As an unabashed maximalist whose mantra has always been “more is more”, no one is as shocked as I am that lately, the looks that have been stopping me mid-scroll are more of the capsule wardrobe variety.

The capsule wardrobe flies in the face of maximalism—it’s the ultimate embodiment of less-is-more and a kind of offshoot of the minimalist movement, a trend I’ve always shied away from.

The basic idea is that a carefully curated edit of versatile, timeless pieces makes for endless outfit combinations without the clutter. Sure, I could understand the appeal of a wardrobe where everything works in harmony—neutral tones, classic cuts, and fabrics that stand the test of time—but I never thought it’d be something I’d buy into. Until now.

The reason: Laura Harrier, who has been executing the chicest monotone looks—and in Paris, a city packed to the rafters with chic minimalists and during Paris Fashion Week.

Maybe it’s the Christmas break, maybe it’s the fact that I never really recovered from four years of WFH, but I find myself more often than not on days that I have to go into the office staring helplessly at my wardrobe stuffed with frocks and all-manner of bejewelled accessories puzzling over what to wear.

Sure, she’s married to George, but more than that she’s a human rights advocate, barrister, and international law expert. I figure anyone who’s spent that much time at the UN knows a thing or two about a power suit.

If I believed in such a thing as too many black dresses, I (well, my husband) would say I have far too many of them. But, as it stands, I firmly believe there is no such thing.

The perfect white t-shirt

Over the years, I’ve bought into my fair share of impractical trends, including but not limited to wedged trainers, capes, and hipster jeans. So you can imagine my delight when the stars occasionally align and fashion meets function, as in the case of the cardigan, which – if you haven’t heard – is cool again.

Specifically, it was Miu Miu’s Autumn/Winter 2023 show that made me look at the humble grey cardi (in this case, a fine, discreetly logoed, cashmere knit) in a new light. It's time to ditch the sartorial rule book. Gone are the days when certain body types couldn't wear certain styles of jeans.

Betty Madden, VP Global Design at Lee explains: "With innovative fabric technology around stretch and recovery, women have much more opportunity to try a broader range of fits. This allows women of various body shapes to be more adventurous and find fits that help express their personal style. For example, flares used to be harder to wear if you aren’t tall, but we’re seeing women of all sizes and shapes wear and enjoy them. It’s more about personal expression and preference than ever before."

How can I prolong the life of my jeans?

Here at Marie Claire, I have already waxed lyrical about the benefits of a capsule wardrobe. Creating a concise edit of classic wardrobe staples that can all be mixed and matched is undoubtedly the perfect way to take the difficulty out of getting dressed in the morning. 

For most people, a capsule wardrobe is generally made up of neutral pieces—think black, white, beige and denim—and while those create timeless combinations that can be worn for years, it can sometimes feel a little plain. However, that is exactly where accessories come in.  

From jewellery to handbags and even makeup, adding a few extra touches to your outfit can make all the difference in elevating a classic look to statement status. Adding jewellery is the simplest way to add a little interest to your outfit. On days when I feel like my look needs some extra pizazz, I like to layer on a few necklaces, to create a mixed jewellery stack. A fun earring or statement brooch will have the same effect. 

2. Add a pop of colour

When investing in a capsule wardrobe, many people tend to keep the colour palette relatively minimal. After all, this is the best way to ensure all your items can be paired together. However, that doesn't mean you can't experiment with a pop of colour every now and then. My favourite way to do this is to go for a fun, statement handbag or a vibrant knit. 

3. A red lip can elevate almost any outfit

French women have been doing this for decades, but believe me when I say a red lip can make any plain outfit feel a little more glamorous. There is nothing chicer than styling a pair of straight leg denim, alongside a black blazer and finishing the look with a ruby red lip colour. It's ultimate in understated style.

A wardrobe where every piece fits flawlessly, and pulling together an outfit feels instinctive—not an exercise in frustration that sees you retreat to the same three tried-and-tested looks. So, what exactly is a capsule wardrobe? The foundation tee

"A classic T-shirt is the backbone of any wardrobe," says stylist Bee Newham. "I always suggest that my clients have a couple of different shapes and styles in their closets, depending on the look they are going for. A white cotton tee is great for everyday wear—tuck the front into a pair of loose denim, silk trousers or skirts, and add a statement belt and you are ready to go. While anyone who prefers darker tones will get great use out of a sleek black style."

The everyday dress

Repurposing your favourite summer dresses for the colder months or occasional evening drops in temperature is easier than you think. Style a polished slip under a cashmere jumper for an office-friendly look or opt for a classic LBD for the evening. Regardless of your choice, I guarantee these dresses look just as chic when worn alone as they do when styled as a skirt.

"Everyone is always looking for the perfect pair of jeans, and the most asked question I receive as a fashion stylist is ‘where should I buy my jeans from?’" says Newham. "They are a staple piece for a capsule wardrobe for good reason as they can be worn with pretty much anything and a well fitting pair will make you feel like you can take on the world. But don't be fooled into investing in the latest denim trend, instead opt for a style you feel most comfortable in, this will mean you actually want to wear them."

The chic shirt

For a more formal take on a trusty tee, turn your attention towards a shirt. Equal parts polished and practical and easy to style for a whole host of occasions, from office environments to breezy beaches. The key, however, to adding one to your capsule wardrobe collection is choosing a style that's both the right fit in fabric—loose linen shirts will give a more laidback look, while crisp cotton shirts offer a more formal feel, and silk shirts will provide a more statement style—and colour to co-ordinate with the rest of your closet.

The go-to skirt

Now, not everyone loves a skirt—I only have one bubble hem style in my own capsule wardrobe—but they can make your top selection look wildly different. A leather jacket paired with a plaid skirt is a whole other outfit from that same leather jacket look worn with jeans, for example—the key to a stellar capsule closet. And when it comes to versatility, three styles stick out as ones to consider: a balloon skirt—my personal pick—a silk skirt or this season's latest cult piece, a plaid midi skirt.

The cosy knit

"Knitwear is so important in a capsule wardrobe and fabric composition is key," shares Newham. "Look out for natural fibres like wool, cashmere and mohair. Whilst the initial cost might seem expensive, you will have these knitwear pieces for years in your wardrobe so long as you look after them properly. Make sure you wash everything as per the instructions and lie them flat to try. A fabric shaver like the one from Steamery is also brilliant for getting rid of any lint and bobbles that might occur when wearing."

The tasteful trousers

"Trousers are one of the most versatile items in any wardrobe," says Newham. "For a capsule closet I would recommend three pairs as a foundation: a black tailored trouser, a silk style, and more of a statement-making option. Each can be worn with your trusty tee or shirt and sandals in summer, or paired with a chunky knit and leather pointed boots in autumn."

The statement top

Now we've got the basics covered—a classic cotton tee and a chic shirt—the more adventurous fashion fans may want to start weaving in statement pieces to their capsule wardrobes. These are the pieces that will liven up a look when you're after something a little less 'everyday'. A silk blouse, embellished top, or a lace silk cami, for example, will elevate any one of your capsule wardrobe bottoms, proving your small selection needn't be only the essentials.

Formal footwear

While spring is the perfect time to wear classic ballet flats, when it comes to the evening a similar but slightly more elevated styles such as a mules, slingback kitten heels or strappy sandals are polished enough for the office and will carry you through to the evening with style.

When it comes to outerwear you really can't go wrong with a trusted trench coat. "I would first invest in a leather belt in a neutral colour, and then look at adding another in a different colour or print at a later date. As a fashion stylist, you would be surprised how many of my clients don’t even own a belt! Next, I would add in a triangle scarf—look for fabrics such as wool and cashmere for extra warmth. And then end on jewellery, it really is the finishing touch to any outfit."

With warmer days approaching, Newham recommends starting to look for timeless sandals. "Footwear is also a great place to have fun with your style," says Newham. "Every summer I buy one new pair of leather sandals—investing in a leather pair means they will not only last longer but can be pulled out season after season."

Deciding what to wear for work can feel like a slog at the best of times, but even more so during the winter, when the last thing you want to do in the morning is spend any more precious minutes than necessary outside the cosy confines of a warm bed. This is where the importance of a capsule wardrobe comes in; a curated collection of clothes that you know you can rely on, and which you can easily style into everyday outfits without too much thought.

Someone who has nailed this is fashion blogger and Wardrobe ICONS co-founder Laura Fantacci, whose style is the perfect mix of high and low fashion, and classic pieces with a twist. So we asked her how she streamlines her wardrobe, and how she keeps it organised.

Sort through your wardrobe every six months

Pick a time to actually de-clutter and systematically try to do it every season (I do mine in September for autumn/winter and in March for spring/summer). Then decide what you’re going to give another chance, and what’s not going to get another chance. But be quite ruthless the following year if you've given a second chance, because if you haven’t worn them there must be a reason behind it.

Be brutal and realistic

I put up a little foldable rail in my room, hang the clothes and go through every section and literately ask myself, 'have I worn this? Do I want to wear this? Do I love this? Does this do anything for me?' For my body shape, for my body shape, for my lifestyle because a lot of times in my case, I will pick up something that is beautiful, but it doesn’t fit my lifestyle anymore.

And I think women tend to hoard these things becausethey have a sentimental value, but the reality of my life these days is I can't wear heels everyday, I’ve got two kids, I’m running a business. So actually it’s the flat shoes that I should be keeping and I should be making more space for, as opposed to the beautiful heels I bought in the sample sale when I was 24. So asking yourself those four questions are really key.

Buy clothes you'll actually wear

At the moment my wardrobe is 90% summery and it's obviously an indication of how fond and keen I am of summer but it doesn’t reflect my real life. I live in the UK, so I need to buy more winter dresses. Have a think about where you live, what your lifestyle is, what clothes are going to make you feel and look great in your realistic life. Because the truth of the matter is that most of us are not going to a party every night, and you don’t need super dressy things, you need beautiful things that you want to wear everyday, that make you feel fantastic but with no effort.

Invest in some classic, good quality pieces

A top that feels a little bit special, whether it’s a peasant blouse with a bit of detail or embellishment, or something that feels effortless, but will instantly dress up a pair of jeans. Beautiful flat shoes, maybe with a feather slide, or it can be a pointy embellished little ballerina, and then potentially also some statement earrings - again you could be wearing a grey jumper and a pair of jeans but the moment you put a pair of beautiful dangly statement earrings it sort of instantly.

And then a luxe coat that feels expensive and looks the part, because you’re wearing it most of the year and you give a very first good first impression when you’re wearing something that doesn’t look cheap.

Organise your wardrobe by section

I have all my long dresses in one section so that if I wake up in the morning wanting to wear a maxi, I can go straight to that section. I’ve also got a section for my day dresses and dressy dresses and then everything else is divided categories: trousers that sit along with skirts, and a section for shelves with all of my knitwear and t-shirts and jeans because it’s the sort of thing that want to look at in one go.

And then I’ve got another section for blouses and shirts, they’re all hanging as I don’t fold those, and another section for coats and jackets. It means I can get ready super quickly in the morning.
