<p><br></p>
<p>Jadie started her career at Marie Claire UK in 2018 when she joined the team as the Lifestyle and Social Media Editor, writing news and lifestyle features while managing the brands social channels and strategy. In 2022, she became the site’s News Editor and writes about everything from the latest dating show to politics to the seasonal Starbucks menus - all while overseeing a team of brilliant writers.&nbsp;</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>While her day-to-day generally revolves around daily news reporting, she can also be found testing unique experiences like spooning circles and orgasm workshops, committing to sweaty fitness challenges to see what all the fuss is about, or jetting off to find the best cocktails in Beverly Hills.</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>During her time at the University of Sussex studying English Literature and Drama, she blagged her way into a job as a theatre and music reviewer for the local paper and headed the university’s creative writing club.&nbsp; After graduating, she spent a year working as an intern for as many magazines as would take her before moving to Australia and travelling for almost three years. When she got back to the UK, she qualified as an NCTJ accredited journalist at News Associates and quickly landed her first job in the industry.&nbsp;</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>Jadie went on to work for a number of women’s fashion and lifestyle titles, including Grazia, Women’s Health and Stylist, and while there have been some incredible career highlights over the years (interviewing celebrities and reviewing boujee destinations) she has also embarrassed herself many times, whether it was impromptu beatboxing in front of a confused Disney star or hosting an awkward Facebook Live while making a milkshake.</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>For the last four years, she has happily been a part of the MC UK team, and when she’s not using her year 12 touch typing skills to pump out content at an impressive speed, she is blaming Mercury in retrograde for her problems, watching <em>Les Miserables</em> with a hangover, or travelling. She would be the perfect addition to any pub quiz team thanks to her impressive knowledge of the royal family, celebrity gossip and ability to decipher anagrams.</p>

I'm fortunate enough to live by myself, which means that if I want to watch nothing but Grey's Anatomy reruns, I absolutely can. I'm only ever a few clicks away from The Departed (again) and my go-to horror films are on a constant viewing loop.

But as a creature of comfort, it also means I'm notoriously picky when it comes to watching new things. The benefit of living with housemates or a significant other is that they usually have something to say if you're hogging the TV with vintage Made In Chelsea every night. So this year, I made a conscious effort to break out of my telly rut - and it has led to some pretty excellent finds. Thanks to early nudges from industry insiders, I make a note of what's coming up and pick out the best bits.

So, what's making the cut in November?

Disney Princesses at dinner, buffets overspilling with oysters and lobster towers, immersive performances in the lobby and a full menu of rejuvenating spa treatments - the ultimate five-star Disneyland Hotel has arrived, and it’s just across the English Channel.

Why Go

The iconic hotel, situated in the heart of the Disneyland Paris resort, has created a royal residence and everyone’s invited. Tiny guests, who want to feel like mini Princesses, can descend the lobby stairs in puffy gowns with Disney’s most recognisable ones. Couples looking for fine dining, complete with exclusively-made Champagne and beautifully crafted desserts, can marvel at the menu at La Table de Lumière. And post-ride peace-seekers, who long to relax after a day of darting around the parks, can unwind at the Crystal Pool & Health Club.

There’s something undeniably magical about Disneyland Paris, but there’s no ignoring the regally-infused luxury at the newly re-opened hotel. And you don’t need to be seven years old or a die-hard Disney fan to enjoy it. Whether you’re looking for a family stay that the little ones will remember forever or you’re an adult who wants a splash of nostalgic magic with a five-star twist, there are no age restrictions when it comes to feeling like royalty here.

The Vibe

After almost three years of renovations, the Disneyland Hotel has opened its doors once again - and what luxurious doors they are. The hotel, which has been accommodating guests since 1992, has had a complete royal ‘reimagining'. From the moment you walk into the lobby, you’ll be met with Disney decadence - there’s a six metre chandelier dripping with 12,000 glass stars and beads, housing its own sparkling impression of the Disney Castle. Further down, you'll see a bifurcated staircase lined with gold bannisters that regularly sees the footfall of Aurora, Belle and Cinderella themselves (much to the smaller guests’ glee). And if you're really into the musical magic of Disney, you may find that the check-in staff serenades you with a rendition of A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes.

As for the location, you're the closest you could possibly be to the park action. In fact, the Disneyland Hotel guests are already at the turnstiles once they leave the lobby, and from inside the hotel direct views of the Disney Castle can be found in various spots, including the restaurants and a handful of suites.

For a unique experience exclusive to hotel guests, little ones who want to live out the full Prince or Princess fairytale can book an appointment at the in-house costume shop, My Royal Dream. Older guests might prefer to book a massage at the Clarins Spa, or sink into the jacuzzi at the Crystal Pool & Health Club.

The Rooms

Throughout the Disneyland Hotel, the attention to detail is remarkable - but it’s in one of the 487 bedrooms that you’ll really notice it. In the Deluxe Rooms, you’ll find everything you'd usually expect from a five-star hotel: deliciously fluffy bathrobes and towels, an enormous (and blissfully comfy) double bed, and a well stocked coffee treasure chest. Naturally. What you’ll also find in these rooms are some undeniably impressive Disney touches. There’s a glittering fibre optic canopy which changes colour at the touch of the bedside button, the carpet is laced with subtle motif nods to Snow White, Aladdin and Peter Pan, and the mirror actually doubles up as a TV. Really. Oh, and there’s a pillow menu.

If you’re feeling flush the opulent (and pricer) Signature Suites are tucked away on the private third and fourth floors, and they are the epitome of extravagance. As well as access to a private park lift and private lounges, you’ll find Princess Aurora’s colour-changing dress in the Sleeping Beauty suite, and its Frozen neighbour boasts a suit of armour mannequin. Guests can enjoy a buffet breakfast at the Royal Banquet restaurant, complete with the usual combination of yoghurts, fruit and flakey croissants. However, it’s the elevated additions that will grab your attention; think sweet waffles aptly embossed with crowns, a selection of quality PDO and AOP cheeses, dry-aged Charolais beef roses and bread embellished with a chocolate fleur de lys.

By dinnertime, the Royal Banquet restaurant has become a playground for Disney characters as well as diners. Don’t be surprised if Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Pluto - all dressed in their regal attire - come flouncing in while you’re tucking into your Princess Tiana-shaped petit four. During the evening sitting, the mouth-watering cheese table (complete with cider and blackberry chocolate confits) is a good place to start, followed by a tasting plate of sweet stuffed mini peppers, chicken paté en croute and juicy sun-dried tomatoes. For the main event, head to the unmissable lobster tower (enveloped by freshly shucked oysters, king prawns and crab claws, no less), or take your pick from the selection of roasted meats for your mains.

If you really want to take things up a notch, book a reservation at La Table de Lumière. With sparkling chandeliers, gold grid mirrors and a bell jar rose on every table, it’s impossible not to feel like Belle herself. This fine dining offering - with a three-course royal menu of langoustines, succulent roast Montbéliard beef and fluffy vanilla bavarois - is an experience in itself, and is not to be missed.

Head to the Fleur de Lys bar just a few steps away for a signature cocktail or a glass of the Disneyland Hotel’s exclusive Maison Pierre Mignon champagne.
Echo, a new Marvel miniseries that focuses on the story of Maya Lopez, dropped on Disney+ this week and critics are calling the show a triumph - not only for its engaging backstory and fearless anti-hero, but also its ability to navigate challenging themes and give representation to marginalised communities in the Marvel Multiverse. Adam Barnhardt of ComicBook.com is calling it 'one of the best things Marvel Studios has created in the past few years'.

Disability representation is nothing new within the Marvel universe and its characters; Daredevil (played by Charlie Cox) was blinded by a radioactive substance, and Professor X of the X-Men franchise uses a wheelchair. Eternals also featured the MCU's first deaf superhero, Lauren Ridloff. Echo is the first story to focus on a deaf indigenous American lead character - Maya Lopez, who is played by Alaqua Cox.

This is what you need to know about Echo, the new Marvel instalment that's receiving high praise from critics, plus everything you need to know about the show's plot, cast and where you can watch it.

The response to Echo on Disney+

Critics have praised Echo for its ability to address both the character's disability and indigenous background authentically. As Ethan Anderton at Slashfilm explained: "It’s the links between Maya’s evolution as a character and her Choctaw ancestors that contain the richest story elements." While Dan Fienberg at The Hollywood Reporter said: "The effort it puts into making the character’s deafness, Indigenous heritage and prosthetic limb integral is impressive and entertaining at once."

The production team collaborated with the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, an indigenous American territory, to accurately reflect and represent the realities and cultural nuances. Echo's writer and director Sydney Freeland said (via Q) she wanted to focus on Echo's story 'because there's so little Native American representation, you kind of hear about every character [who's Native American],' before adding: "The response from the Choctaw Nation has been overwhelmingly positive".

Freeland said of working with a deaf actor portraying a deaf character, that while she found the experience initially 'terrifying' it was ultimately 'exhilarating'. She explained to Cinema Blend during a recent press conference: "I think for myself, it was terrifying initially and then exhilarating to find out how do we portray this? How do we go about with a lead character that doesn't speak, you know? And, I think the more we got into it, the more excited we got."

A post shared by Echo (@echomarvels)

A photo posted by on

There were additional considerations made to include the deaf community when filming. Freeland explained that while many TV shows use close-ups, Echo's shots were reframed to be more inclusive by also showing characters' hands for the use of American Sign Language (ASL). "ASL was something that was extremely important to everybody there and having the deaf perspective and experience represented," Freeland explained.

"I'm also not deaf. So, one of the things we all did, is we [our department] took ASL classes. For myself, it was important that I just had some basic language where I could talk to her and look her in the eye and say ‘that was nice, again’ or ‘more emotional’ - just some basic words for her."

As well as championing inclusivity, Echo has also been praised as signifying a new direction for the Marvel franchise, with Chase Hutchinson at Collinder explaining: "What’s fascinating is that Echo, while slow to start, is one of the more intriguing entries in the MCU in quite some time and could represent a potential new direction for Marvel." Dais Johnson at Inverse.com praised its nostalgic feel, writing: "Echo is the antidote to Marvel malaise. The series brings the franchise into a new future by calling back to a brutal, neck-snapping era of TV that makes Echo feel like it’s lifted straight from the early 2000s."

What is Echo's power in Marvel?

Echo tells the story of Maya Lopez, the adopted daughter of the Kingpin and a supporting character to Daredevil. After causing havoc in New York City, Maya (also known as Echo) travels back to her hometown of Tamaha, Oklahoma. In the comics, Echo's power is the ability to copy anyone's fighting style, from Captain America to the Black Widow. But show writer Sydney Freeland decided to switch this up for the films, telling Variety: "Her power in the comic books is that she can copy anything, any movement, any whatever. It’s kind of lame."

In the Disney+ show, Maya draws from the abilities of her ancestors in the Choctaw Tribe in order be become a supremely skilled fighter. She also draws upon her late mother's ability to heal others. Cassondra Feltus of Black Girl Nerds comments that the beauty of Echo's story is that her disabilities are a source of strength, writing of the show: "Alaqua Cox delivers another beautifully nuanced performance as Maya Lopez, a culturally rich, badass villain whose perceived disabilities are her superpowers."

Who stars in Echo?

Alaqua Fox stars as Maya Lopez, the central character in Echo. We were first introduced to the actor in Hawkeye, which marked the screen debut of Alaqua Cox. Echo is her second role ever. Alaqua said of the role (via Variety): "Maya is a mix of both a villain and an antihero; I’d like to be able to do different kinds of roles. I have been asked to be in a few, but most of them are always the bad guy roles, and I don’t want to be the bad guy all the time."

She also praised the production team for their approach to accommodating her needs due to her disability, explaining: "They were able to hire deaf people behind the camera who helped me out. I had an ASL consultant who was deaf on set, and he helped me with the translation of English into ASL of my lines. I told [Marvel] that I would like to be able to have one-on-one conversations with them, instead of going through an interpreter. And they actually made it happen."

Is there a trailer for Echo?

Yes, you can watch the trailer for Echo from Marvel Studios below.

How can I watch Echo?

All episodes of Echo are available to stream on Hulu and Disney+ now.

President of Disneyland Paris, she is now the Global Head of Hosting at Airbnb, having successfully steered the travel company through one of its most challenging crisis during the pandemic.

Penny Goldstone sat down with Catherine to discuss taking risks, owning your voice and finding the perfect balance while working from home.

How did you get where you are now?

I was raised in the UK and Hong Kong so travel, curiosity and an appreciation for global cultures shaped my path. After working across the Middle East, Europe and the U.K. with BBC Worldwide, I arrived at the Walt Disney Company, where I spent 15 years in a number of roles, most recently leading a 120,000 cast members who created magical memories for park visitors at Disneyland, Disney World and Disneyland Paris. After 15 years at Disney, I was drawn to Airbnb’s mission to create connection and belonging among people all over the world.

I joined Airbnb in January 2020 to run the company’s Experiences business - in- person activities that immerse guests in a host’s unique world, like making pasta with an Italian nonna in her home kitchen. Two months later, the pandemic shut down the world and we suspended those activities. Our Experience Hosts were suddenly without a way to earn income and I wondered if my job would even exist. We decided to hold listening sessions for our Hosts, and they made it clear they wanted to continue to connect with guests virtually. Within 14 working days, we began offering Online Experiences, like meditating with a Buddhist monk, over Zoom.

It was a difficult time for the entire travel industry, and we decided the best way for Airbnb to navigate the future was to go back to the company’s roots and focus on Hosts and great hosting. We created the role of Global Head of Hosting to oversee our entire global Host community, including both Stays and Experiences. I was honoured and excited when Brian asked me to step into the role. In the three years since, I’ve worked consistently on strengthening our relationship with existing Hosts, helping our Hosts adapt to the post-pandemic travel landscape and growing our Host community.

Have you ever faced any challenges being one of the few women bosses in the industry? And do you have any wisdom to impart for women facing similar journeys?

Get comfortable with vulnerability. Every professional move I’ve made has been a leap into something new and challenging.

I went from managing one line of business to managing eight when I became Disney’s Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand and most of my team knew a great deal more about their businesses than I did. When I became President of Disneyland Paris, I had never managed a theme park before. And when I joined Airbnb I had no background in technology.

Each time, I had to be willing to listen, acknowledge when I needed to learn and ask for help. Women, in particular, often feel we need to have an answer for everything to be taken seriously. The opposite is true. Being comfortable with vulnerability is a superpower. It takes courage to admit you need to learn. It takes courage to pursue something risky. I’ve found this courage has given me the confidence to try new things in my career.

I have often been one the few women leaders in the room. I encourage women at every level to recognize themselves as a leader. Own it. Embrace it. You can make important changes happen by voicing your unique, valuable perspective in professional conversations. Remind yourself you’re qualified, and people want your opinion. That is why you are in the room in the first place!

What does a typical day look like for you?

I get up at 7:00 a.m. and push our dog Ozzy, a huge half Pyrenees - half Saint Bernard, off the bed (I know! A terrible habit now unbreakable!). Even though I work from home, I put on professional clothes, which helps me distinguish between the time I’m “at work” and when I’m not.

I start the day with hot water with lemon. At 8:00 a.m. my husband brings me coffee. I am not a breakfast person but my favourite brunch or lunch is avocado toast, which I only really discovered while living in Australia.

I usually work remotely from my home in California or from an Airbnb listing if I am travelling and most of my day is spent in virtual meetings. Depending on the day, I may focus on our business in Europe or Latin America, review product priorities, or meet with the team at Airbnb.org, our independent non-profit. I still hold virtual listening sessions with Hosts every week to gather suggestions and feedback and when I travel, I meet with Hosts for in-person sessions. I try to use my walking treadmill throughout the day to stay active. I was an early adopter of the treadmill desk and now most of my team are on one - we get very competitive on the step count! If possible, I will squeeze in a few breaks to step outside and say hello to Ozzy (and my husband).

After a full day, around 7:00 p.m., I eat dinner with my husband. He learned to cook during the pandemic which is great as I have no time to cook in the week. The only downside is his repertoire is pretty limited - but I’m not allowed to complain! After dinner, I catch up on emails or I may have calls with our team in Asia before signing off from work for the night.

In your tenure you've navigated the pandemic and achieved the highest number of listings Airbnb has ever had. How did you make that happen?

My team and I relentlessly focus on our 4+ million Hosts. We’ve created a number of channels to increase our partnership and communication, including a Host Advisory Board, and supporting local Host clubs on Facebook. We hold Host workshops once or twice a week, listening to their requests, suggestions and concerns. We don’t just listen - we put that feedback into action. It informs our company priorities, product development and policies. Happy Hosts make happy guests. When both groups feel safe, supported and satisfied, the entire Airbnb community benefits.

I recently became a first-time Airbnb Host. We booted out our eldest son and listed our guesthouse on Airbnb. (Not to worry. My son is 27 and already had a place to live.) Becoming a Host immediately deepened my appreciation for the effort our Hosts put in to offer great hospitality and my understanding of Host concerns about managing guest expectations and reviews. For example, I send messages to guests so they understand the drive to our home is a steep, windy road and 20 minutes from the nearest coffee, but the stunning views of the valley in the evening are well worth it!

My husband is my co-host and we’re having fun welcoming guests and introducing them to the Santa Monica mountains. And I’m proud to say we have received incredible reviews!

What are your next goals for Airbnb? Are there any challenges you face (e.g. the cost of living crisis)?

We want hosting on Airbnb to be as popular and easy as staying on Airbnb. We have simplified the process of becoming a Host and added new support. In November, we introduced Airbnb Setup, a simplified sign up process that includes a mentorship program that pairs new Hosts with experienced Superhosts. New Hosts receive free one-to-one guidance during signup all the way through to their first reservation.

In the current cost of living crisis, we also want to raise awareness about hosting as a path to meaningful income. Airbnb’s founding story goes back to the Great Recession in 2008, when our founders rented out three airbeds in their San Francisco apartment to cover their rent. Airbnb is helping Hosts pay their bills, with the typical host in the UK earning over £6,000 last year - approximately two months of pay for the median UK household. Women are a vibrant part of our Host community - nearly two-thirds of our Hosts in the UK are women. I’d love to see more women turn to hosting. It offers flexibility many women seek.

Another way we’re helping our Hosts address rising costs is through our energy- efficiency programs. We launched our first programmes in the UK and France last year and we’re expanding to other countries this year. These programmes help Hosts understand how to make their homes more energy efficient, thus save money on their energy costs and reduce their carbon footprint.

What trends can we look out for in the next couple of years?

The pandemic made all of us realise the importance of connecting with our family and friends. We believe travel on Airbnb is helping people meet that need. Globally, family travel on our platform is up 60 percent in 2022 compared to before the pandemic in 2019 - and in the UK, it’s up over 50 percent.

Guests have become more flexible with when and where they were travelling, in part, thanks to remote work. Since the start of the pandemic, more than 10,000 cities and towns received their first Airbnb booking. To inspire guests and help them to discover new destinations, we introduced Airbnb Categories last year. Rather than look for a specific (often familiar) location and date, you can search based on what inspires you - like homes with amazing pools or near national parks. One Category dear to my heart is Adapted, which features 1,000+ homes adapted for wheelchair access, with verified step-free paths into the home, bedroom and bathroom. I also love our Historic Homes category which features around 45,000 heritage properties like castles and manors throughout Europe.

How do you unwind from work? Is it tricky to get that work/life balance right?

There are seasons in life where a true work-life balance is difficult to achieve. We make choices to suit specific times in our lives and it can feel like you’re sacrificing your career or your personal life. When my children were young, I chose to work part-time. I did worry about missing out at work but felt it was important to be with my kids at that age. Whatever you decide - try not to second-guess yourself. Be confident in your choices and make the most of them.

In this chapter of my life, I love living on the top of a mountain, relaxing with incredible sunsets in the evening and enjoying the flexibility of remote work. Airbnb has a flexible work policy, allowing me to work remotely and visit my parents in the U.K. or my son at college without having to take “time off” to do so.

To unwind, I take very hot yoga or barre classes, hike in California’s Santa Monica mountains with my husband and dog and watch a good television program. (I spent much of my early career persuading other people to buy television shows.) One of my favourite recent shows was Slow Horses.

Here’s what Belle, Elsa and Jasmine have in common

While we were busy watching Princess Jasmine, Belle, Cinderella and Ariel nab their Prince Charming, Frozen’s Elsa rule an icy kingdom and Alice climb out of that rabbit hole, we missed one important fact.

All our favourite heroines predominantly wear blue: Alice’s powder blue day dress, Elsa’s embellished cape, Jasmine’s turquoise harem pants and crop top… and it turns out there’s a very specific reason behind it.

Speaking to Allure, Leatrice Eiseman of the Pantone Colour Institute says it’s all about empowering females, ‘You’re adding a bit of power to the character by giving her the blue.’

‘It's a very subtle way of saying, ‘“Yeah, but young women, young girls, can be empowered, too”,’ she adds.

And now she mentions it, we totally see it. Belle’s work dress leads her to new adventures beyond her small village, Jasmine’s outfit helps her escape her gilded cage, and Cinderella’s gown transforms her life for the better.

That should put paid to the whole ‘blue is for boys and pink is for girls’ debate!

But there’s another reason Disney princesses - and other film characters - wear blue: it’s a positive colour, because it reminds us of the sky.

Beatrice says, ’It’s dependable. It's reliable. It might cloud up, but we know it’s there.’
