Leighton Meester is one of the most talked-about women in the world. And from her season two role in Nobody Wants This to her sweet relationship with Adam Brody, the Gossip Girl star never fails to make headlines.

This week, Meester was particularly front and centre, appearing on Penn Badgley's popular 'Podcrushed' podcast. And during the conversation, the 39-year-old broke her silence on her viral red carpet exchange with Ariana Grande.

The two A-list women went viral for a shared moment at the Critics Choice Awards in January, where their red carpet exchange became an internet moment.

The footage shows Grande telling Meester "I love you so much! Wow, wow, wow," as she walks past her, before Meester can be seen repeating the statement to the woman next to her, and laughing.

Lip readers and online detectives weighed in on the moment at the time, with some social media users criticising Meester for her "mocking" response.

And while the Gossip Girl star has previously remained quiet about the situation, she opened up about the viral exchange this week, explaining that she had misheard, mistaking Grande's comment for a joke about her crying.

Meester explained that she had felt very "raw and emotional" at the 2025 Critics Choice Awards, the year before, crying during the ceremony.

"But like a few weeks ago, I was going to the same award show, and I was like: ‘Oh my god, remember when I cried last time?’" she recalled. "Tears were coming out. And then I walked by Ariana Grande on the red carpet, and if you just walk by her, you’re on the internet. And she said something I couldn’t hear.

"I was with my publicist, Kate," she continued. "So [Grande] was walking by, and she said something to me. And then Kate turns around, and we both heard: ‘Hi, I love you, wah, wah, wah!’ I couldn’t hear - she was walking away."

Believing Grande's comment to be a joke about her crying, Meester continued: "I was like: ‘Oh, she’s kind of a comedy queen, she’s just being funny.’ I thought that was something she would do, and I was like, ‘Oh my god, that’s cute and funny.’

"Then it turned out she didn’t say that," she revealed. "And then I saw her the next week, and I was like: ‘I have to tell you, like, I thought…’ and she’s like, ‘You thought I said wah, wah, wah? That’s so funny!’ And I was like, ‘No, it’s an old person not being able to hear!’ That’s so embarrassing."

Well, this is hilarious.

Magpies rejoice, award season is officially here, and ringing in the festivities is none other than The Critics' Choice Awards 2026— a quieter affair, yet no less exciting than the Oscars or Golden Globes.

Held in Santa Monica, California, the evening saw plenty of exciting big wins, from All Her Fault's Sarah Snook, to Adolescence's Erin Doherty, and lest we forget Timothee Chalamet, plus his sweet nod to girlfriend Kylie Jenner.

The Critics Choice Awards 2026 kicked off awards season last night, with the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica positively packed with the biggest names in film and TV. While the red carpet was a hit online (ahem, looking at you, Megan Stalter and Paul W. Downs), the brilliant acceptance speeches have already set the tone for what we can expect during the 2026 run of awards ceremonies.

Picking up the Best Actor award for his role in Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet made an unexpected declaration of love to Kylie Jenner, while All Her Fault star Sarah Snook admitted she wasn't expecting to win, and charmed the audience with her improvised thank yous. But it was Hamnet star Jessie Buckley who really made waves with her poetic adoration of co-star, Paul Mescal. Upon receiving the award for Best Actress, Jessie thanked those she worked with, including Hamnet's director Chloé Zhao. Then, she turned to Paul and stated, with a laugh, that she "could drink [him] like water", and his adorably awkward response is going viral.

During her acceptance speech, Jessie started by thanking Chloé Zhao, sharing: "You have reminded me of the power of telling a story and the journey that you can go on to touch the deepest parts of what it is to be alive."

Then, addressing Paul directly, she left the Gladiator II star seriously blushing by saying: "Paul, I bloody love you, man. And I know loads of other women do in this room too, but tough shit... I could drink you like water, working with you every single day. You're a giant of the heart and thank you so much for making me a little more human."

When the cameras cut to Paul, viewers could see that he was visibly embarrassed by the compliments. While he smiled and squirmed nervously in his seat, fans absolutely loved this moment between the actors. On a TikTok video of the interaction, one person wrote: "She’s so real for this."

Another added: "Haha he is so damn adorable!!!"

A third wrote: "Aw he’s so shy."

Hamnet, starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, is based on the historical novel by Maggie O'Farrell which follows the life of William Shakespeare and his wife after the loss of their young son. Directed by Chloé Zhao and produced by Sam Mendes and Steven Spielberg, the film is expected to win big during the 2026 awards season with six Golden Globes nominations.

We're just five days into the new year, and awards season has already begun. Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner's relationship has made headlines in the last twelve months, with mounting speculation that the pair may have gone thier separate ways. However, during his acceptance speech at the Critics Choice Awards last night, the Marty Supreme actor made his feelings about Kylie very clear in a sweet and direct message, referring to her as his "partner of three years".

In what has quickly become one of the most viral acceptance speeches of the evening, Timothée picked up the Best Actor award for his role in Josh Safdie's sports drama, in which he plays ambitious pro table tennis player, Marty Mauser. Collecting his award, Timothée started by saying: "I got a lot of people to thank. I don’t know if I’ll be up here again, so give me a second... Damn, I’m more nervous than I thought I’d be."

After thanking his fellow nominees - including Michael B. Jordan who was nominated for Sinners, and Marty Supreme director Josh Safdie for "crafting a role and a story" for him - Timothée unexpectedly acknowledged his relationship with Kylie at the end of his acceptance speech, going on to share a sweet detail about how long they've actually been a couple. He continued: "And lastly, I’ll just say, thank you to my partner of three years. Thank you for our foundation. I couldn’t do this without you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you so much."

Kylie could then be seen on camera, smiling and clapping, mouthing "I love you" back to him. The moment came as a huge surprise to both viewers and fans, given that the celebrity couple has largely kept their relationship out of the spotlight. In a recent interview, the Dune actor explained why he won't talk about their love publicly, and despite a handful of joint red carpet appearances and sports games, Kylie and Timothée have chosen to keep their relationship out of public view.

But it was Timothée's admission that the pair have been in a relationship for three years that has seemingly struck fans. Although neither Kylie nor Timothée has previously confirmed exactly when they started dating, it was rumoured that they got together soon after meeting for the first time at Paris Fashion Week back in January 2023. A video clip of them together at at the Jean Paul Gaultier fashion show went viral at the time, and months later came the first few hints that they may be an item.

With the Golden Globes and Governors Awards behind us, the Critics' Choice Awards signifies the next big awards season moment—and the Critics' Choice Awards looks didn't disappoint. 

The big winners on the night included Emma Stone for Poor Things, as well as Elizabeth Debicki for her role in The Crown and America Ferrera, who gave a passionate speech receiving her SeeHer award, which is given to women in leading roles who advocate for gender equality and take on boundary-defying roles. 

While the Critic's Choice Awards doesn't quite have the same high-profile looks as the Golden Globes or the Oscars (the Oscars 2024 predictions are already in, FYI) that's not to say the A-List didn't come out in full force for the super glam Santa Monica event. These are our favourite looks, from Billie Elish's typically understated monochrome ensemble to Rosamund Pike's mermaid-esque glittering blue gown and Dua Lipa's dramatic ruffled red Prada dress.

The Crown's Elizabeth Debicki wore an incredible bejewelled jumpsuit to walk the red carpet, her blonde hair wore in loose waves with a subtle smokey eye to complete the killer look.

Brie Larson gave us a masterclass how to wear black on the red carpet, with a dress that fused velvet and sheer fabric and statement red nails. Full marks.

Carey Mulligan stunned in a dramatic Giorgio Armani Prive gown, featuring lapels with a deep plunge. Her short bob was tucked behind her ears—understated Hollywood glamour at its finest.

While it might not be to everyone's taste, Billie Eilish stayed true to her signature unique style in a Thom Browne ensemble that layered a black corset and long white shirt.

If Barbie wore a red dress on the red carpet, we imagine it would look just like this one by way of Balmain.

Last summer, Barbie fever well and truly gripped the globe. Whether it was the nostalgic Barbiecore fashion,  Ryan Gosling's sublime improvised lines or the clever storytelling, it was a huge hit and broke a number of records, going on to become the highest-grossing film by a female director. 

But one of the most relatable scenes for many viewers was America Ferrera's passionate speech about the challenges of womanhood. Her character Gloria states 'it is literally impossible to be a woman', going to explain the expectations faced by women across the world, and it resonated with many.

At the Critics Choice Awards last night, America was awarded the SeeHer Award - an achievement honouring those who advocate for gender equality and portray characters who push boundaries - for her role in the Barbie movie. Her co-star Margot Robbie introduced her, saying: "She is an artist and an activist. She tells us the truth and asks us to reach for something more in the world and in our in ourselves. She deserves to be celebrated."

During her acceptance speech, America Ferrera discussed the importance of representation and shared her own experience of growing up wanting 'desperately... to be a part of a storytelling legacy that I could not see myself reflected in'.

She said: "Of course, I could feel myself in characters who were strong and complex. But these characters rarely, if ever, looked like me. I yearned to see people like myself on screen as full humans. When I started working over 20 years ago, it seemed impossible that anyone could make a career portraying fully dimensional Latina characters but because of writers, directors, producers and executives who are daring enough to rewrite outdated stories and to challenge deeply entrenched biases, I, and some of my beloved Latina colleagues, have been supremely blessed to bring to life some fierce and fantastic women."

She continued: "Because of that, we have had the chance to bring through some deeply layered Latina characters and characters that I could not have seen growing up. But now I can see her, and I see her expanding in the next generation of talent like my beloved Ariana Greenblatt, who plays my daughter in Barbie, and in Jenna Ortega and in Selena Gomez and in so many more out there."

America concluded by saying: "Black, brown, Indigenous, Asian, trans, disabled, any body type, any gender. We are all worthy of having our lives richly and authentically reflected."

Never underestimate the power of a hairpin

West Side Story star Rachel Zegler had a real pinch me moment at the Critics' Choice Awards recently, when both Lady Gaga and the Haim sisters helped her with a wardrobe malfunction. Zegler explained on Twitter her dress “broke” and the women swooped into action, armed with a hairpin.

Zegler, who plays Maria in the movie musical, wore a mint green Dior Couture gown on the evening which featured a braided cord halter detail and another cord along its open back. According to a report from Variety, Gaga embraced Zegler and said she was “obsessed” with the star – after which Gaga and Este Haim “fussed over a strap that appeared to be twisted at the back of Zegler’s dress.”

Zegler went into more detail on Twitter, writing, “my dress broke last night and lady gaga, este haim, and alana haim all banded together to temporarily fix it with a hairpin. and i think that’s beautiful.”

The actor also had an opportunity to tell Lady Gaga how much the singer meant to her, sharing a video on Instagram of the duo gushing over one another from a distance at the awards. Zegler accompanied the video with the caption, “i got to tell lady gaga that she is the reason i am alive today and honestly that’s all i have ever wanted.”

She added in an Instagram comment she has been a massive fan of the star for “over a decade,” saying, “[Lady Gaga} found the most incredible way to channel her painful experiences into incredible, cathartic art…it became my dream to do the same thing. lady gaga made me the actor i am without even knowing it.”

“i am so blessed that i got to tell her to her face. to hold her hand. to hug her. to smile and cry with her. my heart is full,” she finished.

The 27th Critics Choice Awards were held Sunday, where both Zegler and Gaga were nominated for Best Young Actor/Actress and Best Actress respectively. While neither won their category, Zegler’s co-star Ariana DeBose won Best Supporting Actor for her turn as Anita in the musical adaptation. 

Halle Berry's Critics Choice Awards speech touched the hearts of many, as she encouraged women to stand up and tell their stories, and be their authentic self.

The 55-year-old actor received the SeeHer award at the 2022 Critics Choice Awards, which took place at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday 13 March.

The award, which was received by Zendaya last year, recognises women who accurately portray women and girls in the media.

The Bruised director and actor received her gong with grace, and in her speech urged women to speak their truths "no matter how uncomfortable".

She said: "[Storytelling] can raise our consciousness and help us think outside of ourselves and our individual circumstances. I realised that we truly need to see each other's reality — no matter how uncomfortable it makes us — so that we can stop judging and stop pointing fingers, but rather find compassion and empathy for the others."

Addressing how the entertainment industry has shifted over the years, Halle said: "I've been in the business for 30 years, and I used to think that if I could play the part of a white man, then I was winning. But you know what, want to know why that didn't work? Because, if you didn't know, I'm not a white man.

"So, for those roles to work, they would have to be substantially changed. It would have to be written with the reality of my journey, in all of its beauty and all of its pain.

"This is why I am so grateful to be standing and living in this moment where women are standing up and we are telling our own stories."

Halle encouraged people to show their characters in their natural "complexities", and binaries within their personality, to be "honest and true" when storytelling.

She continued: "We will use our emotional intelligence and we will tell stories that don't fit preconceived notions. No, we will tell stories that see us fully in all our multitudes and contradictions. Because we are confident and we are scared. We are vulnerable and we are strong. ... We are everything and all of that and all at the same time.

"If we deny our complexities, then we deny our humanity. We won't always be pretty, and we will never be perfect, but what we will be is always honest and true — no matter how uncomfortable that makes you. These are the stories we have to fight to tell, and these are the stories that the world needs to see."

She concluded her heartfelt speech: "So, to every little girl who feels unseen and unheard, this is our way of saying to you: We love you and we see you, and you deserve every good thing in this world."

'She is and was a beautiful horse. Our souls and spirits were one.'

It was a night to remember at the Critics Choice awards. There were some worthy winners - The Favourite picked up the award for Best Acting Ensemble, and Crazy Rich Asians won Best Comedy.

One person who finally got recognition for her work in A Star Is Born was Lady Gaga, who missed out on an award at last week's Golden Globes. She picked up the Best Actress awards in a joint win with Glenn Close, and in her acceptance speech she teared up as she told the audience: 'I’m so honoured by this. I went to places in my mind and in my heart that I did not know existed…this is a tremendous honour.

'I feel recognised not just for my performance but for the inner work it took in the creation of this character.'

However, following her amazing achievement she found out that her horse, Arabella, was in a critical condition and she left the ceremony early to say her goodbyes.

She explained what had happened on Twitter, captioning her note: 'Goodbye, my angel.'

In the emotional online statement, she wrote: 'I am so honoured and blessed to have won both Best Song and Best Actress alongside Glenn Close this evening.

'My heart is exploding with pride. But it saddens me to say that just after the show I learned that my dear angel of a horse, Arabella, is dying. I am rushing to her now to say goodbye.

'Her name means ‘yield to a prayer’. She is and was a beautiful horse. Our souls and spirits were one. When she was in pain, so was I.

'I will never forget the moments we shared. Long hikes together, galloping through the canyons. Feeding her cookies.

'She will forever be a part of me. I am so very sad. But I wish for your pain to end, and the gates of heaven to open for you.

'I love you. Girl, where do you think you’re goin?'

Fans rushed to offer their condolences, with one writing: 'Gaga i’m so sorry, we’re here for you. she was so special. rip arabella.'

Another said: 'Thinking about you everything’s gonna be okay, stay strong gaga.'

Celebrity hangovers = a lot of effort

You'll know the feeling - you've had a big night, you're hungover, and all you need in your life is a large Dominos and Ru Paul's Drag Race reruns.

However, when you're a celebrity there's no way that you can stay curled up on the sofa in front of Netflix. There are things to do, people to see, places to be - like the Critics Choice awards.

And while Chrissy Teigen would have probably preferred to be at home in her sweat pants, she turned up at the ceremony looking fierce as ever despite her hangover.

On Saturday night, Chrissy was celebrating her husband, John Legend's, 40th birthday. It was a grand James Bond-themed affair, and guests included everyone from the Kardashians to Miguel. They clearly had a ball (have you seen the Instagram photos?) as they partied the night away.

A source at the party told E! News: 'The dance floor was packed with people all night. At one point, Chrissy got behind the DJ booth and thanked everyone for coming.

'Then they all sang Happy Birthday to John and he loved it. Everyone seemed to have amazing night.

Would have liked an invite, but okay.

Then Sunday rolled around and Chrissy had to put her sore head to one side and make her way into the dressing room to prepare for the Critics Choice awards.

Taking to Instagram, she shared her thoughts on the big event from the comfort of her bed as she struggled to get ready.

'Oh my God,' she said as she lay in bed alongside takeaway containers (babe).

'This is my bed and I have to get ready for Critics Choice. Wait, is it People's Choice? I seriously don't know.'

Later, once she was all glammed up and in the car on the way to the awards, she went back onto Instagram to tell followers: 'This was a huge mistake.'

We all know the feeling, hun.

‘There’s no such thing as “Just the wife”’

Last night saw the 24th Critics' Choice awards take place, with The Favourite and Roma emerging as the big wins of the 2019 ceremony.

But it wasn’t the films that got the world talking last night. Instead it was the speeches, with Claire Foy delivering the most powerful message of the night, taking home the prestigious #SeeHer award for her contribution to women in film.

The 34-year-old was recognised for her portrayal of ‘extraordinary women’, from Queen Elizabeth in The Crown to Janet Armstrong in First Man, by the #SeeHer movement, pushing for the ‘accurate portrayal’ of women and girls in film.

‘I thank the critics very much for this award and what it represents,’ the actress announced after being presented with the gong by past winner Viola Davis. ‘I’ve got to say that I’ve struggled quite a lot with the idea of me accepting it. Because I immediately thought I’ve offered nothing. And I have nothing to offer. It was something that Viola said in that clip actually which was the fact that the greatest privilege of your life is to be who you are.

‘And I realise that’s all I have to offer, is myself. And all I’ve ever tried to do with anything I’ve ever made and in the work I’ve been in is to hopefully make something which people recognise, that they recognise themselves on screen in some way, that they see a thought or feeling or an emotion or circumstance and they can see themselves.’

Speaking of her most recent role, playing the first man on the moon’s wife Janet Armstrong, Claire enthused about the woman behind the character.

‘She lived her life with such bravery and resilience and determination and love, and I can’t tell you how many times during the making of the movie and in the press tour the people said to me, well, that part is normally the part of just the wife,’ she explained. ‘And there’s no such thing as “Just the wife”.’

Bringing her speech to a close, she concluded: ‘I accept this award as an encouragement to myself to be brave enough to face and see myself, and by doing, hopefully, I can understand and see others, and ultimately I can help others to see themselves.’

Remember last week when the 'FIJI water girl' became the surprising star of the Golden Globes? She turned out to be a model and influencer who was really just smizing her way through the red carpet, and boy did her efforts pay off. Fiji water girl ended up in pictures alongside everyone from Richard Madden to Jamie Lee Curtis - although the latter was not very happy with her for it. Eek.

So what happened at last night's Critics Choice Awards? Who won big? Who made the most emotional speeches?

As Host Taye Diggs announced that the winner for best action movie was Mission Impossible - Fallout, the man could be seen smiling at the camera just behind him, creeping closer and closer towards the lens.

'What's up with the Joey's Burgers guy in the background?' one viewer tweeted.

'Wheres the #CriticsChoice award for the Joey's burger guy?' another added.

'What is going on with the Joey Burger dude??? He keeps running into every camera shot!'

Someone else was quick to point out the similarities between the pair, writing: 'That Joey’s Burger dude is trying to be the Fiji water girl.'

Is that a bad thing? The world loved her, and we're certain they'll love this dude, too.

Another fan wrote: 'The Joey’s Burgers joke isn’t working.'

Okay, maybe not then.

Who wore what and who scooped the night's biggest honours?

This weekend saw the great and the good of Hollywood bring their A-game to the Critics' Choice Awards 2016 which honour the year's best film-makers.

Held in Santa Monica this year, the ceremony played host to Hollywood's cinematic royalty with everyone from Amy Adams (nominated for Best Actress in Arrival) to Michelle Williams (nominated for Best Supporting Actress in Manchester by The Sea) took to the red carpet.

Often considered an early litmus test for who might get the nod at next year's Oscars, Natalie Portman picked up the Best Actress award for her performance in Jackie and showed us all how to nail pregnancy style in her stunning floral Alexander McQueen dress.

Several celebrities rocked the monochrome trend on the evening: Evan Rachel Wood was the definition of #suitgoals in a sharply-tailored Altuzarra tuxedo, whilst Michelle Williams wore a Louis Vuitton floral dress and Nicole Kidman looked nothing short of sensational in a cutaway black gown. Lisa Bonet (further) cemented her style icon status in a stunning animal print gown whilst La La Land's Emma Stone - La La Land scooped up no less than eight gongs on the night, by the way - wore an embellished, black Roland Mouret dress.

But it wasn't all monochromatic palettes on the red carpet: Busy Philips, Viola Davis, Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Mann all opted for a colour injection with bright jewel-toned gowns. Whilst, Jessica Biel - who arrived with husband Justin Timberlake - also deserves a special mention for her absolutely beautiful no-fuss, beachy hairdo that she teamed with her gown. A tonic to the more traditionally structured hairstyles of the night.

As for the men: Ryan Reynolds, Ryan Gosling and Rami Malek were all in attendance and looked super sharp in the process. We also particularly loved seeing Ryans Gosling and Reynolds hanging out backstage too - who have, incidentally, both welcomed their second daughters this year and oh, how we'd have loved to be a fly-on-the-wall to that conversation!

Jennifer Aniston We’re speechless. Our Jen... in a suit! We never thought we’d see the day that Jennifer ‘just-playing-it-safe’ Aniston would up the ante in a rouge Gucci tuxedo, wearing nothing underneath except for a string of delicate body chains. But here she is. If someone chopped off her head we could have thought this was Cara Delevingne, it’s that cool. Someone give her stylist a raise.

Angelina Jolie Where did all those curves come from? Angelina’s gone goddess, debuting new chocolate waves and an old Hollywood figure, enveloped one of Versace’s satin wrap dresses.

Keira Knightley Another style shocker – Keira’s not in Chanel. Instead she’s chosen a shirt-gown hybrid by one of the hottest new demi-couture labels, Delpozo, as she continues her maternity style crusade.

Jessica Chastain We’re never quite sure how we feel about Mandarin collars on the red carpet, but Jessica pulls off this oriental Antonio Berardi dress with scraped back hair and minimal jewellery. The clever slashed shoulder stops the look from being too costume.

Reese Witherspoon The magenta satin sash adds some much needed drama to Reese’s simple Lanvin look. We only wish the skirt was trousers, a la Emma Stone at the Globes.

Rosamund Pike Rosamund’s doing all-white again and we have to say we love this Valentino Couture number more than her look at the Golden Globes. The structured high neck top balances out the bridal fairytale skirt perfectly.

Marion Cotillard Marion wears the increasingly popular Dior Couture silhouette well, with slicked back hair and a statement lip colour.

Felicity Jones Felicity pairs her Dolce and Gabbana dress with Aldo shoes – way to work a high-low brand mix, girl. The semi-sheer overlay and fresh make-up, stop the whole thing from being too Wednesday Adams.

Awards season is officially underway, with those stylish A-listers stepping out for the second time in a week, this time for the highly anticipated Critics' Choice Awards, 2015.

Hitting the red carpet were the likes of Angelina Jolie (nominated for Best Director for war epic, Unbroken), Jennifer Aniston (up for Best Actress for her role in Cake), Reese Witherspoon (also nominated for Best Actress for Wild), and Brit beauty Felicity Jones (nominated for Best Actress in The Theory Of Everything), to name but a few.
