When Taylor Swift and Joe Alywn split in early 2023, fans were shocked that the former couple - who had been together for six years - decided to go their separate ways ahead of Taylor kicking off The Eras Tour. In the months that followed, Taylor and Joe didn't speak about the split publicly, but fans speculated that her song You're Losing Me was about their relationship and held signs at her gigs asking if she was okay.

Now, in an interview with The Guardian, Joe was asked about the breakup with Taylor almost two years after their split. While he is infamously guarded about his private life, he had a very telling response when the journalist questioned whether he 'just wanted to move on' from the conversations about his famous ex.

In response, Joe said of 'moving on': "That’s something for other people to do. We’re talking about something that’s a while ago now in my life. So that’s for other people. That’s what I feel."

It appears that Joe could be referring to the continued rumours about their relationship. Ahead of the release of Taylor's 2024 album, The Tortured Poets Department, fans speculated that it would document her feelings about the end of their relationship. At the time, a source said: "If it is a diss album, that is shady. He helped her with song writing on her past album so it will really come as a shock to him if she talks about their breakup, as it is something he has not spoken of at all."

However, upon TTPD's release, Swifties deduced that the majority of Taylor's tracks actually alluded to her brief relationship with The 1975 frontman Matty Healy instead. She dated Matty shortly after her split from Joe, but the pair reportedly split after just a month.

It's not quite "so long, London" for Taylor Swift just yet.

Over a year on from her break-up with "London boy" Joe Alwyn, the singer was spotted out and about in the British capital for the first time since she and Joe ended things, on Friday.

Taylor was in London to support her longtime friend Cara Delevingne, as she portrayed club performer Sally Bowles in Cabaret at KitKatClub in the West End.

The rumour was confirmed by KitKatClub head of marketing Arthur Jones on X, who called the performance Taylor attended "a special night."

Taylor headed to London soon after her Thursday Eras Tour concert in Madrid, Spain. (At time of writing, she's completed her two dates in Lyon, France, and is preparing to finally arrive in the UK to perform for British Swifties, starting in Edinburgh on 7 June.)

She and Cara have been besties for ages. They first appeared in public together at the 2013 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, when the supermodel was walking the runway, and the singer was performing.

They then began hanging out often, around New York City or at industry events.

Cara was part of Taylor's original "girl squad" circa 2015, when she was constantly spotted with a string of glamorous, famous women, including Gigi Hadid, Hailee Steinfeld, Karlie Kloss, Martha Hunt, Selena Gomez, Lorde, Ellie Goulding, etc., etc.

These days, Taylor's friend group may look a little different, but Cara is still one of her closest pals, hence why she made the trip to see her perform.

Cara spoke to Harper's Bazaar in April about her role in Cabaret, and how she's portraying Sally. "I feel I can put all my pain and fear into the performance," she explained. "There are so many layers to her. She is extremely powerful, but my God, is she broken and vulnerable. She’s a child — a little girl, and that is the saddest part of it all. I definitely recognise myself in that."

As for Taylor, she is believed to have spent loads of time in London during her six-year relationship with Joe, which ended in April 2023. Now, the superstar has moved on with American football pro Travis Kelce, a relationship that Cara apparently very much approves of.

"I'm so, so happy for her," the supermodel told E! News about Swelce in November. "There's definitely something very different about them."

And now, Andrew Scott has finally commented on the rumours that the album was named after *that* Whatsapp group chat. During an interview with Variety, the actor addressed the inspiration behind the chat between himself, Mescal and Alwyn - and honestly, it might just put the whole thing to bed once and for all.

When asked exactly what The Tortured Man Club was, Scott said: "Let me tell you what that is! So [Alywn and Mescal] were about to play these tortured characters, and I had played a tortured character in Fleabag. It wasn’t about our own characteristics!"

Scott famously played the Hot Priest in Fleabag, while Mescal was about to start filming Aftersun and Alwyn had appeared in Sally Rooney's Conversations With Friends. He also confirmed that the chat was a short lived venture and was no longer in use, adding: "I think there were three texts, like, 'Hey, guys.' You know those groups that you set up, and they just collapse."

Further proving there's no bad blood between any of the so-called tortured men and Taylor, Scott continued: "I texted her yesterday to say how amazing it is. I think she is just a force of nature, just an extraordinary human, and this album is really, really amazing."

Well, that's that!

Taylor Swift dropped her highly-anticipated new studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, on Friday, and unsurprisingly it's all anyone has been able to talk about. 

The surprise double album features a whopping 31 tracks, with the 34-year-old releasing 15 additional songs two hours after the original album dropped.

"The Tortured Poets Department," Swift announced on social media. "An anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time - one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure." 

Her message continued: "This period of the author's life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted. This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it. And then all that's left behind is the tortured poetry."

The long-awaited album has been teased for months, with Swifties already unpicking the many high profile names referenced, including that of ex boyfriend Joe Alwyn.

Swift dated the British actor from 2017 to 2023, with new track 'So Long, London' - dubbed the saddest on the album - thought to be about their break up.

It was Joe Alwyn's link to other Taylor Swift albums that made headlines today however, as theories resurfaced about Alwyn's involvement on Folklore, Evermore and Midnights. 

Yes really, Alwyn was a co-writer on two songs from Taylor Swift's eighth studio album, with his pseudonym "William Bowery" credited for co-writing 'Betty' and 'Exile'. Not to mention, he also has been credited for co-writing 'Champagne Problems', 'Coney Island', 'Evermore' and 'Sweet Nothing' on her later albums, Evermore and Midnights.

Despite the pseudonym, Swifties theorised that Bowery was in fact Alwyn, with "William" being the name of his grandfather, and Bowery coming from the name of the hotel where Swift and Alwyn would often stay in London - The Bowery Hotel.

This was then confirmed by Taylor Swift herself, who revealed 'William Bowery' to be her then boyfriend in her Disney+ special, Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions.

Earlier this week, Taylor spoke about her upcoming album, calling it a 'lifeline', and fuelled speculation that it is about her relationship with Joe as she captioned an Instagram post of the cover art: "All's fair in love and poetry."

Joe has remained quiet about their break-up, and source close to him said upon the news of Taylor's new album: "He has removed himself from her narrative and is very glad he did." However, he has now broken his social media silence since Taylor's comments about being 'lonely' while producing Folklore. At the same Melbourne gig, she told her fans that she was working on the record during the pandemic - when she was reportedly isolating with Joe in London - explaining: "[I was] imagining that, instead of being a lonely millennial woman covered in cat hair drinking my weight in white wine, I was a ghostly Victorian lady wandering through the woods with a candle in a candlestick holder."

Taking to Instagram for the first time since early September, Joe shared a series of images including snaps of a casino, Brian Cox, pints in the pub and natural landscapes. 

Taylor's fans were quick to comment on the timing of the post, with one writing on X, formerly Twitter: "I've seen more Joe Alwyn since the TTPD [The Tortured Poets Department] announcement than in his six years being with Taylor and that says a lot I think."

Coincidence?

Fans instantly interpreted the title as a dig at Joe, who previously spoke about being in a WhatsApp chat with Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott called 'The Tortured Man Club'. A source close to the actor has since told the Daily Mail that he believes the new record is, in fact, a reference to said group chat. Yikes. 

They told the publication: "Joe has not said one word about Taylor or their breakup and has been completely respectful of her. It’s undeniable that the name of her upcoming album is in reference to Joe’s WhatsApp group chat."

According to the insider, Taylor was 'bothered' when Joe spoke about it publicly as she 'didn't want people to think that it had anything to do with her'. The source claims that Joe is hoping the music will be a reflective look at their relationship, rather than a 'diss' album, adding: "If it is a diss album, that is shady. He helped her with song writing on her past album so it will really come as a shock to him if she talks about their breakup, as it is something he has not spoken of at all."

However, they added that regardless of the album's content, Joe is refusing to respond as he 'has removed himself from her narrative and is very glad he did'.

It's a popular opinion among Taylor Swift fans that Sweet Nothing, a track from her 10th studio album Midnights, is laced with subtle references to the singer's ex, Joe Alwyn. But eagle-eyed fans have noticed that she recently liked a post on X - formerly Twitter - that discusses another theory about this song.

Bear with us on this one - it gets a bit complicated. Beatles singer Paul McCartney had a sweet tradition with his late wife Linda McCartney that he described in a poem, Blessed, which he dedicated to her. Part of the poem read: "I would come back from a run with a poem to share and having listened Linda would say, 'What a mind'."

In her song Sweet Nothing, the Eras Tour star sings: "On the way home. I wrote a poem. You say, ‘What a mind'. This happens all the time."

The similarities are clear. But Taylor recently liking a post from a Paul McCartney archives account has further added fuel to the fire. The post, referencing Paul's poem to Linda, read: "I would come back from a run with a poem to share and having listened Linda would say 'what a mind' though the lines may not have been supreme, she wasn't merely being kind. She meant what she said. It's going to make a man feel good, that kind of a thing."

Taylor's fans were quick to notice that she's like the post, with one writing: "I love Sweet Nothing. It’s about how the simple and pure things mean the most. And I love being able to add this new context."

While another said: "Sweet Nothing about Paul & Linda theory CONFIRMED." And another commented: "Not her liking this old post now?? As if to say… it was never about Joe."

While fans may be re-thinking the meaning behind Sweet Nothing, there's no doubt it still has strong links to Taylor's past relationship. The Midnights hit was co-written with Taylor's boyfriend Joe Alwyn using the pseudonym William Bowery, so there's no doubt that it brings back memories of the relationship for the singer. But the jury's still out on whether the lyrics themselves are giving an insight into the couple's relationship. 

The rumour mill around Taylor and her ex has been rife this week, with gossip blog DeuxMoi claiming that Swift had married Alwyn in 'either 2020 or 2021' - but it was never made legal. Taylor's publicist Tree Paine has strongly denied the claims, taking to X to set the record straight. 

"Enough is enough with these fabricated lies about Taylor from Deuxmoi," she wrote.

"This is an insane thing to post. It's time for you to be held accountable for the pain and trauma you cause with posts like these."

An insider later claimed that Joe was 'embarrassed' about getting 'the Harry Styles treatment', as Taylor has often written songs about her high profile exes - notably the former One Direction member, Jake Gyllenhaal and Joe Jonas (who also recently revealed he hopes that Swifties have forgiven him for that 25 second phone call). 

Despite rumours that she was seeing The 1975 frontman Matty Healy after her split from Joe, the pair are said to have cooled things off, with her friends allegedly 'not shocked' by the news.

But when Taylor decided to sing Mr. Perfectly Fine as a surprise track during her gig in Pittsburgh, fans speculated that it was in response to photos of Joe with someone else which had appeared online hours before.

The lyrics read: "Hello Mr. Perfectly fine/ How's your heart after breaking mine? / Mr. Always at the right place at the right time, baby.

"Hello Mr. Casually cruel, Mr. Everything revolves around you / I've been Miss Misery since your goodbye / And you're Mr. Perfectly fine."

The same night, she also added The Last Time to her set list, with lyrics which include: "This is the last time I'm asking you this/ Put my name at the top of your list/ This is the last time I'm asking you why/ You break my heart in the blink of an eye."

While the additions surprised concert goers, some claim that she is referring to the photos of Joe - which were shared on Twitter - as he attended the Brokeback Mountain play in London. 

One fan claimed: "It's an insult to Taylor's iconic pettiness for you to say she didn't play Mr. Perfectly Fine the first show after her ex was seen with a new girl for the the first show after her ex was seen with a new girl for the first time on purpose like this is her forte she is thriving in song choices."

Another added: "Taylor singing Mr. Perfectly Fine days after those paparazzi pictures of Joe came out... Yeah."

However, not everyone was convinced that it meant something with one person writing: "Y'all are ridiculous and she also dated someone after the break up, they're done. Move on."

A source told the publication: "It may have been delusional, but Joe was under the impression she’d spare him the Harry Styles treatment.

"Joe finds it very embarrassing and disappointing - especially when she’s flaunting this tacky new romance. The hypocrisy and sheer rudeness of it all is off the charts.

"He’s not the type to kiss and tell, but he’s not a pushover either. He’s respectfully asking her to let him move on - and shut up!"

Although fans have speculated that the song is about Taylor and Joe, neither party has confirmed or denied the claims.

Ever the professional, Taylor has not let her personal dealings impact her performances. 

But that doesn't stop her fans - also known as Swifties - from worrying about her. 

During her concert in Tampa on 15 April a fan decided it was high time to check in on Taylor. 

The anonymous fan held a sign saying "You ok?", just days after the news of the reported break-up had been released. 

Taylor was mid performance, as she was singing her 2017 track Delicate, and subtly responded to the question by facing the crowd and giving a thumbs up.

While Taylor didn't give a direct answer, she has previously praised her fans, and the shows, for improving her wellbeing.

She said during the tour, which has since been shared on fan accounts: “I’m really loving this tour. It’s become my entire personality and I’ve always loved putting on shows, always loved that connection…knowing you have felt the same way… I need you guys very much for my well-being.”

Taylor still has over 40 shows to complete before the USA leg of The Eras tour comes to an end.

It was reported the couple split because they have "differences in their personalities."

They ultimately decided that they 'weren't the right fit for one another' and ended the relationship a few weeks ago.

The same source added that they've simple 'grown apart', continuing: "They are friendly. She doesn’t have anything bad to say about Joe. They just grew apart. Taylor is staying very focused on her tour right now."
