Whether you're an early adopter or loyal to your bi-weekly salon appointment, it can't be denied: the bare nail aesthetic is everywhere. First spotted on the Fall/Winter 2026 runways, courtesy of Marc Jacobs and Altuzarra, "barely-there" nails have since got the seal of approval from bonafide nail influencers, Hailey Bieber and Kylie Jenner.

But what if your nails aren't in optimal condition? This is an issue I've run into time and time again. After years of gel manicures and punishing removals, I was left with incredibly damaged nails that were prone to peeling. Even if I wanted to sport the bare nail look, I didn't have the confidence to.

Enter a whole host of polishes dedicated to concealing everything from breakage and discolouration to ridging. Many also contain ingredients designed to help repair nails over time. As celebrity manicurist Ami Streets explains: "A nail concealer is a sheer, treatment style nail product designed to blur imperfections and create a more even and healthy-looking nail appearance."

"Similar to how tinted moisturisers work on skin, they uses subtle pigments to neutralise discolouration while enhancing the natural nail rather than masking the nail. It softly diffuses common concerns such as yellowing, staining, redness, uneven pigmentation and the appearance of ridges. These nail polishes create a more uniform nail tone while still allowing the natural nail to show through, which is why the finish looks so effortless."

The manicurist notes that they're particularly popular among those drawn to the minimalist, "bare nail" aesthetic, as well as anyone caring for their natural nails at home or growing out damage while still wanting their hands to look polished.

If you still love the ritual of going to the salon, but want to tap into the trend, then Vlada Klym at Browchuk Salon recommends opting for a Japanese manicure. "It replenishes the natural nail with minerals and leaves a healthy, glass-like shine," she says. But between appointments, or if you prefer a lick of colour, Klym also recommends supplementing with these sheer polishes—especially those infused with vitamins and hyaluronic acid. I haven't looked back after giving up gel manicures a year ago. While I love the look of preened hands, and the creative side of nail art, bi-weekly salon appointments were setting me back hours each week and hundreds of pounds a month. As it turns out, I'm not alone.

Thick, glossy French manicures held a certain cachet just a few years ago—not unlike small designer goods (and often just as expensive). Recently, however, I’ve noticed a shift towards bare nails, which was echoed on the runway this season. At Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2026 show, nail tech Jin Soon Choi groomed models’ nails to within an inch of their lives, completely sans gel or polish. Similarly, designer Joseph Altuzarra requested no visible colour—instead, nail lead Erica De Los Santos used sheer polishes matched to each model’s skin undertone.

Of course, this isn’t about bare, raggedy-looking nails. Amid the over-saturation of salon-worthy manicures, (which conveniently cover up a multitude of sins) the pendulum has swung back towards perfectly groomed nails as a new status symbol, in the "quiet luxury" ilk. They’re impeccably maintained: meticulous cuticle work, perfectly buffed surfaces and oodles of natural shine. In many ways, they’re harder to achieve than a gel manicure, and, if done “right”, can cost just as much in time and money.

Angela Lei is a beauty journalist turned brand founder of Fette, which sell reusable, hand-painted press-ons for professional-looking results, minus the damage. "Salon gels are starting to feel a little over-engineered, outdated and artificial," she says, pointing out that the bare nail trend has made its way into celebrity circles too. "Instead of heavily embellished sets, there was a nude movement at the Met Gala. Hailey Bieber and Kylie Jenner, both trendsetters in the nail sphere, had nude nails. Kendall Jenner, Irina Shayk and Margot Robbie all had what looked like completely bare, natural nails too."

This has been reflected in Fette's sales, Lei adds: "We're seeing higher sales of subtle French tips, ombré nudes and solid studio colours—there's much less of the intricate, 3D, design-led sets that used to dominate."

Similarly, Donia Chrifi-Alaoui, founder of West London's high-end salon chain, Swanky, tells me she’s recently seen a massive uptick in demand for the Japanese Manicure, despite offering it for the past 15 years. The treatment focuses on improving nail health from the inside out, buffing nutrient and vitamin-rich pastes into the nail plate to leave a soft, natural shine that can last for weeks.

“More women are prioritising nail health now and becoming far more conscious about what goes on and around their bodies,” she explains. “Natural nails have always been chic, but now healthy nails have become aspirational. So many people are asking for our Japanese Manicure because it restores the natural nail rather than covering it up, leaving a clean finish that feels modern and understated.”

Per Lei, this all reflects a broader movement within the online beauty space. "A decade ago, beauty online was often about visible effort and perfection; now people are drawn to things that feel more effortless, healthy and real. It’s less about performance and more about substance and lifestyle."

To me, though, it also suggests that we may be swapping one mode of perfection for another.

Swanky’s Japanese Manicure gave me the best nails of my life, but I won’t be tying it to the same rigid two-week appointment cycle I had with gels. Going forward, I want to define “natural perfection” by my own metrics. As fellow Beauty Editor and longtime bare nail fan, Madeleine Spencer says: "My nails look best when I've been swimming in the sea—they turn into little pink shells that look classic and pretty..." That's something that feels aspirational to me.

Summer is just around the corner, but my feet haven’t quite got the memo. I tend to neglect pedicures during the colder months, and my toes inevitably need a little extra TLC come May.

I find bog-standard pedis rarely cut it here, nor do my trusted balms and salves. And alas, I was wrong to be concerned: after trying Swanky London’s excellent Japanese Pedicure, which features a triple scrub using handmade exfoliants, I emerged with the softest, most groomed feet of my life. Swanky was one of the first salons to start performing the Japanese pedicure, 15 years ago, but the process is now growing in popularity. Curious for the full lowdown? Read more below.

What is a Japanese pedicure?

It starts in a similar way to a traditional pedicure, with nail shaping and gentle cuticle work, but the focus quickly shifts to treatment, explains session manicurist Sophia Stylianou.

As Streets continues, instead of using polish or gel, this method relies on nutrient-rich pastes and powders that typically contain ingredients like keratin, beeswax, silica, oils such as Jojoba and vitamins A and E which are buffed directly into the nail plate using a chamois—a natural leather tool.

This is followed by the application of a fine mineral powder, often known as P.Shine Powder with beeswax, which is an excellent emollient that helps retain moisture and seal in nutrients. The service is typically finished with hydration, such as cuticle oil and moisturising creams, leaving the nails looking polished and glowing without using polish or gel.

Who is the Japanese pedicure good for?

This treatment is particularly effective for those seeking natural shine and genuine nail repair. As the shine comes from the buffing process, rather than surface coating, you're left with a soft, healthy gloss that looks effortless. Plus, all the ingredients are natural, meaning you're supporting natural growth and function without chemicals or UV exposure.

Streets adds: "Not only does the Japanese manicure impart a groomed aesthetic, it also gives nails a break from the use of electric tools, which are potentially damaging, or nail polish formulas that can stain. How long does a Japanese pedicure last?

The shine typically lasts around two to three weeks. "And because there’s no polish involved, it doesn’t chip," notes Stylianou. "It simply grows out while the nail continues to benefit from the treatment."

There's a reason walking out of a nail salon feels disproportionately good. Whether you've gone for a classic pillarbox red or a milky, understated oval, a fresh manicure has a way of making everything feel slightly more together. But, really, a great manicure is only as good as the nail underneath it.

As we get older, our nails change—they dry out more easily, grow more slowly, and often develop ridges along the nail plate. It's common, it's normal, and the instinct to buff them away is one worth resisting. But over-buffing thins the nail and makes things worse in the long run. The good news is there are smarter ways to deal with them—treatments that actually address what's going on and polishes that disguise while they get to work. We asked the experts to break it down.

What causes nail ridges?

Not all ridges are created equal—and knowing the difference between vertical and horizontal is the first step to understanding what your nails are trying to tell you.

Vertical ridges, which run from the cuticle to the free edge, are by far the most common. "They're most often linked to natural ageing (similar to fine lines in the skin), dehydration of the nail plate, repeated micro-trauma from over-filing, and occasionally minor nutrient gaps such as low iron or B vitamins," explains nail expert Ami Streets. Manucurist founder Gaëlle Lebrat Personnaz adds that lifestyle factors play a significant role too: "Repeated exposure to water, harsh chemicals, aggressive filing or regular gel manicures and acetone removals all weaken the nail plate over time."

Horizontal ridges, however, are a different conversation entirely. "These deeper grooves run across the nail and usually signal that nail growth was briefly interrupted," says nail technician Faye Louise Dennis. "This can happen after illness, or even periods of intense physical or emotional stress." Think of them less as a cosmetic concern and more as a record of what your body has been through.

Whichever direction your ridges run, the underlying culprits tend to overlap. "Stress, dehydration, nutritional deficiencies, repeated contact with water or harsh detergents, and overuse of traditional gels can all contribute to ridged, fragile nails," says Lebrat Personnaz. "We also see a lot of damage caused by repeated acetone removals and mechanical drills—both of which strip away the nail's natural protective oils and weaken the keratin structure." Your nails, it turns out, are more resilient than they look—but only if you treat them that way.

How do you treat nail ridges?

Ridges can't be completely removed—but their appearance can be significantly softened, both instantly and over time. The mistake most people make? Going straight for the buffer. "The key is gentle, consistent care," says Lebrat Personnaz. "Over-buffing the nail might temporarily smooth the surface, but it often weakens the nail even more in the long run."

Instead, the focus should be on hydration and strengthening. Dennis agrees and has a non-negotiable starting point for every client: "The number one thing I tell everyone is to apply cuticle oil twice a day. A dehydrated nail plate will always look more rigid."

From there, it's about building a solid foundation. Dennis recommends anchoring every manicure in a quality treatment base coat—one that conditions rather than simply fills. Beyond that, nourishing hand creams containing glycerin, urea or ceramides will help maintain moisture levels in the surrounding skin and nail plate. And it's worth being mindful of how often you're reaching for harsh removers or booking in gel and acrylic enhancements, as repeated chemical exposure can exacerbate the problem over time.

For those who want a more targeted approach, a dedicated routine can make a real difference. "At Manucurist, we created the Ultimate Nail Ridges Routine specifically for this," says Lebrat Personnaz. The through-line, as Streets puts it, is consistency. Ridges respond slowly—but they do respond. "Hydration tends to make the biggest visible difference," she says. "It's not dramatic or instant, but done daily, it genuinely changes the texture of the nail over time."

What should you look out for in a nail polish when it comes to treating ridges?

"The best nail polish choices for ridged nails are those that help smooth and visually even out the surface," explains Streets. "Ridge-filling base coats, slightly thicker or plumping formulas, as well as gel-effect polishes with self-levelling properties are perfect for this."

As for what to avoid, Streets advises against using super-thin or watery polish formulas as they tend to settle into ridges, making them more visible. "Matte finishes can also emphasise unevenness, and some metallic, chrome & iridescent polishes reflect light in a way that highlights every imperfection," she adds.

The other thing to avoid is repeated harsh removals, such as those with acetone or drill files. "I would avoid harsh formulas containing sensitising acrylate monomers, as well as repeated acetone removals and aggressive filing, which can worsen ridges and nail fragility over time," says Lebrat Personnaz.

When it comes to colours, Dennis recommends something with coverage as sheer tones can show the texture more clearly. "Dusty pinks, like BioSculpture Savannah Dusk, naturally sit beautifully on the nail regardless of texture. Berry shades are another brilliant option—rich, saturated and opaque, the depth of colour just does all the work for you," she says.

As someone who is both short on time and hates having bare nails, fast-drying nail polishes make up the bulk of my home manicure collection. Best fast-drying nail polishes, tried & tested

I don't know about you, but when I visit the nail salon for a manicure, I'm not thinking about the environmental impact. And neither was Tiger Taylor, before lockdown hit. Unable to get to the salon for her regular acrylics appointment, she became a press-on devotee. It was only then that she started to think about the implications these little nails had on the planet.

"I couldn't get over the trail of little pieces of plastic that followed me everywhere I went," she says. "The fact that I would use them once and then throw them away, the flimsy packaging, the cheap quality of the nails and the toxic chemicals used to apply them; it all made me realise how toxic and wasteful the available options were."

She started looking into the implications of disposable nails and found that each year in the UK, millions of acrylic and press-on nails end up in landfill. And because they're made from non-biodegradable plastics, they remain there.

Sustainability within the beauty industry is a hot topic and an ongoing challenge. According to the British Beauty Council, they estimate that 95% of cosmetic packaging is thrown away, with 14% of that making it to a recycling plant and only 9% actually being recycled. Taylor's findings during her initial research phase were similar. "The beauty industry in the UK annually produces over 120,000 tonnes of nail and beauty-related waste alone, and most artificial nails cannot be recycled due to mixed materials, chemical adhesives and the fact that they are under 5cm in size. Acrylic nails can take hundreds of years to break down, and during removal, they produce microplastics and chemical residues. With an estimated 13 million regular artificial nail users in the UK, the cumulative environmental impact is significant."

She began a journey to find a more eco-friendly solution. She started looking at recycled plastic options, but quickly realised that this wasn't going to solve the plastic waste problem. "It took me two years of research to finally source the right method for producing biodegradable nails."

As a result, Claws was born...

Claws by Tiger Taylor is a sustainable and fully biodegradable press-on nail brand that hopes to reduce long-term plastic waste in the nail industry.

When disposed of, the bioplastic casing to the nails themselves breaks down within five years. Unlike other bioplastics on the market, Claws is made from a formula that will not break down into microplastics but will break down into biomass that can be safely consumed by microorganisms in the soil.

Each element has been considered. "I designed a case that was portable, roughly the size of an iPhone, and can be used as a tray to apply your nails on the go," she says. " I wanted the case to have longevity, for the customer to buy a kit and then add to it with refills of other colours." The idea is that you reuse your case, but when you are finally ready to throw it away, it can be recycled with your dry waste.

Currently, the brand only offers the standard coffin shape, which is customisable. The plastic is so thin and malleable that Taylor says it's really easy to clip and file down to whatever shape and length that you prefer, and gives a much more natural look.

The nails had previously been manufactured in Brazil; she has just moved operations over to the UK, and with that move, the brand is working on a new, shorter nail shape to add to the collection.

Tiger Taylor's top tips for wearing press-on nails:

"I’ve worn them in the sea, in saunas and steam rooms, even boxing, if they are cut down so my hands fit in my gloves! My longest set of Claws lasted for over two and a half weeks whilst on holiday in Ibiza, swimming in the sea, multiple showers and a few nights out..."

• It's all about the prep—think about the work and time that goes into prepping your nails in the salon, do the same at home. Trim your cuticles, buff your nails, remove excess oils with the alcohol wipe.
• Choose the correct size sticky tab for your nails. Apply them to the nail and then hold each nail down for around 30 seconds.
• Avoid getting your hands wet for the first two hours after you apply your nails, and they'll stay sturdy.

If it feels like we’ve been in our “minimal manicure” era for a while now, that’s because we have. Milky finishes, sheer pinks and high-gloss neutrals have dominated for seasons—less a trend, more a new baseline.

For Spring 2026, that aesthetic isn’t going anywhere. Instead, it’s being refined. “It’s no longer about stripping things back completely, but about making lighter, fresher, more intentional choices,” says Emma Forrest, Founder and CEO of Buff..

Think of it as a shift in mindset rather than style. “The nail landscape has evolved—it’s becoming less about transformation and more about refinement,” Forrest adds. “A return to nails that look like your own, just better.”

The result is a focus on renewal, ease and effortless play: think healthy nails, softer colour palettes and nail art that feel fun yet polished, rather than loud or overtly styled.

That doesn’t mean creativity is off the table—far from it. These are the nine spring manicures proving that even the most understated trends can still feel fresh.

1. Pastel blues

Pastels always make an appearance this time of year, but in 2026, there's a set colour scheme which revolves around two main characters (more on the second later). The first is a pretty pastel blue, which Lynn Mason, in-house nail expert at Mavala, says will be "delicate" and "softer" than winter's darker blues. The brand's shade 'Blue Siesta' is bang on. Keep it simple with all-over colour or indulge in some nail art; either way, enjoy blue this season.

2. Tiny nail art

Is there anything cuter than nail art? YES... tiny nail art. We're seeing mini fruits, perfect little polka dots and other micro-details take centre stage for Spring. For Juanita Huber-Millet, Founder and CEO of Townhouse, this is all part of what she calls the 'minimal design with subtle detail' trend: “Minimal nail design remains key, but it’s evolving through texture, placement and finish. Instead of bold patterns, we’re seeing clients opt for fine details... It’s about creating something that feels considered and individual, without overwhelming the nail.” Nail stickers are golden for this type of nail art, but if you're handy with a nail dotter and brush, consider this permission to go wild!

3. Butter yellows

Butter yellow shone in 2025, and we're not done with it yet. The other trending pastel for spring this year, Mason says that "butter yellow, which was hugely popular last year, is set to remain a favourite" all throughout 2026. This time, though, it's accompanied by minimalistic nail art to give it a point of difference.

4. Hot flames

A personal favourite I've added in, flames have long been my go-to nail art. But where I used to go for hot pinks and daring shimmers, now I stick to a more sophisticated white. The perfect modern alternative to a French manicure, I keep coming back to these and think they're absolutely perfect for Spring.

5. Sun-washed tones

“For spring 2026, colour is becoming softer and more nuanced - think peach tones, creamy whites and diffused pastels rather than anything overly bright," notes Huber-Millet, who is looking at 'soft, sun-warmed' colours this season. "[In-salon], we’re seeing strong demand for shades like Peach Crème, Coconut Milk and Blueberry Milk, which feel warm, light and very wearable," she continues. "These tones have a slightly sun-washed quality to them, which makes them feel modern and easy to incorporate into everyday looks.”

6. Milky neutrals

Less a new trend and more a continuation of a dearly beloved one, experts agree milky hues are still having their moment. "“One of the strongest trends is the continued rise of milky neutrals and sheer, ‘your-nails-but-better’ shades. These colours feel clean, effortless and incredibly wearable, which is why they’re becoming staples in our salons," explains Huber-Millet.

But if you're a little over simple white tones, Forrest says there's something here for you anyway: "Milky tones are a standout for spring, but not in the traditional white shades you’d think of. Instead, sheer washes of colour like lavender, peach, pistachio, pale yellows and soft blue are taking over."

She continues: "These tones create a diffused, almost blurred finish that feels fresh, clean and elevated. Soft and spring like as we emerge from winter. Basically they offer colour, without the commitment of full opacity."

7. Micro-florals

Time and time again, we see florals for Spring. But this year, says Forrest, they're a little different – or as she describes, more "restrained."

"Instead of bold prints or full coverage designs, we’re seeing delicate, almost incidental placement. Micro florals, soft colour palettes, and negative space allow the natural nail to remain part of the look. The result feels more like added detail than overall decoration."

8. Soft geometry

Another way to wear your nail art this Spring? Geometric designs, says Forrest. "Geometric nail art is evolving into something softer and more wearable," she explains. "We see harsh lines and high contrast giving way to curves, asymmetry, and tonal colour blocking. The overall effect is modern but understated, designed to complement rather than dominate and be a loud, bold statement feature." There are so many ways you can nail (no pun intended) this look, from soft plaid to small squares.

9. Short nails

After years of bold long nails that made a statement, short designs are rightfully returning for their moment in the spotlight. "Rather than being seen as a fallback, shorter lengths are now a deliberate choice, offering better durability and longevity," notes Forrest. And the best news? You can wear them a number of ways! "Shapes like squoval and soft square create a clean, resilient silhouette that hold up to everyday wear."

This is a look, she explains, that's "practical, but elevated and intentional," and that was spotted across the 2026 Oscars and Grammys red carpets, where "lots of women were wearing short, neutral, barely-there looks."

It's been a while since we've spotted a nail trend that we consider truly noteworthy. Over the winter, we stuck to classic shades, like burgundy, chocolate brown and pillarbox red, but, as we start to embrace all that spring has to offer, something a little more playful has caught our eye: watercolour nails.

This sheer, subtle hint of colour look with a high-shine finish is the clean girl's take on a colourful manicure.

We sat down with Session Manicurist, Ami Streets, to find out how to get the look.

What are watercolour nails?

The key to this look is a diffused wash of colour. "The finish is really sheer and glossy, with colour that fades and blends out like watercolour paint; nothing harsh, nothing blocky," she explains. She says it isn't a far cry from previous nail trends—jelly, syrup and glass nails—but watercolour nails are more fluid artistic, "with tones that gently merge into each other." Much like the traditional clean girl manicure, this fresh and translucent approach keeps to the 'your nails, but better' feel and looks effortlessly expensive.

What to ask for in the nail salon

"Keep it really visual with inspo images when explaining this to a nail tech," says Streets. "You can ask for a sheer, watercolour effect with no block opaque colours." She says that it can help to ask for syrup gels, jelly gels or polish. Another top tip is that some salons offer airbrushing blending, which offers a much softer finish.

"The main thing to emphasise is that you still want to see your natural nail through it which is what keeps it looking elevated and expensive rather than overdone."

Is this a look that can be achieved at home?

Thankfully, yes. Streets says that to recreate this look at home, you need to start with a really clean base, because you can't hide anything with this look. "Go in with a sheer base colour like a milky pink, nude, or even clear," she recommends. "From there, take one or two sheer shades and float the colour gently with the brush. The key is to keep the layers really thin and build slowly so you maintain that see-through, diffused effect." Finish with a really glossy top coat to create that glassy, almost wet-look finish.

Streets' top tip if you don't have any sheer, jelly-like polishes is to mix a drop of your chosen colour into a clear polish.

Which shades work best for watercolour nails?

You'll notice that the most commonly used colours are soft and muted. "Luxury neutrals like sheer pinks, milky whites and peachy nudes always work beautifully for a more elevated, minimal look," Streets says. However, if you want to try something a little more colourful then she says brighter tones like cherry, watermelon, soft coral, lilac and even sheer blue work well too, to give that juicy, glassy finish without feeling heavy.

Streets says that this is a really versatile look that works on all nail lengths and shapes, but that the overall effect will inevitably look a little different depending on your preferences. "On short nails, it looks really clean, minimal and very 'it girl off-duty'", she adds. "Almond or oval shapes enhance that soft, fluid effect the most and tend to be the most flattering for this style. On longer or more square shapes, it reads a bit more editorial and statement. Because the technique is so sheer and adaptable, it can be done on anything from short natural nails to long extensions without losing the effect."

I love a gel manicure. I love the long-lasting, glossy finish, and how polished and perfect I feel when I step out of the salon. But, perhaps even more so, I also love peeling off a gel manicure. It’s a compulsion I can’t seem to kick. An important note on lamps and gels

You might think, like I did, that you can mix and match the brands of your lamp and gel polishes. But you really can't, unless you want to end up in a never-curing, gloopy mess. The thing is, each gel system is engineered with specific photoinitiators, requiring precise wavelengths and light intensities to harden fully, which are built into the corresponding lamp. In other words, if you mismatch brands, your nails might never cure, or if they do, they might not last very long.

Many of us have fallen into the habit of rebooking our gel manicure appointments every two to three weeks. We have a fresh coat applied, then it's removed after a fortnight or so, and before our nails have a moment to breathe, a new colour is reapplied. And whilst the gel polish isn't a problem, if your nails aren't appropriately prepped, you get a bad removal, or pick and peel your gels off, and don't give your nails time to rebalance, this can all lead to damaged nail beds.

This is why over the past year, nail health products, like nail strengtheners and caring cuticle oils, which take a skincare-like approach, have proven increasingly popular.

Our Verdict

Over the years, I have been guilty of prioritising a glorious deep burgundy look over the health of my nails. There were times that I forgot what my natural nail looked like; they so rarely saw the light of day. Those days are in my past, however, I'm still no stranger to the salon, but now I spend more time looking after my nails and feeding them with nourishment.

I used the kit, as directed, between two nail appointments. After having my gels removed, I used the scrub to gently buff the nails. It comes with a doe-foot applicator, which means you don't flood the nail; you're able to apply just the right amount. I noticed immediately how clean my nails looked. It has a sweet, juicy scent and the jojoba beads feel soft rather than gritty.

I was most excited to try the Nail Veil, as I love a sheer pink nail—it's a look that makes me feel groomed no matter what. The first thing I noticed was how quickly it dries, which is probably down to the fact that it's a lot thinner than a typical polish. I have been very vocal about the sorry state of my nail beds. After years of bi-weekly salon appointments and one particularly disastrous set of acrylics, my previously healthy nails were changed for what seemed to be forevermore. They were peeling, brittle and wholly incapable of growing, so to the benefit of them (and my bank account), I cancelled all of my upcoming gel manicures. In fact, it’s been a year and four months since I stepped foot in a salon.

My nails are in a far better place today; they are finally growing, but they still tend to break and peel. As it turns out, I have been making one critical error: using the wrong base coat for my particular nail concerns. This, according to an expert manicurist, had been inadvertently impairing their recovery. My nails weren't weak; they were dry, and by using a strengthening base coat, I was just dehydrating them further.

Celebrity nail tech, Stephanie Staunton, stresses that base coats are “so important”. “Without the correct foundations laid, your polish will chip, peel and stain. Plus, using the correct base can speed up healing, and add days of wear to your manicure."

Best base coat for dry and damaged nails

Dry and damaged nails need a hydrating base over strengthening treatments, contrary to my initial thoughts. Anything keratin or vitamin-based will work best, explains the expert, emphasising that using a daily cuticle oil will also help with reinforcement and repair. “Once damage has recovered, you can also use nail strengtheners as a base.”

Staunton recommends Kure Bazaar’s Protective Base Coat with keratin, calcium and silicium. Another super-nourishing base coat I’ve seen incredible results with is Biosculpture’s Ethos Seaweed Calcium Base.

Best base coat for oily nails

“Oily nails need a base with more grip as polish tends to peel off almost immediately,” explains the manicurist. “Look for a bonder base and wait until it is fully dry and locked in before painting. Apply thinly, and you can use isopropyl alcohol before for extra wear time.”

Best base coat for ridged nails

If you have ridged nails, opt for ridge filler or smoothing bases. “Clients with ridged nails always tell me how conscious of the ridges they are with a colour on,” says Staunton. “So I use a ridge filler base. This makes the polish apply more smoothly and gives a beautiful finish and a confidence boost. “You can also look for a smoothing base—they do the same thing."

If there's one thing I will never give up, it's my monthly manicure. I spent the first two decades of my life biting my nails as much as I physically could, and the only way to keep my anxious habit at bay is to ensure my BIAB is always fresh. However, regular visits to the salon do come at the cost of my nail health. That's why nail health treatments are my saving grace between appointments.

Although I'm often reluctant to give my nails a break, they always come back longer and stronger with some time to breathe. Back to back gels inevitably make my nail beds weaker and my lengths extremely bendy—and prone to peeling.

Deer print nails

1. Prepare the nails by shaping, lightly buffing, and cleansing them.
2. Apply one layer of base coat and allow it to dry completely.
3. Apply two thin layers of a light tan or soft caramel-brown nail polish and let the colour dry completely.
4. Using a thin nail art brush, a toothpick, an orange wood stick, or the rounded tip of a bobby pin, dip into white or off-white nail polish.
5. Place small, irregular dots across the nail, keeping the design airy and uneven for a natural deer-fur effect, and let it fully dry.
6. Apply a top coat to seal and protect the design. Let it dry completely, then finish by applying cuticle oil and hand cream.

Cow print nails

1. Prepare the nails by shaping, buffing, and cleaning them. Apply the base coat as you normally would and allow it to dry completely
2. Apply two thin layers of white nail polish and let the colour dry fully.
3. Using a dotting tool or, if you don’t have one, the flat end of an orange wood stick or a bobby pin, dip into black or brown nail polish.
4. Optional alternative: If you only have a cotton earbud, you can also simply wet the tip and gently twist it between your fingers to smooth down any loose fibres before applying polish - this will allow you to create patches while preventing fibres from sticking
5. Create irregular, natural patches on the nail. Avoid perfect circles or symmetry—cow print looks best when the shapes are uneven.
6. If needed, go over some of the patches with a second layer to build opacity once the first layer has settled.
7. Allow the design to dry completely. Apply a top coat to seal and protect the design.
8. Let it dry fully, then finish with cuticle oil and hand cream for the best finishing touch.

Zebra print nails

1. Nail preparation: shape, buff, and clean your nails, then apply a base coat. Let it dry completely.
2. Apply two thin coats of white polish as the base colour. Let it dry fully.
3. Using a fine nail art brush, or if you don’t have one, a toothpick, the pointed end of an orange stick or a super tiny dotting tool, dip into black nail polish.
4. Draw thin, irregular stripes diagonally or slightly wavy across the nail. Vary the thickness and spacing for a natural zebra look. Make sure the lines are uneven and not perfectly parallel.
5. If a stripe is too thick or uneven, wait for it to dry and carefully touch up with the base color. Optionally, taper some ends with a fine detail brush for a more natural flow.
6. Let the design dry completely.
7. Apply a top coat to seal and protect the stripes. Once the top coat is dry, finish with cuticle oil and hand cream.

"When it comes to animal print nails, the colour combinations I provided in the step-by-step are the closest to the real animals, but there’s no limit to creativity," explains Betka. "You can be very playful with colours and experiment with the size, shape, and spacing of the patterns—there are no rules, so follow your imagination and have fun!"

Valentine's Day is nearly upon us, and there's nothing cuter than celebrating the day with a little nail art. While V-Day-related beauty tends to lean towards the corny, there are a slew of designs that are both minimalist and utterly adorable. Ahead, I consulted renowned manicurists on their favourite understated yet romantic nail looks.

Delicate hearts

"A heart may be an obvious choice, but it’s also the easiest," says expert nail technician Kate Williamson. "If you love a delicate nail, you will love this look. First, paint the nail with a sheer or solid nude shade, using a toothpick and a small brush, and create three points of an upside-down triangle. Use the brush to draw a line between the dots, making a V sign, then slowly fill in the shape to make a heart. A nude nail, red heart, et voila... Or for an alternative coloured heart, black looks super cute."

Themed colours

If hearts aren’t your thing, Williamson continues, she suggests using Valentine's Day-themed colour-ways, à la Hailey Bieber. "A pink coloured nail base with a red French tip and white chrome powder on top creates a super shiny look. It's a quiet nod to the big day."

Heart tips

This is a "really easy design to recreate at home with no need for any special tools," explains nail expert Metta Francis. "Paint your nails in a soft pink of your choice - either a solid pink as shown, or a semi-sheer/subtle pink. Choose your heart tip shade and, using the nail polish brush, paint from one side of the nail to the top. Repeat on the other side and top coat. For this look, I love a deep red or white."

Gothic flowers

"Nail decals are a really easy way to achieve a Valentine's nail look at home, and the opportunities are endless. For a more gothic look, opt for a matte finish and black designs—think black roses and black vintage hearts. Top tip: make sure your base colour of choice is completely dry before applying the nail decals and seal with a plumping top coat. And add a matte top coat to finish."

Whether you’re a maximalist or a minimalist, the nail trends of 2026 are already shaping up to be some of the chicest we’ve seen in years. From clean girl nail illuminators to playful halo manicures, this year is going to be all about glossy finishes, expressive nail art, and twists on popular nail colours that make experimenting with your nails feel fun. But there might be one thing holding you back from partaking in a trip to the salon: nail biting.

Often rooted in stress, anxiety or boredom, nail biting is one of those habits that crops up time and again on lists of common New Year’s resolutions. After all, biting your nails can leave them looking uneven, feeling sore and prone to breakage—not exactly the ideal base for a glass slipper manicure. So, with the new year firmly underway, now might just be the perfect time to break the cycle. Ahead, we asked a nail expert exactly what happens when you bite your nails and how to stop for good.

What damage does nail biting cause?

Far more than just a cosmetic issue, biting can actually have long-term effects on your nail health, and there are several telltale signs. “There are a few consistent patterns of damage when clients are nail biters, the most common being super short or uneven nails, ridges, and weak, peeling or splitting nails as the nail plate becomes damaged,” explains Celebrity Manicurist Ami Streets.

And this trauma doesn’t stop at the nail itself either. “Hangnails and inflamed or swollen cuticles are also common,” says Streets. This can lead to redness and tenderness around the nail itself, which, over time, can compromise the nail’s protective barrier, making your nails more prone to infection and breakage.

Most concerning, though, is the impact on nail growth in future. “Long-term biting can affect the nail matrix, which is the area of skin under the cuticle where the nail is actually made,” explains Streets. “Any damage to this can affect the thickness, length and shape of the nail, and even the direction that your natural nails grow.” In other words, this little habit can change not just how your nails look now but how they might grow in the future, so the longer you bite them, the longer they will take to recover.

How to improve the appearance of bitten nails

Obviously, the best way to look after your nails is to stop biting them, but when that isn’t as simple as it sounds, there are some ways to make bitten nails look healthier and cared for in the short term. “For a quick visual fix, I focus on protection and polish rather than length,” says Streets. Start with some very soft shaping using a glass or a gentle 240 file. “You’re aiming for smooth edges for less risk of chips, tears or temptation to bite,” explains Streets.

Cuticle care is equally important, too. “Rather than cutting them, gently push back and hydrate the cuticles,” advises Streets. Not only will this improve the overall appearance of bitten nails, but it will help to calm any inflammation, too. As for buffing? Smoothing the surface of the nails should be approached with caution. “Only lightly smooth the nail if it can handle it before finishing with a sheer, blurring nail polish shade or gloss to disguise imperfections,” says Streets.

Best products to help you stop biting your nails

While long term cessation of nail biting requires you to examine the underlying cause (after all, it is a stress response) and adopt alternative, healthier coping mechanisms, there are things you can do to curb the urge. For example, builder gels are a great option that will make it literally impossible to bite your nails. Alternatively, there are some brilliant nail polishes that help to discourage nail biting. Manucurist’s Bitter Polish has, as the name suggests, a bitter taste that will repel you from nibbling while the caring keratin-rich formula works to strengthen damaged nails. Similarly, the Mavala Stop formula is a colourless formula with a bitter taste that can be reapplied every two days until the habit is broken.

Regular maintenance can make a huge difference, too, with daily cuticle oil being a non-negotiable. “Hydration supports healthier growth and reduces dryness, which often triggers biting,” explains Streets. “Jessica Phenomen-oil, ORLY Argan Cuticle Oil or Chanel L’huile Camélia are go-tos”.

And once you’ve kicked the habit, treatments like OPI Nail Envy or IBX Repair [a professional-grade strengthener] will provide a physical barrier to protect weak nails as they regrow. Finally, regular manicure maintenance will really help. “By preventing rough edges and reframing progress around nail health rather than length, you’ll keep motivated as you see your nails strengthen over time,” says Streets.

One of the more minor decisions I made in 2025 was taking an extended break from the nail salon. As much as I loved my bi-weekly gel manicures, several rough removals left me with peeling, brittle nails, which were completely incapable of growing, and my nail beds, which were once moon-like spheres, were flattened.

So, I went cold turkey, and today, I'm one year salon-free and counting—with much healthier, stronger nails to show for it. While most manicurists are excellent at keeping your nails in good shape, I felt like I needed to do something drastic, but it wasn't an overnight fix. No, it took me months to find the right products and see any improvement in my nails. Eventually, through trial and error, and bending the ear of some of London's finest manicurists, I managed to curate a nail health kit (and a set of rules to live by) that has transformed my hands. Everything I've learned and my ride-or-die products, ahead.

Gels aren't the enemy, it's removal

As celebrity and session manicurist, Ami Streets, explains, gel manicures themselves aren't the villain—over-filing and improper removal are.

"Aggressive filing and buffing during prep and removal can thin the natural nail and cause peeling, splitting or flaking in addition to sensitivity or soreness around the nail plate or skin," she says. "Excessive use of acetone and alcohol-based products is astringent and dehydrating, which can cause temporary white patches of surface trauma and dry, brittle nails. However, this can be counteracted by gentle professional removal, by using removers with added moisturisers and following up with consistent use of good nail care products."

So, when you're in the salon, gentle prep and proper removal are key; minimal buffing, no aggressive e-filing on the natural nail, and careful soak-off. "Choosing structured gel or infills over repeated full removals can also make a difference in keeping nails healthy long term if your nails are suitable for this service," adds Streets. "Nail care outside the salon is vital too. "Daily cuticle oil is essential—it keeps the nail plate flexible and helps prevent peeling. Always wear gloves for cleaning, avoid using your nails as tools, and never pick or peel your gel!'

Exercise patience when it comes to recovery

If your nails are very damaged, like mine were, recovery can take longer than you think. Mild dehydration can be resolved quickly by using nourishing nail care and treatments, according to the expert, whereas super-thin or severely damaged nails can take anything up to four to six months to fully regrow from cuticle to free edge. "Sensitivities or reactions to gel polish products can also cause semi-permanent damage and allergies, so it’s essential to ensure you’re using reputable products and a great nail tech to look after your natural nail health during and after services."

Hydration and short nails are key

Hydration is essential to fully aid recovery. Streets stresses that your daily non-negotiable should be applying cuticle oil. This is because it penetrates deeper than cream-based products to nourish and nurture your natural nails, promoting strength and growth. Also: "Whilst healing, keep nails short in length and smoothly filed using either a glass or super fine grit nail file of 240."

Look at your diet

Pack your diet with protein. Your nails are literally made of keratin, and eating enough protein helps boost its production—your skin and hair will thank you too. Biotin, magnesium and Omega 3 are also essential for nail growth, so either top up using a supplement, or make sure you're eating plenty of leafy greens, oily fish and seeds. "Adding chia or finely milled flaxseeds to your meals is an easy way to do this," adds Streets.

Know when to take a break from gels

As the expert explains, gel manicures can last up to three weeks—if you're concerned about the state of your natural nails, she recommends keeping this as the maximum timeframe between appointments. You can then have a short break of a week or two to assess your nail health and improve their condition, if needed.

"Breaks are not always necessary if your natural nails feel strong, you’re using structured gel products for growth, and they are applied and removed correctly, in addition to maintaining hydration with daily cuticle oil application. "Remember, if in doubt, always check with your nail tech to check which services are suitable for you."

Use treatment polishes

After a few months, I started to really miss the look of gels—luckily, some excellent treatment polishes on the market scratch that itch. Manicurist's Active Glow and Active Smooth ranges make nails look plump, dewy and healthy—but if you need a pop of colour, you can't go wrong with Kure Bazaar's Le Vernis Serum polish, which combines skincare actives with colour polish.

Know when to consult a professional

"If you’ve taken a long break from the salon and your nails still haven’t recovered, it usually means the issue goes deeper than gel damage alone. Chronic dehydration, past over-filing, repeated daily trauma, or internal factors like hormones or iron levels can all play a role," says Streets. "Focus on cuticle oil, keeping nails short and protected, and avoiding hardeners or aggressive treatments. If there’s no improvement after a few months of gentle care, it’s worth seeing a dermatologist to rule out any underlying issues. Healthy nails are achievable with long-term maintenance and support, and most importantly, consistency with a good routine is the key to results and beautiful nails."

Before I had children, I was a regular at the nail salon; a fresh set of gels every three weeks. But then my life got busy, very busy, and appointments got pushed so far down the priority list that at some point they fell off entirely. Turns out, my nails needed a break; they were in tatters. That's when I fell back in love with regular polish. And whilst I still think that with the right varnish and the correct prep and aftercare, you can get salon-worthy results, I have to admit that I do miss the incredibly plump, glossy and smooth finish that a professional gel manicure delivers.

Over the years, I've been sent several at-home gel kits, but they stayed firmly sealed, gathering dust under my bed. I worried that if I got back into the habit, it would take a toll on my nails again. However, just after Christmas, I received an email with the most beautiful looking at-home gel nail shades—creamy nudes and soft focus pinks—a delicious soap nails palette. After enquiring, I found out that the Mylee colours are from the brand's new Super Pigment Builder Gel range.

Builder gel, for those who don't know, is a gel polish that's cured under a lamp, but it allows for better shaping, lengthening and strengthening of the natural nail.

I was sold, and for the first time, was ready to set up my own little at-home nail salon. I decided to give it a go to see whether it could help me scratch my manicure itch.

First impressions

After years and years of dedicated loyalty to gel manicures, I felt pretty confident with the task at hand. However, I really appreciated the clever and informative packaging of the Mylee Gelt It Done Kit. There's a really handy step-by-step guide, complete with tips to help you nail your technique. The set comes with everything you need, from your top coat, base coat and remover, to the wooden cuticle sticks, white buffing block, and nail file. What I wasn't expecting, but really showed me that this was a set to trust, was that it also comes with a good supply of lint-free wipes and a 2-in-1 nail prep and wipe solution, both crucial to a good mani and exactly what the pros use.

The Super Pigment Builder Gel Polishes were sent to me separately, although the kits do come with four gel polish shades. What sets this collection apart from Mylee's other builder gels is that these are highly pigmented. I was thrilled with the colours, a melange of glossy nudes—Rose Petal, Antique Pink, Rosewood, Terracotta and Soft Coral—a shade for all skin tones. The collection is inspired by the neutral yet statement styles of Japanese and Korean manicures. Essentially, these are punchy and creamy nudes that have a "high-impact finishing usually reserved for colour". From about mid-October to the end of the year, my nails are either burgundy or cherry red, but come January, I want my nails to look as healthy as can be. So I was drawn to these muted, skin-like shades. The ones that instantly called to me were Antique Pink, a rosy nude, and Rose Petal, a bright, pale pink.

The results

I prepped my nails thoroughly, following the instructions to a tee. As is tradition with builder gels, the formula is thick, so when it came to applying the Super Pigment Builder Polish, it took me a little time to work out the best technique. I'll be honest, after I did all 10 fingernails, I still didn't feel like I had a handle on the application. However, after I cured the polish under my lamp, you couldn't tell that I had had a few wobbles. The colour seemed to coat my nail bed perfectly and gave a beautiful, opaque finish.

I like to wear my nails short and round, so I could only test the gels on my nail preference. However, builder gels are known for sculpting overlays and creating a smoothing effect on extensions.

A word on curing time. I found that each layer of polish—top and base coats, as well as the builder gel—needed longer under the lamp than was advised. This might have been down to my application technique, but I felt like they benefited from some extra curing time.

I applied my gels over a week ago and have been so thrilled with the results. Whilst they don't look perfect, some of the edges are slightly frayed here and there, I just know that will improve with practice. The finish is exactly what I wanted. It's glossy, it's plump, it's elegant and, dare I say it, it looks professional.

'Clean girl beauty' has swept across every aspect of our routines, from barely-there makeup to perfumes that smell like freshly laundered sheets. But nowhere has the trend had a greater impact than on our manicures. From micro-French tips to milky polishes and glazed-doughnut manis, every nail trend that surfaces embraces a polished yet seriously understated aesthetic. Now, in what may be its most refined iteration yet, the clean girl nail movement has given rise to a new category of nail product designed to elevate the natural nail with an almost undetectable gloss. Enter: nail illuminators.

“A nail illuminator is a treatment-style product with light-reflecting pigments and subtly coloured micro-pearls, designed to neutralise discolouration and enhance the natural nail,” explains expert manicurist Ami Streets. “It differs from traditional nail polish in that it uses tone-correcting micro-pigments to create a clean, bright, ‘lit-from-within’ effect while keeping the nail line visible, whereas nude or translucent polishes rely on beige or pink pigments to add colour and partially blur imperfections for a more classic polished look.”

Think of a nail illuminator as a cross between a primer and a highlighter, but with added care benefits to support the health and strength of the nail underneath. A prime example is Kure Bazaar’s range of three new Nail Illuminators in Rose, Beige and Blanc. Each is infused with optical micro-brighteners, lemon extract, castor oil and vitamin E to breathe new life into dull, damaged or discoloured nails, while the sheer wash of colour delivers instant polish.

Then there’s Leighton Denny’s new Rose Veil, which lends nails a luminous rosy glow thanks to subtle, shimmering gold undertones. In other words, it’s your nails, but better. “French nude nails will never go out of style, but Rose Veil gives them a fresh upgrade,” says founder and nail pro Leighton Denny MBE. “That gentle golden glow adds a little something extra—making nails look refined, healthy and beautifully elevated.”

Another front-runner is Nails Inc Glowing Somewhere Plant Power Vegan Nail Illuminator, which features iridescent pearls to brighten the nail bed and create the appearance of whiter tips. It is also free from formaldehyde, acetone, parabens and 18 other ingredients that could potentially compromise the integrity of the nail.

While nail illuminators boast intelligent, multitasking formulas, they look their best when paired with well-cared-for nails. “Because illuminators are extremely sheer, meticulous prep is essential for the best result,” explains Streets. “Nails should be cleanly shaped to elevate this minimalist look, lightly refined with a gentle buffer to smooth the surface, and finished with precise cuticle work.”

For application, Streets advises starting with a lightweight clear base, then applying one to two thin coats to achieve your desired effect using a “floating brush technique” (gliding the brush lightly over the nail surface with minimal pressure and allowing the polish to self-level), ensuring full dry time between layers to preserve clarity and glow (“thick coats or heavy bases will dull the effect,” she adds). Finish with a nourishing cuticle oil for healthy hands and nails—perfect for a fresh start to the new year.

I spent the first 20 years of my life as a nail biter. I also spent the first 20 years of my life doing anything I could to break the habit. In the end, acrylic nail extensions were the only thing to save me, and I can finally rely on gel manicures to keep me in check. However, years of salon appointments have left my nails extremely weak and prone to breaking—but it was only when my nail tech mentioned that my nail shape of choice wasn't doing me any favours that I considered the problem might not be the polish.

Nail health products and repairing treatments can do a fantastic job at bringing nails back from the brink, and they've certainly made the world of difference for me. But once my manicures start to grow out and breaks begin to form, I'm back to square one. I had noticed that certain manis lasted better than others on me, but always chalked it up to my lifestyle and how I'd been caring for them. But truthfully, a certain shape made me far more prone to snags—and since I learned that fact, I can confirm that my long, natural nails have remained in tact.

I spoke to Tinu Bello, A-list Manicurist and Senior Mylee Ambassador, about exactly which shape is best suited to those with weaker nails who want to avoid unnecessary breaks. Plus, she gave me some of her top nail care tips for the strongest possible manicure.

Are there certain nail shapes that are more likely to cause breakage?

"Definitely—nail shape can seriously affect how often you’re dealing with breaks or snags," confirms Bello. "Sharp corners and long, pointy tips are often the culprits, because they create pressure points that catch on everything from your clothes to keys. Square and coffin (ballerina) shapes are classic examples of this—straight edges and sharp corners mean more opportunities for a break to start.

"Also, more extreme shapes like stilettos basically concentrate all stress on that tiny point, which can make breakage more common if your nails aren’t reinforced. If you love these kind of styles but find your nails are always weak, consider softer shapes or use strengthening products like the Mylee Builder Gel so your natural nails aren’t taking all the hits," she says.

What is the best nail shape to prevent breakage?

"If we’re talking everyday durability, shapes with rounded edges are your best friend—think round, oval, or squoval (a combo of square + oval). These shapes avoid sharp corners that like to catch on stuff, distributing stress more evenly along the tip. That means you get fewer chips and breaks even on longer nails," says Bello.

"Personally, I often recommend starting with a rounded shape because it’s just so practical—especially if you’re quite active with your hands. If you want a bit more length and style but still want resilience, squoval is that perfect compromise."

Nail care tips to prevent breakage

"To help prevent nail breakage, consistency is key. Keeping your nails well-hydrated makes a huge difference, so applying a cuticle oil daily helps keep nails flexible rather than brittle and so less likely to snap. Filing also matters more than people think; always file gently in one direction with a good-quality file to avoid splitting at the edges.

"It’s also worth protecting your hands where you can—wearing gloves for cleaning or washing up helps prevent nails from weakening due to repeated water and chemical exposure. If your nails tend to be naturally soft or prone to snapping, a strengthening treatment or a light gel overlay, such as using Mylee Builder Gel, can add extra support while they grow. And finally, try to be mindful of how you use your hands—avoiding using nails as tools and resisting the urge to pick or peel products off will go a long way in keeping them strong and break-free," says Bello.

I don't know about you, but my nails are in desperate need of some TLC. Between the festive season, New Year's, and the first doldrum days of January, my pre-holiday manicure has grown out, and I'm hankering for something fun to bring some pep to my step (and my hands).

Sure, there are your typical wintery hues—like burgundy, merlot and chocolate brown—but I prefer something a bit more extravagant to see me through to February. Enter Dua Lipa... In an Instagram post shared a few weeks ago, the singer was pictured kissing her beau Callum Turner, but it wasn't their romance that gave me pause—it was her nails. They were painted a dark red colour, outlined with a thin white line. It's a look I'm dubbing the 'halo manicure', and it's essentially nail art for minimalists.

Celebrity and session manicurist Sophia Stylianou tells me that she's seen increased demand for the style since Lipa's post. "The halo manicure is growing in popularity because it offers a more minimalistic way to update a coloured nail," she explains. "The fine outline creates a soft ‘halo’ around the nail, adding definition without the design feeling heavy or overworked. It feels modern but still very wearable, and works beautifully with different colour combinations depending on how bold or understated you want the look to be."

How to master the halo manicure at home

Of course, you can get the look in the salon, but if you're taking a break from gels like me, the expert explains that it's very straightforward to achieve the 'halo manicure' at home.

• To create a halo manicure, start with neatly prepped nails. File and shape them evenly, then gently push back the cuticles and cleanse the nails to remove any oils or residue.
• Apply one thin coat of base coat and allow it to dry. Follow with two coats of your chosen base shade, making sure the first layer is completely dry before applying the second. This can be anything from a soft neutral to a brighter colour, depending on how bold you want the look to be.
• Once the colour is dry, use a fine nail art or striping brush to trace a thin outline around the edge of the nail in a different shade, following the natural shape of the nail to create the ‘halo’ effect. Apply two coats to the outline, allowing the first to dry before adding the second.
• Finish with a glossy top coat to seal everything in and smooth the design.

Press-on nails are perhaps more popular than they've ever been. With in-salon prices being sky high and worries over gel nail polish ingredients, it makes sense that more of us are returning to the humble press-on.

They're also popular across multiple generations; whilst Millennials and Gen Xers have always been fans, Gen Z and Gen Alpha are all getting on board, often favouring them because of affordability and safety. Many brands have also put in the work to make press-ons more environmentally friendly, using less plastic and more sustainable packaging.

Molly Romah, Lead Nail Technician at Chillhouse, credits several reasons for their rising popularity. "Press-ons are a major time saver; you can go from bare nails to a full, designed set in just 15 minutes, and for a fraction of the cost of a salon appointment," she comments.

With this in mind, it makes sense that there are ample festive designs to choose from. At this time of year, it can be notoriously difficult to secure a nail appointment in the lead up to Christmas, and then between Christmas and New Year, particularly if you don't live in a big city. So if you've missed out, fear not: it's easy to achieve salon-worthy finishes and cute nail art with a simple online order.

As for application and longevity, Romah has the best tips: "It all starts with choosing the right size," she says. "If you fall between sizes, pick the larger one and file the base so it fits more snugly."

She continues: "Buff both your natural nail and the press-on so the glue can grip all the little crevices for a stronger hold. Use a good amount of glue and let it get slightly tacky before adhering the nail."

2025 is nearly over, and with that, my year of nail health comes to an end—or perhaps it's only just getting started. You see, after one too many harsh gel removals, I was left with nails that were peeling, brittle and completely incapable of growing. So I went cold turkey, and swapped salon visits for strengthening treatments and good old-fashioned nail polish.

Thanks to my job, I'm lucky enough to have many of the city's top nail artists on speed-dial, and their advice has been invaluable—particularly their recommendations for what products I should always keep on hand. Yet, if you thought that 2025 was a great year to be a nail lover, I’ve got exciting news for you. Never one to rest on my laurels, I’ve already turned my attention to a new year of nail trends and, trust me, if you thought last year was good, 2026’s nail trends may just be even better.

You see, rather than throwing the blueprints out the window, 2026 promises to build upon many of the nail trends we already know and love, enhancing and elevating them with fresh finishes, luxe tones and refined details. How do I know this? Well, I’ve been lucky enough to sit down with three of the biggest and best nail artists in the business, and of course, there was only one thing I wanted to ask them: "What nail trends will we all be asking for in 2026?"

Thankfully, they didn’t disappoint, revealing that 2026's biggest nail trends are set to have something for everyone. From elegant shades and minimalist finishes to playful textures and even creative takes on nail art, 2026 is set to be a year of nail excellence. To prove it, let me dive deeper into the nine trends they predict we'll see a lot of in 2026. Save this for your next nail appointment to ensure you’re ahead of the curve…

1. Bare Bases

Let’s start with a nail trend that’s all about enhancing our nails rather than concealing them. “For 2026, sheer tints and healthy-looking blurring nudes will be big,” explained celebrity manicurist and ORLY ambassador Queenie Nyugen, “Think pink-beige, peachy, and milky neutrals that enhance the natural nail.”

“Remember bare nails = intentional minimalism, not nothing,” she continued, so don’t say goodbye to nail polish altogether. Instead, opt for lightweight, sheer shades or tinted nail treatments in natural-looking tones for a your-nails-but-better finish.

2. Airy Nudes

Next, sitting in the same shade family as the bare bases we just spoke about, but packing slightly more pigment, are airy or milky nudes. “For 2026, take inspiration from Pantone’s colour of the year 2026 ‘Cloud Dancer,” says manicurist Ami Streets, “With soft, airy, “cloud-like” whites or very light sheer gels that give a subtle, clean finish.”

These soft tones are incredibly wearable and look great year-round, making them ideal for those who don’t want to follow seasonal nail trends. Pair with neat cuticles and a glossy top coat.

3. Buttery Pastels

Each year, as we move into spring, pastel manicures inevitably start to fill our nail inspo boards; however, for 2026, step away from opaque shades and instead opt for creamy tones with a glassy sheen for a fresh take on the trend.

“Gel colours with a subtle sheen feel far more modern than fully opaque finishes,” explained Emelie Sanscartier, nail artist and founder of Gelcare, “For our Gelcare SS26 collection, I’m working on buttery pastels that offer just the right balance: almost opaque, yet still allowing the free edge to gently peek through. This creates an effortless, elevated French-manicure effect that feels understated but luxurious.”

4. Earthy Tones

Much like pastel tones take hold each spring, in the colder months, it’s rich, earthy shades that we all gravitate towards. For 2026, however, Ami predicts we’ll be requesting these moody hues year-round. “I believe we’re going to see lots of chocolate-style browns and oyster-grey with pearlescent undertones,” she told me when I asked her to share her 2026 nail trend predictions. Why? Well, these “elegant shades feel very grown-up chic,” she explained, making them the ideal choice for those who gravitate towards expensive-looking nail colours with a timeless feel.

5. Subtle Shimmer

If you only take note of one nail trend ahead of the new year, it’s that sparkle isn’t just for the festive period. Both Ami and Emilie shared with me that they predict subtle takes on shimmer are going to be huge throughout 2026. For Emilie, “Ultra-fine shimmers combined with pearlescent textures will become a key staple,” while Ami explained that, “Soft pearlescent gels or micro-sheen finishes are the perfect choice for giving nails a gentle glow without being flashy.”

So how do you use them? Well, Ami swears by nail polishes which feature tints of colour along with brightening pigments for nails that “look super healthy and glowing,” while Emilie loves “layering [shimmer polishes] both under and over sheer jelly colours.” Yet, while techniques vary, one thing’s for sure: we’re all going to be asking for soft sparkle nails in 2026.

6. Cat Eye Textures

And it’s not just subtle takes on shimmer that are set to take hold in 2026. Seen on celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Vanessa Hudgens, cat eye nails are still proving hugely popular with Google searches for the trending look doubling towards the end of 2025.

“Magnetic cat-eye effects keep rising because they look dimensional with almost no extra art,” explained Queenie when I asked her why we can’t get enough of the velvet-like look. “For 2026, expect softer 'velvet' halos and diagonal flashes,” she continued, “especially in jewel tones, smoky neutrals, and shifty pastels.”

7. Refined 3D Art

Next up, maximalist nail art lovers may want to look away now because, according to Queenie, in 2026, statement nail art designs are out, and pared-back, micro nail art is in. “This year, 3D nail art goes more refined and micro-scale,” she told me, “Look for subtle raised droplets, tiny pearls, gel-stitched lines, and translucent sculpted accents rather than heavy maximal sets.”

The great thing is, this is a trend that can easily be adapted to suit your personal style. For the minimalists, follow nail artist Iram’s lead with delicate jewel details, while those who prefer more statement looks can still lean into more intricate nail art designs, just keep them to a much smaller scale for a trend-led look.

8. Chrome Details

Chrome nails first shot to cult status as far back as 2022; however, according to Queenie, we're not over them yet. She predicts the mirror finish is still going to play a part in our 2026 manicures, albeit in subtler, more understated interpretations than we’ve opted for in previous years.

“For 2026, chrome shifts from loud mirror to wearable glow,” Queenie told me, “Think sheer pearly overlays and “glazed” tips in champagne, rose-gold, milky lavender, and warm nude chromes.” These shimmery details pair perfectly with the airy nude bases mentioned earlier, or add a soft chrome overlay to an earthy shade to tap into two trends in one.

9. Short Shapes

Lastly, now that we’ve covered trending nail colours and nail art, you may be wondering which nail shape will prove most popular in 2026. Well, it turns out, we’re all going to be returning to short square and squoval shapes to tap into the clean girl look.

“Nail shapes are trending shorter and more practical, with clean squoval and square silhouettes taking the lead,” Emelie told me, “These shapes feel chic, intentional, and easy to maintain, ideal for those embracing polished simplicity while still wanting a trend-forward finish.” To create this shape at home, tools are key, so invest in a high-quality nail file and buffing block for precise shaping and sculpting.

Christmas is just around the corner, and in between ordering last-minute presents, stringing garlands, and hitting repeat on all of the festive hits, many of us are also trying to book beauty treatments for the many social events this season brings. From planning your party outfits and booking blow-dries, one thing I always do to get into the spirit is getting a festive manicure.

This year, I'm extra excited, though, after seeing perhaps the chicest Christmas mani all over my socials. Enter: tartan nails; they're festive, but not too festive—and toe the line perfectly between all-out Xmas vibes and the more understated nails I've been gravitating towards this year.

Session and celebrity manicurist, Sophia Stylianou, confirms that she's been getting requests for the look too. "Tartan nails are trending because they are the perfect mix of cosy, classic and cool," she tells me. "The pattern has that nostalgic, wintery feel, but playing with different colour combinations makes it instantly modern and personal. It’s a great way to add detail and texture without going overly bold, and the layered lines give the design a really chic, tailored look." • Step 1: Shape & prep: "File your nails into your preferred shape and lightly buff the surface. Gently push back cuticles and then cleanse over the nail plate with a small amount of nail polish remover to remove any debris. Apply a layer of base coat, and allow it to dry."
• Step 2: Apply your base colour: "Choose your chosen base shade. Nudes, deep reds, forest greens, or navy all work beautifully. Apply two thin coats and let them dry fully."
• Step 3: Create your grid: "Using a fine detail brush or striping brush, paint your vertical and horizontal lines. Start with your boldest colour first to map out the pattern, keeping the lines thin and slightly spaced. Work slowly and do not overload the brush. "For tartan nails, I love classic combos like deep red, black, white and a touch of gold," explains the manicurist. "This feels festive and timeless. Forest green, navy and white is another favourite, perfect for winter without being too bold. If you want something more neutral, beige, camel and brown tones give a really chic, understated look. For a modern twist, black, grey and silver works beautifully."

Stylianou says: "My go‑to products for this look are a really fine detail or striping brush—that's the key to getting clean, precise lines. For years, every three weeks without fail, I would head to a nail salon for a gel removal and fresh manicure. I flip-flopped between chic spots where they served flat whites or glasses of champagne, to no-frills local places where you're farmed out one by one without so much as a hello. This repetitive routine took its toll on my nails; the removals weren't always gentle or caring, and my nail beds never got a break or a breath of fresh air.

It wasn't until I had two children that I could no longer keep up the habit, and my nails finally got the reset they so desperately needed.

I soon realised that my nails were flourishing with their newfound freedom. That's not to say that I didn't dabble with the occasional gel manicure, but I started relying heavily on regular polish. I developed a tried-and-tested technique and nailed the at-home manicure. I've dabbled with lots of different brands and formulas over the years—I know which ones give the most gel-like finish, which to avoid completely and which one will last the longest without chipping.

Lots of brands promise salon-worthy, long-lasting colour, but we're all too familiar with the fresh polish one day, chips the next day scenario. However, I do believe that I have found a nail varnish range that delivers. As someone who relies solely on polish for her everyday nail looks, what's crucial to me is how hardy and long-wearing it is. Naturally, I put it to the test. On its first outing, I prepped my nails, as I always do, by buffing and filing, then applied two coats of colour. It lasted a full week, which in my experience is pretty good going for a manicure that I've done myself. What I found very interesting is that rather than chipping, the colour seemed to fade around the edges instead.

However, the brand promises a full 14 days when you add a layer of its Flawless Top Coat. I didn't actually have a sample for testing, but I have a plethora of brilliant top coats at home, so I applied one of those instead. What a joy it is to report that it very nearly almost got to the fortnight mark. After 12 days, my nails still looked good, there was slight feathering around the edges, and not every nail looked flawless, but it is without a doubt the longest an at-home manicure has lasted.

I have struggled with my nails for my whole life. Aside from being an avid nail biter for as long as I can remember, my natural nails are extremely weak and bendy. These two factors meant that I turned exclusively to acrylic extensions to achieve the long nails I had wanted. But after learning about the most common nail mistakes that are ruining most of our manis, my natural nails are in better shape than ever.

If there's one thing I've discovered, it's that the smallest habits can make the most difference when it comes to your nails. I've been told by countless nail techs to use cuticle oil and keep up with regular manis, but truthfully I've always doubted how much of a change that could really make. But after speaking to two experts about the easiest nail mistakes to rectify, I'm more convinced than ever that the simplest habits are well worth keeping on top of.

Nourishing nail ranges and cuticle care will go a long way, but I can bet some of these tips won't have crossed your mind before. And with winter in full swing, it's more crucial than ever to be prioritising your nail health.

Common nail mistakes you're probably making

1. Using the wrong nail file

"Most people don’t realise how important the right nail file is for nail health—especially with age as nails become drier, more brittle and prone to damage. Not all nail files are created equal," says Leighton Denny MBE.

Unless you're using a crystal nail file, you should never file back and forth. This is because regular files can create micro tears in your nail, which will lead to damage and breakage. A crystal file, however, means you file back and forth without any problems.

2. Moisturising before a mani

Whether you're doing your nails from home or going to a salon, gel manicures require a little extra forethought. "Even a small amount of lotion or cuticle oil can impact how well the gel bonds," explains Annabelle Taurua, expert at Fresha. "We always recommend that clients come in with clean, dry nails for the best results."

If you do like to use some sort of moisturiser, "apply your hand cream and cuticle oil after your nails are fully cured," she says. It's also worth avoiding creams even when just using regular polish. Dry, clean nails will hold polish best.

3. Neglecting your cuticles

"Winter air can dehydrate your skin and nails," notes Taurua. "Using nourishing cuticle oil daily (except on the day of your appointment) keeps your nails flexible and helps prevent breakage or peeling."

Keeping your cuticles nourished also ensures that any new nail growth you have remains healthy and strong, so it's worth using year-round and in every climate.

4. Not wearing gloves

"It’s important to wear gloves outdoors during cold weather to protect your hands from the harsh winter air, but don’t forget about indoor tasks, too," says Taurua. "Household chores like washing dishes or cleaning can expose your hands to detergents that dry out skin and damage gel polish."

5. Using your nails as tools

This is easily the nail mistake I'm most guilty of, and the one that most frequently causes breakages and tears. Using your nails to tear things open will almost always cause problems, especially if you've grown out your natural nails.

"It’s tempting to open packages or peel off stickers with your nails (especially when wrapping Christmas presents), but this can cause lifting or damage to the gel," says Taurua. Instead, avoid putting too much pressure on longer nails.

6. Skipping a base coat

"Skipping base coat is like applying makeup without a primer—the finish won’t last," says Denny. If you do your nails at home and you've always struggled with longevity, a lack of base coat is almost certainly the culprit. Often working to strengthen and hydrate the nails as well as providing a smooth finish for polish to sit on top of, a base coat is a crucial all-rounder.

‘Tis the season to get your nails done, whether you’re a back-to-back salon manicure girl or treating yourself ahead of the festivities. But if you’re stuck for a choice, there is a set of reliable nail shades for party season that just work every single time.

Though I’m a beauty journalist who knows a lot about nail trends and shades, I wanted to tap into the expertise of a top qualified manicurist for their picks of the best nail colours for the festive season. And so that’s exactly what I did, calling on Georgia Rae, AKA @raelondonnails, one of the chicest manicurists out there (she did Sofia Richie’s literal wedding nails) to get her favourite tried-and-true shades for the holidays.

As I suspected, “From the start of party season right through until January I have a few staple shades on rotation or a selection I choose from depending on my outfits or events,” she tells me. Consider this the definitive list of shades to know before your next manicure—or to have on rotation this December and into the new year.

1. Almost-black red

Vampy dark reds are a mainstay of autumn–winter and a great choice for party season. They make a bit of a statement with barely any effort. “I reach for OPI’s ‘Black Cherry Chutney’ at least once every December,” says Georgia. “An almost-black polish always feels effortlessly chic at this time of year, but the sparkle gives a little nod to the season and makes nails look ultra glossy.” Hear, hear.

2. Chic metallics

Metallics and sparkles scream party season, but if you don’t want to commit to full cover metallic nails, you can incorporate these colours as part of a lower-key nail art design. “Gold and silver are a must for party season,” says Georgia. “I wear a clean nude manicure the majority of the year, so if I’m not quite ready to part with the nudes, I’ll apply a gold or silver shade as a French tip. My favourites this season are from OPI’s new Holiday collection – ‘Nougat by Nature’ and ‘OPI’m Frosted’.”

3. Milky whites

Wintry whites just make sense at this time of year, not to mention they’ll compliment any other colour you wear them with. Georgia agrees: “With December’s bolder wardrobe choices sometimes I like to go understated with my nails, in which case I’ll opt for a milky white shade that almost gives a frosted glass effect. My favourite for this is ‘Glaciale’ from Chanel.”

4. Rich red

Reds are one of the most classic nail colour palettes you can choose from and pretty much any shade depth works for the party season. “Red is of course a December classic, but I always opt for a shade that’s a tone deeper than a traditional bright red,” Georgia explains. “One of my absolute favourites is Bio Sculpture’s ‘A Night At The Opera’.”

5. Soft-focus sparkles

Sparkle finishes don’t have to be all-out sequins and chunky, glitzy glitter (though this is the time of year for those finishes if you’re a fan). If you’re more of a minimalist, you can incorporate subtler sparkles or pearlescent finishes, too. “A sheer sparkly shade is always in my kit this time of year,” says Georgia. “Essie’s new ‘Diamond Dust’ top coat is stunning. It catches the light in the most beautiful way and can be applied on top of any shade to give it a sparkly finish. Super easy if you have a last minute event.”

6. Classic red

A classic red is almost always a good idea, and there's really no better time to opt for a bolder red manicure than the party season. Whether you prefer shorter square nails or a longer oval or almond shape, bright cherry reds look good on all length and nail shapes.

7. Chrome

Chrome nails are a great way to level up your usual mani with a twist for party season, catching the light with a dazzling reflect. While it's possible to buy some at-home chrome powders, your nail tech will be able to create the best iridescent shift using professional products.

I'm never not bemoaning the state of my once-glorious nail beds. Getting acrylics in the Deep South on holiday five years ago was perhaps the biggest beauty-related mistake of my life, as removing those inch thick gels required not one but six passes with the drill. To cover up the mess underneath, I committed to getting a manicure every two weeks for the following year. The result was flattened nail beds, which were peeling, brittle, and unable to grow.

However, this time last year, I decided enough was enough, and went cold turkey on the salon, instead opting for restorative, at-home treatments. It's been a process of trial and error, but generally speaking, my nails are in much better condition, and are (touch wood) growing long and strong. I chalk this up to several things—treatment products and not getting gels—but I think the change that made the biggest difference was the most simple: cuticle care.

While they were previously neglected, I discovered that the more I took care of the delicate skin around my nail beds, the stronger and healthier they grew—and my hands looked manicured to boot. It is key, nail guru Leighton Denny MBE tells me. "Keeping your cuticles nourished not only makes your nails look healthier, but a good cuticle oil will help reinforce the nail plate, help prevent hangnails and breakage, and massaging it in helps stimulate nail growth. Plus, you wouldn’t put a beautiful picture in a scruffy frame, so keep them healthy and moisturised."

While cuticle oil doesn't actually make your nails grow faster, Denny explains that using it keeps the nails and skin around them soft and hydrated, preventing them from becoming brittle, peeling, or breaking. This in turn helps them grow longer and look stronger, creating the ideal environment for healthy nail growth.

But like with anything, consistency is essential. Denny recommends applying cuticle oil at least twice a day—morning and evening—and especially after washing your hands: "You can never over-moisturise, but you can under-moisturise, so use it regularly. Keeping a cuticle oil with you makes it easy to maintain this routine, and regular use keeps cuticles hydrated and nails flexible, helping reduce breakage."

And make sure you apply it correctly, too. "While we call it cuticle oil, you should apply it not just to the cuticle itself, but to the area where the nail meets the skin," explains the nail expert. "The goal is for the nourishing ingredients to soak into the skin around the nail plate, and gently massage it in to encourage circulation."

• Use a Crystal File: "Investing in a good quality crystal nail file is a game-changer. They seal the tip of the nail as you file, helping prevent splits and encouraging strength. They last forever, making them incredibly affordable in the long run"
• File, Don't Saw: "If you’re not using a crystal nail file, only ever file your nails in one direction. Do not saw back and forth, as this can create micro-tears in the nail layers, leading to peeling and breakage. However, as I said above, if you are using a Crystal Nail File, you can file back and forth safely, as it gently seals the tips while shaping"
• Wear Gloves: "Water is a nail’s enemy. Excessive exposure to water, especially when cleaning with detergents, severely dries out and weakens the nail plate. Always wear gloves when washing dishes or cleaning"
• More Layers Doesn’t Mean Longer Lasting: "Applying multiple thick layers of nail polish or treatments won’t make them last longer. In fact, thick layers are more prone to chipping and peeling. Thin, even layers allow the product to adhere better, dry properly, and give a smoother, longer-lasting finish"

While we should consider taking a vitamin D supplement throughout the year, many people—myself included—tend to give it more thought during the winter months. The lack of sunshine and endless grey skies are constant reminders to support our vitamin D levels.

What is vitamin D and why is it essential for our health?

Vitamin D, also known as the sunshine vitamin, plays a huge role in several bodily functions—and what many people don’t realise is that it can also have a direct impact on our beauty routines, and in many ways, acts like a hormone. Low vitamin D levels can affect the appearance and texture of our skin, hair and nails, resulting in dullness, dryness, brittleness and breakage.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin produced in the skin when exposed to sunlight, without SPF, and directly on bare skin. So, a lack of natural sunlight can lead to a deficiency. A recent report by FORTH found that 49.5% of UK adults have vitamin D levels below the recommended levels, a significant percentage of the population, highlighting just how common vitamin D deficiency is. Take this as your sign to get your levels checked.

“Vitamin D helps to regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body, something that is essential for building and maintaining healthy bones,” says Dr Jessica Western, Cosmetic Doctor at Dr Leah Skin Clinics. “It also supports immune health and helps to reduce inflammation. Vitamin D is also involved in cell growth and neuromuscular function, both of which are vital for proper development and function of muscles and nerves,” she adds.

What are the signs of vitamin D deficiency?

Vitamin D deficiency symptoms often begin with systemic concerns, such as fatigue, lower back pain, and muscle cramps. But one that’s often overlooked is dry skin. “One of the most common ways in which a vitamin D deficiency impacts the skin is by impairing its ability to retain moisture, which leads to it becoming dry, itchy, and prone to breakouts,” explains Dr Jessica Western, an aesthetics doctor with a special interest in dermatology. “Vitamin D deficiency impairs the skin’s protective barrier, making the skin more prone to infections and inflammation, and can also trigger flare-ups or worsen existing conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.”

When it comes to skin appearance, low vitamin D can cause the skin to appear dull and accelerate the signs of aging. Because cell turnover slows down, you might even notice that blemishes and hyperpigmentation may take longer than usual to repair.

While researchers have only identified a moderate link between vitamin D deficiency and hair loss, Dr Zainab Laftah, Consultant Dermatologist at HCA The Shard, explains “that the vitamin D receptors are present in human hair-follicle cells and therefore play a role in the normal hair-growth cycle.” Implementing a supplement routine that includes vitamin D will likely have a more positive impact if you’re dealing with hair loss.

When it comes to nails, you really can see the effects of vitamin D. Dr Ireny Salama, aesthetics at The HVN, says: “Vitamin D plays a role in calcium regulation and keratin production. Low levels contribute to brittle, peeling nails, slower growth and ridging.” Something not even the best nail appointment can solve.

How to increase your vitamin D levels

“Global advisory bodies such as the National Academy of Medicine recommend around 600 IU (15 µg) daily for adults up to 70 years, rising to 800 IU (20 µg) for older adults,” says Dr Hanine Estephan, Founder of Glowspan & Scientific Advisor to Elevate Wellness. But before you rush to buy vitamin D supplements, make sure to consult your doctor—too much vitamin D can cause a build-up of calcium.

Unlike other vitamins, you can’t simply eat your way to higher vitamin D levels, as very few foods contain it naturally and so how you consume supplements matters especially more. “Clinical studies confirm higher serum 25(OH)D concentrations when vitamin D is taken with meals containing fat compared to fat-free meals.” Dr. Hanine Estephan recommends consuming foods like avocados, nuts, eggs, and dairy alongside your vitamin D for improved absorption. But don’t overthink it. Dr Hanine explains that it can be as simple as incorporating a vitamin D smoothie: “Elevate Wellness does this well with its Golden Boost smoothies, which blend vitamin D supplementation alongside fortified plant milk base with citrus, ginger, and turmeric to complement vitamin D’s anti-inflammatory effects.” Top tip: Pair your vitamin D with vitamins K2, which enhances absorption.

It’s also important to note that “there isn’t one ‘bad’ food that blocks vitamin D, but certain patterns and conditions can get in the way. Very low-fat diets, gut or liver issues that affect fat absorption, and medications that block fat absorption or bind bile acids can all make it harder for your body to use vitamin D properly,” explains Emily English, BSc-qualified nutritionist and founder of gut health supplement brand, Epetōme.

She adds: “Vitamin D is essential for overall health and supports the well-being of the skin, hair, and nails. While more research is needed to fully understand how deficiency directly contributes to issues such as hair loss, brittle nails, and skin inflammation, maintaining adequate levels remains important.”

“The nail trends I’m loving for autumn–winter are rich, wearable tones with a high shine, glossy finish,” says manicurist Sophia Stylianou. “Perfectly neat, polished nails that feel effortless but still luxe. For me, it’s all about keeping things clean and elevated this season.”

The wider chrome nails trend has evolved slightly over the last couple of years, but it’s still very much here to stay. “Achieved with high-shine mirror chrome, this trend is perfect for late autumn, winter, and the holiday season,” says manicurist Mateja Novaković. “It works both as a fun manicure for all those fabulous holiday dinners and parties, as well as to elevate a dark winter outfit.”

Deep red wine

A classic palette that is all but guaranteed to trend every single winter, dark wine reds are always a strong choice for winter, as well as being a key colour in fashion this year. “I’m also obsessed with dark red tones right now—deep merlot, vampy cherry shades,” says Stylianou. “They are classic, sexy and perfect for autumn–winter. It’s that timeless red but with a moodier twist, which fits the season perfectly.”

Soft nudes

Milky nudes and soft, barely there shades are a failsafe choice—and very on trend this winter. “I can’t get enough of creamy, milky shades,” says Stylianou, who also tips soft nudes and creamy shades for AW25. “They give that fresh, clean look that goes with everything and always feels really polished and healthy. It ties in with that whole ‘quiet luxury’ moment where nails look minimal, healthy and still feel expensive.”

Hot chocolate nails

Another tried-and-true classic for winter is browns, be they soft and creamy or dark and rich. “The colour that absolutely dominated in fashion this season, this can vary from cool toned mocha, to deep, warm chocolate browns,” says Novaković.

Cream nails

At the other end of the scale, cream nails are also trending this winter. “We saw butter yellow nails all over our feed last summer and this shade is the winter version of it,” says Novaković. “A light, creamy, sheer vanilla manicure.”

Nail trends come and go, but as far as timeless designs go, nothing quite beats the magic of a classic French manicure. Be it its minimalist nature or the way it enhances the shape of the nails, the look has repeatedly reaffirmed its cult status, and deservedly so.

The only hiccup? It can become quite repetitive, and generally speaking, it's not the best choice if you're looking for something unique. Of course, over the years, we've witnessed quite a few interesting variations of the French—from the famed coloured tips to the reversed halos. The latest trend on the block? Enter: C-French nails, a design that combines the "clean-girl" look of the original French with a special twist. And recently, it was seen on none other than Jennie Kim from BlackPink (painted by A-list celebrity manicurist Zola Ganzorigt).

As the name implies, instead of outlining the tip of the nail, this design involves painting a C-shaped line on the side of the nail. According to A-list Manicurist, and Senior Mylee Ambassador, Tinu Bello, "C French nails are the next evolution of the classic French manicure (the next-gen French if you like)."

"It features a deeper, more defined smile line that follows the natural curve of the nail bed. The result is a sleek, sculpted look that instantly makes your fingers look longer and more elegant. In short, think of it as the elevated, luxury version of the French mani - clean, modern, and refined, but still minimal and wearable."

"They photograph beautifully, they elongate the nail, and they look equally stunning in classic neutral French manicure shades or bold, autumnal colours," she explains.

How to choose the right shade for C French nails

"Choosing the right shade is all about contrast and undertone," says Tinu.

"For your base colour, go for a sheer, milky nude that complements your skin’s undertone (pinky beige if it's cool, peachy nude if it leans warm, and soft ivory or sheer pink if you're more neutral)."

And as far as the tip goes, Tinu shares that there's plenty of ways to experiment. "You can definitely stay classic with white, but modern C French looks incredible with a soft beige, or a latte-like hue (such as the Mylee Ohh La La Gel Polish), or even pastel chrome tips."

"For bolder looks, try a deep burgundy, espresso-esque or navy shades — just keep the curve crisp and intentional," she says. "A good tip is to always match the depth of the curve to the natural nail shape and length (too thick on a short nail may make the fingers look shorter). My advice is to go for a long almond or a coffin shape for an elegant touch.

It's essentially a super sheer, ultra-shiny slick of any colour your heart desires, but what makes it stand out is how natural it looks—you can still see your nail bed underneath the sheeny "oily" gloss. “I’ve always championed the philosophy of ‘skincare for nails,’ and the current trend for ultra-glossy, subtly tinted nails is a true testament to that," comments nail expert and brand founder, Leighton Denny MBE. "I love seeing the focus shifting to healthy, well-nourished nails. The so-called 'oil' nails look is all about that—nails in such tip-top condition they shine with an effortless, healthy gleam. They move beyond a mere aesthetic and are becoming a statement about nail condition.”

How to get the "oil" manicure

Denny explains that this trend is the essence of the 'your nails but better' aesthetic. "The sheer tints are key—giving a wash of colour, like a warm dusty rose with a hint of orange, that enhances the natural tone of the nail rather than masking it. Like a perfect lip gloss, the effect is plump, luminous, and sophisticated, making it the quiet-luxury nail look that works with every outfit and occasion.”

This means that the colour you choose, and the opacity is key, adds the expert. "For this look, it’s all about building translucent warmth, not stacking opaque colours. Look for that singular, sheer warm-toned pink. My cult classic Less Is More, a clear, buildable raspberry-toned polish, is ideal. It brightens the nail bed and instantly gives that healthy, rosy glow. For extra dimension, choose a glossy, wet-looking top coat to really give that oil-like effect. I long for the day when I can switch my white summer dresses for cosy knits, to sit next to a fire after a good old stomp in a leaf-littered park and dig out my beloved burgundy nail polishes. This time last year, my nails were in a sorry state. After more harsh gel removals than I can count, my once strong, healthy nails were peeling, brittle, and essentially a shadow of their former selves. So, I went cold turkey; I paused all salon visits and focused on repairing them from the inside out.

As the months passed, I discovered some hero products: polishes that not only looked good but also nourished my nails, as well as some holy grail strengtheners and treatments. Currently, I'm not planning on heading back to the salon, and instead, I'm trying to nail (pun intended) my at-home manicure.

But I'm no nail tech, and no matter how hard I try, I've been struggling to get that "clean" look you get in the salon. And according to all the experts I've consulted, this largely comes down to cuticle care.

"Healthy cuticles equal healthy nails. When you look after them, you’ll notice stronger nail growth, fewer chips and breaks, and manicures that last longer," replied Rebecca Crawforth, founder of Navy Professional, when I spoke to her about my woes. "It also gives them a clean, polished look, even when you’re not wearing colour. Think of cuticle care as the foundation of every manicure."

But it's not only that, your cuticles also act as a natural barrier, protecting the nail bed from bacteria, dirt and infection. If they're neglected, they can become dry, cracked or overgrown—this doesn't just look untidy, but it can lead to weaker nails and hangnails. Plus, it's important to remember that nail health starts at the root, adds Crawforth. "Your cuticles protect that area. If they’re in poor condition, your nails are far more likely to peel, split, or grow unevenly."

As such, regular at-home care is essential to keep them healthy, maintain that proctective seal and leave your non-professional mani looking as good as it can. Ahead, your guide to mastering cuticle care at home.

What's the key to clean-looking cuticles?

"Clean" doesn't mean cutting away too much, stresses Crawforth. "It’s about keeping them neat, hydrated, and free of dead skin. I recommend gently pushing any non-living tissue back with Navy's Doris tool and regularly applying a nourishing serum or oil. That way, your cuticles look tidy but remain healthy and intact

Master manicurist, Julia Diogo, adds that cuticle oil should be your best friend. "You don't need a huge kit, just a gentle cuticle remover, a good pusher and a nourishing oil." She loves Bio Sculpture’s Golden Nail Serum for this.

What steps should you follow for at-home cuticle care?

Start by washing your hands and removing any polish, says Crawforth. "Gently push back the cuticles with a professional tool, but never force them. And then only trim loose, dead skin or hangnails, avoiding cutting live tissue."

Diogo adds that if you want, you can incorporate a cuticle remover to soften the skin: "This way you can lift away any excess without causing damage from pushing too hard."

Next, massage in a cuticle serum or oil daily to keep the area hydrated, and seal everything in with a rich hand balm or cream. "Consistency is key; a few minutes of care each week makes a huge difference. And remember to protect your hands by wearing gloves when cleaning or washing up!"

I’ve spent the better part of a decade on the hunt for the ultimate milky nail polish. Each manicure appointment finds me agonising—for longer than is reasonable—over the shade chart, often asking my manicurist to swatch multiple options. I’m searching for that elusive balance: a whisper of pink for warmth, but not so much that it feels girlish; a touch of white for depth, but never chalky or opaque.

I’ve retired my trusty navy jumpers in favour of rich chocolate knits, swapped my classic black handbag for a deep espresso tote—and even traded in my go-to milky manicure for a glossy cocoa shade. There’s something about it that feels quietly luxurious: it’s softer than black, cooler than nude, and has that unfussy polish that instantly elevates an outfit.

Of course, nothing compares to a salon trip when it comes to achieving a high-shine, chip-resistant manicure. But like most of us, I’m trying to strike the balance, alternating indulgent professional treatments with more practical at-home polish sessions. Which is why, over the past month, I’ve been road-testing and curating the ultimate edit of chocolate brown nail polishes.

From sheer, milky washes of latte to rich, glossy mocha and bold, near-black espresso shades, these are the bottles worth adding to your collection this season.

The best chocolate nail polish

Gel manicures changed the nail game with their chip-free, high-shine finish and, over the past decade, have become a staple of beauty maintenance for many. But their rise hasn’t come without challenges. In fact, no other corner of the beauty world has weathered quite as much controversy. Gels have been at the centre of repeated safety scares: UV lamps accused of causing premature ageing and raising skin cancer risk; allergy-triggering acrylates like HEMA driving a spike in skin reactions; and most recently, the EU’s gel nail polish ban on formulas containing the photoinitiator TPO after it was linked to reproductive toxicity in animal studies. Each time, the industry has reformulated, and clients have returned—a testament to just how transformative gel nails are. Yet the never-ending cycle of alarm bells begs the question: are gel nails inherently problematic?

The nature of gel polish

Traditional nail polishes are composed of pigment and resins dissolved in solvents. As it dries and the solvents evaporate, it leaves a film of colour over the nail bed. There is no chemical reaction—it's just drying out. Gel, on the other hand, doesn't dry—it 'cures'. It relies on a process called polymerisation where tiny liquid building blocks link together to form a plastic-like coating. To make this happen, the formula needs to contain photoinitiators (like TPO), which are chemicals that react to UV or LED light and kickstart the polymerisation reaction.

Because the whole product depends on a chemical reaction triggered by light, gel polish must contain reactive ingredients that are more prone to regulatory scrutiny. But without them, the gel would just sit on the nail as a sticky liquid.

The history of red flags

Over the past decade, gels have endured a series of safety scandals. UV lamps were accused of accelerating skin ageing and raising cancer risk. In 2010, the first case reports surfaced documenting women with non-melanoma skin cancers on the backs of their hands after years of regular gel manicures, and the media quickly ran with it. However, the evidence is scanty, and the overall risk appears to be low.

Then there were the allergic reactions to HEMA, or 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate, that is used in gels to help adhesion between the natural nail plate and the gel layer. Because of its small molecular weight, it can penetrate the skin incredibly easily, and if it contacts skin repeatedly, it can trigger allergic contact dermatitis—red, itchy, blistered skin around nails, fingers, and sometimes even eyelids or face.

Most recently, the EU banned TPO, or trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (a commonly used photoinitiator that is responsible for hardening gel polish under a lamp) classifying it as potentially carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic for reproduction (CMR 1B) based on animal studies.

Each time a scandal breaks, brands have worked hard to reformulate without the problematic component—and clients have happily come back to salons.

Why the constant scrutiny?

It can feel as though regulators have a particular bugbear with gel nails. But with millions of us having gels reapplied every few weeks, there's a high level of chronic, repeated exposure—not to mention the thousands of nail technicians who are working with the products on a daily basis. And in the EU, that scrutiny is supported by a hazard-based legal framework: if an ingredient shows signs of reproductive toxicity or allergenicity in animal or lab studies, it’s banned outright, regardless of real-world application. In the U.S., by contrast, regulation is risk-based, with bans only triggered once there’s evidence of actual harm to humans.

So, are gels inherently problematic?

So, do all these red flags point to a product that is fundamentally unsafe? The truth is more nuanced. Gels will always rely on reactive chemistry to deliver their performance, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be made safer. Indeed, each wave of regulation has nudged the category forward, replacing risky ingredients with less problematic alternatives.

That said, it never hurts to dial back the frequency of your gel appointments and swap in a traditional polish now and then. Just as our skin and hair benefit from a breather, our nails appreciate the occasional break too.

The brands leading the way

Scan any beauty insider’s skincare shelf and you’ll likely spot one product they all have in common: collagen supplements. Whether in gummy, powder, liquid or capsule form, they’ve become a staple of the beauty world, hailed as the secret to glowing skin, stronger nails and thicker hair. But among the glossy promises, one question remains—do collagen supplements actually work?

Collagen is the body’s structural protein, found in skin, bones, muscles and ligaments. It provides strength and elasticity and is essentially the “glue” that holds everything together. There are 28 types of collagen, but when it comes to beauty, the first five are most relevant: Type I, the most abundant, keeps skin elastic and strengthens hair and nails; Type II supports cartilage and joint health; Type III works with Type I to maintain skin firmness and support muscles and blood vessels; Type IV acts as a structural glue between skin layers (though it isn’t available in supplement form); and Type V, less well known, helps form cell membranes and plays a role in placenta development during pregnancy.

The body naturally produces collagen from amino acids in food, but research shows production begins to decline from our mid-twenties. This is where supplementation comes in. “When you ingest hydrolysed collagen peptides, they’re absorbed into the bloodstream and recognised by the body as fragments of its own collagen,” explains Anna Lahey, founder of ingestible collagen brand Vida Glow. “This triggers a ‘wound-healing’ response, stimulating fibroblasts to produce more collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.”

Lola Biggs, registered dietitian at natural health supplement brand Together Health, agrees—with one crucial caveat. “Some bioactive peptides do survive digestion and may act as cellular messengers, potentially stimulating fibroblasts to produce more collagen,” she says. “However, your body will always choose to prioritise protein for essential functions like wound healing over cosmetic skin improvements.”

So, what does the research actually show? Several trials do point to subtle boosts in hydration, elasticity and even fine lines, enough to explain why collagen has become beauty’s buzziest supplement. A 2025 meta-analysis in the American Journal of Medicine, which reviewed 23 randomised clinical trials, confirmed modest benefits overall, including improvements to elasticity and wrinkle reduction.

Some brands also have trial results on their own products. “Our independent, 12-week, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study showed hydration increased by up to 79.6%, fine lines and wrinkles reduced by up to 85%, and elasticity improved by up to 83%,” says Pupinder Ghatora, award-winning pharmacist and co-founder of collagen brand INGENIOUS. “These results weren’t estimated—they were objectively measured and statistically significant.”

Still, it’s important to note that much of the evidence for collagen’s beauty benefits comes from clinical trials that are relatively small (typically 60–120 participants), short (8–12 weeks) and, sometimes, funded by the very manufacturers selling the supplements. “While some studies show improvements in skin hydration and elasticity, a troubling pattern emerges: industry-funded research consistently shows benefits, but independent studies often don’t,” says Biggs. “High-quality studies with strong methodology show no benefits, while lower-quality studies (smaller cohorts and shorter time-frames) report improvements.”

This doesn’t invalidate those findings, but it does mean they should be interpreted with caution. For example, studies often report statistically significant changes (such as a 10% increase in skin hydration), but as Biggs points out, is that clinically meaningful? In other words, would you actually see it in the mirror? A measurable change under lab conditions doesn’t always translate into a visible transformation.

There’s also the matter of differing standards of evidence. Scientists and regulatory bodies look for large, randomised, double-blind, long-term trials before declaring anything “proven.” The European Food Safety Authority, for example, has set such a high bar for health claims that it has rejected any official claims for collagen supplements.

And yet, clinical data isn’t the only story. Thousands of consumers genuinely report positive changes, from stronger nails to plumper skin and healthier hair. “Our customers consistently report visible improvements in skin hydration, brightness and texture within two to four weeks,” says Ghatora. “More significant changes, such as a reduction in fine lines, enhanced skin elasticity, and stronger hair and nails, usually become apparent after eight to 12 weeks.”

Lahey has heard similar feedback: “Our customers often tell us they notice stronger nails and more hydrated skin within the first four to six weeks. With consistent use, hair quality improves, and fine lines and wrinkles become less pronounced.”

The key, according to Biggs, is to manage expectations. “The benefits tend to be gradual and modest rather than dramatic,” she says. And collagen works best as part of a holistic approach to skin health. “A diet rich in antioxidant foods shows the strongest evidence for skin benefits,” she adds. “Vitamin C is crucial since your body cannot make collagen without it. Omega-3 fatty acids support skin barrier function and reduce inflammation. For hair health, adequate protein, iron, zinc and B vitamins are far more impactful than any single supplement.”

As for the future? Lahey is optimistic. “Ingestible beauty is still in its early chapters—and collagen is the cornerstone,” she says. “Consumers are looking for solutions that support healthy ageing, resilience and vitality over time. The future is about multifunctional formulations that simplify routines and deliver both immediate and long-term benefits.”

I've always been looking for the perfect manicure—you know, the one that instantly makes you seem put together, elongates your hands, and goes with whatever the vibe is on that particular day. Some people have this nailed (pun unintended), but others like myself are always switching it up in pursuit of a mani that works with everything.

However, according to session manicurist, Sophia Stylianou, what I may have been searching for all along is the nail length that suits my hands best. "It’s the foundation that determines how polished, elegant, edgy, or understated your hands look. The right length can elongate the fingers and even alter the perception of nail colour or nail art." And this can even change the look and feel of your mani: "A short nail with nude polish feels clean and modern, while the same colour on a long nail looks glamorous and statement-making," she explains. Think practically

Nail length is largely based on your lifestyle and what you find comfortable—if you're someone who is very active, exercises regularly, or works in a manual labour job, you may decide that short nails are more practical. Longer nails, on the other hand, are perfect if you want room for nail art, a more dramatic look, and if they won't interfere with your day-to-day life. "It’s not one-size-fits-all. The 'ideal' length is whatever feels comfortable, practical, and makes you feel confident," she says.

Take a look at your hands

As Stylianou explains, there's a general rule of thumb when it comes to nail lengths. "Short nails suit smaller hands or wider nail beds," she tells me. "Medium-length nails are universally flattering, balancing most hand shapes. And finally, long nails will elongate shorter fingers and create a striking, elegant look.

Consider nail shape too

So, you've figured out what nail length suits you best. Now, it's time to look at the shape. The manicurist advises using your natural nail bed as a guide and thinking about the overall look you want to achieve. As a guideline: "Almond and oval shapes lengthen the fingers, square or squoval shapes flatter longer nail beds, and round nails look soft on shorter ones." But remember, nail health should reign supreme before you think of things like length and shape. As always, Stylianou stresses that you should maintain your nails with regular filing, as well as moisturising them and your cuticles, and most importantly, "avoid using your nails as tools!"

“Chocolate and deep rich brown shades have become THE standout colours of the year,” Said Ami Streets, when I asked her predictions for this season's trending pedicure shades. “These tones have been championed across fashion, beauty, and accessories, making the colour a modern classic. On toes, this shade feels indulgent and elegant, echoing the warmth of autumn while also perfectly complementing the cozy, luxurious vibe of winter. It’s [also] a sophisticated alternative to black or burgundy, offering depth and richness with a softer, more wearable edge.”

Autumn Pedicure Trends: Re-vamped Red

“Red is a colour that will never leave the beauty world, but every season it reinvents itself to feel relevant,” says Leighton Denny, “For autumn 2025, it’s all about the darker, juicier reds - black cherry and wine-stain tones that add instant depth. On toes, it feels bold yet wearable, glamorous yet versatile. It’s that perfect balance of classic and modern, which is why it’s set to be a huge trend this season.”

Autumn Pedicure Trends: Cool Khaki

For a shade that feels a little more unique, Ami recommends opting for earthy khaki tones. “Khaki green is a fresh yet grounded choice for AW25 pedicures tapping into the season’s wider trend for earthy, utilitarian tones,” she told me, “With fashion leaning into military-inspired tailoring and mossy, nature-led palettes, this muted green feels modern but versatile and stands out as a chic alternative to black or brown — still understated, but with a subtle edge that keeps a pedicure looking fashion-forward.”

Autumn Pedicure Trends: Bronze Metals

For those who prefer their pedicure with a little added shimmer, bronze tones are a chic choice. “Every autumn, there’s a natural shift towards texture, light, and warmth,” explained Leighton, “and that’s why bronze metallics are such a key pedicure trend this year. It also ties in so perfectly with the season itself: think falling leaves, candlelight, and warm coppery shades. This is a pedicure colour that’s playful, luxurious, and absolutely in tune with the autumn mood.”

Autumn Pedicure Trends: Milky White

While many pedicure trends come and go with the seasons, milky white is a shade that stands its ground year-round, including during the autumn months. “Milky White nail polish feels unexpectedly chic for AW pedicures because it brings a clean, luminous finish to a season usually dominated by deep, moody shades,” says Ami, “I love the juxtaposition of a soft, pale hue against the heavier textures and darker palettes of winter fashion; it’s fresh, modern, and quietly luxurious.”

Autumn Pedicure Trends: Barely Brown

For Autumn 2025, chocolate isn't the only brown hue we’ll be asking for. "Brown is always a big story in the nail world for autumn, [this year] we’re seeing it taken in a new direction - softer, sheerer, sexier with a whisper of colour that enhances the nails without overpowering,” says Leighton, “These sheerer espresso and chocolate tones work beautifully against autumn fashion textures like wool, leather, and tweed. It’s subtle, modern, and just feels right for now: less heavy than winter black, more sensual than the simple beige. This is the brown of the season.”

Autumn Pedicure Trends: Glossy Black

Last but not least, I’ve got to include my favourite autumn pedicure shade — a glossy black pedicure. The perfect antidote to summer’s white pedicure, this timeless colour looks crisp, clean and incredibly elegant, especially during the colder months. Top a true black tone with a high-shine top coat for a dark, lacquered look.

Summer shows no signs of slowing down, which means we won't be out of flip-flops anytime soon. I have always loved a bog-standard pedicure, but recently, they're simply not cutting it—and ditto all my tried and trusted foot balms and salves. So, I wanted something a little more intensive.

That's when I was introduced to the notion of a dry pedicure. At first, this may sound counterintutive, but really, they allow your practitioner to hone in on all the hidden problem zones and nooks and crannies. Read on for the lowdown.

What is a dry pedicure?

Podiatrist Margaret Dabbs—also known as the beauty industry's foremost foot guru, explains that a dry pedicure is simply a pedicure that is performed entirely sans water during the "treatment" phase of the procedure. "A dry pedicure simply means no water is used, giving immediate, long-lasting transformation," she says. "They're perfect for anyone who wants to see transformative professional, long-lasting results from their beauty pedicure."

How is a dry pedicure performed?

A dry pedicure uses luxury and clinical formulations to treat dehydration, hard skin, cracks, calluses and more, while providing anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-fungal benefits. "By combining podiatry expertise with results-driven luxury, it delivers outstanding health and beauty benefits for both men and women, making it a sought-after part of many clients’ self-care routines," adds Dabbs.

Then: "Once all the “dirty work” has been completed, the customer can then enjoy a lovely foot scrub and soak, in beautiful relaxing surroundings, bathing their feet in remote-controlled foot spas. This is then followed by a foot massage and toe nails can be painted."

What are the benefits of a dry pedicure

"Water masks areas of concern on the feet, and weakens the tissues and therefore all the technical work is performed first on dry skin, ensuring precision, greater visibility of concerns, and providing longer-lasting results," explains Dabbs.

Best products to maintain a dry pedicure

My feet are rarely ever in tip-top shape, even if I've made a concerted effort to stay on top of upkeep and pedis. I have chronically dehydrated skin, and it extends to my toes and heels, which are nearly always cracked. I've tried all manner of foot salves and balms, and while they definitely help keep things moisturised and extend the life of my pedicures, they're not a fix.

And then I heard about paraffin pedicures—a spa treatment that involves dipping your feet in warm, melted wax to soften the skin, while providing other therapeutic benefits. Consider me sold. Ahead, I break down the treatment.

What is a paraffin pedicure

A paraffin pedicure is a treatment—often seen at spas or certain salons—that involves dipping the feet in melted paraffin wax, repeatedly, to moisturise the skin from the inside out.

What are the benefits of paraffin pedicures

As well as hydrating and nourishing the feet, paraffin pedicures help when it comes to soothing and softening calluses, and aiding with the removal of dead skin cells. It's also said that they can improve circulation and provide pain relief for sore joints and muscles. Heat is also therapeutic, so it could help you relax and provide repose from conditions like arthritis.

How is a paraffin pedicure performed?

The process will begin with your feet being scrubbed and your nails being trimmed. Your practitioner will then dip and coat your feet in the warm paraffin wax multiple times to build up a thick layer that is left on to harden. This is aided by enclosed plastic bags, which help seal in the heat to deeply penetrate and moisturise the skin.

To finish, your practitioner will remove the wax and add a hydrating balm to complete the treatment.

I'd argue that rose has long been understood in beauty. Sure, it may have a reputation for being a bit fussy, but in certain instances, it really works... Like on your nails. This summer, the latest K-beauty import comes in the form of glimmering rose water nails, and they are just gorgeous for the season, especially if you're not into big, bright, bold colours.

The manicure, which has been worn by all manner of K-pop stars, including Rosé, features a barely-there rosy pink shade to enhance your natural nail with a subtle, translucent wash of colour. And it's highly customisable, you can amp up the base colour with a high-gloss, magnetic shimmer finish, if you so fancy.

“To achieve this look, start with a sheer pink base of your choice," explains Lynn. "You can opt for a soft baby pink or a slightly deeper cherry pink, but the key is keeping it translucent. This look is all about that barely-there, natural finish. To add sparkle, layer on a pearlescent pale pink with subtle bluish reflections. It gives a delicate, luminous shimmer that perfectly captures that shimmery, water-like glow." The manicurist recommends applying thin coats of your chosen polish, as this look is all about maintaining a natural, clean finish. "Thicker layers can take away from that effect, and remember, you can always build up the colour gradually!"

If you don't want to attempt this at home, you should ask your salon for a soft pink manicure with a reflective chrome finish—if you want it to be more on the sparkly side. "For those who want an extra sparkly look, you can ask for a magnetic cat-eye effect finish. However, to avoid any confusion and ensure your nail tech knows exactly what you're after, it's always best to bring a reference photo," Lynn adds.

We're in the midst of a nail revolution. Kind of. There was a time when I would have felt uneasy about leaving the house without having my nails done. But after years of regular appointments (every three weeks to be exact), getting my gels removed and then reapplied, my nails were so weak they practically collapsed under the weight. I took a break a couple of years ago and have never looked back. I now get the occasional gel manicure, but that's normally for a holiday or a special occasion. I'm not alone; my colleague, Beauty Editor Nessa Humayun, has also been on a nail health journey and spends a lot less time at the nail salon. "This creates an even canvas and, when paired with a high-shine top coat, gives that juicy, plump finish." Julia Diogo, one of Bio Sculpture's top techs, agrees with Rae and says that a great base coat is the secret to a flawless manicure. "It grips your colour for longer wear and protects your nails from staining, especially with rich or pigmented shades. I always go for one packed with nail-loving ingredients too."

What's the difference between nude and clear base coats?

In my opinion nude base coats are far superior, because I love to wear them alone. But there was a time when you could only get a clear one. "Both protect the nail and help your manicure last longer," says Diogo. "But a nude base coat can provide a more natural-looking manicure if worn on its own or can add extra pigment if you would like to use a nude polish on top." She likens a nude base coat to a tinted moisturiser in the way that it blurs out imperfections.

What's the difference between a nude base coat and a nude nail polish?

Why use a nude base coat when there are hundreds of perfectly fine nude polishes on the market? According to Rae, it's all about the sheer finish and how it evens out the nail whilst enhancing the natural tone. There's also the added bonus of the strengthening ingredients, which you wouldn't get in a polish.

An unusual new nail art trend has emerged, and it's one I certainly didn't see coming—nail tattoos. No, I'm not talking about stickers, I'm talking about actually tattooing the nail plate with ink and a tattoo gun. It may sound extreme, but it's actually surprisingly delicate and pain-free according to those who have tried it.

With skincare for nails and nail health products trending, it's clear that plenty of us are forgoing our regular gel manis in favour of something less damaging. However, that doesn't mean that statement nail art has to be abandoned altogether.

Yes, you can use regular polish, but the drying time combined with frequent chipping means it isn't the most practical option for everyone. If you're after something long-lasting and entirely damage-resistant that won't sacrifice nail health, nail tattoos might be about to sway you.

What are nail tattoos?

Tattoo artist Amber, aka Plush Tattoo, has cropped up on my For You page with her innovative nail tattooing technique, the feeling of which she compares to the vibrations created by an electric nail file. Her client, @smokulani on TikTok, says that it really feels "like nothing," which is good news for the pain-adverse.

The process involves gently tattooing the nail plate to create designs of your choice, essentially etching motifs onto the nail using tattoo ink. There's zero downtime required, and nothing you need to do to your nails after the treatment. And the beauty of it is that you can simply paint over your nails with polish if you want a break from the design.

Although it's a tattoo in the traditional sense, it is still temporary due to how our nails grow. Give it two or three months and the design will have grown out enough for you to cut your lengths and be left with entirely fresh, healthy nails.

The results are even more delicate than regular nail art, and there's the added bonus of longevity. You can also apply your favourite nail health products as usual to keep your nails growing strong whilst you have the tattoo on.

It doesn't seem to be a trend that many people have indulged in just yet, or one that many tattoo artists offer. However, with HEMA-free nail polishes and strengthening treatments becoming so sought after, this method of enhancing the natural nail with zero damage seems like a winner.
