The "Open Bag" Trend Is the Perfect Example of What the Ultra-Rich Want

Recently, I invested in a crossbody phone strap. This came off the back of a spate of security-minded shopping after my luggage got lost on a recent flight, but really it was because my nervous system couldn't take the jolt every time a cyclist pedalled a little too closely.

This got me thinking: why, at a time when most women I know are clutching their phones for dear life, is another trend emerging—one that sees some of the world's most expensive bags carried wide open? I'm not talking about an unclipped clasp here or an errant zip there. I mean wide open, all your wares there for the taking.

I find this especially maddening after a friend and colleague recently had her bag snatched at King's Cross. One man barged into her from behind while another stole her bag, taking her laptop, work phone and—more depressingly—her personal phone.

I suppose you could argue that if this can happen despite taking every precaution, what difference does an open bag make? I'd argue the point isn't the risk—it's what the open bag communicates: that you're too rich, too removed and too insulated from the concerns of everyday life to care.

It's an odd proposition at a moment when many people have become almost reflexively defensive about their belongings. Personal anecdote aside, phone theft has become so prolific across the capital that the Met has launched specialist operations targeting organised gangs, with more than 117,000 phones reported stolen in 2024 alone.

Fashion's response? Leave your handbag open. At first glance, it feels like another deliciously impractical trend. But the open handbag isn't really about handbags; it's about what luxury looks like now.

For decades, wealth was communicated through accumulation. Logomania. "Bling" (yes, I shivered writing that, too). Bigger wardrobes, never outfit repeating. Then came quiet luxury, where status was murmured through deftly cut trousers, creamy cashmere and an absence of branding every bit as conspicuous as the logos that came before.

Today, even that feels a little try-hard. Fashion journalist Amy Odell recently reported that some high rollers who bought Birkins are now "embarrassed" by them. She writes: "They worry it signals a willingness to buy into the Hermès game. They fear being perceived as placing a premium on status symbols. And they feel like they're playing into the Birkin's sheer overexposure, which has made it feel less special in the social media age."

The new aspiration, it seems, isn't simply owning expensive things; it's appearing almost indifferent to them.

As fashion psychologist Shakaila Forbes-Bell tells me: "An open and slouchy bag suggests the wearer isn't worried about protecting or losing their possessions, which suggests they have enough resources to replenish anything lost. That, in itself, is a symbol of luxury."

Owning expensive things no longer communicates quite enough. Real status lies in looking as though those expensive things barely register. Or, as Forbes-Bell puts it, "Luxury is no longer perceived as solely being tangible; it's embodied."

That feels like the defining aesthetic of the past few years: Quiet Luxury, Old Money, Stealth Wealth, Soft Life, The Clean Girl—none of them are really about products; they're about projecting a life free from friction. A life where mornings unfold slowly, inboxes remain manageable, burnout is somebody else's problem and, apparently, handbags never get stolen.

Luxury has never simply been about owning more; it's about appearing untouched by ordinary concerns.

The open bag is simply the latest manifestation of that fantasy. Because if even fast-fashion giant PrettyLittleThing—a retailer once known for its day-glo bodycon clubwear—can rebrand around "heritage" and old-money aesthetics, what, exactly, are the truly rich supposed to do to separate themselves from the proletariat?

It all feels faintly... Versailles. Not because anyone carrying an open Birkin is especially Marie Antoinette-esque; the comparison is more about denial than decadence.

Hear me out, Versailles wasn't just aspirational because everyone wanted gold leaf and chandeliers. It was aspirational because everyday life appeared to evaporate behind palace walls. Labour and logistics disappeared because practicality was somebody else's responsibility. Luxury has never simply been about owning more; it's about appearing untouched by ordinary concerns.

Three centuries later, we've traded powdered wigs for "What's In My Bag?" videos, but the fantasy feels familiar. Vintage luxury reseller Evey Amery of Evey's Preloved has watched this happen in real time. "Rather than simply showing the exterior of a beautiful bag, people want to create a lifestyle around it by revealing what is inside," she says. "An open bag gives you a glimpse into someone's personality and lifestyle." Or at least, the version of their lifestyle they want you to see.

The inside of the handbag has become as carefully curated as the outside, says Amery. Where once, the status symbol was owning the bag, now it's owning the right notebook to casually leave poking out of it.

As Amery puts it: "Instead of simply saying, 'Look at the bag I've chosen to carry,' it says, 'Look at how this bag fits into my life.'"

This isn't just a street-style quirk, either; it's increasingly being designed into the bags themselves. At Fendi's spring/summer 2026 show, handbags were sent down the runway deliberately unfastened, their linings spilling out. Loewe, Chanel and Louis Vuitton have similarly embraced open, unzipped silhouettes. Of course, these bags can close securely—the open look is a styling choice rather than a design flaw. But the message is the same: the most fashionable way to carry a luxury handbag is to look as though you don't need to worry about losing what's inside.

Ironically, Amery says one of the biggest conversations she has with customers is about security. First-time luxury buyers routinely ask whether a bag zips closed, whether it's suitable for travelling and whether their belongings will feel secure. "Social media often presents handbags in an idealised setting," she says. "But my clients are thinking about real life."

Fashion has never concerned itself much with real life and its incumbent practicalities—how boring! But this trend intrigues me because it reveals what we're aspiring to against a backdrop of endless, frictionless consumption. If every metaphorical man and his dog can buy, if not a designer bag then a pretty convincing dupe, the next aspiration becomes the giddy idea of a life where you never have to think about losing your phone, getting locked out of all your accounts or checking over your shoulder.

I'd take that feeling over any It Bag. Unfortunately, I can't afford it.

Jeans and a nice top has long been the two-piece cornerstone of many a hard-working wardrobe. Its versatility is endless, after all, and it shifts seamlessly with the trends. But it may not always be the most summer-appropriate option when temperatures soar, or you're packing for a holiday. This summer's alternative? A tunic and trouser. It really is that simple. And the chicest women are using it as the foundation of their European holiday wardrobes, their off-duty looks and their office dressing alike—although the most appealing element is how easily it adapts to any personal style.

A tunic refers to a loose-fitting top, usually cut straight from top to bottom, that's longer than your usual T-shirt. Think anything from waist to ankle length. And yes, a dress of a similar fit works just as well. Essentially, the long-loved '00s concept of wearing dresses over jeans is being revived yet again in a different way, minus the denim.

Never did I think, when setting out on a career in fashion journalism, that I would end up writing about football. And yet the fashion-sport crossover has struck again—this time perfectly timed for the summer of football, with the Champions League just coming to a close and the World Cup 2026 starting today. And it spans far further than the sea of Arsenal shirts currently doing the rounds in North London.

Tommy Hilfiger has partnered with Liverpool FC. Grace Wales Bonner has released a re-edition of Adidas's Predator football boot in snake print. Stella Jean, in particular, takes the typical football kit well beyond jeans and trainers, turning it into something closer to a patriotic fashion statement—effortlessly cool and entirely moodboard-worthy. A look sure to be widely recreated once the World Cup properly gets underway.

As Soccer Bible puts it, football culture remains luxury fashion's sharpest reference point. This time last year, it was hard to scroll through social media or walk through any remotely trendy part of town without spotting a pair of lace-trim silk shorts. I Used a Vibration Plate for Two Weeks to See If It Lived Up to the Hype—It Delivered on Strength, Recovery and Results

If you've scrolled through TikTok lately, you'll have seen them: sleek, juddering platforms that promise to tone your body, build your bones and boost your circulation - all while you essentially just stand there. Vibration plates have gone from gym-floor afterthought to one of the most hyped home wellness buys of the moment, with influencers claiming they can help with everything from balance and recovery to weight loss.

The concept itself isn't actually new. Whole-body vibration training (WBV), to give it its official name, has been used in physiotherapy and elite sport for decades, and was even studied by NASA as a way for astronauts to combat muscle and bone loss. But in 2026, vibration plates seem to be having a mainstream resurgence - particularly among women in midlife.

"I've got lots of clients asking about them at the moment," personal trainer Carly Corrigall told me. "They're the weighted vest of 2026."

Part of the appeal comes from the growing conversation around bone health. As oestrogen declines through the menopause, bone density naturally drops too - and vibration plates have been hailed as one possible way to help.

The science is more convincing than you might expect, too. A 2022 meta-analysis of 30 studies found that WBV training improved bone density in post-menopausal women; although it's worth noting that results varied depending on the type and vibration intensity.

What is a vibration plate?

For the unfamiliar, a vibration plate is a platform that rapidly oscillates while you stand, sit or exercise on it. The principle behind WBV training is surprisingly simple: as the plate moves beneath you, your body is forced to make constant micro adjustments to stay stable.

"The theory behind them is that WBV training causes muscles to contract rapidly and reflexively in response, which may also stimulate bone tissue," explains Corrigall.

Crucially, the effect appears to work through your nervous system rather than by building bulk. As sports and exercise medicine physician, Dr Porter puts it: "These improvements occur without corresponding increases in muscle mass, suggesting the mechanism works through neuromuscular adaptation rather than muscle hypertrophy."

Put simply, a vibration plate trains your body to recruit muscle more effectively - even if the muscle itself doesn't get visibly bigger.

It's also worth knowing that not all vibration plates are the same. Some use side-alternating vibration (tilting like a see-saw), while others vibrate straight up and down. Research suggests the type, frequency and intensity can significantly influence how effective the plate is. A 2022 study published in Biomechanics noted factors like vibration mode, amplitude and posture all affect the neuromuscular response, which may help to explain why results vary so widely between studies, and from person to person.

What are the benefits of using a vibration plate?

From stronger bones to better balance, vibration plates are linked to an impressively long list of health claims. But what actually stands up scientifically? Here's what the evidence and the experts say.

1. They may support bone density – especially after menopause

This is the benefit driving much of the current hype, and it's also where the evidence is the strongest.

"The most compelling evidence for health-span relates to bone mineral density in postmenopausal women," says Dr Porter. "High-quality evidence supports that WBV training, using specific parameters, can improve lumbar spine bone mineral density. This is clinically relevant for osteoporosis prevention, a key component of healthy ageing."

That said, the benefits depend heavily on how the plate is used. Frequency, intensity and consistency all matter. So it's not quite as simple as standing on one occasionally and expecting dramatic results.

2. They can improve muscle strength and physical performance

The clearest benefit is to muscle strength, though not in the way you might expect. "WVB training can improve lower-limb muscle strength and physical performance measures, including sit-to-stand tests, balance, and walking speed in older adults," says Dr Porter.

In simple terms, your nervous system becomes better at recruiting muscle efficiently.

The important caveat? A vibration plate shouldn't be used as a substitute for lifting weights.

"I like to think of a vibration plate as an additional tool to strength training - something you can use alongside it, rather than as a replacement," adds Corrigall. "Regular strength training and cardiovascular exercise remain the gold standard."

3. They can help with balance and mobility

Because vibration plates challenge your body to stabilise itself, they can also be useful for improving balance and coordination. This is one reason why WBV training has been used in physiotherapy and rehabilitation settings, particularly for people who might struggle with higher-impact forms of exercise.

"Older adults or people with limited mobility or who struggle with impact-based exercise - or those returning from injury - may benefit the most as vibration plates can nicely fill that gap," says Corrigall.

4. They could benefit cardiovascular health

There's promising evidence here, too.

"WBV training produces clinically significant reductions in systolic blood pressure and modest improvements in heart rate in individuals who are overweight or obese," says Dr Porter.

Combined with better muscle strength and balance, he notes, these cardiovascular benefits may reduce fall risk and maintain independence - both key for longevity.

How to use a vibration plate effectively

The thing I was most surprised to learn was just how much you can do with a vibration plate. Simply standing on it really isn't the point. And as Corrigall says: "Don't just stand on it - you'll get much more bang for your buck by moving."

Corrigall's advice for getting the most out of a vibration plate:

Simple stretch exercises: Corrigall suggests squats, lunges, calf raises, press-ups, tricep dips or holding a plank on the plate. "They're definitely not as simple when you factor in the vibrations!"
Start with bodyweight, then build up: Once you're comfortable with the vibrations, you can add resistance. "You can use dumbbells for additional resistance, but start with bodyweight first."
Focus on form: Corrigall recommends focusing on quality movements and range of motion while trying to keep the core stable - "although this is a lot easier said than done."
Keep sessions short: You don't need to use the plate for long, says Corrigall. "Start with 10 minutes per session and build up." Around 20-30 minutes is enough for most people to feel the benefits.

My review of testing a vibration plate everyday for two weeks

Week One

This was my first time using a vibration plate, and if you're new to one too, it definitely takes a bit of getting used to. I eased myself in gently, using the first session to simply stand upright on it and familiarise myself with the different settings.

The model I tested comes with five different workout programmes - something I wasn't expecting, and it immediately made me more excited to get stuck into the experiment. I could choose from core conditioning, interval training and an intensity challenge, all 10 minutes long, along with 99 different vibration levels.

After that first session, I couldn't feel much, but to be honest, I wasn't expecting to so soon. On the second session, however, I got a bit braver with the intensity levels and increased the level up to the maximum setting to see if I would feel an immediate difference. What I didn't anticipate was how my legs would feel: they were unbelievably itchy. A quick search reassured me this was very normal for beginners, and is thought to be caused by increased blood flow and nerve stimulation.

Midway through the first week, I decided to crank things up. Using the resistance cords included with the plate, I combined upright rows with squats, and immediately, it felt more of a challenge. It turned something that felt initially fairly passive into a workout that genuinely engaged my legs and core.

The biggest surprise of week one was discovering a use I hadn't even considered: recovery. Instead of my usual post-run foam roller routine, I tried calf and inner thigh stretches, with my legs resting on the vibration plate. It felt surprisingly invigorating afterwards, almost like a deep tissue massage for tired legs, and quickly became one of my favourite ways to use it.

Week Two

With the basics under my belt, I moved on to the more advanced exercises, including abductors, planks and press-ups. These moves are definitely harder than they look on a vibration plate - especially the plank, where the vibrations forced my core to work overtime just to hold position.

Something else I hadn't accounted for was just how convenient it was to use. Unlike most workouts that require a change of clothes, motivation and a decent chunk of time, this felt incredibly easy to slot into my day.

It was also surprisingly versatile - depending on what I wanted from it, I could use it as a gentle recovery tool, add it to strength exercises for extra intensity, or simply stand on it for a quick, low-effort session while watching TV.

So, did I notice a difference?

The most immediate change for me was recovery. My leg muscles - particularly my calves and hamstrings after running - felt noticeably less tight, and I also found the vibrations helped ease some of my lower-back stiffness after hours of sitting at my desk - another unexpected but effective benefit.

After two weeks, it's too soon to say whether I've experienced any of the long-term benefits linked to whole-body vibration, like improvements in bone density and strength. But I can see where the hype comes from. While I won't replace my regular workouts with a vibration plate, I can absolutely see myself using it as part of my weekly routine - particularly for recovery.

Can vibration plates support weight loss?

If you've seen vibration plates marketed as a fat loss tool, it's worth approaching these claims with caution.

"Whole-body vibration training alone does not significantly reduce body weight, BMI, or metabolic markers like cholesterol, triglycerides, or glucose," says sports and exercise medicine physician Dr Porter.

Some studies suggest it may slightly raise resting metabolic rate or improve flexibility, but the evidence is limited - and it doesn't reliably change body composition when used on its own.

The verdict? A vibration plate might support an active lifestyle, but it won't drive meaningful weight loss by itself.

Take the reignited love for Stone Island, which ranks as the 17th hottest brand of the year so far—with equally well-loved Y2K labels Versace, Burberry and Ralph Lauren all sitting in the top 20. Or consider the hottest product list, which features two track tops: an Adidas 'Chinese-style' track top and the Saint Laurent stand-collar jacket, this quarter's most popular product. As fashion and beauty psychologist and author Shakaila Forbes-Bell told me in regards to the 2016 social media trend that took off at the beginning of the year: “There are so many studies that preach psychologically we always look back on the past with coloured glasses, and we always find the past to be maybe better than our present.” The same logic applies here.

This season designers have us feeling nostalgic about denim. Familiar silhouettes, like low-cut flares, make a return with a modern and more wearable approach, while classic blues give way to pastel shades and prints (something we haven't see for some time).

After speaking to some of the industry's leading denim experts, I've rounded up the top five denim trends to have on your radar for the months ahead. Whether you're looking to invest or are simply on the lookout for some new season inspiration using pieces you might already have in your wardrobe.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a devoted baggy-jean obsessive. But there are moments when something a little more polished is called for, and this spring I’m pleased to welcome cargo trousers as fashion’s latest wardrobe obsession.

Fashion moves fast these days, and while cargo trousers were first seen on the runways, with most designers opting for utilitarian details such as oversized pockets and khaki colourways, a more refined iteration has caught my eye—and that of stylish women across the globe. It's no secret that one of the most enthralling parts of the Oscars is observing the countless celebrities filing in one after another, draped in haute couture. Watching the red carpet best dressed in real time is often a guessing game of which one of the major fashion houses has meticulously dressed each and every star, but easily the more entertaining pastime is seeing sartorial trends cement themselves for the season ahead. And at the 98th annual Academy Awards, one silhouette in particular has taken centre stage—peplum.

Not only is the A-line shape coming for our best spring jackets, but the A-listers have proven that it works for black tie occasions just as well. Complemented by the very best Oscars beauty looks, a nipped-in waist and conspicuous jutting waist skirt was the cut of choice for Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, and Misty Copeland, amongst others. Anna Wintour herself even gave a subtle nod to the trend in a longline cut when presenting the award for Best Costume Design.

It's safe to say that the majority of red carpet gowns aren't particularly easy to translate into our everyday capsule wardrobes, which is why silhouette or print trends always pique my interest. Peplum is a takeover I didn't see coming following the garish colour ways and mesh panels that accompanied the cut back in the 2010s, but if there's one set of people who will always prove my fashion judgements wrong, it's the red carpet attendees.

Whilst Kate Hudson opted for a column skirt cut by Armani Privé to accentuate the protruding waistline, Nicole Kidman's fluttery Chanel was embellished around the bodice and paired with a neutral pink-toned skirt.

From LA to Runway: Inside UGG’s Unexpected Rise to High-Fashion Status

I’ve been a devoted UGG wearer ever since my teens, when the Southern California–born sheepskin boots first burst onto the international scene and established themselves as a Noughties style staple. For most, they were a trend that happily faded away alongside the era's velour tracksuits, denim minis, and skinny jeans—at best relegated to guilty-pleasure status, strictly worn at home or post-gym. But not for me. Against my better judgement, I never quite gave them up, and have resolutely continued to wear them, out and proud, reactions be damned, ever since.

Some time ago, however, I began to notice a shift. Where once my choice of footwear might draw raised eyebrows, confusion, amusement, or even sneers, the post-pandemic prioritisation of comfort made UGGs—along with trainers, ballet flats, et al—acceptable again, and not just in off-duty contexts either. But, it turns out, that was only the beginning. In the years since, UGG has undergone a full-blown transformation, elevating the humble shoe from simply permissible to genuinely cool—and it’s all thanks to a handful of seriously clever collaborations.

Much of that transformation can be traced back to where—and with whom—UGG has chosen to align itself. In the past few years alone, the brand has released campaigns fronted by stars such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Cher, Central Cee, Elsa Hosk, Post Malone, NFL player Stefon Diggs, Seth Rogen and Rina Sawayama, positioning itself firmly at the intersection of modern culture and embedding itself in all the varied aesthetics that come with it.

“Celebrity endorsement has played a huge role,” explains stylist Corina Gaffey. “Seeing people like Bella Hadid wearing UGGs in a non-kitsch way has given them so much style currency. It’s made them feel current again, rather than nostalgic.”

This shift has also encouraged more experimental styling. “It’s all about contrast,” continues Gaffey. “Mixing textures, restraint, and wearing them in unexpected ways. It should look intentional rather than ironic—not that ‘I got caught outside in my UGGs’ vibe.” Her preferred approach? Slouchy denim, tailored coats, leather jackets and tonal palettes—proof that the boots now operate comfortably within a more sophisticated wardrobe language.

The brand's renewed focus on releasing experimental, trend-led designs has certainly helped too, with clogs, mules, ballerinas and hybrid styles helping to broaden the brand's appeal and audience. Associations with a single, sun-soaked image of Malibu starlets in leggings and chestnut booties are, thankfully, no more.

Most significant of all, however, has been UGG’s slow, studied entry into the highest echelons of the fashion world. First, it dipped its toe into luxury by partnering with Jimmy Choo on an exclusive line in 2009, before going the edgier route with a Jeremy Scott collab in 2017—the results of which still fetch hundreds at resale, with the signature flame-painted boots worn by Timothée Chalamet just the other day. It's a strategy the brand has only continued to refine and ramp up in the years since, with collaboration collections with Telfar, Molly Goddard, Sacai, Palace and The Elder Statesman also reaching rapid sell-out status.

And while not official partnerships, it’s also telling that high-end labels like Miu Miu, Gucci, Fendi and Dior have released their own logo-topped takes on the classic UGG boot over the years—serving only to further bolster the original silhouette’s new-found fashion credibility.

Given the runways are by far fashion's most powerful validation system, it makes sense that UGG would use this ultra-exclusive milieu to help reshape its reputation, too. In recent seasons, UGGs have featured in buzzy Fashion Week shows including Y/Project, Collina Strada, Feng Chen Wang, KNWLS, Chopova Lowena, Tolu Coker and Talia Byre in various creative iterations.

And most recently, UGG teamed up with up-and-coming Danish designer Anne Sofie Madsen to launch its newest silhouettes as part of her AW26 Copenhagen Fashion Week show—namely the Otzo clog, Quill ballet trainer, GoldenGlow embossed sandal and Minimel sneaker, albeit reworked to become "part of the same structural and tactile language as the collection," as the designer put it. The fact that most of the exclusive UGG designs featured on the runways never actually go into production is almost by-the-by. “The value of these collaborations lies in cultural capital,” explains Gaffey. “Even when they don’t go into production, they reshape how you think about the brand. They create demand, visibility, relevance and credibility—especially when they work with cooler, more indie designers.”

"Sales don’t just measure visibility," she continues. "With UGG constantly collaborating, it keeps it from being just that nostalgic boot from the 2000s, guarantees coverage in editorials and on catwalks, and creates conversation, which in turn creates demand. It’s constantly reinventing, offering fresh alternatives, which is so important in fashion."

And for me? It feels like the ultimate vindication for being so stubborn after all.

“What is Haute Couture and what makes it different from normal fashion week?” my girlfriend asked yesterday, somewhere along a three-hour drive through the countryside, soundtracked by my running commentary on this week’s shows. My answer—that it’s the moment when ultra-luxury fashion houses get to showcase their design prowess, atelier expertise and boundless imagination, crafting one-of-a-kind pieces far removed from everyday wear and instead destined for red carpets and galas of the ultra-wealthy—didn’t exactly satisfy.

While Schiaparelli, Valentino, Robert Wun, Rahul Mishra and Gaurav Gupta all delivered collections that dutifully aligned with my definition, a quizzical eyebrow was raised when we flicked through images from Chanel and Dior. The meaning of Haute Couture, it seems, is beginning to shift.

Where Schiaparelli constructed a towering sculptural scorpion tail, peacock-like tutus and exaggerated feathered collars inspired by the emotions evoked by art in the Sistine Chapel, Chanel’s offering felt more like a made-to-order extension of its ready-to-wear line—classic Chanel suit included. Together, they highlight how what these historic houses both give to, and take from, the idea of Haute Couture is becoming far more personalised.

As Daniel Roseberry of Schiaparelli notes in his show notes, “Couture doesn’t exist without structure, without the rigor and rules of its own traditions. But within that, it’s up to the designer to find freedom, to push the rules of the medium to its absolute limits.” This season, we’ve seen those limits stretched through Valentino’s exaggerated ruff-collar gowns, Gaurav Gupta’s entwined silhouettes and Robert Wun’s pearl-necklace stand dress, to name just a few highlights.

Continuing that thread, Roseberry adds, “So many people ask me what the point is of couture. It’s certainly not to create clothing for daily life. But for me, couture allows me to connect with the hopeful adolescent I once was, the one who decided to not go into medicine or finance or law, but to chase that singular fantasy that fashion can still provide.”

“Let the rest of the year be about reality, in fashion or elsewhere. But nothing is more powerful—or timeless—or for me, more now, than getting to unchain my imagination…and, I hope, yours. Couture is an invitation. Stop thinking, it tells you. It’s time to feel. You only have to look up,” he adds.

And yet, the somewhat opposite evolving approach taken by Chanel and Dior feels undeniably strategic. As McKinsey’s The State of Luxury report notes, “luxury industry is facing a significant slowdown that has hit even top brands hard, not dissimilar to what the broader fashion industry is experiencing.” In response, many labels are re-evaluating their positioning, placing customer wants and needs at the heart of every decision.

“Haute Couture is the very soul of Chanel–it is the foundation and the full expression of the House," says creative director Matthieu Blazy. "These are clothes that are as much about the wearer as the designer. It’s the clothes worn that give them a true story; their own story and an emotional resonance, giving women a canvas to tell their own story.”

Think sheer skirt-and-jacket sets, transparent trousers and vest tops, and tweed adorned with delicate plumage—all exquisitely made, yet notably more refined and restrained in their design than typical Haute Couture. A reflection, perhaps, of the modern Chanel woman wants herself.

Although this more sellable take on haute couture isn’t entirely new. Cast your mind back to 2023, when Valentino sent a pair of “jeans” and a crisp white shirt down its couture runway—leaning into a more commercial silhouette while still honouring the savoir-faire of the craft. Those jeans, it’s worth noting, were painstakingly constructed from intricate beading. Though at the time, many hailed the house for “re-inventing” the very meaning of haute couture.

When I spoke to Marie Claire’s Fashion Director, Lily Russo-Bah, she said, “There has been much discussion this week around Matthieu Blazy’s first couture collection for Chanel, with many expressing the opinion that he has somehow moved away from traditional couture extravagance. However, he was simply doing what Coco Chanel did best: creating clothes that women could wear every day. Transparent skirt suits in delicate pink mousseline, a sheer reinterpretation of the iconic 2.55 bag, and evening dresses featuring intricate feather-effect devoré that echoed the collection’s bird theme — it was all there. Exactly as it has always been, only better.”

Even as a seasoned editor, pulling out a single standout trend from all the hundreds of Fashion Week shows that take place each season can be a tricky task. Not so in the case of Spring/Summer 2026, however—for both on the runways themselves and the streets outside, there was one item that unequivocally reigned supreme: the statement skirt.

I first noticed inklings of the trend all the way back in September when a fresh new round of shows had just kicked off in New York. Ever ahead of the curve, the city’s industry insiders seemed to anticipate that the statement skirt was due a revival, stepping out in all manner of styles ranging from the fringed, feathered and sculptural, to the brightly coloured and boldly patterned.

As the season continued, so too did the skirt-centric street style sightings, whether worn in ‘high-low’ style contrasted with a simple t-shirt or knit, or as part of a bold look head-to-toe. And, importantly, the shows followed suit.

I genuinely found myself wondering whether some kind of secret skirt memo had been circulated among designers ahead of time, as I watched brands as varied as Prada, Alaïa, Proenza Schouler, Khaite, Dries Van Noten and McQueen reveal collections featuring the garment front and centre, and in endless guises. Then, as the most hotly anticipated designer debuts of the season rolled around, the trend was only solidified further.

At Bottega Veneta, Louise Trotter sent models out in a series of striking skirts composed of colourful fibreglass fringes; at Balenciaga, Pierpaolo Piccioli made the skirt red carpet-worthy by way of dramatic silhouettes and exquisite embroidery, while Jonathan Anderson went big on minis for Dior, with all manner of coloured denim, pleated, puffball, tiered, ruffled and crinoline-like forms. And the coup de grace, of course, came at Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel, where well over half the looks featured a fabulous skirt of some sort—and most memorably of all, the epic, sweeping, multicolour, feather-covered maxi that so triumphantly closed the show.

The fact that luxury fashion’s newest cohort of creative directors all chose to pin a significant part of their fortunes on the statement skirt is telling in itself. And, on a wider scale, it has done much to reignite the irrefutably feminine item’s appeal for the modern woman, especially after a decade dominated by trousers, denim, sportswear and tailoring—and generally, a more minimalist, low-key casual style.

“Over the past few seasons, we have seen a clear shift towards separates, driven by a desire for versatility and longevity in the wardrobe. Statement skirts respond perfectly to this mindset,” explains Clemmie Harris, head of buying at Harrods. “They offer customers the opportunity to express individuality while remaining highly adaptable—a single skirt can be styled in multiple ways to suit different moments and moods.”

She continues: “Whether it is dressing down an oversized or embellished skirt with simple knitwear, or elevating a colourful pencil skirt with a more structured top, skirts feel like a modern and flexible way to dress. This adaptability, combined with a renewed appetite for strong silhouettes and decorative detail, positions statement skirts as a key wardrobe anchor for 2026. They strike the right balance between creativity and practicality, which is increasingly important to today’s luxury customer.”

Lyst’s curation manager Barbara Janeczek has already noticed “strong early signals” of the trend taking hold. “Vibrant printed styles from Pucci and bold pleated maxis from Max Mara Weekend are currently among the top-trending skirts on Lyst,” she says. “Transparency in particular is emerging as a trend with barely-there mesh and innovative sheer fabrics from brands like The Frankie Shop and Prada gaining momentum at the end of last year, while lace detailing has also seen a major resurgence."

At Harrods, too, sales of statement skirts are already on the rise—and only look to increase further as the year goes on. “Brands such as Alaïa, Dior, Miu Miu and Prada continue to lead with distinctive silhouettes, refined construction and strong seasonal narratives,” says Harris.

“Alongside these, we have seen excellent momentum from Róhe, Ulla Johnson and AWAKE Mode, where skirts feel particularly relevant—combining wearability with a clear point of view. Voluminous shapes, rich textures and subtle embellishment have been especially popular, reinforcing the idea that the skirt is no longer a supporting piece, but the focal point of a modern luxury look.”

Slip-of-a-thing skirts appear to have booked an overdue sabbatical this spring. Taking their place—and more importantly taking up space—are skirts that subscribe to a different mantra: bigger is bigger. Thom Brown’s resembled cumulonimbus, with an exaggerated puffball silhouette that appeared like a modern-day take on panniers. Other designers to put their spin on skirts wide enough to require a sideways move through single doorways included Alaïa, Calvin Klein and Simone Rocha, whose translucent, ditsy-print skirts featured visible tiers of little then large hoops.

Bras haven’t been a purely functional garment for some time, often providing their wearers with a sense of comfort, yes, but also a certain frisson. For SS26, however, the difference is a shift from underpinnings to something more public-facing. At Hermès, a criss-cross bustier was paired with knee-length culottes and sleek riding boots, all in leather, an outfit that felt both action hero-esque and historical. Jil Sander’s interpretation was an optical illusion (almost), a crew-necked mini dress with a circle sliced away to reveal a bra made out of the same material, an understated grey twill. Tiffany Hsu, Mytheresa’s chief buying and group fashion venture officer, goes so far as saying it’s a “key trend”, picking out Miu Miu, who featured, “satin bras layered under dresses, adding a luxurious and modern touch to the look.” Its subversive appeal is obvious, “turning traditionally intimate garments into statement-making elements of the outfit.”

Soft-focus pastels for spring aren’t exactly groundbreaking, which is perhaps why so many designers opted for saturated colours instead. From primary shades that packed a punch (Celine mixed all three on a scarf-print blouse to sublime effect) to a renewed appreciation for jewel hues (emerald’s stock rocketed after Balenciaga), this is the season to go bright or go home. Jil Sander, by the way, contained the perfect middle ground for those more comfortable in neutrals—a pomodoro crew-neck jumper that came popped over a cobalt polo neck but, crucially, pared back with a black pencil skirt on the bottom half. (Lanvin took a similar approach, pairing a peacock blouse, which, incidentally coordinated with the catwalk space’s walls and floors, with slimline black trousers.)

There’s a different path, however, if your comfort zone is colours that don’t shout but whisper, with grey emerging as the neutral for SS26. The Attico’s grey was anything but drab, with a whip-smart skirt suit the colour of concrete positioning itself as the ultimate way to get promoted if part of your manifestation process is to “dress for the job you want”. At Dior, meanwhile, Jonathan Anderson’s grey jersey frock, with its sporty neckline, intricate draping and moulded hips making it a standout of his debut, was a haute take on everyone’s favourite sweatpants. It’s an easy shade to wear head-to-toe, particularly a darker variation like charcoal, or you can use it to subtly temper full-throttle shades like tomato, cobalt or mustard.

What’s the first thing you reach for on days when, frankly, your default mode is CBA? Jeans. Luckily, that very garment comprises half of spring’s hottest couple: jackets and jeans. It’s a duo that was spotted at Balenciaga, Celine, Dior and Givenchy, where a leather blazer was styled with polished turn-up jeans. You can see why the combination works so well, with the lived-in comfort of denim, effortless and forever the opposite of try-hard, giving a sense of cool to bombers, capes and blousons.

We’ve had to confront the return of low-rise jeans, the ‘00s throwback no one saw coming. This season, however, it’s their cousin who’s making a comeback—low-slung skirts. There’s less to be afraid of here, trust us, with the addition of a belt that lends a crucial note of polish in this context. At BOSS, a low-slung pencil skirt threaded with a slim leather belt looked ripe for work or play, depending on the styling. (It was paired with a shirt and barely-fastened cardigan, FYI, so you could easily lose the former component if heading on a date after office hours are over.)

Black and white doesn’t have to mean boring. In fact, monochrome looks made their presence felt in multiple collections for SS26, proving that your wardrobe doesn’t have to be Technicolour. At Celine, a white blazer was paired with second-skin black trousers, a graphic juxtaposition that didn’t look staged but subtle. Over at Tod’s, a strapless leather dress was sandwiched by white, with a frayed border at the hemline, in particular, lending a sense of ease. Most designers gave equal weight to black and white, balancing their looks with blocks of both (Saint Laurent’s black leather skirt suit was balanced with a white pussy-bow shirt, for example). But you could also tip your outfit’s scales towards one with just a flash of the other (Khaite’s high-waisted black tuxedo pants were contrasted with a slender white bandeau).

Marie Claire’s Fashion Director, Lily Russo-Bah, said: “As someone who rarely wears black, there was something quite soft and feminine about the way black and white were put together on the catwalk for Spring. The stark colour palette was contrasted by fluid silhouettes, even when leather was used, as seen at both Tod’s and Gabriela Hearst. It takes a lot for me to turn my back on colour, but this season I may be converted.”

We’ve always got time for a floral in spring, but this season it’s less about a bouquet than what you might place in a bud vase. Marques’ Almedia emblazoned a chiffon maxi dress with a single purple iris, blowing up its petals so they bloomed over the model’s torso. Quieter than a wallpaper-like print, but no less striking, it was also a trend seen at Patrick McDowell, where a single black flower was silhouetted against a pressed white shirt, the designer’s take on a perennial buttonhole, and Simone Rocha, where a stem ran from the breastbone to past the mid-calf on a creamy satin frock. A bunch of flowers is always nice but, this season at least, why say it with many when you can say it with one?

Flippy tennis skirts, striped rugby jerseys, water-repellent windbreakers; there was a sporty mood to many of this season’s garments, which married practicality with personal style. At Loewe, for example, gym kit layers consisted of two shirts, a bodysuit and two anoraks, one beige and one blue. While it wasn’t a look you’d necessarily sport on a treadmill anytime soon—although it has been rather cold recently so, if you’re an outdoor runner, have at it—it made a case, very convincingly, for clothes that look, but also feel, easy and wearable. The consensus on how to make your sportswear “fashion-forward”? Add a pair of heels to up the ante, quite literally, of an otherwise laidback ensemble.

Bottega Veneta’s signature leather technique, Intrecciato, meant that, even though it’s spring, the fabrication was very much front of mind. Louise Trotter’s powerhouse first collection featured plenty of the stuff, but one particularly special design was a butter yellow coat that was an outfit all by itself. She wasn’t the only designer to look at leather through a summery lens. At Chloé, a scoop-neck tank was styled with a gathered leather skirt that was gathered around the hips. Rabanne, meanwhile, cut a babydoll slip dress from oxblood calfskin, giving its neckline a studded trim that lent edge to its butter-wouldn’t-melt silhouette.

Clothes that made you want to reach out and give them a ruffle, stroke or even (gentle) poke were a highlight of SS26. One Alaïa coat immediately springs to mind, a refined take on a shag rug, with individual waves of fringe making their way into a shawl collar plus a mullet-shaped hem. For Pierpaolo Piccioli at Valentino, one maxi skirt was made of spiky fronds, rather like the petals of a dahlia, a high-drama treatment that contrasted to perfection with its understated top half: an oversized T-shirt. Texture in most cases was a head-to-toe affair (Calvin Klein, for example, sent a silky-smooth fringed top down the catwalk with a skirt, both in glossy copper brown). Roksanda, meanwhile, topped simple black trousers with a fringed mini dress made of multicoloured filament layers, the kicker being ribbon steamers that flowed out from underneath.

When Miu Miu makes a trend out of crossover aprons, you know the “trad wife” aesthetic just got the stamp of cool it’s badly needed. Ditsy-printed and white-boardered, these knee-length pinnies were paired with a collared shirt, a neck scarf, a crocheted jumper and, the finishing touch, a neat top-handle bag; a combination that’s a little bit “off” in a way that’s very Miuccia. Elsewhere, there were plenty of other twists on the ladylike. Tory Burch’s cardigan and pencil skirt combination was the cool-woman take on a twinset-and-pearls. Chemena Kamali, meanwhile, ripped up the flou rulebook with her latest collection for Chloé, with floral wallpaper dresses that fell elegantly off the shoulders but racily bounced at the thigh. And why not? It’s 2026, after all.

The trench coat is the ultimate double negative, it’s simply never not trending, especially in spring. For SS26, however, it’s reinvented itself (subtly, of course). Calvin Klein’s new-fangled trench is low-waisted, button-free and perfectly oversized. Celine’s, on the other hand, has a scarf-print lining, a funnel-neck and a nearly ankle-length silhouette. When it comes to finding “The One”, however, it might pay to stick to what you know, investing in a twist on a classic that will only get better with age.

“I’ve been hunting for the perfect trench for years,” says Amy Powney, founder and creative director of AKYN. “It needs to feel contemporary and so the colour and shape is very important.” Later this summer, she’ll be launching exactly that—the perfect trench. “It's made from 100% organic cotton with a low chemical waterproof finish.” Her excitement is palpable. “It’s very difficult, in the world of technical outerwear, to find organic and natural materials,’ she explains, adding, “It has a traditional, classic shape but is finished with organic-shaped horn-inspired buttons which add a sense of warmth that juxtaposes the more masculine shell.”

The Micro Trends You Don't Want To Miss

A micro trend might not have the cut-through of a fully-fledged “moment”, but it’s a surefire way to dress slightly more off the well-beaten path. Speaking of “off”, skew-whiff hemlines vied for attention, turning heads at Michael Kors, Loewe and Tod’s, making a case for the asymmetric or otherwise misaligned.

If you’re a trousers person, meanwhile, take heed of next season’s trending silhouette: the balloon. Billowing yet beautifully refined, this shape flares out from the hip but is snatched at the ankle, providing a barrel-adjacent shape that will benefit from a block heel.

Another garment that prioritises a sense of practicality is the boilersuit, which got its flowers on the catwalks of Bottega Veneta, Emporio Armani and Miu Miu. The high-fashion styling takeaway is to layer up, popping a fine-gauge polo neck underneath or an apron (yes really, see above!) on top.

Less practical but no less appealing is chartreuse, the colour trend no one saw coming on account of it being a green that’s usually overlooked for bottle, grass, moss or even lime. It’s finally coming into its own, however, with endorsements on the catwalks of Erdem, Saint Laurent and Valentino.

Some brands, meanwhile, ran with the preppy trend, serving collegiate-style looks that brought two words to mind (“Ivy” and “League”). Chanel’s three-pieces (sauced up somewhat with the skirt’s micro hemline) were A-grade.

When it comes to drama, in for a penny, in for a pound, which is why the next micro trend is the Harlequin, a character that was nodded to in subtle and not-so-subtle ways on the catwalks. Louis Vuitton’s cropped and ruffled-collar jacket, with black-and-white tiers as it graduated down the body, was particularly winning.

Finally, the white dress, which became a blank canvas, once again, for experimentation this season. From the Grecian (Tove) to the romantic (Simone Rocha), it’s a garment that will never get old.

If the Spring/Summer 2026 runways were any indication—which, of course, they are—2026 is shaping up to be a year of dressing with intention. With newly appointed creative directors keen to make their mark through debut collections, and heritage houses stepping, however tentatively, beyond their comfort zones—just look to Chloé’s move away from its signature bohemia—the catwalks felt charged with a newfound focus. This translates into clearly defined trends for us, the consumers.

And just as full outfits, accessories and colour pairings fall within the trend cycle, so too do dresses—one of the most beloved and relied-upon elements of any wardrobe.

Across the collections, several recurring themes emerged. Bold block colours cut through the sea of neutrals, voluminous silhouettes reintroduced a sense of play, and a handful of familiar favourites made their return: sheer fabrics, retro-tinged florals and lace-trimmed silk slip dresses—not unlike the ones we all lived in last summer.

"Ditching any idea that ‘less is more’, it fell to the likes of Dior, Junya Watanabe, Khaite, Keburia, Balenciaga, Erdem, Mithridate, Julie Kegels and Jean Paul Gaultier to really dial up the volume for SS26," continues Nicholson. "With explosively exaggerated skirts dominating many of the season’s hottest dress silhouettes, it was a particularly dramatic scene on the runway as designers were united in their undeniable lack of appetite for proportion control." Why Is Everyone So Obsessed With 2016 Right Now?

Before we begin, I’m going to make one request: play Drake’s One Dance in the background as you read this. It’s the only soundtrack that can truly set the scene for the time warp we’re about to embark on, rewinding all the way back to 2016. Don’t worry, I’m not about to subject you to a slideshow of my own decade-old memories. Having just turned 18 at the time, I have very few photos that exist outside of sticky-floored nightclubs. But I am going to explore why, collectively, we seem so drawn to the past.

“There are so many studies that preach psychologically we always look back on the past with coloured glasses, and we always find the past to be maybe better than our present,” shares fashion and beauty psychologist and author Shakaila Forbes-Bell.

So why, exactly, is 2016 the destination for our metaphorical DeLorean? “We've had five years of upheaval. Coming out of the pandemic I think a lot of people were predicting the roaring 20s, myself included, and it just wasn't like that. I think people feel cheated out of that so they're harkening back to a time where we did feel free, people were dressing up and going out,” Forbes-Bell explains.

And go out we did. We wore lace-up tops and Bardot necklines—searches for off-the-shoulder styles on fashion platform Lyst reportedly hit 3,000 an hour in July—alongside a generous dose of metallic. Just look to Kylie Jenner, a key tastemaker of the era, to jog your memory.

But, as Forbes-Bell notes, it isn’t just the feeling of 2016 we’re trying to recreate—it’s our wardrobes, too. “I think it's maybe even a sign of how people are getting a bit fed up with the very minimalist, quiet luxury, clean girl tropes, which has now been used as a symbol of like success,” she explains. “Maybe they secretly crave the freeness and the the boldness of the 2016 aesthetic”.

That boldness came in the form of skinny jeans—which were reportedly outselling other silhouettes two-to-one globally—even as straight-leg styles began climbing the search charts, becoming the most sought-after shape in the UK that year, according to Lyst. They were paired, naturally, with logo-heavy hoodies from Vetements, Gucci and Calvin Klein, and classic black-and-white Vans, which racked up more than 18,000 searches a day on the platform. Proof, if ever you needed it, that your style may not have been quite as “indie” as you thought—yes, even you in the black choker, whose sales were up 120% that year.

Still, as Forbes-Bell points out, this doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll all be rushing to buy silky bomber jackets and slogan tees. “It almost feels incompatible with the times that we're in right now.”

“There is this push for us to be more bold with the heels and the dressing up, but looking broadly it's the case of not having somewhere to go,” she explains. “People can't afford it, nightclubs are shutting down, and people aren't really going on dates as much, so it's just like a whole culmination of things. As much as people would would to [lean into that fashion era], there has to be more of a shift globally for that to be a lifestyle that we can actually dress up for.”

For now, then, it seems our love affair with 2016 will remain largely confined to Instagram highlight reels—unless, of course, someone fancies throwing a house party.

As a result, 2026 is the year we, the consumers, finally get to reap the rewards. Think of it less as shopping and more as investing in a moment of fashion history—one that’s likely to hold its value, and perhaps even grow, in the decades to come.

A first-edition Chanel Blazy bag, Pierpaolo Piccioli–era Balenciaga sunglasses, or really anything straight off Louise Trotter’s Bottega Veneta runway are just a handful of pieces fashion fans will be scrambling to secure. But if locking down a specific designer item already feels competitive, this Spring/Summer season is set to raise the stakes even further. While Jonathan Anderson may be turning to tarot readers to glimpse his future, I can almost guarantee his debut Dior designs are destined for success—and they’re already available to shop now. To mark the occasion, the house has taken over the Corner Shop at Selfridges until 27 February, with the bow bags and book totes emerging as the most talked-about pieces.

Both Rihanna and Jennifer Lawrence have already been spotted carrying the latter, catapulting the Dracula design into pole position as the season’s most sought-after accessory.

I’ve spoken at length about Demna’s Gucci in recent months, hailing it as one of the most compelling debut collections of the season, and I’m far from alone in that assessment. Whether it’s the vintage-inflected mood, the return of iconic motifs, or the undeniable Demi Moore effect is up for debate. What isn’t, however, is the speed at which it’s set to sell out. In fact, it already is.

Demna’s reworking of the iconic Jackie bag, alongside the revived monogram print and romantic floral designs, are the pieces to have firmly on your radar—and they’re already available to shop now.

The Saint Laurent Mombasa is the Latest Noughties It-Bag Making a Comeback

Much to the chagrin of some industry insiders, fashion’s ongoing love affair with the Noughties (and all the questionable trends that came with it) shows no signs of fading. Ballerinas are officially back, UGGs are ubiquitous, low-slung jeans are on the rise, and the hottest bags of the moment are largely plucked from the archives—although the latter is one trend everyone is happy to get behind.

The past year alone has seen the triumphant return of iconic, nostalgia-inducing styles such as the Chloé Paddington, Celine Phantom, Balenciaga City and Mulberry Roxanne—and now, the Saint Laurent Mombasa is joining their ranks, too.

First introduced in 2002 under Tom Ford, the slouchy, sculptural leather bag is synonymous with insouciant early-Aughts glamour, and was regularly spotted on the arms of Kate Moss, Mary-Kate Olsen, Sienna Miller, and Angelina Jolie back in the day. So, really, it was only a matter of time before it was due a second stint in the spotlight—one that has finally arrived courtesy of Anthony Vaccarello’s Spring 2026 campaign, which places Bella Hadid and the bag firmly front and centre.

"The Mombasa reissue didn’t surprise me at all, it felt inevitable," says Gabriel Rylka, founder of luxury vintage platform Break.Archive. "Long before Saint Laurent announced it, we’d already seen organic demand building for original YSL Mombasa bags from the Tom Ford era. For years they were relatively affordable on the resale market, then almost overnight prices jumped as early-2000s silhouettes came back into focus."

Cleverly capitalising on the ever-growing obsession with all things Y2K—not to mention society's unquenchable thirst for nostalgia—Vaccarello kicked off 2026 by reissuing the Mombasa for a whole new audience. The Saint Laurent Mombasa 2.0 is "faithful to the original while subtly reinterpreted", according to the brand's press release, now coming in three sizes and "conceived for everyday ease". The iconic real-horn handle, for example, is gone, replaced instead with a more modern, leather-wrapped iteration; the signature slouch remains but is ever-so-slightly more structured, and fabrications are more polished than boho.

Naturally, Saint Laurent ambassadors and longtime fans have been quick to embrace the Mombasa in their wardrobes once again. In just two weeks since its official re-release, the refreshed style has already been spotted on the likes of BLACKPINK's Rosé, Song Jia, Anja Rubik, Hannah Strafford-Taylor, Kiko Mizuhara and an off-duty Bella Hadid—signalling that the Mombasa is well on its way to becoming a major must-have of 2026.

And while celebrity endorsement has helped cement the reissue’s It-bag status, its impact has been felt just as strongly—if not more so—in the vintage and resale market. "Since the reissue, demand for the originals has only increased," explains Rylka. "When a brand re-releases an archival design at a much higher retail price, it often validates the vintage version rather than replacing it. Collectors and younger consumers still gravitate towards the originals—they feel more authentic to the moment they came from, less polished, and more culturally loaded. In many cases, the original will always be the more desirable piece."

The result is a rare scenario in which past and present coexist, each reinforcing the other’s cultural and commercial relevance. A reminder that the best fashion icons don’t simply return—they accrue meaning, and value, over time.

Chunky trainers are officially over—in terms of everyday styles, at least (as ever, at the gym, anything goes). "Low-profile vintage runners will continue to be popular in 2026," says Brendan Dunne, senior director of customer community and engagement at StockX. "These slimmer, nostalgic silhouettes offer a clean, minimalist look that fits seamlessly into day-to-day wardrobes."

He points to New Balance's slimline 204L trainer as a prime example, which is now the brand's number-one best-selling new model on StockX. "With other recent slim silhouette hits like the Nike x Jacquemus Moon Shoe and an upcoming collab from Onitsuka Tiger x Versace, the trend shows no signs of slowing down next year," continues Dunne. "In line with Nike’s normal strategy, the Moon Shoe retro will see a wider, non-collab distribution come 2026, too."

"Over the next year, we’re predicting women’s trainers to continue moving toward styles that blend fashion, comfort and versatility in new ways," says StockX's Brendan Dunne. "One of the biggest trends will be the continued rise of 'sneakerinas'—trainers with ballet-inspired silhouettes, Mary-Jane straps, or slip-on constructions. These hybrid designs offer the ease of a sneaker with a softer, more feminine shape, making them easy to pair with anything."

Tiffany Hsu, chief buying and group fashion venture officer at Mytheresa, also pointed to the so-called 'sneakerina' as the hottest trainer trend to know for 2026. "This more refined, fashion-forward take on the classic sneaker blends casual comfort with elevated, chic details, making trainers versatile enough to pair with both relaxed and tailored looks," she explains. "This trend is gaining momentum because consumers are increasingly looking for sneakers that combine comfort with style, suitable for both casual and more polished outfits. Brands like Jimmy Choo, Chloé, and Dries Van Noten are leading this movement, introducing soft pastel shades, elegant materials, and unique design touches that feel fresh and modern."

Meanwhile, Selfridges assistant buyer Adam Biton predicts the arrival of "even more experimental sneakers and fusion styles in 2026"—and global fashion shopping platform Lyst has already noticed a 31% increase in demand for hybrid trainers year-on-year.

When thinking of winter dressing, it’s all chunky knits, heavy wool coats and buttery leathers. Items, and fabrics, that wrap us up cosily against the increasing chill. But this season, there’s a lighter material quietly stealing the spotlight: lace. The same delicate textile that dominated our summer wardrobes in the form of sheer skirts, cami tops and slip dresses is refusing to pack away with the warm weather. Instead, it’s shapeshifted into darker tones, easy to layer items, and evening-ready pieces that prove the ornate fabric isn't solely for summer.

Just take a look at the Autumn/Winter 25 catwalks, where lace stood strong in its classic boho territory at Zimmermann and Chloé, with sweeping ankle-length dresses and silk-trimmed wraps. The Most Unexpected Runway Inspiration? Checkered Polypropylene Bags, and They Come With a Hidden Meaning

Checks, plaid and gingham are familiar fixtures on the catwalk—just look to the Spring/Summer 2026 collections from Brandon Maxwell, Burberry, Bernadette and Chanel for proof. Yet while inspiration for these patterns comes in many forms, from kilts to picnic blankets, one item in particular is currently front of mind for many fashion fans: the checkered polypropylene bag.

You know the ones—big, plastic, and instantly recognisable with it's checked pattern. You might have seen them at your local market or piled high at your nan’s house, if yours is anything like mine. Otherwise, you may know them as a “Ghana Must Go”—a name that will bring up countless results on Amazon, though is now being questioned for its continued appropriateness.

Right now, the bag’s distinctive check pattern and its frequent appearance in fashion are drawing renewed attention. This is largely thanks to the resurfacing of Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 07 reinterpretation, which is currently reselling for around £1,600—a far cry from the £2 non-branded versions found in markets and corner shops. Add to that the flurry of similar checks and colourways on the Spring/Summer 26 runways, and it’s clear this humble pattern has become a talking point once again.

The reason this particular print holds such an emotional tie? It’s steeped in complex history. "For some, it is painful reminder of the 1983 mass expulsion of Ghanaians from Nigeria following the oil crash," explains celebrity stylist, editor and fashion expert Marian Kwei, noting how these bags were often used to hastily pack up belongings during that time.

"Being of Ghanaian heritage I know that for many there are mixed feelings with regard this affordable carryall bag, for those who find it painful it is a reminder of the confusion, displacement and enforced expulsion from Nigeria and the alienation felt," she continues.

"For others, it has come to connote an inexpensive, resilient, easy to attain carryall that encapsulates the movement of people and the carrying of goods and items," she adds, noting that the bag is known by various names across Africa and the rest of the world.

Today, however, the pattern has been reclaimed by African designers and creatives. Visual artist Òbìnna Òbíòmà created an entire shoot, Anyi N’aga (We Are Going), using the bags to craft a full outfit and set. "Through fashion, we are both expressing ourselves and hiding something at the same time both metaphorically and physically. The 'Ghana Must Go' print captures that duality perfectly: it holds the memory of displacement while also celebrating movement, identity, and renewal," he shares. Adding, "Over time, it has transformed from a marker of hardship into an emblem of cultural reclamation and pride".

Wanda Lephoto built their Home Affairs Spring/Summer 22 collection and Our People collections around the theme of cultural inclusion and belonging, using the bags as a central motif. And artist Abdur Rahman Muhammad immortalised them in oil in his The Allegory of a Seeker exhibition.

Aisha Ayensu, founder of Christie Brown, also referenced the pattern throughout the Autumn/Winter 25 collection. “For me, the checkered polypropylene bag print has always been more than just a pattern. It holds memory, history, and the lived experiences of migration and resilience, especially tied to the ‘Ghana Must Go’ story," she says. "When we referenced it in Christie Brown’s Fall 25 collection, it wasn’t about aesthetics alone. It was about reclaiming something once seen as ordinary or even stigmatised, and reframing it as a marker of strength, adaptability, and identity".

"The print has indeed gone from being a symbol of displacement and resilience to the mainstream," notes Kwei. Meanwhile, Idelle Taye, founder and CEO of Guzangs, a magazine spotlighting African style, reflects that “it’s one of those prints that tells a full story without words. What was once seen as ordinary or even disposable now sits in a luxury context—and that shift says a lot about who gets to define value in fashion.”

Òbíòmà adds, "What’s powerful about seeing this pattern on international runways today is how it speaks to the cyclical nature of cultural exchange where something once stigmatised is now reimagined as high fashion. African designers have been instrumental in reframing the narrative, using the print as a statement of ownership and reinterpretation. It represents how we reclaim our stories, our aesthetics, and the power to define what beauty and value mean on our own terms".

However, Ayensu stresses, "to see it now on global runways is powerful, but I do believe fashion has a responsibility here: not to erase its roots, but to honour the culture and stories it represents".

Where the print truly found resonance in mainstream luxury, however, was through Virgil Abloh’s (of Ghanaian descent) Off-White x Free The Youth (a Ghanaian youth collective) collaboration—where the print was used across bags and T-shirts. Its meaning and cultural significance fully appreciated.

It’s this sense of historical and emotional recognition that fashion fans now want to see from luxury labels—whether through collaborations with African designers and artists, acknowledgment of the print’s roots, or active support for emerging talent continuing to tell its story. "Now that is the beauty of design when it’s done with intention—it becomes a bridge between the past, present, and future," adds Ayensu. Designers who are planning on using it best take note.

Goodbye Boho, Hello ’80s Florals and Flounce—Chloé’s Spring/Summer 2026 Show Was Full of Surprises

The word boho rarely comes without Chloé close behind it. Chemena Kamali’s vision for the luxury label has placed lace, sheer fabrics and wide-leg denim firmly at the forefront in recent seasons. But just when we thought the brand’s whimsical aesthetic was well and truly established, Chloé has surprised us with a new direction—and it’s bursting with nostalgia.

Enter: the 1980s. Complete with vibrant florals in every iteration—pink rose-printed mini dresses, purple smock tops and blue floral micro shorts aplenty—the opening looks could have been plucked straight from your grandmother’s photo album. Only a perm could have added more retro charm, and the styling shift has, unsurprisingly, caught the attention of every fashion devotee in Paris.

And yet, these floral frocks, tops and jackets weren't solely about the print. "I wanted to explore what the idea of couture could mean in the Chloé context," shares Kamali in the show notes. "So, I came back to something very personal for me—the instinctive gesture of draping to form, volume and movement," she adds, lending each piece a striking shape without the typical rigid structural elements of boning or lining.

"For me this became about merging the grandeur of couture inspired techniques with the most ordinary of cotton poplins. Stripping back all but the essential simple, “poor” fabrics and giving them shape through draping," Kamali continued. And the prints? A redrawing of florals from the archives of the 1950s and 1960s.

Post-florals came the business-casual looks: structured blazers, straight-leg trousers and statement leather belts that leaned away from classic corpcore. Proof, if ever we needed it, that Kamali is a subtle shapeshifter when it comes to evolving the brand’s signature style, which was the whole aim of this Spring/Summer 26 game. "I wanted to push the boundaries of what defines Chloé, expanding its language, taking it into new and unexplored territory and looking at why and how Gaby Aghion founded Chloé," writes Kamali in the show notes.

Although, of course, the boho spirit made its return by the show’s close—this time in the form of flouncy coats, tiered skirts and cropped puff-sleeve blouses, all finished with lashings of lace, crochet and ruffles. It’s official: we’ve now got a Chloé that can do it all.

There's nothing quite like the buzz surrounding a Prada show. Not only is it one of the most important brands on the Milan Fashion Week schedule, but it's one of the most powerful, successful and influential luxury labels in the world, too. On a more practical level, however, Prada is the brand that stylish women turn to for some semblance of an everyday uniform—so each new collection acts as a pretty accurate predictor for how insiders will be dressing in the near future.

If the Spring/Summer 2026 collection is anything to go by, then, it seems that next year we'll all be wearing statement midi skirts, utility shirts, lashings of grey, and some wonderfully unexpected colour combinations. A classic Miuccia mix of easily elegant utilitarian glamour—that still feels fresh.

Held in a vast, orange-floored warehouse on the outskirts of Milan, the Prada SS26 show drew a typically starry front row, including longtime, high-profile devotees such as Emma Chamberlain, Carey Mulligan, Kerry Washington, Maya Hawke and Sadie Sink. They—along with the great and the good of the global fashion community—watched on in visible delight as models emerged in Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons' latest must-have designs.

Explaining the inspiration behind the collection, entitled 'Body of Composition', Mrs Prada said: "Inevitably, when we create we think about the world around us. The future is unknown. This collection is about reacting to the uncertain—clothes that can shift, change, adapt. In the combination of the different elements, in this idea of composition, there is a choice and freedom, authority and agency for the woman wearing them. It is fashion that is connected inherently to the world, with a meaning and usefulness. How to face the world, and how to survive."

Hence: pieces that are equal parts practical and innately chic, light and unrestrictive in their form, made to be moved around in and endlessly combined—often in unexpected ways. Silky evening minis were layered over contrasting bubble-style skirts; utilitarian jumpsuits were elevated with luxurious materials, and paired with silk opera gloves; leather jackets turned ladylike in pale pinks and greens; masculine overshirts topped bright satin bloomers, and grey workwear blazers were worn with soft matching bras.

The skirts were undoubtedly the stars of the show, however, and statement-making in all their forms. Some were made from puffed-up taffeta, while others came in bright jewel tones, high-waisted and tied up with a ribbon, and there were some simple(ish) black designs too. But the standouts were made up of a stylish mish-mash of materials, textures and tones: a high-fashion, luxurious Prada-coded take on Chopova, if you will.

As for the accessories, they were excellent as ever. Standouts included black structured leather bags—the new cult work bag, no doubt—, costume-style coloured crystal earrings, 'work in the front, party in the back' heels with diamanté tassels, and silk pouches reminiscent of dust bags that will (hopefully) make for a more entry-level investment.

Did London Fashion Week Really Just Create a Rococo Revival?

Looking to the past to predict the future has long been a foundational element in any fashion designer’s collection. Take the Y2K trend, for example: bandage dresses, heeled flip flops and choker necklaces resurrected from more than twenty years gone by. Yet, for Spring/Summer 26, the designers at London Fashion Week reached much, much further back into the archives—back to a time before cars, radios, and even the modern day fish tank was invented—yes, that last one surprised me, too.

From there, they plucked on one key feature: the exaggeration of the hips through bustles, panniers and crinolines—the cage-like frames that sat beneath large skirts—producing pieces that are as beautiful as they are steeped in history. Take Patrick McDowell’s big-hipped blazers, Simone Rocha’s voluminous frocks, Natasha Zinko’s gothic gowns, or even Erdem's vintage-like evening attire. But why the return of the attention-grabbing petticoat?

"I think we are seeing crinolines everywhere in Spring/Summer 26 collections from Reem Acra at New York Fashion Week to Simone Rocha at London Fashion Week (we actually saw them take centre stage at Couture fashion week earlier this year, too) because we have moved into a gilded era where excess is sought and being celebrated by the elite," shares celebrity stylist and fashion expert Marian Kwei as one possible answer.

Another? The fact that the Rococo era is trending. Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi's new Wuthering Heights movie trailer has just dropped to plenty of applause—yes, it's Victorian, but the fashion follows similar rules. And Marie Antoinette's style exhibition has just opened at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, swiftly following the presumed French Queen's pink diamond ring selling at £10 million at action in June this year. Clearly, it's the season of a Rococo and Victorian renaissance.

"Marie Antoinette was possibly the first true style influencer and reference to her excess with regards her style is back inspiring fashion," adds Kwei. Although this isn’t the first time we’ve gone down this road: in 2006 Sofia Coppola released her Marie Antoinette film; in 2007 Girls Aloud’s I Can’t Speak French video drew on Rococo revival; and Dior’s Haute Couture 2007 collection featured petticoats and lavish pink palettes.

So clearly the twenty-year trend cycle is still standing firm, even if the original inspiration occurred much (much) longer before. And, as Kwei confirms, it also lines up with the more-is-more outset we’re currently seeing across fashion circles—bag charms, dopamine dressing, and Labubu’s included. Although how Marie Antoinette would feel about the latter, I’ll leave to your own imagination.

While many think that the beauty agenda for each season is set on social media, that couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s the make-up artists, hairstylists and session manicurists on the catwalks of Paris, London, Milan and New York who determine our blush placement for the upcoming months and the standout trends for the quarter.

AW25 was a masterclass in picking your battles, selecting one thing—whether it be perfectly crimped hair or larger-than-life lashes—and executing it perfectly. It was a breath of fresh air amidst the sheer volume of product churn we’re seeing in the industry, and served as a reminder that the past can be ripe fodder for inspiration, from tonal make-up to the resurgence of soft 60s glam.

90s grunge smoky eyes

Even though festival season may be over for the foreseeable future, one theme we saw again and again was '90s grunge-inspired smoky eyes. At Dreaming Eli, models went indie-sleaze with a sultry, burnt-out black eye, which had a glistening, clear balm applied on top. “It's not an Instagram-perfect look, it's like you've had it on for six hours... It’s like Alexa Chung in the 90s post-Glastonbury, with a Shirley Manson chunky lash,” M.A.C's Senior Artist Carly Utting said backstage.

Bluemarine and Marni followed a similar script, with the former opting for a matte, grey-ish eyeshadow encircling the eye, with a touch of electric blue liner. Marni leant grungier with heavy lashings of kohl along both waterlines—this was effortlessly blended into various shades of brick, charcoal and terracotta. Then, over at Roberto Cavalli, their smoky eye had a cool, blue hue, which was smoked upwards, but with clearly defined lines.

Over at SS Daley, the hair may have looked loose and relaxed, though it was anything but. Anna Cofone, Global Creative Advocate for Authentic Beauty Concept (and Lana Del Rey's hairstylist), gave us “back to school” vibes, but with a “party edge”. Backstage, she told Marie Claire UK that she combined aspects of traditionally masculine and feminine styles to create controlled looks. While there were elegant coifs and tousled waves, which looked as if the models had been on a night out, not one hair was out of place.

Likewise, at Acne Studios, hair lead Anthony Turner used Schwarzkopf to create striking looks that captured “the essence of modern duality”. There was contrast between the masculine and feminine elements, with the top being a structured, “handsome boyish” look, while the back was soft, long and natural. Tom Ford also played with androgyny, with stylist Guido Palau creating coifs so sleek they looked futuristic.

Autumn isn’t typically associated with warm, terracotta colours, but SS Daley brought dusty tones of ochre to models’ eyes and lips, in a way that really works for back to school season. Make-up artists used fluffy brushes to seamlessly blend the colours from the inner corners to the brow bones to form a halo-like effect, reminiscent of sunsets. This was then matched across the lips to create a cohesive appearance.

At Sandy Liang, make-up artist (and brand founder) Fara Homidi used a blue wash of colour over the lid, which contrasted with the models' bare lashes to create a "doll-like" effect. This tonality was heightened with the addition of a latex-y, opaque beige lip. It was a similar story at Chloé and Michael Kors, where models seemingly wore barely any make-up, just variations of their own skin colour all over the face.

Gone are the days of “ghost lashes” or thin wisps; at Harris Reed, the lashes dominated the entire face. Models sported inches-long, sculptural eyelashes, painted black, metallic gold and cobalt blue. Continuing their collaboration with Charlotte Tilbury, the brand’s Global Artistry Director, Sofia Tilbury, dialled up the drama on the lashes by coating them with lashes of the Exagger-Eyes Volume Mascara, before keeping the base neutral and dewy. The lashes at Vaquera were similar and spidery on both the top and bottom.

Then, at Courrèges, they were even more dramatic; flapping like fans over the models' faces. Many had a twist and featured bald spots in the middle.

While this summer was all about ease, the upcoming season is leaning more towards traditional wintery tropes, especially Annie’s Ibiza, which channelled romantic, Renaissance tropes, some of which even skewed medieval. Sam McKnight used XXL extensions to achieve gently waved and crimped lengths, which were completed with braided updos, long, dropped plaits and chunky, glossy braids. He said it was easy to achieve a version of this at home, too: simply leave your hair braided for a couple of days before setting them loose.

M.A.C’s Dom Skinner adopted this approach for the make-up too, describing his models as “love-lorn warrior women”, inspired by Joan of Arc. “These women are powerful, they are strong, they are in control, they are warriors,” he said, applying lashings of blood-red lipstick and gilding the eyelids in gold pigment.

A romantic strain of 'just kissed lips' was also seen over at Carolina Herrera, where it looked like artists had pressed berry tones onto the models' lips and topped them with a wet-effect gloss.

While we’ve long associated crimping with the 90s and early Noughties, the hairstylists over at Chet Lo—also presided over by Cofone—created a refined version of the look. The panels of crimped hair reflected the patterns within Lo’s sartorial canon. It was a thoroughly modern take on what is considered a “nostalgic” style.

At McQueen, the hair was decidedly looser and more flyaway, with key sections crimped gently, in what was a more wearable take on the look.

At Richard Quinn, the swinging 60s and its ‘IT’ girls reigned supreme. Backstage M.A.C’s Global Creative Director of Artistry, Terry Barber, referenced the likes of Julie Christie, Jean Shrimpton and Diana Ross. As such, he swiped a thin slick of duck egg blue shadow across models’ lids, as well as a “putty beige” lip and reflective highlights on the cheekbones. Barber told Marie Claire UK that he’s bringing highlighter back for the upcoming season—saying that a reflective, not shimmery, tone across the eyes, nose, and high points helps pull a face together beautifully.

At TOGA, the reference to the swinging Sixties was a bit more modern; with soft grey being smoked all over the eye, with a little added definition in the socket. This smoky, 60s grey was also seen at Cavalli, but once again modernised by a lack of any mascara.

If the hair was “glass”, then the skin most definitely had a “satin-y” sheen. Across the board, there was a move towards translucent-looking skin, which wasn’t matte, but not quite shiny either. Literal aestheticians from Kate Somerville prepped the skin at Chet Lo, using the brand’s HydraKate Water Cream and Recharging Serum, and in a sign that our collective skincare obsession is only growing, they finished with a five-minute oxygen therapy boost facial. Likewise, EVE LOM’s master facialist Jon Rummins prepared the skin at Emilia Wickstead to achieve “modern, luminous, fresh skin”, which wasn’t reliant on “covering”.

If there was one standout hair note, it was super shine. For Harris Reed’s Gilded collection, which redefined fashion as armour, lead hairstylist Ali Pirzadeh drew inspiration from the sharp lines and cage-esque shapes to create sculptural looks. I watched backstage as Pirzadeh crafted intricately modelled buns, which were quite literally screwed into place—or assembled into highly-glossed, sky-high ponytails.

Similarly, at Tom Ford, the hair was controlled, with oodles of gloss. Acne Studios took it up a notch, though, with models walking down the runway with hair that was so glossed, it looked crispy, especially around the crown. If that's not for you, over at Ralph Lauren, it was all about healthy-looking hair. It was glossed, but in a more everyday and naturalistic way, as if the models had been sleeping in oils and masques for weeks in preparation.

Blurred Lines: How the World of Fashion and Art Collided Once Again this Season

Although often viewed as distinctly different worlds, fashion and art have always been intrinsically linked. Both serve as powerful forms of expression that have motivated some of the most iconic cultural moments of the past century.

Often cited as fashion’s first major crossover with the art world, the partnership between designer Elsa Schiaparelli and artist Salvador Dalí in 1930s Paris led to nearly a decade of surreal collaborations — from perfume bottles to fabric prints and the now-iconic lobster dress worn by Wallis Simpson. Their work set a precedent, paving the way for future creative pairings: Yves Saint Laurent and Piet Mondrian, Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami, Alexander McQueen and Damien Hirst, to name just a few.

“Art has never just been a trend in fashion – it’s the very foundation of it,” says Koibird founder Belma Gaudio. “Designers like Miuccia Prada, Issey Miyake and Roksanda don’t look to art for seasonal inspiration; they live in that space where fashion and art constantly inform each other. It’s a dialogue that’s always existed — not a moment, but a movement.”

“What we’re witnessing is a new creative legacy in motion,” says creative director and stylist Barbara Ayozie Fu Safira. “Designers are using fashion to stretch the boundaries of reality, pulling from sculpture, performance, and storytelling to build entire universes.”

The Autumn/Winter 2025 collections showcased exactly that. Luxury houses across New York, London, Milan, and Paris looked to the art world to illustrate their collections — from Erdem’s partnership with artist Kaye Donachie, whose paintings were printed directly onto fabric, to Loewe’s homage to Josef and Anni Albers, and Marni’s joyful collaborations with Olaolu Slawn and Soldier Boyfriend.

“The relationship between fashion and art is deeply rooted and symbiotic — each discipline consistently informs and challenges the other,” reflects Tiffany Hsu, Chief Buying Officer at Mytheresa. “As designers seek to create more meaningful, narrative-driven collections, turning to the art world for depth, context, and emotional resonance feels both natural and inevitable.”

Indeed, this season’s collections followed design codes that invited new forms of connection — allowing audiences to interact, reflect, and feel empowered. Fashion didn’t just reference art this season — it fully embraced it, with both worlds coming together to create bold, expressive collections.

“This concept isn’t about referencing art; it’s about living it,” adds Ayozie Fu Safira. “Fashion and art were never truly separate spheres. Now, more than ever, they speak as one, evolving language.”

Roksanda and Phyllida Barlow

For over 20 years, Roksanda Ilinčić has led the way in blending craft, design, and artistic expression through her eponymous label, Roksanda. For the brand’s Autumn/Winter 2025 show at London Fashion Week, Ilinčić drew inspiration from the late artist Phyllida Barlow.

Known for her bold, playful, and large-scale installations, Barlow has long influenced Ilinčić — from her use of recycled materials to the conceptual thinking behind each piece. With a focus on space, form, and challenging traditional sculptural methods, Barlow’s work invites viewers to question what they see.

These ideas translated beautifully on the runway. Traces of Barlow’s architectural sensibility combined with Ilinčić’s signature tailoring resulted in a 35-piece collection that honoured both the artist’s legacy and the designer’s vision.

Erdem Moralıoğlu, creative director of his eponymous label, has long bridged the gap between art and fashion. Known for referencing influential artists like Tracey Emin and Nan Goldin, his collections often explore themes rooted in the female form.

For Autumn/Winter 2025, Moralıoğlu collaborated directly with artist Kaye Donachie — a partnership that began when he commissioned her to paint a portrait of his late mother. Moved by Donachie’s poetic approach to image-making, he was drawn to the way her work captures the lingering presence of a life once lived.

The result: Donachie’s ethereal female figures now appear across the collection — their silhouettes printed on ready-to-wear pieces crafted from natural fibres, interwoven with signature Erdem motifs like velvet embroidery and romantic florals.

The Courrèges’ Autumn/Winter 2025 show was a masterclass in bold minimalism. Staying true to the brand’s sleek design codes, creative director Nicolas Di Felice drew inspiration from Moments Like This — a book featuring artist Dan Colen’s confetti-inspired works and graffiti splatters.

Unusual, witty, and humorous are just some of the words often used to describe artist Erwin Wurm’s work. Known for exploring the body and unconventional forms of craftsmanship, his influence on Issey Miyake’s creative director, Satoshi Kondo, feels particularly fitting.

Wurm’s sculptural practice often involves everyday materials — from screws and chairs to suitcases — reimagined in surprising ways. His aim: to challenge perception and offer a new point of view. It’s a philosophy Kondo shares, using fashion to transform the familiar into something entirely unexpected.

Indeed, through his work at Issey Miyake, creative director Satoshi Kondo has consistently challenged traditional notions of garment design by drawing on sculptural references. For the label’s Autumn/Winter 2025 collection, Kondo found major inspiration in Erwin Wurm’s work, particularly in a presentation at Paris Fashion Week that explored the idea of the "One Minute Sculpture.”

Here, attendees watched performers hold spontaneous, sculptural poses — a living installation that brought Wurm’s playful philosophy to life through fashion.

This season, Alaïa’s creative director Pieter Mulier explored themes of sculpture, geography, and what has always been central to the brand: women.

Drawing inspiration from the work of sculptor Mark Manders, Mulier was intrigued by the artist’s reflections on culture, transformation, and impermanence. Manders is known for combining everyday objects — like tables, chairs, and newspapers — with wet clay to create works that appear unfinished or fragmented. With crumbling faces and missing parts, his sculptures examine beauty and geography without defined boundaries.

Just yesterday, as I was researching an article about tailoring and sifting through the latest batch of street style snaps, I had a sudden and genuinely ground-breaking realisation—that grey has officially surpassed black as the fashion world's shade of choice.

There have always been those who favoured a bolder palette, of course, not to mention the recent wave of dopamine dressers who prefer their fashion on the more outrageously fun and fabulous side. But through all of the many, many trends, micro-aesthetics and major fashion developments we've seen over the years, the unofficial industry insider's uniform resolutely remained head-to-toe black. Until now.

These days, outside the big five Fashion Weeks, instead of one big blur of black clothing, it's more like fifty shades of grey. Oversize grey tailoring, in particular, seems to be having a major moment, whether paired with a simple white t-shirt for an effortless off-duty look, layered with a sheer, sparkly dress for an unexpected (read: Instagram-worthy) effect, or worn as a failsafe foundation to showcase colour-pop accessories.

More structured, slimline grey suiting has also been springing up all over the place, putting a sultry spin on the ever-prevalent corpcore trend—the silvery shade serving to make the look even cooler (quite literally).

Meanwhile, grey knit layers are being used to subtly break up monochrome clothing combinations; silky lace-trim slips paired with classic grey sweatshirts for a high-low vibe, and greige checked kilts and mini-skirts styled with navy, white and black cropped tops for a fresh take on preppy school girl style.

But why is everyone suddenly going grey? Well, firstly the Autumn/Winter 2025 catwalks collections were rife with the shade, especially at heavy-hitters like The Row, Miu Miu, Khaite, Calvin Klein, Prada, and Givenchy—where greys ran the gamut from soft ash and sparkling steel to dramatic charcoal, with a few liquid metallics thrown in for good measure too.

Then, there's the fact that grey trend can offer a softer, more subtle and low-key look when compared with its black counterparts. With the increased casualisation of clothing—not to mention work and social environments, as well as fashion trends in general—the overwhelming desire is to look put-together but effortlessly so. With its cool undertones and sporty associations, grey achieves this perfectly, while black tends towards the more formal and polished. It's worth mentioning that the latter can also be rather stark and harsh against some skin tones, while grey is more universally flattering.

As a lifelong head-to-toe black devotee myself, I've recently found myself dabbling in greys, and much as I'm loath to admit it, it seems my head has been permanently turned. For summer, a black dress is still my go-to, but now I'm styling it with a dove-grey cardi tied around my shoulders—not only as a British weather necessity, but to create a subtly chic colour contrast.

Animal print tends to split people into two distinct camps: lovers or haters. It sparks debates—is leopard print a neutral? (I’d argue yes) and can zebra print work for minimalists? (also, yes). Either way, the playful pattern is impossible to ignore right now.

A quick scroll through Google Trends proves it: searches for Adidas leopard-print trainers, animal-print maxi skirts and even animal-print duvet covers are climbing steadily. Meanwhile, on the Autumn/Winter 2025 runways, designers leaned into the statement print with full force.

Roberto Cavalli doubled down with leopard-print coats and snake-print co-ords, Balmain went bold with zebra, and Coach experimented with oversized, fuzzy faux fur.More labels still looked to animal print accessories as their entry point: Anna Sui’s hats, Brandon Maxwell’s leopard scarves, and luxe iterations from Prada and Bottega Veneta too—proof that even the most refined fashion houses can’t resist a walk on the wild side.

It’s a sentiment echoed by Marie Claire's very own Fashion Editor Clementina Jackson. “I wear a lot of black and neutral-coloured clothing, and tend towards a pared-back, minimalist style—so I have long been a fan of using animal print accessories to add some much-needed pizzazz to my looks,” she says. “There’s nothing cooler, in my opinion, than the unexpected pop of a leopard-print boot peeking out from beneath tailored trousers, elevating a classic LBD with a zebra-print bag, or the fun of pairing cow-print ballerinas with jeans and a T-shirt.”

Her styling advice? Invest wisely. "The trick is to choose accessories made from quality fabrics to ensure the prints feel chic rather than cheap—think leather, calf or pony hair,” Clementina adds. So yes, that Prada bag or those Alaïa heeled flip-flops are justified purchases. That said, high street gems can still hold their own. I, for one, recently picked up a pair of Topshop pony-hair cow-print mules and have never felt more easily inducted into the animal-print accessories pack. Vintage is also your friend here, says Clementina: "resale sites are treasure troves for timeless, well-made pieces."

Of course, the real question is which print to commit to. For first-timers, snake is an easy in—it comes in a wide range of shades and wears like a subtle neutral. Zebra, with its monochrome palette, feels tailor-made for minimalist wardrobes. Accessories: the final flourish of any outfit—capable of completely transforming a look, yet just as easily overlooked. I first spotted the eye-catching shade perched atop fellow fashion editor Angela Lei’s head.
