I've been contending with acne for most of my life, which has led me to discover the exact skincare that I can trust not to cause breakouts. That includes SPF for acne—because a product that I use on my face daily has to be one that my complexion agrees with. Not to mention, applying SPF daily can prevent dark spots and hyperpigmentation that can be left behind after a breakout.

Although my skin is now much clearer than it used to be, it only takes one misstep for my chin to flare up with whiteheads and painful red bumps under the skin. Best everyday formula

La Roche-Posay almost single-handedly saw me through my severely acne-riddled teenage years, and it was the first brand that made a noticeable difference to my breakouts and complexion. I've trusted the products for years, and this SPF is one of my top picks for anyone acne-prone. It's designed for oily skin types, including skin prone to blemishes and sensitivity, with a mattifying effect that will prevent shininess throughout the day. It has a very watery, milky formula that turns invisible on the skin and feels weightless too. Despite being matte, it doesn't feel at all drying or chalky on the skin, and it provides a smoothing base for makeup application on top. It's a true all-rounder for acne-prone skin with impressive SPF 50.

Best oil control

SkinCeuticals has slowly but surely become one of my holy grail brands. Yes, the products are on the pricier side, but I've yet to encounter one that isn't worth every penny. This SPF has a thicker formula more like a mineral sunscreen, but it's still extremely easy to blend in and it doesn't leave a white cast. It feels more matte than the La-Roche Posay SPF, both to apply and on the skin, but it still sits comfortably and doesn't dry me out even though my skin isn't excessively oily. It works wonders at keeping shine at bay, and it's perfect for humid weather and preventing makeup from sliding around on the face. If you have particularly oily acne-prone skin, this will make a very noticeable difference to your complexion.

Most affordable

Although this SPF is designed with oily skin in mind, it's also suitable for normal skin and isn't excessively mattifying. It has a smooth, milky formula that's lightweight, breathable, and fast-absorbing for an invisible finish that primes the skin for makeup. One of my favourite things about this SPF is that it contains niacinamide, which has always worked brilliantly for preventing breakouts in my skin. It keeps oil to a minimum all day and won't clog pores either.

Most hydrating

Another SPF containing niacinamide, Aesop's lotion formula is both hydrating and nourishing. It's my top recommendation if your skin needs some TLC due to any tightness or discomfort, particularly if you apply any drying nighttime skincare for spots. It functions just like a regular day moisturiser with the addition of sun protection, but it doesn't leave the skin greasy or shiny. NB: this SPF isn't fragrance-free, so if you don't respond well to fragrance, you may want to try another formula. However, it has never caused me to break out or have any irritation.

Best for severe acne

If you have very acne-prone skin that needs a lot of care and attention, Dr Sam's Daily Sunscreen is a foolproof option. It's specifically designed for blemish-prone skin, with a soft-focus primer-like finish that applies like a moisturiser. It's fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and formulated with niacinamide to brighten and boost the skin. It's an extremely minimalist SPF suitable for all skin types, and it perfectly balances sun protection with a comfortable feel that provides a skin-like finish with no added shine. It's a true all-rounder that will work for anyone with acne-prone skin.

Best SPF primer

For my skin, I've found that less is more—particularly in the daytime. The best way to keep my acne at bay is not going overboard under my makeup, and Charlotte Tilbury's SPF 50 primer offers exactly that. It kills two birds with one stone with priming and sun protection, as well as providing pollution defence to further halt skin stressors that can cause breakouts. It has a very subtle tint that leaves the skin with a beautiful glow and a weightless feel that's comfortable on the face. It also hydrates without a shiny finish, which makes for smooth makeup application.

Best lightweight SPF

The clue is in the name with Beauty Pie's SPF 50: it's a truly invisible, lightweight, watery formula that blends in with minimal effort. I've used it for years, and it has never failed me or caused blemishes. It's completely non-greasy and also acts as a primer, so you can expect a skin-like finish with natural radiance and no shine. The advanced UV filters also work to fight sunlight-induced inflammation, which can make red, painful breakouts less troublesome. With no white cast, it's suitable for all skin tones and requires minimal blending to sink in.

In the midst of these heatwaves, I want my skin to be as protected from UV rays as possible. That's why I love a multi-tasking foundation with SPF that can provide an extra barrier when I'll be spending several hours in the sun.

However, it's important to understand that SPF in foundation may not always be as effective as a regular SPF. That's primarily because we don't tend to apply nearly as thick a layer of foundation as we do sunscreen, meaning your skin won't be quite as protected. That's why I like to apply a lightweight SPF or SPF for under makeup underneath my foundation, so I can be sure my skin is fully prepped for the weather.

Best foundations with SPF, tried & tested

I will never stop raving about the Beauty Of Joseon Daily Tinted Fluid. Despite being tinted and offering the right amount of coverage to combat redness and uneven skin tone, it's actually a sunscreen first and a foundation second—meaning it really will protect the skin. It has a very watery consistency that blends like a dream, and it gives a hydrating boost that offers radiance too. I have a few acne scars to contend with, and it covers them beautifully and doesn't melt away in the heat. For me, it's the ideal everyday formula that feels weightless but really does even the skin and give a healthy, natural glow.

If you're on the hunt for a full coverage foundation with a high SPF, I've yet to find a formula better than RMS. It covers virtually all of my blemishes and discolouration, providing a blurring effect across the skin—with the addition of SPF 50. A little of this goes a long way, so it's one I like to layer with a regular sunscreen. Despite its high coverage, it doesn't feel thick or uncomfortable on the skin, instead acting more like a thicker tinted moisturiser. Containing a blend of niacinamide, marigold flower extract, jojoba seed oil and ashwagandha, it also smooths the skin, controls excess oils, and promotes radiance. A true all-rounder for the summer months.

I'm yet to encounter a base product more waterproof than this. Whether you're jumping in and out of the pool or need something to contend with sweat, Shiseido's Sports BB won't budge. Despite being lightweight, it offers impressive coverage that eradicates my need for concealer, and it's easy to blend with a brush or just with your hands. It has a fairly matte finish, but it also provides some radiance that keeps the skin fresh and healthy. With high SPF 50 and a quick-drying finish, it's my favourite to take on holiday when I want one base product that can do it all.

Mineral sunscreens are some of the best at protecting the skin because they get to work instantly—no sinking in time required. Merit's The Uniform is one of the very best mineral formulas that offers foundation-like coverage too. Although it's billed as a sheer coverage product, I find that it does a brilliant job at covering redness and uneven skin tone, even when I'm having a few breakouts. It's another base product that feels comfortable and light on the skin thanks to how easily it blends, and it has a gorgeous skin-like finish that is neither too matte nor too shiny. Plus, it's non-comedogenic and oil-free, making it suitable for acne-prone skin too.

A skincare-makeup hybrid, Laura Mercier's tinted moisturiser with SPF 30 is one of my most worn base products of all time. Although it promises sheer-light coverage, it's another one that works brilliantly at evening skin tone and masking darker spots—and the formula is buildable, so you can get more coverage if you need it. But my favourite thing about it is how hydrating it is, leaving the skin perfectly dewy and luminous. It's completely weightless, but works to soothe the skin which is a welcome treat in hot weather. It never clings to or accentuates any drier patches, and it stays put throughout the day.

Powder foundations seem to have fallen out of favour in recent years, but I'm here to tell you that they should not be dismissed. I've been using this bareMinerals formula since I was a teenager, and I'm always pleasantly surprised by the coverage and finish. You might expect it to give a dull, matte look, but it's extremely radiant and blurring with a skin-like appearance. Most unexpectedly, it has incredible coverage that conceals even angry red blemishes—perhaps better than some liquid formulas. It works wonders for oily skin, but the breathable formula means it suits normal and combination skin too. It's a mineral SPF 15, so I recommend layering it with a higher SPF in the summer for optimum protection.

I'm yet to try an Hourglass product that I don't get along with, and this is one of the best foundations with SPF if you want radiance, coverage, and protection. It has a slightly tackier formula than other liquid foundations straight out of the tube, but it blends like butter and gives medium coverage that doesn't crease or transfer—essential in hot weather. It also benefits the skin as you wear it; as well as SPF 30, it uses Advanced Hydra-Smoothing Technology (a blend of hyaluronic microspheres) to lock in moisture while visibly improving skin texture. A lighter layer is ideal for daytime wear, but I also love it for building coverage for full glam occasions. The result is a truly flawless, glowy finish with zero cakiness.

If there's one thing I can't stand, it's a thick, chalky facial sunscreen. Not only do they feel uncomfortable on the skin, but they can also make makeup application a nightmare. That's why I've made it my mission to find lightweight facial SPFs that offer brilliant protection but are invisible on the skin and sink in effortlessly. After some serious testing, I've finally discovered formulas I can wear daily that leave no trace.

Although I love an SPF moisturiser, it doesn't always offer enough protection in the summer months. Not to mention, they don't tend to have any water-resistant properties to contend with swimming or sweat.

Best lightweight facial SPFs 2026

The Augustinus Bader sunscreen is one of the Marie Claire team's all-time favourites, and it's still one of my most used SPFs over a year after its launch. There's so much to love about this formula, from its patented healing Trigger Factor Complex (TFC8®) that enhances the skin to its beautifully hydrating finish that leaves the skin with a natural glow—no greasiness whatsoever. The high SPF 50 protects you even on the sunniest of days, and it helps minimise the appearance of fine lines, dullness and age spots whilst you wear it. It has a moisturiser-like finish with a creamy feel, and it sinks in almost immediately with an invisible finish. Yes, it's on the pricey side, but considering the wonders it does for your skin, I think it's more than worth it.

Not only is CeraVe's Invisible Hydrating Fluid Sunscreen one of the most affordable on the market, but it boasts a milky formula with zero white cast. Infused with three essential ceramides, it helps to hydrate the skin for a radiant, plumped appearance, and it nourishes your moisture barrier too. It has a subtly dewy finish that layers very nicely with makeup, but it doesn't get shiny or oily throughout the day. I'm a big fan of the squeezy packaging for easy application, and it's suitable for all skin types and colours. If you have problematic skin and want a fragrance-free formula that won't trigger breakouts, this is a brilliant option.

I'm a sucker for a milky SPF, but not all lightweight sunscreens fall into that category. A milky formula tends to be both light and extra hydrating, ideal for dry or dehydrated skin types that need a nourishing boost. Tatcha's newest SPF does exactly that, leaving a dewy finish that makes the skin naturally glowy. I love how undetectable this sunscreen is, as well as how well it instantly soothes tight skin thanks to vitamin E and encapsulated ectoin. You can expect zero white cast and day-long hydration that keeps you protected from UV rays.

More like a tinted serum than a traditional SPF, La Roche Posay's Anthelios UVAIR formula has a thicker finish than other lightweight facial sunscreens. However, it blends in within seconds and sinks right into the skin for comfortable wear with a natural finish. It's more on the matte side, offering a skin-like appearance with concealing and blurring properties. It doesn't provide full coverage in the way a foundation would, but it definitely reduces my redness and makes any dark spots or discolouration much less noticeable. It's my top pick if you want a your-skin-but-better look with UV protection, and the finish lasts up to 16 hours to contend with the summer heat. I'm wearing shade light, and it hardly took any blending with my hands to get a natural look.

The beauty of an SPF mist is how versatile it is; wear under or over makeup without disturbing your products, and use it to top up throughout the day too. Garnier's formula is as close to weightless as it gets, whilst still providing SPF 50 to keep your skin protected. The addition of vitamin C helps to lighten dark spots on the face and add some glow, and the mist itself disappears almost instantly after spraying. The only downside is that it doesn't last as long as liquid formulas, but the budget-friendly price tag makes it more than worth it.

It's no secret that sun exposure can make dark spots and hyperpigmentation worse, so a formula that protects from UV rays and addresses these skin concerns is a winner in my book. Ranavat's mineral formula offers instant SPF 50 protection, as well as saffron to brighten and squalane to moisturise skin and strengthen the skin barrier. It's light and dewy when squeezed out, and feels significantly lighter and smoother than other mineral sunscreens that tend to be thicker. I love it as an even base for applying makeup with no slipperiness, and the added skincare benefits make it a 2-in-1 product in my daily routine.

If I'm on holiday, I rarely go a full hour without jumping in the pool or sea—so a water-resistant SPF is essential. But even when I'm at home, a London heatwave also calls for UV protection that I won't sweat off. The Dr. Dennis Gross All Physical Ultimate Defense SPF 50 is both water and sweat-resistant for long lasting protection, but it's another sunscreen that has a hydrating and milky formula. The finish is very subtly dewy without oiliness, and it has both a pump and squeezy tube so you can get every last drop. Another huge plus is that it's fragrance-free, so won't irritate sensitive or acne-prone skin.

This SPF was the first Beauty of Joseon product I fell in love with, and you can see from my almost-empty tube that it's been well loved. It sits somewhere between a milk and a cream, so it's extremely light as well as nourishing and hydrating. It's completely non-greasy and suitable for all skin types thanks to the gentle formula, and it's one of my favourites for wearing under makeup. It provides a hydrated base without any chalkiness whatsoever, acting like a gorgeous primer. Plus, it's ridiculously affordable for SPF 50.

Few products have found continued virality quite like La Roche Posay's Cicaplast. But as someone with a history of severe acne, I've always shied away from more occlusive products for fear of provoking blemishes. After putting Cicaplast Baume SPF 50 to the test, I realise just what I've been missing out on with this product.

Touted as a nourishing balm that soothes and protects irritated skin and even minor injuries, the original Cicaplast balm can be used for everything from moisturising to helping to reduce sebaceous filaments on the nose. The SPF 50 version offers all this, with the added benefit of sun protection too.

Other heroes from the Cicaplast range been staples in my daily routine for years, so it's no surprise that this is now joining their ranks. After a week of testing, these are my honest thoughts on Cicaplast Baume SPF 50—and exactly why it's joined the ranks of my long-standing sunscreen favourites for dry areas.

Cicaplast Baume SPF 50: My review

I've long been aware of the original Cicaplast and its benefits, particularly for healing ultra-dry and damaged skin. However, it never really felt like something I needed. I'm more on the oily side, and my aforementioned fear of clogging my pores and inviting acne into my life was enough to put me off. But after discovering the SPF 50 formula, I was suitably intrigued.

My number one question was how this product could possibly function as a sunscreen. I was under the assumption that it was extremely thick and not all that easy to rub in, so the thought of applying it over my face? A no-go. But after swatching on my hand, I realised just how easily the formula sinks in and dries down.

Although it's designed to be applied on specific problem areas rather than all over, I wanted to see if it would work across my face. The swatch made me confident enough to apply it in a thin layer, to see exactly how it would fare throughout the day and whether it would agree with my skin.

I'm pleased to report, I was extremely pleasantly surprised. It smoothed over my skin nicely and sank in much quicker than I was expecting. I was prepared for a greasy, shiny finish due to the creamy formula, but it didn't take long to settle and leave a skin-like texture.

I used slightly more around my nose and on dry patches, and it did a brilliant job at soothing those areas and helping with the texture that appears.

It also sat comfortably on my face all day with noticeable hydration. However, owing to the fact that it isn't intended as a full facial SPF, I did find that it caused some pilling with makeup towards the end of the day.

Moving forward, I combined it with my regular SPF—applying a base of my everyday sunscreen and topping it up with Cicaplast SPF 50 around my nose and on any dry, itchy patches that cropped up. This method is definitely the key to success. It allowed me to fully protect my skin from UV rays whilst tackling dry patches and texture where needed.

Who should use Cicaplast Baume SPF 50?

Now, it's important to note that Cicaplast Baume SPF 50 is not designed to be an all-over suncream that you'll wear every day—unless you have very damaged or fragile skin. Rather, it's a soothing treatment that can be applied to problem areas and irritations to help to soothe, heal, and protect from the sun.

It does a brilliant job at protecting and nourishing difficult areas of the skin without compromising on SPF protection. It instantly calms the skin once it's applied, making it a very welcome balm to have on hand for any issues that may crop up.

My favourite way to apply it has been around my nose where I get very dry, and on places like my shoulders, elbows, and knees where I'm prone to dryness or suffer with some peeling after being in the sun. It can also be used to nourish tattoos and protect them from the sun, or on grazes that are healing.

But, if you are someone who feels as though you could benefit from using it across your face, I can confirm that it's fit for purpose—and will relieve discomfort whilst keeping UV at bay.

Whether it’s the depths of winter or the height of summer, I can’t remember the last time I stepped foot outside the house without applying sunscreen to my face. Should we wear SPF every day on our body?

I’d love to give you an answer that requires less of a daily commitment but, in a word, yes. “Daily SPF is important because UV exposure occurs all year round, not just in the summer or on sunny days,” says Consultant Dermatologist Dr Derrick Phillips. “UVB, which is mainly responsible for sunburn, peaks in the warmer months, but UVA remains at steady levels throughout the year,” he explains. And it’s these UVA rays which are the ones that can pass through clouds and windows, so you’re always at risk of exposure, even on days that look grey or when you’re working inside by a window. “UVA penetrates deep into the skin, contributing to pigmentation, premature ageing, and plays a role in the development of skin cancer, so wearing SPF every day is a simple and effective way to protect your skin,” he says.

Choosing the best SPF for body

I’ll admit that one of the things that has put me off for a long time about applying sunscreen regularly to my body is that I’m always in a rush, and the thought of applying a layer of cream that’s going to feel tacky or stick to my clothes just isn’t it. Thankfully, modern SPF formulas are so much more advanced, and plenty of them are a joy to use. “Choosing the right SPF texture makes a big difference to how it feels on the skin and how likely you are to use it every day,” says Dr Phillips. “The best approach is to match the formulation to your skin type and how your skin behaves throughout the day. For sensitive skin, mineral filters can be helpful as they are generally well tolerated, while dry skin might benefit from richer creams that contain hydrating ingredients to prevent that tight feeling.”

2. Gun Ana Moisturising High Protection UV Body Mist SPF 50

Not only is this one of the chicest SPFs I’ve ever seen, but the lightweight packaging and spray applicator mean it’s one that I’ll have in my bag all summer long when I’m out and about. The formula itself is a water-based dry oil infused with rosehip and oat oils for a hit of hydration—perfect for combatting the dryness that can hit skin when it’s in the sun. It has an ultra-fine mist that makes topping up really easy, although it can be a little harder to make sure that you’re hitting every area compared with a traditional cream. However, it’s so delightful to use that you’ll be more than happy to mist away to make sure that your skin is protected with that reassuring SPF 50 coverage.

3. Ultra Violette Extreme Screen Hydrating Body & Hand Skinscreen SPF 50+

Ultra Violette is known for their concept of 'skinscreens', which are effectively SPFs formulated with skincare-first ingredients so they feel incredible on the skin. This one is perfect for anyone who’s ever struggled with sun creams that feel chalky, tight or dehydrating on this skin, as it’s the total antidote. It’s infused with pentavitin, which helps to lock moisture into the skin all day, soothing aloe, along with a subtle shimmer, makes even the driest of limbs look smooth and glowy. I especially love using it as a hand cream, where most of us tend to forget about sun protection entirely, as the texture is so beautifully silky and nourishing.

4. La Roche-Posay Anthelios Hydrating Lotion SPF 50+

Anyone out there who finds themselves dealing with prickly heat rash or general sun intolerance will get on well with this high-protection formula from dermatologist-approved skincare brand La Roche-Posay. It’s incredibly gentle, fragrance-free, and the milky texture means that it spreads over skin easily and blends in fast without you having to excessively rub sensitive skin. It isn’t a formula with lots of bells and whistles, but it does the job well and ensures that delicate skin has broad-spectrum protection. A particularly good choice if you’re looking for just one SPF that kids and adults will get on well with.

5. Nuxe Sun Oil Shimmering Gold SPF 50

This is an SPF made for holidays. Whether it’s adding a little glam when you’re lounging by the pool or for re-applying before you go for late afternoon cocktails, this luxurious oil glides over skin and imparts a golden shimmer that catches the light beautifully. I was a little dubious about using an oil formula at first, but it’s impressively fast-absorbing and doesn’t feel in the slightest bit greasy. Instead, skin is left with a silky, sheeny, expensive-looking finish and the most gorgeous glow. Plus, if you’ve ever smelt any of Nuxe’s products before, then it’s infused with their trademark scent and means you smell amazing too.

6. Vichy Capital Soleil Solar Protective Water SPF 50

During the height of summer, when skin can start to feel tight and dry, this is like a big drink of water for parched limbs, and it feels delightfully cool and fresh. Formulated with Vichy’s mineralising water and hyaluronic acid, it provides deep hydration along with SPF 50 protection. Best of all, though, there’s no heaviness or residue, so it’s ideal for really hot and sticky days or if you simply don’t love traditional sun creams.

7. Caudalie Invisible High Protection Spray SPF 50

There is truly nothing worse than applying your sun lotion only to find yellow marks on your clothing at the end of the day. Thankfully, this one from Caudalie delivers exactly what it promises on the bottle—SPF 50 protection with a totally invisible finish. And it truly does disappear into the skin, leaving no trace of white cast or stickiness, and absolutely no marks on your clothing. It’s a brilliant all-rounder as you can use it on your face too, and it also defends against blue light and infrared rays for added protection.

8. Supergoop! PLAY Everyday Lotion SPF 50

Supergoop! is one of my go-to brands for facial SPF, but I only recently discovered this brilliant does-it-all SPF. It’s a bit of a cult favourite in the industry, and for good reason—it covers all bases. Whatever you’re doing or whatever your skin type, chances are this sunscreen will appeal. It’s easy to apply, comfortable to wear, sinks in quickly, and provides broad-spectrum protection, and while it has the texture of a decent body lotion, it isn’t overly rich or cloying. Plus, you can get it in a variety of sizes, from a portable mini to an enormous half-litre bottle with a huge pump

Most of us understand the damage that UVA and UVB rays from the sun can cause, but fewer realise that blue light (including from our digital devices and screens) can also affect our skin health.

We're exposed to blue light every day, mainly from the sun, with smaller amounts coming digitally and via LED lighting, explains Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Derrick Phillips. But people are less aware of the effects of blue light because the evidence is relatively new. "For decades, sun safety messaging has quite rightly focused on UV radiation, as its link to skin cancer and ageing has been well established. By comparison, we’re only now beginning to understand how blue light affects the skin, particularly in relation to pigmentation and premature ageing, so public awareness has yet to catch up with the science."

What is blue light and how does it impact skin?

"Blue light is the shortest wavelength and highest-energy form of visible light, and the biggest source we’re exposed to is the sun," explains the dermatologist. "Because of this high energy, blue light can penetrate deeper into the skin than many people realise and trigger processes that contribute to skin ageing and pigmentation."

Studies show that blue light can stimulate melanin production, making dark spots and uneven pigmentation more likely, particularly in skin tones that are already prone to pigmentation. It also creates oxidative stress in the skin, which can accelerate the breakdown of collagen, the protein responsible for keeping skin firm and resilient, and thus contribute to premature ageing.

Does blue light from digital devices damage skin?

Although blue light is also emitted by phones, laptops and indoor lighting, Dr Phillips stresses that the intensity is much lower than that of sunlight.

"Current evidence suggests that it’s solar blue light that has the most meaningful impact on the skin, while everyday screen exposure is unlikely to cause significant damage." As such, screen settings are more important for eye comfort and sleep than for protecting the skin.

What sunscreens protect against blue light?

Remember: not all sunscreens protect against blue light, so it’s important to look beyond the SPF number.

"While a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or 50 is essential for UV protection, blue light sits within the visible light spectrum. To protect against it, the sunscreen needs specific filters that block high-energy visible (HEV) light," explains Dr Phillips. "This may be clearly stated on the label, or achieved through ingredients such as iron oxides, which are found in tinted mineral sunscreens and are particularly helpful for those prone to pigmentation. Some newer chemical filters, such as TriAsorB™, also offer protection in the visible light range."

But, he adds, topical antioxidants also play an important supporting role. "Blue light generates oxidative stress within the skin. Using antioxidant-rich skincare helps neutralise this damage at the source and is more relevant than dietary antioxidants for skin protection. Plus, maintaining a healthy skin barrier also helps the skin better tolerate environmental stressors."

Best SPF's to protect against blue light

I really love a multi-tasking product. Not only do they take up less valuable space in my ever-bulging makeup bag, but they also save me time and money. So if a beauty product doubles up on jobs, i'm usually a fan from the get-go.

I went on a family staycation earlier this month, and as I knew that my car would be filled to the brim with the endless amount of things my children would need for a few nights away, when it came to my skincare and cosmetics I made sure that I only packed items that were multi-use. This included my usual double-duty favourites like a lip and cheek stain and a tinted moisturiser, but I also stashed the new Green People Glow & Protect SPF30 in my bag to try too. This clever newbie is a self-tan with SPF, so I planned to slather it on each morning before heading out, knowing that I’d be ticking-off two laborious summer jobs at once, and all with just one bottle.

I’ve been a long-time fan of Green People for gentle day creams and cleansing products so I had high hopes, but it's the first tanner that i'd used from the organic brand, and I really wasn’t sure what to expect. I put it to the test by using it daily during the first half of my week away, and I’m very pleased to report that I was massively impressed—it really was perfect for pepping up my skin for a few days in the sun.

I applied the self-tan with SPF to both my face and body each morning for three days and found that it built up a very soft and light kind of sun-kissed colour on my naturally pale skin, that started to show on day two. The colour pay-off wasn’t as deep as some other gradual tanners I love like Garnier Summer Body and might not make a huge difference to those with darker skin tones, but for me it created a lovely, subtle kind of glow on my limbs that really lifted my cooler complexion without any orange-y tinge, and I found that the colour stuck around for a good couple of days too.

As well as building sunny colour on my skin, this cream also kept it safe as it contains broad spectrum SPF30 to protect from both UVA and UVB rays. It’s designed to be applied onto skin 30mins before going outside and promises to protect for the standard 2-3 hours. This was perfect for starting the day and then I topped up my coverage with a quick spritz of Ultra Violette Preen Screen SPF50 Reapplication Mist while I was out and about.

As with the rest of the range from the natural-based brand, the multi-tasking cream nourishes and cares for skin brilliantly. The formula contains a hero blend of hydrating hyaluronic acid, calming aloe vera and soothing green tea to soften and smooth skin to keep it in top condition, while also working it's magic with colour and protection. It uses DHA and Erythrulose to build the tan tint but it's designed to be extra gentle and promises to be safe for even sensitive skin types. It also contains natural oils to help it to glide over skin easily (and keep dreaded streaks at bay!) and gives the cream a lovely soft botanical smell too—the scent feels very uplifting and fresh while you apply but it doesn’t linger or feel overpowering, and its much nicer than the traditional biscuit-y aroma that often comes with tanners.

While it may not be as stylish and fun to look at as some of the other skincare on my bathroom shelves, the understated and straight-forward white and orange tube looks chic enough, and the pump applicator is easy to use and lets out just the right amount of product with each squeeze. This meant I didn’t overload with cream and it avoided any waste or mess.

I really enjoyed using the product but the only issue I had with it was the slightly thicker texture of the cream. It has a pale yellow colour to it which blended invisibly but the heavier consistency of the lotion took a couple of minutes to rub in fully. It wasn’t the speediest application compared to some other gradual products I’ve used, but because it does do two jobs in one, I still saved time compared to applying both tan and my SPF before heading out the door. It also meant that I didn't have to load up my skin with two separate products during the hot weather, so I avoided any uncomfortable stickiness too.

The thicker consistency also meant that I applied it much more sparingly over my face—I rubbed just a pea sized amount between my hands and pressed and patted it over my skin, rather than swiping it over too heavily, and I found it really worked to lift my complexion without over-loading it.

As I mentioned, I used this self-tan with SPF for a few consecutive mornings and by day three I had the perfect level of streak-free, soft golden colour on my skin that stuck around well – even after a day spent building sandcastles on the beach and splashing about in the sea. While it won't be the tanning product that i'd reach for if I’m in a hurry to apply, I love that it doubled up on two jobs at once and that it can be used from top to toe – it was perfect for my coastal getaway and I will definitely be applying this colour-meets-care product over the last few weeks of summer too. This one is called 'Glow & Protect' and it really does do both brilliantly.

Talk to any beauty editor, and they will tell you that sunscreen is the one skincare step that should never, ever be skipped. The key to making this a natural part of your everyday routine is finding an SPF that works for you, and if you're someone who wants instant sun protection that doesn't require sinking in time, one of the best mineral sunscreens could be it.

I have spent years carefully curating my collection of the best facial sunscreens and SPF moisturisers, and mineral formulas are the ones I turn to most often in the summer months. This is because, unlike chemical sunscreens, mineral sunscreens don't require any waiting time before you expose yourself to the sun—the UV filters get to work as soon as they're applied.

What is a mineral sunscreen?

The clue is in the name: mineral sunscreens are made with either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide minerals, which essentially work like a mask on your face to keep the UV rays away.

"Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are considered safer for sensitive skin and the environment," explains Holly Mason, founder of The Skin Investment Clinic. This is because they sit on the skin's surface to reflect UV rays away from your face, so they don't absorb in the same way as chemical formulas.

Mineral formulas developed a bit of a bad reputation for having a thick and chalky-white finish, which made them unsuitable for deeper skin tones. However, they have come on a long way in the last few years, with seamless and lightweight finishes now readily available.

"Prolonged sun exposure without adequate protection and trying to get a sunburn will more than double the risk of developing melanoma in later life. Most sun exposure happens before age 18, but the skin never “forgets” a burn," says Mason. "What might seem like a temporary tan now can lead to premature ageing, sunspots, and skin cancer decades earlier than expected."

This is why I typically favour mineral sunscreens—I can apply one seconds before going out in the sun and I know I'm already protected, unlike chemical formulas which require more time to work.

Cetaphil has always been one of my most trusted brands for my acne-prone skin, so I knew this mineral sunscreen would agree with me. It's moisturising, lightweight, invisible on the skin, and water resistant for 120 minutes, making it perfect for holiday packing. If you have particularly sensitive or breakout-prone skin, you can be certain this won't cause any problems. It's on the matte side, so I often apply a glow serum or primer over the top for an added dewy boost.

Dr Sam's Flawless Daily Sunscreen SPF 50

Not only is the Flawless Daily Sunscreen one of the best Dr Sam's products, but it's probably one of the best mineral sunscreens full stop. It's is moisturising, lightweight, comfortable on the skin, perfect for wearing under makeup, and provides ample coverage for the summer months. It also comes at a great price point compared to others on the market, and it's safe for acne and clog-prone skin. It does have a thicker texture than some other mineral sunscreens, but it rubs in easily and doesn't leave any trace.

Merit The Uniform Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

If you're particularly dedicated to your current skincare routine and would rather incorporate your sun protection into your makeup, this is the product for you. I love using this Merit formula instead of foundation during the summer, mainly because it's so much lighter and more comfortable to wear in hot weather, but also because it covers up my redness well and means I only need to add a bit of concealer for blemishes. It has a dewy finish that boosts the complexion, and offers impressive SPF 50 for reliable protection.

Tatcha The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50

Tatcha's SPF is one of the more expensive options on the market, but it's really worth it. It has a gorgeous golden colour that blends out to be clear yet impossibly glowy on the skin. I regularly wear it without any other base makeup and it makes me feel instantly revived. The formula is extremely light and it also features niacinamide and hyaluronic acid to smooth skin, minimise pores, reduce redness, and improve texture. It's a true all-rounder mineral formula that's a minimal-effort complexion booster.

Beauty Of Joseon Daily Tinted Fluid Sunscreen SPF30

Another tinted option, the Beauty of Joseon SPF has a more sheer finish than Merit and a more watery texture. It's a true skin tint that promotes a radiant complexion but isn't as makeup-like as other formulas. Think of it like a tinted moisturiser rather than a makeup-adjacent buy. It has built-in oil control making it an ideal option if oiliness is a concern of yours, but it works for all skin types that want to channel the glass skin look.

Kate Somerville HydraKate Illuminating SPF 50+ Drops

My Kate Somerville SPF review tells you how much of a fan I am of this formula. I recommend it highly for those with dry skin as it has a very hydrating finish. Yes, it's on the oilier side, but I love it for my combination skin because it offers unrivalled illumination. It's also water resistant, and uses sheer pigments to reduce the appearance of imperfections, meaning it suits my acne-prone skin down to the ground. It has a very similar finish to the Tatcha SPF, but with even more of a hydrating boost.

Supergoop! Protec(tint) Daily Skin Tint SPF50

I always pack this Supergoop mineral suncream when I'm travelling. It comes in a handy little bottle that can fit in any makeup bag, and like other SPF tints, it's a base product and sunscreen in one. This one gets my vote because it's buildable, so I can use it in the evenings on holiday when I want a more glam look. It has a skin-like finish that isn't too shiny, so it's ideal for those who want neither a matte nor glowy SPF. It also contains hyaluronic acid-infused clay which balances moisture and sebum levels.

My quest for the perfect facial SPF is never-ending. I have a fairly large roster of formulas I know and love, but I get through suncream faster than any other item in my arsenal, so I will never stop looking for the next best thing. The latest SPF to wow me? Tropic's Sun Day Facial UV Defence, which gives me the dewy (but never oily) finish of my dreams.

It seems like SPFs are getting more and more pricey these days. And I understand—there's a reason why they cost what they do, and few (if any) skincare steps are as crucial. But in a market saturated with expensive luxury serums and cheap, chalky formulas that just aren't comfortable to wear, I welcome a mid-range, lightweight product with open arms.

Ask any dermatologist for their golden rule for healthy skin, and chances are they’ll say the same thing: wear your SPF every single day. Yes, we beauty editors hate to hark on about it, but it is a skincare non-negotiable. There are many days that I skip my base products entirely and just wear this with a little bit of concealer, but if you are applying other products on top, then they’ll layer beautifully. Even better, it’s packed with skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and vitamin B5 to plump, smooth and hydrate skin. My only gripe? Please bring this out in an SPF 50 version, Supergoop!

2. Ultra Violette Queen Screen SPF 50+ Luminising Skinscreen Serum

Ultra Violette is also a huge innovator in the SPF space, and its much-hyped Queen Screen formula is deserving of the buzz. In fact, it was this product which got me absolutely hooked on the brand. It has a really unique milky serum texture that melts like butter into your skin, leaving it velvet-soft and beautifully sheeny. I will say, though, this is majorly dewy. And while I personally don’t mind looking like a glazed doughnut, if you do have oily skin like me, then you might not love how overtly shiny this SPF is, especially after a few hours of wear. Drier complexions and those who love an intense sheen, however, will drink this up.

3. Murad Superactive Moisturiser SPF 50: Brightening

If you’re after a sunscreen that will not only instantly brighten your skin and offer protection from UV rays, but will actually improve the look of your skin with continued wear, then Murad’s vitamin C-infused SPF has been rigorously tested to deliver just that. While it certainly delivers on that instant hit of luminosity, the addition of a superactive vitamin C to fade existing dark spots and pigmentation alongside lipid-boosting technology, which boosts moisture levels and plumps skin with ceramides, means that my skin actually looks way more even and healthy since I started testing this a few weeks back. For me, it’s post-acne marks that it has really helped to alleviate, but overall, my skin definitely looks clearer and fresher.

4. Kate Somerville HydraKate Illuminating SPF 50+ Drops

Despite only launching earlier this year, I know so many fellow beauty editors who are obsessed with this glow-boosting SPF. And while it isn’t so unusual for a sunscreen to capture the attention of the industry, what is rare is for it to be a mineral SPF, which typically are known for their quite heavy textures and white cast. This one, however, is neither. In fact, it’s incredibly lightweight, beautifully sheer and lends a beautiful satin sheen to skin. I will say that, for me, it feels a little oilier than I’d like, but it does have an incredible ability to sink into skin and blur over pores, redness and any uneven texture. In fact, you’d easily be able to wear this alone as a base product, as it makes skin look that good.

5. Kosas DreamBeam Sunscreen SPF 30

There’s a fine line between glow and shine, especially if you have oily skin like me, and this sunscreen from Kosas nails it. Not only does the mineral formula protect skin from the sun, but it keeps excess oiliness at bay without dialling down the radiance. Available in two shades—Original (my favourite), which is a peachy-pink and Sunlit, which is a golden bronze—it instantly brightens skin, boosts glow, and neutralises any discolouration in your skin. I’ll often skip make-up entirely when I wear this, as I love how naturally fresh and smooth it leaves my skin looking.

6. L'Oréal Paris Bright Reveal UV Fluid Tinted Glow Bronze SPF50+

If your mornings tend to whizz by in a bit of a blur and you often find yourself skipping sunscreen because you simply don’t have time to add another step to your routine, then this tinted SPF from L'Oréal Paris might suit. Not only does it have the essential sunscreen protection (in SPF 50+ no less), but it’s infused with a tinted bronze glow that not only works to fake a subtly sun-kissed complexion, but the dermatologically-tested formula also harnesses niacinamide to help fade dark spots and even skin tone over time. A brilliant all-rounder at a high-street price point.

7. Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Dew Shield SPF 30

While it’s important to wear SPF year-round, it becomes even more crucial during the summer months when the UV rays are higher and even oily skin is prone to dehydration. And for those occasions, this new sunscreen from Glow Recipe acts like a much-needed glass of water for parched complexions. Harnessing glow-boosting skincare ingredients inspired by K-beauty, it’s packed with watermelon, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid for deep nourishment and boasts the kind of dewy finish that would normally require layers of primer, skin tint and highlighter to achieve. 8. Hello Sunday The Illuminating One Glow Primer SPF50

A lot of the illuminating SPFs on this list double up as great primers, but this one from Hello Sunday has been specifically formulated to be used as one, and it really does a brilliant job of improving the longevity of any products you layer on top. Not only that, but the infusion of vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and light-reflecting mica pigments means that it creates a really luminous base that shines through any skin tints or foundations that you apply afterwards. If you don’t love a really high-shine finish, then this might not be for you—it definitely has some shimmer to it—but as prep for a glowy summer make-up look, it’s brilliant.

Beloved by dermatologists, beauty editors and skincare fanatics alike, Mecca Cosmetica is an Australian-born skincare brand with one of their sunscreens reportedly selling once every 60 seconds in Australia and New Zealand. Although distribution isn’t as wide in the UK, you can nab their efficacious SPFs directly from their website and this one is well worth considering if you’re in your 30s or over and are looking for a sunscreen that will help protect your skin from signs of ageing but also minimise any existing fine lines while boosting brightness. This feels much more like a luxury moisturiser than a traditional SPF, yet it has all of the broad spectrum protection that you’d want from one, alongside a hefty dose of hydration and pearly glow.

I never skip applying facial sunscreen to my face. I wear it every single day without fail. However, like so many, when it comes to reapplying it later on in the day, I’m a lot less reliable. I am fully aware that experts advise topping up sun protection every couple of hours, but if I’m honest, it’s not very often that I remember to do it.

I know I’m not the only one. A quick survey of my friends and colleagues revealed that I'm not alone in this. Most of them told me that they are strict with application during their early morning routine, but then tend to go all day without any top-ups. For me, there are two reasons that it doesn't end up happening: being busy and not thinking about it, and worrying that reapplication will disrupt my make-up. What I need is an SPF to apply over make-up.

Recently, I have found some handy products that make reapplying easier. Naked Sundays CobanaGlow Mineral Serum Drops is wonderfully light and sits over my make-up without any drama, and Garnier Ambre Solaire Over Makeup Super UV Mist SPF50+ is a total classic and is often stashed in my handbag. I like both, but I still found the whole reapplication process a bit hit and miss.

I decided to give Ultra Violette Preen Screen SPF50 Reapplication Mist—a product designed specifically for on-the-go top-ups—a try. The spray contains SPF50 and broad spectrum, which means it protects from both UVA and UVB rays. As well as offering high protection, this mist also contains an impressive line-up of skincare ingredients to care for your complexion while you wear it. Vitamin E, bisabolol, niacinamide and aloe vera work together to tackle a range of issues, including excess oils, visible pores and redness to leave your face looking and feeling better after each spritz.

I set myself a challenge to use it for a full two weeks and see if it could be enough to make me more reliable with my later-in-the-day SPF. Here are my honest thoughts…

Preen Screen comes in a 75ml bottle (I was instantly a fan of the playful navy and hot pink packaging), which comes with a pump spray applicator rather than an aerosol mist, which is a big tick. The instructions recommend applying in an ‘X’ and a ‘T’ shape over your face, and it’s designed to be spritzed onto a fresh complexion, after skincare or over make-up without any worries.

I find that just three or four sprays are enough to cover my face and neck. For the first few seconds, it feels a little wet on skin like a traditional refreshing face mist, but it quickly absorbs, without any stickiness. It's completely sheer, so it doesn’t mess up my blusher or eyeliner, and it works well to disappear while leaving my complexion looking a little fresher and dewy.

I applied each morning before leaving the house, and then stashed it in my handbag while I was out and about. During the first few days, I set a reminder on my phone, which helped. Misting it over my face was a total doddle while I was getting on with my day. The pump spray applies just the right amount of product and directly to my face rather than a big cloud of mist, so I could use it pretty discreetly in a coffee shop or even on the bus without feeling self-conscious. I like how well it settled and left my make-up completely undisturbed, but at the same time, gave my skin a midday refresh. It feels like a lot like a hydrating face mist combined with a make-up setting spray, with the added bonus of SPF.

The only very minor issue I had with this facial SPF is the scent. When you first spritz it there's a classic chemical-ly suncream aroma that I found a little bit off-putting, but thankfully, once it dries down the smell disappears completely and doesn't linger.

I have been trying to use this spray as regularly as possible, and although I will admit there were a few times that I missed a few reapplications, it was always down to simply forgetting or getting distracted rather than disliking the product. I enjoyed using this mist, and it's by far one of the most straightforward ways that I have found to top-up.

I can’t promise that my afternoon sun protection routine will be perfect this summer, but it's definitely going to be easier now I have this cheery bottle in my bag.

There's one thing on every beauty editor's minds and lips at the moment—SPF. It makes sense given the recent change in weather, but it's safe to say that our benchmarks for a good sunscreen are ever rising. Gone are the days of slapping your supermarket own brand suncream over your face too; now it's all about the optimum facial formula.

I'm somewhat of a beauty hoarder, and I've been trying to break the habit by going as minimal as possible with my skincare. However, there's one thing I will never say no to, and that's facial SPF. Yes, I've tried countless wonderful formulas over the years, from the best SPF moisturisers to the best sun cream for your body, but I will never stop looking for the next best thing.

Parisian brand Filorga has recently entered my sphere, and I was suitably intrigued by the SPF 50 and UVA/UVB protection, as well as the range of active ingredients that work to strengthen the skin's repair process, reduce pigmentation spots, and firm the skin in one. Many of the best facial sunscreens don't include many skincare benefits besides the obvious, so I was all ears.

After using this formula for the last few weeks, I think I may have found one of my favourite launches for the summer. Non-greasy, lightweight, suitable for sensitive skin and free from a white cast, it ticks every box.

My love for extra shiny skin has been very well documented; I love rich creams, dewy foundations and glowy cheek colour that reflects light. Typically this means that I don't mind skincare products that are on the oilier side, but I've been finding that I need something a little more matte for daytime wear to ensure that my makeup doesn't slide off my face as soon as I leave the house. And yes, despite my resistance to believe it, there is such a thing as too much shine sometimes.

Then there's the case of applying makeup. I still haven't learnt my lesson that I need to let my suncream of choice sink in before layering on the base products. However, waiting for my skincare to fully dry down before applying my makeup just isn't realistic every. day (especially when I'm rushing to the office), so having a reliable SPF that I know I can apply my foundation directly on top of is a total game-changer.

If you're one for matte skin or you like a hydrating but non-greasy base, you will love this formula. I’ll try not to spend too much time waxing lyrical about how important it is to wear SPF every day because, truth be told, I think most of us know. Besides the obvious—that it protects your skin from the major health issues that exposure to UVA and UVB rays can cause—skincare experts are also unanimous about the fact that wearing sunscreen prevents the kind of damage that leads to pigmentation, dehydration, and uneven texture.

Having said all that, though, I know that many people struggle to get on with SPF. Traditionally, a lot of facial sunscreens have been thick and pore-clogging (not appealing if you’re oily-skinned like me), and mineral formulas in particular can leave behind a chalky white residue, which just won’t fly with deeper skin tones. However, over the years I have tested hundreds of sun creams, SPF moisturisers and lightweight sunscreens, and I truly believe that there is now an abundance of brilliant sun protection options on the market that protect skin, feel incredible, and leave no hint of greasiness or whitecast.

The catch? A lot of my favourites come with a hefty price tag. In my experience, the best sun protection products cost more as you’re paying for the technology and product development that has created an advanced and wearable formulation. So when I heard fellow beauty editors raving about a certain SPF moisturiser that costs just £13, I was intrigued. Enter: ELF Skin Holy Hydration Face Cream with SPF 30.

My honest review of the E.L.F. Skin Holy Hydration! Face Cream SPF 30

First impressions

I know so many beauty journalists who rave about E.L.F Cosmetics when it comes to the best affordable beauty products, and nearly always at the top of the list will be their cult Holy Hydration Face Cream. I tried it for myself the first time a couple of years back and was hugely impressed by the formula—for a high-street brand, it delivered on ingredients, texture and hydration. Yet I wasn’t sure whether an SPF-infused version would be up my street. Why? Well, typically, I’m not big on SPF moisturisers as I prefer to use a face cream followed by a dedicated sunscreen to ensure I’ve got enough coverage and protection. However, if you do avoid using SPF, then I can see the value in these products, particularly during the autumn and winter months here in the UK when sunlight is not exactly in abundance.

Anyway, like the original formulation, the E.L.F. Skin Holy Hydration! Face Cream SPF 30 at first glance looks like quite a basic moisturiser. And I don’t say this in a bad way. A lot of skincare comes with huge claims, extensive ingredient lists, and new-fangled textures to entice consumers. This one looks and feels exactly what you’d expect from a face cream—it has a nice viscosity (not too thick and not too thin), blends in fairly easily (although I wouldn’t say it sinks in as effortlessly as some of my favourite moisturisers), and has a fresh slightly floral scent. Plus, I love how lightweight the pot is, which would make it a brilliant summer holiday option for packing in your case.

The formula

So, let’s get into the formula itself. In terms of sun protection, the E.L.F. Skin Holy Hydration! Face Cream SPF 30 contains a broad-spectrum SPF 30, which means it’s going to protect skin from both UVA and UVB rays—essential for me when I’m picking a sunscreen. And while I know that lots of people don’t wear less than SPF 50 on their face, I’ve always been happy to wear an SPF 30 for normal days here in the UK. Plus, all of the skincare experts that I speak to tend to agree that SPF 30 as a minimum is a good place to start.

For me, though, beyond the sun protection, it’s the skincare ingredients in this moisturiser that appeal. There’s hyaluronic acid to help skin retain moisture and stay hydrated all day, niacinamide to even skin tone and minimise the appearance of pores, and peptides to smooth and plump. E.L.F has taken some of the most versatile and beneficial skincare ingredients and put them all into one everyday formula, meaning that this moisturiser will work just as well for oily skin as it will for dry.

I will say, though, that if you're used to a gel moisturiser or a cream that's more lightweight, then at first this might take some getting used to. While it definitely isn't greasy or tacky once applied to the skin, it is a little thicker than some of my go-to formulations and does require some massaging in, much like a classic sun cream. However, once it's on my skin, I feel hydrated, soft and supple, and not in the slightest bit tacky.

The results

I have to say that since receiving this a few weeks back, I’ve been surprised at how frequently I have reached for the E.L.F. Skin Holy Hydration! Face Cream SPF 30. It’s become a morning staple for me, particularly while we’ve been enjoying some early signs of summer with some beautiful sunny days recently. I love how well it hydrates and plumps my skin, and the fact that I can layer my other sunscreens and base products on top without any pilling (something that happens more often than I’d like with SPF). And while I will continue to wear my usual sun protection on top of this one, on days that I’m just inside the house working or during the winter months, I’d personally be happy enough to just wear this—safe in the knowledge that my skin looks fresh, bright and healthy and is protected from UV rays at the same time. And for £13, who can argue with that?

It's been in formulation for two years and promises to do SPF in the Merit way, with a clever formula that makes application a treat.

It's a mineral SPF which gets a big thumbs up for sun protection. Mineral filters sit on the skin's surface and reflect them, shielding against both UVA (deeper, ageing) and UVB (surface, burning) rays. While mineral formulas often get a bad rap for being chalky, hard to blend, or incompatible with make-up, The Uniform aims to rewrite that narrative with a your-skin-but-better finish. I applied shade 20 of The Uniform as the final step in my skincare routine, just as I would with any everyday SPF. The texture stood out immediately: silky and not one bit sticky. That's thanks to a plant-derived emollient in the formula, which gives it a smooth glide without any tackiness. The consistency felt more like a velvety foundation than a tinted moisturiser.

It took a little longer to blend than a dewy skin tint, but I appreciated the breathing room as it didn't set too quickly, even though the formula is on the drier side. I won't lie, I expected to be impressed. But I wasn't expecting to be this impressed. It left behind a soft, semi-matte veil that struck the perfect balance: not flat, not shiny. I usually dust over setting powder to tone down unwanted shine and add polish, but after applying, I felt like this step had already been done for me.

Technically, to stay protected, you need to reapply SPF every two hours when you're in direct sun, sweating, or outdoors for extended periods. And let's be honest: most of us forget (or ignore) that fact once we've applied make-up on top.

The first thing that strikes you when you see the Bioré UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50 is its matching aqua blue packaging. It’s bright, cheerful and sunny. Cost-wise, this squeezy tube is £15.99 for 50ml, putting it in the same price range as the much-loved, purse-friendly Garnier sunscreens. With an oil-free and non-comedogenic formula, hyaluronic acid is called out by the brand for its hydrating benefits, while glycerin and vitamin E are also present here. And, more importantly, there’s protection against both UVB, with the SPF 50, and UVA, indicated by the PA++++ rating.

The texture is great; this formula is easy to dispense and rub into the skin. I find the name a bit of a misnomer; it’s not runny or watery like an essence, but more of a lightweight hydrating cream that sinks into the skin easily. But it’s super comfortable to wear and once it settles, makes a brilliant base for make-up, thanks to its hydrating-yet-non-greasy texture. As somebody with oily-combination skin (emphasis on the oily), this is key to avoiding exacerbating my skin’s natural “slip-and-slide” effect on make-up.

If your skin is prone to dehydration and you struggle with the greasy quality of facial sun creams, particularly when you apply your best foundation over the top, this is worth giving it a go. It’s easy to see why it’s so popular around the world, and it’s a skincare buy I wholeheartedly recommend.

The perfect summer base option? Absolutely. So when I got a chance to try the Mecca Cosmetica In A Good Light Illuminating Drops SPF30 in Australia before the UK launch, I already knew they were going to be a big hit.

The way you use these also depends on which one you choose. With four shades developed to flatter a broad range of skin tones, you can pick your ideal hue for all-over use as a primer or complexion perfecter, or equally as a bronzer or blusher.

'Sunlight' is the fairest shade of the four, which works well with pinker undertones. It could be used all over for fair complexions or as a highlighter on all skin tones. Similarly, 'Golden' can be used at the high points of the face to highlight for all skin tones.

A beauty editor's review

I've been using two shades of the Mecca Cosmetica SPF drops ('Sunlight' and 'Bronze') pretty religiously since first trying them around six weeks ago. While I love mixing the latter in with my daily skin tint for that perfect all-over glow, I tend to use the former just on the high points of my face to highlight and boost radiance. Together, these work well for my complexion to help me achieve my dewy skin texture of dreams, while of course, offering added SPF protection.

The texture of these is lovely; they're super lightweight and non-sticky, and absorb into skin beautifully. They also blend well, even with fingertips, meaning the options of how to use them are wide-ranging. There's a light scent, too, which reminds me of holidays and being by the beach, which can only be a great thing. I think in an already-saturated SPF market, these offer something new and different, making them a must-try for the spring/summer months.

The multi-tasking dry oil, which can be used on the face, body and hair, is an icon. The brand knows how to make a really good oil. So, I was pretty excited when I heard there was a new launch coming and it brought together two summer beauty essentials: an illuminating body oil with the protection of an SPF. Available in an SPF30 and SPF50, Nuxe’s Sun Oil Gold promises to make sun protection much more than just a practicality, but a luxurious part of your body care routine. As a die-hard body oil fan (even when it comes to SPF), I knew I had to put them to the test, and thankfully, the heatwave earlier this month gave me the perfect opportunity. Here’s my honest review…

What’s so good about Nuxe’s Sun Oil Gold SPF?

Bringing together an illuminating body oil with the protection of an SPF, Nuxe’s Sun Oil Golds offer the best of both worlds. Available in both SPF 30 and SPF 50 variations, they are made from a blend of hydrating oils which work to nourish and hydrate the skin. Alongside this, however, both factors also contain rice and rosemary extract, which work in combination to prevent premature skin ageing by protecting it from environmental aggressors and soothing and calming any irritation.

What sets Nuxe’s Sun Oil Gold apart, however, from both the original Sun Oil formula (another great SPF, in my opinion) and other sunscreen oils, is its incredible shimmery finish. Infused with pearly particles, Sun Oil Gold gives skin a soft bronze glow which shines (in a very good way) when it catches the light. This is an SPF oil, but oh-so-much better.

The other brilliant thing about these illuminating SPF body oils is that they smell like the original Huile Prodigieuse, which to me is summer in a bottle—a creamy white floral, with notes of tuberose, jasmine, and coconut.

A beauty editors honest review

When temperatures finally hit the mid-20s at the beginning of this month, I knew it was time to break out Nuxe’s Sun Oil Gold. I quickly took to slathering the shimmery oil (in SPF 30, in case you were wondering) on my arms and legs, and straight away I knew this was going to be my new favourite SPF.

Firstly, the texture feels incredibly nourishing. As someone who’s always favoured oil SPFs over traditional creams, I’ve tried my fair share over the years and, while some leave your skin feeling greasy and sticky, the best formulas feel incredibly luxe. Nuxe falls into the latter with a slightly thick texture, which soaks into the skin quickly, leaving no uncomfortable residue.

Now, onto the most exciting thing about this oil, the golden finish. You rarely come across an illuminating body oil that also has SPF, and so it was this that I was most excited about. Rather than a glittery finish, the golden tone in Nuxe's oil is incredibly delicate, melting into the skin to create a radiant sheen as opposed to a full-on sparkle. It’s a radiance that’s natural yet alluring and comes into its own when you step into sunlight.

While I loved the look of this oil on my sunny London balcony, I can’t even imagine how much better it will be when worn on my summer holidays for poolside cocktails or dinners by the beach. Add to that the most important point of all, that my skin is protected while wearing it, and I’m dubbing this my ultimate summer beauty essential.

By now, we all know about the importance of wearing a facial sunscreen every day, so I’ll skip the lecture and get down to the important bit. You see, while we are all aware of SPF’s necessity in our beauty routine, a recent study by online beauty platform Face the Future revealed that in 2025, 45% of us here in the UK still aren’t applying SPF on a daily basis. The reason? We want our SPF formula to feel silky smooth, hydrating on the skin and offer fuss-free, easy application with no white cast or greasy residue—something that may have been lacking in traditional formulas if the stats are anything to go by.

Thankfully, the beauty brands have taken notice, and there is a new wave of SPF formulas available which bring together the lightweight texture of a serum or gel moisturiser with the sun protection we need. Water-based sunscreens are packed with hydrating ingredients, like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, so they not only feel great to apply, but your skin reaps the benefits too. Considering Face the Future’s study also revealed 40% of us want a formula that feels lightweight/invisible on the skin and almost half of the UK want an SPF with hydrating benefits, this is great news for anyone who’s been skipping their sun protection up until now or still on the hunt for a formula they love.

How effective are water-based sunscreens?

Yet, with something as important as SPF, it’s important to consider how well these formulas compare to the creams we’ve come to know. To find out, I spoke to Dr Ifeoma Ekijeme, skin expert and founder of Adiona Medical Clinic, who revealed water-based formulas are just as effective as traditional creams. “Water-infused formulas are designed to deliver reliable protection while feeling lighter on the skin, without compromising on efficacy,” she told me. “The most noticeable difference is in texture. Water-based sunscreens tend to feel much lighter and more breathable on the skin. They also often incorporate additional hydrating ingredients, making them ideal for those looking for a more moisturising formula.”

“The key factor [when choosing any sun protection] is the SPF rating and the presence of broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays,” she continued. “For best results, apply generously to clean, dry skin. Make sure to cover all exposed areas, including the neck and ears, and allow the product to absorb fully.”

I think we all know by now the importance of wearing SPF. It’s the one product that dermatologists and skin experts are unanimous about recommending—thanks to its ability to protect skin from sun damage. This, in turn, prevents the appearance of things like pigmentation, fine lines and dehydration as we age.

However, while I never stop banging on about it being a non-negotiable part of my own skincare routine, I’m well aware that many people have had bad experiences with facial sunscreen. I feel you. As someone with acne-prone skin, I’ve used many a sun lotion that has exacerbated breakouts and increased oiliness, and it's not what you want when you’re trying to look after your skin health. So, you can take my sunscreen recommendations seriously.

I have tried hundreds, and always put new releases to the test as soon as I can. But this latest sunscreen from Kosas has quickly shot to my number one spot thanks to its ability to not only protect skin from the sun, but keep oiliness at bay and leave my skin looking so damn glowy. In fact, the Kosas DreamBeam Sunscreen SPF 30 is so good that I’ve taken to skipping the rest of my base make-up routine most mornings.

My honest review of the Kosas DreamBeam Sunscreen SPF 30

First impressions

Despite experts frequently recommending mineral sunscreens as one of the best options for acne-prone skin, I have to admit that I don’t tend to use them. Typically, I find that mineral formulations can be a little thicker, harder to blend, and often leave a slight white cast on the skin.

So when I saw that Kosas DreamBeam was a mineral formulation I didn’t think I’d get on with it. However, this is unlike any other mineral SPF that I’ve used. The texture is ultra-lightweight, beautifully blendable, and it doesn’t leave behind any white pigment on the skin—just a sheer and subtle glow. Even better, it’s non-comedogenic so it won’t clog pores, fragrance-free (ideal for sensitive skin), and silicone-free so it doesn’t pill beneath any products applied on top.

The formula

Kosas is known for its “clean” approach to beauty, which means that DreamBeam is formulated without mineral oil, parabens, sulphates and phthalates. Personally, I take 'clean beauty' claims with a pinch of salt. I feel like there’s a time and a place for certain kinds of ingredients, and I don’t think they should be demonised—but it’s good to know if that’s your jam.

What I’m more interested in, however, is what is inside the formula; and this is brimming with great stuff. First up, there’s hyaluronic acid to hydrate and allantoin to soothe (great if you’re prone to redness), but it’s also packed with peptides and ceramides—two ingredients that I am starting to seek out in my skincare now that I’m in my mid-30s. The result is a moisturising sunscreen that not only protects skin with a 21.7% mineral concentration of non-nano zinc, but also firms, plumps and smooths the surface of the skin. Genius.

The finish

There are two versions of the Kosas DreamBeam Sunscreen available—Sunlit, a soft golden bronze, and Original, a peachy-pink.

Sunlit would be ideal for deeper skin tones or those that love a sun-kissed complexion, but I’ve been wearing Original on a daily basis thanks to the fact that it neutralises discolouration on my skin and provides a natural-looking glow. In fact, it’s so good at making my skin look brighter, fresher and more even that I haven’t felt the need to layer on my usual skin tints and tinted moisturisers on top.

Most mornings I have around five minutes to do my skincare and get my make-up on before heading out on the school run, and thanks to this I can trust that I’m protected from the sun’s rays while still looking and feeling a whole lot more polished. Of course, it doesn’t promise coverage so my natural skin texture and tone still shine through, but it’s perfect for a low-maintenance day. And if I do decide to apply make-up on top? It acts as the perfect smoothing filter and radiant base for anything that I layer on afterwards. Dreamy indeed.

Like so many beauty enthusiasts, I fell hook, line and sinker for Augustinus Bader when it first launched in 2019. I've been a beauty editor for a long time, and over the years I have tried countless facial sunscreens and SPF moisturisers. And in all honesty, there are very few that I've disliked. Some haven't quite suited my needs, whilst others haven't sat well under my make-up, but all in all I've been very pleased with my sun protection collection. I didn't feel like I was missing anything special...

That was until I tried the new AB SPF. I can't really put my finger on why I think it's so fantastic. I think it has something to do with the fact that I haven't used a sunscreen in recent memory, quite so nourishing. My dry skin that's prone to dehydration is very happy when I use it. It also might be that my skin has felt much softer since I've started trialling it six weeks ago. Perhaps it's also because my recent flare-up of guttate psoriasis across my forehead has calmed (something that I am holding the brand's skin-repairing amino acid complex responsible for). It could also be because once applied, it leaves a veil of radiance on my skin, which, as I'm partial to an illuminating primer, I love.

Come to think of it, perhaps I can put my finger on why I love it so.

One of my points of pride when it comes to my skincare routine is that I never leave the house without SPF. Rain, shine, or British weather, I will undoubtedly be wearing SPF50+. But this doesn't always mean it's always an enjoyable process; I need a product that absorbs quickly, doesn't disrupt make-up application, or leave a dreaded white cast, oh and has a host of skincare benefits to boot. Essentially, for me, the best SPFs have to be invisible and weightless once applied.

In my years as a beauty editor, I have stumbled across a few formulas that can do this, but Augustinus Bader's The Sunscreen SPF 50 takes the cake. Thick and creamy, this pale yellow cream feels more akin to an evening moisturiser, before absorbing into basically nothing. I don't even give it a passing thought once I've applied it—and that's the highest praise I could give any sunscreen. My make-up applies flawlessly on top, and there's no pilling or white cast to speak of.

As is typical of Augustinus Bader, the packaging is luxe and weighty. Though if you're planning on travelling, it's worth noting that the length of the tube might take up a considerable amount of your liquid allowance.

At £105 for 30ml, it's definitely pricey, but I think it's worth it for the standout formula and texture, not to mention the skincare benefits. There are antioxidant-rich ingredients to defend against oxidative stress and delayed sun damage, as well as vitamins E, A, omega-3 3 and omega-6 for added photoprotection. Plus, sunscreen is the most important step in any good skincare routine. In any case, it is my new holy grail facial SPF, and I won't be without it this summer.

As a black woman, finding a sunscreen that doesn't leave me with a white cast can be an arduous task. Now, I don't mean to sound dramatic, but I think I've finally found "the one" and I won't be letting it go. I was shocked to see how easily this glided across my face and leaving my skin glowing. The formula is super lightweight and absorbs into the skin almost immediately, leaving your skin plump and hydrated.

I have oily/combination skin, so I was intrigued to see whether this would make me look super shiny, but it delivered on hydration while giving me a glow.

My greatest skin nemesis is hyperpigmentation, something that most people with dark skin tones suffer with, but this not only works to give you sun protection but also helps to reduce pigmentation, wrinkles and redness. I'm sold.

It’s probably safe to say that most of us know the importance of wearing sun cream by now. Not only does wearing it reduce the risk of skin cancer, but skipping SPF and exposing your skin to UVA and UVB rays also contributes hugely to how quickly your skin ages. Sun damage can cause visible changes like hyperpigmentation and fine lines, but it can also speed up the loss of elasticity and plumpness in our skin. Essentially, if you want skin that’s healthy inside and on the surface then wearing SPF moisturiser or a daily suncreen is a non-negotiable.

However, as someone with oily skin that’s prone to breakouts (which means that I follow a skincare routine aimed at combating blemishes), I can understand the reluctance that some people might have to slathering an additional product onto your face. But while years ago sun creams were typically thick, cloying, heavy formulas, these days there are so many brilliant SPFs on the market for every skin type. Gone are the thick, chalky sunblocks that I remember my mum trying to convince me to apply to my face, and instead there’s a new wave of lightweight, invisible facial sunscreens—many of which have been specially formulated with oily skin types in mind.

I caught up with Dr. Sonia Khorana, a GP and cosmetic doctor with a special interest in dermatology, to understand what to look out for when choosing a sun cream for oily skin and to pick her brains on the best SPFs that she recommends to keep oil levels in check.

Does wearing SPF cause breakouts for people with oily skin?

Having tried a lot of SPFs over the years, with some of them undeniably exacerbating my blemishes, I wanted to understand whether sun cream really can impact oily skin.

“Sunscreen use may occasionally cause breakouts for individuals who have oily or acne-prone skin, but this is because they may contain ingredients that can potentially clog pores and lead to breakouts in susceptible individuals,” explains Dr. Khorana. “It is important to remember that not all sunscreens cause breakouts, and there are several non-comedogenic (non-pore-clogging) options available, including sunscreens with mineral-based filters like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.”

And don’t forget to cleanse your skin thoroughly at the end of the day with a cleanser for oily skin to remove all traces of SPF from your face.in

What should oily skin types look for when choosing the best SPF?

If you’re looking for a sun cream in a rush then there are two key phrases to look for when choosing the best SPF for oily skin—“non-comedogenic” or “oil-free”. This means that the product has either been designed specifically not to clog pores, or it will be totally free from oils and will therefore reduce the chances of exacerbating your existing oil levels.

Dr. Khorana also advises seeking out “lightweight textures or gel-based formulas” as well as a whole host of non-comedogenic ingredients that work well within SPF formulations. “Things like squalane, glycerin, niacinamide, azelaic acid and hyaluronic acid,” Dr. Khorana suggests.

The 7 best SPFs for oily skin

1. Medik8 Advanced Day Ultimate Protect SPF 50+

All too often products for oily skin are catered towards teens or people in their early 20s, but this non-comedogenic offering from Medik8 is brilliant if you’re older but still dealing with breakouts. Enriched with hyaluronic acid and squalane, it’s a deeply moisturising sunscreen that provides buckets of hydration without any risk of clogging pores. Alongside the advanced sun protection, it takes an all-round approach to shielding skin from aggressors with blueberry seed oil and carnosine working to protect skin from pollution and blue and infrared lights.

2. Bondi Sands Hydra UV Protect SPF50 Face Lotion

You won’t even know you’re wearing sunscreen thanks to how incredibly lightweight this SPF is. Perfect for oily skin thanks to the way it melts seamlessly into skin without leaving behind any hint of residue, I actually think that most skin types would get on well with this versatile formulation. Infused with algae extract, it’s hydrating but otherwise fuss-free and totally imperceptible on the skin. The only thing that could improve it for me is a bigger bottle as it’s such a joy to slather it on.

3. Supergoop! Mineral Mattescreen SPF30

Despite having oily skin, I am a big fan of the cult Supergoop! Glowscreen SPF30 which creates incredibly dewy, radiant skin. However, during the height of summer that level of glow means I look like I’ve been dipped in a vat of oil by lunchtime, so this mattifying formulation becomes my go-to. The brand describes it as a ‘primer-meets-sunscreen’ thanks to the way this zinc-infused formula smooths over skin and reduces the appearance of pores. Think of it like a filter in SPF form. Skin is left velvety-smooth and matte without looking dull or chalky. However, I’d love to see it in an SPF 50 version too as I’d really only wear this in the UK and nowhere with a sunnier climate.

4. Kiehl's Ultra Light Daily UV Defense Mineral Sunscreen

If you’re in the midst of a breakout, find that certain ingredients can trigger spots, or have skin that’s feeling quite sensitised then this SPF would make a brilliant choice. It’s a mineral-based, non-comedogenic formulation that has been created to protect irritable skin without exacerbating any existing issues. The gel texture is so lightweight that it melts into the skin. However, it does have a light tint to it which is meant to help enhance your natural skin tone which I don’t feel is all that necessary and may put some people off the product.

5. Hello Sunday The Mineral One SPF 50

While there’s no denying that mineral sunscreens make a great option for oily skin, as someone that still likes their skin to look bright and glowy the options tend to be focused more on mattifying the skin. That was until I discovered this innovative serum SPF from Hello Sunday. These drops are brimming with hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and kukui oil for lightweight hydration, antioxidant protection and to provide that subtle radiance. It contains zinc oxide to provide that SPF 50 protection, which means the serum is quite white when it first applies but it blends out really well into skin without leaving any visible residue.

6. Eucerin Sun Face Oil Control Sun Gel-Cream Dry Touch SPF50+

Whenever I ask skin experts and dermatologists for SPF recommendations, Eucerin is a brand that always emerges at the top of the list. Dr. Khorana recommended this one thanks to the fact that it was developed specially for oily skin and anyone that is prone to breakouts. It has a lightweight gel texture that is perfect if you hate the feeling of traditional sun cream on your skin and it dries down to an invisible, matte finish that feels as if there is nothing on the skin. Plus, it contains sebum-regulating technology and absorbing micro-particles so your skin will remain shine-free for as long as you’re wearing it—perfect in really hot weather when you might be feeling slightly sweaty.

7. Murad Multi-Vitamin Clear Coat Broad Spectrum SPF 50

Oily skin aside, this is one of the best SPFs that I’ve ever tried—but it has the added bonus of boasting a beautiful velvety-matte finish that oily skin types will love. Enriched with a whole host of vitamins (C, D, E and F in case you’re interested in the specifics) this sunscreen really has skin health at its core. Formulated to nourish and protect the skin from its environment, it also contains SPF 50 protection alongside clary sage and chia seed to minimise signs of ageing like loss of firmness, uneven skin tone and lack of radiance. Combined with the totally invisible finish on the skin, I’d say that this is a brilliant SPF for anyone wanting fresh, healthy-looking, protected skin.

When you have sensitive skin, it can feel like a gamble trying any new skincare products. I can relate. For years, my skin sensitivity and rosacea meant I avoided certain products (like vitamin C serums and facial sunscreens daily) to avoid making my skin unhappy and prevent a flare-up. However, sunscreen is the one product worth the effort of finding one that you and your skin likes. Not only does it help protect against skin cancer, but for we sensitive folk, it also helps reduce flare-ups and irritation caused by the sun's rays.

What to look for in an sunscreen for sensitive skin

When you have sensitive skin, a lot of the conversation is based on pared-back skincare; essentially taking out all of the unnecessaries and going back to basics.

If there's one product to never remove from your routine it's sunscreen. I get it though, SPF can be irritating and it feels like an easy one to remove from your routine for the sake of keeping your skin happy. But it's one of the most important products out there for those with sensitive skin. Why? "Sensitive skin is more prone to irritation and adverse reactions, especially when exposed to the sun's harmful rays," says Amy Peterson, medical aesthetician and founder of Skincare by Amy Peterson medspa. And, of course, it helps to protect our skin and minimise the risk of skin cancer.

The great news is that there are actually tons of sunscreens out there that aren't irritating for sensitive skin types, but there are a few things to consider. When starting out on your journey, if you're not sure on what your skin does and doesn't like, Amy suggests opting for products labelled as "hypoallergenic" and "fragrance-free" to minimise the risk of irritation. 

If your skin is really unhappy, Amy advises trying a sunscreen with physical blockers, which contain ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. "These ingredients are less likely to cause skin irritation compared to chemical sunscreens," she says. This isn't a given though—some chemical sunscreens are great for sensitive skin but physical formulas are a great place to start. You should also always look for a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, which you'll see described as 'broad-spectrum'.

Amy recommends doing a patch test before using a new sunscreen. "[This] ensures it doesn't trigger allergic reactions or exacerbate existing skin conditions," she explains. You might want to visit in store first to test a bunch of formulas to see what you like and what works before committing to a full size.

Best sunscreen for sensitive skin, according to a beauty editor

1. Dermatica Photodamage Defence Sunscreen SPF50

Despite Dermatica's USP being the bespoke prescription skincare you get via their online dermatology platform, the brand has nailed its line of no-nonsense skincare basics, including the Photodamage Defence Sunscreen SPF50. It's a fantastic, budget-friendly sunscreen that protects the skin well without irritating it. It works really well under make-up, giving skin a dewy but not shiny finish. 

2. La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+ 

This is the sunscreen I recommend to literally everyone and I've never had someone tell me that they didn't get on with it. It was made with sensitive skin in mind so ticks all of the non-irritating boxes. It's an incredibly lightweight fluid formula, meaning it doesn't leave an annoying film or give skin an ultra-shiny finish. It comes in a small, handy bottle that makes it very easy to travel with or carry in your handbag for top-ups. 

3. Altruist Face Fluid SPF50

Altruist is my favourite sunscreen brand because its cheap and the formulas are great—simple as that. This Face Fluid is exactly as it sounds, a lightweight cream formula that absorbs into the skin well without it feeling heavy or greasy. The formula recently went through a change, making it slightly thicker than it used to be, but I think it's still a great, affordable option. It rubs into skin nicely, works well with make-up and has never made my skin angry or flared it up. 

4. Beauty Pie Super Healthy Skin Featherlight SPF50 Sunscreen

Beauty Pie is yet to let me down, and this sunscreen is in my basket at all times. I've repurchased this lots and, considering I get a bunch of sunscreen for free, this is saying something. While I do think this is sensitive-skin friendly on the whole, it does have the potential to sting eyes, though I don't think this is common. This is something to bear in mind when you want full protection going over your eyelids etc. 

5. CeraVe Facial Moisturising Lotion SPF30

CeraVe is always a trusty option when it comes to skincare and this SPF30 moisturiser is no different. It's lightweight and doesn't feel like a sunscreen in the slightest (we're talking no thick, white chalky texture) making it a favourite among many. However, because it is a moisturiser, you have to make sure you're using enough (people tend to use slightly less when it's a moisturiser formula) so remember to use a full two finger lengths for your face and neck! 

6. Lucy Bee SPF 50

This is such a lovely sunscreen that I don't often see people talking about. The formula contains hyaluronic acid to give that added boost of moisture to the skin. (To get its full benefits, apply on dampened skin, then follow with your moisturiser.) It's very lightweight (so make sure you use enough to get adequate protection), has broad-spectrum protection and absorbs well if you're using make-up after it.

A hugely popular base product, IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream is truly an icon of the make-up world. 

Created by a co-founder who herself has rosacea, and with the intel of plastic surgeons and dermatologists, its coverage is brilliant. Not only is it renowned for being one of the best CC creams, it also happens to be one of my personal favourite bases.

As a beauty editor, I'm forever testing the newest foundation launches and comparing them against old favourites. But this takes pride of place in my everyday make-up bag. Here's what you need to know about it.

IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream SPF 50+

Skincare-make-up hybrid products have been something of a trend over the last couple of years, but IT Cosmetics’ CC has been doing this for years (10 years, to be precise). The ingredients list features skin-loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and niacinamide for comfortable and skin-beneficial wear.

There’s also an SPF of 50, a nice added bonus that’ll support your SPF underneath, though you should of course be applying one of the best facial sunscreens separately as part of your skincare routine beforehand.

While the name CC cream might suggest a lightweight colour-correcting base, it's closer to one of the best foundations in terms of consistency and coverage, the latter of which full and lasts well though the day. In my opinion, you don't need as much as a full pump for everyday wear because it’s so pigmented. A note on the shade range; I personally can only speak firsthand about the lighter shade options, but in my experience, the shades do come up darker than you might expect.

At £36.50, it is a bit of an investment, but as a little stretches a long way your purchase should last you ages. (You could get the travel size if you're new to it.) If you've been considering trying it, I can seriously recommend it.

If you’re on TikTok, or really any social media platform that houses beauty content, then I’m pretty confident that e.l.f. Cosmetics (AKA eyes, lips, face) is on your radar. So many of this brand's products have achieved viral sensation status—and, as it's one of my favourite make-up brands, I can't say I'm surprised. 

But not only do I think the products are great (they regularly feature in my everyday make-up bag), excluding gift sets and bundles, everything from eyeshadow through to foundation costs £15 or less. We love to see it.

1. e.l.f. Wow Brow Gel 

This brow gel is pure brilliance. It adds just the right amount of volume and shapes brows brilliantly with hold that lasts through the day. There is room for improvement in the shade range, as there are currently just four options on offer, but it’s such an affordable make-up staple that I often go back to. 

2. e.l.f. Luminous Putty Blush

I love blusher and I’m a convert to liquid and cream formulas, so Luminous Putty Blush is right up my street. It's easy to apply and the shades are great; tapping a tiny bit of this on instantly makes me look healthier and more awake. I feel like it’ll take months to make a proper dent in it. 

3. e.l.f. CC Camo Cream

One of those skincare-make-up hybrids, a key trend for the past couple of years, this easy-to-blend formula packs great full coverage alongside peptides and niacinamide. The SPF 30 is a nice bonus, but you do need to apply a separate facial sunscreen first as part of your skincare routine for the best protection. 

4. e.l.f. No Budge Shadow Stick

As somebody who is pretty low maintenance with their everyday make-up routine, eyeshadow sticks are a particular favourite of mine (think minimal effort, maximum impact). No Budge Shadow Sticks do exactly what they say on the tin; there’s a bit of smudging time and then the formula dries down and stays put. 

5. e.l.f. Stay All Night Micro Fine Setting Mist

I am a big fan of setting spray because it’s so lightweight, something that e.l.f.’s Stay All Night spray really lives up to—this dispenses the finest of mists that won’t disturb your make-up. I can’t say I’ve put it to the test all night in recent years, but I am a big fan.

6. e.l.f. Ultra Precise Eyebrow Pencil

I firmly believe that e.l.f. Makes some of the best brow products, not just on the high street but full stop. Again, there could definitely be more shades to choose from, but otherwise this brow pencil ticks all the boxes—it’s precise, it’s natural-looking and there’s a built-in spoolie, too.

7. e.l.f. 16HR Camo Concealer

I’ve previously written that this is one of the best affordable concealers on the market, and I wholeheartedly stand by that. You only need the tiniest dot to cover any blemishes, so the tube can last for ages, but despite this super full coverage it stretches pretty well without caking. 

8. e.l.f. Power Grip Primer

One of the brand’s viral TikTok buys is the Power Grip Primer, a surprisingly lightweight gel formula that hydrates and grips for longer-lasting make-up. I would say that it does leave a very, very slight sticky feeling in its wake, but it’s not that noticeable and feels pretty comfortable on the skin. 

9. e.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Filter

Creating that 'lit from within' look, Halo Glow can be worn on its own, under your best foundation, a bit like an illuminating primer, or over the top like a highlighter. What's great about it is that it's not super sparkly, just a pure glow that makes your skin look mega radiant. 

10. e.l.f. Bite Size Eyeshadow Palette

If you find that you tend to gravitate towards two or three shades, max, in an eyeshadow palette, then a smaller quad might be a better investment for you. Come rain or shine, I’ve spoken to enough dermatologists to understand the importance of wearing the best facial sunscreen every day. In fact it is, without exception, the number one product that skin experts tell me we should all be using to keep our skin healthy and looking its best long-term. But while I know that it’s essential, and I’m pretty religious about wearing SPF everyday, some formulations can look a little flat on the skin. 

Thankfully, though, that’s all changing thanks to an influx of luminous sunscreens that truly make wearing SPF feel like a joy. These new-gen sunscreens are lightweight, sheeny and so glow-boosting that they act like skincare-makeup hybrids—and often mean that I can skip my beloved tinted moisturiser. The following SPFs are so good, they give even the best highlighters a run for their money. 

I’ve rounded up the very best glowy sunscreens that I’ll have on rotation all year round.

1. Supergoop! Glowscreen SPF 30

US-brand Supergoop have been leading the way in sunscreen innovation for years and their glow-infused sunscreen is something of a cult product globally. It’s definitely pricier than some of the other alternatives on the market, but I have to say it’s worth the money—and the hype. Infused with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, it smooths and hydrates skin while delivering that essential UVA and UVB protection. But most importantly it has the most beautiful, radiant finish that means I often skip most of my makeup entirely when I’m wearing this. Now that we’re coming into autumn, it has become my daily sunscreen of choice thanks to the way it effortlessly brightens my complexion. 

2. E.L.F. Cosmetics Skin Suntouchable! Whoa Glow SPF 30

This is truly a sunscreen-makeup hybrid product—a peach-tinted cream that provides protection from the sun’s rays alongside a naturally radiant glow. The brand refers to it as sun protection and a makeup primer in one, and while it is brightening it definitely has a level of grip that makes it perfect for layering other products on top. I’d say it’s ideal if your skin is on the oilier side but you still want to get in on the glowy sunscreen action. Plus, it contains skin-friendly ingredients like aloe, hyaluronic acid and squalane to keep your skin looking dewy and fresh all day. 

3. Naked Sundays SPF 50+ Hydrating Glow Mist

In the spirit of sunscreen innovation, I’m obsessed with the latest wave of SPF sprays that make reapplying sunscreen easy. This one from Australian brand Naked Sundays is perfect for topping up your sun protection while you’re out and about—just spray it liberally over your face to refresh skin and boost luminosity, and keep your makeup in tact for longer. This is hands down one of the best SPFs to apply over make-up. It contains watermelon extract and kakadu plum, which is naturally rich in vitamin C, and leaves skin impressively juicy-looking. However, it’s important to note that this is a top-up product and you should always apply your sunscreen as usual at the start of the day to ensure adequate protection from the sun. If you're resistant to add another step to your exisiting routine, how about swapping our your usual day cream for one of the best spf moisturisers?

4. La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Aquagel SPF 30 

This is one of my favourite year-round sunscreens and probably one of the skincare products that I recommend most. Enriched with vitamin B5 and hyaluronic acid, it’s like a big drink of water for parched complexions. It has a gel-like texture that sinks in fast, without leaving behind any sticky residue, and it always amazes me at how cushiony, plump and dewy my skin looks once I’ve applied this. There is no tint or pigment to this product, it provides brightness and glow in a natural, good skin way—and it’s truly undetectable on the skin. Genius.

5. Sun Bum Original Glow Lotion SPF 30+

A brilliant everyday sunscreen, this tinted SPF 30 from Sunscreen has the added benefit of being water-resistant for up to 80 minutes, making it ideal to take on holiday where you might be dipping in and out of the pool. It goes without saying that it has good UVA and UVB protection, but it also contains skin-brightening kadaku plum and has a tinted formulation that imparts plenty of glow onto skin. It’s really hydrating and great for days that you want to just put one product on your face and be done. 

6. Beauty Pie Super Healthy Skin Sheer Tinted Oil-Free SPF 20

A lot of glowy sunscreens are infused with a tint, and while the best ones will dissipate into skin leaving only a sheen behind, Beauty Pie’s offering has eight tones available so you can find one that really matches your complexion. While it is only SPF 20—and therefore I’d only wear this during the autumn and winter months. It has a beautiful soft-focus glow that really smooths over skin and diffuses pores and any fine lines. It’s naturally luminous, without being obviously dewy, and great for all skin types. 

Finally, after what feels like an eternity of winter, the sun has burst through the dreary clouds and summer is in full swing at last. But no matter what the weather is saying, you should be wearing sun protection come rain or shine. There's no better way of protecting your skin from harmful rays then that than using the best SPF moisturiser on a daily basis within your skincare routine.

As well as the well-known risks of skin cancer, the sun is also one of the biggest contributing factors to skin ageing thanks to UVA and UVB rays. Think UVB = burning and UVA = ageing. Because UVA rays have a longer wavelength they can penetrate the skin further causing DNA damage. Both UVA and UVB rays leads to sun damage, which in turn can cause hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, and a loss of elastin.

So, if we want healthy and youthful-looking skin, then we really must protect it from the sun. Every. Single. Day. (Yes, even in autumn and winter too.)

SPF moisturiser vs facial sunscreen: what's the difference?

First things first, let's address a common confusion: the difference between SPF moisturisers and a separate facial sunscreen.

In short, an SPF moisturiser is great for a very basic level of defence against sun-related damage. Protecting against the sun isn't its only function, as it's also doing the job of moisturising, too. So you'll be able to find one that protects you from the sun, whilst also catering to your other skin needs. It's like finding one of the best moisturisers for dry skin and then discovering it has a high SPF. Think soothing dryness, fighting discolouration, in the same vein as a brilliant hyperpigmentation treatment, and diffusing the appearance of wrinkles. If you're feeling a little lazy, travelling and trying to keep products to a minimum or just one of those people who fails to remember to apply your SPF, then these are a good option.

A facial sunscreen, on the other hand, only has one job: protect the skin on your face from the sun's rays without worrying about whether it's too moisturiser. Having said that, many sunscreen formulas now are so elegant, it's difficult to know the difference.

If you're on holiday or it's a particularly sunny day at home and you've decided to sunbathe, then it's time to get the best sun cream out.

"Many people believe that having an SPF in their moisturiser will suffice," says consultant dermatologist Dr Justine Kluk. "But, according to the British Association of Dermatologists, moisturiser with an SPF will only help protect you against small amounts of UV exposure, for example, walking to the car."

What these moisturisers won’t do is provide the same degree of sun protection as the best facial sunscreens, especially for longer periods of UV exposure. It's true that SPF in a moisturiser is tested the same way as SPF in sunscreen, so technically speaking, an SPF 30 moisturiser formula will offer the same level of protection as a facial sun cream with an SPF of 30. However, it all comes down to the application.

"To achieve the SPF on the label, you would have to apply at least half a teaspoon to the face, which people rarely do," says Kluk. Think about the way that you apply your usual moisturiser; you don't slather on a thick layer that thoroughly covers your face and neck in the same way you would do sun cream before heading to the beach.

"What’s more, SPF moisturisers are less likely to be rub-resistant and water-resistant. For these reasons, they won’t offer the same level of protection as the best sun creams," the doctor adds.

It's also worth noting that moisturisers containing an SPF don’t always contain protection against UVA rays, either. "As a result, they will not protect against UV ageing in the same way as a broad-spectrum sunscreen would," stresses Kluk.

Another essential suncare step is reapplication. So once you have applied either your moisturiser with an SPF or a facial sunscreen, the British Skin Foundation recommends that you top up every two hours. That's tricky if you've got a full face of make-up, which is where the best spf to apply over make-up comes in.

However, having an SPF in your daily moisturiser is never a bad idea. Because on those days when you're working from home or it's cloudy out, that added bit of daily defence is needed.

This one offers all of the same moisture-boosting benefits but with the added benefit of SPF 25 protection. And, even better, despite looking opaque, this cream has been formulated specifically to blend in totally sheer so it works just as well for deep skin tones as it does for light ones.

"Whether your skin is oily, dry or dehydrated, this lightweight cream contains just the right balance of barrier-protecting ingredients (like aloe vera and a hyaluronic acid complex) to keep skin soft, supple and nourished without weighing it down. I am always wary about trying new moisturisers as so many in the past have broken me out, but as someone with acne-prone skin I can't rate this Clinique moisturiser enough. Our Beauty Editors always make sure that they spend time with the products that they write about. When it comes to SPF moisturisers, these were tested on their ingredient list, texture, absorbability and white-cast. We also ensured that each product was tested for a minimum of a month and compared to other moisturisers in this guide.

It's no secret that you have to take extra care of your skin during summer. As the weather starts to get warmer, we are constantly reaching for the best sun cream and the best facial sunscreens to keep ourselves protected.

However, what about your hair? Although it's not talked about as much, the sun can also have a damaging effect on both your hair and scalp. 

According to celebrity hairstylist Sam McKnight, "the sun's harmful rays can cause a range of issues for your hair and scalp, including colour fading, split ends, and breakage. It can end up leaving your hair looking and feeling dry and dull."

But not to fear, as there are lots of things you can do to help stop this from happening. Curious? We thought so.

We spoke to the experts to find out exactly how to care for your hair in summer, and what products you need to keep your hair looking as healthy as possible.

1. Use a UV protecting mist

In an ideal world, we would all keep our hair out of the sun, however, we know that isn't always possible. "The next easy thing is to use a UV protecting mist," says McKnight. "Whether you summer in the city or at the beach, sun and humidity protection is key. I recommend using my Sundaze Sea Spray, a UV protecting mist that gives you a sea kissed texture like the ultimate Ibizan cool girl."

2. Try a pre-wash scalp oil

"This is so important all year round, but especially in summer when you're spending more time outside," says Jonathan Van Ness, hairstylist and founder of JVN Hair. "Our hair goes through so much more in summer, and a pre-wash scalp oil can help to support hair growth, and help to decongest and repair. I advise letting it sit for 15 minutes and then washing it out in the shower. Trust me, you will have less breakage, your hair will look shiny, it won't fade as fast and it will hold its shape for longer."

3. Wear your hair up at night

Another thing that Jonathan Van Ness recommends to do in summer is to wear your hair up at night. "By wearing your hair up when you sleep, you are keeping the ends of your hair away from your body heat. When you think about it, if you wear your hair down, your ends will get stuck between your shoulders and the bed. Not only will this expose your hair to low grade heat, but by tossing and turning throughout the night you will be creating a lot of friction on your hair."

Instead, Jonathan advises to wear your hair up on top of your head, and use a silk pillowcase as it doesn't conduct as much heat. You can check out our roundup of the best silk pillowcases here. 

4. Invest in an intensive treatment for your hair

This might seem like an obvious one, but it's more important than ever in summer to invest in an intensive treatment for your hair. "Look for one that repairs, deeply nourishes and strengthens, and that's easy to incorporate into your routine," says McKnight. "This is because the sun can damage and dehydrate hair, so regular treatments will help to keep it in tip top condition."

5. Condition before you go to the pool

If you are in and out of the pool a lot over summer, then a conditioning mist is key to help protect your hair. "Wet your hair down and put it all over your hair before you jump in the water," says Van Ness. "Your hair is a lot like a sponge, and it won't take in as much of that pool water with conditioner in the hair. This is particularly important if you have colour treated hair, as your hair is way more porous."

6. Embrace natural texture

And finally, the last tip is to embrace your natural hair texture. "We don't have as much time in the summer to be styling our hair, so I'm all about embracing natural texture," says Van Ness. "Use something such as our Complete Air Dry Cream which is great for people with curly hair, coily hair, and wavy hair. If your hair is straight it's also amazing, but make sure to use a little bit less product. All you have to do is apply on wet hair and style as desired. It will give you a beautiful texture and enhance curls." 

As a beauty editor, there is one question that I am repeatedly asked at this time of year: Does fake tan stop you from getting a real tan? And while I am here to act as the voice of beauty reason and tell you lounging in the sun for hours on end isn't wise for your skin health, I also know some of you are going to ignore me—so let me answer the question for you.

Whatever fake tan formula you've opted for (whether it be a tanning water, a gradual tanner or a facial tan), it's important to know that, when it comes to IRL tanning, it's business as usual.

Does fake tan stop a real tan?

In short, no. Not only does fake tan not prevent you from getting a natural tan from the sun, it's worth knowing it doesn't protect you from the sun either. "Where most fake tans do not have an SPF in them, your real tan will naturally build up underneath," says Michaella Bolder, professional tanner at St Tropez. That means that yes, you can fake tan before you go on holiday and rest easy knowing it's not going to impact how your skin catches the sun. "If you are looking to fake tan before your holiday, it is advised to do it the night before to ensure it lasts the length of time you are away, so it gradually fades away while my sun tan builds up underneath, switching places at an unnoticed point mid-holiday," she adds.

Do you still have to wear SPF in you have applied fake tan?

Yes, yes, YES. Fake tan doesn't typically provide any sun protection. "With fake tan, it's important to remember that a spray tan/fake tan offers no protection from the sun. SPF is more important than self tan," says Michaella. Remember, the safest thing to do is not attempt to tan in the sun at all—steer clear of sun rays where possible and always wear an SPF30 as a minimum. 

Will applying SPF fade my fake tan?

In theory, applying SPF over your fake tan shouldn't cause it to fade any quicker than it usually would. However, there are some caveats to this. "Oil-based SPFs will encourage a fake tan to fade quicker than water-based ones, so look into a cream-based SPF if you wish for your tan to survive the holiday journey," says Michaella.

By now, we all know how important wearing sunscreen is (yes, even if your skin is acne-prone). It protects us from UVA and UVB rays, and thus, both cancer and skin concerns caused by sun damage, which can occur even on cloudy days. However, SPF (sun protection factor) only actually refers to UVB light, so it’s important to look for a product that has both UVA and UVB protection, which is listed on products as 'broad-spectrum'.  

Aside from choosing a product that has enough protection and is one you like using (arguably the most important factor!), the answer to whether or not your sunscreen is doing its job correctly is actually mostly down to how you apply it. Sadly, sloppy application isn’t going to cut it when it comes to sun protection. That's why we called in the help of top experts in the industry to break down exactly how to apply – and reapply – facial sunscreen and body sun cream. 

How much sunscreen should I use? 

The first step is figuring how much sunscreen you need—and we’re going to take a bet that it’s more than you think. For the face and neck, experts agree the easiest way to remember it is the two finger lengths rule. “Run SPF along the length of your index and middle finger, which is the amount you need to be protected well. Though there’s no reason not to apply extra if you feel like you need it,” says Dr Ash Soni, plastic surgeon and owner of The Soni Clinic.

For the body, a shot glass is approximately the amount you need. If you’re using a spray formula, do about 4 passes on each section of your body before rubbing in. 

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but SPF in foundation isn’t enough. “It’s so low in quality and quantity, it does nothing,” says Dr Nestor Demosthenous, aesthetics practitioner and owner of Dr Nestor’s Medical and Cosmetic Centre. So it’s always best to apply a separate sunscreen before your make-up, rather than relying on the low factor in your foundation formula. In a regular sunscreen, the experts we spoke to said SPF30 and above is adequate—nothing lower. 

Some firm favourites from the experts include, La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios UVMUNE 400 Hydrating Cream SPF 50, Heliocare (there are a bunch of different formulas to suit specific skin type needs) and Altruist. 

When should I apply SPF?

It’s important to apply your sunscreen before you step outside to make sure you’re covered. The NHS recommends about 30 minutes before you head outdoors. You also shouldn’t rely on just sunscreen for sun safety. Keeping in the shade, avoiding peak hours of strong sunlight and using UV-protective clothing helps, too. 

Should I reapply my SPF?

Reapplication is crucial when it comes to keeping safe in the sun all day. Luckily, there are a few different ways to do this; even some that won’t disrupt your make-up. 

Reapplication is important because “UVB only lasts for 1-3 hours, so we need to reapply,” says Dr Nestor. If you don’t wear make-up, you can reapply your chosen base sunscreen with ease. However, if you do wear make-up, there are formulas to help cause as little disruption. Opt for a gel formula that sits on top of the skin nicely without the need for excessive blending. You can even use something like a blending sponge to work it in lightly—just make sure you’re using enough if you try this. 

You can use a spray formula, designed specifically for the face. We like the Bondi Sands SPF 50+ Fragrance Free Face Mist and La Roche-Posay Anthelios Sun Protection Face Mist. Just think of them as a regular setting spray but with added benefits! We also really like stick formulas that are excellent for targeted protection. Our favourites include Hello Sunday Invisible Sun Stick and Supergoop! Glow Stick SPF 50. 

Finally, there are also mineral-based powders, which are excellent at providing a layer of protection or to pop over the top of make-up. Dr Soni recommends the Skinbetter Science Tone Smart SPF 50 Compact (it’s important to note that despite it being “tone smart”, it won’t work for all skin tones) and the Colourscience Mineral Sunscreen Brush (again, this isn’t necessarily going to work for all skin tones, unfortunately). 

There is one caveat about these powder formulas. They’re not enough for your first SPF application. “You need a base of sunscreen before you apply a powder or certain sprays,” explains Dr Soni. Look for something that is water-resistant, but don’t rely on that and skip topping up, especially if you’re in and out of the water and towelling off often.

Don’t forget to apply sunscreen here… 

A few areas people often forget are: ears and eyelids, underneath straps, feet and the scalp. The scalp is tricky, but it’s a place where often people get burnt. Unless you’re really committed to using a lotion carefully and getting greasy roots, powders are often your best bet. Dr Soni notes that if you have thinning hair, it’s even more important to protect your scalp as it can be more exposed—and to always make sure you’re taking your sunscreen right up into your hairline.

As a beauty editor with acne, I'd like to first state that I know the perils of trying to find the best sunscreen for acne-prone skin all too well. You can settle on the best acne treatment, find the perfect skincare routine for acne and become an expert in how to pop a pimple, but slapping on the wrong sunscreen can undo all of your hard work overnight.

So yes, trust me when I say that I know just how tricky it is to find an SPF that doesn't make acne worse. You see, by their very nature, even the best facial sunscreens risk clogging pores. And a pore-clogging product is typically never a good thing for acne. Finding a sunscreen that doesn't break you out can feel like such an impossible task that you're left questioning the importance of it and wanting to sack it off altogether.

But after many years absorbing intel from some of the top skin experts in the world, I need you to hear me now: you need to be applying sunscreen to your face every damn day—even if you have acne-prone skin. Not only does sunscreen help protect skin against sunburn-inducing UVB rays (one of the main causes of skin cancer), it also protects skin on overcast, cloudy days from skin-damaging UVA rays (which contribute to signs of premature skin ageing). On top of all of this though, sunscreen application for acne-prone skin specifically is particularly important.

The importance of sunscreen for acne-prone skin

When the sun's out, it's easy for those amongst us with acne to want to skip sunscreen altogether in the hope it might help clear up our breakouts—and this isn't technically bad logic. "UV will actually often improve acne in the short term because it suppresses the immune system in the skin which is responsible for inflammation," reveals Dr Emma Wedgeworth, Consultant Dermatologist for La Roche-Posay. 

So if you've noticed your acne gets better when the sun's out, you're not imagining it. "People often report their skin being better in the summer or after a summer holiday," adds Dr Susan Mayou, Consultant Dermatologist at the Cadogan Clinic.

Despite the fact there is truth in this, as a blanket rule, most dermatologists say this isn't worth forgoing SPF. "We know that, long term, UV causes significant ageing of the skin and increases the risks of skin cancer, so it's very important to keep protecting the skin," adds Dr Wedgeworth.

And there are three very important reasons you should be particularly stringent with sunscreen application if you have acne-prone skin.

1. Acne products cause increased sensitivity

First and foremost, it's worth noting that acne products in general (from the best acne face wash to the best spot treatments) are prone to making the skin more sensitive to damaging UV rays. So, if you're using acne-specific products (we should always be tailoring our skincare routine to what our skin needs, after all), it's more important than ever to apply sunscreen.

Ingredients that can make the skin more sun-sensitive include anything that increases skin-cell turnover, such as acids and retinol. "Many acne-targeted products gently exfoliate the skin, causing increased UV sensitivity," warns Dr Alexis Granite, CeraVe consultant dermatologist.

If you're using prescription-based acne treatments, applying sunscreen every day is imperative. "If you are taking oral medication, such as Roaccutane, or using topical prescription treatments such as retinol, your skin can become particularly sensitive to UV radiation and increasing the risk of burning," says Dr Mayou.

And this isn't just important for your face, either. In fact, body acne (whether it be on your back, chest, neck or bum) also needs protecting from the sun, particularly if you're treating it with an acne body wash.

2. UV rays can worsen pigmentation and scarring

If your skin is prone to acne, chances are you're familiar with the perils of acne scarring—and UV damage can risk making things worse. "UV exposure may increase post-acne pigmentation," says Dr Wedgeworth. "It also contributes to collagen breakdown, which may further exacerbate atrophic scars (the dips and pits that can occur with acne scarring)." Yep, you can be armed with the best acne scar treatment out there, but SPF is still going to be your best bet.

It's worth noting too that pigmentation that occurs after acne is particularly prevalent in melanin-rich skin. Cosmetic doctor, and co-founder of Victor & Garth, Dr Lauren Hamilton explains, "Exposure to UV can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation—this is when dark patches occur following injury or irritation to the skin such as when acne has formed. Whilst it is temporary, it can take longer to fade in darker skin. Darker skin is more susceptible to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation due to the stimulation of melanin production following tissue injury."

3. Increased oil production can exacerbate breakouts

Okay, this one is less of a reason that SPF application is important for acne-prone skin, and more just something to be aware of. If you find that your skin breaks out more when you apply SPF, there is reason for it. "Sun exposure causes the body to sweat as a mean of naturally cooling the body. This can contribute to occlusion of follicles, which is exacerbated by sunscreen, resulting in a predisposition to blackheads, whiteheads and papules," warns Dr Mayou.

And look, I get it, it's really, really annoying that sunscreen and hot, sunny days can often make acne worse. But I promise you there are ways to avoid sunscreen-induced breakouts—you just have to know what to shop and how to apply it.

Important things to remember

• "Apply SPF50 every day, regardless of the weather forecast, to get the best protection," says Dr Mayou.
• "Keep an eye out for products that contain zinc oxide as it's tolerated by most skin types," says Dr Hamilton. "Although, mineral SPF can leave acne-prone skin congested, so you may be better suited to a chemical sunscreen."
• "Look for lightweight or gel-based formulas that are oil-free and non-comedogenic," advises Dr Mayou.
• Above all, avoid oil-based formulas and pore-clogging sunscreen sticks that may make your congested skin worse.

After speaking with the experts and with many, many years of testing sunscreens on my acne-prone skin under my belt, I'd say I'm in a pretty good place to deliver the best formulas out there for complexions plagued by acne.

With approximately a bajillion products on the market (just a ballpark), it's safe to say that the order of your skincare routine can get a bit confusing.

From glycolic acid to vitamin C serums to retinol and more, our skincare routines are no longer a case of simply cleansing, toning and moisturising. (Alas.) So if you're finding yourself regularly wondering 'what order should I apply my skincare products? Am I doing this right?', worry not. Because we're here to clear the fog on your skincare order.

'The order and steps depend on your skin type, which is why when reading blogs and online articles, you have to keep in mind the person writing might have totally different skin needs to you,' explains skin expert Ksenia Selivanova.

'For example, dry and reactive skin will not need a toner, and oils aren't suited to every skin. A good way to remember how to layer products is thinner, water-based products first followed by oil-based, thicker products, and always ending with SPF [during the day].'

Below you'll find a handy 'cheat sheet' for your skincare order. These are the steps you should be applying your skincare products in as advised by the experts. Be sure to bookmark for future reference.

Why the order of your skincare routine matters

Generally speaking, the rule of skincare routines can be summarised as thus: protect your skin in the daytime – SPF, best BB creams and primers – and correct your skin in the evening – retinols, concentrated serums, and heavier moisturisers.

Having all the beauty products in the world at your disposal won't matter if you're applying them in the wrong order, however. This is because products applied in the incorrect order – or even too many products applied at once – will dilute or cancel each other out; undoing all your hard work. Daytime skincare routine 

1. Cleanser

First thing's first – wash your face morning (and night too) as the first step in your routine, using your best cleanser and a hot flannel, microfibre or muslin cloth. 'Cleansing your skin is the most basic part of a good skincare routine and ideally should take place twice daily,' explains consultant dermatologist Dr Anjali Mahto. 'It functions to remove dirt, sweat, grime, microbes and pollution from the skin surface, as well as creating a clean base to then apply further products.'

2. Toner

If you enjoy using your best toner and it your skin has no problem with it, do so after cleanser. But whether it's absolutely necessary is widely debated. 'I'm not a big fan of toners as they often irritate the skin,' says consultant dermatologist Dr Justine Kluk.

'Not all skin types need a toner,' adds Kate Bancroft, founder of Face the Future. 'Sometimes a hydrating spray is a better option.'

Toners that contain AHAs or BHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids and beta-hydroxy acids) are a different story, as they act as an exfoliating step in your routine. These may help if you struggle with breakouts, clogged pores or slow skin cell turnover, depending on the particular acid. However, it's important that you follow the guidance on using acid-containing products and introduce them to your skin slowly.

'Caution is required with the exfoliating acids - the AHAs and BHAs,' Dr Mahto warns. 'Commonly used AHAs in skincare include glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid, and BHAs include salicylic acid. These can lead to dryness, flaking, itching, sensitivity and irritation if they are overused.

'Those who are more likely to develop sensitivity include those with dry or sensitive skin or a predisposition to skin conditions such as eczema or rosacea.'

3. Serums

Next in your routine comes the best face serums. In the morning, it's a good idea to use one of the best vitamin C serums as it offers additional protection for skin during the day. 'After cleansing, using an antioxidant serum containing vitamin C can help with skin brightening, as well as helping against harmful molecules known as free radicals, which lead to premature skin ageing,' Dr Mahto explains.

Hydrating serums can be used at any time of day, so you may want add one in here, too. (Layered before your treatment serum if you're doubling up.)

4. Moisturiser/oil/eye cream

Depending on your skin type, be sure to choose the best moisturiser for dry skin, best moisturiser for oily skin or best moisturiser for combination skin. They may be humectants, attracting water to the skin; emollients, providing a protective barrier to trap moisture; or occlusive, preventing water loss. This is also when you should be applying the best eye cream for your needs - whether that's for dark circles, bags or perhaps wrinkles.

5. Sun cream

Whatever your skin tone, sun protection is a must every single day – not just in the summer months! 'Using a sunscreen can help protect against skin cancer, as well as early onset of skin ageing, such as wrinkles or pigmentation,' Mahto confirms. Nighttime skincare routine

1. Cleanser

Start by removing make-up and washing the day's grease and grime away – double cleansing comes into play in the evenings – again using your trusty flannel, microfibre or muslin cloth.

For the primary cleanse, a cleansing balm or oil is best for removing make-up and impurities from the day gone by. After that, a wash-off cleanser like the one you use in the morning (which can absolutely be the same) actually cleans the face.

2. Face mask (optional)

A frequently asked question is, where do the best face masks fit into your routine? The short answer is after cleansing, before all your other skincare steps, about twice weekly. 'Masks, if used, can be applied once or twice a week,' says Dr Kluk. 'I would suggest applying a mask after cleansing in the evening, then following with the rest of your usual skincare routine.'

3. Toner

If you're a fan of toner, here's where you should add it in to your evening routine.

4. Retinol (avoid using with AHA/BHAs)

'At night, using a vitamin A product [like retinol] will help boost collagen production in the skin as well as even out skin tone,' Dr Mahto explains. Retinol is known for being a pretty potent potion, so on the days you apply it, swap out any acid-containing products to avoid any reactions. It's thought that this can make your skin more sensitive to the sun initially, so it's worth applying in the evening and always using SPF the next day. Which, we might add, you should be doing every day anyway!

'Following retinol with any other topical skincare will dilute the active ingredient, vitamin A, and reduce its effectiveness,' Bancroft adds.

Depending on your skin's level of sensitivity, you may want to avoid acids completely on the days you're using retinol (more on why later). If you're new to it, be sure to introduce it gradually and begin with a low concentration, like 0.3%. Every third day is a good frequency to begin with.

5. Serum

Again referring to The Inkey List's earlier advice, apply hydrating serums first and treatment serums second. 'AHAs, such as glycolic or lactic acid can be used throughout the week depending on tolerance and sensitivity to gently chemically exfoliate the upper layer of dead skin cells, leading to a brighter complexion,' explains Mahto.

6. Moisturiser/oil/eye cream

Finish your nightly routine with your usual moisturiser or the best night cream for your skin type. And if your skin is particularly dry, you could try layering an oil over the top to lock in moisture, but it may not be essential. Final step is your eye cream.

Where do LED masks fit in?

LED masks should be used after cleansing and before the rest of your skincare routine. Most dermatologists and facialists recommend using them on clean, dry skin so the light can reach the skin without being obstructed by sunscreen, makeup or thicker skincare products. Once your session is complete, continue with your routine as normal, starting with any hydrating or treatment serums before applying moisturiser.

While the exact order isn't likely to make or break your results, consistency is. Most at-home LED devices recommend use between three and five times per week, and because sessions typically last only 10 to 20 minutes, many people find they slot naturally into an evening routine while reading or watching television.

Are there products that can't be applied together?

More and more of us are using potent skincare ingredients, like acids and retinol, on the regular, so it's important to know which of the strong stuff don't mix.

'Vitamin A creams, such as retinol or retinaldehyde, may increase sensitivity to the sun and so should be applied at night – and SPF should be applied the following morning. The same goes for acids,' explains Dr Kluk.

While it's not an absolute rule not to do so, many people would find using the two at once far too irritating. 'I would avoid using multiple products with irritant properties at the same time,' explains Dr Kluk. 'An example of this would be avoiding the application of AHAs, such as glycolic acid, and retinol or any of the prescription retinoid creams together. Many people can't even tolerate using these on the same day, so my advice would be to choose one or the other unless advised otherwise by a dermatologist.'

Kate agrees: 'I don't like to mix acids and retinols at the same time; some skins are highly susceptible to retinoid reactions and mixing too many actives in one go is asking for trouble.'

These days acids come in just about every skincare form, from cleanser to toner, serum and moisturiser. So what's the safe limit for how many AHA/BHA products you can use in one go?

Final skincare routine tips

It's also a good idea to leave some time between products to allow them to work into the skin. While this likely isn't possible when you're in a rush to get to your desk, even leaving a minute between applications will allow your skincare products to work their magic. Try cleaning your teeth, brushing your hair or making your morning coffee between steps to buy your products more time to absorb into your skin.

We all now know how important it is to wear your SPF every day. Come rain or shine (or cloud for that matter). The best facial sunscreens not only stop us from burning but also they also protect your skin from the damaging effects of UVA rays. Things like premature ageing and hyperpigmentation.

And finally, the price. When you have to use something every day, you don't want it to cost a lot. At £15 this is a bargain beauty product that delivers.
