The first Monday in May is synonymous with style and celebrities descending on the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, in honour of the Met Gala celebrating the Costume Institute's spring 2026 exhibition, Costume Is Art.

Last night saw the theme take centre stage—and opinions on the looks that graced the red carpet are decidedly mixed. Where houses like Schiaparelli are famed for merging the realms of fashion and art through couture creations, this year's designers and stylists appeared to take the theme a little more literally.

Rather than letting fashion be the art, many of the outfits instead resembled or drew inspiration from iconic works. Emma Chamberlain channelled Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night, Angela Bassett became a living portrait, evoking Laura Wheeler Waring's Girl in a Pink Dress, and Claire Foy, Lauren Sanchez-Bezos, Julianne Moore and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley all sought inspiration from John Singer Sargent's Madame X painting. A crossover we predict was far from planned.

Some celebrities went in an altogether different direction, paring back their looks entirely in a move many are interpreting as a political statement.

The outfits that shone brightest, however, were those that felt truly spectacular—bold silhouettes, creative craftsmanship and looks that could genuinely be counted as costume. Below, the ones we loved most, and the artworks that inspired them.

Fashion fans know what the first Monday in May means: The 2026 Met Gala! After a memorable awards season and weeks of anticipation, it's finally time to see what the biggest stars in the world chose to wear to fashion's biggest night.

This year's theme is "Costume Art," celebrating a Costume Institute exhibit all about the relationship between bodies and the clothes they wear—in art and in real life. With a coordinating Met Gala red carpet dress code of "Fashion Is Art," guests are invited to treat their red-carpet looks as an art form. The dress code left a lot to interpretation, but we expected to see dramatic shapes, references to major works of art, and a naked dress or two—the kind of couture meant to be displayed at a museum—and we weren't wrong.

I knew the 2026 Met Gala red carpet best-dressed list would be a challenge to narrow down. It's partially the guest list's fault: The only other time names like Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, and Zoë Kravitz are in the same room, it's the Oscars or the Grammys—and those carpets don't host nearly as many VIPs at once. But the real culprit in making my job as Marie Claire US's senior fashion editor a tough one is the 2026 Met Gala dress code.

To correspond with this year's Costume Institute exhibit, "Costume Art," the co-chairs asked guests to consider "Fashion Is Art" their guiding styling principle. This guaranteed a Met Gala red carpet best-dressed list full of artistry and exquisite detail—but definitely not a universal interpretation of the evening's defining theme. Some guests focused on the exhibit's emphasis on celebrating the ties between the anatomical human form and art (hello, Beyonce's subversive naked dress); others tapped their favourite designers for stroke-for-stroke recreations of pieces first created on a painting's canvas. Sabrina Carpenter abandoned paintings and sculptures entirely, instead putting her spin on Old Hollywood with a Dior dress literally crafted from film. Then there's Rihanna: the latest Met Gala red carpet entry who shut down the event in a Maison Margiela gown so gilded, it would make Gustav Klimt's "Woman in Gold" jealous.

After spending hours poring over every Met Gala red-carpet arrival, I can say the following 14 looks are living works of art. Catch up on each of Marie Claire's picks for best-dressed below.

Beyoncé wearing custom Olivier Rousteing

She's baaaaaack! Beyoncé's return to the Met Gala red carpet after a ten-year hiatus would have earned a best-dressed ranking no matter what she wore. Still, Marie Claire's fashion editors were speechless when the singer pulled up in a custom Olivier Rousteing creation resembling a bedazzled skeleton, topped by an extra-long feather cape.

The sheer level of sparkle—and Beyoncé's arrival with husband Jay-Z and daughter Blue Ivy—is headline-worthy on their own. But as the co-chair explained in her official red carpet interview, there's more meaning than a dazzling first impression. Beyoncé said she chose to work with Rousteing given the many times he's championed her music over the years, from custom tour outfits to designing her Black Is King costumes. As for the skeleton motif? It's her way of "celebrating whatever God gave you." Amen to that.

Nicole Kidman wearing Chanel

Nicole Kidman didn't need to comb through the Met's vast archives for a red carpet reference. Instead, she and stylist Jason Bolden tapped Matthieu Blazy's Chanel for a bespoke dress that suggested she is the work of art. Vogue says the bright red sequins are a nod to "the Big Apple," aka the setting for tonight's major event. Between the fiery shade and the sequins pouring over her frame like liquid, I'd say the real homage is to Kidman herself—owning her seventh Met Gala red carpet like she belongs on display.

Doechii wearing Marc Jacobs

Don't mistake Doechii's second-ever Met Gala red carpet look for just another twist on the naked dress. Working with Marc Jacobs, the star took a definitive turn from last year's glamouratti Gucci suit while staying true to her style DNA. "I wanted to go with something human and grounded," she explained of the sinuous purple wrap—and the unexpected move to go barefoot.

Zoë Kravitz has worn several Met Gala red-carpet dresses designed by Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent. But this year's took her penchant for semi-sheer dressing in a refreshingly new direction, mixing a Victorian pannier skirt with decidedly modern, see-through lace. If this is a hint at the newly-engaged Kravitz's bridal style, I'm here for it. (If only she'd let us glimpse her diamond engagement ring on the carpet...)

Turns out, "Sabrinawood" wasn't just a Coachella costuming phase—it was a hint at the pop star's upcoming 2026 Met Gala red carpet dress. Sabrina Carpenter and stylist Jared Ellner reunited with Dior for one of the night's most personalized twists on the "Fashion Is Art" dress code. Carpenter's glossy gown is actually constructed from rows and rows of film, all pulled from the 1954 Audrey Hepburn classic Sabrina.

Emma Chamberlain was the first guest to arrive at the 2026 Met Gala red carpet, and the first to ace the theme. She teamed up with Mugler creative director Miguel Castro Freitas on a gown resembling a palette mid-painting session. The skirt's layers (and layers!) of chiffon paid homage to the process of creating art as much as the finished project—which, in Chamberlain's case, could easily go on display. Later on in the evening, this gown transformed into a neat, knee-length sheath.

Chase Sui Wonders wearing McQueen

A Met Gala red carpet debut becomes part of a star's fashion legacy. Chase Sui Wonders decided hers with this regal McQueen dress. It toes the line between red carpet risk-taking and gala benefit elegance, thanks to its semi-sheer fabric and artful, oversized bow perched on her shoulder.

Teyana Taylor wearing Tom Ford by Haider Ackermann

Some of the gowns on our best-dressed list celebrated art that froze a moment in time. Teyana Taylor, on the other hand, decided to emphasize the body in motion with her fringed Tom Ford by Haider Ackermann dress. The silver tinsel poured off her dress and matching cap like liquid metal—and as she swished up the Met Gala steps, I couldn't help wishing for a slow-mo video of her ascent.

Laufey wearing Tory Burch

Sometimes, you need a dose of minimalism amid the Met Gala fashion madness. Grammy-winner Laufey made the best-dressed list by setting aside her usual retro style and honing in on a streamlined, almost bridal Tory Burch dress. It's woven from a cream-and-silver brocade, with a matching drawstring bag. She's the calm in the Met Gala storm—and inspo for brides-to-be up and down the red carpet.

Alex Consani wearing Gucci

Plenty of stars interpreted the "Fashion Is Art" dress code to mean half-undressing on the Met Gala red carpet, including both Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner. But supermodel-on-the-rise Alex Consani is the one whose take deserves a second shout-out here. Her Gucci dress is Demna's first Met Gala creation for the house, one that brought the same zest as Consani's signature backstage soundbites. Her description? "A lot of feathers, a lot of tinsel, a lot of energy." I felt it even through the screen.

Hailey Bieber wearing Saint Laurent

I know, I know: Hailey Bieber and Saint Laurent have been Met Gala dates for several years now. But it's worth commending the Rhode mogul for branching out of her LBD mold and into something more experimental: a golden breastplate set against a skirt and chiffon cape drenched in archival YSL "majorelle" blue. If the armour up top looks like it's precisely fit to Bieber's measurements, that's because it's a bit of red carpet metallurgy magic: "It's a real sculpting to my body," she confirmed.

It takes a true fashion insider like Paloma Elsesser to do the homework on a noteworthy Met Gala red-carpet gown. To make this year's best-dressed list, she and Francesco Risso of Bureau of Imagination didn't settle for simply cutting a piece of fabric. Together, she said, "We sourced from eBay using 100 dresses from the 20s, 30s, and 40s." Given all the work that went into constructing it, "I am so proud to wear this," Elsesser said.

Presenting another Met Gala red carpet debut attendee who's making the best-dressed list on her first try. Armed with styling duo Wayman + Micah and the surrealist paint strokes of her Thom Browne dress, One Battle After Another and The Testaments breakout star Chase Infiniti proved her run of awards season red carpets was just the start of cementing her fashion legacy.

Some Met Gala best-dressed entries are better late than never, Rihanna's most of all. After the livestream had officially wrapped, the Fenty Beauty mogul departed from her hotel in a crinkly Maison Margiela by Glenn Martens Fall 2025 look. In a previous interview with Marie Claire, Martens told us he designs with the intention of getting people to do a double take—wondering what the hell, exactly, they're looking at. The reigning queen of the Met Gala definitely upheld Martens's very specific legacy in her metallic cocoon, which unfolded to reveal a bodice absolutely dripping with embellishments.

At its very best, beauty at the Met Gala isn’t just about trends—it’s storytelling. And last night, Black beauty told a story of resistance, artistry, and pride. In every swoop of an edge, every gravity-defying curl, and every nod to icons like Zora Neale Hurston or Josephine Baker, there was a reminder that Blackness is not a theme, it’s a legacy.

This year's Met Gala also proved yet again why it’s fashion’s biggest night out—but this time round, it wasn’t just a celebration of the allure of Black design, but also Black beauty. In a true ode to Dandyism, stars stepped out with grace, reclaiming the cultural legacy of Black style from the clutches of mainstream appropriation—this time, with full authorship.

Hair stylist Devontae Washington stated his mission was “serving big, bouncy glam for my girl", supermodel Precious Lee. It was Dandy in its effortlessness, providing an effortless, voluminous look for the occasion. From intricately laid edges to towering Afros, the night delivered a masterclass in texture, shape and shine, with looks stretching from glossy glam to sharply sculpted contouring.

It encapsulated the theme of “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” in a way that provided a star-studded, in all senses of the word, visual love letter to Black Dandyism and self-expression. Hair, long a cultural cornerstone of Black beauty, took centre stage at yesterday’s event, with some of the night's most exciting looks centred on hairstyles, accessories or makeup.

So, naturally, the night brought out the greats. Artistic displays from Pat McGrath and Charlotte Tilbury to Chanel and Dior, with smaller names, like Kiko, rising to the occasion. Ahead of last night’s celebration, celebrity hairstylist Jawara Wauchope and creative director Jarrod Lacks put on their own show pre-Met Gala. On Friday night, they gave fashion's elite a preview of the brilliance to come—a study in the intimacy and complexity of Black hair on one of the world's biggest stages.

Industry-leading hair stylists, from Cyndia Harvey to Vernon François and Malcolm Marquez, offered sculptural interpretations that pushed the boundaries of traditional hairstyling. These artists, many of whom have long used their craft as protest, struck a perfect balance between reverence and rebellion. It was a captivating marriage of what happens when the world’s greatest creative heads come together to honour the crowns that have come before. The reign of the Dandy called for a masterclass in grooming galore.

Curves, coils, bubble and bounce

Last night’s display served as a potent reminder: Black hair is art, resistance, and legacy, all in one—a harmonious balance of reverie and rebellion. Using a blend of tgin and Dyson tools, stylist Karen Miller sculpted Actress and comedian Quinta Brunson's face-framing curls into a style echoing the glamour of Josephine Baker—structured yet soft, with a modern swoop stamped firmly to her forehead.

Nigerian singer Tems showed out with delicate, finger-curled edges—a recurring signature for her that plays into her playfulness as an artist and Dandy for the night. “To create Tems’ sleek and polished Met Gala look, I relied on two of my go-to Dyson tools—for fast, controlled drying and a smooth, glossy finish,” said hair stylist Ashanti Lation.

How ‘fro can you go?

Apparently, the limit does not exist. With Dandyism deriving largely from West African culture, from the top of one’s head to the curl of one’s shoe, the Afro becomes an apex in its presentation (and preservation). At its core, Black Dandyism is not only about elegance but about gender fluidity and defiance—a reclamation of space that allows Black expression to be opulent, androgynous and unapologetically free. For that reason, it rightfully took centre stage on the decorated carpet this year. Hair stylist and educator Chloe Swift foresaw that "bolder, texture-rich statements that complemented individual looks" would be used to echo the theme’s androgyny. And some of the industry’s greats did just that. From actresses Angela Bassett and Lupita Nyong’o to Lauryn Hill and Cardi B, Dandy was the word, but so was ‘fro. And in a world and culture where the Afro has often been demonised and diminished, last night was a prime opportunity to celebrate the hairstyle in all of its curly and coily glory, with these leading ladies flaunting the perfect ode to a key part of Dandyism.

Glitz and glam, gleam and glow

As with many Met’s, so much of the magic lies in the hands of the make-up artists and the touch of their brushes. This year, offered a slightly more tame approach to the extravagance of it all. Rihanna, Zendaya and Megan Thee Stallion opted for soft-focus beauty—barely-there bases made radiant with strategic shimmer.

Glam teams (for Rihanna, Fenty Beauty Global Make-up Artist and friend Priscilla Ono and Charlotte Tilbury for Megan Thee Stallion) led with understated drama, proving that minimal can still mesmerise. Both used the new Big Lip Plumpgasm Gloss in Nudegasm Diamonds to bring some of that shimmer and shine into otherwise matte bases.

In a sea of sculptural gowns, sequins and extra-special jewellery pieces, it takes a lot to stand out. Yet that’s the entire aim of the Met Gala game—besides the charity fund raising, of course. So unsurprisingly, the famous faces who walk the red carpet pull out all the stops, and this year, a number of celebrities and their chosen design teams certainly gave it their all.

Diana Ross’ 18-foot feathered cape, Jodie Turner-Smith's dramatic burgundy leather Burberry look, and Lewis Hamilton’s all-white suit all had every fashion fan in awe, while simultaneously nailing the event theme of 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style' . Yet it’s Colombian singer Maluma who may have won the award for the most expensive outfit of the night—and it's all thanks to one watch.

Yes, you read that right: Maluma's attention-grabbing timepiece is valued at an incredible $5,000,000 (around £3.7 million).

Named the Emerald Billionaire III, for obvious reasons, this glorious green Jacob & Co watch holds 714 natural, no-heat emeralds and one white rose-cut ruby, all set in 18k white gold—and it's one of a kind.

Obviously, this makes it quite the showstopper, and it seamlessly shone out from the artist’s green and blue Willy Chavarria suit. You can see the piece in more detail below.

Perhaps even more surprising, however, is that Maluma's uber-luxury watch isn’t the most expensive jewellery piece to grace the Met Gala red carpet. Pipping the singer to the post are Dua Lipa, who wore a Tiffany & Co. Lucida Star diamond necklace worth over $10 million (£7.5 million) to the event in 2023; Jennifer Lopez's 2019 look that was dripping in Harry Winston diamonds and estimated to total around $8.8 million (£6.6 million), of course, Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ 2023 Laguna Blu diamond Bulgari necklace rumoured to cost around $25 million (£18.7 million). We look forward to seeing which out-of-this-world bejewelled wonders next year's event brings...

There's a reason the Met Gala is dubbed 'the biggest night in fashion'. Not only is the event one of the industry's most significant fund-raisers and a gargantuan operation that takes multiple teams months to organise, but with the whole world's eyes fixed on the red carpet, it's also the ultimate opportunity for celebrities and brands to showcase their sartorial nous.

Inevitably, given the super-strict guest-list, tables priced from $350,000 and A-list ambassador contracts, it's the big-name luxury fashion houses that tend to dominate at the event. And while this remained the case at the 2025 Met Gala, it was the new generation of British designers who were the undisputed—and delightfully unexpected—breakout stars of the red carpet.

For last night's event, a number of the world's most prominent stars celebrated emerging British design talent with their chosen looks, each with their own unique take on the 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style' theme.

The White Lotus actor Aimee Lou Wood paid homage to the style of Congolese Sapeurs in a black wool coat, silk sash and white cotton shirt combo courtesy of London-based designer Priya Ahluwalia—who also dressed athlete Gabrielle Thomas in a dramatic beaded red gown for her eponymous brand's Met Gala debut.

Kendall Jenner, meanwhile, made her eleventh Met Gala appearance in a striking grey tailored skirt suit from Torishéju. The independent label was founded by North-West London-born designer Torishéju Dumi, and has already been worn by the likes of Zendaya and Naomi Campbell—but the steps of the Met bring a whole new level of exposure that will likely propel the brand to the big-time.

Fellow London-based designer Grace Wales Bonner's namesake brand also made its Met Gala debut at the 2025 event, courtesy of some of the night's most hotly anticipated guests. Lewis Hamilton opted for an ivory suit—plus a matching beret by Stephen Jones, yet another Brit—while FKA Twigs was by far one of the best-dressed in a Twenties-style flapper dress inspired by the legendary Josephine Baker.

Wales Bonner also dressed Omar Apollo, Jeff Goldblum, Tyler Mitchell and Antwaun Sargent on the night, sat on the event committee, and boasts multiple pieces displayed in the Costume Institute's exhibition themed around Black dandies.

Given the 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style' exhibition is the first since 2003 to focus exclusively on menswear, it stands to reason that the male guests went bigger and bolder than ever with their looks for the event.

Among the standouts from the night were Nick Jonas and NFL star Stefon Diggs, whose looks were designed by born-and-raised Londoner Bianca Saunders—while former British Vogue editor Edward Enninful especially nailed the theme in a bespoke suit from Casely-Hayford, one of the most prominent Black British tailoring houses in history.

The Met Gala is the event that keeps on giving, serving up a whole host of beauty looks that not only cement new trends but also revive those we thought we'd left behind. One recurring theme I couldn't help but notice? The official return of the blurred, matte finish, be it in form of a soft-focused base or a diffused lip.

Gigi Hadid, for one, walked the blue carpet while rocking a fully matte, bronzy base, accompanied by an equally stunning matte lip combo. Elsewhere, Doja Cat rocked a bold red lip paired with matte pastel eyeshadow, and Shakira delivered a soft look with a cloud-like finish and a wash of pink to tie everything together.

That said, matte makeup isn't particularly new to any seasoned beauty lover. In fact, over the past year, we've seen a big resurgence of beauty launches that play into the whole "soft blurred" look (think: powder blushes, matte lip balms, soft-focused foundations and the list goes on). And as much as I, a beauty journalist obsessed with all things dewy, hate to admit, I also found myself avoiding overly glow-boosting formulas in favour of blurring products.

The Met Gala also proved that although matte makeup comes with its own set of cons (namely a cake-y finish and a heavy look), the truth is, when it's done right, it can serve a whole different purpose. Instead of further emphasising your skin's texture, quality matte makeup products can help diffuse it without weighing down your makeup.

If anything, the night’s modern take on matte makeup looks was a testament to just how versatile it can be. Whether you're after a something a bit more natural like Lisa's Met Gala look, something more romantic and soft like Lana Del Rey or all-out glam à la Sabrina Carpenter, the bottom line is that you can easily achieve any level of glam without worrying about looking "flat" or "dull" altogether. Plus, with the right skin prep, even the most mattifying products won't cling to dry patches or lift throughout the night.

Now, let's unpack some of my favourite blurred looks of the night.

A matte nude lip from Lana Del Rey

In keeping with her signature aesthetic, Lana delivered the most soft and romantic makeup look of the evening, serving up a blurred base, a muted matte nude lip and a diffused peachy blush to marry everything together.

A sculpted soft-focused glam from Gigi Hadid

Gigi's sculpted complexion is one for the history books. For her Met Gala look, she opted for a soft-matte base and a gorgeous mauve lip to go with it.

A bold matte moment from Doja Cat

Doja's bold make-up look was a true head-turner. Her matte red lip was a nice contrast to her diffused pastel blue and lilac eyeshadow, and came complete with a smooth, blurred base.

Lizzo's smoked-out matte eyeshadow

Lizzo's choice of matte complexion makeup products worked great with her elegant look, and her matte eyeshadow beautifully complemented her dark lip.

A matte blush moment from Sabrina Carpenter

Sabrina Carpenter is known for her bold blush, and for this year's Met Gala, the pop singer's opted for a fully matte finish, which added a nice touch to her "all-out glam" makeup look.

One of the most hotly anticipated red-carpet events in the fashion calendar—if not, the whole world—the 2025 Met Gala took place in New York last night, with major celebrities descending on the Metropolitan Museum of Art in dazzling designer looks for the occasion.

This year's theme was 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style', in line with the Costume Institute's spring exhibition—and guests certainly got creative with their sartorial interpretations of the dress code. Many chose to champion Black designers on the night, while tailoring and ensembles inspired by the dandyism movement were also prominent on the red carpet.

And while all the stars brought their fashion A-game to the legendary steps of the Met, some were simply a cut above the rest. So, after much deliberation, we bring you Marie Claire UK's definitive list of the 15 best dressed celebrities at the 2025 Met Gala.

From Rihanna in Marc Jacobs and Doechii in Louis Vuitton, to FKA Twigs flying the flag for British brand Wales Bonner, these were our favourite fashion moments from the night.

In what will likely go down as the most iconic pregnancy announcements of all time, Rihanna stepped onto the red carpet in a custom-made, bump-revealing look by Marc Jacobs.

Doja Cat

The singer stunned in an Eighties-inspired look by Marc Jacobs, complete with dramatic shoulder pads and an animal-print bustier.

Doechii

Doechii quite literally rocked Louis Vuitton from head to toe for her Met Gala debut, in a Pharrell-designed short suit, knee-high socks, chunky flats and a logo embellishment on her cheek.

Diana Ross

Diana Ross made a grand return to the Met Gala red carpet some 22 years after her last appearance, so naturally she had to bring the drama for the occasion. The legendary singer did just that in an 18-foot feathered cape embroidered with the names of her children and grandchildren, styled with a silver embellished gown and supersize headpiece.

Janelle Monáe

Never one to do things by halves, Monáe wore two custom Thom Browne looks created in collaboration with award-winning costume designer Paul Tazewell.

Zendaya

Zendaya's supremely chic white suit was designed by Pharrell Williams for Louis Vuitton, and paid sartorial homage to the 'zoot suits' that were staples of the Black dandyism movement.

Gigi Hadid

Gigi Hadid's interpretation of the Met Gala theme was decidedly different from the rest, and all the better for it. Styled by Gabriella Karefa-Johnson and custom-made by Miu Miu, her golden gown referenced a dress worn by Josephine Baker that was made by Black couture dressmaker Zelda Wynn Valdes.

FKA Twigs

FKA Twigs flew the flag for British design talent in a Twenties-style flapper dress by Grace Wales Bonner, also inspired by the legendary Josephine Baker. Her shoes were a custom design by Manolo Blahnik.

Jodie Turner-Smith

Turner-Smith's burgundy leather Burberry look was nothing short of a triumph, and inspired by an 1891 portrait of Black equestrian Selina Lazevski, during the Belle Époque in Paris. Diamond jewels by MARLI New York completed the ensemble.

Laura Harrier

Gap's Creative Director Zac Posen looked to archival photos of Harrier's father and grandfather dressed in their Sunday best as inspiration for the actor's red carpet look. We love the resulting GapStudio look, made from industrial raw unbleached denim and duchesse silk-satin for a dramatic contrast.

Alicia Keys

The singer brought some much-needed colour and pattern to the Met Gala steps, in a burgundy pinstripe suit by Moncler, co-ordinating puffer shawl, beaded headpiece and jewellery from Ara Vartanian.

Jennie

The Blackpink star and Chanel ambassador stunned in a black and white tuxedo gown by the French fashion house.

Jenna Ortega

Ortega's Balmain gown was made entirely from metal rulers used by pattern-makers, taking the night's 'Tailored For You' dress code quite literally.

Ayo Edebiri

The Bear star's embellished dress and leather tailcoat were designed by Maximilian Davis for Ferragamo, and inspired by the 'Dandiest men' in her family, her dad and grandfather.

Zoe Saldaña

Saldaña stunned in a sculpted suit corset gown by Thom Browne.

If I asked you to list the designer brands you’d expect to find worn on the Met Gala red carpet, I’m sure I’d hear a chorus of the usual suspects. Louis Vuitton? A stalwart. Chanel? Of Course. eBay? Now, that’s a name that may give you pause. Yet, that’s exactly who two of the celebrities on our best dressed list turned to when it came to this year's Met Gala.

First up, and early to the red carpet ahead of her hosting debut, was Emma Chamberlain who stepped out in a pinstripe dress from Courreges paired with vintage eBay accessories. On TikTok she shared, “I’ve been shopping vintage for years and to me it’s always been kind of a dream to wear vintage for my Met look and that’s never really worked out and this year it did.”

While she’s yet to share which of her accessories were from eBay, she paired her backless gown with a pair of mini oval glasses, elbow length gloves and black court heels, all of which looked incredibly chic against the floor length maxi dress.

And, she wasn’t the only one shopping from eBay this year. When it came to chic menswear styling, actor Jeremy Pope set the bar. Styled by Law Roach, his mannequin-inspired vest (a Maison Margiela FW97 runway piece) was paired with custom eBay tailored trousers and perfectly tapped into this year's theme of tailoring dandy style and the tailored for your dress code.

If you need final proof that eBay really are red carpet approved, there’s only one man to look to. The stylist behind Zendaya’s iconic looks, Law Roach, of course knows a thing or two about seriously great style and he let us in on a secret from the Met Gala red carpet—eBay is a great place to source fashion.

Roach's look for the evening was custom Burberry with accessories from eBay that included a Tiffany brooch, Cartier ring, and Patek Philippe watch.

One thing's for sure: if the iconic archival designer looks we’ve seen Zendaya in over the years are anything to go by, he might be onto something.

The 2025 Met Gala is well and truly underway, with a host of stylish celebs hitting the red carpet and offering their take on this year's theme: Black Dandyism. Yet while the outfits are delivering, I can’t keep my eyes off one element in particular—the jewellery.

This year, major sparkle is on the menu with show-stopping jewels providing the ultimate finishing touch to these superfine styles. From statement brooches paired with slick tailoring to vintage-inspired necklaces worn alongside caped gowns and sleek shirting alike, these pieces are so much more than just an accessory.

But, while statement pieces are definitely leading the way, they aren't the only jewellery trends making an appearance at this year's Met. On the more wearable side, many have opted for elegant pearls and delicate necklaces, proving there's always space for dainty jewels too.

Rihanna’s arrival on the Met Gala red carpet is always a moment that both fashion lovers and fans await with bated breath. However, this year, it’s not her take on the theme that excited everyone.

Arriving at the Metropolitan Museum of Art earlier today, the singer stepped out in a fitted grey two-piece revealing a big surprise: she’s pregnant.

Currently, the singer has two children, RZA and Riot, with partner A$AP Rocky; however, it appears congratulations are in order as a third isn't far behind.

To show off her growing baby bump, RiRi opted for a ribbed co-ord from Miu Miu worn alongside coordinating grey knee-length socks and court heels.

She accessorised the look with a dark grey bucket hat and a fur stole, possibly nodding to the look she’d be stepping out in that evening.

This won’t be the first time Rihanna has taken to the Met Gala red carpet with a baby bump. In 2023, while pregnant with the couple's second child Riot, she opted for a white floral hood and floor length gown by Valentino.

Sydney Sweeney served up a smoked-out cat-eye look, complete with a soft-matte base and a glossy pink lip—a great addition to her slick updo.

Sabrina Carpenter

Signature to her "old glamour" aesthetic, Sabrina Carpenter delivered big, bouncy hair with a side-swept fringe, complete with an equally stunning makeup look that featured mauve-y and burgundy tones to complement her outfit, courtesy of Prada Beauty.

Lupita Nyong'o

Lupita Nyong'o's look was, by far, one of the most impressive. Her glowy complexion paired well with a soft mauve-y blush, with the standout element being her glittery brows.

The Met Gala, an iconic event that celebrates both fashion and art, has long been known for its extravagant displays of creativity and culture. But this year, the theme 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style' promises to explore a deeper, more meaningful conversation about fashion's history and the often overlooked narratives within it. Among those whose stories remain on the fringes, is a movement called dandyism which celebrates black culture and the legacy of black tailoring, an art form that has shaped men’s fashion but often been neglected in the mainstream discourse.

At its core, dandyism is more than just a fashion statement; it’s a cultural movement steeped in individualism, refinement, and defiance. Dandyism emerged in the early 19th century as a rejection of the current social norms, with figures like Beau Brummell leading the way. Known for his sharp suits, impeccable grooming, and disdain for excessive ornamentation, Brummell defined dandyism as a pursuit of understated elegance. His style wasn’t just about clothes, it was a statement about identity, power, and how to navigate the world with grace and control.

But dandyism, particularly in the 19th century, was predominantly a European and white construct. Its origin in the salons of London and Paris was tightly bound to class and privilege. Over time, however, dandyism evolved and transcended its initial confines, influencing fashion movements and giving rise to new interpretations in different cultures and communities.

One of the most powerful reinterpretations of dandyism emerged from the Black diaspora. From Harlem to London, black men began to adopt and adapt the dandy style, infusing it with their own rich cultural influences, history, and personal expression. The Black dandy, an embodiment of style, intellect, and social defiance became a symbol of resistance in the face of racial inequality and discrimination.

For black men and women, the movement was often used to challenge stereotypes and elevate their status in society. The sharpness of a suit, the care in a tie, the elegance of a pocket square, these were not just accessories but shields against the prejudice and limitations imposed on them. In a world that sought to marginalise their humanity, the black dandy stood tall, claiming space and style as acts of self-empowerment, even in places that didn’t fully embrace them.

The Met Gala has often been criticised for choosing themes that can feel arbitrary, such as last year’s “Camp: Notes on Fashion” or “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” These themes, while fun, often prioritise spectacle over substance, focusing on surface-level trends rather than exploring the deeper stories that shape fashion’s evolution.

So this year, announced by co-chairs ASAP Rocky Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo and Lewis Hamilton; men that have dabbled in dandyism in their own style evolutions, the Met Gala has an opportunity to engage in a more meaningful dialogue. One that explores the intersection of history, culture, and fashion. This theme moves away from the notion of a "random trend" and delves into a historic fashion legacy.

The combination of these legacies at the Met Gala signifies a shift toward a more inclusive and historically conscious approach to fashion. It encourages the fashion community to look beyond fleeting trends and towards a more profound understanding of fashion’s power to shape society.

The theme becomes a celebration of individuality, not just as a form of personal expression, but as a political statement and an acknowledgement of the struggle for visibility, recognition, and respect.

Including Black dandyism in the Met Gala’s theme also challenges the fashion industry to face its historical erasures. It’s a chance to highlight how Black culture has influenced and reshaped European fashion traditions, even though these contributions have too often been overlooked. By celebrating both legacies, the Met Gala is attempting to blend these two powerful cultural movements one rooted in European elegance while the other in Black resistance and cultural innovation. This fusion is more than just fashion; it’s about reclaiming space, acknowledging forgotten histories, and pushing the boundaries of what fashion can represent.

In a world where fashion often mirrors the dominant cultural narratives, this year’s Met Gala invites a refreshing change. It’s not just about the glamour, it’s about sparking meaningful conversations, telling untold stories, and honouring legacies that are long overdue for recognition.

5 Black “Dandy” designers to watch and know:

Ozwald Boateng

London-born and of Ghanaian heritage Ozwald Boateng began designing suits at 16. In 1989 he officially launched his Saville row namesake brand that would go on to change the face of British tailoring.

Andrew Ramroop

London-born and of Ghanaian heritage, Andrew Ramroop made history in 1988 when he became the first Black business owner on Savile Row, assuming ownership of the Maurice Sedwell tailoring house. He founded the Savile Row Bespoke Academy (SRBA), a specialist school for aspiring tailors, in 2008.

Dapper Dan

Daniel day, famously known as dapper dan, is an American fashion designer and haberdasher from Harlem, New York. His Harlem storefront, Dapper Dan’s Boutique, opened in 1982 and is known for its unique blend of high fashion and street style.

Maurice Sedwell

Sedwell was first established on Fleet Street in London by Maurice Sedwell in 1938. He later won the Gold Medal from the Tailor & Cutter Academy, competing with the best tailors in the country. In 1988, the company was purchased from the retiring Maurice Sedwell by Andrew Ramroop, a long-standing employee.

Casely-Hayford

Joe Casely-Hayford OBE (1956–2019) was a pioneering British designer whose four-decade career helped shape 21st-century style. Known for blending tailoring with streetwear and merging establishment aesthetics with punk influences, he created a distinct design language that inspired a new generation.

Casely-Hayford began producing collections in 1983 under the label Kit, offering original yet wearable clothing that reached over 150 stores worldwide. In 2009, he and his son Charlie Casely-Hayford launched the luxury menswear brand Casely-Hayford, continuing his legacy of innovation.

The 2025 Met Gala is just months away, with A-listers set to descend on New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art to attend this year's Costume Institute Benefit.

This year's Met Gala is set to be chaired by Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour, with LeBron James coming onboard as an Honorary Chair.

And the annual event's 2025 theme has been confirmed as "Tailed for You", tying in with the Metropolitan Museum's Spring 2025 exhibition: "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style".

It was the guest list that made headlines this week, as TMZ reported that Met Gala regulars Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds would not be in attendance this year.

This comes amid a difficult year for the A-list couple, with Lively locked in a legal battle with her It Ends With Us director and co-star, Justin Baldoni.

Lively took legal action against Baldoni in December 2024, accusing him of sexual harassment and for allegedly coordinating a smear campaign against her. Baldoni then filed a $400 million lawsuit against Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and Lively's publicist, Leslie Sloane - suing the trio for defamation.

And with a trial set for March 2026, it was thought that the ongoing legal proceedings could have been the reason behind the couple's decision to skip the Met Gala this year.

However, it has been pointed out by insiders that Lively and Reynolds have actually not attended the Met Gala for years, making their last appearance in 2022 when they were co-chairs at the Costume Institute Benefit. And sources have since explained that there is nothing major to read into regarding their absence.

"Blake and Ryan haven’t gone since 2022, when they were co-chairs, and they will not be in attendance this year," a source has explained via People. "She’s not a Kardashian that goes every year," added a separate source via Us Weekly.

The 2025 Met Gala will take place on Monday 5 May, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City.

This week saw the 2024 Met Gala, with A-listers descending on New York City to attend this year's Costume Institute Benefit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Monday night's Met Gala was chaired by Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth. Not to mention, Met trustee and Vogue Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour, who was joined by two honorary chairs - Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew.

The annual event makes the most headlines however for its red carpet, and with the 2024 dress code being “The Garden of Time”, inspired by the 1962 short story by J.G. Ballard, this year was no exception.

A-listers in their hundreds sported melancholic florals and gothic lace, with Zendaya even incorporating an outfit change, and walking the red carpet twice. 

The most talked-about look of the night was undoubtedly from Kim Kardashian. The 43-year-old wore a Custom Maison Margiela Couture gown, accessorising the silver corset-style dress with a grey cardigan - something that has baffled the internet. 

Swifties believe they have an explanation however, with many theorising that the surprising look from Kim K is a message to Taylor Swift.

Swift's recent album, The Tortured Poets Department, features a song about a high school bully that is rumoured to be about Kardashian, entitled 'thanK you aIMee', with the two women reported to have been in a "long-standing feud".

Along with her album, Swift also released a line of Tortured Poets grey cardigans on her online store, with fans believing that this inspired Kardashian's decision to wear one - either as an olive branch or a clap back.

"Kim Kardashian is wearing the Tortured Poets Department cardigan to the Met Gala!", one X user posted to the platform. Another added: "Love the TTPD cardigan, Aimee." 

It is not known whether the outfit really is a Taylor Swift reference, with Kardashian explaining on the night of the Met Gala that the decision simply came from being in a rush.

"This is like the wildest night of my life in a garden," she recalled. "And I just ran out and grabbed my boyfriend’s sweater and threw it on and had to get to work. And my hair’s all messed up."

As a Met Gala stalwart and one of the world’s most famous faces, it was inevitable that all eyes would be on Kim Kardashian as she walked the Met Gala red (or, to be precise, cream and green) carpet outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art last night (Monday 6th May).

For her 11th year attending fashion’s most talked-about event, Kim opted for a custom look from John Galliano for Maison Margiela in response to ‘The Garden of Time’ dress code: a corset-style dress with a very cinched waist that exaggerated her hourglass shape. But fans aren’t convinced the restrictive gown is safe.

The dress is a nod to Galliano’s spring 2024 Margiela Artisanal show during Paris Fashion Week, which featured 19th-century corsets and full skirts in a tribute to the romanticism of the Belle Époque era. Kim attended the haute couture, front row, alongside her mother Kris Jenner and sister Kylie Jenner.

Kim’s Met Gala gown reflected the extreme silhouettes of the period, with a tight lace bodice and sheer floral cut-out dress over the top, somewhat surprisingly teamed with a more casual grey bolero-style knit. The metallic finish of Kim’s corset only adds to its restrictive appearance.

Kim, who is renowned for her exaggerated silhouette (having famously “broken the internet” with her extreme proportions, has long peddled waist trainers. However, cosmetic surgeon and body confidence expert Dr Paul Banwell has warned of the dangers of tightly wound corsets.

One Met Gala fan commenting on X (formerly Twitter): “How is Kim Kardashian breathing? Her waist looks so small in that omg.” While another wrote, “Don’t like kim kardashian and don’t care about her but that corset thing is??? that must hurt like hell??” While a third commented: “Kim kardashian’s waist is absurd. like not to be a hater but it actually is concerning especially when ppl aspire to be like her. sorry.”

Another X user responded with the retort: "Gurl corsets been existing for centuries get some culture." While this social media user certainly has a point, should the A-list be championing corsets in 2024, particularly considering not only that they're deeply uncomfortable, but also what they represent historically?

As historian David Kunzle writes in Fashion and Fetishism, corsets were one of the "quintessential Victorian social horrors". Linked to fainting, reduced lung capacity and, in extreme cases, organ deformity, it's no exaggeration to describe extreme corsetry as a Patriachal horror. “Corsets caused indigestion, constipation, often led to fainting from breathing difficulties and even caused internal haemorrhages,” says Dr Paul Banwell remarking on the garment's dark past. He adds that in 1887, at the height of corset fashion, a list of 97 diseases caused by wearing a corset was published.

As Kunzle explains, "the forcing of young females into narrow corsets being regarded as morally and hygienically on a par with the forcing of small boys into narrow chimneys". It's not so glamorous when you put it that way.

Corsets fell out of fashion in the 1920s, but the pressure for a cinched waist remained, replaced by the less extreme, but still restrictive, girdle. Cue the second-wave feminism of the '60s and '70s, and we clapped off the corset and its later iterations for good—at least in the world outside of fashion runways and red carpets.

It feels somewhat archaic to see this restrictive item chosen by the fashion set, but then again, the corset has always been championed by the elite.

Arianna Grande's Met Gala gown paid homage to the Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion theme with its ethereal styling, but the eye is immediately drawn to her tiny waist bound in a structured bodice. Kylie Jenner walked the carpet in a strapless gown by Oscar de la Renta with a severe-looking bonded bodice contouring her shape.

Of course, it's not the first time we've seen Kim push the boundaries when it comes to exaggerated silhouettes. For 2019's Notes on Camp theme, she wore a skin-tight, latex corset dress, while 2022 saw Kim again champion the 'hourglass' ideal with Marilyn Monroe's Happy Birthday Mr President dress, originally designed by Jean Louis in 1962.

We know the Kardashians and Jenners are no strangers to advocating for unattainable beauty standards. Still, it would be refreshing to see Kim mark her 12th year at the Met Gala with a look that breaks away from outdated and—quite literally—restrictive ideals.

On Monday (6th May), fashion paid tribute to the natural world at the glitziest event on the fashion calendar - the Met Gala. Although the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual celebration honoured the Costume Institute’s Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion exhibition, the dress code was “The Garden of Time”. Referencing J.G. Ballard’s short story of the same name, guests were invited to embrace the ethereal theme. As expected, many donned creations drawn from the natural world, sparking a thousand “Florals for spring? Groundbreaking” memes.

Less explicit references to Ballard’s 1962 tale could be glimpsed in the futuristic designs that championed the natural world in more opaque ways, namely through sustainable practices and emerging technologies. The latter was a literary trope of the English novelist, who explored sci-fi and dystopia in his writing decades before we’d ever watched Black Mirror.

'Fleeting beauty' was the ominous directive to guests from Met Gala curator and Vogue Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour. Stars including Jennifer Lopez, Charlie XCX, and Amanda Seyfried played with the dress code more experimentally, nodding to the moral in Ballard’s sci-fi fable; that time eventually runs out for everyone. Fleeting beauty, indeed.

As “the internet’s libraria,” Jack Edwards explains,” on TikTok, The Garden of Time revolves around a character named Count Axel and his wife, who live in an extravagant villa brimming with rare books and antiques. But shattering their lavish domesticity is an encroaching mob. To keep the rabble at bay, the Count cuts a “time flower” from his garden, temporarily making the masses retreat, but eventually, the couple runs out of these “time flowers.”

Edwards’ theory is that the short story “represents this human cycle of creation and destruction.” Seen through this literary lens, the Met Gala dress code seems a surprising choice, given the industry’s long-standing love of nature and simultaneous involvement with its destruction. While Ballard is perhaps best associated with a sense of dystopia, he was ultimately a futurist. His stories spoke to the climate crisis decades before it became a part of everyday conversation.

The Met Gala has never been for the masses, but what happens in the highest echelons of fashion undoubtedly impacts the industry at large. As the Global Fashion Agenda reports; “In many ways, the Met Gala serves as a bellwether for the broader industry, signalling that vintage and pre-loved goods are only going to increase in popularity.”

While many guests played into the horticultural element explicitly referenced in the dress code, here, we look at the more inventive explorations of The Garden of Time and pay homage to the industry futurists who are leading the way in more sustainable and slower fashion.

Jennifer Lopez is no stranger to a dramatic red carpet moment and 2024's Met Gala saw the star dazzle in an intricate butterfly-themed gown that took over 800 hours to craft.

The actor and singer wore a striking custom Schiaparelli haute couture dress on the Met Gala red carpet, dreamed up by American designer Daniel Roseberry.

As co-chair of the event, it's no surprise that J-Lo nailed the Met Gala dress code, which was based on The Garden of Time, a short story by British writer J.G Ballard. Along with the Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion theme, this year's organisers encouraged guests to think about fleeting beauty and all things ephemeral—an idea perfectly encapsulated by the butterfly motif.

"The inspiration for this look was a butterfly transforming into something beautiful,” celebrity hairstylist Lorenzo Martin told Vogue. "Just like a butterfly, we wanted the hair to be angelic, fresh, and beautiful."

Jen kept her hair and make-up classic and neutral to let her eye-catching gown shine, with glowing skin, nude lips and a slightly undone bun with texture around the hairline.

To say J-Lo's dress is intricate is an understatement. It took over 2.5 million silver foil bugle beads to craft the designer gown, which equates to 800 hours of hand embroidery work, according to reporting from Glamour.

Jen's makeup artist Scott Barnes explained further how J-Lo's glam squad embraced the butterfly theme, writing in an Instagram post with a collection of videos of the star: "The butterfly is a perfect articulation of a sleeping beauty. Something that goes to sleep and wakes up beautiful also still lives in a garden without being a flower.

"The butterfly and [the] idea of metamorphosis has been part of Schiaparelli’s DNA since the beginning. Much more than flowers, the butterfly symbolizes metamorphosis. Transformation. Something that was asleep that wakes up beautiful, powerful, and new."

Jen was asked before the night of the gala whether she'll be able to walk in the look during an appearance on Good Morning America (via PEOPLE), to which the singer and actor responded: "Barely, ever. The Met Gala looks are not about comfort," before adding, "But it’s exciting, it’s exciting. It’s a fun night for fashion."

She then continued: "It’s such an interesting mix of artists and business people. It’s not just music or film, it’s everybody—fashion, film, music, business—and you get to have some really interesting interactions."

Some of the biggest fashion icons of our time came out in full force last night to mark the annual Met Gala fundraising event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.  This year, the theme was centred around 'Sleeping Beauties', which not only added a fairytale element to the evening but also encouraged guests to think about the historic fashion trends that deserve a Rennaisance.

The dress code for the Met Gala red (or should be say cream and green) carpet itself had the theme of The Garden of Time, based on a short story written by English novelist J.G. Ballard. As Miranda Priestly (who was inspired by long-time Met Gala chair Anna Wintour herself) would say: Florals? For the Met Gala? Groundbreaking. But this isn't just any floral theme. 

Ballard was a master of dystopian fiction and his 1962 short story is much darker than your classic fairytale, with the likes of Zendaya and Rebecca Ferguson channelling this with inky colours and gothic motifs. 

What was the Met Gala 2024 theme and dress code?

The theme of the Met Gala 2024 is Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, which nods to the Costume Institute’s new exhibit showcasing around 50 historic pieces of fashion that are so fragile, they could never be worn again. 

The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently issued a press release on the exhibition, explaining it "will explore cyclical themes of rebirth and renewal, breathing new life into these storied objects through creative and immersive activations designed to convey the smells, sounds, textures, and motions of garments that can no longer directly interact with the body."

Meanwhile, the dress code to support this theme is The Garden of Time, based on the Ballardian short story of the same name. The story tells the tale of a Count and Countess who spend their days relaxing in their walled garden, immersing themselves in classical music and art. However, their idyllic existence is interrupted by the arrival of an "immense rabble", who, after storming the aristocratic couple's manicured country garden, destroy every last flower in it. Somewhat ironic, considering the Met Gala is an event for the fashion world's most elite players.

Nevertheless, it's a theme that encouraged guests to think outside the box when it came to horticultural nods and floral themes for gowns, with the results on the red carpet showing varying degrees of commitment. Met Gala watchers were frustrated with some interpretations of the theme, with one writing on X (formerly Twitter): 'The theme is the garden of time, what is so hard about that?' While another wrote: 'Why does nobody understand the theme?' While another wrote: 'Like Y’ALL need to find some new stylists cause this is unacceptable?' 

But not everyone was given a scathing review, with many celebrities channelling the concepts into breathtaking ensembles that ranged from the ethereal to the gothic. These are our favourite takes on The Garden of Time theme.

Who better to conclude with than Anna Wintour herself? The fashion editor wore a black Loewe coat embroidered with bright flowers over a lighter dress. 

Kendall Jenner and Bad Bunny seem to be on very friendly terms following their December breakup.

The supermodel and singer were pictured together at a Met Gala after-party co-hosted by Emily Ratajkowski on Monday. In the photo, which is doing the rounds online, Kendall and Bad Bunny (real name: Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) are sitting on a club bench, looking into each other's eyes and laughing, holding a lowball drink each.

While this moment and the accompanying photo by no means indicates that the two are back together, it clearly shows that there's no hard feelings between them after their split last year.

The 818 Tequila founder and "MONACO" musician first started dating sometime in 2023, with rumours about a potential romance first popping up in February of that year, as reported by People.

After that, the two confirmed their relationship by attending public events as each other's date. For example, they were spotted together in the front row at Milan Fashion Week in September, and courtside at a basketball game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors in LA in May.

Interestingly, Kendall and Benito had already hung out at a Met Gala after-party in 2023. After attending the red-carpet event separately, they were photographed on their way to the celeb-studded bash, with Bad Bunny casually holding an open bottle of champagne as they walked to the venue.

Meanwhile, we already knew that the two former lovebirds were on good terms, since they spent New Year's Eve together along with some of their friends including Justin and Hailey Bieber, according to Marie Claire US.

After their breakup, a source told Entertainment Tonight: "They both knew going into this that it likely wouldn't be a forever type of relationship and that was mutually understood from the get-go. They have crazy busy schedules and know they're still young and have a lot more to experience individually before settling down."

The source added that there "isn’t any negativity between them and they still want the best for one another."

Some celebs are synonymous with the Met Gala: we're thinking of Kim Kardashian, Blake Lively, Beyoncé, Harry Styles, Rihanna, Nicole Kidman...

But this year, some of the New York City fashion event's most faithful attendees ended up skipping it — breaking fans' hearts everywhere.

Here are some of the celebrities who sadly didn't make it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art this year.

RiRi was expected at the event, even showing off her pink hair ahead of time, but she sadly came down with the flu and was unable to attend.

Taylor wasn't at the Met Gala because she's currently preparing to start the European leg of her Eras Tour. The first date is set for 9 May in Paris, France. The singer's absence wasn't the most surprising, however, as she hasn't attended since 2016.

Travis Kelce

Taylor's boyfriend didn't end up attending the Met Gala solo, though he did attend the Kentucky Derby and Miami Grand Prix over the weekend.

Beyoncé

The Cowboy Carter singer didn't grace the Met's iconic steps this year, and hasn't since 2016.

Blake Lively

Blake Lively is responsible for some of the best outfits in Met Gala history, but she opted to skip the event this year.

Ryan Reynolds

Ryan Reynolds followed his wife's lead and was nowhere to be seen on Monday.

Lady Gaga

Gaga unfortunately (for us) hasn't attended the Gala since 2019.

Taylor Swift didn't attend the Met Gala last night, much to the disappointment of Swifties who hoped she'd make her Met Gala red carpet debut with (relatively) new boyfriend Travis Kelce.

Arguably the most prestigious event of the fashion calendar, the Met Gala is a celebration of haute couture, with awe-inspiring gowns and ensembles that tread the line between fashion and art.

This year, the Met Gala fell on Monday 6th May 2024, the same week that Taylor's Eras Tour resumed, kicking off with a stint in Paris on Thursday 9th May. It would have been a very tight squeeze for Taylor, considering there are over three-and-a-half thousand miles between New York and Paris.

Taylor has attended the high fashion event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art six times before, but hasn't been pictured at the event since 2016 when she walked the red (or should we say cream and pink) carpet wearing a Louis Vuitton silver snakeskin dress for the Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology theme.

Though rumours swirled that she might drop into this year's event, PEOPLE reported that Taylor has "had a huge couple of weeks" and will be "focusing on rehearsals and tour prep ahead of her Eras Tour dates".

TMZ had previously reported that Travis and Taylor were both invited to fashion's most prestigious event, but had both already declined.

Taylor's reason for not attending the event was reported to be a commitment clash, while Travis presumably didn't want his first Met Gala rodeo to be without Taylor by his side (though this hasn't been confirmed by the NFL player).

But that didn't spot the speculation that the superstar might make a surprise appearance and wow us all with her fashion prowess.

Fashion legend Anna Wintour herself added fuel to the fire, telling Today host Jenna Bush Hager of Taylor's potential visit (via The Daily Mail): "I hope she comes and enjoys the exhibit."

Taylor wasn't the only big name missed off the guest list for the Met Gala 2024. It was hoped that Beyoncé would also turn up at the 11th hour, but sadly she never graced the Metropolitan Museum of Art steps.

Margot Robbie, Anne Hathaway and Rihanna, who have provided some of the most talked-about looks in Met Gala history, were also notably absent. Margot is currently shooting her new film The Big Bold Beautiful Journey in Los Angeles, a fair trek from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

While it's not clear why after her iconic look for last year's Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, Anne decided to take the year off, she did manage to give some advice to her The Idea of You co-star Nicholas Galitzine, who made his Met Gala debut for 2024. He told reporters on the red carpet (via Vogue Australia): "Have fun, [and] catch up with people!"

PEOPLE suggested that while Rihanna already had her outfit planned for this year's Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion-themed gala, she was devastatingly hit with a bad case of the flu before the event and had to pull out.

British designer Stella McCartney is no stranger to sustainable fashion. Since launching her eponymous clothing label over 23 years ago, she has consistently been a pioneer in ethical fashion, paving the way and advocating for animal rights and more sustainability across the fashion industry. It comes as no surprise that she teamed up with leading lab-grown diamond company VRAI to create bespoke jewellery pieces for her Met Gala guests. VRAI, a company backed by climate change activist and actor Leonardo Di Caprio, used diamonds created in its certified zero-emission foundry and recycled gold, to create one-of-a-kind looks inspired by the Met Gala Costume Institute’s Spring 2024 exhibition – ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.

Actor, activist and face of the Stella McCartney Spring/Summer 2024 campaign, Cara Delevigne wore a bespoke diamond bracelets and a custom hooded, backless bodice co-created by VRAI X Stella McCartney. Featuring over 500 carats of diamonds - the most sustainable look on the Met Gala carpet.

Ahead of her new album release, singer-songwriter FKA Twigs wore a custom delicate bodice and hot pants, hand-embroidered with matrixes of lab-grown diamonds and finished the look with an iconic Stella McCartney Falabella bag, embellished in lead-free crystals.

Marking his Met Gala debut, multiple GRAMMY-winning superstar Ed Sheeran wore a bespoke soft blue iconic Savile Row tuxedo tailoring with VRAI created diamond cufflinks and a bowtie, also encrusted with lab-grown diamonds. His wife Cherry Seaborn wore a selection of VRAI jewellery.

Stella also wore custom Savile Row tailoring over a lab-grown diamond-embroidered bodysuit, one-of-a-kind diamond-encrusted iconic Falabella bag and jewellery, co-created with VRAI using recycled solid gold and sustainably grown diamonds.

New to the world of lab-grown diamonds? Well, to break it down, every carat of VRAI created diamonds produced, saves 143 lbs of carbon dioxide, which is the equivalent to recycling approximately 23 kilograms of waste instead of it going to a landfill. Still not convinced? VRAI created diamonds are cut to the top 1% in the world, using over 243 intricate steps, to cut and polish to the highest standards in the industry - which is why even the highest net-worth fine jewellery customers who would traditionally shop at heritage brands are fast turning their attention (and spending) to lab-grown diamonds. Whilst there is still some work to do with the awareness around sustainable lab-grown diamonds and their importance - moments like these prove progress is being made.

If there’s ever an event to rebel against the beauty trends we’ve become accustomed to seeing, it has to be the Met Gala. A time to embrace the unexpected and push the boundaries of beauty, it’s a red carpet unlike any other, and this year, it definitely didn’t disappoint. From showstopping outfits to exciting beauty looks, all our favourite celebrities took to the cream carpet, with their interpretation of the dress code: The Garden of Time. 

While make-up was definitely on the maximalist side (hello bold blush), there was one unexpected trend that made an appearance and it provided the perfect antidote to the ultra-polished hair looks we’ve been seeing of late. Rather than big, bouncy blowouts, the ultimate Chloé girl squad made up of Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana, and Emma Mackey turned things on their head, opting for a more effortless look with soft, boho-inspired waves making a comeback. The effect? An ethereal pairing perfectly matched with the overall theme of this year’s Met Gala: Sleeping Beauties.

But, while laid-back, lived-in waves were definitely the most popular hair style of choice, a few took it one step further proving this is much more than just a Chloé-girl resurgence. Kim Kardashian’s bleach blonde waves were pulled back into a low, loose plait that was only visible from behind, while Riley Keough adorned her tucked-back wavy style with an ultra-long hair bow that fell like a train past her waist. Proof that more undone looks don’t need to be boring? We think so. 

If you want to try the look for yourself, the trick is to work with your hair's natural texture. For naturally wavy hair, a spritz of salt spray will help give movement and enhance your shape while straight-haired girls may need to add a texture spray to add grit and hold. For those with naturally curly hair, a waving tong will help manipulate your hair into looser bends. Then simply leave it as is or add your favourite hair accessory to take the look to the next level.

Last night's Met Gala was, as always, like watching fashion come to life. The "First Monday in May" was to celebrate the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual fashion exhibition. The theme this year was "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion", which showcases archival pieces that have been deemed too fragile to be worn again. However, the dress code given to all attendees was: "The Garden of Time" inspired by a 1962 short story by J.G. Ballard. And we really did see that reflected in what the stars wore and how they chose to have their hair and make-up. 

Some of the industry's biggest names took to the red carpet (which was actually green in a nod to the dress code) and showcased their interpretations. Among those was Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor, who was wearing Victoria Beckham's first-ever custom gown. She arrived on the arm of legendary make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury, who was responsible for Dynevor's beautiful make-up.

Sofia prepped the skin with the brand's Magic Serum Crystal Elixir, followed by the iconic Charlotte's Magic Cream. 

To create the luminous soft focus effect on the skin, she used the Beautiful Skin Foundation in 3N and set the base with Airbrush Flawless Finish in 1. 

Blush was back in a big way at this year's celebration and to get that pinched cheek effect that looks stunning on a fair complexion like Dynevor's, she used the Pillow Talk Matte Beauty Blush Wand in Dream Pop. To add highlight she dusted the skin with Pillow Talk Multi-Glow in Romance Light. 

The brand's famous Pillow Talk collection featured heavily in Sofia Tilbury's make-up kit last night, which is no surprise as the pinky nude hue is the perfect shade for this look.

To define the brows, she filled them in with Brow Cheat in Taupe. There was a hint of a iridescent shimmer on the eyelid, with particular focus on the inner corner of the eye, which was created using the Super Nudes Easy Eye Palette. To make the eyes pop, without adding too much drama, Dynevor's lashes were coated in Pillow Talk Push-up Lashes Mascara - which is a berry brown shade and one of the best coloured mascaras, as it adds to the softness of the look.

The final piece of the puzzle came from the brand's bestselling lipstick formula Matte Revolution. From the Hollywood Beauty Icon collection, Tilbury patted the shade Pizzazz 'onto the centre and blended out'.

Sheer dresses, corsets, floral appliques, and lace dominated The Met Gala 2024 red carpet. With a great bunch of first-time attendees, family gatherings, and pregnancy announcements, this year's red carpet was one to remember.

But what happens next? With countless after-parties around New York City celebrating fashion's biggest night out, the looks continue way past Met's doors.

In true after-hours style, we witnessed plenty more skin, lace, and boudoir-esque corsetry. From Kendall Jenne's two after-party dresses sourced straight from Givenchy's Spring/ Summer 1997 collection and a custom lace number by Andreas Kronthaler at Vivienne Westwood to Janelle Monáe's Area mini dress that genuinely had us seeing stars.

Arriving fashionably late, after Vogue's official Livestream of the red carpet had ended, model Adwoa Aboah revealed a pregnancy bump at last night's Met Gala 2024. Congrats!

The Met Gala has a history of pregnancy reveals - last year, fellow model and entrepreneur Karlie Kloss used the (technically cream) red carpet to announce her happy news. As did tennis superstar Serena Williams, who showed off her growing baby bump alongside her husband, Alexis Ohanian.

Looking resplendent in crimson, Aboah opted for a bespoke H&M co-ord that consisted of a ruffled cropped top which sat atop a bejewelled scarlet bra and a taffeta bubble skirt which echoed Sienna Miller's Schiaparelli skirt, which she wore on last year's Vogue World red carpet. Miller was also in attendance with a gaggle of Chloé It Girls, including Marie Claire cover star Zoe Saldana, Barbie director Greta Gerwig, and first-time attendees actress Emma Mackey and Chloé creative director Chemena Kamali.

The British model and Top Boy actress has been dating the US-based skater and videographer Daniel Wheatley since 2021. Aboah has been active on social media, posting recent campaign photos for the likes of Kurt Geiger and posing with fashion friends Emily Ratajowski and Vogue's Julia Sarr-Jamois at the recent Victoria Beckham for Mango launch, so it came as a complete shock to fans when the Gurls Talk founder revealed her baby bump at last night's event.

Lea Michele also arrived with a plus 1 to last night's Met Gala. the 37-year-old actress arrived wearing a retro baby blue (a subtle gender reveal, perhaps?) Rodarte gown with sunny floral straps and a cascading tulle train.

The Glee actress unveiled her pregnancy on Instagram five weeks ago but cheekily joked to the Associated Press, "I don't think I was allowed a plus one."

Rihanna might have skipped the Met, but last night's gala wasn’t short on mothers, or soon-to-be-mothers, either.

Anna Wintour famously guards the guest list for the prestigious Met Gala, so securing an invite to The Oscars of the fashion world is no mean feat.

The Met Gala 2024 red carpet has just closed with the guests heading into the main event, and as ever we are inspired by the incredible outfits. From Sarah Jessica Parker's nude embellished Richard Quinn dress and Rebecca Ferguson's Thom Brown evening gown (complete with an exciting reveal) to our cover star, Shakira's debut appearance, this year's stars are certainly delivering.

Fashion's biggest night of the year, which always takes place on the first Monday in May, is in celebration of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual fashion exhibition. This year's theme: "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" and the event's dress code titled: "The Garden of Time" (inspired by J.G. Ballard's 1962 short story) were both up for interpretation and this is where the celebrities can have fun with their outfits. 

Whilst we've spotted a lot of corsetry, cleavage, and sheer fabric from the fashion side of things, there is one beauty trend that is standing out from the beautifully dressed crowd and that's blush. 

From diffused washes of pale pink that give an almost ethereal look to the skin to punchy pops of fuschia, blusher is the working overtime this year. 

Traditionally blush is applied to either the apple of the cheeks or out toward the hairline, brushing along the cheekbone, and we did see that at play here. The 2024 Met Gala has begun - whilst the main event doesn't kick off for another hour or so, the stars have started to arrive at fashion's biggest event of the year. (For live updates, keep an eye on our Met Gala coverage here).

The style set are walking the green carpet to celebrate the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual fashion exhibition and this year's is titled: "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" which showcases archival designs that are "far too fragile to ever be worn again”.

Lily James, who was part of the early arrivals, is wearing a beautiful light pink custom Erdem gown with black flower embroidery perfectly reflects the dress code: "The Garden of Time" a 1962 short story by J.G. Ballard. 

Whilst the gown is pure elegance, it is expertly teamed with an equally elevated beauty look. Subtle make-up, with a pinch of rouge on the cheeks making her look like the ultimate English rose. Lily has always impressed on this red carpet, her Charlotte Tilbury look in 2022 in particular was the definition of gilded glamour. 

However, it's her slicked back bun that has got us talking at the Marie Claire offices. As you'd expect from an event like this evening's the hair looks pure luxury. But it's an effortless approach, rather than anything avantgarde, which the Met Gala so often showcases. Not only is the hair giving off a high shine, but there is not one hair out of place, which means that the Erdem creation is allowed to take centre stage. 

Earlier in the evening, James was spotted getting her final hair and make-up checks from The Carlyle Hotel where most stars took a room to get ready. It was here that we were able to catch a glimpse of the product that gave her hair that glass shine effect and ensures that it will stay like that well into the afterparty. 

It will please you to know that the product costs under £6 and can be found in most high street beauty stores and some supermarkets.

The Livestream clock might still be ticking on Vogue (less than an hour to go at the time of writing), but the Grand Dame of the Met (and perhaps all of New York high society), Anna Wintour, has arrived with her family in tow.

Wintour was seen wearing—gasp for dramatic effect—florals for spring (groundbreaking). A mix of ethereal and iciness (a subtle nod to her famous moniker or, as I like to think, a tip of the hat to that other famous quote in The Devil Wears Prada) was on display as Wintour left her hotel in a floor-skimming white gown with subtle floral detailing. Her banged bob—a Wintour trademark that is back in trend—has gotten blonder over the years and adds a cool flourish to this pristine ensemble. Naturally, the look came courtesy of LVMH’s Loewe, who is sponsoring the gala alongside TikTok.

Wintour’s daughter Bee Carrozzini wears archive Alexander McQueen from the late designer’s SS16 ready-to-wear collection with tumbling Pre-Raphaelite waves. This Editor predicts Ophelia by John Everett Millais was tacked to many a moodboard in the months leading up to fashion’s most prestigious event.

Charles Shaffer and Elizabeth Cordry Shaffer (Wintour’s son and daughter-in-law) arrived in classic black-tie attire with a subtle nod to this year’s theme - Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.

Ballard. Co-chaired by none other than Zendaya, Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez, and Chris Hemsworth. This year's two honorary chairs are Jonathan Anderson, JW Anderson's founder and Loewe's creative director, as well as Shou Chew, Tik Tok's CEO.

The annual event - undoubtedly the most iconic in the fashion calendar, is most known for its red carpet, with celebrity guests in their hundreds getting creative with the official dress code - announced each year.

The 2024 theme is “The Garden of Time”, inspired by the 1962 short story by J.G. Ballard. And judging by the famed work, we can expect a lot of gothic and dark florals on the red carpet.

But most importantly, which A-list faces will be taking to the red carpet in the first place?

There is a lot of speculation around a potential surprise appearance from Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, and fans are hoping that Ryan Gosling might make his Costume Institute Benefit debut. But some of the biggest talk surrounds Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, with hopes that royalty may grace the Met Gala.

Yes, social media sleuths have been predicting a Met Gala appearance from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, but on closer inspection it could be unlikely, with only two members of the British royal family having ever attended in its history.

The first Mountbatten-Windsor to attend the Met Gala was Princess Diana, who famously arrived at the 1996 Costume Institute Benefit in a navy lace-trimmed silk slip dress from John Galliano's debut couture collection for Dior.

Over 20 years later, Princess Beatrice became the second member of the British royal family to attend the Met Gala, making a surprise appearance in 2018 in an Alberta Ferretti gown.

Will the third royal Met Gala appearance take place this year? Only time will tell.

Celebrities have been trawling the archives of iconic designers like Thierry Mugler and John Galliano with increasing vigour, but after last year’s Karl Lagerfeld-themed Gala, vintage couture’s position on the red carpet has been firmly cemented.

Marie Claire UK favourite Zendaya is co-chairing the event with Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, and Anna Wintour. To the adulation of literally everyone, Rihanna has confirmed her attendance after arriving fashionably late last year and skipping altogether the year before (lest we forget when she “Shut down the met in marble!”). Anne Hathaway, Beyoncé, Blake Lively, Dua Lipa, and the extended Kardashian-Jenner clan are all predicted to attend. Ahead of Monday’s extravaganza (and I do not use that word lightly), here’s a look at the most fabulous Met Gala outfits of all time

What time does the Met Gala 2024 start?

The 2024 Met Gala will be held on May 6, 2024, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The red carpet is officially set to begin at 6 pm EST / 11 pm GMT, but guests will likely start arriving from 5 pm EST / 10 pm GMT.

How do I watch the Met Gala 2024 in the UK?

The Met Gala 2024 will be streamed live on Vogue.com and across its social media channels, including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube. Vogue's Met Gala livestream will reportedly be hosted by Gwendoline Christie and Ashley Graham. E! will also be streaming the carpet starting at 11 pm GMT.

If there's one place where power couples assert said power, it's the Met Gala red carpet.

Sadly, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce — power couple of power couples — will reportedly not be sighted at the prestigious annual event this May, but don't worry, they have a good excuse.

TMZ reported earlier this month that the American football player and superstar singer were of course invited to the fashion-centred event, but had RSVP'd "no."

Now, the Daily Mail has explained the reason for Taylor and Travis' no-show, and it's very simply that it falls right in the middle of the popstar's Eras Tour schedule.

The Met Gala takes place in New York City on 6 May, with Taylor's first show post-break scheduled for 9 May in Paris, France. While it would be technically possible for her to attend the former event and still perform the latter, it's understandable that she wouldn't want to lose her concert prep time (and rest) to travelling and getting glammed up in a really involved way for the red-carpet event.

Taylor has attended a bunch of Met Galas in the past, in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2016, while Travis has yet to walk the famous steps.

The lovebirds began dating sometime last summer, and while they've been spotted together a bunch of times in public — on date nights and at Travis' football games, e.g. — they have yet to walk a red carpet together.

One thing's for sure: when they do, it will be epic.

On another note, Taylor's career is at an all-time high right now, with her new album The Tortured Poets Department breaking streaming records left and right.

Over on Instagram, the popstar thanked fans for making all this happen.

"My mind is blown. I’m completely floored by the love you’ve shown this album," Taylor wrote. "2.6 million ARE YOU ACTUALLY SERIOUS?? Thank you for listening, streaming, and welcoming Tortured Poets into your life. Feeling completely overwhelmed. I was already so fired up to get back to the tour but you doing THIS?? Taylor Swift is dominating the headlines, and from her sell-out Eras tour to her upcoming studio album, 'The Tortured Poets Department', set for release this month, that shows no signs of slowing down. 

It is Taylor's relationship with Travis Kelce that has really been front and centre in 2024. And after an action-packed few months, from the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl win to Swift's multiple Eras concerts, the couple has reportedly spent the last few weeks in private.

Taylor and Travis have been taking "a break from the buzz of their careers" and spending time just as the two of them, sources explained via Us Weekly, with reports that they are "nesting" at Swift's Los Angeles home.

"They can finally rest," the source reported. "And [they] intend on spending quality time together and with friends and family. In fact, going forwards, the couple is reportedly coordinating their schedules to ensure that "they can see each other as much as possible" and don't "spend too much time apart".

It is not known when we will next see a public appearance from the A-list couple, but fans are speculating that it could be the 2024 Met Gala in New York next month.

Last night, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York was buzzing with some of the most recognisable faces in the world as celebrities and fashion icons gathered for the Met Gala. 

This year's glamorous event, which is spearheaded by Anna Wintour, paid tribute to the late Chanel artistic director, Karl Lagerfeld - who passed away in 2019 - with the theme set as Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty. 

A-listers interpreted the theme in a number of ways - Doja Cat and Jared Leto chose to honour his famous cat, Choupette, while Anne Hathaway made a nostalgic nod to Liz Hurley's iconic Versace pin dress in a tweed Versace reimagining of the legendary look. 

Nicole Kidman recycled her own iconic Chanel dress from 2004, wearing the pink feathered gown from the noughties advert directed by Moulin Rouge's Baz Luhrmann. 

While bridal looks appeared to be a recurring theme at the Met Gala, there was also another - pregnancy reveals. 

We all love an unexpected announcement that a celebrity is in fact expecting - think Beyoncé in 2011 at the MTV Video Music Awards, and Rihanna earlier this year during her Super Bowl performance - and last night, there were not one but two. 

Tennis icon Serena Williams showed off her growing baby bump on the Met Gala red carpet alongside her husband, Alexis Ohanian. The couple welcomed their daughter, Alexis Olympia Jr, in 2017, and are set to welcome their second child later this year. 

She also confirmed the news on Instagram, sharing a photograph of herself in her Gucci gown, writing: "Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala."

Model Karlie Kloss also used the fashion event to share the news that she is expecting her second child with husband, Joshua Kushner. 

The couple welcomed their son, Levi, in 2021, and talking to Emma Chamberlain on the red carpet she revealed that she wasn't sure how to style her growing bump. 

Sharing that the last time she was pregnancy was during the coronavirus pandemic, she said: "I don’t know how to style a belly!"

Blake Lively is usually one of the most popular celebrities gracing the Met Gala red carpet. 

The annual event is one of the biggest nights in fashion and takes place on the first Monday of May, with Vogue's Anna Wintour at the helm. Held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, this year's theme was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, with the most recognisable faces in the industry paying homage to the late Chanel artistic director. 

From Doja Cat arriving as his infamous pet Choupette, to Anne Hathaway's tweed nod to Liz Hurley's iconic Versace pin dress, the Met Gala 2023 was undoubtedly a night to remember. 

However, Blake - who went viral last year thanks to her colour-changing dress - didn't attend this year. 

The actor and former Met Gala go-chair revealed just days before that she wouldn't be gracing the iconic steps. 

Talking to People on last week, she said: "You will not [see me on the red carpet.] But I will be watching."

When a reporter noted her iconic 2022 dress, she said: "Thank you, that’s very sweet. I’ll be wearing that on my couch on Monday."

Blake and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, welcomed their fourth child earlier this year. The couple, who married in 2012, are parents to daughters James, 8, Inez, 6, and Betty, 3, with their fourth child - whose name has not yet been publicly shared - born in February. 

As the night unfolded, Blake shared a photograph to Instagram stories showing herself pumping in a bathroom, writing: "First Monday in May."

Billie Eilish honoured Karl Largefeld's legacy at the Met Gala 2023 dressed in a sheer lace corset dress by Irish designer Simone Rocha.

Billie is no stranger to the Met Gala, having previously wowed on the red carpet in a Gucci corset dress in 2022, and a stunning nude Oscar de la Renta gown in 2021. 

Her ensemble on the night comprised a lace-bustier minidress, which was adorned with silver embellishments, and sheer overlay with a statement high neck, with matching embellished gloves.

The event took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, with the world's fashion elite coming together to honour Karl Lagerfeld for the theme of the night, called simply "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty."

Bridal gowns made up the overriding theme of the Met Gala 2023, with Dua Lipa, Nicole Kidman and Gisele Bündchen all seen on the red carpet wearing vintage wedding looks.

Billie, however, bucked the trend with her gothic gown, pairing the look with a hand-beaded jet crystal cluster, tulle gloves and stockings.

To complete the look, Billie's hair was dyed jet black and then styled in a centre parting with a long, thick braid worn over one shoulder.

Designer Simone Rocha said of the look, "I was inspired by Billie herself, her talent, her world, and her powerful femininity."

She continued, "I wanted to celebrate her femininity through fragility and strength. Working with fragile tulle and edging it in lace, interpreting embellishment as armour, and creating a look which reflected an emotion, a very layered piece revealing what lies beneath…"

The look is a far departure from Eilish's 2021 Meta Gala look, which saw the signer channel Marilyn Monroe wearing an opulent champagne ball gown with a dramatically long train, designed by Oscar de la Renta.

The singer has spoken previously about her appearance at the Met Gala on The Howard Stern Radio Show, telling listeners, "The main thing that night made me think or feel was how famous people are just literally nobodies. Just randos."

She explained, "It's so weird. I mean, I was like, Wow, all these people are just somebody that's in class with you, and you think this person's kind of annoying, or you really like this person, you get along with this person, and everybody's just, like, embarrassed and insecure about what they're doing and saying."

Anne Hathaway's Met Gala 2023 red carpet look proved that the actress is truly in her fashion girl era this year, and we are here for it. Yes, we still find it hard to separate Hathaway from her Devil Wears Prada character Andy, but Andy would be beyond proud of tonight's Met Gala outfit. 

This year's Met Gala theme is a homage to the late Karl Lagerfeld, and IMHO Anne Hathaway nailed it. Gracing the red carpet in a strapless tweed Versace gown, we can't decide if we love the thigh-high split or the cut-outs more. 

The iconic image of Liz Hurley in the black Versace pin dress has been etched into Fashion's collective memory and seeing this updated version for 2023 fills us with joy. 

Lagerfeld was well known for his love of tweed, and Hathaway's safety pin tweed dress would make him proud. Finishing the look with even more tweed touches, we're talking tweed gloves and not ignoring the diamond necklace. 

Are you seeing the Swarovski crystal-embellishment? Her gown is a homage to both Versace and Chanel, (Lagerfeld worked with Chanel for nearly 20 years).

Donatella Versace created Hathaway's look and told Vogue she wanted the look to be a nod to both Chanel and Versace. "The dress is a tribute to our shared ’90s experience—tweed, pearls and camellias mixed with safety pins, slashes, and a corset. Anne looks powerful, feminine, stunning and of course iconic. Exactly like Karl made women feel in his dresses," she tells Vogue. 

If this 'fit wasn't the perfect ode to the 90's then wait until you hear about the hair. We had to know what was giving her so much volume, but that ended up being the least exciting part. 

Shouting out her hair stylist, who secured her a vintage hairpiece to perfect the look. Taking a flower hairpiece from a nineties Versace show, it looks a lot like Chanel's iconic flower—Hathaway wins.

Dua Lipa just arrived at the Met Gala 2023 red carpet and we audibly gasped at her arrival. 

The Met Gala marks the biggest night in fashion and every year the specially selected Met Gala attendees show up in their very finest.

This year the theme is in honour of the late Karl Lagerfeld and Dua Lipa has won the show already in my eyes (I'm still waiting for Rihanna). Lipa, Penelope Cruz and La La Anthony all arrived on the white Met Gala carpet in the category: the bride.

Co-host Dua Lipa just arrived in full Princess mode and she has nailed the theme this year perfectly, wearing a stunning full-length white Chanel gown. 

The late Lagerfeld was known and adored as Chanel's creative director and Lipa's gown is one of his creations from 1992. The white and black tweed gown is from Lagerfeld's Fall/Winter '92 collection but there's one addition to Lipa's 'fit that no one could miss. 

All eyes were on Lipa as she arrived in the vintage Chanel gown but no one could miss the diamond necklace, which as you one could guess from just looking at it, is one of a kind. 

It's a pretty special diamond, a new Tiffany & Co Legendary diamond to be precise, fit for a Princess. It's over 100 carats—valued at around £8 million—and Lipa is the first one to wear the updated version of the famous Tiffany necklace.

The big rock is reportedly worth $10 million (when last valued in 2019) and is a nod to the iconic Tiffany diamond.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's possible attendance at King Charles' coronation later this year has been a huge talking point for royal fans. 

Since the release of the couple's Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan last year, and the Duke of Sussex's memoir Spare hitting the shelves in January, the public has been given more insight into their experience within the monarchy and their fractured relationships with members of the family. 

While Harry and Meghan have confirmed that they received an invitation for the King's coronation, they are yet to publicly accept - although one insider has claimed that the Prince may return to the UK alone for the occasion. 

But as the summer draws closer, many are now wondering if the couple will attend another huge event taking place across the pond - the Met Gala. 

The annual fundraising gala is the most fashionable gathering of the biggest celebrities on the planet, and getting invited to the event - which is spearheaded by Vogue's Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour - is deemed a huge honour. 

With the 2023 Met Gala taking place on 1st May, just five days before Charles' coronation, will Harry and Meghan be ascending those iconic carpeted steps?

One PR expert believes that while the Sussexes are now settled in California, their attendance isn't guaranteed due to the ongoing friction with the royal family. 

Jordan James, CEO of Unlockd PR, told the Express: "It certainly wouldn't come as a major surprise if they were snubbed given their current status within the Royal Family and the ensuing drama."

He added that although it could 'boost their public perception in America', if they were to receive an invitation it's quite likely that they would decline. 

He continued: "They aren't likely to attend as they will undoubtedly face scrutiny, no matter how hard they may try to minimise fallout - especially with how close this event is to the Royal Coronation.

"While the couple isn’t always known for laying low, I think we are beginning to see a shift in how they want to be presented - whether this is truly by choice though we may never know."

We'll just have to wait and see!

Every year Blake Lively has delivered on the Met Gala theme, and she never fails to impress with her eccentric outfits for the annual fashion extravaganza.

This year the Gossip Girl  actor nailed the Gilded Glamour theme for the evening, which was hosted by Anna Wintour and took place at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Blake's Versace gown certainly stole the show - aside from the shock proposal on the red carpet - and for more reasons than one.

The 34-year-old actor's dress changed colour, yes, you read that right. Her ensemble appeared to be rose and copper tones when she first made her way up the iconic stairs of the Met Ball with Ryan Reynolds. But, after undoing the bow at the back, the design transformed into a completely different dress, with blue and copper tones, which was said to replicate the Statue of Liberty's oxidation over the years.

Blake has revealed the design was also a tribute to other New York landmarks; the celestial map emblazoned on her train was a nod to the zodiac constellations printed on the ceiling of Grand Central Station, while the embellished detailing symbolised the iconic Empire State building.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight about the look, Blake said: "I looked at New York City architecture for this event, and I loved the copper patinas. I asked Versace if we could do it and they said, 'Oh god, OK, let's try!' And we did."

She told a separate E! News reporter: "This is architecture from the Empire State Building. It [has] lots of little references to New York City", referencing the embellished detailing on the designer gown.

However, there was something else.

Eagle-eyed fans have noticed Blake appears to co-ordinate her Met Gala dress to the carpet. Sounds bizarre, but there is method in the magic - just look closely.

This year the carpet paving the way for the A-list guest list was red, white and blue - similar to Blake's gown.

But that was not the first time The Shallows star's outfit blended in with the floor.

Cast your mind back to 2018 when Blake slipped into the burgundy red and gold design, which reportedly took over 600 hours to make, that she accessorised with a gold tiara.

Look closely and you will notice the carpet is also cream with Merlot red pattern, while the steps have a neutral geometric print, which looks very similar to the detail on her gown, as well as the colours on Blake's dress.

In 2017 Blake relied on Versace once again and stunned in a figure hugging gold embellished dress with a blue feathered hem and train detail.

Yes, you guessed it, that year the carpet was also cream and blue.

Go back even further to 2016, when the theme for the annual event was Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology, Blake wowed in a soft pink Burberry dress, with a matching sheer cape attached to the ethereal creation, which had contrasting red floral detailing on the trim.

The same year the carpet was a red, pink and cream printed design.

Is this planned? We don't know. But we are here for it, and applaud Blake, as well as the designers, for the attention to detail - even if it isn't intentional.

Kylie Jenner's Met Gala 2022 outfit has sparked quite the controversy, and a mix of opinions at that.

While some loved the modern bridal Off-White look, and found her tribute to the late designer Virgil Abloh, others thought her after-party look was more appropriate for the annual fashion bash, which is organised by Anna Wintour and takes place the first Monday in May.

For the main event the 24-year-old beauty mogul wore Virgil Ablog's Off White creation from his last collection, which featured a figure hugging mesh top with a ruched corset over the top, and large ruffled skirt, which reportedly required eight people to get into.

She paired the look with a baseball cap, which was worn backwards, and a veil, which has been slammed as too casual for the exclusive bash.

The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star spoke out about the look on her Instagram account, as she shared a string of images of her preparing to hit the red carpet, which included her with her glam squad, a close up of the detailing on her accessories, as well as a sweet message from Virgil arranging their collaboration.

The post read: "Virgil and I were supposed to go to the Met together before it got postponed in 2020. to celebrate V tonight and his incredible legacy truly means the world to me. i’m humbled to wear this dress and honour my talented beautiful friend. we felt you tonight Virgil and love you forever & thank u to the entire @off____white team !!"

However, it was Kylie's after party look, which has piqued many people's interest, with many wishing she wore the second number for the main do.

Kylie later slipped into another Off White creation, which was more figure hugging as it boasted a long sleeve bardot sheer top, layered underneath a corset and satin maxi dress.

Sharing a selection of photos of her second outfit on her Instagram account, she wrote: "The afterparty", while a follow-up post read: "Married to the Met."

Fans swiftly commented showing their disappointment Kylie didn't wear the second look first.

One commented: "Should've worn this to the Met Gala!"

Another added: "THIS is the met look everyone was waiting for", while a third commented: "Queen you needed to wear this instead of the cap."

A separate follower commented: "So this dress was lost or something for the red carpet?"

"This should have been your gilded met gala DRESS ! I’m obsessed", advised another.

One question on everyone's lips when the Met Gala comes around is what actually happens once the celebrities have left the red carpet, climbed the iconic stairs at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, and entered the event?

The 25-year-old model has given us a sneak peek of the goings on at the Met Gala - and we couldn't be happier.

The style icon shared a collage of photos from the star studded event, which host Anna Wintour plans meticulously months ahead of the May bash. 

Bella shared a string of images from the evening, which included selfies with her and fellow guests, such as Paloma Elsesser, as well as candid shots of models, singers and actors at the annual fashion extravaganza, including model Imaan Hammam and Nicki Minaj.

A separate image captures Iris Law posing with fellow models Paloma, Imaan and Precious Lee, while another shot from the evening sees Iris pose beside a pair of pink Louboutin stilettos perched on top of a bush at the bash. After all, that is the only way to end an eventful night, right?

Bella also shared a video of her with her celebrity pals laughing away. The snippet sees Billie Eilish and Bella giggling away with sister Gigi Hadid, as well as singers Lizzo and Ciara.

A separate photo caught Bella and Billie sticking their tongues out, while Lizzo and Gigi are beaming with joy beside them, before two more group shots were taken; one serious, and one candid shot.

A group image saw Bella, Lizzo, Gigi and Ciara joined by Bridgerton's Phoebe Dynevor, and Squid Games' HoYeon Jung, who all posed seriously for the first image, which was followed by a photo of them all giggling in what appears to be the Met toilets - or another very discrete place at the venue.

Bella simply captioned the post with a black heart emoji, and within just five hours, the post has racked up over one million likes on the photo-sharing site - that must be a record?

The fashion muse not only showed us a snippet of what goes on behind closed doors at the Met Gala, but also the goings on ahead of the occasion with a string of images of her preparing to brave the red carpet.

A separate slew of images see Bella surrounded by her team, including make up artist and stylist, on her Instagram account.

Among the collection of images, Bella also shared a close up of the custom made Burberry corset she wore for the evening, and took the time to thank her team, but also designer Riccardo Tisci for creating the masterpiece.

She wrote: "Thank God for every person in these photos. I am grateful and adore every one of you. Riccardo - I love You amore."

The Met Gala 2022 was back bigger and better than ever before, and it's not solely down to the glitz and glamour of the impressive red carpet fashion.

It's not even the fact that some celebrities made their first Met Gala appearance - we're looking at you Khloe Kardashian.

It's better.

The Commissioner of New York City's Department of Cultural Affairs, Laurie Cumbo, 47, and partner Bobby Digi Olisa - who was the former New York State Assembly Candidate - got engaged. On the red carpet.

All eyes were on the couple when Bobby got down on one knee, while Laurie was heading up the steps at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art on 2 May.

As soon as Laurie gave her answer the future husband and wife embraced each other in the most precious moment of the evening - in our opinion.

The special moment stopped many in their tracks, including Laurie who had no idea her fiancé would pop the question there or then.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight Laurie said: "I didn’t know it was going to happen tonight. We’ve been talking about it. We’ve been through so much and this is such an honour and this is such a blessing."

The moment felt all the more special for Laurie who feels her life has come full circle.

She continued: "I was an intern here when I was 15 and came to the Met Gala. Now I’m coming back with my now-husband as the commissioner for the Department of Cultural Affairs."

Bobby and Laurie are not the only couple to get engaged at The Met Gala, as rapper 2 Chainz popped the question to Kesha Ward in 2018, while 14 years prior, back in 2004, Donald Trump and wife Melania got engaged.

We wonder who will be taking the next step in their relationship at the Met Gala next year.

We also can't help but wonder if the proposal plans were in host Anna Wintour's meticulous plan, as she maps out every single detail of the Met Gala months in advance of the annual celebration, which falls on the first Monday in May every year.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic interruption, the 2022 Met Gala is bigger and better than ever before - just look at the Met Gala red carpet - and it is all thanks to Anna Wintour.

It has been the centre of conversation for months, and will continue to be so for even longer, but not just by viewers, guests, the fashion and beauty business, but the organiser too.

It has been reported Anna, 72, has a "militant" schedule when it comes to planning the Met Gala, which marks the opening of New York's Costume Institue's Annual Fashion Exhibition.

Anna plans the annual fashion bash, which she has been hosting for 30 years, months in advance, and holds regular meetings to ensure everything goes to plan on the day.

Author Amy Odell, who is set to release Anna: The Biography, released a snippet of her book to Time magazine, in which she details exactly what goes on in the run-up to the hotly anticipated event after speaking with staff at the Met, and others who have worked with Anna.

Stephanie Winston Wolkoff previously planned the Met Gala before her successor took over, which is detailed in Amy's book, and described Anna's approach as "militant".

While a separate staff member revealed Anna starts planning the next year in the autumn, and meetings are held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art every four to six weeks to ensure the event is perfect.

It has also been alleged Anna doesn't learn the Met staff's names. Amy wrote: "Her directives have often been so absurd the Met team just laughs them off."

There have also been claims Anna has changed the museum's displays, and in particular requested for the historical Roman Egyptian Temple of Dendur, which was built in 15 B.C. to be covered over as it didn't meet her aesthetic.

It's safe to say this year's exhibition was overhauled, even though she couldn't attend, Rihanna received a Met Gala honour in the form of a statue of herself showcasing her baby bump.

Anna's other stipulation is that she knows every single detail, which you would expect from the organiser.

Prior to the event, Anna needs the precise time each guest will be arriving and will meet with every guest for 20 seconds on the top of the staircase after photos are taken on the red carpet at the New York landmark before they are welcomed inside.

This year's theme followed the theme In America: An Anthology of Fashion, a continuation of last year’s In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, and everyone put their own spin on it; Kim Kardashian wore Marilyn Monroe's iconic dress and Lily James went full glam

Guests included Hailey Bieber, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Normal People stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal, as well as Kim Kardashian, and almost her entire family as Khloe Kardashian - who has previously been snubbed from the event - was invited.
