The 79th British Academy Film Awards are officially in full swing, with Hollywood stars and even the Prince and Princess of Wales taking to the BAFTAs red carpet at London's Royal Festival Hall.

Among them were A-listers Gracie Abrams and Paul Mescal, with the celebrity couple going viral as they made their official red carpet debut.

Abrams, 26, and Mescal, 29, have been dating since 2024. However, despite the buzz around them, the Normal People star and Close to you singer are notoriously private, rarely appearing together in public.

The BAFTAs therefore marked a major relationship milestone, with the A-list couple attending the ceremony together and posing for photographs on the red carpet for the first time.

Mescal was nominated in the supporting actor category at the 2026 BAFTAs, for his portrayal of William Shakespeare in Chloé Zhao's Hamnet.

And Abrams was there to support her partner of two years, with the Tough Love singer making a rare comment about Mescal and his film work earlier this year.

"I’ve found it nearly impossible to find the words to describe the weight of this film and the way it has remained in my bones since I saw it for the first time," Abrams wrote in a social media statement about Mescal's work in Hamnet.

"But we are sat in the kitchen right now and I am looking back on these pictures and got immediately teary, so I’m just going to say that Chloe is singular. Jessie is singular. Paul is singular. Also I love him - surprise."

Mescal has also spoken publicly about their relationship in recent months, describing their romance as "deeply precious" when asked about their decision to go Instagram official last year.

"The speculation has been kind of mad," Mescal has previously explained in an interview with GQ. "I'm not comfortable inviting any access into that part of my life. How I am in my private life is so precious to me because I get very little of it, and it might be public interest, but it's not public-obligated information."

The Critics Choice Awards 2026 kicked off awards season last night, with the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica positively packed with the biggest names in film and TV. While the red carpet was a hit online (ahem, looking at you, Megan Stalter and Paul W. Downs), the brilliant acceptance speeches have already set the tone for what we can expect during the 2026 run of awards ceremonies.

Picking up the Best Actor award for his role in Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet made an unexpected declaration of love to Kylie Jenner, while All Her Fault star Sarah Snook admitted she wasn't expecting to win, and charmed the audience with her improvised thank yous. But it was Hamnet star Jessie Buckley who really made waves with her poetic adoration of co-star, Paul Mescal. Upon receiving the award for Best Actress, Jessie thanked those she worked with, including Hamnet's director Chloé Zhao. Then, she turned to Paul and stated, with a laugh, that she "could drink [him] like water", and his adorably awkward response is going viral.

During her acceptance speech, Jessie started by thanking Chloé Zhao, sharing: "You have reminded me of the power of telling a story and the journey that you can go on to touch the deepest parts of what it is to be alive."

Then, addressing Paul directly, she left the Gladiator II star seriously blushing by saying: "Paul, I bloody love you, man. And I know loads of other women do in this room too, but tough shit... I could drink you like water, working with you every single day. You're a giant of the heart and thank you so much for making me a little more human."

When the cameras cut to Paul, viewers could see that he was visibly embarrassed by the compliments. While he smiled and squirmed nervously in his seat, fans absolutely loved this moment between the actors. On a TikTok video of the interaction, one person wrote: "She’s so real for this."

Another added: "Haha he is so damn adorable!!!"

A third wrote: "Aw he’s so shy."

Hamnet, starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, is based on the historical novel by Maggie O'Farrell which follows the life of William Shakespeare and his wife after the loss of their young son. Directed by Chloé Zhao and produced by Sam Mendes and Steven Spielberg, the film is expected to win big during the 2026 awards season with six Golden Globes nominations.

Gracie Abrams and Paul Mescal are as official as it gets in the age of social media. The American popstar has hard-launched her relationship with the Irish actor at last, a year after the two first sparked dating rumours. Gracie posted a video of herself on Paul's shoulders at Glastonbury Festival this weekend, and the video has since gone viral.

In the video, shared to the singer's Instagram Stories and widely reposted across social media, Gracie — wearing a white henley with Adidas track bottoms, dark glasses and a bandana on her head — is happily singing along to "Friday I'm in Love" by The Cure. Though they never particularly tried to hide their relationship, they never really shared anything about it publicly, either, except through some indirect comments.

This past January, Gracie and Paul were at the centre of break-up rumours when they were spotted at a Stoke Newington restaurant, and a witness said: "They were sat at a table opposite each other and Paul had his head in his hands as Gracie just sat there crying. She was crying so much that he then started to cry too."

The source continued: "She eventually got up and walked out of the restaurant while they were halfway through their meal and he was left to pay the bill before leaving shortly afterwards. Everyone saw it all go down, it looked like a break-up, we were just shocked at how public it all was."

But happily for the hopelessly romantic among us, it seems that the two are still going strong. The insider who called them "the real deal" circa December 2024 was clearly spot-on.

The buzziest casting announcement just happened: Barry Keoghan and Paul Mescal are reportedly part of the lineup for an upcoming movie series on The Beatles. In a press release on 1st April 2025, Sony confirmed to Marie Claire UK that the two Irish actors would be appearing in the four-film series alongside Harris Dickinson and Joseph Quinn. According to the release, Harris will play John Lennon, Paul will play his namesake Paul McCartney, Barry will be Ringo Starr, and Joseph will portray George Harrison.

An official photo of the four stars has also been released. Meanwhile, the press release included the disclaimer: "Credits not final."

Although it elicited an excited initial reaction from the four actors' fans, the timing of this announcement is also raising eyebrows: could it be an April Fool's joke? If so, our poor fragile hearts would be shattered. Anyway, let's investigate.

While the announcement has made it into most media outlets on 1st April, Deadline did publish an announcement on Monday 31st March. The publication reported that director Sam Mendes had confirmed the casting at Sony's CinemaCon, and had also provided details on the upcoming films, which are set for simultaneous release in April 2028.

Some fans are convinced that the 31st March announcement could be an elaborate ruse to make the April Fool's joke more plausible. When Sony Pictures posted a photo of the four actors on Instagram (on 1st April), people were quick to speculate. "Is this an April fools joke please say yes" wrote one person.

"Hey so feel free to tell us this is an April fool's joke at any time!" said someone else.

"Probably not smart to post this on April 1st…" remarked a third fan.

We reached out to a representative from Sony for comment on this developing story, and did not receive a response at the time of writing. But it's worth noting that while the casting is still causing doubt online, in February 2024 Deadline reported that Sam Mendes had partnered with Sony and Apple Corps on a four-film series, each of which would centre on one of the Beatles. This information aligns with what Sam reiterated at CinemaCon.

So, elaborate April Fool's or perfectly timed announcement? Either way - everyone is talking about it.

Paul Mescal and Gracie Abrams are currently facing split speculation, despite insiders claiming they were the 'real deal' just weeks ago. Although neither party has confirmed or denied the break-up rumours, they were reportedly spotted having a tense meeting recently that has since thrown their relationship into question.

A source has claimed that Paul and Gracie were dining at restaurant Jolene in London's Newington Green when they saw the pair looking visibly upset. The eye witness spoke to The Daily Mail and claimed: "They were sat at a table opposite each other and Paul had his head in his hands as Gracie just sat there crying. Bridgers has not commented on her break up from Mescal, but her 'Ghost in the Machine' song lyrics from December 2022 are widely believed by fans to be about the split.

"You said all of my friends are on my payroll/You're not wrong, you're an asshole," read her verse from the SZA song. "Screaming at you in the Ludlow/I was yours for free."

Phoebe Bridgers is now reported to be dating comedian and actor Bo Burnham, while Paul Mescal is reported to be dating singer songwriter Gracie Abrams - making their first public event appearance together at the Gladiator II party this month.

Paul Mescal met King Charles III recently, and has since admitted he wasn't overly impressed. The King attended the London premiere of Ridley Scott's long-awaited Gladiator II starring Paul on 13th November, and he spoke to members of the film's cast and crew.

Asked a few days later about what it was like meeting the monarch, Paul told Variety: "It’s definitely not something that was on the bingo cards. I’m, like, Irish, so it’s not kind of on the list of priorities."

Although he didn't elaborate further, Paul is originally from Maynooth in County Kildare and Ireland and Britain have had a long and complicated history, particularly with regards to the monarchy and ruling classes. Ireland was under British rule for some 700 years, as per the BBC, and the nation officially became the Irish Free State in 1922 following the Irish War of Independence.

Though Paul wasn't the most enthusiastic about his royal meeting, he also wasn't dismissive, and realised how much it meant to his director on Gladiator II. He continued: "But it's an amazing thing for Ridley, because I know how important that is for him. So, to see his film celebrated in that context was pretty special."

When the reporter pressed Paul on what he and Charles chatted about, the actor admitted: "You just kind of nod along and... I found it hard to hear exactly what he was saying, because your head is in such a kind of... so you're just kind of nodding along and just smiling."

Gladiator II has been in cinemas since 15 November, and its release comes 24 years after the release of Gladiator. It has received mixed reviews so far, with Brian Orndorf at blu-ray.com wrote that 'the staleness of Gladiator II is difficult to ignore' while William Bibbiani at TheWrap concluded his review with the following: "All I am left with are the words of Emperor Commodus: 'It vexes me. I’m terribly vexed.'

However, others have thoroughly enjoyed the return of the franchise, with The Guardian giving it four stars and calling it "a gobsmacking reboot".

However, The Guardian was far more impressed, giving it four stars and calling it "a gobsmacking reboot", while Digital Spy concluded: "If you can get past the lack of emotional punch and connection with its characters, Gladiator 2 is a terrifically fun watch.

Despite the wide-ranging opinions on Gladiator II, at time of writing it's still earned a very respectable 76% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its release in cinemas. If you're in the UK, you can expect to see the Hollywood blockbuster on Friday 15th November - and you can make up your own mind.

The 2024 BAFTA nominations were announced last week and one of the biggest contenders with six awards was Andrew Haig's All Of Us Strangers. The film stars Normal People's Paul Mescal and Fleabag's (Hot Priest) Andrew Scott and has been put in the running for Outstanding British Film, as well as Best Supporting Actor for Paul Mescal.

It has already caused a buzz on the awards circuit already with Paul taking home the award for Best Actor (Drama) at the Golden Globes. The BAFTA nominations mean the film has been listed for more awards than two of the most talked-about movies of last year, Barbie and Saltburn - cementing it as one of the ones to watch in 2024.

What is All Of Us Strangers about? 

The film is a loose adaptation of Strangers, the 1987 novel by Taichi Yamada, which follows the inner turmoil of the central protagonist after he meets a man who looks like his dead father. All of Us Strangers centres on Adam, a reclusive screenwriter whose day-to-day life revolves around watching re-runs, takeaways and a lot of screen time. By a seemingly chance meeting, he meets Harry, who encourages him to open up about his childhood and his long-deceased parents.

With Harry's encouragement, Adam travels back to his childhood home in the suburbs and is confronted by his parents (played by Jamie Bell and Claire Foy) who are full of questions about their now grown-up child. 

The two central characters straddle a line between love and friendship, providing some connection in what is otherwise a very solitary existence. Paul recently reflected on the debate around a straight man playing a gay man, he told The Sunday Times: "It depends who's in charge of telling the story. The issue is that there have been so many queer performances in cinema that have been offensive. But that's because the filmmakers and the actors have been careless. I don’t think this film exists in that conversation whatsoever. And that's it."

It's safe to say that the film has some steamy scenes as the sexual connection between Adam and Harry intensifies. When asked on The Graham Norton Show whether their families had seen the film yet, Paul replied: "With the Irish premiere, trying to allocate tickets to all the aunties and uncles is a tricky business. They have seen my bum before but there is a little more going on in this movie I would say!" This was followed by an admission from Andrew: "I don't want to be there when my parents watch it!"

How can I watch All of Us Strangers? 

All of Us Strangers has yet to be released in cinemas, but from 26th January you'll be able to watch the film in theatres across the UK. It was released in US cinemas on 22nd December. 

The movie currently has an exclusive theatrical release, meaning we won't be seeing it pop up on streaming services any time soon. However, once the film has finished its run in cinemas it will be available to watch on Disney+ in the UK and on Hulu in the US, according to reporting from Digital Spy.

The response from viewers has been extremely positive, with one commenting underneath the trailer: "This is one of those rare movies that makes you feel like you're stepping into an entirely formed and real world that you didn't know you needed to visit until you got there."

The Oscars nominees have been announced, with a fair amount of surprises - and 'snubs' - from the Academy. 

As many had anticipated, Austin Butler and his new accent have been nominated in the Best Actor category, and James Cameron's Avatar is up for Best Picture. While many are pleased to see that Michelle Yeoh is up for the Best Actress statuette for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, the lack of female nominees in the Best Director category has not gone unnoticed. 

However, everyone who watched Normal People and fell in love with Connell (and his chain) is thrilled to see that Paul Mescal is in the running for the Best Actor award. 

The Irish born actor has been nominated for his role in indie drama Aftersun, which tells the story of an 11 year old girl and her father.

Following the Academy's announcement that Paul was in line for an Oscar, his sister Nell shared a sweet photo of the family during a FaceTime call with everyone looking absolutely overjoyed. 

In the snap, Paul and Nell are joined by their parents and brother - and it is the sweetest thing you'll see today. 

Fans flocked to comment, with one writing: "Oh my god this is so precious."

Another added: "You must be so proud !!! this is amazing. he is so deserving of this."

The actor has released an official statement via Independent to thank the Academy and share his excitement, saying: "This is truly a special moment for everyone involved in Aftersun. 

"To be recognised by the Academy is such an insane honour and I’m so utterly grateful. I want to dedicate this nomination to my two friends Charlotte [Wells, director] and Frankie [Corio, co-star] who I love dearly! This is bananas, thank you!"

Alongside Paul in the Best Actor category are Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Austin Butler and Bill Nighy. 

When Normal People hit our screens in the early days of the pandemic, it's fair to say that Paul Mescal became something of an overnight heartthrob. Fans were in equal parts drawn to his character Connell Waldron's brooding demeanour and that gold chain - which found itself a fanbase of almost 150k followers on Instagram. 

And it seems it wasn't just us actually normal people who were thirsting over Paul and his delicate accessories - Phoebe Bridgers also made her feelings known over on Twitter.

Paul replied: "I'm officially dead."

By July it was reported that they were dating, flying across the Atlantic to see each other and by Christmas, Paul was starring in one of Phoebe's music videos.

Fast forward to November 2021 and the pair attended their first red carpet together LACMA Art + Film Gala presented by Gucci. Adorable. 

Now, fans are convinced that Paul and Phoebe are engaged following an interview in the Guardian. 

The publication initially confirmed the news this weekend by stating that the pair "are now engaged", however it has since been edited to say that they are "reported to be engaged". 

The news of a potential wedding has sparked an emotional reaction on Twitter, with fans expressing everything from excitement to 'mourning' - and some are even inspired by Phoebe's move. 

One wrote: "Two sexiest people in the planet off the market. I’m in mourning."

Another added: "No because Phoebe Bridgers watched Normal People, publicly thirsted over Paul Mescal and is now engaged to him and for that she’s my hero.”
