Few haircuts have achieved first-name status.‘The Rachel’ arrived in the early seasons of Friends, when Rachel Green’s shoulder-skimming explosion of layers became almost as famous as the character herself—and launched a thousand salon appointments in the process. Even today, the millennial style continues to inspire fresh interpretations—the latest being Gigi Hadid’s glossy, swishy reinterpretation. Her longer layers, sweeping face-framing sections, and softly curved ends retain the bounce that made the original so appealing, minus the ’90s cosplay. As her hairstylist, Dimitris Giannetos put it on his Instagram post, “I wanted to create the updated version of the C-cut, giving Gigi some Love Layers (aka heart shape layers)!” So how can we recreate this new take on a classic? I asked leading hairdressers Samantha Cusick and Jay Birmingham to explain how to wear the style now.

The 'Modern Rachel'

While the original relied on short, visible layers and a bouncy, rounded blow-dry, the new interpretation is altogether subtler. “The modern Rachel is all about softer glamour,” explains celebrity hairdresser Jay Birmingham. “The original was built around short, choppy layers and lots of volume, whereas today’s version is sleeker, longer and much more wearable. The layers are more blended, the movement is softer, and the finish is glossy rather than fluffy.”

That distinction is what makes the revival feel fresh. Rather than reproducing Jennifer Aniston’s haircut section by section, the aim is to capture its buoyant, face-framing effect. “It’s less about recreating a ’90s hairstyle and more about capturing that effortless bounce and healthy-looking shine,” says Birmingham.

Cusick believes the resurgence also reflects our renewed appetite for ’90s beauty, along with a broader shift towards haircuts that create movement. “We’re obsessed with volume, with movement, with that lived-in layered quality that looks effortless but is actually really considered,” she says. “The original Rachel had all of those things; it was just styled in a more structured, high-maintenance way for the time.”

What to Ask for at the Salon

The words ‘The Rachel’ may conjure a very specific image, so arriving armed with a reference to the longer, contemporary version is sensible. The most important point to communicate is that you want movement while preserving weight and fullness through the ends. “I’d ask for long, seamless layers that create movement without taking away too much weight,” advises Birmingham. “Soft face-framing pieces around the cheekbones or jawline will open up the face while keeping the overall look elegant and modern.” The layering should blend into the haircut rather than create obvious steps. “The beauty of this cut is that it should move naturally, so the layering needs to feel invisible rather than obvious,” he adds.

“The OG version was very much built for thicker, straighter hair, where you could get that signature volume and flick”, explains Cusick. “The 2026 version works with so many more hair types because the layering technique has evolved significantly.” That’s why the modern Rachel can be adapted to a much broader range of hair types than its predecessor. Layers remove bulk and encourage movement in thick hair, while naturally wavy textures lend themselves particularly well to the softer, undone finish.

Fine hair requires a more restrained approach. Too many layers can leave the ends looking sparse, so maintaining density is more important than chasing dramatic volume. This also makes the cut a compelling option for midlife hair that has become finer, drier or less dense.

“This style is actually brilliant for midlife hair because it creates the illusion of movement and fullness without relying on lots of short layers,” says Birmingham. “I’d recommend keeping the layers longer and softer to maintain density through the ends, while using styling techniques to build lift around the crown.”

Cusick agrees that precision matters: “On finer hair, you do need a skilled hand because you want to add layers that create movement without removing too much weight, but when it’s done right, it’s incredible.” Very curly hair can also carry the shape, although its layers must be positioned with shrinkage in mind. A stylist experienced in cutting curls will be best placed to tailor the look.

How to Create The Modern Rachel

The secret to Gigi’s finish lies in balancing root lift with smooth, glossy lengths. Begin with heat protectant (my go-to is always Moroccanoil Perfect Defence, £28, then work in small sections, directing the hair away from the face. Allowing each section to cool before touching it helps the shape last longer. “My biggest tip is to style the hair away from the face, then let each section cool before brushing it through gently with your fingers,” says Birmingham. “That gives you soft movement rather than overly defined curls.”

A blow-dry brush or air styler will create the initial lift, but a straightener can be used to refine the shape, bend the face-framing sections and smooth the ends. I used the new ghd Sculpt Styler, £369, which promotes shine and discourages frizz thanks to its fancy Heat-adapt technology. I have layers but usually they just blend in, this allowed me to add intentional cool-girl kinks through the front sections and mid-lengths. “That face-framing quality that made the original so iconic is still completely there, but it's softer, more undone, as Cusick says, “more like your hair just fell that way rather than something you carefully constructed. You’re not trying to recreate that very polished ’90s flick; you’re taking the spirit of it and making it feel like 2026,” she explains. I’ve recently discovered Cécred's Heat Activated Silk Glaze, £32, and it's a game-changer for creating a glass-like finish and almost locking in the style you’ve created. I’ve been using JVN Hair Perfect FlexHold Strengthening Flexible Hairspray, £27, to give hair extra gravitas and keep tufty flyaways in check. If the ends of my hair are starting to look a little worse for wear, Virtue’s Healing Oil, £44, is a godsend at keeping flicks looking the chef’s kiss.

The main pitfalls are over-layering, excessive teasing and ends that have been curled too deliberately. As Birmingham puts it: “Today’s version is all about healthy-looking hair with effortless bounce and natural movement.”

Since writing this article, I have found myself wearing this new version of The Rachel more and more. With its flattering face-framing pieces, fullness-enhancing layers and glossy finish, it simply looks like very good hair. It doesn’t feel like a retro haircut enjoying a brief revival; it feels current, wearable and actually, really easy to achieve, and suitable for everyone.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have been front and centre in 2026, with their highly-anticipated nuptials dominating the headlines.

The Opalite singer and Kansas City Chiefs star announced their engagement in August 2025. And with their wedding rumoured to be taking place this year, details from the location to the celebrity guest list have been going viral.

It was Taylor Swift's upcoming hen party that got the world talking this week, as sources weighed in on the star-studded Bachelorette plans. And judging by the reports, it looks set to be A-list.

According to sources via Us Weekly, the attendees will reportedly include Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid, Kylie Kelce, Brittany Mahomes, Abigail Anderson and Este, Danielle and Alana Haim, who are apparently all "planning something special for Taylor ahead of her big day."

In fact, insiders told the publication that there might have to be more than one trip "so all of her closest friends can be there."

"There could be multiple getaways, and they all will be extremely private, with just Taylor and her close girlfriends," sources reported to Us Weekly, listing New York, Nashville and the Bahamas as the likely destinations.

This is not the first report around Swift's hen party, with sources telling The Sun last year that Gigi Hadid and Selena Gomez were organising at least three or four girls’ trips or bachelorette-style getaways" to mark the occasion.

"The goal is to have fun, spend weekends together, and enjoy the process while also working on the planning in beautiful locations where they can relax, celebrate, and bond," the source reported.

"The bridesmaids have been talking for the past two weeks, several times a week, whether on the phone, through texts, FaceTime, or Zoom. Their commitment is incredibly solid, and the excitement is massive. It’s a truly fun experience for everyone already involved."

"Everyone’s scattered across the world," Swift has previously explained of her friendship group to Emma Bunton during her 2025 appearance on Heart Radio.

"You would think that I had been the type of person who would’ve obsessed over the idea of a wedding my whole life, but I actually never thought about what I would ever do or what I would want until I met the person, so I haven’t actually even thought about [it]."

It's the middle of February, which means it's officially New York Fashion Week, a stretch of days that also manages to encompass Valentine's Day, Lunar New Year and Pancake Day (wow). Back to NYFW, however, and what it really means is a fresh batch of street style, as well as celebrity spottings, to give us inspiration for what to wear this season.

First out of the gates is Gigi Hadid, who walked in the opening show of New York: Ralph Lauren. The model appeared on the streets, which are still an obstacle course of weeks' old snow courtesy of sub-zero weather, wearing an outfit that was simple yet effective.

The first element was a suede trench coat, an item of clothing that has garnered quite the following since the start of 2026, becoming the outerwear of choice on Instagram (many swear by the chocolately brown version from Rise & Fall). It's a lo-fi combination that, nonetheless, semaphores everyday polish, the kind that's attainable even when you're performing a slalom around piles of snow or zipping around in the rain. A final word of advice is to spray your suede—liberally. Only then will it be ready to face the world, and look chic while doing it.

Um hello, are Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper engaged???

Well, the truth is we have absolutely no idea, but fans have begun to think so after the couple's latest joint public appearance.

Gigi celebrated her 30th birthday in New York City over the weekend, arriving hand in hand with boyfriend Bradley. Also on the guest list were Gigi's sister Bella Hadid and their parents Yolanda and Mohamed, Anne Hathaway and her husband Adam Shulman, Emily Ratajkowski and Will Arnett.

Apparently, the lovebirds were totally adorable on the night. "She and Bradley were very cute," a source told People. "They mingled and had fun, but also kissed every time they got near each other."

But Gigi and Bradley being cute together isn't why fans think they're engaged: instead, it's a little something to do with the supermodel's choice of accessories on the night.

In photos of Gigi at her birthday, she can be seen wearing a bunch of rings — including one on her wedding finger.

While the choice of where she wore the ring is raising lots of questions, it's also worth noting that it was a lot simpler than you'd expect an engagement ring to be — although one jeweller believes that doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't one.

"Gigi Hadid wears a simple yellow-gold, slim band, with a minimalist design, without stones or ornate detailing," Ella Citron-Thompkins, jewellery expert at Diamonds Factory, tells Marie Claire, going on to note that Gigi opted for the stacking rings style that is so popular right now.

"The ring isn’t what a traditional engagement ring looks like, but they are becoming increasingly subtle; Dua Lipa’s, for example, showcases a bold, geometric design with a slightly masculine edge, moving away from traditional, ornate styles and embracing a more personal symbol of commitment," notes Ella.

"This shift could suggest that Gigi is indeed engaged, as she may be embracing this modern, minimalist approach to engagement rings, choosing something equally meaningful yet refined."

With all that in mind, a source told People in January that Gigi and Bradley are "serious about each other, but an engagement would be a big step."

They added: "Neither are looking to rush anything, but that’s not to say they’re not very happy together."

A few months later, could things have changed for the couple? We'll sadly have to wait for them to confirm or deny.

I don’t want to get too carried away (on Sunday, I triumphantly declared it “the end of winter” only to wake up on Monday to what weather forecasters on daytime TV like to call ‘a cold snap’, so I’ve learnt my lesson). However, spring is within our sights and with it new outfit opportunities. Suddenly, life seems to have so much potential: there are longer days and lighter layers to look forward to.

Gigi Hadid has gotten a jump on things. The model was spotted at Paris Fashion Week in the ultimate winter-spring transitional outfit: jeans and a bomber. The first jacket in question is by London designer Charlotte Simone and it goes on sale on March 26th when the cult label opens its virtual doors for a one-week-only archive sale.

The ‘Frankie’ jacket comes in washed leather for a love-worn look with a detachable shearling collar and silver-tone hardware and in true transitional fashion, it can be styled as both a jacket and a shirt (or mystery third option: a shacket).

Extra props to Gigi for the added hack of tucking the jacket into the jeans, which added an unexpected air of refinement to an otherwise typically off-duty-model outfit.

Gigi, who is known for a preppier aesthetic, seems to have taken styling tips from her sister Bella Hadid, whose love of a 90s Matrix-esque ensemble is unrivalled. Until now: for her first look, Gigi teamed her leather bomber jacket with an all-black outfit featuring small black shades (a Bella staple), high-rise jeans, and black loafers (something about the matching black socks made it feel even more severe—in a good way). A slicked-back bun pulled the whole thing together, while her typically pared-back makeup softened the monotone look.

The second look was more in keeping with Gigi’s preppy style and played on another spring trend: two-tone dressing. For this, she balanced oversized black leather (and another jacket) with playful pops of ice-white in the form of a snug beanie hat, baby tee, and (again) socks.

The focus here is on layering with versatility, which makes dressing in-between seasons so much easier. The scaled-up proportions of Gigi’s bomber mean you can easily layer it over knits while there’s still a chill, but it’ll work just as well atop a baby tee or dress when spring finally arrives.

Though Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper have been dating since approximately October 2023, very little is publicly known about their relationship.

Now though, the supermodel has opened up for the first time about what it's like to date her movie star boyfriend — and about what it takes to keep some parts of their relationship private.

She described their bond as "very romantic and happy," speaking to American Vogue in a new cover story. She even addressed the comments about their relationship from anonymous sources, which she said are usually "kind of right and kind of wrong." She added: "you just have to let it go; you can’t always correct everything."

Gigi described a more mature relationship than maybe she's had in the past. She said: "I think just getting to the point where knowing what you want and deserve in a relationship is essential, and then to find someone that is in a place in their life where they know what they want and deserve…and you both do work separately to come together and be the best partner that you can be. I just feel really lucky. Yeah, lucky’s the word."

But the model wasn't going to date just about anyone who was ready for a deeper kind of relationship: she obviously has a deep admiration for who Bradley is personally and professionally.

"I respect him so much as a creative, and I feel that he gives so much to me: encouragement and, just, belief," she told Vogue. "For those people you admire to encourage you, it can create so much belief in yourself. Like, what’s the worst thing if I auditioned for this? You jump and take the leap."

That's so lovely.

Since 2023, Bradley and Gigi have been spotted out and about on dates in New York City (she told Vogue he has got her more into the theatre) and elsewhere, but they don't bring each other to industry events — presumably to preserve their privacy in any way they can.

Previously, Gigi was in an on-and-off relationship with One Direction alum Zayn Malik. The two seem to harmoniously coparent their little girl Khai, who is 4. Speaking to Vogue, the supermodel explained that hers and Zayn's relationship these days features "love, and a feeling of camaraderie."

Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper's relationship seems to be going strong, given that they were just spotted together wheeling suitcases at the airport in New York City — suggesting that they're off on a romantic getaway, according to People. While the supermodel and actor have sparked dating rumours for months, they've only been spotted out and about together very occasionally.

In October, reports started circling that the two A-listers were an item after they were seen in NYC together twice. At the time, a source told People: "They are having fun. She’s independent, busy, and her days are filled with responsibilities so I don’t see anything serious happening right away if at all."

The insider continued: "[They have] things in common so it’s possible to see it progress. It appears super casual now, but they both have kids, big careers, busy lives and understand what life is like in these circles. It’s cute… and there is an attraction."

Bradley is on quite the career high at the moment as Maestro, the blockbuster that he directed, produced and starred in, has received a whopping seven Oscar nominations — including one for best picture, one for best actor (for Bradley himself), and one for best actress (for Carey Mulligan). Meanwhile, Gigi's modelling career is as successful as ever, as she's starred in recent campaigns for the likes of Jacquemus, Ralph Lauren, Versace, and Boss.

On the personal side, Bradley shares daughter Lea, 6, with ex Irina Shayk, while Gigi shares daughter Khai, 3, with ex Zayn Malik.

So while both of these celebs have very full lives without bringing romance into it, a source did tell People in December that things were heating up between them. "They were quietly dating for much longer before it went public and were very hush-hush, trying to see if things would work between them," the source said at the time. "They had several months together privately and things have been going really well."

Gigi Hadid has spoken about claims that she's less than happy for Taylor Swift and her blossoming relationship with Travis Kelce. Taylor and Travis are moving pretty quickly, and it didn't go unnoticed when Taylor swapped out a lyric in Karma (originally written for her ex Joe Alwyn) on stage during her Eras Tour in Buenos Aires this weekend, singing: "Karma is the guy on the Chiefs coming straight home to me."

The two have been continually been spotted out and about on date nights in New York City, facing each other adoringly. But recent rumours have swirled that not everybody is happy for the singer, with it being reported that some friends are unsure if she's 'handling' the situation very well. A recent claim asserted that her best friend Selena Gomez was 'concerned' about the speed at which they appeared to be moving.

An article on Perez Hilton's website claimed that Gigi, who is part of Taylor's inner circle of pals, 'isn’t totally on board' with the relationship, quoting a source that said: "One of the reasons Gigi hasn’t attended any of Travis’ games is because she doesn’t agree with the way Taylor has been acting with [him]."

But Gigi has been quick to put this to bed, commenting on a post that appeared on Perez's Instagram: "Didn’t the press try this last week w Selena? Let it be.. we are all over the moon for our girl. Period."  Can't be clearer than that!

In terms of the Selena Gomez mention, Gigi's likely referencing another recent report, this time from Page Six, where an apparent 'insider' has leaked how Taylor's friends feel about her new relationship.

The source told Page Six: "Selena thinks Taylor going to games and galavanting through New York immediately after just meeting Travis is something that is very unlike her. Historically, Taylor’s always been super private about everything, and now with this [relationship], she’s so open about it that it’s just very odd for Selena. Selena just doesn’t want to be part of the media frenzy because it’s really chaotic."

Selena hasn't confirmed or denied the claims, but we can assume there isn't much to them if Gigi's comments are anything to go by.

Back to Gigi's comments, and it's safe to say the Swifties loved seeing her stick up for her long-time friend, with one writing on X (formerly Twitter): "Omg I’ve never seen Taylor’s friends comment on her relationships this is so cute." 

Another said: "Gigi putting the rumours to rest. The queen that she is."

Meanwhile, Taylor's relationship with Travis has been going from strength to strength since the latter pursued the singer after attending her Eras Tour in Kansas City in the summer. 

Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper are reportedly dating casually, after they were spotted together in New York twice recently. That said, it's nothing serious at the moment — at least according to one anonymous source.

"They are having fun," the source told People. "She’s independent, busy, and her days are filled with responsibilities so I don’t see anything serious happening right away if at all."

The insider added that Gigi "had sort of a crush on [Cooper] for a while," meaning there's a chance she might consider dating him more seriously if it came up as a possibility.

"[They have] things in common so it’s possible to see it progress," the source continued. "It appears super casual now, but they both have kids, big careers, busy lives and understand what life is like in these circles. It’s cute…and there is an attraction."

Gigi and Bradley appeared to share two dinner dates while in NYC, one at Via Carota last Thursday, and one on Sunday.

Gigi was most recently linked on and off to Leonardo DiCaprio, between September 2022 and just a few weeks ago. Before that, she was in a years-long relationship on and off relationship with Zayn Malik, with whom she shares daughter Khai, 3.

The Next in Fashion presenter marked Khai's birthday in September by posting a photo of the little girl's celebratory meal on Instagram. She wrote: "Have been celebrating our THREE YR OLD this week & just so honored to get to be her mama, to get to see life through her !!!! Happy Birthday to my sweetest, smartest, spunkiest bestie !!!!!!!! DREAM KID / love of my life"

Bradley, as for him, was in a relationship with Irina Shayk between 2015 and 2017, and shares daughter Lea, 6, with the supermodel. The Maestro actor was also married to actress Jennifer Esposito between 2006 and 2007.

As for Gigi and Bradley, Page Six reports that they arrived back to New York together in the same car on Saturday, looking like they were on their way back from a romantic getaway. Let's see how it progresses!

Back in September, the world was rather surprised to learn that Gigi Hadid and Leonardo DiCaprio were dating. 

Just a month after splitting from model Camila Morrone after four years together, the Wolf of Wall Street actor was said to be besotted with Gigi, with a source telling US Weekly: "He thinks she’s beautiful of course but also a wise and cool character who’s got a very cultured and educated take on life."

It also spurred a number of headlines claiming that Leo doesn't date any woman over 25 as "he’s gotten older but his taste has not gotten any older", apparently. 

However, Gigi and Leo - joint name Gionardo? - seemed to buck this supposed age rule, given that the model turned 27 last year. 

While the couple garnered a number of stans rather quickly, it was reported in January that they were only casually dating, and earlier this month they had cooled things off as it had 'fizzled out'. 

So many were surprised to hear that Gigi and Leo were spotted spending time together in Italy last week as Milan Fashion Week unfolded. In photos published by TMZ, the pair were seen leaving restaurant Casa Cipriani just ten minutes apart.

But for anyone hoping this signals a reunion, notions of romance were quickly quashed as a source claimed they're 'just friends'. 

According to Entertainment Tonight, an insider said: "Gigi and Leo spent time together in Milan but they are just friends and are not dating.

"The two get along well and were enjoying time together with friends...Gigi's priority is her daughter and her business and that's what she's focusing on right now."

So, that's that.

Gigi Hadid has pledged to donate all of her earnings from every show she has modelled for over the numerous cities Fashion Weeks to support Ukrainian Relief.

On February 24, Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, launched an attack on Ukraine, which has had devastating consequences with over 300 lives lost and more Ukrainian families displaced in just over one week.

The 26-year-old model had decided to take action amidst the war on Russia, and has followed in the footsteps of fellow model Mica Argañaraz in handing over her entire earnings made from the Autumn/Winter 2022 fashion shows she has been involved in.

She will also donate her proceeds to support those suffering in Palestine also.

Gigi shared her decision on her Instagram account, as she wrote: "Having a set Fashion Month schedule has meant that my colleagues and I often present new fashion collections during heartbreaking and traumatic times in history. We don’t have control over most of our work schedules, but we would like to walk ‘for’ something.

"Following in the footsteps of my friend @micarganaraz, I am pledging to donate my earnings from the Fall 2022 shows to aid those suffering from the war in Ukraine, as well as continuing to support those experiencing the same in Palestine.

"Our eyes and hearts must be open to all human injustice. May we all see each other as brothers and sisters, beyond politics, beyond race, beyond religion. At the the end of the day, innocent lives pay for war- not leaders.

"HANDS OFF UKRAINE. HANDS OFF PALESTINE. PEACE. PEACE. PEACE."

Over this year's Fashion Week Gigi has modelled across Paris and Milan, gracing the runway for brands including Michael Kors, Versace as well as Vivienne Westwood, Moschino, Off White and Isabel Marant.

Fellow models, as well as designers have showed their support and admiration to Gigi for her generosity.

Poppy Delevingne commented: "A true angel", while Jeremy Scott shared heart and prayer emojis.

Gigi's actions come shortly after major fashion brands temporarily cease trading in Russia amidst the war on Ukraine.

Hermès, Chanel and Gucci have ceased trading, alongside beauty company L’Oreal.

Hermès – famed for the iconic Birkin Bag – and Richemont, who own Cartier, were first to make the move to close stores and halt trading during the horrific invasion.

Chanel confirmed they were stopping business in Russia on LinkedIn, and shared their reason for stopping sales in a post, which read: “Given our increasing concerns about the current situation, the growing uncertainty and the complexity to operate, Chanel decided to temporarily pause its business in Russia.”

Kering – who own Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen and Kering Eyewear – followed suit on Friday 4 March, a decision which British designer brand, Burberry, also backed.

Apple, Microsoft, Ikea, Nike, ASOS and Adidas have since suspended sales in Russia too.

Ikea has suspended activities and e-commerce in Russia and Belarus, and has donated €20 million (£17 million) for Ukrainian refugees who have had no choice but to leave Ukraine.

Both Selena and Gigi fell in love with the style after they stylists, Kate Young and Mimi Cutrell, who posted their looks on their Instagram pages.

Meanwhile, Olivia Palermo has long been a fan of Aspinal, and back in 2015, she created a tote bag with the brand. She has since been spotted carrying the Hat Box, Micro Hat Box and Midi Mayfair.

As its name suggest, Aspinal's latest campaign celebrates the iconic Mayfair handbag collection, plus the launch of a brand new Nano Mayfair, the tiniest member of the family.

It's now available in almost 20 shades, including gorgeous metallic colours perfect for party season.

Gigi Hadid has teamed up with Tommy Hilfiger for her first foray into design. We hit New York for an exclusive chat.

‘If you want to be the captain, you can be the fucking captain!’ says Gigi Hadid, giving one slender leg an enthusiastic slap. We’re sitting in a New York hotel room discussing the ‘girl power sailor’ theme of her very first design gig – a 36-piece capsule collection with Tommy Hilfiger.

She’s wearing two of the items as we speak: a pair of high-waisted, indigo-denim flares with tiny anchors on the buttons, and a viscose navy-and-white striped top, the long sleeves stretched over her manicured hands like fingerless gloves. ‘We even made a captain’s hat, too!’ she adds with a grin.

The rest of the collection (hat included) is hanging on a rail just outside the door. There’s a round-neck navy sweater with a large anchor and rope motif printed on it – pleasingly 80s – a belted military coat with a ‘Hilfiger-Hadid’ badge on the lapel, and the sort of oversized cream fisherman’s sweater you could bury yourself in on a particularly cold morning.

Gone are the days when supermodels were lofty clothes horses, who earned their crust solely on catwalks and in campaigns. In the past few years, LA-born Gigi Hadid (and her pal Kendall Jenner, who she met in 2014) have redefined the role, opening themselves up to their huge online following and trading as much on their personalities and ‘girls before bros’ friendships as their looks. These days, the modelling just feels like the base layer.

‘Kendall never tries too hard,’ Hadid says of her best friend now. ‘She never looks uncomfortable in what she’s wearing. I think that’s why we get along so well, because even outside of our style that’s our personalities, we’re just very easy-going.’

The Tommy x Gigi collaboration

For Gigi Hadid, designing her own collection was more a question of when rather than if, and Hilfiger felt like the obvious choice. The Hadid and Hilfiger families have been friends since the model was little (Hadid’s mum, Yolanda, found her own fame as one of the Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills), and she and her sister Bella led the runway charge for his beach-themed SS16 show last year in swimsuits and primary-coloured bucket hats.

Hilfiger recalls witnessing Hadid morph from family friend into one of the most in-demand supermodels in the world. ‘I’d known her family for a long time and when she was first put forward, I was like, “Are you crazy? Of course we should do something together, she’s beautiful!” We put her on the runway and she received more photographs than anyone ever, so that was very interesting.’

The idea of designing ‘a few pieces’ together quickly swelled to an entire collection. ‘She came in with tear sheets and ideas, and sent some pictures – Pinterest photos,’ says Hilfiger. ‘And she was wearing some stylish clothes herself – an oversized bomber, a pair of really cool sneakers... very nonchalant.’

Scheduled one-hour design sessions at Hilfiger HQ easily stretched to seven or eight hours. ‘I would just draw, or start patching things, and then I’d think, “Oh shit, I have to actually ask them if I can do this,”’ says Hadid. ‘Then I’d turn around and they’d tell me, “We love it!” So I’d go, “Alright, cool. I’m just gonna keep doing this.”’

And while Hadid brought her many mood boards of fresh ideas to the table, Hilfiger – with his 30 years of design experience – provided the guidance. ‘We never butted heads in our design process, which is good,’ recalls Hadid. ‘And he also gave me so much freedom. He was more like the supervisor, and I wanted to make him proud.’

Perhaps in keeping with the new, media-savvy see-it-buy-it generation of which Gigi Hadid is a part, for the first time ever the Tommy x Gigi collection – along with the Tommy Hilfiger main line – will be available to buy on the day it’s unveiled to the press and public, rather than six months later. ‘We’ve been talking about doing it for a very long time,’ says Hilfiger. ‘And it got to the point where we said we should just do it.’

Hadid says she’ll be ordering the lot. ‘If [people] don’t see me wearing the collection on the street when it comes out, there’s a problem. I had to make every piece wearable, and think about my fans’ and friends’ styles... those are the girls who inspire me, so I tried to design with every one of them in mind.’
