Billie Eilish is reflecting on being 'outed,' and her reaction to it, months after it all unfolded.

In her new interview with Rolling Stone, the singer-songwriter discussed her song Lunch in which she sings: "I could eat that girl for lunch / And she dances on my tongue / Tastes like she might bе the one."

Billie explained how writing this song helped her better understand her own sexuality.

"That song was actually part of what helped me become who I am, to be real," she revealed. "I wrote some of it before even doing anything with a girl, and then wrote the rest after. I’ve been in love with girls for my whole life, but I just didn’t understand — until, last year, I realized I wanted my face in a vagina. I was never planning on talking about my sexuality ever, in a million years. It’s really frustrating to me that it came up."

That last sentence was in reference to something she said in a Variety interview last November. At the time, she told the publication: "I've never really felt like I could relate to girls very well. I love them so much. I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real."

Many articles speculating about Billie's sexuality ensued, referencing the singer's attraction to women, but she didn't become publicly upset by it all until a Variety reporter asked her on the red carpet if she meant to come out in that interview.

"No I didn’t," she said at the time. "But I kind of thought, 'Wasn’t it obvious?' I didn’t realise people didn’t know. But I saw the article, and I was like, 'Oh I guess I came out today.' OK cool. It’s exciting to me because I guess people didn’t know, but it’s cool that they know. I am for the girls."

However, shortly after the red-carpet event, Billie posted on Instagram writing: "thanks variety for my award and for also outing me on a red carpet at 11 am instead of talking about anything else that matters i like boys and girls leave me alone about it please literally who cares stream 'what was i made for'"

In her most recent Rolling Stone interview, though, Billie said that she 'overreacted' at the time but that she felt 'pressured' into talking about it.

She said: "Who f***ing cares? The whole world suddenly decided who I was, and I didn’t get to say anything or control any of it. Nobody should be pressured into being one thing or the other, and I think that there’s a lot of wanting labels all over the place.

"Dude, I’ve known people that don’t know their sexuality, or feel comfortable with it, until they’re in their forties, fifties, sixties. It takes a while to find yourself, and I think it’s really unfair, the way that the internet bullies you into talking about who you are and what you are."

Over the course of her career, Billie Eilish has always been exceptionally candid - whether she's talking about her experience with negative body image or discussing the public response to comments about her sexuality. However, her frank quotes have often led to spiralling stories - and, it seems, her recent comments about sustainability are no different as she was accused of criticising Taylor Swift. 

Billie - who recently won her second Academy Award - made headlines last week when discussing the environmental impact of producing vinyl records. In an interview with Billboard for their sustainability issue, she explained that she believes it's 'wasteful' to release several vinyl versions of one album to increase sales.

Billie explained: "I can't even express to you how wasteful it is. It's some of the biggest artists in the world making f**king 40 different vinyl packages that have a different unique thing just to get you to keep buying more."

While the singer didn't target anyone specifically, and a number of artists follow this formula, the quotes angered Swifties who assumed that Billie was making a dig at Taylor Swift. The star is known for creating and releasing a number of iterations of her albums on vinyl, and according to a report by Forbes earlier this year she set a staggering record in 2023; she's reportedly responsible for 7% of all vinyl sales in the US. 

The comments fuelled a fan feud on TikTok, but Billie has since attempted to dampen the outrage on social media. On Instagram, she addressed the furore in her stories and posted a slide reading: "Okay so it would be so awesome if people would stop putting words into my mouth and actually read what I said in that Billboard article. I wasn’t singling anyone out, these are industry-wide systemic issues."

"And when it comes to variants, so many artists release them - including ME! Which I clearly state in the article. The climate crisis is now and it's about all of us being part of the problem and trying to do better sheesh."

In the article, Billie had noted that all musicians are 'going to do it because it's the only way to play the game', continuing: "It's just accentuating this already kind of messed up way of this industry working."

Last night saw the 2024 Grammy Awards, with the 66th annual ceremony airing live from Los Angeles.

The star-studded event saw major wins for SZA and Billie Eilish, not to mention knock-out performances by a host of A-listers, from Miley Cyrus performing Flowers, to a very special set from Joni Mitchell.

The most talked-about person of the night however was of course the woman of the moment, Taylor Swift, who took home the gong for 'best pop vocal album' for Midnights.

It was Swift's acceptance speech that made the most headlines, with the 34-year-old singer using her time on stage to announce some major news - the release of her next studio album.

Yes, this is not a drill. And it even has a name - The Tortured Poets Department, set for release on April 19.

“Okay, this is my 13th Grammy, which is my lucky number. I don’t know if I’ve ever told you that,” Taylor announced in her now-viral acceptance speech. “I want to say thank you to the members of the Recording Academy for voting this way, but I know that the way that the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion of the fans. So I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I have been keeping from you for the last two years, which is that my brand-new album comes out April 19th. It’s called ‘The Tortured Poets Department.’ I’m going to go and post the cover right now backstage. Thank you, I love you! Thank you!"

"All’s fair in love and poetry...," Swift captioned her Instagram post after her acceptance speech, featuring the black and white album cover. "New album THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. Out April 19."

Awards season is here, and from the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards to the upcoming BRIT awards, there are non-stop celebrations across the film, TV and music industries. 

It was the Grammy Awards that made headlines this week, with the 66th annual awards set to take place on Sunday, honouring the "best recordings, compositions and artists".

Billie Eilish wants everyone to stop focusing on her sexuality, asking "why can't we just exist?" The Bad Guy singer was questioned on the red carpet for the Variety Hitmakers event about whether she meant to 'come out' after she made a brief reference to her sexuality in a recent interview. 

In response to a reporter asking if it had been an intentional move, Billie responded: "No, I didn’t, but I kinda thought… wasn’t it obvious? I just didn’t realise people didn’t know."

Billie went on to say how she finds 'coming out' in general problematic. She added: "I just don’t really believe in it. Why can’t we just exist? I’ve been doing this for a long time and I just didn’t talk about… whoops. I saw all the articles [and] was like, 'Oh, I guess I came out today. Ok cool.' But it’s exciting to me because I guess people didn’t know, so it’s cool that they know. I am for the girls."

Fans of the singer on social media were quick to defend her, with one writing on X (formerly Twitter): "Let Billie Be Billie Folks!" While another commented: "I agree. Why is there such a need to formally come out? Who cares. Let her be."

The red-carpet moment followed an interview with Billie for the cover story of Variety’s Power of Women issue. Talking about her relationship with femininity and her feelings towards other women, Billie said: "I’ve never really felt like I could relate to girls very well. I love them so much. I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real."

The singer, who has previously said she's attracted to men and women, went on to say: "I have deep connections with women in my life, the friends in my life, the family in my life. I’m physically attracted to them. But I’m also so intimidated by them and their beauty and their presence."

While the conversation between Billie and the reporter asking about her sexuality looked friendly enough, it would appear on reflection that the singer was less than pleased with the response to the interview.

Billie wrote on Instagram: "Thanks Variety for my award and also outing me on a red carpet at 11am instead of talking to me about anything else that matters. I like boys and girls leave me alone about it please literally who cares."

The message in Billie's Instagram post resonated with fans and has already garnered over 3 million likes, with Billie's supporters commenting in their droves on the line of questioning. "Yeah can we just let queer people live pls," wrote one of Billie's followers. 

While another said: "I am so proud of you for how you handled this. God DAMN can people just let this girl LIVE!!!????" 

In the Variety interview, Billie also opened up about insecurities over her body image. She said: "I didn’t want people to have access to my body, even visually. I wasn’t strong enough and secure enough to show it. If I had shown it at that time, I would have been completely devastated if people had said anything. Maybe my not really caring about being sexualised is because I’ve never felt desired or desirable. I’ve never felt like a woman, to be honest with you. 

"I’ve never felt desirable. I’ve never felt feminine. I have to convince myself that I’m, like, a pretty girl. I identify as ‘she/her’ and things like that, but I’ve never really felt like a girl."

Billie Eilish honoured Karl Largefeld's legacy at the Met Gala 2023 dressed in a sheer lace corset dress by Irish designer Simone Rocha.

Billie is no stranger to the Met Gala, having previously wowed on the red carpet in a Gucci corset dress in 2022, and a stunning nude Oscar de la Renta gown in 2021. 

Her ensemble on the night comprised a lace-bustier minidress, which was adorned with silver embellishments, and sheer overlay with a statement high neck, with matching embellished gloves.

The event took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, with the world's fashion elite coming together to honour Karl Lagerfeld for the theme of the night, called simply "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty."

Bridal gowns made up the overriding theme of the Met Gala 2023, with Dua Lipa, Nicole Kidman and Gisele Bündchen all seen on the red carpet wearing vintage wedding looks.

Billie, however, bucked the trend with her gothic gown, pairing the look with a hand-beaded jet crystal cluster, tulle gloves and stockings.

To complete the look, Billie's hair was dyed jet black and then styled in a centre parting with a long, thick braid worn over one shoulder.

Designer Simone Rocha said of the look, "I was inspired by Billie herself, her talent, her world, and her powerful femininity."

She continued, "I wanted to celebrate her femininity through fragility and strength. Working with fragile tulle and edging it in lace, interpreting embellishment as armour, and creating a look which reflected an emotion, a very layered piece revealing what lies beneath…"

The look is a far departure from Eilish's 2021 Meta Gala look, which saw the signer channel Marilyn Monroe wearing an opulent champagne ball gown with a dramatically long train, designed by Oscar de la Renta.

The singer has spoken previously about her appearance at the Met Gala on The Howard Stern Radio Show, telling listeners, "The main thing that night made me think or feel was how famous people are just literally nobodies. Just randos."

She explained, "It's so weird. I mean, I was like, Wow, all these people are just somebody that's in class with you, and you think this person's kind of annoying, or you really like this person, you get along with this person, and everybody's just, like, embarrassed and insecure about what they're doing and saying."
