Astrology is becoming the latest addition to the wedding planning checklist, promising meaning, alignment and the “perfect” date. And after internet sleuths speculated that Dua Lipa may have timed her recent wedding by the stars—or, more specifically, the Blue Moon—the trend has never felt more mainstream. But as couples increasingly look to the cosmos for answers, Mischa Smith asks: is this a genuine ritual, or simply another way to optimise an already over-engineered day?

When Dua Lipa married Callum Turner in Marylebone Town Hall on Sunday, astrology accounts wasted no time analysing the date. Within hours, social media was awash with theories that the singer may have used electional astrology—the practice of choosing auspicious moments for major life events—to plan her wedding. There is no evidence that she did, but the speed with which the internet began searching for signs of cosmic timing was revealing. Astrology has become so culturally embedded that major milestones are now regularly interpreted through an astrological lens.

That shift extends far beyond celebrity weddings, too. Once considered a niche spiritual practice, astrology is increasingly being folded into the wedding planning process itself. Couples are consulting astrologers to choose dates, times and even locations for their ceremonies, hoping to imbue the day with meaning, alignment and, perhaps, a little extra luck. In an era of rising costs, endless choice and Pinterest-perfect expectations, the promise of cosmic certainty can be difficult to resist.

When one couple began planning their Ibizan wedding, they weren’t just thinking about the venue or the guest list; they were thinking about the energy. Working with astrologer Clarisse Monahan, they set out to create what Monahan describes as “a raucous wedding”, building the day around “a lot of fire energy” and an emphasis on excess. Set on a Balearic island already synonymous with indulgence—and with one of the couple’s Jupiter lines coursing straight through it—the wedding chart (an astrological “birth chart” for a marriage, not to be confused with the more traditional wedding seating chart) leaned into that atmosphere. “Very showy and over the top”, recalls Monahan, with the focus less on tradition or stability, but instead on spectacle and pleasure.

Where ceremonies were once defined by religion, and more recently by aesthetics—the perfect tablescape, photo moments, those all-too-ubiquitous namesake cocktails—they are now being treated as moments that need to carry cosmic meaning. Weddings today don’t just have to look good; they have to feel good, too.

For a growing number of couples, that feeling is being shaped by astrology. “Couples spend so much on their wedding anyway,” says Monahan. “So it makes sense to want to have the ideal time to do it.” Neda Farr, whose astrology-led relationship reels have racked up 170 million views on TikTok alone, has seen a similar shift: where clients once asked when they might get engaged, they’re now asking when to marry, and how to make sure “nothing is working against them” when they do.

Of course, none of this is entirely new. Astrology has long shaped wedding timing in places like India, where muhurats—auspicious times—are traditionally used to determine when a couple should marry. What’s changed is the framing, especially for Western couples who are navigating an ecosystem of abundant choice, pressure and personalisation rather than utilising inherited rituals.

If astrology is finding new relevance in weddings, it’s not happening in a vacuum. The modern wedding is an unusually high-stakes event: financially costly and often logistically fraught. Couples are expected not only to host, but to produce something memorable: an experience that feels seamless, unique, and increasingly, shareable. When a single day can cost tens of thousands—the average UK wedding costs £21,990—the pressure for it to be meaningful, if not perfect, is difficult to ignore.

At the same time, personalisation has become its own form of cultural currency. To choose well is no longer a private act. Weddings have always functioned as a form of social signalling, a way of demonstrating taste and discernment; yet where once that might have been reserved for the day alone and the guests present, today they live online forever.

Increasingly, weddings are being planned for how they will be seen, shared, and, in some cases, validated by external arbiters of taste. In a culture that rewards individuality, even individuality begins to look formulaic against a backdrop of hyper-curated aesthetics. Astrology, in that context, doesn’t just offer meaning, it offers a way of explaining why this date, why this location.

“I think what people want is an alignment,” says Chani Nicholas, an astrologer and New York Times best-selling author. “Astrology is not about control… it’s about meaning.” To choose a date under “good omens”, she suggests, is less about predicting the future than it is about creating a moment that feels intentional, and, above all, right.

Faced with an overwhelming number of decisions, couples are looking for ways to narrow the field. “A lot of the time, just knowing you’ve picked a good electional (date) gives you a sense of confidence,” says Monahan. “It makes you more thoughtful.” Rather than dictating every detail, astrology becomes a way of approaching those decisions with a degree of certainty, however provisional.

But astrology doesn’t actually give couples control, at least not in the way they might hope. Most arrive at it late in the process, after the major decisions have already been made: the venue booked, the Saturday secured. “Most of the time it’s like, ‘We’re getting married on this day—can you tell me the best time within that?’” says Nicholas. “You’re working within a lot of constraints.”

Then there are the exceptions where astrology doesn’t just guide the wedding, it structures it. Neda describes clients seeking “the perfect step-by-step” timeline: when to schedule beauty treatments, when to shop for a dress, when to get married. Rather than a single auspicious date, the process becomes a carousel of optimised decisions. “There are usually three good windows,” she says, “and one perfect window.” Whether that alignment has any measurable effect is, of course, harder to prove, but its emotional appeal is undeniable.

Astrology’s growing role in weddings is also a product of how widely it now circulates. Once the preserve of specialists, it’s become part of our daily language, delivered through apps like Co–Star and an endless stream of TikTok explainers. “People are learning tidbits of astrology… in slideshow form,” says Neda, often distilled into insights that feel immediate and personal.

That mainstreaming is also clear in how quickly astrology has been absorbed into the wedding industry itself. Sites like The Knot now publish guides to “lucky” wedding dates, while Brides offers zodiac-based advice on the best time of year to marry. Even dating apps are following suit: Tinder has introduced an “astrology mode”, using birth chart data to shape matches. According to insight analysts at TrendHunter, this signals a broader shift towards “hyper-personalised compatibility scoring”, where identity, rather than behaviour, becomes the basis for recommendation.

Taken together, it suggests a shift in how astrology is being used. What was once a reflective practice is increasingly packaged as a service: something you can use to optimise almost every aspect of your life. As Monahan cautions, that can flatten it into something reductive. “People are still reading for their sun sign,” she notes, a shorthand that risks oversimplifying a much more complex system. In that sense, astrology’s rise is not just about belief, but about how it fits into a culture already geared towards personalisation. The promise, then, isn’t just meaning, but a version of it tailored and sold precisely to you.

That desire for an entirely personalised experience reaches a fever pitch when it comes to weddings. Monahan describes working with a bride determined to create a fully Disney-themed wedding: dress, setting, atmosphere and all. To match that vision, the chart was built around Neptune, the planet associated with dreams, fantasy and illusion. “Disney for me is so Neptunian,” she explains, describing how the couple chose a date where those qualities would be most pronounced, with the aim of creating something “ethereal” and immersive.

It’s not Monahan’s typical wedding chart experience, but it is a telling one. In a culture increasingly oriented around individual expression, the pressure to avoid anything that feels ‘cookie cutter’ has intensified. Weddings aren’t only expected to be beautiful; they’re expected to be distinct. Astrology offers that.

For some, the question goes beyond timing altogether. Around a quarter of Neda’s clients, she says, are seeking reassurance that they’re marrying the right person in the first place. “They want to make sure that they’re cosmically aligned with that person they’re marrying,” she explains.

Astrology, of course, doesn’t remove all uncertainty. “You always have to beware—you might get the answer that you don’t want,” says Nicholas. And even the most carefully constructed chart, like the Ibizan wedding engineered for excess, can only help guide the mood, not the outcome. But for an industry increasingly shaped by pressure, cost and expectation, astrology offers something else: the feeling, however fleeting, that the moment has landed exactly where it was meant to.

Technically, the night began 200 miles away. Prior to the ceremony, artists and insiders, including Harris Dickinson, Nick Grimshaw, AJ Odudu, and Jaime Winstone (who belted out a rendition of Britpop hit You're Gorgeous mid-journey), gathered at Euston Station to board the legendary British Pullman. The art deco carriages, all polished walnut wood and plush upholstery, felt less like a train and more like a moving film set. In fact, the train has played host to many iconic films, and this year sees Baz Luhrmann unveil his bespoke decorated carriage on the historic train. Uniformed bellboys whisked guests into private cabins where flutes of Hennessy Paradis and icy Henny-Ritas appeared as if by magic.

Enter the Poodles

By the time the train pulled into Manchester, the tone had been set, and that booze-fuelled pandemonium continued post-awards show at The Cut & Craft, which had been transformed for the night. Looming at the entrance was a five-metre-tall poodle installation, a playful update on last year’s bejewelled bananas.

The theme, “Party Poodles,” riffed on the rebellious spirit of 24 Hour Party People and Manchester’s clubland mythology, blending archival nods to cultural icons and their dogs, from David Bowie to Winston Churchill, with glossy nightlife theatrics.

Inside, guests, including Rosé, who earlier that night had become the first K-pop artist to win a BRIT Award, danced on poodle-covered carpets while oversized inflatable sculptures floated overhead.

The Soundtrack of the Night

Upstairs, DJ sets rolled from G2 to Kim Turnbull before Gjin Lipa and Tommy Gold amped the energy to a fever pitch. Then came Groove Armada for a heady dose of nostalgia. Sequins sent spectrums of light across the room, glinting against the light of serving platters filled with bespoke Hennessy cocktails, including the Hennessy X.O Espresso Martini.

Downstairs, Manchester collective Suns of Acid, the next-gen offspring of 808 State and Happy Mondays, hosted a hedonistic basement club that paid homage to the city’s acid house roots. Fittingly, Bez was one of the last guests to leave, having traded his signature maracas for a gargantuan baker boy hat.

The Morning After

If most afterparties end in bleary-eyed goodbyes, this one came with a Sunday service. Guests reconvened aboard the British Pullman for the journey back to London, where a Sunday roast was served alongside Hennessy Ice Teas. Guests were overheard initially refusing the welcome Bloody Marys but were soon quaffing Champagne and signature Hennessy bevs. By the time London came back into view, the poodles had been defeated, but the mood hadn’t.

I don't know about you, but my nails are in desperate need of some TLC. Between the festive season, New Year's, and the first doldrum days of January, my pre-holiday manicure has grown out, and I'm hankering for something fun to bring some pep to my step (and my hands).

Of course, you can get the look in the salon, but if you're taking a break from gels like me, the expert explains that it's very straightforward to achieve the 'halo manicure' at home.

• To create a halo manicure, start with neatly prepped nails. File and shape them evenly, then gently push back the cuticles and cleanse the nails to remove any oils or residue.
• Apply one thin coat of base coat and allow it to dry. Follow with two coats of your chosen base shade, making sure the first layer is completely dry before applying the second. This can be anything from a soft neutral to a brighter colour, depending on how bold you want the look to be.
• Once the colour is dry, use a fine nail art or striping brush to trace a thin outline around the edge of the nail in a different shade, following the natural shape of the nail to create the ‘halo’ effect. Apply two coats to the outline, allowing the first to dry before adding the second.
• Finish with a glossy top coat to seal everything in and smooth the design.

For obvious reasons, British summers have long been about the promise of a getaway. Summer offers a break from the oppressive drizzle and slate grey of the UK, in its place: the golden haze of the Mediterranean, wild Balearic nights, craggy coastal retreats.

Now, I don’t want to wax lyrical, but if there's one person who understands the sacred, unspoken dress code of summer, it’s Dua Lipa. Her holiday wardrobe, broadcast to us sun-starved, desk-bound onlookers in glorious carousel form, is excellent.

Think crochet cherries, see-through mesh, tobacco-tinted sunglasses, and a revolving cast of tiny bikinis. It is here that I want to focus because as far as I can tell, we haven’t been treated to such an impressive selection of beachwear in ages.

There have been polka dot (the It Girl’s print of choice this summer) triangle tops, Lurex leopard spots, Breton stripes, and a particularly excellent studded set from Hunza G complete with matching manicure. Also in attendance: sarong-slash-skirts, silk headscarves, and lashings of layered jewellery. No one works a summer wardrobe quite like Dua Lipa.

The Year of the Snake, which according to the zodiac, will begin on January 29th 2025 and end on February 16th 2026, is considered a time for reflection, growth, and transformation. You might say, it’s time to shed old skin.

And while I love the chance to start afresh in the New Year, it doesn’t have to be as overhauling as, say, committing to 75 Hard or Dry January. New Year, and more broadly new starts, can mean reimagining your wardrobe and how you want to present yourself.

Of course, everyone’s favourite pop girly has a signature style (a bit Y2K, very London-coded, and an enviable selection of bags), but perhaps what’s most notable is how Dua Lipa draws references from different eras and sub-cultures.

A true millennial (even if only just), Dua Lipa represents how trend cycles run these days. Namely, that every day we all get the chance to choose a different persona. It’s something I catch myself doing; bouncing between different reference points and inspirations, never really committing to one look—why limit myself?

And yet, despite endless sartorial choices, snake print somehow always holds its status as an icon of playfulness, luxury, and timeless style—two of those descriptors should be mutually exclusive; it’s a testament to the endless styling possibilities of the print that snakeskin can call to mind both Carrie Bradshaw and Kim Kardashian.

And despite being part of Alexander McQueen’s seminal Spring Summer 2010 collection (and being a staple of Versace shows since the nineties, to give just one more example), the print has never felt like it belonged to any one designer.

Dua Lipa and Callum Turner have rapidly become the internet's favourite couple, but they've recently ignited some engagement rumours that are confusing fans. So, are the lovebirds engaged to be married? Here's what we know.

On New Year's Eve, the popstar posted some VERY intriguing photos of herself on Instagram, which prominently featured a rather large gold ring with what looks like a precious stone embedded in it. This piece of bling was on Dua's ring finger, leading fans to speculate about the jewel and its potential significance.

"Show ‘em the riiiingggg," wrote one person, while another added: "Ok engagement ring"

Dua started dating Callum, a British actor, in early 2024. Last January, the singer sparked romance rumours when she showed up to support her new boyfriend after the premiere of his miniseries Masters of the Air.

They were spotted out and about together, holding hands, after the BAFTAs last February, and on a few other occasions were seen spending time together and even kissing.

The sweet couple have been photographed together a handful of times since then, including in arrivals at St. Pancras International station in London in March, holding hands while going out for dinner in New York in April, and enjoying some fun and sun at Glastonbury Festival in June — a true Alex and Alexa for our time.

As for the alleged engagement, a source told The Sun for a story published on 31 December: "Dua and Callum are so in love and know this is forever.

“They are engaged and couldn’t be happier."

The insider continued: "Dua has had one of the best years of her career professionally and this is the cherry on the cake.

"Callum is such a solid support for Dua and they make a wonderful couple. Their family and friends are so happy. It’s been an amazing Christmas for them."

At the time of writing, like Dua Lipa, I am holed up in the South West of England, but sadly, that is where the similarities end. I am not gorging on caviar topped jacket spuds and despite growing up in Devon (the Glastonbury headliner is currently staycationing in Cornwall), I have never quite mastered the coastal-cool look.

Dua Lipa’s love of travelling is well known; this summer, the Radical Optimism singer has holidayed in Capri to celebrate Jacquemus’ 15th anniversary, gallery-hopped in Berlin while on tour, and sifted through vintage books in Tokyo—and that’s just what we’ve been privy to on Instagram. Talking about her close-knit family in an interview with Marie Claire UK earlier this year, Lipa said, “We’re always travelling together... It’s about having time alone and being able to hang out as a group.”

So it stands to reason that she knows a thing or two about packing for a holiday. In typical Dua Lipa fashion, there was a playful mix of prints (a relaxed black sweater paired with a billowy tiger-print skirt and Cowboy boots is pleasingly easy to replicate), graphic tees, and plenty of black, as well as layered gold chains and the ever-present claw clip.

Captioned; “20 slides in a photo dump is a bit insane but I did it anyway”, the carousel made the most of the platform’s new feature and gave fans (of which there are many) an extended glimpse into Lipa’s seaside retreat. In the dump (which has garnered a dizzying 1.9 million likes and 5,134 comments), Lipa revealed glimmers of her time on the Cornish Coast, which included hiking the South West Coast Path, playing in the surf with her s/o’s Callum Turner’s Labrador-Rottweiler mix dog, and lounging in an assortment of swimwear.

"French Exit," off the popstar's album Radical Optimism, was released over the past few days, and already fans have a theory as to who it might be about.

The song is ostensibly about Dua breaking up with someone by doing a "French exit," also known as ghosting.

The chorus goes: "It's not a broken heart if I don't break it / 'Goodbye' doesn't hurt if I don't say it / And I really hope you'll understand it / Only way to go is a French exit"

And one of the verses appears to explain the reason behind the breakup: "Maybe time away will make it make sеnse / I'm better at a clеan break than leaving doors open / I know you're gonna say I shoulda stayed till the end / But right now, I can't give you what you want"

Immediately after Dua announced the tracklist for her album, fans singled out "French Exit" as being about her ex Romain Gavras (who is French), and now that the song is out, fans are not changing their minds.

Obviously, Dua herself hasn't — and is unlikely to — directly confirmed or denied whether the song is about Romain.

Instead, she has said about the track that it's "definitely different from anything anyone has heard" in her previous music.

Meanwhile, Dua and Romain — a director of films and music videos — had a short relationship last year, and if one source is to be believed concerning the romance, one that definitely tracks with the lyrics of "French Exit."

"Dua and Romain have gone their separate ways after a summer of love," an insider told The Sun in December.

"She has blinkers on when it comes to her career and the pair ended the relationship before things turned sour." AKA a French exit? Who's to say.

According to his iMDb page, Callum's impressive career so far includes parts in the Fantastic Beasts series, the Emma film alongside Emma Mackey, and the TV mini series War & Peace, among others. Sharing her skincare secrets, Dua said: "The best gift I’ve received recently is an infrared face light, from my mum. You can fold it into your suitcase and take it with you, which is handy because I’m always travelling. Before bed, I lie down and I pretty much sleep under it. It has this really relaxing, warming feeling, and I see a difference in my skin: I don’t break out as much".

Speaking of gifts, Dua has also shared a very special gift Sir Elton John gifted her after she sang at the music legend's Aids Foundation's Oscars pre-party last year, which she admitted was a "pinch me moment", and now her lucky charm.

Addressing the very generous gift the Rocketman singer treated her too, she said: "An object that I would never part with is a vintage diamond ring that Elton John gave me. Last year Elton invited me to sing at his Aids Foundation’s Oscars pre-party, and before we performed together I got invited to his room to hang out. It was already a major pinch-me moment, and then he said he wanted to give me something special that belonged to him, and he produced this gorgeous gold band ring with a diamond on it. I never take it off – I feel like it brings me luck."
