As the 2026 Oscars wraps up for another year, all eyes have been on the famous faces that line the seats in the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. The 98th Academy Awards saw the likes Amy Madigan pick up the Best Supporting Actress for her performance inWeapons, while Sean Penn won the Best Supporting Actor statuette - although he wasn't actually there to pick it up. Despite going viral earlier this year for smoking at the Golden Globes, he missed the Oscars with The New York Times reporting that he had "headed to Europe" instead.

Another A-lister that was notably missing was Margot Robbie. Despite the recent success of Wuthering Heights, which she both starred in and produced, Margot wasn't spotted on the 2026 Oscars red carpet and was also absent from the auditorium. So why wasn't Margot at the Academy Awards this year?

The last time Margot attended the Oscars was in 2024, when Barbie was nominated for Best Picture - although, controversially, its director Greta Gerwig was snubbed from the Best Director category. Additionally, Margot wasn't nominated for Best Actress, but Ryan Gosling was shortlisted for the Best Supporting Actor award.

Two years later, Margot has taken a break from acting and is now a mum to her one year-old baby boy, returning to the screen only recently to play Cathy in Wuthering Heights. There could be several reasons why she didn't attend the Oscars this year - she wasn't presenting any Academy Awards, she had no nominations or affiliation to nominated films, and she has only just finished the busy Wuthering Heights press tour.

Back in September, she opened up about motherhood in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. She said: "It’s funny. If you try to explain it to someone who has kids, you don’t need to because they get it. And if they don’t, it’s probably just really boring to hear. So, you’re just kind of like, 'It’s the best.'"

Perhaps she'll be back next year if Wuthering Heights is nominated at the 2027 Oscars!

Leonardo DiCaprio has once again made Hollywood history, officially adding another name to his line of high-profile Oscars dates. This year, it’s Italian supermodel Vittoria Ceretti, who has captured the spotlight alongside the actor (though they forwent walking the red carpet together) for the first time at Hollywood’s biggest night.

DiCaprio, 51, and Ceretti, 27, are believed to have begun dating in August 2023, when they were first seen together in Santa Barbara, California. Since then, they’ve kept things relatively low-key (as is DiCaprio’s signature), only appearing together at a handful of events, making this Oscars outing their red carpet debut as a couple.

Ceretti, an icon of the runway who has walked for the likes of Versace, Dior, Celine, and Louis Vuitton, also addressed the media attention that comes with dating a mega‑star in an April 2025 Vogue France cover story. She explained how frustrating it can be to be labelled “someone’s girlfriend,” but said that love gives her the confidence to shrug off outside noise. As with so many of DiCaprio’s high-profile relationships, the public is left piecing together clues from scraps of information.

From Gisele Bündchen to Toni Garrn, there are only a handful of supermodels, actresses, and fashion icons who have accompanied him to the awards night. The couple has skipped other major awards shows; DiCaprio attended the 2026 Golden Globes alone.

Marie Claire UK reported live on the 98th Academy Awards' red carpet, and one beauty trend had us stop in our tracks; colour was everywhere, especially on the lids. Signalling a break from the "clean girl" era, stars sported some of the more dramatic hair and make-up looks we've seen in years, with lashings of graphic liner and dramatic side parts.

Bugonia star Emma Stone sported a bright white glittery eyeshadow with a thin line of black eyeliner, while Chase Infiniti, of One Battle After Another, sported a soft, smudgy lilac shadow that perfectly matched her Louis Vuitton gown.

Zoe Saldana also wore a rosy-nude shade swept across the lid.

It wasn't just eyeshadow that made a great return. Sinners' Jayme Lawson sported a bright cobalt blue on and around her bottom waterline. On the other end of the spectrum, Teyana Taylor, from One Battle After Another, wore lashings of graphic eyeliner that extended past her bottom lid to look like extra lashes.

Bright lips also made a return. Sentimental Value star, Renate Reinsve, wore a coral-red lip, while Hamnet's Jessie Buckley wore a softer, warm-toned red.

It's no secret that one of the most enthralling parts of the Oscars is observing the countless celebrities filing in one after another, draped in haute couture. Watching the red carpet best dressed in real time is often a guessing game of which one of the major fashion houses has meticulously dressed each and every star, but easily the more entertaining pastime is seeing sartorial trends cement themselves for the season ahead. And at the 98th annual Academy Awards, one silhouette in particular has taken centre stage—peplum.

Not only is the A-line shape coming for our best spring jackets, but the A-listers have proven that it works for black tie occasions just as well. Complemented by the very best Oscars beauty looks, a nipped-in waist and conspicuous jutting waist skirt was the cut of choice for Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, and Misty Copeland, amongst others. Anna Wintour herself even gave a subtle nod to the trend in a longline cut when presenting the award for Best Costume Design.

It's safe to say that the majority of red carpet gowns aren't particularly easy to translate into our everyday capsule wardrobes, which is why silhouette or print trends always pique my interest. Peplum is a takeover I didn't see coming following the garish colour ways and mesh panels that accompanied the cut back in the 2010s, but if there's one set of people who will always prove my fashion judgements wrong, it's the red carpet attendees.

Whilst Kate Hudson opted for a column skirt cut by Armani Privé to accentuate the protruding waistline, Nicole Kidman's fluttery Chanel was embellished around the bodice and paired with a neutral pink-toned skirt.

But the main look occupying my mind—both in terms of wearability and red carpet appeal—is Misty Copelands ballet-inspired jacket by David Koma. A hint of tulle never goes amiss in my book, and a dramatic piece of outerwear is just the piece to revive any tired seasonal wardrobe.

There's certainly no shortage of peplum pieces on offer at the moment, and these are the pieces that will nod to Oscars red carpet style whilst remaining versatile enough for everyday wear.

The 2026 Oscars is well underway, and the biggest celebrities in Hollywood have gathered at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles to celebrate the very best in the industry. But one of the biggest talking points in the run up to the 2026 Oscars has been Timothée Chalamet - whether it's for his commitment to the Marty Supreme press tour, his Golden Globes shoutout to Kylie Jenner, or his head-to-head with Michael B Jordan for the Best Actor statuette.

However, last week Timothée found himself in hot water for his controversial comments about ballet and opera. And, as soon as the Academy Awards kicked off tonight, host Conan O'Brien addressed the backlash - and made a less than subtle reference to the viral interview. Within minutes of the show starting, the Oscars host said to the room: "I'm told there’s concern about attacks from both the opera and ballet communities. They’re just mad you left out jazz."

Taking the early jibe in his stride, the Marty Supreme actor was caught on camera immediately after, laughing along with his partner and Oscars date, Kylie.

In case you missed it, a clip of Timothée discussing his work went viral last week. In the chat with his Interstellar co-star Matthew McConaughey during a CNN and Variety town hall last month, he said: "I admire people, and I've done it myself, who go on a talk show and say, 'Hey, we've got to keep movie theatres alive, we've gotta keep this genre alive."

He added: "And another part of me feels like if people want to see it, like Barbie, like Oppenheimer, they're going to go see it and go out of their way to be loud and proud about it. I don't want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it's like, 'Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares about this anymore.'"

Sensing his comments may not at landed, he said: "All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I just took shots for no reason."

The Oscars are almost here, and ahead of Hollywood’s most prized night, I thought I’d lower the tone slightly by diving into the murky depths of La La Land’s underbelly. While the Academy Awards celebrate the industry at its most polished, all diamonds, designer gowns, and tearful speeches about artistic triumph (let’s just hope Timothée repents for his recent comments on the high arts), the history of Hollywood is just as often defined by scandal, ambition, and spectacular misbehaviour.

When you get invited to experience a Lena Bratschi facial, you do not dilly-dally. Bratschi is a facialist to the stars—her roster of clients this year includes Jessie Buckley, Elizabeth Debicki, Alicia Vikander, Kristen Wiig, Aimee Lou Wood, Nicola Peltz Beckham and Regé-Jean Page, to name just a few. In fact, I saw her right after she did the skin prep for Mia McKenna Bruce ahead of her BAFTA win.

This year, Bratschi has covered the Palm Springs Film Festival, the Golden Globes, the Critics' Choice Awards, the Independent Spirit Awards, and the BAFTAs—and now she’s gearing up for the Oscars. So, how does a celebrity facial (for the biggest awards show in the world, no less) differ from what us normies get?

Well, Bratschi, who largely operates from her West Hollywood Day Spa, Carasoin, explains that she uses the same methodology for everyone: tailoring the treatment based on the skin she's seeing in the moment. "Celebrities are under intense pressure from all the ceremonies, interviews and travel, so I have to combat those stresses by breathing life into the skin, and also toning, sculpting and lifting. Unlike regular clients, they can't afford any downtime and need immediate results, as they're often going straight to the event. Plus, it has to be the best possible base for make-up."

As I settle down in Bratschi's suite in London's Corinthia Hotel, where she saw all her BAFTA clients, she starts with an extensive double cleanse and steam to "detoxify" the skin. She then assesses my concerns before moving on to the "corrective elements", which can range from tackling pigmentation to lifting the cheekbones and refining the jawline. As I was contending with some dullness and sensitivity, Bratschi opted for an Ultrasonic Spatula for exfoliation, which is much more gentle than a traditional peel.

Next, it was onto the sculpting portion. She used not one but two microcurrents to carve out my cheekbones and jawline to impressive effect—in fact, I looked lifted well into the weekend, and this facial happened on a Tuesday.

She glided the cool prongs of the CACI Synergy Flex over my face; this tool is known as the "non-surgical face lift" in the industry, and combines microcurrent and LED light technology to lift sagging jawlines and cheeks, as well as ease fine lines and wrinkles. Next up was the CACI Microcurrent Gua Sha, which the facialist swears by for lymphatic drainage. Of course, there's a manual massage element too.

Bratschi utilises a lot of next-gen tech in her facials, but the focus is always on soothing and reducing inflammation. To this end, I was fascinated by the next part of the facial: a pure oxygen infusion. Here, concentrated 02 molecules are mixed with skin-loving vitamins and minerals and are sprayed via an impossibly fine mist. This soothes, tightens, dials down puffiness, all while encouraging blood flow to the surface for enviable dewiness.

Finally, there is an exosome infusion via electroporation—this is akin to micro-channelling, but there’s no downtime; it just enhances the delivery of the potent formulas Bratschi used during the facial. "It’s been a long passion of mine to make sure I treat my clients' skin solely with targeted ingredients that result in healthy, nourished skin," she tells me as she finishes up. "I approach my skincare like I do my nutrition. No fast or ultra-processed food, only wholesome, nutrient-rich food. The same goes for skincare."

Bratschi's candle-lit suite in the Corinthia was a serene oasis during the hustle and bustle of awards season, and that's completely intentional. "It's a gruelling time for them," she reflects. "Early mornings, late nights, hundreds of interviews, tons of appearances... So once it gets to the Oscars, everyone is frazzled, but they still want to look amazing. Making the skin "cool, calm and collected” is my priority."

Even though I am attending a grand total of zero awards shows, I left practically skipping—it was undoubtedly the best and most comprehensive facial I've ever had; there was zero irritation, but sky-high cheekbones and results that lasted for weeks.

In the world of cinema, few symbols are as enduring as the ruby red slippers from The Wizard of Oz, a film that has enchanted generations since its release in 1939. The iconic, glittering shoes, worn by Judy Garland’s Dorothy, have transcended their cinematic origins to become more than just a costume accessory, but a symbol of hope, magic, and the enduring power of dreams. It’s something Ariana Grande knows all about, having manifested the role of Glinda.

The slippers that have sparkled and shimmered on-screen and long captivated audiences were reimagined in Ariana Grande’s second outfit of the Oscars when the actress took to the stage to perform a medley of Wizard hits with co-star Cynthia Erivo.

Opening tonight’s 97th Academy Awards, the gravity-defying duo performed a magical mix of musical tracks from the film. Grande stepped onto the stage wearing a bejewelled scarlet gown saturated in light-catching sequins with a cascading train. The look was topped off with—yes, you guessed it, a pair of ruby red slippers scattered with jewels and crowned with bows (a recurring theme at this year’s Oscar awards). The pièce de résistance though, was a third ruby red slipper, this one pierced in the back of Grande’s gown as if a frenemy had tossed it at Grande as she was dashing for the red carpet and it became lodged in the dress.

The slippers might only have been nodded at in Wicked, but as a key part of the beloved original story, they represent Dorothy’s journey from the dust of Kansas to the vibrant land of Oz, and ultimately, her discovery that “there’s no place like home.” Perhaps in the case of Grande’s gown, the slippers not only give a spectacular homage to Garland but also hint at what might be next for the Blockbuster’s much-anticipated sequel.

Mikey Madison has been whipping the fashion press into a frenzy this awards season. She’s what my nan would call “a fashion plate” in that she looks incredible in just about everything and switches between vintage Giorgio Armani suiting and lowkey Cali cool uniforms with ease.

Tonight, walking the Oscar’s red carpet, Madison wore a baby pink and black satin gown by Dior evocative of Gwyneth Paltrow’s infamous Oscar win in 1999 for Shakespeare in Love.

Madison is up for the best actress award at tonight’s Oscars having already scooped up the best actress gong at the BAFTAs two weeks ago.

For her Academy Awards debut, she opted for a vintage-looking Dior column gown cut from swathes of ballet slipper pink satin with a contrasting black bust and a sweet ribbon—proof that the coquette trend isn’t going anywhere.

Makeup-wise, she maintained the retro mood with a slick updo—a refined take on the ballerina bun that added to the coquette effect—and her trademark feline eyeliner.

Although black is the luckiest colour to wear with the highest number of winners wearing the classic shade, pink was cemented in Oscar’s lore after Gwyneth Paltrow wore the sweet shade in 1999.

Paltrow’s infamous gown was designed by Ralph Lauren and hung from pin-thin spaghetti straps before unfurling into frothy swathes of baby-pink taffeta. The similarities don’t end with the pastel hue either. Like Paltrow, Madison has opted for single diamond studs and a dazzling diamond necklace. The look was finished with Manohlo Blahnik’s BB Black Velvet Pointed Toe Pumps, the same style she wore at the EE BAFTA Rising Star Award party in London last month.

It's the biggest and most glamorous night in the award season calendar, and the Oscars 2024 are set to be huge. This year, Hollywood's elite are gathered at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles for the 96th Academy Awards, with the likes of America Ferrera, Lily Gladstone and Christopher Nolan hoping to take home a golden statuette tonight. 

The A-listers have already started arriving on the Oscars red carpet with Billie Eilish in a two-piece Chanel suit, Vanessa Hudgens sharing her baby news in a black Vera Wang Couture gown and America Ferrera wearing custom pink Versace.

This year, Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things are expected to win big. We're covering the night live right here, so stay tuned as we keep you up to date with all the news as it happens at the Oscars 2024. 

According to reports, the Academy is 'holding a seat' for Taylor Swift in the hopes that she'll arrive at the Oscars 2024. According to Executive Producer or the show Molly McNearney, they're hoping that the singer will be there. She told Indie Wire: "Listen, we all love Taylor. She’s the best cheerleader you could ever possibly have in any audience, whether it’s the NFL or an award show, so if she wants to get on a plane and come to the Oscars, then we’ll hold a seat for her, 100 per cent."

Taylor wrapped up her shows in Singapore last night, so could she grace the Oscars red carpet? We'll have to wait and see...

Vanessa Hudgens kicked off the night by announcing that she is expecting her first child with husband Cole Tucker. Holding her bump on the red carpet in a a long sleeved black Vera Wang Couture gown, she smiled for photographers as she entered the building. Adorable! 

Ryan Gosling is preparing to perform at the Oscars tonight, with the Barbie star set to sing I'm Just Ken - reportedly, alongside 75 other Kens. Brilliant. 

The track is nominated in the Best Original Song category, and Jimmy Kimmel spoke about the upcoming performance, saying that it would be a 'big production' saying: "For a couple of months leading up, he's saying, 'Oh, I haven't been asked to sing.' That's untrue. He had to think about it for a while but he came in and looked around at the space, at the theatre and was, 'Okay yeah, I think I will do this.'"

Excited? Same.

As the first winner of the night, Da'Vine Joy Randolph is taking home the award for Best Supporting Actress. The star gave a passionate speech when accepting the gold statuette for her performance in The Holdovers, and she told the audience: "To every actor out there still waiting in the wings for their chance, let me tell you - your life can change in a day. It’s not a question of if but when. Keep going."

Liza Koshy's lesson in how to stumble with grace and humour has gone viral on social media. The Transformers: Rise of the Beasts star took a tumble on the red carpet wearing 8-inch stiletto platforms, and while those around her ran to help her back onto her feet she simply laughed and quickly composed herself. Billie Eilish gave a stunning back performance of What Was I Made For alongside her brother and musical collaborator Finneas. The song was a huge hit last summer after featuring in the Barbie movie, and the breathtaking stripped back performance earned the pair a standing ovation.

John Cena just introduced the nominees for Best Costume while wearing - well, nothing. In a nod to the 1974 Oscars streaker, John Cena side-stepped onto the stage holding just the winners card. Even Margot Robbie was surprised! 

The Best Supporting Actor award goes to Robert Downey Jr for his performance in Oppenheimer. He beat the likes of Ryan Gosling, Robert DeNiro, Sterling K. Brown and Mark Ruffalo, and it's his first Oscar! 

An animated clip of Emma Stone rushing around backstage at the Oscars is going viral on X, formerly Twitter. The video shows the nominated star talking to pals before realising she has to get back to her seat, and quickly running off. 

Celebs - they're just as chaotic as we are. 

Ryan Gosling's performance of I'm Just Ken was nothing short of iconic. In a sparkling pink suit and shades, it played on Marilyn Monroe's Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend and he was joined by Mark Ronson and his Ken co-stars. Ryan was also wearing his 'E' pendant - a sweet nod to his wife, Eva Mendes. Adorable.

Matthew Perry was recognised in the In Memoriam segment at the Oscars 2024. The Friends star was notably absent from the list at the BAFTAs this year, causing upset among fans online. However, he was included at the Academy Awards with one fan writing on X, formerly Twitter: "What a moment."

Another added: "That moment in the people who we have lost when Matthew Perry was mentioned got me man."

Cillian Murphy has won his first Academy Award for Oppenheimer, taking home the Best Actor statuette. Calling himself a 'proud Irishman', he finished his acceptance speech with a poignant note to the audience saying: "We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb and for better or worse we’re now living in Oppenheimer’s world now. So I’d like to dedicate this to the peacemakers everywhere."

Emma Stone has just won her second Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Poor Things. It comes seven years after she won her first Best Actress Oscar for La La Land, and during the incredible moment she was joined onstage by a number of legendary actors including Jennifer Lawrence and Michelle Yeoh.

Well deserved!

And for the final award of the night, Oppenheimer has taken home the Best Picture award. The film was a huge success at the Oscars 2024, winning a total of 7 awards including Best Editing, Director, Lead Actor, Original Score, Cinematography and Supporting Actor.

Award season is almost over, with the 2026 Oscars just around the corner. This weekend the biggest names in Hollywood will head to LA's Dolby Theatre to celebrate the very best in film for the 98th Academy Awards, and the prestigious ceremony is, arguably, the most anticipated event on the showbiz calendar.

In 2024, Emma Stone and Adrien Brody secured their second Oscar wins, meaning they currently have a very impressive 100% nomination-to-win success rate. This year, the Best Actress category includes Emma Stone yet again, this time for her performance in Bugonia. Can she make it three out of three? Other nominees include Jessie Buckley, who has already scooped up the Best Actress gongs at the Actor Awards, Golden Globes and BAFTAs for her performance in Hamnet.

As for the Best Actor nominees, Leonardo DiCaprio could pick up his second Academy Award for One Battle After Another, while Timothée Chalamet - who missed out on the accolade last year - is in the running with Marty Supreme. But, after his win at the Actors Awards last week, Michael B. Jordan could be going home with the golden statuette thanks to his stellar double performance in Sinners.

The 2024 Academy Awards are officially here, and while we wait to see who will take home the best actor and actress gongs, the most anticipated part of the night is undoubtedly the red carpet.

From the most popular Oscar dresses of the night to the measures in place for those renting diamonds, there's a lot to discuss—with our live Oscars 2025 coverage giving you updates throughout the evening.

But first, the 411 on all things Oscar dresses—the most expensive, the most appropriate and the best of all time.

Most expensive Oscars dresses

Go big or go home as they say, and when we say big, we mean several million dollars big, which is the estimated cost of the Dior gown Jennifer Lawrence wore to pick up her Best Actress gong in 2013. The dress was rumoured to be worth $4m, and that’s likely to be the cost of the dress itself (depending on the level of embroidery and detail, they can come with a six-figure price tag), as well as the contract J-Law signed with Dior.

Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman was paid $2m to wear a Dior dress back in 1997. Also up there is Lupita Nyong'o's $150k pearl-encrusted Calvin Klein dress which was famously stolen from her hotel room in 2015, and Cate Blanchett's 2007 Swarovski crystal Armani Privé gown, which was worth $200k - see our full round-up of the most expensive Oscar dresses of all time here.

What is the Oscars dress code?

Technically, the dress code for the Oscars is 'black tie' formal which would involve a black tuxedo for men and ballgowns for women, though it has become less strict over the years, with men opting for colours like blue and pink (we're looking at you Jared Leto and Timothée Chalamet), and women going for shorter cuts and suits.

The best Oscars dresses ever

It was an iconic moment when Audrey Hepburn won the Best Actress trophy for her role in the 1953 film Roman Holiday. Her dress was designed by Hubert de Givenchy and the actress went on to become his muse. The delicate flowers adorning the fabric seemed to chime with her elfin features. The look was innocent, yet striking and sexy and won her hearts all over the fashion industry.

In 1995, a year after wearing that safety-pinned Versace dress to the premiere of Four Weddings And A Funeral, Liz Hurley stepped out once again on the arm of Hugh Grant. This time she was wearing a slightly less out-there affair, a beautiful embellished gown (with the requisite plunging neckline still in place of course).

Nicole Kidman has turned heads in iconic dresses at a number of Oscar ceremonies, from shimmering gold gowns to red bow-embellished dresses. Not to mention, the likes of Halle Berry, Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Lopez have all worn some incredible pieces that landed them in our round-up of the best Oscar dresses of all time.

Fast-forward to 2013 and Amy Adams got it very right in a feathered Oscar de la Renta design and 2014 was Jennifer Lawrence's time to shine, picking a Dior floor-sweeper.

In 2015 and 2016, there were sequins, ruffles and feathers galore, with Emma Stone and Emily Blunt shimmering in Elie Saab and Prada.

2022 saw Zendaya stun in Valentino Haute Couture and Maggie Gyllenhaal wear statement Schiaparelli. And just last year in 2023, Michelle Williams and Florence Pugh emerged as some of the evening's best dressed, in Chanel couture and Valentino, respectively.

Audrey Hepburn wore Givenchy for her Best Actress win, taking home the gong for her iconic role in 1953 film Roman Holiday. 

Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, Oscars 1997

Nicole Kidman turned heads on the red carpet in 1997. No, it wasn't because she was stood next to diminutive Tom Cruise, it was due to her utterly gorgeous gown by John Galliano for Christian Dior. The Asian-inspired shift dress was part of Galliano's debut couture collection for the label.

Renee Zellweger, Oscars 2001

It may have seemed an odd and rather risky choice to wear yellow on the red carpet, but when it came down to it, Renee's wonderful dress by Lily et Cie practically oozed vintage Hollywood glamour. In the glare of flash light bulbs going off, she was every inch the movie starlet with her 1940s hairstyle and a slash of killer red lippy.

Julia Roberts, Oscars 2001

Julia Roberts made waves when she stepped on stage to receive her Oscar in 2001, and not simply because her dress was so beautiful. The actress eschewed the standard award ceremony practice for custom-made, never-seen-before gowns, in favour of this vintage Valentino masterpiece from 1982. By breaking Hollywood conventions, the actress instantly made vintage wear more covetable, desirable and ultimately fashionable. Valentino later described this moment as one of the highlights of his career.

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe, Oscars 2002

Reese Witherspoon graced the red carpet wearing a gorgeous black Valentino gown. With lace trim and intricate beading detail on the front, it was a truly stunning look. She was there to present an award with her husband at the time Ryan Phillipe. It wasn't till 2007 that she won an award of her own for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in Walk The Line. 

Halle Berry, Oscars 2002

Halle wore a completely unique dress by Elie Saab for the 2002 Oscars. With a satin train and some strategically placed embroidery, she wowed the red carpet onlookers. Later in the evening she was awarded the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Monster's Ball. An emotional Berry, who was the first African-American actress to win the award, gave a rambling, tear-filled speech covering racism in the industry, her mother and Oprah Winfrey. 

Jennifer Lopez, Oscars 2003

At the height of Bennifer fever 1.0, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck arrived hand in hand at the 2003 Oscars, with J-Lo racing to the top of the best dressed lists in this uncharacteristically demure Valentino gown. The stunning asymmetric dress was inspired by a design Mr Valentino had created for Jackie Onassis back in 1967. Lopez was reportedly obsessed by the former First Lady, and her passion paid off in the style stakes, leading to one of the chicest looks in her style history.

Julianne Moore, Oscars 2003

Julianne Moore dressed for the part of a silver screen siren at the 2003 Oscars. Her dress was by Tom Ford for YSL and the ivy green colour perfectly complemented her pale skin and fine features. 

Halle Berry, Oscars 2003

Halle Berry once again graces this list, but this time for her 2003 gold Elie Saab dress. Berry had asked Elie Saab to add more tulle to her $20,000 gown because, "she thought it was too transparent," let slip a Saab spokesperson. The glittering dress needed nothing else apart from a simple gold clutch. 

Charlize Theron, Oscars 2004

Charlize Theron proved that the simplest dresses can also be the most stylish when she picked up her Best Actress Oscar in 2004. Her glimmering Gucci gown took a classic floor-skimming silhouette, and added impact with a plunging backless cut and draping train. The look was topped off perfectly with slick 40s-style curls. 

Angelina Jolie, Oscars 2004

The ethereally beautiful Angelina Jolie wore a plunging white satin gown with matching wrap from Marc Bouwer at the 76th Academy Awards. She matched it with stunning jewellery. And it certainly paid off, with the look voted the most popular Oscars dress of all time.

Cate Blanchett, Oscars 2005

Cate Blanchett picked up her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for The Aviator in 2005, and won in the style stakes too, thanks to a vibrant Valentino Couture gown. The dress was designed specifically for the actress by Mr Valentino himself, who revealed at the time that he rarely offered custom-made gowns to actresses, but made an exception, admitting: "This time I decided to have one special dress, conceived for this one special actress." The buttercup yellow design proved a welcome shot of colour amongst a sea of black frocks. 

Nicole Richie, Oscars 2005

Nicole Richie was one of the surprise style icons of the Noughties. Initially shooting to fame as Paris Hilton’s wild-child sidekick, fast forward 10 years and Miss Richie has undergone arguably one of the most dramatic transformations of the decade. Once a reality TV queen, she is now renowned for her hippie-luxe style, seen through her love of long, elegant maxi dresses, tousled locks and clever use of layered accessories. Today she’s even managed to garner huge respect for her own fashion and jewellery ranges, Winter Kate and House of Harlow 1960. Her appearance at the 2005 Vanity Fair Oscars after-party, looking nothing short of stunning, was a real turning point in this master of makeovers.

Ever the Queen, Beyoncé made waves with her black velvet Versace gown at the 2005 Oscars - cementing herself as one of the best dressed Oscars attendees of all time.

Charlize Theron, Oscars 2005

She won an Oscar the year before for her role in the film Monster, and in 2005 Charlize was to present the Best Actor award. To do so she wore this utterly beautiful duck-egg blue haute couture gown by John Galliano for Christian Dior. It was big, it was frothy and it had a four foot train. We loved it. 

Drew Barrymore, Oscars 2005

Black was where it was at for Drew Barrymore. She wore a fitted corset dress which flared at the knee. The Atelier Versace gown was strapless showing off Drew's porcelain white neck and shoulders. The effect was simple and elegant.

Reese Witherspoon, Oscars 2006

Reese Witherspoon chose a vintage Chanel gown for the 2006 Golden Globes, only to discover that Kirsten Dunst had worn the very same dress to the very same awards just a couple of years before. She didn't risk such style snaps for the Oscars that year, sourcing a 1955 vintage Christian Dior gown for her big Best Actress moment. The dress might have been restored to its former glory by a team of stylists but the actress was thrilled to rave, "It's mine, which is nice!"

Michelle Williams, Oscars 2006

Michelle Williams' Vera Wang 2006 Oscars dress was a real love/hate case. Making almost an equal number of worst-dressed lists as it did best-dressed ones, many considered the canary yellow too garish for her pale skin tone. We thought she looked lovely, and the dress has rightfully gone down in Academy Award style history.

Not only did this breathtaking taffeta asymmetrical Vera Wang gown create an iconic fashion moment on the red carpet at the 2006 Oscars, the kind-hearted Keira Knightley later donated the sensational dress to Oxfam and raised £4,301 for charity.

Penelope may have missed out on the Best Actress accolade at the 2007 Oscars, but she won in the style stakes. Her blush feathered Versace gown ensured she made an entrance to remember, while its sheer extravagance makes it deservedly one of the most iconic dresses of the decade.

Nicole Kidman absolutely personifies elegance, and had millions of jaws hitting the floor when she swept down the red carpet at the 2007 Academy Awards. Miss Kidman was the ultimate scarlet woman in this breathtaking Balenciaga gown, which added a modern twist to the traditional column silhouette with a fabulous trailing bow, which tied at the back of the neck. Divine.

Maggie is one of our fashion icons. She rarely gets it wrong on the red carpet and this is no exception to that rule. In a midnight blue Proenza Schouler dress with a black feather train, she looked like a catwalk queen despite being a new mum.

In 2007, Cate Blanchett was up for the Best Supporting Actress award for her role as Sheba in Notes on a Scandal. For the ceremony Cate wore a wonderful gun-metal grey gown by Armani Prive. The slinky number accentuated the actress's curves and was embellished on the one shoulder with jewels and pearls. Cate wore a beautiful pair of vintage earrings that curved their way up her earlobe to finish off the outfit.

Simply beautiful. The year after winning a Best Supporting Actress Award for her role in The Constant Gardener, Rachel Weisz was back at the Oscars, this time to present an award. She dressed for the occasion in a champagne coloured Vera Wang dress with stunning diamanate detailing on the bust and a short train embellished with plaited satin and tulle.

Marion Cotillard topped the best dressed lists when she collected her 2008 Best Actress Oscar thanks to this stunning white and silver mermaid dress by John Paul Gaultier. We can't think of anything more fitting for an Academy Award winner than this curve-skimming fishtail frock, which was covered in hundreds of shimmering scales. Nothing short of perfection.

The 2024 Oscars are officially here, and A-listers are already getting red carpet ready in the hopes of making it into the comprehensive list of the very best Oscar dresses of all time.

Of course, an incredible dress needs accessories to match, and there's only one thing for it: diamonds. 

Now as we're talking hundreds of thousands of pounds here, a lot of celebrities just borrow them for the night (must be nice), but there is a whole process behind it.

Jeweller Martin Katz has been endowing actresses with jewels for over 30 years now, so it's safe to say he's an expert. Here, he reveals what happens behind the scenes.

“I remember my first encounter bejewelling an actress for the red carpet came when a client (an actress) asked me to loan jewellery to her co-star," Katz recalled. "It turned out to be a new young actress named Sharon Stone who was just about to hit the big time with Basic Instinct. I loaned her some pieces for that premiere and my brand went 'viral' from there.”

Since then, Katz has accessorised over 500 of Hollywood’s finest, from Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman all the way through to Sandra Bullock, Kate Winslet, Ashley Judd, Alessandria Ambrosia and Gigi Hadid.

What's interesting is everything that goes into making this happen. Whilst some brands do pay the celebs to wear the jewels (“eye-watering sums” according to Katz), he simply works with those who like his designs.

Who chooses the diamonds?

First off, it starts with the actor's stylist. “My team initially liaises with the stylists, and this can often be only weeks in advance. Since we are based locally in Beverly Hills we have developed close relationships with some top stylists who we work with throughout the year so we know their clients well,” Katz explains.

"Most stylists prefer to choose the gown first and then start considering the jewellery. On occasion, we have come across stylists who have a particular style of jewellery in mind then source an evening gown to fit that. We will then invite them into our boutique on Brighton Way for an appointment at which stage I personally like to meet with them to discuss ideas and show them pieces that I feel would work well.” he continues.

Once the celebrity approves of the choice, or requests a custom design, then “they have fittings in their ready-to-wear with the selected jewellery items and their hair and make-up done. They must see the finished look in advance and take several photos from all angles to ensure the look is flawless,” he explains. These photos also work to help styling assistants know exactly what the final look should look like on the night. 

What happens when it goes wrong?

Unfortunately, there's always a risk the celebrity won't wear the jewellery (or the dress, remember Anne Hathaway?), so the team has to bide their time. “They may suddenly wake up the morning before or worse yet, the morning of the event and change their mind on their outfit which can then knock on to the jewellery too," says Katz. "That would involve a last minute rush into the vaults to select alternatives and it’s happened before…”

And when we're talking about really expensive jewellery, you need to have a plan in place in case anyone tries to steal it - just think how many people come to watch that red carpet.

“Measures are taken to ensure the security of the jewellery and the talent wearing the piece too so we will send a security guard to accompany them," says Katz.

Disasters can happen though, and the jeweller's diamonds once scattered all over the red carpet - yes, really. “I will never forget though the year when Minnie Driver wore a multi-strand ruby of mine to the Oscars and unfortunately it became attached to her dress, causing the clasps to break and the ruby beads to dissipate across the floor of the auditorium. James Cameron was seen on his hands and knees helping to pick up the rubies for the distraught Ms. Driver. There’s never a dull moment at the Oscars!”

The complimentary bags, which will be gifted to the likes of America Ferrera and Christopher Nolan this year, are stuffed with over 70 brands who pay an inclusion fee of $4,000 to get their products in. In return, it's hoped that the celebs will fall in love with the goodies, and potentially market them to a wider audience. The bags are not officially affiliated with the Academy Awards. 

Founder Lash Fary said: "While this gift bag does, as always, have an impressive six-figure value, that is neither our focus nor goal. Just as any A-list actor doesn't 'need' millions of dollars to walk onto a film set, these gifts are given based on the invaluable stardust these nominees can bestow upon a brand. Of course, they can afford to buy these things; they are also in a uniquely favourable marketing position.  This is a straightforward win/win transaction."

Awards season is well underway, and just a few weeks ago the Oscars nominations were finally announced. While the dominating films were largely expected - Oppenheimer, Poor Things and Killers of the Flower Moon - the Barbie nominations caused quite a stir. 

The film has been nominated for 8 awards in total, but Margot Robbie missed out on a Best Actress nod and director Greta Gerwig didn't make the shortlist for Best Director. However, Ryan Gosling - whose sublime performance as Ken did not go unnoticed - has been nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category, as well as Best Original Song for I'm Just Ken. 

The nominees in this musical category usually perform on the night, meaning that Barbie fans have been waiting for confirmation that Ryan will be donning his white fur coat, headband and pointed sunnies for a live rendition of the song. But you might not want to get your hopes up just yet.

In an interview with Variety, Ryan explained that he wouldn't say no to a Ken spectacular at the Academy Awards next month, stating: "I still have not been asked. It might be too much of a risk to have me do it. I don’t know how that would work. But I’m open to it."

When asked what it would take for him to release his Kenergy on the biggest night in Hollywood, he said that they would 'need a budget' to make the magic happen. He also went on to reveal just how demanding the role actually was. 

He continued: "In some way, everything I've done led to it. And I can't believe I'm saying that. There were moments when I would do it where I'd think, 'I haven’t felt like I've worked this hard since Blue Valentine.'

"There were moments when I left Blue Valentine just completely emotionally spent, laying on the floor of the car on the ride home just done – empty. And it was even harder to play Ken. And I thought, 'How am I feeling that on this film?'"

The 96th Academy Awards takes place on 10th March 2024 at 11pm GMT.

The Oscars 2024 predictions are well underway, with the official nominees list coming this January. 2023 was the year of Barbenheimer, with the two opposing giants—Greta Gerwig's Barbie Wonderland and the darker, epic Oppenheimer—causing a cultural phenomenon and record-breaking viewing stats. But there are some other weighty predictions for Best Picture, with Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon the current favourite. Poor Things is also quietly becoming a stealthy contender, tipped as a dark horse by critics for Best Picture and Best Actress for Emma Stone at the awards. 

At the 2023 Oscars, Everything Everywhere All at Once scooped Best Picture as well as six other prestigious accolades including Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh. But it's looking less likely that one film could dominate as much this year, with other big contenders like Bradley Cooper's Maestro, indie favourite Past Lives and dark comedy American Fiction all tipped for Oscars success. 

After scouring the Oscars 2024 predictions lists from film critics and industry experts, these are the ones to watch for Best Picture in the Oscars race this year, as well as which actors are set to make the nominations list come January 2024. 

When are the official Oscars nominations announced? 

The Oscar nomination period will run in January 2024 from 11th-16th, with the official nominees named on 23rd Jan. The awards ceremony itself will be held on Sunday 10th March 2024, where the full list of winners will be announced at the usual glittering ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. 

Oscars 2024 predictions for Best Picture

The Oscars countdown traditionally begins after the festive season, but there are already predictions on who will come out on top next year. These 2024 Oscars Best Picture predictions are in no particular order. 

1. Killers of the Flower Moon

If there's one genre the Academy loves, it's a Western, with No Country For Old Men, The Reverent and, most recently in 2021, The Power of the Dog, just a few iterations on the genre that have scooped up at least one award. Killers of the Flower Moon is the latest offering from Martin Scorsese as director (and he also co-wrote the script) and examines America's relationship with Indigenous peoples through the lens of a Western drama. 

Leonardo DiCaprio stars and has been praised for his emotional portrayal of Ernest Burkhart, but it's Lily Gladstone who plays Ernest's wife Mollie, an Osage woman living in 1920s Oklahoma during the 'Reign of Terror' - a string of brutal murders in Osage County - who's generating some serious Oscars buzz. Scorsese says of casting Lily (via Variety) after watching her in Certain Women: "Lily’s character was quiet, she spoke very little, but she commanded the screen with her presence, with every move, every gesture. There are very few actors around who know how to hold the screen like that, and it was perfect for the character of Mollie."

2. Barbie

The buzz around the Barbie movie was unlike anything we've ever encountered before—a marketing triumph as much as it is an accomplished film. With Barbiecore now a fully bonafide trend and a Barbie sequel possibly on the way, it's safe to say the film has made its mark...but will it scoop up an Academy Award? Barbie is generally getting included in the round-ups for potential winners of Best Picture, but it's not seeing quite the same Oscars buzz as historical epics like Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon. Having said this, things look promising for Best Original Song and critics are calling Ryan Gosling a shoo-in for Best Supporting Actor. We'd be surprised to see Greta and co walk home empty-handed. 

3. Oppenheimer 

It's clear that Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer is a big contender; a dark and layered masterpiece that represents one of the most significant moments in the director's career so far. A film of epic proportions, the biopic is classic Oscars material, not to mention boasting some stand-out performances from Cillian Murphy, Robert Downy Jr., Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh. Nolan's first Oscar is seen as widely overdue by many in the industry, making him a strong choice for Best Director—but whether the film will go the distance for Best Picture remains yet to be seen. Oppenheimer is a moral tale at its core, with Nolan telling the crowd after a screening of the film: “We have to hold people accountable for what they do with the tools that they have. This is a movie about consequences.”

4. Poor Things

Anyone who's seen the trailer for Poor Things knows it looks a little... different. But having said that, it would seem that this surreal fantasy/comedy/historical hybrid is a welcome change if the early reviews are anything to go by—in particular, looking at the reception of Emma Stone's leading performance. Deemed by Oli Welsh for Polygon as 'perhaps the most original and charismatic lead character in any movie from 2023', Emma's portrayal as the Frankenstien-esque reanimated corpse Bella Baxter has captured the attention of critics across the globe, making her a strong contender for Best Actress at the awards. 

5. May December

Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore appearing in a movie together is enough to get our attention, but throw in the gripping subject matter of May December and it's firmly on the must-watch list. The plot (which is loosely based on the real-life relationship of Mary Kay Letourneau and her former, student Vili Fualaau) follows the story of actress Elizabeth Berry (Natalie Portman), who is set to portray Gracie Atherton-Yoo (Julianne Moore) in an upcoming film. Gracie became a notorious figure, hounded by the tabloid press after it emerged she was having a sexual relationship with a 12-year-old boy, whom she later married and started a family with. Uncomfortable stuff. 

6. Past Lives 

Celine Song's feature debut Past Lives is a thoughtful and emotive look at a romance that spans decades. The script is realistic, funny and at times very moving—only enhanced by its hazy soundtrack and romantic cinematography. Playwright Song fuelled the screenplay with her experiences as a Korean living in New York, exploring cultural themes as well as notions of nostalgia and longing. Writer and director Song said of creating the lead character of Nora (via an interview with El Pais): "[With Nora] I could dive into the nostalgia of a future and a relationship that could have happened but didn’t.” She continued to explain: “What I know about is life’s connections, illustrating what happens emotionally on a day-to-day basis, when sometimes you trace relationships that you don’t even know what to call." 

The film had a strong debut at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and has kept its momentum going, with film critics widely including it as the indie option to watch in predicted Best Picture round-ups.

7. Maestro

We're in familiar waters with Bradley Cooper's Maestro, a Leonard Bernstein biopic that showcases both Bradley and co-star Carey Mulligan at their best. If it doesn't scoop up the Best Picture prize, critics are strongly predicting some potential wins in the acting categories, for both Bradley and Carey in their leading roles. Rather than being a biopic that follows the cradle-to-grave format, Meastro centres around Bernstein’s great love; his marriage to Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). Some critics are predicting double-digit nominations for this classic Hollywood film. 

8. American Fiction

Cord Jefferson’s satire about how the US media exploits Black people delivers a clear message on race, but it's also being deemed by critics as one of the funniest movies of 2023 and a dark horse contender for Best Picture. Based on a 2001 novel, Erasure by Percival Everett, the film follows a frustrated novelist who's fed up with an industry that relies on offensive tropes and decides to use a pen name to reveal some home truths about the industry. American Fiction could be a dark horse when it comes to the 2024 Oscars predictions, with one Oscars voter telling Variety: “It’s such a discovery. That's the type of movie that wins the big one. I wanted to laugh and cry—I did both."

Tonight is one of the biggest, sparkliest and most glamorous events in the Hollywood calendar - it's time for the Oscars 2023. 

The 95th Academy Awards takes place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, with the A-listers gathering in their hundreds to see who will be awarded the honour of a coveted golden statuette - and for some, they'll be hoping to take one home themselves. 

The celebrities have already started arriving on the Oscars red carpet - although it's a champagne hue this year - with Winnie Harlow wearing a bold yellow Armani Privé gown and Ashley Graham in a stunning sheer black Alberta Ferretti dress.

Joining them are the likes of Austin Butler, Michelle Yeoh and Paul Mescal who have been nominated for acting award, and films like Elvis, Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Banshees of Inisherin are all up for the prestigious Best Picture award.

This year, the Oscars red carpet is actually champagne, darling. And the celebrities have most definitely arrived. 

Cara Delevingne looks incredible in a red couture Ellie Saab gown, and she is positively oozing Hollywood glamour. It's a yes from us. 

Many have noticed that this year, the Oscars red carpet is, in fact, not red. 

Instead, organisers decided to opt for a champagne hue instead - and apparently, it's already getting a little bit mucky. 

According to Variety, pieces of the carpet have been quickly cut and reinstalled in certain places to ensure that the stars aren't photographed next to marks. 

But it definitely does brighten things up - what do you think of it?

Rihanna has arrived! 

Looking incredible in a black sheer Alaia gown with a cut out around her growing baby bump, Rihanna was one of the last to arrive on the champagne carpet. 

Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio picked up the first award of the night, taking the statuette for Best Animated Feature Film. 

Ke Huy Quan has won the award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Everything Everywhere All At Once. 

The actor received a standing ovation when he was announced as the winner, and made an incredibly touching acceptance speech where he told everyone watching: "Never give up on your dreams."

Tearing up yet? Same. 

Jamie Lee Curtis has picked up the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in Everywhere Everything All At Once.

Just moments before, her co-star Ke Huy Quan took home the Best Supporting Actor statuette, making it a double win for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert's film just three awards in!

During her acceptance speech, she dedicated her award to everyone who worked on the film, as well as her parents who were both actors. 

Jimmy Kimmel's opening monologue definitely ruffled some feathers. 

At the start of the ceremony the host made a number of digs at Will Smith, telling the audience: "If anyone commits an act of violence anytime during this show, you will be presented the Oscar for Best Actor and be permitted to give an 18-minute long speech."

But it wasn't just the King Richard actor that Kimmel roasted - he also made a quip at the expense of the Babylon cast. 

He said: "There are some things that movies can do that TV just can’t. For example, a TV show can’t lose $100 million. Is the gang from Babylon here? They know."

Everything Everywhere All At Once fever is going strong.

Not only has the film already picked up awards tonight, but Stephanie Hsu - who plays Joy - joined Talking Heads singer David Byrne to belt out This Is a Life live at the Oscars. 

But there was one part of the performance that has tickled fans of the film. If you didn't spot it (seriously, where were you looking?!) Byrne sported some large, wobbling hot dog fingers.

Brilliant. 

So, who else has taken home an award so far tonight?

The Best Documentary Feature award went to Navalny, with An Irish Goodbye picking up the gong for Live Action Short Film and Ruth Carter winning the Best Costume Design for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The award for Makeup and Hairstyling went to the team behind The Whale starring Brendan Fraser, and James Friend took the statuette for Cinematography in All Quiet on the Western Front.

Have you spotted the celebrities wearing blue ribbons?

It's a theme that the A-listers have continued throughout awards season, and there's an important reason why. 

Cate Blanchet, Colin Farrell and Michelle Yeoh have worn the blue ribbons over the last few months, and tonight Billy Nighy was asked why he had decided to wear one too - and whether it is a political statement. 

He explained: "120 million people being displaced and children being in terrible distress, I don't think that is politics. And that is what this commemorates.

“It is a UN initiative. I wear it at the request of Cate Blanchett who wants to focus on that issue wherever we go publicly.” 

Lady Gaga stunned attendees and viewers with an emotional performance of Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick, which has been nominated for an Oscar. 

Before the song, she said: "You might find that you can be your own hero, even if you feel broken inside."

Paring back her look in a black t-shirt and Converse while wearing no make-up - a contrast to her earlier full-glam and sheer Versace gown - Gaga's stripped back look was just as stunning as her performance. 

It garnered a standing ovation from the audience - and it was truly deserved. 

Rihanna was next to wow the crowd with a beautiful performance of Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. 

She was a sparkling dream as she belted out the Oscar nominated song, and the audience once again rushed to their feet for another standing ovation. 

What a night of incredible performances! 

The Best Actor and Best Actress winners have been announced!

Tonight, Brendan Fraser picked up the Best Actor award for his performance in The Whale, while Michelle Yeoh collected the Best Actress statuette for her performance in Everything Everwhere All At Once. 

Congratulations!

It finally happened...

As the night went on, it became very clear that Everything Everwhere All At Once was on a roll with an incredibly impressive six Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing and Best Director.

So when it came to the Best Picture award, it seemed fitting that the film picked up the seventh award of the night. 

What a great night for the film!

Tonight marks the 2023 Oscars, known formally as the 95th Academy Awards, with A-listers descending on Los Angeles from far and wide to celebrate the past year in film. 

And from Elvis and Women Talking to Aftersun and The Banshees of Inisherin, there are plenty of films to celebrate as the 2023 Oscar winners are announced.

This year's ceremony is held at LA's Dolby Theatre, and hosted by Jimmy Kimmel with Hollywood nominees flocking to the Oscar red carpet (or, should we say champagne carpet) in show-stopping looks.

With the Oscars bringing award season to a close, there have been plenty of predictions for what the evening will bring, and so far Everything Everywhere All At Once has taken over the show.

But one thing that many have noticed is that a number of A-listers are continuing a theme seen at previous awards shows. 

Celebrities have been sporting blue ribbons over the last few months, from Cate Blanchett, Colin Farrell and Michelle Yeoh, to Emma Thompson and Paul Mescal.

A-listers are wearing blue ribbons at award ceremonies this year in support of refugees and displaced people across the world, with the pin sported being a #WithRefugees ribbon.

Among the celebrities to have worn #WithRefugees ribbons at award ceremonies this season are Cate Blanchett, Emma Thompson, Sophie Turner, Angela Bassett, Bill Nighy, Paul Mescal and Jamie Lee Curtis, who opened up about her decision to wear the pin on the BAFTA red carpet.

“My friend Cate Blanchett is asking people to remind us all in the midst of all the season of shiny things that of course there are terrible refugee crises going on all over the world everywhere all at once and we need to do our part," explained Jamie Lee.

When it comes to the most iconic Oscars dresses of all time, there's no doubt about it - Gwyneth Paltrow's infamous pink Ralph Lauren gown is right up there with the very best. In fact, twenty five years later, it's still one of her most talked-about looks. No small feat considering it dates back to 1999, and given the resurgence of 90s fashion trends in recent years it's no wonder that it continues to inspire.

Gwyneth wore the floor-length dress to the 71st Academy Awards where she picked up the prestigious golden statuette in the Best Actress category for her performance in Shakespeare In Love. The bubblegum pink taffeta gown was created by Ralph Lauren and features spaghetti straps, a V-neckline and full skirt. The simplicity of the cut means it has stood the test of time while symbolising everything that was iconic of that fashion era. She wore it with a matching pink shawl and a Harry Winston diamond choker, bracelet and earrings set.

It's said that at the time, Gwyneth didn't work with a stylist and simply went to Ralph Lauren a few days prior to the event to pick something out. It originally came with a corset-like top, which was switched for the more wearable one we know and love.

According to reports, she didn't want to put too much pressure on herself and simply wanted to 'look really sweet' - and it definitely worked. On the red carpet, she even told a reporter: "If you think about how much people are talking about something as silly as a dress, I think it would make me absolutely incapable of leaving the house. So I just tuned it all out and wore what I thought was pretty."

While the dress still divides some people (her mother Blythe Danner was said to hate it), it is largely still loved by most to this day, and it looks like its story is set to carry on. Gwyneth told The Hollywood Reporter that her daughter is welcome to it for her prom, hoping that it will get its time to shine once again, explaining: "Maybe she’ll wear it to prom and do a Pretty in Pink thing and resew it and cut it up".

Lucky girl.

The Oscars will air in the UK in the late hours of Sunday 10th March, kicking off at 11pm and running until 3am GMT on Monday 11th March. For the first time, UK viewers can watch the Oscars 2024 on ITV with the ITVX streaming platform airing red carpet footage from 9.30pm GMT, and ITV1 broadcasting the Oscars Live at 10.15pm GMT.

The Academy Awards 2023 is almost here, and before the ceremony on Sunday we're admiring the best Oscars dresses ever, which had us questioning which star has worn the most expensive dress at the Oscars?

Every year, A-list actresses take to the red carpet in the most exquisite couture gowns, from the likes of Valentino, Dior, Chanel, Prada and other premium designer houses.

Naturally, with so much work going into them (most of them take hours and hours to make, especially if they're embellished), there comes a hefty price tag.

Originally, it was thought Nicole Kidman had worn the most expensive Oscars dress of all timeto the 1997 Academy Awards. It was a chartreuse Haute Couture gown designed by John Galliano for Christian Dior, and she was rumoured to have been paid $2m to wear it to the event. Yep, that's a thing.

But it turns out that eye-watering sum doesn't come close to the most expensive dress ever worn at the Osca. Nicole was pipped to the post by none other than Jennifer Lawrence and the fabulous strapless ballgown she wore to pick up her Best Actress gong at the 2013 ceremony.

You will remember that the cream gown featured a gorgeous voluminous skirt that sadly led her to fall on the stairs when she went to pick up her gong.

It was designed by Raf Simons for Christian Dior Haute Couture and was one of his final looks of his collection that season. Jennifer Lawrence later said not many fittings went into it, she just tried it on that morning and it fit.

The dress is rumoured to be worth $4m, double what Nicole Kidman's was, and that's likely to be the cost of the dress itself (depending on the level of embroidery and detail, they can come with a six figure price tag), as well as the contract J-Law signed with Dior.

At the time, she'd signed a three-year deal with the label, worth $15m, and as part of it would only wear Dior to red carpet events.

The 2023 Oscars will air in the UK in the early hours of Sunday 12th March from midnight.

The Oscars nominees have been announced, with a fair amount of surprises - and 'snubs' - from the Academy. 

As many had anticipated, Austin Butler and his new accent have been nominated in the Best Actor category, and James Cameron's Avatar is up for Best Picture. While many are pleased to see that Michelle Yeoh is up for the Best Actress statuette for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, the lack of female nominees in the Best Director category has not gone unnoticed. 

However, everyone who watched Normal People and fell in love with Connell (and his chain) is thrilled to see that Paul Mescal is in the running for the Best Actor award. 

The Irish born actor has been nominated for his role in indie drama Aftersun, which tells the story of an 11 year old girl and her father.

Following the Academy's announcement that Paul was in line for an Oscar, his sister Nell shared a sweet photo of the family during a FaceTime call with everyone looking absolutely overjoyed. 

In the snap, Paul and Nell are joined by their parents and brother - and it is the sweetest thing you'll see today. 

Fans flocked to comment, with one writing: "Oh my god this is so precious."

Another added: "You must be so proud !!! this is amazing. he is so deserving of this."

The actor has released an official statement via Independent to thank the Academy and share his excitement, saying: "This is truly a special moment for everyone involved in Aftersun. 

"To be recognised by the Academy is such an insane honour and I’m so utterly grateful. I want to dedicate this nomination to my two friends Charlotte [Wells, director] and Frankie [Corio, co-star] who I love dearly! This is bananas, thank you!"

Alongside Paul in the Best Actor category are Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Austin Butler and Bill Nighy. 

Awards season is well and truly underway, with the Golden Globes kicking things off earlier this month. For those wanting to watch the Oscars 2023 in the UK may struggle as the awards ceremony will kick off at 8 pm Eastern Time on 12 March, which is 1 am on 13 March for those in the UK.

The ceremony will last a few hours, which means watching live will be an all-nighter - almost. 

Die-hard movie buffs in the UK can watch the ceremony on Sky Cinema's dedicated Oscars channel, or on a highlights reel on Sky Max post-Oscars.

Will Smith has resigned from the Oscars Academy, and been banned from Academy events for the next 10 years, and now he could be at risk of losing his Oscars gong, which is his first Oscars award.

Last month the Hitch actor hit out at comedian Chris Rock, after he appeared to poke fun at Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, which is a result of a health condition called alopecia.

After slapping Chris, Will returned to his seat, but continued to shout at Chris from his seat, and said: “Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth”.

Just weeks after the 94th Academy Awards and talks are still underway about Will and his actions on the night, and there is reportedly a "50/50 chance" Will could have his first ever Oscars gong rebuked.

The board consists of 54 members, which is split between 25 female and 29 male. But the group are said to be "almost entirely split" on whether to take Will's Best Actor title for his role in King Richard back.

A source told The Sun Online: "There have been at least two different Zoom and conference calls with various members, and specific governors over the past ten days.

"The decision was made earlier this week to expedite the hearing in the wake of Will’s resignation, and during that call it was clear that the decision would go to the wire.

"The members — of which there are over 9,000, with hundreds of WhatsApp groups flying about — are completely split.

"The governors themselves are also said to be in disagreement.

"Given, though, that convicted sexual predator Harvey Weinstein and fugitive child rapist Roman Polanski haven’t been stripped of their gongs, the general consensus is that it would be madness and rank hypocrisy to take such a stand now.

"But, as we all know, Hollywood is a law unto itself, frankly."

Will Smith has been banned from the Oscars and Academy events for the next 10 years, after he slapped Chris Rock at this year's awards ceremony.

According to TMZ the Academy's Board of Governors met on Friday 8 April to vote on the next steps for the 53-year-old actor, who picked up the Best Actor award for his role in King Richard at the 94th Academy Awards last month.

It has been reported the Academy President and CEO voted during the meeting, and the decision was made to ban Will from attending any Academy events "in person or virtually".

The statement read: "The Board of Governors has decided, for a period of 10 years, from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards."

The Hitch star has remained quiet since the ordeal, but acknowledged and accepted the punishment.

He replied in a separate statement, and wrote: "I accept and respect the Academy's decision."

In one apology, which Will shared on his Instagram account, he wrote: "Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behaviour at last night's Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada's medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally."

"I would like to publicly apologise to you Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be."

Some insist Will should have been removed from the event, but the Hitch star was prevented from being "physically removed" after the altercation.

Speaking on ABC's Good Morning America, the producer of the Oscars, Will Packer, said: "I had not been a part of those conversations.

"So, I immediately went to the Academy leadership that was on site and I said, 'Chris Rock doesn't want that'."

Packer has insisted the comedian refused for any action to take place to discipline Will on the evening, and was "not angry" at Will or by the moment.

"Rock has made it clear that he does not want to make a bad situation worse. That was Chris's energy. His tone was not retaliatory. His tone was not angry", Packer added.

He continued: "So I was advocating what Rock wanted at that time, which was not to physically remove Will Smith at that time, because, as it has now been explained to me, that was the only option at that point.

"It has been explained to me that there was a conversation that I was not a part of to ask him to voluntarily leave."

Chris also urged for police not to get involved in the matter either, although Will - who has Jaden, Willow and Trey Smith - was at risk of being charged with "battery".

Packer continued: "They were saying, you know, this is - battery was the word they used at that moment. They said, 'We will go get him. We are prepared. We're prepared to go get him right now. You can press charges. We can arrest him'.

"They were laying out the options, and as they were talking, Chris was being very dismissive of those options. He was like, 'No, I'm fine'. He was like, 'No, no, no', Even to the point where I said, 'Rock, Let them finish'.

"The other LAPD officers finished laying out what his options were and they said, 'Would you like us to take any action?' And he said, 'No'. He said, 'No'."

Will Smith slapping Chris Rock on stage during this year's Oscars Awards was the conversation on everyone's lips this awards season.

Almost one week on from the 94th Academy Awards and the Hitch actor has decided to resign from the Oscars Academy following the altercation, which took place on stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on 29 March.

On the evening Will took to the stage, and lashed out at Chris after he joked about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, as he appeared to poke fun at the 50-year-old actor's shaved head, which is a result of her hair-loss condition, alopecia.

All fired up, the King Richard actor – who picked up the Best Actor award for his role in the production – fumed: “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth.”

The 53-year-old actor made this decision because he believes his actions on the night were "inexcusable".

In a statement from the actor, it read: "My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable."

"I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work.”

“So, I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate.”

The Academy have accepted his resignation, and will "continue to move forward" with disciplinary proceedings following the assault.

Chris addressed the altercation for the first time earlier this week, revealing he was ‘still processing’ what happened, and Will Smith released a lengthy apology on Instagram about his behaviour.

It has had a mixed response from Hollywood stars, but the board of governors met on Wednesday to discuss violations against their standards of conduct, and repercussions for the actor could include suspension, expulsion or other sanctions.

The moment has since sparked many conversations about mocking autoimmune disorders (Jada has previously opened up about her struggle with alopecia) and male violence.

From feuds to reunions

The Oscars 2022 may have been pushed back a few months due to the coronavirus pandemic, but it certainly was back with a bang this year.

Despite fears the annual ceremony may not go ahead due to Covid outbreak, Zendaya and Jessica Chastain's sparkly designer outfit turned heads, and the well-deserved triumph Dune and CODA saw last night blew our minds.

But there are some more impressive, heartfelt, and quite shocking moments from the 94th Academy Awards, which took place at The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on 27 March, you may have missed.

Don't fret, as we will give you the full lowdown on what went on during the annual ceremony on stage, and off stage.

From that fight, and the tributes to those suffering in Ukraine and Betty Whites in memoriam, to unmissable music performances by Beyonce, and many iconic film cast reunions.

1. Beyoncé's performance

The opening performance of any concert, movie, song, and awards ceremony sets the precedent, so of course Beyoncé performing her track Be Alive to kick off this year's awards ceremony meant this was destined to be one heck of a bash.

The powerhouse belted out the track from Venus and Serena Williams' hometown tennis courts in Compton, Los Angeles, ahead of the show to honour the movie about the tennis pro's lives in King Richard. 

Be Alive was nominated for Best Original song, but missed out to Billie Eilish's No Time To Die, though Will Smith picked up the gong for Best Actor in the movie.

2. The many film reunions

We love a reunion like everyone else, and after over two years in lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic, it is no surprise the reunions came in by the dozen at the 94th Academy Awards.

Firstly on the red carpet Zendaya and Spider Man: No Way Home co-star Andrew Garfield posed for pictures together, and could be seen laughing and joking together, just months after the hotly anticipated was released last year.

Pulp Fiction icons Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, and Uma Thurman reunited on stage to present the Best Actor award. But prior to reading out the envelope John and Uma reenacted that iconic dance scene in the Quentin Tarantino 1994 hit.

Speaking of 90's movie classics, White Men Can't Jump cast Woody Harrelson, Wesley Snipes and Rosie Perez reunited to present the Achievement in Cinematography award 30 years after the film hit the big screen. Of course, they joked about their characters in the movie, and Woody - who played Billy Hoyle in the production - not being as good a basketball player as he really is.

3. Will Smith and Chris Rock fight

You couldn't miss it, and you can't un-see it either. Even comedian Chris Rock claimed the moment would go down in history. He said "That was the greatest night in the history of television."

But let's backtrack a little, and explain the turn of events.

Will Smith smacked Chris Rock after he joked about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith – but this was no prank. Chris appeared to poke fun at Jada's shaved head, which is a result of an ongoing battle with alopecia. But Will did not take it lightly and instantly jumped onto the stage to slap Chris, before shouting "Keep my wife's name out your f***ing mouth".

But Chris insisted it was just a GI Jane joke, and not a slant on the illness.

4. Betty White tribute

Betty White tragically passed away in December 2021, and to mark the iconic actor's life and career, a segment dedicated to The Proposal presented by Jamie Lee Curtis was scheduled into the show.

Not only did Jamie pay tribute to Betty with her outfit, but her plus one, who was rescue dog Mac-N-Cheese, and Jamie urged the audience to adopt a pet like Betty would have wanted before images of the star appeared on screen.

During her speech Jamie said: "She was not only a Golden Girl, she was a legend who brightened every room she walked in and brought a smile to the faces of all who watched her on the screen. And day in and day out for almost a century, she was a woman who cared so much for not just her two-legged friends but for animals just like this."

5. Ukraine moment of silence

A moment of silence was held at this year’s Oscars ceremony 2022 to pay respect to those in Ukraine suffering from the Russia invasion.

Prior to the heartfelt moment Ukraine-born Mila Kunis spoke out about the horrific event, which saw Russia president unleash a multi-pronged attack on Ukraine on February 24 that is still ongoing.

Reba McEntire went on to perform Somehow You Do from Four Good Days on stage, which was followed by the moment of silence.

6. Unexpected Encanto collaboration

The track from Disney phenomena Encanto, We Don't Talk About Bruno, which has had us all singing our hearts out was performed at this year's Oscars.

John Leguizamo, who plays the role of Bruno in the production, introduced his family and fellow cast members to the stage to belt out the top-streamed track from the movie.

But, in a plot twist, Megan Thee Stallion appeared on stage to drop a remix verse - much to our surprise.

7. ASL reaction

CODA stormed the Oscars as it picked up three awards, including Best Picture, as well as Best Adapted Screenplay, while Troy Kotsur picked up the Best Actor in a Supporting Role title.

The movie depicts the only child who can hear in a deaf family trying to navigate her life, education and career, and the fear of leaving her family to pursue her dreams.

Troy - who portrays Frank Rossi in the production - gave a heartfelt speech as he picked up his award, which saw him thank his dad for teaching him, and hail his father his "hero". The moving acceptance speech touched many hearts and saw the audience stand in ovation to applause in ASL.

8. Speed dating

Regina Hall took the opportunity at this year's Academy Awards to enjoy a little speed dating. That's right.

She called out single males and brought them on stage for her to "emergency test".

Speaking on stage, she said: "Before we go on with the show we just have to do quick emergency testing backstage. Don't worry it's only a few people. It's totally random."

Timothée Chalamet, Tyler Perry, Bradley Cooper and Simu Liu were called up on stage, as was Will Smith in a tongue in cheek request, after he and wife Jada Pinkett Smith previously addressed "entanglements" during their relationship, although Will declined.

9. Unplanned on-stage interruptions

Not only did Will Smith storm the stage, but so did DJ Khaled.

Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall were the hosts leading the awards ceremony this year, but the I'm The One hitmaker thought the trio needed a better introduction, and joined them on stage to introduce them better.

"Hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up. Let me introduce the three queens, right. Let me introduce this the right way. I'm talking about actresses, comedians, moguls, bosses. They didn't believe in us. The Oscars did", he said.

10. 60 years of James Bond tribute

"The name is Bond, James Bond." Iconic!

Can you believe we've enjoyed 60 years of James Bond movies? Us neither.

To mark the major milestone a segment dedicated to the franchise took place at the Oscars ceremony. Athletes Kelly Slater, Tony Hawk and Shaun White took to the stage to praise the iconic action films.

Kelly said: "While we tried our best to be game-changers in our respective sports, there's no question James Bond was a game-changer influencing our culture and the look and standards of films for over half a century."

The speech followed a video montage dedicated to the Bond movies, with clips of the most memorable and iconic scenes over the six decades appearing on screen.

Now, we have to wait another year for the Oscars to come around again - and we can't wait.

Betty White died in December 2021

Betty White tragically passed away in December 2021, but the late actor was in our thoughts at the Oscars 2022 for numerous reasons.

The 94th Academy Awards saw a segment dedicated to The Proposal star following her passing, and the in memoriam was presented by Jamie Lee Curtis, who worked with Betty on 2010 rom-com You Again.

Jamie, 63, took things one step further as her outfit, and plus one, who came in the form of a rescue dog, was inspired by Betty.

The Freaky Friday star wore a crystal embroidered navy dress designed by British fashion designer Stella McCartney, while Cathy Waterman provided the sustainably and ethically sourced jewellery, to add to the blue ribbon Jamie wore to support refugees in Ukraine amidst Russia war.

Speaking about her outfit ahead of the 94th Academy Awards to PEOPLE, Jamie said: "Here's the series of fortunate events that led to that moment at the Oscars.

"My first thought was that I should bring out a rescue dog with me since Betty White loved animals more than people. It would honour her legacy of activism and support for animal rights. I then thought I should wear a designer who is an animal rights supporter and who uses sustainable materials and non-animal materials in their designs.

"Stella McCartney has been carrying on the legacy of her mother, Linda McCartney, and her lifelong veganism and animal rights activism.

"Within 10 minutes Stella and I were texting and the dress was designed. There were some complications of getting a little rescue dog due to union rules, but I persevered and I'm happy that I was able to shine the many bright lights of that moment on the heroes who rescue animals and who offer them a new chance at living in a loving and nurturing family. I love the 'connect the dots' of this whole moment."

Russia waged war in February

A moment of silence was held at this year's Oscars ceremony 2022 to pay respect to those in Ukraine suffering from the Russia invasion.

Prior to the heartfelt moment Ukraine-born Mila Kunis spoke out about the horrific event, which saw Russia president unleash a multi-pronged attack on Ukraine on February 24 that is still ongoing.

She said: "Recent global events have left many of us feeling gutted. Yet when you witness the strength and dignity of those facing such devastation, it's impossible to not be moved by their resilience.

"One cannot help but be in awe of those who find strength to keep fighting through unimaginable darkness."

Reba McEntire went on to perform Somehow You Do from Four Good Days on stage, which was followed by the moment of silence.

A statement released from Oscars organisers discussing the minute tribute, read: "To show our support for the people of Ukraine currently facing invasion, conflict, and prejudice within their own border.

"While film is an important avenue to express our humanity in times of conflict, the reality is millions of families in Ukraine need food, medical care, clean water and emergency services."

The Oscars - also known as 94th Academy Awards - urged viewers and guests to #StandWithUkraine, and encouraged people to donate funds or supplies, to those in Ukraine who have lost loved ones, been displaced due to the war, and in need to food, medical help and shelter.

It continued: "Resources are scarce and we collectively as a global community can do more."

Mila, 38, previously spoke out in a personal video with husband Asthon Kutcher about the heartbreaking ordeal unfolding in her home country.

In the post, she said: "I was born in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, in 1983. I came to America in 1991 and I have always considered myself an American. A proud American.

"I love everything that this country has done for myself and my family. But today, I have never been more proud to be a Ukrainian.”

The Hollywood stars went on to condemn the invasion saying “there is no place in this world for this kind of unjust attack on humanity.”

As Russia continue to attack Ukraine, which has seen over one thousand people, including children, die, and millions more displaced.

In the words of Chris Rock "uh oh".

The Oscars 2022 took a turn for the worse, when Will Smith smacked Chris Rock after he joked about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith - but this was no prank, claim sources.

During the 94th Academy Awards ceremony, which was held at The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday 27 March, comedian Chris appeared to poke fun at Jada, 50, shaved head.

But the comment did not go down well with the couple, as Jada first opened up about her battle with alopecia, which causes hair loss, in 2018.

While presenting the Best Documentary award, Chris said: "Jada, can't wait for GI Jane 2."

In GI Jane Demi Moore - who portrays Jordan O'Neill - sports a shaved head for the role.

The camera panned to the audience, and saw Jada shaking her head and rolling her eyes, while Will, 53, was chuckling. But moments before Will Smith, 53, made his way on stage.

Chris seemed confused, and slightly alarmed, in footage of Will approaching him as he said: "I'm out here... uh oh", before Will slaps him round the face.

All fired up, the King Richard actor - who picked up the Best Actor award for his role in the production - fumed: "Keep my wife's name out of your f***ing mouth."

Chris tried to not let the moment throw him off as he continued to laugh, and then said: "Wow, Will Smith just smacked the s**t out of me."

After the shocking ordeal, fellow A-listers reached out to Will and Jada, including Denzel Washington, Bradley Cooper, Queen Latifah, and P Diddy.

P Diddy - whose real name is Sean Combs - tried to mediate between the pair once the livestream of the annual awards bash resumed. He said: "Will and Chris, we’re going to solve this – but right now we’re moving on with love."

While some viewers thought the ordeal was a prank, Vanity Fair executive editor, Ramin Setoodeh, who was live tweeting from the red carpet, insisted it was not part of rehearsals.

The tweet read: " It was not supposed to happen. It was real."

Later in the evening Will came out to apologise, as he picked up the Best Actor title for his role in King Richard.

He said: "I want to apologise to the Academy, I want to apologise to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment.'

'Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family. In this time in my life, in this moment I am overwhelmed by what God is calling on me to do."

All eyes were on the Oscars 2022 red carpet this evening, as it returned to its former glory after two years of restricted guest lists and paired-back ceremonies.

Having been hosted both indoors and outdoors at Union Station last year, the awards, hosted on 27 March by trio Regina Hall, Wanda Skyes, and Amy Schumer, returned to the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

While we wait to find out who will win the most coveted statuettes - and take home the $76k goodie bags - we're taking a look at the red carpet arrivals, and boy are they epic.

Oscars red carpet 2022 trends

Black might be considered a safe option, but not so on this red carpet. The likes of Vanessa Hudgens, Laverne Cox and Kourtney Kardashian proved that black gowns can be daring, sexy and just just a little bit rock'n'roll.

The glitter brigade was out in force, with Jessica Chastain and Lupita Nyong'o leading the way in head-to-toe sequins. Best actress nominee Jessica opted for an ombre gold and lilac Gucci gown, while Lupita paid homage to the golden statuette in a gold dress. Special shout-out to Zendaya and her cropped white shirt with silver skirt combo.

Now they say you shouldn't wear red on a red carpet, but I disagree. As Tracee Ellis Ross, Ariane DeBose, Kirsten Dunst and Marlee Matlin can attest, you can truly stand out in scarlet gowns.

Pale hues were de rigueur also, with Mila Kunis, Lily James, Zoë Kravitz and Lady Gaga all plumping for pastel pinks and yellows.

Suits and separates were also a big trend on the night, with Kristen Stewart showing off her pinks in a short Chanel suit, and Uma Thurman looking chic in a white shirt and black satin trousers.

It wouldn't be an Oscars red carpet without a political statement, and stars such as Jamie Lee Curtis showed their support for Ukrainian refugees by wearing blue ribbons.

Will it still go ahead?

The 2022 Oscars, also known as the Academy Awards, are set to take place on 27 March, but will air in the UK on 28 March.

However, there are growing fears it may not go ahead after three host-less ceremonies, and celebrity guests, nominees, and presenters will be unable to attend due to COVID-19 scares.

The Sun Online has reported numerous A-listers have contracted coronavirus, and those who have tested positive prior to the annual awards ceremony will not be attending the red carpet bash.

It has been reported half of those nominated for the Best Picture film are battling coronavirus just days ahead of the Oscars, which will take place at The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, and was rumoured to see Selena Gomez host the bash.

It has been reported the panic surrounding COVID-19 has been coined the "swab sweat", as all attendees are required to undertake two mandatory PCR tests 48 hours ahead of the event, and nervously await the result.

An insider from United Talent Agency said: "Everyone is dealing with swab sweat.

"You get your nose swabbed and then you are sweating on whether the email will land showing you are positive. It is a really anxious time for major stars and nominees especially, knowing this may be their only chance of glory.

"All the events are asking for testing to show LA authorities they are following guidelines and adhering to the ongoing union-agreed coronavirus measures around live broadcasts.

"The socialising at events all week is obviously a major part of the celebrations, but there is a fear that anyone could innocently pick up Covid simply by mixing with an infected person."

Currently Belfast director and nominee, Sir Kenneth Branagh, is in isolation in LA after he tested positive for COVID-19, and it is feared fellow big names due to attend the ceremony, including Lady Gaga, Dame Judi Dench, Beyonce, Billie Eilish, and many more could be forced to pull out if they were to be struck down with the virus.

The strict testing is also in place for other events, including after parties held by celebrities, who are also requiring antigen tests before arrival.

This comes as a new COVID variant, BA-2 subvariant, has been detected and is said to spread 80% faster than Omicron, and the dominant variant has seen cases rise in the US in recent days.

LA health authorities and event organisers have urged for a stricter policy and safety measures to be put in place to slow the spread of the virus. As a result, masks are still mandatory indoors at hotels, bars and indoors spaces, by guests and staff, including serving staff at the Oscars.

Pete Davidson was rumoured to helm the hotly anticipated 94th Annual Academy Awards.

However, Variety has reported the 28-year-old comedian has not been chosen to present the awards ceremony because of a clash with his work commitments.

Now, there is growing speculation singer Selena Gomez, 29, could be in talks to present this year's gig, alongside her Only Murders In The Building co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short. And we are all for this decision!

Davidson - who is currently dating Kim Kardashian - is said to have had an "informal conversation" with Pete's team and producers about the possibility of hosting the ceremony.

But it is reportedly "highly unlikely" Pete will present the segment because of his affiliation with NBC, which is the rival network to ABC who air the Oscars.

The Lose You To Love Me hitmaker is believed to be a preferred host, as there is hope the 29-year-old singer and actor will bring in a young audience, but also because Selena, Steve and Martin are an "iconic trio".

Speaking about the possible host, Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment president, Craig Erwich, said: "I mean, they are an iconic trio.

'They have mass appeal. Everybody loves them. They’d be a dream. That said, there’s a lot of incredible talent we’re considering. We’re having ongoing conversations with Will and the Academy about it."

If Selena, Steve and Martin present the prestigious bash, it would mark the fourth time the Father of the Bride actor has hosted the Academy Awards.

Steve, 76, has presented the Annual Academy Awards solo in 2001 and 2003, as well as with Alec Baldwin in 2010. Could it be fourth time lucky?

This year's Oscars is set to take place on March 27, 2022, and will air on ABC.

However, Selena, Martin, Steve, as well as ABC have yet to confirm any details about the hosts, so stay tuned for all the details.

Remember, it’s not about you ‘An acceptance speech is the winner’s moment to thank all the people who have put them there. While it’s good to show emotion, breaking down completely is a little self-indulgent – focus instead on the people you’re meant to be thanking.’

Hook them with a great opener ‘One of the reasons I loved Robin Williams’s Oscars acceptance speech in 1998 for Good Will Hunting was the opener. “This might be the one time I’m speechless,” he joked, which worked well for him because he was normally so outgoing.’

Use the power of three ‘Matthew McConaughey opened his 2014 Best Actor speech with “thank you, thank you, thank you” and ended it with “all right, all right, all right.” It’s a powerful technique that helps your message sink in with the audience.’

Avoid ‘paper’ thank yous ‘I’ve watched Oscar speeches where the winner has pulled out a piece of paper at the point where they want to make a long list of thank yous. It’s a bit of a downer for the people being thanked as it implies the winner doesn’t remember who they are! If you must use notes, use them all the way through or not at all.’

Make it personal ‘It’s always good to add something thoughtful into each thank you, as Meryl Streep did in 2012 when she thanked J. Roy Helland, the hairstylist and make-up artist who had worked with her on every one of her movies since Sophie’s Choice.’

Finish on a high ‘Sandra Bullock’s 2010 Best Actress speech was a great one as she talked about trailblazers at the beginning and then brought the message home that women and mothers everywhere are trailblazers. It showed that even in a minute-long speech you can still have a really powerful ending.’

If the music starts... ‘It’s best to say “that’s my cue!” and get off stage. The funny exception is Julia Roberts, with her line to the orchestra conductor when she won Best Actress for Erin Brockovich in 2001: “Sir, you’re doing a great job but you’re so quick with that stick. So why don’t you sit cos I may never be here again!”’

Spelling it out

Emma Watson recently announced her plan to bring the #TimesUp movement to the UK. And at the Vanity Fair Oscars party on Sunday night, she spelled out this mission with a brand new Time's Up tattoo.

It's not clear whether the tatt is a permanent or temporary one, but the lettering was clearly visible on Watson's right forearm as she posed for cameras outside the party in a sleeveless Ralph Lauren dress.

Watson was one of many prominent British celebrities to sign a letter ahead of the BAFTAs calling for a #TimesUp justice fund to protect women from sexual harassment and discrimination.

'We invite you to join us in donating to the new UK justice and equality fund' went the letter published in The Guardian, 'to spread the word to others and be a catalyst for change. Everyone can make a difference by using your platform, your voice and your power as a changemaker.'

To kick off the fundraising drive, Watson personally donated £1 million to the cause.

Daniel Kaluuya is being praised on social media for his calm and articulate response to a reporter's comment about Get Out.

During red carpet interviews at the Oscars on Sunday night, a journalist from Sky stated that the film’s racial themes 'tick a lot of boxes in some ways.'

The star, who won Rising Star at this year’s BAFTAs, took the opportunity to explain what's wrong with this notion.

'We’re not boxes, though. Articulating the black experience isn’t a box. We’re articulating our truth. We’re human beings,' he said.

Twitter didn't take very long to pick up on the moment, praising Daniel for his handling of the conversation.

'Daniel Kaluuya is wearing a flawless tuxedo, but just gave an even more note-perfect interview in the face of questioning that it would be charitable to call clumsy. A genuine star, class act,' one tweet read.

'Fair play to Daniel Kaluuya on this intelligent, impassioned response,' said another tweet.

'Daniel Kaluuya shutting down sky’s interviewer was the best thing i’ve seen all night,' another added.

The actor, whose role in Get Out got him his very first Oscar nomination, also stars in Black Panther.

Jennifer Lawrence was on top form at the Oscars this year.

Hollywood's elite stepped out for Sunday night's 90th Annual Academy Awards, in a celebration of the very best in film. Of course, the A-list guests put their best foot forward on the Oscars red carpet, but J-Law's BFF moments with fellow actress Emma Stone didn't go unnoticed by viewers either.

Poking fun at her friend, Jennifer clearly couldn't pass up the opportunity for some laughs when host Jimmy Kimmel made a funny about last year's now-famous Best Picture gaffe. You may remember that La La Land was mistakenly announced as the winner.

'This year, when you hear your name called, don't get up right away... Give us a minute,' he told the audience and, of course, the camera honed in on Emma's reaction.

Jennifer was also caught on film, pointing and laughing at her gal pal.

Viewers spotted the moment and wasted very little time in taking to social media to talk about it.

'#JenniferLawrence & #EmmaStone's friendship is already a highlight of the Oscars,' one wrote.

'Enjoying Jennifer Lawrence sat next to Emma Stone. Would like to be sat on that row plz,' another added.

'I stopped writing this movie about twenty times because I thought it wasn't going to work'

Huge congrats to Jordan Peele, who just became the first black nominee to win Best Original Screenplay for his directorial debut, Get Out.

But, as Peele told the audience at the Dolby Theatre when he went up to accept his award, his groundbreaking film very nearly didn't happen.

'I stopped writing this movie about twenty times because I thought it wasn't going to work' said Peele. 'I thought it was impossible. I thought no-one would ever make this movie. But I kept coming back to it because I knew that if people let me make this movie then people would hear and see it. I want to dedicate this to everyone who raised my voice, and let me make [it].'

Peele's history-making win was celebrated on social media by celebrities and Get Out fans alike. 'My first jump of the night!!! So happy for Get Out!!!' tweeted Chrissy Teigen.

Ahead of the show, Peele was also sent a good luck message by Oprah Winfrey. 'Jordan, I’m so proud of you and what you’ve done to build EMPATHY by using story as a “weapon for change.” We’re all rooting for you tonight!' she wrote.

After collecting his award Peele reacted to the post-win press room with a Get Out reference:

The actress was awarded for her performance in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. And everyone is talking about her speech...

Frances McDormand was given the gong for best actress at the Oscars, for her role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

The 60-year-old came out on top in a very strong category, which included Meryl Streep, Margot Robbie and Lady Bird star Saoirse Ronan. But she wasn't about to let the moment pass without sharing it with her comrades.

Taking to the stage to accept her award, McDormand made a point of giving a kickass speech.

Telling the audience that she had 'some things to say,' Frances highlighted the need to tell more female stories.

'Look around, ladies and gentleman, because we all have stories to tell and projects we need financed,' she said. 'Don't talk to us about it at the parties tonight. Invite us into your offices... and we’ll tell you all about them.'

'If I may be so honoured to have all the female nominees in every category stand with me in this room tonight,' she said. 'Meryl if you do it everybody else will...'

Of course, Meryl Streep obliged.

She ended her impassioned moment with two words: 'Inclusion rider.'

According to Dr. Philip Goff, President of The Center for Policing Equity, an inclusion rider is 'a clause in an actor’s contract that requires the cast and crew be diverse in order to retain the actor.'

Talk about a stand-out moment.

We could totally see a rainbow at the Oscars last night...

Now that all of those acting prizes have been handed out, it’s time for the second most important awards ceremony of Oscars night – the best dressed list.

Yes from Alicia Vikander’s oh so Belle bubble hem, to Jennifer Lawrence’s barely there lace look, there were so many fashion talking points on the red carpet - and you can bet your Dior that the high street will be following suit, very, very soon.

Here are the looks that everyone is talking about from the Oscars 2016...

Call It Spring Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander, Emily Blunt, Heidi Klum… a whole host of starlets worked frothy dresses in pastel colours on the red carpet last night, declaring the spring fashion season to be officially open. Best Supporting Actress Alicia’s custom Louis Vuitton number was the one that divided fashion critics on the night, and takes home our virtual prize for 'biggest style statement' thanks to those silver embellishments and that asymmetric bubble hem.

Forest Green Rachel McAdams looked slinky in an emerald August Getty halter, putting rich greens on our red carpet colour radar. Our best dressed of the whole shebang, however, was without doubt Saoirse Ronan, who looked absolutely stunning in her sparkling slip dress by Calvin Klein Collection.

All Black Everything From Kate Winslet’s foil Ralph Lauren confection, to Julianne Moore’s shimmery Chanel drama, a lot of stars chose to wear all-black gowns. Jennifer Lawrence even did the double, starting her night in a degrade Dior couture lace look and hitting the Vanity Fair after party in a slick bralet and slit skirt combo.

Midnight Drama Is it royal blue, is it Cadbury purple? We’re not quite sure, but Brie Larson, Reese Witherspoon and more chose this stand-out colour, all with a hint of a ruffle. Mindy Kaling, we think, nails it in this off-shoulder Elizabeth Kennedy dress.

Blush Up  The hottest hues to be seen in at this year’s Oscars after-party? Reds and pinks, of course. Slip dress silhouettes ruled throughout the evening, but we love Brie Larson's blush velvet goddess gown the most, best accessorised with a little gold man.

Hot Metal They may not have taken home any actual silverware, but this bunch were all style winners in high-shine gowns. Elaborate draping proved key to pulling off this fabric trend - or as our pick of the bunch, Selena Gomez, proves, you can say it with sequins.

Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the finest actors of our time and each performance he gives is totally captivating. But why hasn't this screen god won an Oscar yet? He's been nominated four times, goddamit.

To celebrate the jubilant news that Leonardo DiCaprio has FINALLY won an Oscar, after careful consideration (and hours of watching Leo's back catalogue - it's a tough job, we know), this is why we firmly believe Leonardo DiCaprio should have won an Oscar by now:

1. It had been 20 years coming.

A young Leonardo DiCaprio earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in 1993's 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape' as a mentally disabled teenager called Arnie. If you haven't already seen this movie, Leo, alongside the always-delightful Johnny Depp, is astonishing. Tears will be shed, we assure you. Who won instead? Tommy Lee Jones for The Fugitive - much to Leo's relief, apparently. The star has since said that all he could think about at the time of his first Oscar nomination was how terrifying it would be to have to give an acceptance speech in front of that many people. Bless.

2. He managed to pull off a South African accent.

Leo was nominated for Best Actor in 2006's Blood Diamond, but again was denied the win. We think he should have won (obvs) for his almost flawless South African accent alone. Oh, and for shining a light on the important issue of conflict diamonds, of course.

3. He developed OCD for a role.

When Leo was preparing to star as the obsessive-compulsive billionaire recluse Howard Hughes in The Aviator (for which Leo was nominated for Best Actor), he delved so deep into the world of OCD that he developed the condition himself. He said, at the time: 'I remember my makeup artist and assistant walking me to the set and going, "Oh God, we're going to need ten minutes to get him there because he has to walk back and step on that thing, touch the door and walk in and out again. I let myself do it because I wanted that to come out. I was trying to be that character but it became really bothersome - and it continued way after the filming."' If that's not dedication, we don't know what is. The Oscar went to Jamie Foxx for Ray in the end.

4. If teaming up with Chris Nolan doesn't get you an Oscar nom...

We don't know what will. Inception was mind-boggling and utterly brilliant, but it did nothing for Leo's Oscar chances. The film itself won four Academy Awards but not a one for our Leo.

5. But maybe working with Kate Winslet might do the trick?

No such luck, Leo. The two Titanic stars reunited for Revolutionary Road in 2008 but even their incredible on-screen chemistry didn't amount to so much as an Oscar nomination for either of them. Kate did win the Golden Globe for Best Actress, though. Sorry (again), Leo.

6. No love for Leo's Django Unchained.

Both Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Waltz won Oscars for Django Unchained, but Leo? You guessed it, nothing. He was nominated for a Golden Globe, but he lost out to his co-star Christopher Waltz there too. Ouch.

7. Left out in the cold with Titanic.

We know it's not cool to like Titanic, but, boy, how we did. And, we were surprised that the angelic-faced Leo wasn't nominated for an Academy Award. The film itself was up for a staggering 14 gongs and won 11, while both the actresses who played Rose - Kate Winlset and Gloria Stuart - were nominated.

8. We thought 2014 would have been his year...

Those of you who have seen Wolf of Wall Street will surely be in agreement that that should have been Leo's Oscar year. The actor gives a relentless performance as Jordan Belfort in Scorsese's three-hour rollarcoaster of debauchery. On learning of his Oscar nomination for Best Actor, Leo said: 'I am deeply humbled by this honour. The Wolf of Wall Street has been a passion project of mine, and I found the role to be one of the most challenging and rewarding of my career. Congratulations to all of my fellow nominees and thank you to the Academy for this extraordinary recognition.' In the end, the Oscar went to Matthew McConaughey for his brilliant work in Dallas Buyers Club.

Leo, you were robbed.

9. If he can fight a bear, surely he can win the fight for the Oscar

Now let’s talk about Leo in The Revenant. Seeing that it’s clear that delivering astounding performances isn’t placing a little gold man in Leo’s hands, the actor has had to go to extremes. And by ‘extremes’ we mean dicing with death.

For his Oscar-nominated role Leo endured sub-zero temperatures, slept inside animal carcasses, ate a raw bison liver (‘The bad part is the membrane around it. . . . It’s like a balloon. When you bite into it, it bursts in your mouth’), and fought with a bear.

What more could the Academy want? If he doesn’t win an Oscar this year, we can only assume that the Academy wants him to move into the freezing Canadian wilderness and fend for himself for the rest of his days, while crying out: ‘Julieeettt.’

10. We can’t deal with anymore faces like this:

If you were nominated for one of the most famous prizes in the world, how exactly do you think you would react? As this year’s Oscar nominations were announced yesterday, the chosen ones (from Leonardo DiCaprio to Jennifer Lawrence) have been expressing their joy in all kinds of ways.

These are the best reactions and statements from the stars so far. ‘Holy shit!’ indeed, Brie Larson…

Leonardo DiCaprio, up for Best Actor in The Revenant takes a humble approach, thanking the cast and crew who worked with him; ‘Making The Revenant was one of the most rewarding and collaborative experiences of my life,’ he says in a statement. ‘None of this would have been possible without Alejandro's talent, vision and determination. Our dedicated crew also deserves to share in this moment. Together, they have created a truly unique cinematic experience.’ Very nice Leo.

Lady Gaga, whose song 'Til It Happens to You’ is nominated for Best Original Song, uses her powers for good; ‘This nomination lends a voice to so many victims and their families around the world,’ she writes on Instagram. ‘Thank you to The Academy for recognising the movement of people who have come together around ‘The Hunting Ground’ and ‘Til It Happens To You’ in the name of sexual assault. Diane Warren and I are simply honoured to represent the voices of so many survivors.’

Jennifer Lawrence, up for Best Actress for Joy, says she’s super grateful; ‘I am beyond grateful and humbled by this nomination. I feel incredibly honoured to be recognised among the other amazing women in this category. Joy is an incredibly inspiring story about an ordinary woman who does extraordinary things. For me, working with David O. Russell has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I share this nomination with him as well as our incredible supporting cast. I could not be more proud to be a part of this film and thankful to the producers and Fox for their unyielding support.’

Saoirse Ronan, nominated for Best Actress for Brooklyn, admits to some tears; ‘I was asleep and my mom ran in and she was crying, and so it was either good news or bad news, and it was great news,’ she told Good Morning America. ‘I'm going to start crying now, but to get Best Actress and to get Best Picture means the absolute world to us.’

And then Brie Larson, nominated for Best Actress for Room, loses it completely, and says what all the other nominees were really thinking; ‘I thought, Holy shit! It's that mixed with a total flat line,’ she says in an interview with E! News. ‘I didn't realize how strong my reaction would be. My whole body was shaking. I started crying. It really was when they gave [Lenny Abrahamson] a best director nomination that I really lost it. He's so deserving of it. So well deserved and so exciting to see.’

And then later in an interview with Good Morning America… ‘I'm shaking right now. I'm really confused. It's the highest form of flattery in my field. The nominations mean so much because it comes from your peers, it comes from fellow actors. I was home-schooled and I never really felt like I was part of any group. To be included with people that I respected so much since I was a kid is just absolutely incredible.’

Ever wondered what makes an Oscar winner’s gown so, well, Oscar worthy?

Ever wondered what makes an Oscar winner’s gown so, well, Oscar worthy? Whether there’s a winning formula that only certain stylish actresses know about? Whether there’s a lucky colour or silhouette to be wearing, or if one designer name manages to dress more winners than anyone else?

As the 2016 Oscar nominations are announced, with Cate Blanchett, Saoirse Ronan and Jennifer Lawrence front runners for the coveted Best Actress prize, we’re getting ready to place our bets on who will wear what this awards season.

And now we can make some slightly more educated guesses than before. You see a rather gorgeous infographic, created by the Big Group, allows you to browse sketches of every dress worn by an Academy Award winning Best Actress, sorting styles by date, designer, or colour.

With an overview from 1929 to now, it paints a pretty nice picture of what’s worked, style-wise, for the winners and also is a lovely way to track changes in the fashion silhouette throughout the decades.

So what should this year’s winner go for? Well for the last six years (including last year’s winner Julianne Moore, who’s not yet in the graphic) it’s been all about the hemline. From Sandra Bullock’s 2010 Marchesa confection, to Jennifer Lawrence’s now-iconic 2013 Dior, a light swoosh of volume at the hem has proven to be the mark of a sartorial winner.

Natalie Portman, who won wearing Rodarte in 2011 and Helen Mirren, who wore Lanvin in 2012, both added some goddess draping into their fashion equations, so that, too, could be in the recipe for success.

Throwing it back to some of Hollywood’s original leading ladies, and a sensible skirt suit, often with a contrasting sailor collar, was the look du jour. We love Bette Davis’ Orry-Kelly dress from 1936, and Janet Gaynor’s off-the-rack ensemble from 1929 would have been sooo ahead of its time.

Experimentation was, clearly, everything in the Eighties and from Cher’s winged naked dress, to Jodie Foster’s flared-back, off-the-rack statement, more was definitely more on the red carpet.

As for the designers to watch, Dior is a clear winner having dressed three best actresses over the years, while Armani, Yves Saint Laurent and Givenchy have each dressed two.

A lot of stars (and their stylists) lose sleep over what to wear on the big night – with all the attention on you, it must be kinda like shopping for a wedding dress, non? So, to the next nominees, study our analysis and study it hard. That dress could be a career-maker, don’t cha know?
