Every decade or so, a new "it girl" arrives and rewrites the rules of modern femininity. Bella Hadid, who has arguably become the defining supermodel of the 2020s, has earned her accolades: there's her much-documented beauty and sartorial stylings, but what looms large is her fierce activism and vulnerability.

I spoke with Hadid ahead of her appointment as Prada Beauty's new ambassador. It had been a whirlwind few weeks for the 29-year-old: deep in Fashion Week preparations, she would go on to walk for Saint Laurent and make her Prada runway debut, wearing not one but four looks.

She arrived a little late to our interview, though you wouldn't know the little of it: she was profusely apologetic and as enthusiastic and disarmingly sweet as her reputation had led me to believe. But of course, we were there to speak about beauty, and Hadid is a bona fide expert. Below, we dig into her early make-up memories, grounding rituals, and her hair as a form of armour.

On her evolving approach to beauty

Nessa Humayun: What's the very first beauty memory you have?

Bella Hadid: Oh, I think it was wearing black liner. I was 14, and my best friends taught me. We'd sneak into our parents' bathroom and find whatever black shades we could get our hands on. I felt very fabulous.

NH: How long did that more grunge-y phase last? Your approach to beauty has really changed from the start of your career.

BH: Honestly, it probably started when I dyed my hair dark as a rebellious 12 or 13-year-old. Then, when I was 19, I worked with the make-up artist Peter Phillips. He really taught me a lot about contouring, how to place concealer, and how to use things around you that aren't necessarily make-up, but more like creative techniques. He taught me lots of little things... Like how eyebrows are sisters, not twins; it's just all those little tips you pick up over the years.

Peter was definitely a huge influence early on, but now, 10 years into my career, I've picked up other tips that have made my style different. Simplicity is key. I love using creamy textures that blend naturally and create a look that feels true to me. I've taken steps from Peter and from other make-up artists, and it's become a collaborative process... Learning, experimenting, and seeing what's new and fun.

On her beauty essentials

NH: What products have really stood the test of time for you?

BH: Skincare is huge! It's the foundation of any beauty routine. And then having a "second skin" product is essential. I say "second skin" a lot, but I truly believe it. Another essential for me is blush, a creamy one that adds a little colour and makes you feel alive. We all work so hard, so it's important to have something that gives you confidence, even if you're not doing a full face of make-up. Sometimes I have to run around like Mary Poppins—everyone calls me that because I carry everything in my bag—but I always have the [upcoming] Prada Touch Cream-to-Powder Blush on me. It sounds like I'm placing these words in my answers, but I truly believe what I'm saying.

NH: To say you travel a lot would be an understatement. What are the three steps you never skip if you need to feel ready?

BH: Definitely a face ice plunge, because my lymph doesn't really drain naturally. In the mornings, I do a lot of jumping, which is weird. My best friend Yasmin and I used to joke about doing interpretive dance in the mornings... We'd make funny moves and jump around, and I actually started feeling better after that. So now I jump around every morning. My dog gets excited like, "What are we doing?" and I'm like, "Mama's just trying to drain a lymph system over here."

I also like to start the day by writing, so letting go of anything from yesterday. And then I'll hydrate my skin to feel really juicy and moisturised, or as Hailey [Bieber] says [like a] "glazed doughnut".

If I have a bit more time, I'll do tinted moisturiser, a little concealer if needed, and a blush. I love Dahlia from the Prada Touch range. When I was on set, I stole this, and they all think I'm a kleptomaniac now or something, but I needed it in my purse. It's dark, almost like a contour, but when you massage it into your skin, it becomes soft and blends into the most beautiful, sun-kissed glow. I like to put it on my cheeks, on my eyes, and in the middle of my lips. It's a one-stop product.

On her signature hair

NH: Your super sleek bun has become iconic. Is it practical or more of a confidence boost?

BH: Honestly, for a really long time, I was very sick, and I was working a lot. I mean, I never said no to a job, so I was always on the road. So, there was something about a tight, snatched ponytail or bun that made me look awake... It now makes people think that I've had 25 facelifts! My friend Jawara [Wauchope] is an incredible hairstylist. He laughs at me because I used to come to shows and be like "tighter, tighter" because I'd be so tired and it would snatch my face up so much. At that point, it was more practical.

It's changed for me over the years, though. I've loved a big blowout, I've gone straight, and now I'm loving the side part. As human beings, we're multifaceted, and we can do what we want. I mean, thank goodness I don't dye my hair so much now, or my agent Joseph would kill me, but sometimes I am like... "Red?"

On her collaboration with Prada

NH: You've just walked the Prada runway for the first time, and now you're the new face of their beauty arm. How does it feel?

BH: Honestly, it's a dream. It once felt unattainable, but working with Prada is an honour; they're authentic, innovative and forward-thinking. Being honest about the products I love is important. I have a genuine connection with the Prada product team—we’re all excited, and I would never promote something I don’t genuinely believe in. Mrs Prada herself is the pinnacle of fashion, femininity, and strength.

NH: Thanks so much, Bella, and for all your activism too!

BH: Thank you, it means so much to me. I really appreciate it.

Everyone looks forward to 'Prada day' during Milan Fashion Week—and not just for the guarantee of a star-studded front row, either... Featuring just 15 looks and 15 models—Bella Hadid, included—the show saw each appear four times, but with different layers in the spotlight to reflect how one outfit can transform at different moments in the same day.

"Layering is meaningful," explained Miuccia Prada. "Within the collection, pieces are laid over each other, and then taken away—and in that process, our perceptions of the individual garments, the outfits and the women who wear them constantly transform... When pieces are laid over each other and contrasted, they create inherent contradictions. It’s always to express the complexity of life."

And complex though life may be, Prada's AW26 show was proof that with the right tools at your disposal, getting dressed doesn't have to be... All you need is a few hard-working hero pieces and a little creativity—and that's your capsule wardrobe, sorted. Fortunately, the collection itself acted as the perfect blueprint, not just defining how stylish women will be dressing next season, but offering ideas that can be implemented in our daily outfits right now, too.

The Statement Boots

Prada provided a much-needed reminder that sometimes, all you need is fabulous pair of boots to really make an outfit pop—especially when patterned or bright, and styled to contrast with otherwise pared-back greys, blacks and neutrals. Mark my words: this particular pair of acid-yellow, embroidered knee-highs is destined to be one of the must-haves of the season.

The Sporty Jacket

Anoraks, parkas, retro shell jackets and all manner of sporty, technical styles have been enjoying a serious glow-up of late—and ever the brand to bring a dose of practicality to high fashion, Prada was naturally one of the trend's earliest proponents. This season, the brand offered up drawstring-waist parkas in bright primary colours, extravagantly trimmed with fur and layered over elegant, ladylike dresses in a way that felt fresh, cool and functional all at once.

The Earring(s)

Who knew that a single, fabulous, oversize, floral earring could so dramatically elevate an ensemble? Mrs. Prada, that's who! Cue stylish women everywhere investing in anything similar they can find, and leaving the second part of the pair purposefully behind.

The Midi Skirt

The show seemed to say: never underestimate the power of a great skirt, over and over again, and in countless fabulous iterations. The statement midi has been on the rise for a few seasons now, but Prada's jazzy embellished, sheer, and layered styles have cemented the item's status as a 2026 wardrobe must-have. Pair with a plain top or knit, and let the skirt do all the heavy lifting.

The Pink Shirt

The profound desire to own and wear a bright pink shirt wasn't on my 2026 bingo card, but such is the power of Prada. If you're not quite ready to wear one out and proud, allow me to point you in the direction of the catwalk, where just the exaggerated cuff was styled popping out of a jumper or jacket to add a considered and incredibly chic flash of colour.

Bella Hadid has officially reawakened boho style from its early-2000s slumber. The supermodel, and noted Y2K revivalist, was recently spotted in Los Angeles wearing a flimsy buttermilk camisole dress from Mango. It’s £89.99 and it’s still in stock.

Hadid has been quietly championing boho elements for months, weaving gauzy crochet, patchwork denim, and slouchy suede into her off-duty wardrobe. A true fashion magpie, she grounds these vintage-tinged textures with rugged staples—leather belts, beaten-up cowboy boots (there have been many cowboy boots), and layers of vintage silver jewellery that suggest a well-travelled past or at least an extensive treasure trove of vintage finds.

All of these hallmarks were on show earlier this week, when she went to a friend’s baby shower in a Los Angeles park. Her whisper-thin high street slip dress also nodded to one of the season’s most enduring trends: lingerie dressing. Delicate lace inserts framed the bodice, which hung from pin-thin, tie-fastening straps.

Gone are the tired tropes of festival fashion. Instead, Hadid is channeling the original ethos of bohemianism—eccentricity, individuality, and a touch of romance.

In an age of algorithmic style when it’s hard to even work out your own style, let alone stay true to it, Bella Hadid’s dedication to boho (with a cowboy boyfriend to boot) feels refreshingly instinctive.

Audrey Hepburn might seem an unlikely muse for fashion’s Favourite Y2K revivalist, but Bella Hadid is anything but predictable, as her recent Cannes outing proved. Eschewing last year’s naked dress trend (and adhering to *this* year’s “no nudity” dress code), Hadid cosplayed as an It Girl of yore: Holly Golightly.

More than six decades since Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the image of Hepburn in a black Givenchy gown, oversized sunglasses, and a dazzling frosting of diamonds remains one of fashion’s most indelible moments. From the bateau necklines of Sabrina to the capri trousers and ballet flats (a Gallic combo if ever there was one) Hepburn wore off-screen, her Givenchy-heavy wardrobe was a masterclass in restraint and it’s precisely this style philosophy that feels so relevant—and refreshing—in today’s maximalist world where red carpet dressing demands ever-more sensationalist levels of opulence. Listen: if there were ever to be a poster girl for beachy, unfussy hair, it would be me. I've been reaching for the sea salt spray for years now to achieve those nonchalant surfer girl waves many of us dream of, but sometimes I want to feel just a touch more pretty and polished.

I don’t want to get too carried away (on Sunday, I triumphantly declared it “the end of winter” only to wake up on Monday to what weather forecasters on daytime TV like to call ‘a cold snap’, so I’ve learnt my lesson). However, spring is within our sights and with it new outfit opportunities. Suddenly, life seems to have so much potential: there are longer days and lighter layers to look forward to.

Gigi Hadid has gotten a jump on things. The model was spotted at Paris Fashion Week in the ultimate winter-spring transitional outfit: jeans and a bomber. The first jacket in question is by London designer Charlotte Simone and it goes on sale on March 26th when the cult label opens its virtual doors for a one-week-only archive sale.

The ‘Frankie’ jacket comes in washed leather for a love-worn look with a detachable shearling collar and silver-tone hardware and in true transitional fashion, it can be styled as both a jacket and a shirt (or mystery third option: a shacket).

Extra props to Gigi for the added hack of tucking the jacket into the jeans, which added an unexpected air of refinement to an otherwise typically off-duty-model outfit.

Gigi, who is known for a preppier aesthetic, seems to have taken styling tips from her sister Bella Hadid, whose love of a 90s Matrix-esque ensemble is unrivalled. Until now: for her first look, Gigi teamed her leather bomber jacket with an all-black outfit featuring small black shades (a Bella staple), high-rise jeans, and black loafers (something about the matching black socks made it feel even more severe—in a good way). A slicked-back bun pulled the whole thing together, while her typically pared-back makeup softened the monotone look.

The second look was more in keeping with Gigi’s preppy style and played on another spring trend: two-tone dressing. For this, she balanced oversized black leather (and another jacket) with playful pops of ice-white in the form of a snug beanie hat, baby tee, and (again) socks.

The focus here is on layering with versatility, which makes dressing in-between seasons so much easier. The scaled-up proportions of Gigi’s bomber mean you can easily layer it over knits while there’s still a chill, but it’ll work just as well atop a baby tee or dress when spring finally arrives.

Bella Hadid is known for her love of vintage wares. The model-turned-cowgirl-turned-entrepreneur is synonymous with 00s-era fashion. This year alone, she’s heralded the return of divisive noughties styles like the Carrie Bradshaw-esque naked dress, Capri pants, and now the oversized fit-everything-but-the-kitchen-sink bag.

Once problematically referred to as a ‘hobo’ bag, the curved scaled-up style was routinely spotted on the arm (this was also the era of ‘arm candy’ as a descriptor) of the ‘00s It Girls. Mischa Barton, Sienna Miller and, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were rarely seen without their supersize shopper bags (and those slouchy beanies to match). So the style was ripe for a renaissance, and who better to reintroduce bigger bags to a new micro accessory-loving audience than Bella Hadid?

Despite looking vintage (a canny move from Coach, given fashion’s love for all things retro), the Brooklyn bag debuted in the label’s Autumn 2024 collection, signalling a departure from the micro bags that have dominated runways and TikTok for the last few years.

Nodding to the style’s retro appeal, Creative Director Stuart Vever said the Brooklyn puts a “playful spin on legacy silhouettes.” Unlike other hyped bags, this is an entirely wearable and practical bag, as anyone who has to haul their stuff into an office will attest. It’s characterised by its streamlined silhouette and fuss-free design, meaning the Brooklyn works with graphic baby tees and bedazzled archive Gucci trousers à la Hadid, as well as pared-back office outfits. The Brooklyn’s power lies in its simplicity.

Coach has found success in reinventing or reinterpreting vintage designs—the label’s much-loved Tabby Shoulder 26, which launched in 2019, was reimagined from a similar ’70s style—so our bets are on the Brooklyn becoming a hallmark style for the label.

She's walked in runway shows for every designer you can think of and fronted campaigns for the likes of Chanel, Prada, Fendi, Tiffany & Co and more. Yet, despite all this, Vittoria Ceretti may not be a name you instantly recognise. 

While once, models could be plucked from obscurity and go on to become household names (Kate Moss was scouted at an airport for example, and Naomi Campbell was spotted while shopping in London) these days that is a relatively uncommon occurrence. 

Today, many of the supermodels we know by name are second-generation celebrities—see Kendall Jenner, Gigi and Bella Hadid, and Kaia Gerber for proof—born to parents who are famous in their own right. 

For someone like Vittoria Ceretti, who is from the town of Brescia in Italy, that can be a lot to contend with.

In an Instagram post this weekend which was later shared by Diet Prada, Ceretti spoke out about what is it like to work in an industry full of "nepo babies." The term, which is short for nepotism babies, garnered popularity earlier this year and refers to famous figures who are thought to have gained success thanks to their equally famous or well-connected parents.

"I just want to share a thought here because I can," Vittoria started. "I bumped into an interview of a so-called 'nepo baby' or whatever y'all call it." 

She continued, "Let me tell you something. Yes, I get the whole 'Im here and I work hard for it,' but I would really love to see if you would have lasted thru the first five years of my career [sic]." 

Ceretti added, "You have no f**king idea how much you have to fight to make people respect you. TAKES YEARS. You just get it by free day one." 

In her post, Ceretti chronicled the typical experience of privilege in the fashion industry, saying that many models often wait hours for a fitting or a casting, only to have a nepo baby model "walk past you from the warm seat of her/his Mercedes with her/his driver and her/his friend/assistant/agent taking care of HER/HIS MENTAL HEALTH."

While Ceretti didn't explicitly say it, many are speculating that her post was in response to the recent interview with Lily Rose Depp, that ran in this month's edition of ELLE US. 

In the article, Depp said, "The internet cares a lot more about who your family is than the people who are casting you in things. Maybe you get your foot in the door, but you still just have your foot in the door. There’s a lot of work that comes after that.”

She continued, "It’s weird to me to reduce somebody to the idea that they’re only there because it’s a generational thing." The model and actress, who is the daughter of Johnny Depp went on, "If somebody’s mom or dad is a doctor, and then the kid becomes a doctor, you’re not going to be like, ‘Well, you’re only a doctor because your parent is a doctor.’ It’s like, ‘No, I went to medical school and trained." 

While this analogy might not necessarily hit the mark for some, one additional point that Depp raised was that we, as a general public, only really hear about "nepo babies" in reference to female celebrities. "I don’t think that it’s a coincidence,” Depp said. 

Lily Allen took to Twitter this weekend to echo these sentiments. "Can we start a list of male nepo babies, for balance?" she wrote. 

If you're interested, other people on that list include Ansel Elgort (whose father is famed fashion photographer Arthur Elgort), Timothée Chalamet (whose mother was a broadway star and grandfather was a filmmaker) and Brooklyn Beckham (who... well, we all know who his parents are).

As we know from the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller, Jennifer Aniston and Tracee Ellis Ross—all of whom have famous parents—the concept of a "nepo baby" in the entertainment industry is nothing new.

And while Ceretti's choice to address the nepo baby discussion on Instagram did feel fueled by frustration, in the end, the model admitted she only wants people to be able to appreciate and acknowledge their privilege.

"I have many nepo baby friends whom I respect, but I can't stand listening to you compare yourself to me," she wrote. "I was not born on a comfy sexy pillow with a view. I know it's not your fault, but please, appreciate and know the place you came from." 

Busy, busy.

It was the finale that launched a thousand Instagram stories: Bella Hadid standing statuesque on stage at Coperni, while two people with spray cans painted a dress onto her body. Miraculously, within moments the spray turned into fabric, allowing Bella to glide off the catwalk, triumphant in staging one of the most memorable fashion show finales in some time.

 Between that viral Coperni moment and turns at Versace, Tom Ford, Burberry and more, there is no denying that Bella Hadid has had an extremely successful fashion season. Walking a grand total of 19 shows, Hadid has been heralded as the new queen of the catwalk, earning her place as an emerging supermodel one step at a time.

On TikTok fans are claiming her dedication is unmatched, sighting Bella as the "hardest working model" in the industry. However, while Bella might be the one we're seeing most across social media (the spray-on dress moment garnered 6.9 million views on Coperni's post alone) there are other models who are racking up even higher step counts.

Throughout fashion month, Bella Hadid appeared in 19 shows, yet some of the other top models in the industry walked upwards of 30. According to Models.com, Venezuelan beauty América González was the most utilised model this season walking a total of 36 shows, while Sherry Shi was a close second, walking 35. Rachel Marx and Sacha Quenby each took to the catwalk a total of 33 times, and Alaato Jazyper appeared in 31 shows.

It is quite the feat when you think about the fact that fashion month takes place across four different cities, with each show occurring in a completely different location. Plus there can be hours of pre-show hair and makeup involved, as well.

While we certainly don't want to take anything away from Bella Hadid (she has undoubtedly worked this season) the models below deserve just as much admiration. Keep scrolling to see the eight models who walked in the most shows this fashion month.

One question on everyone's lips when the Met Gala comes around is what actually happens once the celebrities have left the red carpet, climbed the iconic stairs at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, and entered the event?

Thanks to Bella Hadid we know - kind of.

The 25-year-old model has given us a sneak peek of the goings on at the Met Gala - and we couldn't be happier.

The style icon shared a collage of photos from the star studded event, which host Anna Wintour plans meticulously months ahead of the May bash. 

Bella shared a string of images from the evening, which included selfies with her and fellow guests, such as Paloma Elsesser, as well as candid shots of models, singers and actors at the annual fashion extravaganza, including model Imaan Hammam and Nicki Minaj.

A separate image captures Iris Law posing with fellow models Paloma, Imaan and Precious Lee, while another shot from the evening sees Iris pose beside a pair of pink Louboutin stilettos perched on top of a bush at the bash. After all, that is the only way to end an eventful night, right?

Bella also shared a video of her with her celebrity pals laughing away. The snippet sees Billie Eilish and Bella giggling away with sister Gigi Hadid, as well as singers Lizzo and Ciara.

A separate photo caught Bella and Billie sticking their tongues out, while Lizzo and Gigi are beaming with joy beside them, before two more group shots were taken; one serious, and one candid shot.

A group image saw Bella, Lizzo, Gigi and Ciara joined by Bridgerton's Phoebe Dynevor, and Squid Games' HoYeon Jung, who all posed seriously for the first image, which was followed by a photo of them all giggling in what appears to be the Met toilets - or another very discrete place at the venue.

Bella simply captioned the post with a black heart emoji, and within just five hours, the post has racked up over one million likes on the photo-sharing site - that must be a record?

The fashion muse not only showed us a snippet of what goes on behind closed doors at the Met Gala, but also the goings on ahead of the occasion with a string of images of her preparing to brave the red carpet.

A separate slew of images see Bella surrounded by her team, including make up artist and stylist, on her Instagram account.

Among the collection of images, Bella also shared a close up of the custom made Burberry corset she wore for the evening, and took the time to thank her team, but also designer Riccardo Tisci for creating the masterpiece.

She wrote: "Thank God for every person in these photos. I am grateful and adore every one of you. Riccardo - I love You amore."
