Nicola Coughlan has confirmed that she will play a reduced role in Bridgerton season five, announcing on Dish from Waitrose that she "won't be in it very much".
"I have it so good now ’cause I come in for a few days and I’m like, ‘Yay! How is everyone? I’ll see you in two months. Bye!'," admitted Coughlan, who stars in the series as Penelope Featherington. "They’re working super, super hard."

Bridgerton season five is officially in production, with filming for the Netflix show's highly-anticipated next instalment underway. And from predicted release dates to new cast additions, the high profile project has been going viral.

The Regency drama's fifth instalment will adapt When He Was Wicked, the sixth novel from Julia Quinn's collection, starring Hannah Dodd as Francesca Bridgerton and Masali Baduza as Michaela Stirling.

As always, the new season will also see the return of the wider ensemble cast, with Jonathan Bailey, Simone Ashley, Luke Thompson, Yerin Ha and Claudia Jessie among those returning as the Bridgerton family.

Also joining them will be Nicola Coughlan, the undoubted star of the series, playing Penelope Featherington, aka gossip columnist Lady Whistledown.

However, in a recent interview, Coughlan admitted that she will be playing a reduced role in season five, with the 39-year-old busy across multiple projects.

In 2026 alone, Coughlan has starred in The Magic Faraway Tree, GOAT and Big Mood season two, even hosting Saturday Night Live UK last week.

And during her appearance on Dish from Waitrose, she confirmed that she will subsequently be taking a step back in Bridgerton.

"Season five has started filming already, so I won’t be in it very much. But I'm always happy to come back," Coughlan told hosts Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett.

"I have it so good now ’cause I come in for a few days and I’m like, ‘Yay! How is everyone? I’ll see you in two months. Bye!'," she explained. "They’re working super, super hard and I’m just like coming back. It’s lovely."

Coughlan is not the only star to move into more of a background role, with Jonathan Bailey and Simone Ashley scaling back their screen time while remaining a constant in the Bridgerton universe.

"I think [Bailey] set a great example, of I guess for a better word, the loyalty to the show," Ashley explained recently during her appearance on The Louis Theroux Podcast.

"It is a show about family and returning home and returning to the family and I think a lot of people follow that suit," she continued. "I particularly learned a lot from that example. And now when we go back, there is that environment of coming home and feeling like we're part of a family.

"I can only comment on what me and Johnny have done," she added. "And that is, we just really make sure that our schedules can just make it work."

Bridgerton season 4 is very almost upon us. Bridgerton fans, rejoice! Not only do we have information on the release of season 4, but we now know that we're being blessed with two additional seasons of the show. In social media posts shared on Wednesday, Netflix confirmed that Bridgerton would return to our screens once again in 2026 (hurrah!), while adding that fans will also be looking forward to a season 5 and a season 6, too.

The official confirmation came from Lady Whistledown herself, as her letter reads: "Dearest Gentle Reader, rarely is this author granted the opportunity to share with you such information. It is with great please I can announce Bridgerton shall return for seasons 5 and 6. Do celebrate accordingly. And in the meantime, do prepare yourselves, for Bridgerton season 4 shall debut in 2026. It would seem this author is going to be quite busy. Yours Truly, Lady Whistledown."

Back in January, fans were given a sneak peak of Bridgerton season 4 by means of a teaser clip and table read photos starring Golda Rosheuvel, Luke Thompson and Yerin Ha. The storyline will focus on the love life of Benedict Bridgerton this time around, and will be based on the third novel from Julia Quinn's collection. And although we will have to wait until next year to see what unfolds, the news of an additional two seasons has thrilled viewers.

On the Instagram post, one person wrote: "AMAZING NEWS!!!!!!!! Now who is Season 5 and who is S6???"

Another added: "I’m gonna be 40 when this show ends... I’m 29."

But what can we expect from Bridgerton seasons 5 and 6? Well, if the show follows the same order as Quinn's books it would be assumed that Bridgerton season 5 would focus on Eloise. In To Sir Phillip, with Love, she begins writing letters to Sir Phillip Crane following the death of his wife, Marina.

It also means that if Bridgerton season 6 follows suit, we'll see Francesca's story play out on screen. In Quinn's book, When He Was Wicked, Francesca's husband John Stirling dies and his cousin Michael (a role which was gender-swapped to Michaela for the TV adaptation) takes on his title, Earl of Kilmartin. Will season 6 focus on the love story between Francesca and Michaela?

Creators have previously discussed the inclusion of queer love stories in Bridgerton, with show runner Jess Brownell telling TVLine last year that the series' writers 'talk about [Benedict Bridgerton] as being pansexual... the idea that for him, gender is not that important when he is finding attraction." She said: "While his throuple chapter with Tilley and Paul seems to have come to a close... we’re certainly not done exploring that part of his personality. As all queer people know, your queerness is always a part of you, no matter who you end up with."

Brownell also touched on Francesca's sexuality in an interview with Vanity Fair, explaining: "The first time I read When He Was Wicked, which is Francesca’s book, I really related to it as a queer woman. Her story is in some ways about feeling different. In Julia Quinn’s book, it really has more to do with her being introverted. But for many of us in the queer community, that sense of feeling different from a young age is part of our stories."

Brownell added: "I felt like there was already thematic richness in her book to mine for her story. In telling a queer Bridgerton story, I didn’t want to just drop a queer character in to check a box. I want to tell a story about the queer experience and let there be a richness to her story. And it feels like we’re able to do that with Francesca.”

It's the talk of the ton: Harry Potter actress Katie Leung is joining the cast of Bridgerton!

Katie, who played Cho Chang in the film series and was one of Harry's love interests, has been confirmed as portraying Lady Araminta Gun in the upcoming season 4 of the beloved Regency drama. That means that the Scottish actress will play one of the ton's meddling mamas, alongside the likes of Violet Bridgerton and Portia Featherington.

In the series, Araminta will be supervising the society debut of her two daughters—Rosamund Li (Michelle Mao) and Posy Li (Isabella Wei).

Araminta is an important character for season 4 because she also happens to be the employer of Benedict Bridgerton's love interest, Sophie Baek (who will be played by Yerin Ha).

Sophie is a maid who Benedict becomes enthralled with when she attends a society masquerade ball, according to E! News.

As for Katie Leung, since her Harry Potter days, she has had many roles on TV and as a voice actress for animation and video games, according to her iMDb page.

As you might have gleaned by now, season 4 of the show will centre around Benedict's love story with Sophie, which is based on Julia Quinn's An Offer From a Gentleman from the Bridgerton book series.

Though it's time for romance for Benedict, until now he has been known to experiment with his love life.

"It felt important for [Benedict Bridgerton] to explore the fullness of himself before he settles down," showrunner Jess Brownell previously explained.

"He is someone who has big appetites, and we wanted to see him living a big life before he goes into settle-down mode. I’m excited for where we’re going with him in season four. There are a lot of things I want to say about it, but I should probably wait."

Bridgerton returned to the small screen this summer after an unexpectedly long delay, and it was - by all accounts - a rollicking Regency treat. Not only has the show literally impacted the UK economy by injecting it with a £250 million boost, but season 3 had viewers glued to their chaise longue. With Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton in the lead roles this time around, fans finally saw Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton get hot and heavy (to a noughties Pitbull classic, no less) and they skipped down the aisle for their happily ever after.

Although Bridgerton season 3 was only released a few months ago, fans of the show are already calling for season 4. A number of interesting theories about the potential plot have been circulating online, and given that the series is based on the romance novels by Julia Quinn, many are expecting that the next storyline will follow on in the same order.

In response to the growing calls for Bridgerton season 4 clues, Netflix released a short video on Instagram this week announcing that Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) will be the next protagonist. Sharing snippets of the character, the streaming platform wrote: "Welcome to the marriage mart Mr. Bridgerton. Benedict’s story is coming next season."

The news has come as a huge shock to fans of Quinn's books, as it was largely assumed that Eloise would be next in line to fall in love. In the novels, it is her story that follows Colin's - but the show has already tweaked the chronology. Bridgerton season 1 was based on the first book of the series, The Duke and I, which followed Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, and season 2 stayed true to the order of the books, with the love story between Lord Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma as told in The Viscount Who Loved Me.

But the third season was based on the fourth book, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton, which featured the much-loved Polin relationship. As Benedict Bridgerton's story - told in the third book, An Offer From a Gentleman - was bypassed in the TV series, it is now being revisited for season 4, which means that Eloise might have to wait until season 5.

Fans have been quick to comment on the news, with one person writing: "SCREAMING CRYING THROWING UP."

Others are already concerned about how long they'll have to wait for Bridgerton season 4, with another adding: "Just please make haste with the next season! Don’t make us wait for ages in a melancholy existence!"

Bridgerton creators address speculation about queer love stories in season 4

Bridgerton season 4 has many exciting surprises in store for us, as you might imagine.

Firstly, if you've read the book series, you've probably already noticed that the character of Michael Stirling — Francesca Bridgerton's future husband — became Michaela Stirling in the season 3 finale, pointing to a future queer romance for the sixth Bridgerton sibling.

Then there was of course Benedict Bridgerton's throuple storyline with Lady Tilley Arnold and Paul Suarez.

Speaking to TVLine about Benedict, Bridgerton showrunner Jess Brownell said that the series' writers "talk about him as being pansexual [and] the idea that for him, gender is not that important when he is finding attraction."

She continued: "And while his throuple chapter with Tilley and Paul seems to have come to a close at the end of the season, we’re certainly not done exploring that part of his personality. As all queer people know, your queerness is always a part of you, no matter who you end up with."

In the interview, Jess also addressed the matter of Eloise Bridgerton, who many viewers believe might be queer, and stressed that for the moment, they don't want to focus on romance for that character at all. "We felt it’s really important to hold space in this show where everyone is obsessed with romance for there to be a character — specifically a female character — for whom that is not the priority," Jess explained.

Part 2 of season 3 was released on 13 June, and unfortunately we'd advise not holding your breath for the next season. According to previous comments from the showrunner, we can probably expect the next season to land on Netflix in 2026, though there's no official release date for the moment.

Still, if Jess' comments are anything to go by, it'll be more than worth the wait.

Nicola Coughlan has shut a Bridgerton season 4 fan theory down in the space of one Instagram comment.

The actress — who plays Penelope Featherington, AKA Lady Whistledown, on the series — recently posted a slideshow of pictures from the set of season 3 on Instagram, in anticipation of part 2 being released later this month.

While there was a lot to see in the entire slideshow, it's the last picture that made fans lose their minds this time. It's a photo Nicola took of her costar Luke Newton (Colin Bridgerton) reading a script in a makeup trailer. Behind him is a mirror with a post-it marked "Sophie" on it.

Readers of the Bridgerton book series by Julia Quinn immediately picked up on this, because they've all been hoping for a while that a character named Sophie Beckett — who becomes Benedict Bridgerton's love interest in the books — will be introduced in the TV version ASAP, either towards the end of season 3, or in season 4.

But sadly, the very reasonable Nicola didn't want to get fans' hopes up, so when one person commented: "SOPHIE?!?" she quickly answered: "lolll no that’s @sophie.burton.33’s makeup station!!"

Obviously, we're giving massive props to Nic for not giving us false hopes, but still, we hope this doesn't mean Sophie is out of the picture entirely. Fingers crossed!

Season 3 revolves around Penelope and Colin's romance, and it's been absolutely lovely seeing Nicola and Luke's bond develop on and off-screen. Before you ask, no, they're not dating IRL, but they seem to be really close friends.

For example, Luke delighted fans this week when he shared a video of himself pranking Nic, by jumping up from under a chair in her makeup trailer as she walked in.

The actor called it "payback," as Nicola had previously pranked him by getting the show's crew to play music from Luke's former boy band while filming a scene instead of the song they were meant to dance to, as both of them recounted in an interview with People. That's classic.

Bridgerton season 3 landed on Netflix earlier this month, much to the delight of those who have waited two years for the Regency drama to return. Show creator Shonda Rhimes explained why there was such a delay when it came to the third instalment, but the gap in time hasn't put off longstanding fans of the show. In fact, the first four episodes - which star Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton as the season's protagonists - pulled in a staggering 25.3 million views in its first week, according to the latest figures.

Granted, Bridgerton season 3's success was somewhat expected given that it's one of the biggest shows on the streaming platform, and there are already whispers about what Bridgerton season 4 could be about. The third season, which tells Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton's love story, has been a huge hit - but there's one particularly important moment that many people missed on first viewing.

At the end of part one, Polin looks well and truly on. Colin confesses his feelings for Penelope, and the dramatic carriage scene is one that fans have eagerly been waiting for. As the pair finally take the leap from friends to lovers and seal it with a passionate kiss, it's overlaid with a very familiar song. Pitbull's iconic Give Me Everything might take you back to the sticky dancefloors of 2011, but with its Regency makeover it actually adds a very sweet hidden meaning to the whole scene.

The orchestral cover of Give Me Everything was a specific choice according to showrunner Jess Brownell, who told Variety: "I didn’t pick a lot of the songs, but I weirdly picked the Pitbull song. I never thought I would pick a Pitbull song for a sexy moment, but the build of it just works perfectly."

Adding that she feels it's a 'really sexy adaptation of the song', she said: "It's a tricky balance because you hope that people aren't taken out of the scene by going like, 'Wait a second, it’s Pitbull?!'"

However, the lyrics of the song are truly reflective of Colin and Penelope's relationship, and particularly Penelope's inner dialogue. The lines, 'I’ma make you feel so good, tonight / Cause we might not get tomorrow' are a nod to the pair's sudden and passionate chemistry, tinged with the feeling that if they don't cement their relationship now they may miss their chance.

In the book, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton, author Julia Quinn writes: "Tomorrow would be awful, knowing that he would find some other woman with whom to laugh and joke and even marry. But today…. Today was hers. And by God, she was going to make this a kiss to remember."

Well, that makes the surprising addition of the Pitbull classic even more perfect.

Bridgerton season 3 is finally here after a two year wait, and fans of the show have been thirsting over the third instalment of the Regency romance drama since its release on Netflix last week. This time around, viewers are gripped to Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton's unfolding love story as Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton take the reins - and while only four episodes of Bridgerton season 3 are currently available, the general consensus is that it's 'unbearably sexy'.

Of course, while Bridgerton fans have followed the characters' love stories for years now - think Daphne and Simon in season one, and Kate and Anthony in season two - the off-screen romances are also getting a fair bit of attention. With Bridgerton season 3's hotly anticipated release just a few weeks away, fans of the Netflix show have been patiently waiting for a full length official trailer - and, finally, it's here.

The show, which debuted on the streaming platform in 2020, has been a huge success. Bridgerton season one was famed for its steamy sex scenes and made the Duke's spoon a main character. Season two featured a messy love triangle and a cameo from Boris Johnson (well, according to some viewers). So who knows what to expect when Bridgerton season 3 lands on our screens on 16th May?

Just a couple of weeks ago, Netflix released a teaser trailer which offered a sneak peak into Kate Sharma and Anthony Bridgerton's storyline after their union at the end of season two. There are so many excellent Netflix shows returning to the small screen this year. Not only have we got our hopes up for more Emily In Paris at Christmas, we may also be getting another season of Squid Games and Black Mirror season 7 is reportedly already in production.

However, there has undoubtedly been the biggest buzz around the third season of Bridgerton. The latest instalment, which is due for release on 16th May, has been in the works for years and will follow the relationship of Penelope Featherington (played by Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton). The last time we saw the high society set was in early 2022, with the love triangle between Edwina, Kate and Anthony gripping viewers.

The series follows the stories of Julia Quinn's popular romance novels, and in a newly released teaser trailer for the upcoming third season fans are finally able to see what unfolds between Penelope and Colin. In the clip, viewers can see Penelope confronting the Bridgerton brother and asking why he is so adversed to dating her, as she tearily says: "Because I embarrass you, of course you would never court me."

Fans of the show will know that Penelope has had feelings for Colin since season one, but he has so far been completely oblivious to her crush. But in Bridgerton season 3, the pair may finally be on track to falling in love.

Ultimately, it is the moment when Colin starts to see her in a new, romantic light - and its inclusion in the show is important. The pair also revealed the names of the episode titles, which include Out of the Shadows and Forces of Nature.

Fans have also speculated that Theo Sharpe (played by Calam Lynch) will also be returning. The character was not a part of the original stories, and was created purely for the TV series adaptation, but viewers noticed that Calam had been tagged in a tweet about season 3 last last year.

Bridgerton season 3 first look as Nicola Coughlan releases steamy new pictures

Bridgerton fans, we finally have a date for season three! Netflix has confirmed that Bridgerton's third season will land in spring 2024. And like the sixth season of The Crown, it will drop in two parts. Part one of Bridgerton season three will arrive on Netflix on 16th May 2024 with part two following on 13th June 2024—almost a month after the first part of the new season.

And just to add to the excitement, Nicola Coughlan, who plays central character Penelope in the Netflix show, has shared some new (rather exciting) photographs of the cast in action on Instagram.

The first image shows enjoying some champagne, while the second confirms that we'll be seeing some familiar faces from series two return next year. The third shows a steamy scene between Lord Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma (who are played by Jonathan Bailey and Sex Education star Simone Ashley)—the central love story of the previous season. It's good to know these two are still going strong!

Fans were quick to show their excitement over the new images, with one writing: “I’m beyond ready for this,” while another declared: “I’m exploding with anxiety.”

Colin and Penelope (already affectionately named 'Polin') are set to be at the centre of the plot of season three, so we'll be expecting to see a lot more pictures of the pair in action as the new season gets closer.

Nicola also shared another post over the Christmas break, hinting at what's to come for Penelope in season three of Bridgerton. Sharing a poster from the show which shows Penelope looking into an ornate hand mirror with the words alongside 'Even a wallflower can bloom', Nicola wrote: 'Merry Christmas from this soon to be Former Wallflower.' Looks like Penelope is about to have her moment—and we couldn't be more here for it.

When will Bridgerton season three air?

Netflix's official Twitter page recently announced the date of the new season with the caption: "Rejoice in this most thrilling news. Bridgerton Season 3 shall debut in two parts: Part 1 on 16 May and Part 2 on 13 June."

The clips show some of the Ton's most famous faces asking after the Bridgerton family, with interest around the identity of the show's secret narrator at an all-time high.

Needless to say, the news has caused quite a commotion on social, with Bridgerton fans showing their enthusiasm for the new season. One wrote: "YES MA'AM WE'RE READY FOR THIS," while another said, "POLIN SEASON IS COMING". But not everyone was thrilled with the news, with another follower writing: 'I don’t know who told Netflix two parting was a good idea. Does anyone actually like it?'

Bridgerton fans have been eagerly awaiting the news of a season three release date since filming started in July 2022. Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington in the Netflix show, previously told viewers that we wouldn't have to wait too long for the next instalment of everyone's favourite Regency-style romance, telling Virgin Media Television's The Six O'clock Show that it's 'closer than it's ever been'.

Adjoa Andoh, who plays Lady Danbury in the Netflix show, also revealed in an interview with Hello! in October that while we're having to wait a little longer for the new season when it finally arrives audiences will be "very satisfied". She told the publication: "It's very gratifying because we've held our breath for a long time. Because of the way the year's panned out and that the season's going to come out next year, the anticipation is going to grow and grow. I think people will feel very satisfied."

Each season of Bridgerton focuses on a central love story and for the third instalment, we'll see fan-favourite Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton) take centre stage.

In series two, we see Penelope give up on her long-standing hope of a romance with Colin after she overhears him telling a group of fellow high society men that he 'would never dream of courting Penelope Featherington'. Ouch.

But after Colin returns a new man after a summer travelling, the situation takes an unexpected turn as Colin grapples with his true feelings for her. But Penelope now has other things on her mind, including trying to keep her identity as Lady Whistledown under wraps. It's very much giving us some Pride and Prejudice dynamics.

Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope in the series, explained (via Tundum): "I actually felt like it was a very important part of their story as a unit. Because she really had him on such an insane pedestal. She thinks he’s infallible. He’s not. It was very important for him to have this fall from grace with her so that then she can finally see herself [in comparison] as just a worthy human in general."

In an interview earlier this year, Luke teased audiences (via The Sun): “I feel like if you see Penelope fawning over this boy for another season, you’ll be like, ‘Get it together! Come on, move on and get over it’ … I think people are going to be really obsessed. I think book fans are going to be happy.”

Simone Ashley, who played the lead in Bridgerton's second season as Kate Sharma alongside Jonathan Bailey (who plays Anthony Bridgerton) revealed to E! News that the next chapter will 'get super steamy' before adding that it is 'condensation central'.

While Penelope and Colin's relationship is the central romance of series three, we'll still see how Kate and Anthony progress, with Simone continuing: "I'm very happy when I'm reading the scripts. When I receive them, I've got a beaming smile on my face."

While the full Bridgerton series three trailer hasn't landed just yet, we're sure it's only a matter of time.

Will there be a fourth season of Bridgerton?

Bridgerton's season three release date isn't the only good news we've got to share with you - there will also be a fourth season of Bridgerton, too. Back in April 2021, Netflix confirmed (via Lady Whistledown, of course) in a statement that there are two more seasons on the horizon.

The statement read: "Esteemed members of the Ton, it seems we have a rather special announcement. Bridgerton shall return for seasons three and four. This author shall have to purchase more ink... Yours Truly, Lady Whistledown."

Rebel Royals: From the Crown to Bridgerton, meet TV's new regal stars

There’s something mesmerising about real-life royals; aristocrats who, despite countless public appearances, remain a mystery to those of us outside of the inner circle. Perhaps this inability to ever really know who the smiling princess and eloquent duke are behind closed doors is the reason we’re so collectively taken with TV shows that purport to depict royals’ lives behind the scenes.

To find out more, we sat down with four young actors from across three leading series that paint a fascinating picture of upper-class life – from The Crown’s fictionalised take on historical events, to Bridgerton’s escapist, bodice-ripper iteration of the Regency period, and Foundation’s royal journey into outer space.

Bridgerton has such a huge global following – what reactions have you had from fans?

“The fans have always been really lovely and I’m very grateful for that, especially as a lot of the fans of my character are young POC women, so it’s wonderful to meet them when I do get to meet them in person. It’s always interesting to me when people think I’m like Edwina [though]. In some ways, it’s a compliment because I was convincing enough for you to think that I’m like my character when I’m really not!”

Tell us a bit about how you became Edwina Sharma in Bridgerton.

“My agent got a request from the casting director for me to audition for Kate. And then after a while it became clear that I was just too young. Then I went on to be in another show. So I’m like, ‘Oh, well, you know, opportunity gone’. And then, in the middle of filming this other show, my agent comes back to me and says, ‘Hey, they would actually love you for Edwina. I was just like, ‘It feels like it’s meant to be; it feels like I’m meant to be in the show – what a wonderful second chance.’

Was there anything that helped you to step into the role?

“I really loved my first costume fitting because it doesn’t quite feel real until you’re in the outfit, right? It was this beautiful, bright white dress and it’s still one of my favourites.”

Have you learned any life lessons along the way?

“To be a successful actor – and I mean that from a mental-health perspective – you actually really need to focus on life outside of acting. That doesn’t mean you’re not working hard and you’re not focused towards your goals, but you need to live a rich life outside of your career to be able to do well in your job. I think that I’m still trying to figure out that balance. I also think that when you start to have people know who you are, they will impose opinions on you – both positive and negative – and you can’t buy into it either way. You can’t allow your head and your ego to get inflated, nor can you allow your spirit to be crushed. So, I say, don’t let the positive things get to you and don’t let the negative things get to you.”

What does rebellion look like to you?

“Oh, I’m probably not known for my rebellious nature – I’ve always been too scared to even take something from set! But I suppose what feels rebellious is doing roles that are not expected of me; being willing to take career risks, even if others don’t quite understand them. Also, no matter how big the opportunity, I won’t ever do a role that unfairly disparages or denigrates my community.”

What’s coming up next?

“I have two films that have been postponed because of the strike – hopefully they’ll come out in 2024. One of them is called How to Date Billy Walsh, for Prime Video, with Sebastian Croft and Tanner Buchanan, and the other one is called Fight or Flight, which is just a really fun action film with Josh Hartnett, from the makers of John Wick. That was fun because I really got to play a character that’s very different– it’s an action film, so I got to see stunts, and I never thought someone like me would ever get to play [a role] like that. I feel it’s a balance of feeling grateful, but also constantly like, ‘Why am I not doing enough? Am I doing OK?’

Playing Prince William in the Crown must be slightly surreal – how did you secure the role?

“It came through an open casting, which my agent sent me. I put in my first self-tape and I think the whole process lasted four or five months; I did about six or seven auditions. It was a long process, but a really rewarding one. Halfway through, I met Meg [Bellamy, who plays Kate Middleton] for the first time. It was very, very exciting; I was a big fan of the show anyway, so to work be a part of the show is very special.”

Did you tell anyone that you were going for it?

“When I initially went for the role, my friend – who had done a bunch of casting – I went to her and I said, ‘What do you think about this? I might go up for William.’ I had a picture of him when he was young and a picture of my headshot, and I was like, ‘You know, there’s a little bit of similarity,’ and she took my phone and said, ‘You’d be wasting their time and yours.’ That was quite intense. So I didn’t go up for it. And then the casting breakdown came through my agent, and I was like, ‘Oh, OK, well, it’s come through my agent now, so I suppose I should go up for it.' You can imagine how I laughed in that person’s face when I got my first recall. But, yeah, don’t trust your friends!”

What was your high point during filming?

“Getting to work with Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce and Dominic West, and just learning from them: how they work; how they are on set; the work that they do. I knew the show was going to be massive in terms of production – certain sets that we got to work on were built like private jets and I got to drive cars. But, fundamentally, it was the people I got to work with that was the biggest high point.”

How do you feel about the monarchy? Did your opinion influence how you approached the role?

“I didn’t really have a particular view, either way. I come from a family that’s fairly neutral on the subject, which I think was incredibly lucky because I didn’t have any intrinsic voice on what [the role] needed to be, or what the emotions needed to be.

Has [the show] affected the way I think of them now? I think you definitely have a level of empathy. I think you have to, in any acting, in any character that you play. Obviously you research – there’s lots and lots of research – so I probably have a bit more of an understanding than your average person.

Would you describe yourself as a rebel?

“I sort of rebelled against [putting] this pressure on myself to be entertaining, or to be engaging or fun to watch. You should never, when you’re acting, think about being entertaining or being funny or being charismatic because I don’t think real people think about that in their day-to-day life.

“With William, especially in the earlier episodes, I was really committed to the grief, and actually staying strong to be truthful to the pain. I guess that was more of an internalised rebellion. I was like, ‘ I’m not going to try to be anything. I’m just going be in pain; let that be the truth of the character, and just sit and be a 16-year-old kid who’s lost his mum, who doesn’t want to talk to people, who doesn’t want to be the centre of attention, who doesn’t want to have conversations with his family. I wanted to let the other characters work for it – ’cause when you’re in pain, you’re not a team player: you’re hard work to be around.

What projects have you got coming up?

“I’m currently in New York at the moment, doing press. So, I think just getting used to the places that I get to go and the people I get to talk to is enough, and also just savouring it because filming is such a whirlwind. I’m trying to smell the roses as much as possible and just enjoy it. If I was already working towards the next thing this would really pass me by and I really don’t want it to – I want to enjoy it as much as possible. .”

Let’s talk about playing Prince Harry in the Crown– how did you get the role?

“I was in my third year of film production, studying in Bournemouth with my friends. At the start of the academic year, my brother’s girlfriend sent this open casting call for Harry on our group chat and said, ‘Why don’t you have a go, you never know.’ I was extremely doubtful. One, I didn’t think I really looked like him – I know we’re both ginger, but, yeah. And also, I just thought this kind of thing doesn’t happen. I did end up giving it a go, on a whim, and I somehow wound up getting the role. We started filming a month later and the whole job has lasted about a year. So it changed things very quickly, and my mind was blown.”

Did you ever feel daunted by the enormity of it?

“Playing a person who’s so notorious was exciting and challenging. In some ways you have to zone that out, because it was very easy for it all to be quite overwhelming. To be involved in the series and be heavily featured in the final-ever episode is pretty crazy. I’m really proud.”

Were you a royalist before joining the show?

“Prior to The Crown, I didn’t really feel much about [the Royal family]. I probably had a very shallow idea of who they were. And it was probably quite good, in terms of approaching these people as characters, because there was less pressure for me to… not get it righ. The fact that I was neutral meant that I could be quite open. But from being in the show and thinking about the royal family a lot, I feel a lot of empathy, and I guess your job, in a way, is to identify with them.”

Any BTS anecdotes from filming scenes we can look out for?

“It was our first time ever on camera; our first time ever on the set of The Crown – me and Ed McVey were shooting in Lancaster House, which is the most royal of all locations, as it’s a five minute walk from Buckingham Palace, so you’re right in the thick of it. It’s actually an ex-royal palace, so they’ve spent time there, which is pretty crazy. But the scene is quite a heated moment between William and Harry, and there were about 60 supporting artists, including all of the main cast – Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce, Dominic West, etc. Everyone in the room was miming, apart from me and Ed. They do that so that when they come back to do sound, they add in the chatter of a room. So, it was completely silent apart from us having this conversation – like an audience with all the cast. I remember the director coming up to me and saying, ‘You know you’re not breathing?’ I had no idea. I hadn’t quite worked out breathing. I’ve now learned that you breathe in between sentences, but at the time I just thought, ‘I’ll just get it out in one’. So, yeah, that was very scary. They really threw us in the deep end. Now having seen the scene, it’s not awful. I thought it was gonna be terrible, but actually it kinda works."

What’s the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done?

“ When I was six – and this is OK to say because of how young I was – me and my best friend would go camping in Cornwall and we had a bit of kleptomania. There was this little shop on the camping grounds and we just started stealing. I don’t think we really understood [what we were doing] – we thought it was a game. We’d steal 20p sweets; it was purely the thrill of stealing that we loved. But then our brothers told on us, and our mums took us to the shop and we paid for everything. That’s the height of my rebellion.”

Any exciting projects on the horizon?

“I’m gonna make bread. You know, when John Lennon left the Beatles, I think he had a period of time where he was just making bread. I’m not comparing myself in any way to John Lennon of the Beatles but I'll do that for a while!”

Tell us a bit about how you got the role of Queen Sareth…

“My casting process for Foundation actually began in the summer of 2021, so as you can imagine, the world was still very much affected by Covid and my entire casting process was virtual. I had a Zoom call with our wonderful showrunner, David Goyer, who instilled so much confidence in me – it made me feel like he was really rooting for me throughout the entire casting process, which was just amazing. It all went well because I got the job.”

It sounds like the project was a really positive experience…

“Honestly, the whole process of making the second season of Foundation was a high point in my life. I had the best time. I think it’s because I’d been in lockdown – you know, everyone in the world had spent a year in isolation. So, to go from that to not only going back to work but working with loads of people who were around my age, we all became such great friends so quickly. We filmed in three different countries, so we got to travel with friends and have fun and really jump back out into the world after a very quiet, sad year for all of us. It was just a really joyous process; I had the best time making the show and I looked like a queen every single day. Wearing handmade silk gowns made me feel so special – I’ve never felt so glamorous.”

Did you take any inspiration from real-life monarchs when building your character?

“I personally love the history of the monarchy in the UK. I think it’s absolutely fascinating that we can track this family throughout time, and how different monarchs influenced different periods of time. I’m a bit of a history geek. I feel like, as a space queen, things were very different for Queen Sareth than they could ever be for any British royal. But perhaps that essence of having to keep things together and put on a brave face in public is the same. If I took anything from the real-life monarchy, it was the ability to project like everything is OK. And to understand that you are a symbol of something rather than an individual.”

Filming on location must have been fun. What did you get up to when you weren’t on set?

“For the second leg of shooting, we were working in Tenerife, and, as you can imagine, going to Tenerife in January was an absolute joy, and as soon as we got there I found out that you can go on a boat to try to see dolphins. So, I basically persuaded the majority of the cast who were out there to travel to the other side of the island to go dolphin and whale watching. We saw dolphins and whales and it was absolutely magical. We also had lots of dinners and dancing on the streets – we had a lot of fun.”

Have you got a rebellious streak?

“I think that the way I began my acting career is very rebellious. I decided to quit school at 17 years old and move to London to pursue acting. I was just in a situation where everything had fallen into place: I had an agent, I was modelling as a way to earn money, and I just felt like if the opportunity was there, I should take it. But it was absolutely crazy, and the most rebellious thing I have ever done – to go from being an A-star student to just quitting school. I don’t even have A levels, so I’m very lucky that this has all worked out in my favour.”

Are you working on anything new?

“ Due to the SAG strikes, it’s been a much quieter year for everyone in the industry, but I’ve still managed to do some really interesting bits, including a couple of short films, which I’m really excited about. I’m not sure what more I can say, so I will keep my lips sealed.”

Jonathan Bailey discusses the inclusion of LGBTQ+ storylines in Bridgerton season 3

Jonathan Bailey has discussed LGBTQ+ inclusion in Bridgerton as the show prepares to return to the small screen after almost two years. The British actor is one of the stand-out stars of the past year - and it looks like his career is going to reach dizzying new heights in 2024. Jonathan won our hearts as Anthony Bridgerton, the male lead in the hit Netflix show's second series, and with Bridgerton's third season's release date closer than you might think, it's only a matter of time before we'll see how Kate and Anthony have fared as a new couple.

But that's not all Jonathan has been up to. Starring alongside Matt Bomer in the LGBTQ+ series Fellow Travelers, he has received much acclaim for this boundary-breaking role. The actor is also working on the upcoming Wicked film adaptation, starring Hollywood heavyweights Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, which is set for a release next year.

Jonathan spoke to Bustle about inclusion and representation in Bridgerton, and how he has faith that upcoming storylines will ensure 'everyone’s gonna see themselves'. So far, the central romances in the first three seasons of the Shondaland show have depicted heterosexual couples.

"I’m always hopeful for inclusion in that way," he explained. "There’s so much that Bridgerton has achieved in storytelling, and there’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that with the brilliance of Shondaland, everyone’s gonna see themselves in the story at some point, I’m sure."

Jonathan also went on to say how much he's enjoyed taking part in the Netflix show, ahead of Bridgerton's third season, telling Bustle: "The thing that’s special is the overwhelming love that you feel. Every year, it’s a different lead character. So, tonally, it shifts. Even in the way that they market each series, you see the tonal colours, the passion, the different ways in which people can fall in love.

"The personal experience of suddenly being exposed on Netflix, it’s life-changing. [Being on the show] makes you feel the need to be stabilized in this industry, but it’s also the thing that gives you [stability]. So it’s a really lovely thing to be able to go away and to come back. We’re a tribe."

Bridgerton has taken the nation by storm ever since it first graced the small screen on Christmas Day in 2020.

After season one's huge success, the show returned for a second season in March 2022 and fans were just as gripped (despite the lack of steamy sex scenes).

The popular regency romance is known for its star studded cast, engaging storylines and fabulous costumes, and Nicola Coughlan - who plays Penelope Featherington - has teased that filming for the third instalment is underway.

From the 'scandalous' new storyline to the cast and release details, here's everything you need to know about Bridgerton season 3.

What is the storyline in Bridgerton season 3?

Bridgerton season 3 will be back with a bang, and while the finer details have been kept under wraps by crew and cast we have been given snippets to whet our appetites.

Nicola Coughlan has shared that the upcoming series will follow a similar structure to previous seasons - but this time, the plot will focus on the romance between Penelope and Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton).

Speaking at Tudum: A Global Fan Event event in 2022, the Derry Girls star said: "Polin stans, I see you! This season, Penelope returns to London determined to become a new woman with a new independence… We cannot wait to take you along for the carriage ride."

During the event, she also revealed the first page of the Bridgerton season 3 script with Lady Whistledown's narration reading: "Dearest gentle reader, we have been apart for far too long. At last, London’s smart set has made its return.

"And so too has this author. As the season begins, the question on everyone’s mind is, of course, which newly minted debutante will shine the brightest?"

It is also expected that fans will continue to follow Kate Sharma (played by Simone Ashley) and her relationship with Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey).

Speaking to Deadline, Simone said: "We're going to be back! Kate and Anthony are just getting started. We have the amazing Jess Brownell who is taking the lead as show runner in Season three.

"In Season two, there was a lot of push and pull between Kate and Anthony, there were complications with the family, and then they find each other towards the end. I think everything is just starting.

"I'd like to see Kate just let go a bit more and play more in season three and kind of swim in that circle of love together. I think they both deserve it."

Bridgerton season three release date

Bridgerton debuted in 2020 and over the last three years fans have watched (rewatched, and rewatched again) the first two seasons. While Nicola has teased the third season is being filmed, the official release date has not been confirmed - yet.

In fact, we have yet to lock eyes on an official trailer for the show, so we anticipate it may be a little while yet until season three airs.

There has been a rise in Bridgerton fans asking why Bridgerton season three is taking so long, and it seems that the delay may have been due to producer Shonda Rhimes being unsatisfied with some of the storylines.

It was previously reported by the Mail Online that the storyline turned 'very dark' which Rhimes was not happy about.

The insider said: "There are some elements that Shonda is just not happy with so wants to change them. Some of it got very dark."

Though we may not have an official release date, Netflix has confirmed we will be getting a third and fourth season of Bridgerton - much to our delight.

A letter penned by Lady Whistledown, which was shared on Bridgerton's official Twitter account, read: "Esteemed members of the Ton... It seems we have a rather special announcement. Bridgerton shall return for seasons three and four. This author shall have to purchase more ink. Yours Truly, Lady Whistledown."

But we will keep you updated as soon as we know an official release date for Bridgerton season three so you can clear your diaries to watch every episode.

Who is in the Bridgerton season 3 cast?

Bridgerton season three will see the return of some familiar faces, but it will also see us wave goodbye to beloved characters, too.

Phoebe Dynevor - who portrayed Daphne Bridgerton in the first two seasons of Bridgerton - has confirmed she will not reprise her role for a third season.

Speaking previously to Screen Rant at The Sundance Film Festival, she said: "Sadly not in season three. Potentially in the future. But season three, I'm just excited to watch as a viewer."

So does this mean season four she could return? Who knows...

Meanwhile, Regé-Jean Page hung up his tails after season one and did not appear in Bridgerton season two so he is not expected to return for season three.

Ruby Stokes, who played Francesca Bridgerton, is another actor who will not be returning to the Netflix period drama.

However, Jonathan Bailey is expected to return as Anthony Bridgerton alongside Simone Ashley as Kate Sharma, and Nicola Coughlan as Lady Penelope Featherington.

Luke Newton is set to return as Colin Bridgerton, while Hannah Dodd - who starred in seasons one and two - is set to take over from Ruby as Francesca Bridgerton.

Meanwhile, new cast member David Mumeni is reportedly set to have a regular role in season three. Though it has yet to be confirmed which character he will play, fans have speculated David may be the new bachelor Lord Samadani.

Is there a Bridgerton season three trailer?

Unfortunately not yet.

With speculation circulating over filming for Bridgerton season 3 being halted, it is unknown when a trailer for the upcoming season will be released.

But, Nicola did tease that it was being filmed in a mini trailer of her own...

Where can I watch Bridgerton?

If you are a fan of Bridgerton and want to fill that void by rewatching seasons one and two (we don't blame you), you can do so on Netflix.

However, if you are ready and waiting for season three and four, you can expect them to air on Netflix also.

Will Bridgerton season 3 follow the books?

Bridgerton is based on the Julia Quinn's book series of the same name.

The first instalment was centred around The Duke and I - though with some changes - while the second followed a similar trajectory to The Viscount Who Loved Me.

However, Bridgerton creators have not followed the order of Julia's books as season three is based on the fourth book in the series titled Romancing Mr Bridgerton, instead of the third text, An Offer From A Gentleman.

Speaking previously to Entertainment Tonight, Shonda Rhimes said: "We're not necessarily going in order—but we are going to be seeing each one of the siblings and their stories."

Bridgerton's prequel Queen Charlotte hit Netflix this weekend, inspiring a new wave of Regency fashion, Bridgerton-inspired baby names and excitement for the third instalment - expected for release early next year.

Season two saw a noticeable lack of racy romps this time around, but whether it's the fact that the beauty looks were created using this one make-up brand or the bizarre prop that they use during sex scenes the period drama remains a fan favourite.

The second season might have forgone its signature steaminess in favour of more Mr Darcy moments (you know the one we're talking about), but there were plenty of significant moments that fans are still analysing - including one particularly symbolic few seconds during the wedding.

Edwina and Kate Sharma, sisters of the Bridgerton universe, are the stars of the series and become embroiled in a big of a love tangle with the one and only Anthony Bridgerton.

Although Anthony and Edwina are deemed a good match, his chemistry with Kate is undeniable. Despite his uncertainty, he proposes to Edwina believing it to be the right thing to do.

However on their big day, Edwina realises that he is actually madly in love with her sister Kate when he returns her bracelet, and decides to call things off. Drama.

But eagle eyed viewers have noticed that there's a moment that represents this tricky situation during the wedding. Edwina's veil drapes along the floor between Kate and Anthony as they look into each others eyes.

Fans on Twitter obviously had a lot to say about it.

"The fact that Edwina’s veil is literally separating Kate and Anthony is poetic cinema at its finest," one wrote.

Another added: "It's all in the tiniest details."

Regé-Jean Page explains why he really left Bridgerton after just one season

Bridgerton fever well and truly gripped the nation when it first landed on Netflix in 2020, thanks to a stellar cast, incredible costumes and racy Recency romps.

When the second season hit the small screens last year, fans were just as hooked. While familiar faces returned to reprise their roles, including Phoebe Dynevor as Daphne Bridgerton and Nicola Coughlan as Penelope Featherington, the main cast was made up of new talent, with Simone Ashley as Kate Sharma and Charithra Chandran as her sister, Edwina.

However, there was a notable Duke of Hastings shaped hole in the series' return. Regé-Jean Page, who played the spoon-licking Simon Basset, left the show after the first season - much to viewers disappointment.

The actor has gone on to star in a number of projects since, from CBeebies Bedtime Stories to action thriller The Gray Man, and he has also been tipped as the next James Bond.

Now, Regé-Jean has revealed the real reason behind his decision to step away from the popular period drama after just one season.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, he explained: "I signed up to do a job and I did the job and then I did some other jobs. That's it. That's the story. I wish it was more glamorous than that.

"We finished the story. The temptation would be to roll with the distractions and go, 'Oh, well, the story went really well so we can kind of change this up and make some other stuff up, I guess.' That was never what we'd signed up to do."

He also touched on the speculation that he could take the reins from Daniel Craig to become the next 007 - but coyly played down the rumours.

"It's a conversation people are having, and it's terribly flattering that they're having it. I leave them to it," he added.

Bridgerton season 3 has been delayed over 'dark' storyline changes

If there has been a Bridgerton-shaped hole in your life ever since you binge-watched the last season, then you may be disappointed by this news.

Season three of the hit Netflix show, which follows the love lives of the elite during the Regency era, won't be hitting the streaming service anytime soon due to some last-minute changes to the script - and, you may or may not be surprised to know it's partly to do with the sex scenes.

The first seasons got viewers all hot under the collar thanks to some pretty raunchy scenes between the characters, with season two dialling down the steam-factor (much to some viewers disappointment) but both instalments kept the plots very fun and light.

However, according to a new report, the show's producer felt that some of the third season's sex scenes had become too 'dark' and certain scenes needed to be rewritten.

It's not the first time things have gone wrong on the set of the Netflix show - according to cast members one Bridgerton scene in was apparently 'cursed'. A moment where they were attending a ball had to be reshot 4 times - so much so that they renamed it the 'cursed ball'.

Talking about the delay of the third season, a source told the Daily Mail: "Filming has been delayed due to the screenwriter not being happy with the direction of it.

"We have been told that it needs the fun back so there are changes, which of course means delays. One thing is for sure though, the production team want to get it right for Bridgerton fans so they enjoy it as much as they have in the past."

They went on to say about the upcoming season: "There are some elements that Shonda is just not happy with so wants to change them. Some of it got very dark."

We don't know much about the third series just yet, but it is said to be based on the fourth book in Julia Quinn's series, titled Romancing Mister Bridgerton, instead of the third book. The storyline follows Penelope's friendship with Colin Bridgerton - which finally starts to develop into something different.

If you're a Bridgerton fan, chances are you binged the entire second season when it was released last month - and have likely watched it at all least once more because, you know, brilliant.

From the significance of this moment at Anthony and Edwina's wedding to the bizarre prop that's used during sex scenes, the world cannot get enough of the Netflix drama (even if the latest series was lacking the hot and heavy Regency romps of season one).

But something that we all seemed to miss the first time around was a cameo from none other than British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Well, apparently. Kind of.

One TikTok user has shared a clip from Bridgerton season two that has now gone viral thanks to an unlikely 'appearance' from the PM - and fans are absolutely loving it.

User @txharvey uploaded a snippet from a scene where fans can see Kate Sharma, played by Simone Ashley, laying in bed unable to nod off and looking up at the decorated ceiling. It's here that the video pauses on a painted topless male who, admittedly, does resemble Boris Johnson.

Fans seem to think so too, and the video has garnered over a million views and over 145k likes since it was shared.

Season 2 has arrived

The long-anticipated wait for Bridgerton season two to arrive is over, and we have some behind the scenes insight you won't want to miss.

Ruby Barker burst onto our screens in 2020 as Marina Thompson in Netflix's cool millennial period drama, Bridgerton.

She has since gone from strength to strength, starring in critically acclaimed projects from How to Stop a Recurring Dream to Running with Lions, and this year working with Müllerlight as the voice of their new campaign.

MC Features Editor Jenny Proudfoot sat down with Ruby to find out more about the Müllerlight ambassadorship and to talk body confidence, Bridgerton and living in a real-life castle...

Mullerlight

Congratulations on the ambassadorship. What drew you to the collaboration?

I did some voicework for Müller and I had so much fun. I've been eating Müllers all my life and I'm not joking but it is a dream come true to say "Müller-licious". My dad is so proud of me - he is a big Müller Rice fan. And my friends can't believe it either - like, I have some serious Müller fan friends. They don't care about Bridgerton at all but they're like "Müller? Where's the yogurt? Give me the yogurt now". I've got a lot of people after Müller merch. I like the limited edition ones best myself and the dessert flavours are absolutely genius. The Müllerlight Tiramisu is a gamechanger for sure.

Did Müller's body positive messaging resonate with you?

Definitely, 100%. I was that girl growing up that would look in the mirror and would just compare myself and compare myself. Why am I like this? Why am I like that? Why don't I look like her? And it's not really my fault. I mean, look at the world that we've grown up in - and things are only just starting to change. We're starting to have a much more healthy relationship with food and with size, and we are finally moving in the right direction. It’s important because at the end of the day, if I had a little girl and she was looking in the mirror and feeling the way that I felt, that would break my heart.

What message do you want to promote?

I just want people to feel good about themselves because you cannot make any sort of positive action when you're in a negative headspace. That's when it's hard to get up and to be healthy - to go the gym, to go see your friends, to go for a walk, anything. I've been there - where you just want to hide from the world and cover yourself up, and I just don't want people to feel that way. If being honest and open about the issues that I've had and where I've come from and my journey helps people - if that brings people comfort and makes them feel less alone and that I'm on that journey with them, so be it. That's the best I can do.

It must have been a surreal experience becoming famous overnight and during a lockdown...

Yeah it was, but to be honest, I'm a little bit grateful that I was locked down for it. What if the world was open and the show came out and we were all getting accosted in the street? If we were unable to walk down the street or do anything normal, I think that would have been quite scary. But because of lockdown, the nature of that fame and that attention changed. The interactions were mostly online and you can always turn your phone off - you're in control and I'm grateful for that.

I suppose in a way lockdown eased you into fame nicely...

Yeah, and even more than that, I think we also need to think about the environmental benefits that we've had from this lockdown. Usually we're travelling back and forth to London, we're driving all over the place, we're spending a lot of money to get in a room with people when actually, why can't we do more virtual meetings? You can't film virtually, but there are castings you can do virtually, meetings you can do virtually and even award ceremonies that you can do virtually.

You've spoken previously about your great support network - did that help keep you grounded in your transition to fame?

I've got friends who keep me grounded and I keep myself grounded as well. I have a very good support network around me. The friends that I have, I've had for a very long time. They've known me since I was 14 and they all think it's really bizarre because they know me. They know what I'm like and they're just like, “What? Ruby from drama class has got all of this attention? Really?”

Did you have any idea how huge Bridgerton was going to be?

I definitely didn't know how huge Bridgerton would be, but I knew it was going to be popular because I had read the script. It was in front of me and I could see that this was going to be a hit, but I didn't necessarily know just how popular. I didn't know that people who had never even seen a period drama before were going to be tuning in. For a lot of people, this was their first experience of a period drama because something about the more traditional way of doing it didn't necessarily appeal to them.

How would you describe filming Bridgerton?

Oh it was really fun and just mad. Do you know, I would describe it as a sort of bonkers family road trip of pretty much every single stately home in the UK. That's what it was like. It was just lads on tour - let's go.

And speaking of living your best Bridgerton life, is it true that you live in castle?

I do, yeah. It’s a proper 19th century castle - built in 1846 - and set in its own grounds. It's not just me. The castle has been converted into apartments and a load of families live there. I live in one of the coach houses, so that's where the horses and the carriages used to go. We all share the grounds - the lawn, the woodland, the vegetable patch and we all have access to the roof. We call it the Happy Commune.And the kids are so cute. There are all these little kids - they’re literally real-life princes and princesses and they just run around the castle all day. It was really nice over Covid time, because we all just isolated there together and no one even knows it's there. Genuinely - when I get a taxi home, a lot of taxi drivers go, “I have worked in Leeds for twenty years and I never knew this was here”.

It sounds idyllic...

Oh yeah. We do gardening, we plant apple trees, we all play Badminton together. And you’re just surrounded by some really cool people. My favourite neighbour is like a walking BBC drama. She’s just this really strong cool lady - she's a barrister and she's a single mother and she's just badass.

You've previously spoken about not going to drama school...

I didn't go to drama school and you don't need to go to drama school. I didn't have the money to go and I was really inspired by actors who hadn't either. There are so many talented actors at the top of the game who never went to drama school - we're talking people like Jennifer Lawrence and Tom Cruise. There are loads of people who never went to drama school, especially in America, and I thought well they're doing alright. They never had to go to some school to be broken down and then built back up again into their idea of what you should be. They've managed to get into this industry and perfect their craft and actually thrive. And I thought, if J-Law can do it, so can I. Why not?

What advice would you give to someone starting out in the industry?

My advice would be that there is no formulaic way to get into this industry. If you don't get into drama school, fine. Adapt and think on your feet. If you don't get into National Youth Theatre, fine. Neither did I. You've got to adapt, you've got to think on your feet and you've got to do your research. You've got to be prepared to write lots of emails and put yourself out there but be professional. And just know your worth and know your potential. Some of your friends are going to think you've really lost it - they're going to think, "Billy's got this right pipe dream - it's embarrassing". Every single actor or anybody who's anybody that said they're going to do something which is outside the norm has experienced that. You are not alone. But just please believe in yourself and do what you love - you've got one life. It's as simple as that.

What can people expect from your incredible play, Running with Lions?

They can expect a hilariously beautiful, cathartic experience. It is so worth it. This play is what you need. It is going to feed your mind and it is going to feed your soul. That is the sort of stuff I live for creatively. It is so funny, the acting is incredible and one thing I want to point out as well is that this play talks about mental health. Now, I don't think anybody hasn't struggled with their mental health during this lockdown in particular. Mental health is right at the forefront of pretty much everybody's consciousness right now. And I think that this play will be really educational, helpful and ultimately supportive. We’re having the conversations that we should be having within this piece of theatre.

The theatre company is iconic...

This theatre company - Talawa - are the best black theatre group pushing black narratives in British theatrical history. They’re number one. So, if you want to support my community and what we do, please please please come and see this show. It would mean the world to all of us and I really think it's going to bring you joy as well.

What themes does the play touch on?

It touches upon mental health, grief, loss, love and ultimately hope. It explores mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, questioning ones faith, mental health within the community and how it affects a family dynamic. My character Imani wants to go and see the world - she lives with her grandparents because her mum Gloria has bipolar and has sadly been in and out of mental health hospitals for pretty much all of Imani's life. The play opens with Gloria coming back home.

Is there any dream role in theatre or on the screen that you would like to play one day?

I would love to play Cleopatra - if they'd have me. And I'd love to do a season with the RSC [Royal Shakespeare Company]. I mean, that's one of the reasons why I set out. When I was at school, our drama teacher - we used to call her Ducky - would take us to see Shakespeare plays. I saw the best Twelfth Night production at Hull Truck Theatre once - it was wild. Honestly, they were getting people down on stage to drink tequila, they had pizzas brought in and they gave us foam balls to throw at the actors. And instead of yellow stockings, Malvolio wore a golden shiny thong and ran around the auditorium like a mad man. What I loved so much about that production was the chaos - the madness and the lack of rules and stuffiness that you associate with the theatre. And that is what Shakespeare was all about.
