, it's hard to believe you're so close to the capital and the rat race that comes with it - you can see why the homes were so quick to sell. Waking up to birdsong, a dip in the lake, and an hour in the sauna was an instantly soothing and welcome break.

There are nine apartments available to rent on-site (the others are privately owned holiday homes) which offer spacious and stylish accommodation - they're designed by Philippe Starck. They're all unique and feature open-plan living rooms, spacious outdoor entertaining decks, and wood burners for colder evenings alongside Wildsmith toiletries.

They're not the most traditional, but the state-of-the-art appliances and plush, luxury interiors do merge with the idyllic backdrop well. Plus, the attention to detail is second to none: from the locally sourced Cotswold stone, handwoven willow lighting fixtures designed by local craftsmen, and vintage mirrors, this is modern-yet-rustic interiors at its finest.

The programme and spa

The beauty of The Lakes By Yoo is that they'll deliver on pretty much any request, whether that's concierge service, an in-apartment mixologist or a private chef.

The spa currently offers Bamford treatments - although they'll be the first spa in the UK to do treatments from a newly launched brand in just a few months' time - or life coaching from Simon Schmid. They've recently renovated the gym to include state-of-the-art Techno Gym equipment and designed a spacious and airy studio dedicated to yoga and Pilates classes, too.

Cool off after your session in the 17-metre indoor swimming pool, sauna, and steam room, all with stunning views of their nearby willow orchard.

A selection of the interior touches at The Lakes by Yoo. (Image credit: The Lakes by Yoo)

The food

While the newly renamed The Lakes Bar & Kitchen offers fairly basic food - think Eggs Benedict and berry-topped pancakes for brunch, or wood-fired pizza come evening - it does offer a picturesque lakeside location to start your day or wind down.

Set in a fairy-light-covered tepee, you can enjoy fresh cakes, local Lynwood's sourdough, and expertly mixed cocktails. While the menu offering may not be extensive, it's clearly the main hub for the site, with several homeowners meeting here for a glass of wine, coffee, or business meeting during our stay.

If you'd rather head further afield, there's plenty on offer in nearby Lechdale. We walked down to The Riverside (wear your wellies - it's muddy), a traditional English pub serving everything from fish and chips to burgers.

Don't miss

Heading into the spa, do take time to admire the moving, wall-sized David Hockney piece - his 2010 Woldgate Woods - worth a cool one million.

Similarly, be sure not to miss their farm animals, including rescue pigs Frank and Kevin, brought to the estate by Sky News presenter Kay Burley.

We enjoyed using the bikes during our stay and found it the easiest and quickest way to take in everything the site had to offer.

A post shared by ALLY HEAD (@allyyhead)

A photo posted by on

Sustainability efforts

A winner of our Sustainability Awards last year, The Lakes by Yoo has sustainability at its core and it's impressive to see the team going above and beyond to ensure that the site gives back.

As Davies tells us, they reuse as much as they can, turning felled trees into bark chippings. Every part of the estate is considered - from the thriving arboretum to the hives of bees that feed on their wildflower meadow or their dedicated rewilding project, much of the estate is left to develop naturally but closely monitored to ensure that it doesn’t become a monoculture.

All of the staff live nearby and materials are sourced locally, where possible, including the tonal timber used for many of the cabins and apartments.

The site is a Cotswold Park Site of Special Scientific interest, meaning the staff have a duty to protect the rare and endangered birds and plants that live there. They also have Elm trees used by Kew Gardens to propagate future English Elm growth and a Yew tree meadow where offcuts are used by a cancer research charity to make life-saving breast cancer medication.

The cost

££££

The Lakes by Yoo isn't the most affordable of weekend staycations - rental prices start from £650 a night, with Grand Suites starting at £850 a night - that said, if you have the budget to splash out, it offers total luxury and relaxation just a stone's throw from the capital.

Rental options span a 14-bedroom pool house to three-bed lakeside cabins.

The Lakes, Lechlade, Cotswolds GL7 3DT | thelakesbyyoo.com.

What to pack

Aka, what did I take with me for my stay?
St Tropez has long been the world’s most famous fishing village and a place of contradictions. It's a charmingly quaint fishing village complete with farmers market in the square and picturesque harbour, yet also a homage to luxury where the richest in the world come to moor their yachts, drop thousands in designer boutiques and then party the nights away in exclusive nightclubs. Now it’s being lauded as a top wellness destination too, thanks to a brand new health and fitness programme led by expert practitioners at the town’s most legendary hotel - Byblos. It’s complemented by a range of new Spa treatments, and a calming alfresco terrace by the pool - Le Jardin d’Arcadia. We checked in for 48 hours..

Byblos St Tropez review: The new leading health retreat promises to help you switch off - here's how

Who is Byblos St Tropez for?

Anyone serious about switching off from the outside world for a few days and immersing themselves in a range of enlightening treatments from breathwork and human design to yoga and pilates. This is a hotel seriously committed to health and wellbeing. The Byblos’ spa was the very first Sisley spa to open in France back in 2007. The 450 square foot space features 5 treatment rooms, a new sauna, an indoor and outdoor relaxing area plus a newly redesigned hammam; as well as the introduction of a new space - “The Waterfall Room”. This was sensational and features sensory showers, including jets and waterfall features.

The hotel’s wellness and personal development consultant, Marion M’Santi, the resident yoga teacher who trained in India and has travelled the world coaching celebrity clients, was appointed to curate the unique new workshops on offer. Going further than any other wellness programmes at “Palace” hotels in France, the holistic offering features personalised workshops and treatments that fall into 3 levels- depending on how far a guest would like to immerse themselves in the experience and shut out the outside world. So whether you're someone who practises regular yoga and meditation and want to go deeper, or are dipping your toes in to trial 48 hours of wellness, great food and some luxury, there is something for everyone. Did I mention they also have an exclusive partnership with LuluLemon? It's where Mick Jagger stayed the night before his wedding to Bianca and entertained his VIP guests to the ultimate party in a Moroccan themed room, which is now part of the spa. A Lebanese businessman originally built the hotel in the 60s in an effort to attract the object of his devotion Brigitte Bardot. Sadly, she never succumbed to his advances, but the hotel itself is an exquisite homage to unrequited love.

Like a fishing village within a fishing village, the hotel is modelled on the traditional Provençal architecture with an array of little rustic red and ochre buildings around a beautifully serene pool. You can choose how deep you want to venture into your journey from stage 1 “Inner Harmony” treatments – an individual workshop, yoga and meditation session, to stage 2 “Epic Journeys” involving customised individual body workshops inspired by classical Greece followed by a beautifully balanced nutritious lunch, and stage 3 experiences.

I went for the stage 3 weekend - the “Byblos Constellations” programme which takes place over 2 days (you can still sign up to one in August). The programme was intense - in a good way - and can be balanced by relaxing massage and facial treatments in the spa. What I loved most is that sessions could be scheduled around your body clock.
