I'm not someone who wears makeup every day. If I'm going to an event or filming content, I'm guaranteed to be wearing it, but when I'm just meeting a friend for coffee or doing a grocery shop, I like to leave my skin with just skincare on. Since I go bare-faced more often than not, I'm always on the hunt for other ways to boost my glow.

I've long been a fan of the original Rhode Glazing Milk for the glass-skin look it gives, and the way it soothes my perioral dermatitis. It's genius, and it's completely levelled up my radiance and garnered me more than a few compliments.

How We Test

I wanted to test this product in two ways. First, I wanted to make sure that these Highlight Milks had the same moisturising and soothing skincare benefits as the original Glazing Milks. It was important to me that the skin benefits were not compromised with the addition of the luminescence. Secondly, I wanted to test just how glowy they made my skin, both on their own and under makeup.

I have been using these daily for at least six weeks—they are firmly part of my routine now and are very unlikely to leave it. So I’ve had time to test these products thoroughly, in many different scenarios and in many different temperatures. When I say these have my stamp of approval, it’s because they haven’t failed me once.

First Impressions

I was so happy when I discovered that these had exactly the same texture and feel as their original counterparts. They're also scent-free, great for sensitive skin and apply the same way and sink in just as quickly, leaving that famous non-sticky, non-tacky glass-skin glaze. Except now, that glaze comes with a pearlescent luminescence that makes the skin genuinely shine (in a good way). Like the original, they're still packed with skin-barrier-fortifying ceramides, plus hydrating glycerin and moisturising antioxidant vitamin E.

I tried two of the four shades—01 Pearly Pink and 02 Pearly Champagne—both recommended for my pale skin, with the other two shades better for deeper skin tones.

As for the packaging, it is in typical Rhode style—cylindrical plastic canisters in muted, neutral tones—and it suits the dispensing of this product perfectly.

How to Apply

As I've already mentioned, these look incredible on both bare skin and under foundation. While you'd apply the original Rhode Glazing Milk as one of the first steps in your routine, much like any milky toner or essence, the Highlight Milks look glowiest applied last—after SPF, before makeup. Or better still, apply both ways to really maximise the luminescence.

As with any skincare essence, lotion or moisturiser, apply the Highlight Milks with your fingers, massaging the product in and letting it absorb (and almost dry down) for a minute or two. There's no streaking or downside to using more than you need, so experiment until you find what works for you.

The Verdict

It's safe to say I'm obsessed with the Rhode Highlight Milks. They're easy to apply, deliver clear skincare benefits every time, and give incredible glow-boosting results. They look best worn alone, but still deliver a solid radiance boost under makeup. If your skin's feeling dull and flat, these milks will save you daily and make you look like the healthiest person in the room. They're also great mixed into foundation—turning a matte base glowy, or sheering out a full-coverage one.

The pearlescent shine left behind doesn't feel like it's sitting on top of my skin—it feels part of it. Even mid-workout, sweating and wiping my face with a towel, there's no visible layer or residue coming off. In hot weather, nothing gets slippery or slides around either. My skin feels soothed and moisturised, and they visibly add dimension and a more perfected finish. They even work beautifully on the décolletage, delivering a healthier and more glowy look.

Which of the four shades suits you best will depend on your skin tone. Worn alone, I prefer 02 Pearly Champagne—it adds a slight warmth that minimises the look of hyperpigmentation for a more even tone. Under makeup, though, I reach for 01 Pearly Pink, as it's the lightest and lifts my complexion, making my foundation look brighter and more radiant. Worn alone, 01 actually increases the visibility of the redness around my nose from perioral dermatitis, and enhances my dark spots. It really is about experimenting to see what works best for your skin's tone and concerns. Our brows have been through it all. In the early 00's, many of us fell victim to the over-plucking craze, à la Pamela Anderson. If you were lucky enough to have yours grow back, you likely dabbled in the full, bushy brow look Cara Delevingne pioneered years later. Next, they were laminated and fluffed up beyond recognition, and now? They're going low-contrast.

What are low contrast brows?

Low contrast brows have been popularised by celebrity make-up artist of the moment, Nina Park, who uses the look to soften and accentuate the facial features she's working with. Instead of the brows being the focal point, they harmonise with everything else including your eye or lip, or your hair colour.

They're a world-away from the bleached brow trend that was all the craze a few years ago. "They're a softer evolution," says Hollie Parkes, renowned brow artist. "Rather than removing all of the pigment, the brows are lightened by just a few shades to create a more diffused, effortless finish."

They're surprisingly versatile, too. "It's particularly beautiful on anyone who feels their brows dominate their features, as softening the colour allows the eyes, skin and bone structure to take centre stage," notes Parkes. "They can also be lovely for blondes wanting a softer grow-out, brunettes looking to brighten their complexion, or anyone wanting to experiment with the bleached brow trend without committing to such a dramatic change."

The key here is subtlety. The brow artist rarely recommends taking the brows platinum, and instead prefers to lift them just a few shades, which is enough to completely change the balance of the face.

What's the process like?

After a consultation with Parkes, I was ready to take the plunge, and as someone with incredibly dark brows (darker than my actual hair), I was a little nervous. I had no reason to be worried, however, as Parkes reassured me: low contrast brows should not be dramatic; you're only going a few shades lighter than their natural tone.

First, she began by protecting the skin around the brows with a barrier cream before applying the lightener through the hairs.

"The difference with low-contrast brows is timing," she explains. "We’re not trying to fully bleach the brows, we’re simply softening the colour, so the product is checked regularly and removed much sooner. The aim is to lift the depth of the hair, not erase it. It’s a very controlled process and should always be tailored to the individual’s natural brow colour and desired finish."

In my case, because I have very dark hair, it took a full 10 minutes for the bleach to finish doing its magic, and lighten my brows by three whole (but subtle) shades. After that, Parkes ran a toner through them to ensure they didn't take on too much of a warm-tone.

The results

I was thrilled with my results. They're natural enough not to garner raised eyebrows (pun unintended) from my friends and family, but noticeable enough to make a difference. I find that my features pop more, and they just feel a bit more casual than the super strong, dark look I had before.

It's also important to practice proper after-care. As Parkes explains, lightening treatments can leave the hair feeling drier, so nourishing them afterwards with conditioning treatments or a brow serum helps keep brows healthy, glossy and soft.

Can you achieve low-contrast brows at home?

Yes, says the brow expert, but she encourages proceeding with caution. "Brows lighten very quickly, so it’s important to work gradually rather than trying to achieve the final result in one go. If you’re unsure whether you’ll like the look, I’d actually recommend trying a lighter-toned brow mascara first. It’s a great way to test the effect before reaching for the bleach."

You've been living under a (beauty) rock if you haven’t heard of PDRN. Many know it as the injectable, polynucleotide treatment, colloquially known as the “salmon sperm facial”, but a slew of topical products featuring the ingredient is the latest export from South Korea. They promise similar results, minus the needles.

So, what is it? PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) is a regenerative DNA fragment, most commonly derived from salmon or trout sperm. While it may sound new, it’s been used since the 1990’s as a pharmaceutical treatment for tissue repair, including treating burns and repairing tendons. This is because PDRN is highly biocompatible with human DNA, meaning it can stimulate collagen production, improve skin elasticity, reduce inflammation and speed up wound healing. In recent years, it’s become a runaway success in South Korean aesthetic clinics for its skin-boosting properties and ability to deliver the sought-after “glass skin” effect.

Of course, if you’re looking for the maximum effects of the ingredient, dermatologists recommend going the injectable route. The next best option are PDRN serums and creams—however, as Consultant Dermatologist Dr Zainab Laftah explains, not all are created equal.

How can PDRN skincare products benefit skin?

PDRN stands out from many recent hero ingredients as it’s positioned as a regenerative active ingredient. “Research suggests that it may support tissue repair through several pathways, including activating repair signals in the skin, supporting the cells that produce collagen and maintain the skin barrier, encouraging the formation of new blood vessels and helping to regulate inflammation,” the dermatologist tells me. All this may offer potential benefits for rejuvenation and wound healing, including acne scarring.

Regarding results, dermatology studies suggest that improvements in hydration and barrier recovery can appear in just two weeks, while changes in elasticity may take a month or longer. “With continued use, the skin may look plumper, calmer and smoother, with modest improvements in firmness and fine lines,” Dr Laftah continues, adding that: “Topical evidence remains limited, so these timelines cannot be applied to every PDRN product, and results should not be expected to match those achieved with injectable treatments.”

Who is topical PDRN good for?

If you have dry, dehydrated, sensitive or compromised skin, PDRN is a great option. It’s excellent for barrier recovery, reducing irritation, and treating early signs of ageing, including fine lines and reduced elasticity. Plus, its regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties make it suitable for those who are recovering after more invasive aesthetic procedures, including microneedling, laser treatments, and chemical peels.

In fact, Dr Laftah adds that using these products after such traumatic treatments may even enhance delivery because the skin’s barrier has been temporarily disrupted. Although it should only be introduced in line with the treating clinician’s aftercare advice.

What’s the difference between PDRN injections and topical products?

As Dr Laftah stresses, the most robust data on PDRN supporting skin repair and reducing inflammation comes from injections rather than products applied to the face. “This is because PDRN consists of relatively large DNA fragments, so the skin’s outermost layer may substantially limit penetration.”

And as she warns, there’s a lot of clever marketing around the ingredient—but molecular size, concentration, stability and the delivery system matter; they greatly influence how much PDRN actually reaches the target skin cells and how effectively they work. “Products need to provide a stable delivery system that is designed to address its large size, limited skin permeability and susceptibility to degradation.”

Is there an optimal dose of PDRN?

In dermatology circles, a topical dose has not yet been established, although brands like Dr Reju-All have been conducting their own research.

The brand claims that their clinical studies have determined that 1,200ppm of 99%-pure PDRN yields the most complete regenerative benefits, without exceeding the skin’s absorption threshold. This tracks; as Dr Laftah tells Marie Claire UK, early studies of low-molecular-weight PDRN are promising. Higher concentrations may sound exciting, but they don’t penetrate deeper or work faster. Instead, they can increase the chance of adverse reactions.

What to look for in a PDRN product

If you’re in the market for a PDRN cream or serum, the derm recommends looking for the following: “A clearly disclosed PDRN source, concentration, and molecular profile.” If the concentration isn’t listed, it’s likely too low to show any viable results, and a lower molecular profile is generally favoured for increased absorption.”

Dr Laftah also recommends products that demonstrate human clinical studies of the finished product, and a complete ingredient list. “Good tolerability is much more important than marketing claims,” she concludes.

Derm-approved PDRN products

I make no secret of my aversion to fake tan. I have never quite understood how anyone can be bothered to undergo the whole arduous application process weekly, and contending with transfer onto bedsheets and needing to wash it off the next morning is far too much admin for me. So when I discovered that the Bali Body Clear Self Tanning Gel promises easy application, zero transfer, and no rinse required, I had to see if this could be the fake tan to cure my affliction.

Aussie brand Bali Body has been gaining serious traction in the tanning world for several years now, and it's quickly shot to the top of most beauty editors' roundups of tanning waters and instant tans that won't disappoint. What makes for the best fake tan will vary depending on your current beauty routine, but I can bet that most of us value ease of use over much else. Considering this formula requires zero rinsing, won't transfer onto clothes, and dries down quickly, it seems to tick that box nicely. But of course, I had to properly put it to the test to see if it could really deliver—and cure my tanning hatred.

How We Test

For this piece, I documented my first time testing the Bali Body Clear Self Tanning Gel from start to finish. I assessed the packaging, ease of application, texture, absorption, any residue, drying time, smell, and—of course—the tanning results. I compared this to my natural skin tone, and payed close attention to check for to any harsh lines, orange tints, or dry patches that might crop up.

First Impressions

At 400ml, this is a very generous sized fake tan housed in a sleek plastic pump bottle. The applicator is the first thing that got my seal of approval, as it can be placed on a table and pumped out with zero effort—no holding a big bottle in one hand and trying to force out the product with the other, inevitably resulting in the formula getting everywhere.

As soon as you pump it out, this fake tan feels similar to an aloe vera gel with a slightly more watery consistency. It's very thin and glossy, and I could tell immediately that it wouldn't require much effort to rub in. This also means that a little goes a long way, as you really don't need much for even a large area. It also didn't have much of a smell when first pumped out, which made the application process more pleasant.

It only comes in one shade at the moment—dark—so I proceeded with caution by going for light layers to ensure it didn't stray into unnatural territory on me.

How To Apply

Before applying, I had assumed that I'd need some sort of tanning mitt—as is standard for most fake tans. But to my delight, the bottle suggested just applying with your hands. Although I was slightly sceptical about the results, my preference for low-effort tanning meant that I went ahead with it. I started with a couple of pumps into my palm before rubbing the product into my arms in circular motions and went from there. I loved how quickly it began to sink in and dry right away, without me needing to wait. This meant that I could do a couple of layers in the same area almost instantly to make sure I was fully covered.

Rather than a typical fake tan mousse, it felt much more like skincare to apply. Disappearing like a moisturiser, I only needed several seconds on each area before continuing. Due to the gel nature, it was ever so slightly sticky until fully dried, but not enough to be uncomfortable, rub off on anything, or leave any residue lingering.

I gave it about ten minutes after applying before lying on my white bed sheets, just to be safe, but after that I felt confident carrying on with my evening without fear of any tan wiping off or transferring. I was conscious of the biscuit-y fake tan smell, which did hang around for a few hours after applying, but it wasn't too strong or overwhelming. And by the next day, it was totally gone.

One thing to note is that you don't get any guide colour with the Bali Body Clear Self Tanning Gel—it is totally clear. This did make me slightly nervous as a tan novice, since I'm not used to how much product to use where or how many layers I would need. Given it takes 4-6 hours to fully develop, it was a slightly anxious wait to see how my efforts would turn out.

Plus, this is a no-rinse tan, so the colour you've applied is what you get. Although this might be scary to some, this was music to my low-effort ears. I absolutely loved that I didn't need to factor a shower and scrub into my tanning routine, I could just apply and go with no more thought.

The Verdict

I was with friends the morning after applying the Bali Body Clear Self Tanning Gel, and the first comment from everyone was how tanned I looked—and naturally so.

The difference it had made to my skin became most clear when I took off my ring and could see the dramatic tan line left behind (pictured below) that emulated two weeks lying in the sun.

I had feared waking up looking orange, but a thorough inspection of my skin in daylight showed me that there was no abnormal colour, no harsh lines where I hadn't blended it properly, and no dry areas where it had clung to my skin. Yes, even on my knees and elbows. I have to confess that I didn't even exfoliate my skin before tanning (a cardinal sin, I know), but that didn't even seem to matter. There was no trace of any issues left behind.

Admittedly, there is a small area on my back where I know I didn't do a very good job at blending evenly, and you can slightly see when you look closely. But miraculously, it's such a subtle line that I don't think anyone would notice without staring closely.

I'm now a few days after applying, and my tan is still going strong. It has faded slightly, as to be expected considering I've showered several times and even gone for a swim in the sea, but the glow is still visible.

Considering how quick and easy this was to apply with zero equipment or prep, how speedily it dried, and no rinsing off afterwards, I can say this product alone has made me a fake tan convert. It didn't take more than 20 minutes out of my evening with no more thought required. For me, this is the perfect way to fake tan.

More clear tanners to try

In an era of fragrance wardrobes, seasonal scent rotations and experimental perfume layering, actor Alisha Boe has decided to do things a little differently when it comes to her scent.

It's a refreshingly uncomplicated philosophy in a moment when fragrance has never been more experimental. While beauty lovers increasingly curate perfume wardrobes to suit every mood, Boe prefers one bottle that feels unmistakably like her.

The actor is the new face of Yves Saint Laurent Beauty's Black Opium franchise—a fragrance she knew well long before signing on. "Black Opium is such an iconic fragrance," she says. "I was very familiar with it, and I was so excited to jump on."

The latest interpretation introduces juicy strawberry alongside the fragrance's signature coffee, vanilla and white florals—a combination that initially caught Boe off guard. "What I love about the strawberry is that it's more like a farmer's market strawberry," she says. "It's very fresh and nice. I'm such a big fan of jasmine and vanilla, and I think marrying the two is so interesting. It's very warming and inviting and magnetic."

The Best Fragrances Aren't Worn for Other People

Perfume is often framed as something we wear to make an impression. Not for Boe. "It's more so how it makes me feel," she explains. "If I want to feel very confident and sexy, I'll throw on a really good scent."

Still, she believes fragrance is one of the few beauty choices people actually remember. "You remember if someone smells incredible," she says. "People talk about that for a long time. 'Did you meet that girl? She smelled amazing. What was she wearing?' There's so much mystery around it."

Unlike makeup or fashion, fragrance is invisible, which may be precisely why it feels so personal.

The Scent Memory She'll Never Forget

Despite fragrance's ephemeral nature, scent and memory are inseparable, and Boe is acutely aware of it—how a smell can outlast the moment it belongs to, resurfacing a whole place and time long after the details have blurred.

The fragrances that have stayed with her longest never came from a bottle. She moved from Norway to Los Angeles at seven, landing in an entirely new world—one she still recalls through smell more vividly than anything else.

"I remember the smell of dust and hot concrete, chlorine, because every house, it seemed, had a pool, and that was so, so exotic," she recalls. "Those three smells are my earliest memories because it was such a big change in my life."

For actors, fragrance can double as a tool for stepping into character. Plenty of performers assign a different scent to each role, using it as another route into a fictional world. Boe has tried it herself.

"It is a fascinating technique," she says. "It goes back to how smell evokes memories and recall. I have done it once, and I think it just speaks to how important smell is to humans."

She spends much of her working life in the hair and makeup chair, but fragrance is the one step she keeps for herself. "My mornings are pretty different every day," she says. "I'll wash my face, shower, brush my teeth, floss—very important—and because I go into hair and makeup, I kind of leave that to them. Then the last thing I do is put on perfume."

"I've Never Really Cared About the Opinions of Strangers"

Sleepmaxxing, a term that's amassed millions of views across TikTok, promises to transform everything from your productivity and mood to your lifespan and skin health. As the name suggests, it involves optimising what we all spend around a third of our lives doing: sleeping.

When I first heard about sleepmaxxing, I dismissed it as another wellness trend overcomplicating something we do without thinking, and then perimenopause reared its head and, well, desperation had me rethinking all things sleep. As someone who never really had an issue sleeping (I just liked a lot of it), I found the unpredictable night sweats that woke me up at all hours of the night, the inability to fall back asleep as easily as I once did, and the nighttime anxiety that saw me lying in bed for hours unable to sleep – all left me feeling exhausted come morning. But I didn’t only feel rough; I looked rough too.

My skin was drier, duller and more reactive. Hormonal breakouts lingered for longer, redness became harder to calm, and that healthy glow I used to sport seemed to disappear overnight. My instinct was to switch up my skincare and book in for some hardcore aesthetic treatments, but as I started to research how best to get my glow back, I realised ‘beauty sleep’ isn’t just a phrase.

The Science of Sleepmaxxing

We may think of sleep as relaxing ‘downtime’, but our bodies are hard at work while we’re catching zzz’s. "All functions that have to do with regeneration, healing, growing and system maintenance happen while we sleep. This applies to all body systems, think, muscle growth, wound healing, immune modulation and brain programming. It is as fundamental a function as eating and breathing," reveals consultant neurologist and sleep physician at longevity hospital Reborne, Dr Oliver Bernath.

We cycle through light sleep, deep slow-wave sleep and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep several times each night, with each stage performing a different role. "Light sleep is no less important than deep sleep," says Bernath. "It's simply easier to wake someone from it. Deep sleep seems to have more to do with system maintenance of vital functions, while REM sleep has more to do with creativity and new learning, and light sleep contributes to memory formation and learning," he explains.

But when it comes to our skin, deep sleep is key. “Growth hormone secretion peaks in the first few hours of deep sleep, and this is what drives skin cell turnover and collagen production. Blood flow to the skin also increases, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to support that repair work.

Meanwhile, cortisol—which breaks down collagen and increases oil production and inflammation when chronically elevated—is naturally at its lowest during deep sleep. This means that for some hours the skin can focus on rebuilding without having to defend itself at the same time,” reveals aesthetic doctor, Alicia Gonzalez-Fernandez.

However, despite the fact that when sleep is disrupted the brain prioritises deep sleep, there’s only so much of it that you can get if you’re not asleep for long enough, says Bernath. That’s why, according to Gonzalez-Fernandez, “people with consistently poor sleep show significantly more visible signs of skin ageing and conditions like acne and hyperpigmentation than good sleepers. And while skincare can support the skin's environment, it can’t replace the growth hormone release and collagen synthesis that happens during deep sleep."

With this in mind, I wondered if consistent ‘good’ sleep would translate into healthier skin and rid me of my skin woes? And there was only one way to find out, so I spent six months putting the most popular sleepmaxxing hacks to the test; here’s how it went…

The Benefits of Sleep Tracking

While I know health trackers can trigger anxiety and perfectionism, I am a big fan of data. So, I was willing to run the risk of getting a little addicted to my sleep scores if it meant I’d get a better understanding of my perimenopause symptoms and how they were impacting my sleep patterns.

The Oura Health & Fitness Tracker Smart Ring, from £229.99, felt like the best option for this, not only does it monitor how long you sleep, it tracks the quality and architecture of your sleep too, measuring how much time you spend awake, in light sleep, deep sleep and REM sleep, alongside metrics such as your resting heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), respiratory rate, body temperature and overnight movement to generate a daily Sleep Score and Readiness Score. Worn on your finger, where, according to Oura, blood flow can be measured more accurately than at the wrist, the ring combines these physiological signals to build a detailed picture of how well you've recovered overnight.

I discovered very quickly that on the nights I had woken up drenched in sweat, I experienced more fragmented sleep, and I generally slept less too. And while knowing how this perimenopause symptom impacted my sleep didn’t mean I knew how to stop it from happening, it did mean the Oura AI could tell me when I typically experienced night sweats, which meant I could pre-empt them and plan accordingly – think keeping my room cool, ditching my duvet, wearing breathable clothes and sleeping on top of a towel. Over time this meant I sweated less and slept better.

Another interesting insight the ring gave me was my chronotype, a measure of my body's natural sleep-wake preference. Rather than simply telling me to go to bed earlier, it identified that I’m an evening type, confirming that my body naturally prefers a later bedtime. It was surprisingly reassuring because I’ve had periods when I’ve forced myself to go to bed early, only to twiddle my thumbs for hours and feel like a failure for not being able to sleep before midnight.

"Society tends to favour morning people. But humans evolved with different chronotypes. Meaning sleep before midnight isn't automatically better for everyone. Consistency, getting enough sleep, and aligning with your own circadian rhythm matters more," reveals Karsikas. Bernath agrees, warning that, "the most important thing is to keep the 24-hour body clock stable. Getting up at the same time every morning, followed by exposure to bright light, is the most important change people can make." So, instead of feeding my anxiety, my Oura Ring also helped me implement a consistent time for bed and for waking up, which dramatically improved my sleep and readiness scores.

Mouth Taping Isn't For Everyone

One of the most talked about sleepmaxxing trends has to be mouth taping. The theory is that encouraging nasal breathing may reduce snoring and improve sleep quality. "If you breathe through the mouth, you get a dry mouth, a higher risk of sore throats and infections too," explains Bernath. Not only that, but mouth breathing pushes the jaw and tongue further back, increasing the risk of obstructive sleep apnoea, which, according to Bernath, is “a hugely underdiagnosed epidemic.” It occurs when the muscles in the throat relax too much during sleep, causing the airway to repeatedly narrow or collapse. “Each time this happens, the brain briefly wakes the person to reopen the airway, fragmenting sleep, often without them realising it. This cycle repeats throughout the night, often leaving people feeling tired despite spending enough time in bed,” adds Bernath.

I wasn’t sure I actually slept with my mouth open but I gave mouth taping a go just in case. However, I didn’t last long as it felt restrictive having my mouth taped shut, and by morning I’d wake up with it stuck to my sheet, having removed it in the night. The reason I kept taking it off could lie in the fact that for those of us with deviated septums (when the bone separating your nostrils is off centre), “mouth taping may not succeed, as the brain generally doesn't like breathing through a nostril that's too narrow," reveals Bernath. So, while he agrees it can be helpful, it only works if your anatomy allows for it.

Magnesium Boost

Oftentimes it’s hard to know if your supplements are working, especially if you’re taking a fair few. But I wasn’t taking anything at all when I added a dose of magnesium into my nightly wind-down routine. So, when I started noticing an improvement in my sleep, I was convinced that it was playing a major role.

“Magnesium is an essential mineral that helps regulate hundreds of processes throughout the body, including those involved in relaxing the nervous system, muscle function and preparing the body for sleep. It’s not a sleeping pill, but it does help the body to relax, which makes it easier to fall asleep,” explains Bernath. Not all forms of magnesium work in the same way, so for sleep it’s best to take magnesium (bis)glycinate as it combines magnesium with the amino acid glycine, which has calming properties of its own, and is less likely to cause digestive side effects than forms such as magnesium oxide or citrate.

I alternated between Elle Sera Magnesium Bisglycinate, from £28 and Artah Essential Magnesium, from £16.80, throughout my experiment. It didn't stop my night sweats or suddenly give me eight uninterrupted hours of sleep, but my Oura ring confirmed I was falling asleep quicker when taking it and I attribute that to how well it helped quieten my mental chatter at bedtime. I felt calmer, less physically restless and generally found it easier to drift off and stay asleep—I don’t go to bed without it now.

Skincare Designed for Sleep

Technically aligning your skincare with your body’s natural nighttime functions isn’t exactly sleepmaxxing, but rather skinmaxxing. However, I knew that by using what I’ve learnt about what’s happening to my skin while I sleep and then supporting my skin with some skincare switches, it would ultimately help me get my clear, even-toned, glowing complexion back faster.

“When deep sleep is consistently cut short, collagen production slows, cell renewal slows, and the skin's ability to repair daily micro-damage from UV or pollution falls behind. It's one of the reasons chronic poor sleep ages skin faster than almost any other lifestyle factor,” says Gonzalez-Fernandez. Add the impact on hormonal regulation that poor sleep has and this all translates into dull, dehydrated, pigmented, spotty, and wrinkled skin.

Gonzalez-Fernandez recommends retinoids, vitamin C, peptides, BHAs, AHAs, SPF and barrier repair actives like ceramides. At night, I kept things simple; I double-cleansed with the PCA Face Wash Oily/Problem, £39, which removes dirt, makeup, and excess oil while still being gentle on my barrier. I followed that with the Klira Special, from £59, a personalised prescription retinoid that’s combined with other actives to boost collagen production and speed up cell turnover. Come morning, I cleansed with the niacinamide-packed Vichy Fresh Cleansing Gel, £14, and followed this with the Sachi Skin Triphala Pigmentation Corrector, £90, to help even out my skin and get my glow back, thanks to anti-inflammatory and antibacterial Triphala, plus pigment-busting niacinamide and tranexamic acid. I then topped that with the Klira The Dayscript, from £66, which offers a full eight hours of sun protection, combined with additional personalised actives to support skin health. Finally, once a week I use the hydrating Kama Vanasara Rose Hydrating Mask, £46, and the Revision Triple Action Exfoliator, £80, to smooth, soften and brighten my skin.

The Verdict

So, did sleepmaxxing actually improve my skin? For me, the answer has to be a resounding yes. It took time, but the lines I’d developed around my eyes disappeared—note I think they were from dehydration rather than collagen loss, since my routine was already pretty stacked in collagen-boosting actives. The redness dissipated, my skin tone was more even, my skin was no longer as oily, and breakouts reduced in number and frequency.

I looked so much better, and I felt better too. I love that my Oura ring keeps me in the know regarding all things sleep, and I’m thrilled that adding magnesium to my routine has helped me doze off quicker.

But I can absolutely see why both Bernath and Oura believe the most important element of getting good sleep (and enough of it) is consistent timing—because sleeping at around the same time every night and waking up at the same time every morning (in accordance with my chronotype) has changed the game when it comes to my sleep and my skin.

Summer beauty has its hallmarks: glowy skin, flushed cheeks, and, of course, a bronzed complexion that tells the story of vacations and long, balmy days days spent outside. Of course, if you're applying as much SPF as you should (and you really should be), this often means mimicking a tan with the help of some bronzing products.

Well, that was until makeup artist and fashion week mainstay Fara Homidi told us that we should be "blonzing" instead. While the concept has been around for quite some time, the category felt a little outdated until Homidi stepped in.

The term refers to a product that performs like a blush but acts like a bronzer, and as the MUA explains, it's the ultimate step in a sun-chasing make-up look, minus the damage. "Using this product really completes my night-bronzed fantasy. It mimics how your skin looks in the evening after a full day spent out in the sun," she tells Marie Claire UK.

Of course, you could just as easily double up on your own bronzer and blush, but dedicated blonzers take the guesswork out of picking the right combination of colours and undertones for your skin. Homidi's blonzers, in particular, are formulated to suit all skin tones, from fair to deep.

How to Choose Your Shade of Blonzer

Picking the right blonzer depends on how dramatic a look you want, but the easiest way too choose is by bearing in mind the depth and pigment of the product at hand.

"Going for a darker blonzer shade, when you have a fair complexion, will give a beautiful berry flush, like Jennifer Connelly. Or a beige-pink, like my Nue, on a medium complexion will give more of a 'sun-kissed' Bella Hadid look," notes the MUA, adding that every skin tone can wear any of the shades—it just depends on how much of a 'sun-kissed' or 'sunburnt' look you want.

How to Apply Blonzer

Homidi explains that you can still use bronzer while blonzing—especially as most of the latter products have some shimmer in them. "My technique is to apply my Bronzer first in the areas the sun naturally touches: the forehead, outer perimeters of the face, and chin. Then apply the blonzer mainly on the inner parts of the face; high on your cheeks and nose (areas where you might have a slight sunburn) and finish with a light tap onto the forehead and chin to connect the pinkish flush to the Bronzer, so you can’t see where one begins and one ends.

And then, because blonzers tend to be very pigmented, it's important to prime the brush—a technique long beloved by MUAs. "Dip the brush into the product and swirl it in the palm of your hand to disperse it evenly into the bristles before it touches your complexion," advises Homidi. "When you apply the Blonzer after priming the brush, it allows you to slowly build in layers and gives you a soft focus finish that looks more lit-from-within."

More Blonzers to Try Now

The scalp was once regarded as a niche, unsexy corner of the haircare discussion—but in 2026, it is the conversation. As we know, each strand comes from a living follicle on the scalp, meaning that its condition can affect everything from growth, shedding and lustre. So, in tandem with the “skinitification” trend of hair, a booming market around scalp health has emerged. There have never been so many products addressing everything from thinning to density—two key issues that take root at the scalp.

But one area that is crucially neglected is the sun, the effect it has on our scalps, and hence everything that grows from it. “People often forget that the scalp is skin, and because it's covered by hair it's very much ‘out of sight, out of mind’,” Dr Sharon Wong, consultant dermatologist and hair specialist, explains. “However, the scalp is one of the most sun-exposed areas of the body and often doesn't receive the same attention as the face when it comes to sun protection.”

How Sun Exposure Affects the Hair

When exposed to the sun, UV radiation breaks down the proteins and lips that give hair its strength and structure, making it weaker, drier, more brittle and prone to breakage, the expert states. It also affects hair pigment, meaning natural hair can become lighter over the summer, while coloured or dyed hair tends to fade more quickly. In short, while we have collectively improved at applying facial sunscreen, it’s important to remember that our scalps are exposed to the same exact environmental stressors.

In fact, it’s critical, Dr Simon Jackson, Scientific Ambassador of Davines, comments. “Unlike skin, hair cannot repair itself once it has been damaged. Sun exposure also generates free radicals that contribute to oxidative stress, and this all compounds when you factor in salt water, chlorine and prolonged heat.”

Can the Sun Accelerate Scalp Ageing?

We have to factor in age here, too. As we get older, our scalps start to change: there’s collagen and elastin loss, reduced blood supply, increased inflammation, altered cell signalling, and declining stem cell activity, meaning that our follicles don’t function as well as they used to. This contributes to reduced and poorer hair growth.

“The scalp actually shows signs of ageing faster than many other areas of the body,” adds Dr Aamna Adel, consultant dermatologist and the founder of rhute. “Unlike facial skin, the scalp has relatively little subcutaneous fat, is constantly exposed to environmental stressors and receives cumulative UV damage over decades.” So, as the hair thins, and is more exposed in areas like the parting, the scalp becomes even more vulnerable.

The Skin Cancer Risk

Indeed, per Dr Wong, the head and neck are the most common sites for UV-related skin cancers. And while scalp melanomas, or cancerous moles, account for only six to seven per cent of all melanomas, they are associated with significantly poorer survival rates than others elsewhere on the body. This is in part because they’re detected later, as they are often hidden by hair.

“Repeated sunburn isn't just uncomfortable; it increases the risk of actinic damage and skin cancers over time," adds Dr Adel. "Over many years, that cumulative UV exposure increases the risk of developing precancerous changes such as actinic keratoses, which can progress to squamous cell carcinoma if left untreated." She notes that this can be worse amongst those who have thinning hair or age-related hair loss.

How to Protect Your Hair in the Sun

All experts conclude that the most effective way to protect your scalp is by seeking both physical and topical protection. But first things first: “A wide-brimmed hat or tightly woven cap provides far more reliable UV protection than relying on your hair alone,” states Dr Adel, “Particularly if you have a visible parting, finer hair or areas of thinning. Hair offers some protection, but it shouldn't be considered a substitute for sun protection.”

If your scalp is exposed, or wearing a hat isn’t practical, apply sunscreen along the parting, hairline and any areas where the scalp is visible. And as with any sunscreen, it needs to be reapplied if you’re spending prolonged periods outside, especially when sweating or swimming.

Dr Jackson helped develop Davines’ new SU range with this in mind; to care for the hair before, during and after sun exposure. “At the heart of the range is Bitter Orange (Citrus aurantium) Peel Extract. Naturally rich in antioxidant flavonoids, the extract helps protect the hair fibre against UV-induced oxidative stress while supporting softness and shine,” he says.

When it comes to the hair itself, Dr Adel adds that UV protective leave-in sprays or conditioners can help reduce related damage and colour fade. “If you're swimming, wetting the hair with fresh water beforehand and applying a leave-in conditioner or a nourishing pre-wash treatment, such as the rhute’s Triple Density Complex Pre-Wash Hair Oil, can help reduce how much chlorinated or salt water the hair absorbs, before you rinse thoroughly afterwards.” As ever, looking after both the scalp and the hair fibre gives the best long-term results.

Fragrance’s latest obsession takes root surprisingly close to home: the back garden. While the great outdoors has inspired perfumers for centuries, this new wave of scents draws on familiar scenes and aromas, including dew-dropped English meadows and the spoils of your allotment’s vegetable patch and herb garden.

It may sound odd if you’re partial to saccharine gourmands, but when scents like rosemary, rhubarb, and tomato are translated into olfactory form, they’re transformed. There’s an earthy groundedness, but also a sweetness, and if the composition leans herby, it can be invigoratingly botanical. There’s a freshness that’s nuanced, textured and completely transformative—they’re familiar, but with a hint of the surreal.

It reflects a broader shift, too: As a society, we’re becoming increasingly green-fingered. Research facilitated by Greenpeace, through freedom of information requests, found that the number of people waiting for an allotment space has almost doubled in the last 12 years. The charity chalked it up to the lingering effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as a desire to combat the mental load of climate change, and the cost of living crisis.

Niche perfume houses have been tapping into the movement for a while. First there was Loewe with its release of the now-iconic Tomato Leaves Candle in 2020. Next, Officine Universelle Buly released an extensive collection on the theme, The French Gardens, inspired by an antique collection of 18th-century botanical seeds and seedlings purchased by co-founder Ramdane Touhami. The six resulting fragrances feature unconventional, verdant notes of Scandinavian redcurrant, Peruvian tomato, Andean verbena and Ulu basil.

But this summer, the trend hit the mainstream. Just last month, Jo Malone debuted its limited-edition veggies collection: a trio of colognes evoking ripe beetroot, butternut, and carrot, with home products inspired by green tomato vine and tomato leaf.

So why now? “We’re seeing a shift away from fragrances that feel overly polished or overtly sweet, towards ones that feel alive and transportive,” explains the founder of niche, luxury fragrance brand, LUMIRA, Almira Armstrong. “Garden-inspired fragrances capture that beautifully. They evoke crushed herbs, warm leaves, citrus trees and sun-soaked greenery, creating the feeling of stepping into a living landscape rather than simply wearing perfume. People are craving authenticity and a stronger connection to nature. These fragrances feel restorative, sophisticated and quietly luxurious… They tell a story through atmosphere rather than obvious florals or gourmand notes.”

They’re also exceedingly wearable, adds Cherry Cheng, founder of fragrance brand Jouissance. “Green, aromatic, and vegetable notes tend to feel inherently genderless because they're rooted in nature and tend to sit outside traditional ideas of masculine and feminine perfumery.”

Most of this category taps into the everyday, so expect notes of tomato leaf, basil, mint, rosemary, thyme and cucumber. But there are others that evoke a mood, like sun- or rain-drenched grass, overgrown orchards, warm earth, and freshly cut greenery. These compositions rely heavily on familiar notes of petitgrain, neroli, vetiver and moss; they are just used differently. “They’re not meant to smell literally like vegetables,” Armstrong notes. “Instead, they recreate the freshness of stems, leaves and herbs warmed by the sun.”

Of course, we’ve also been drawn to these fecund scents because of the unprecedented heatwave that has gripped most of Western Europe. As the temperatures rise, people naturally gravitate towards fragrances that feel cooling, airy and refreshing, adds Armstrong. “Green notes, aromatic herbs and citrus all create that sensation without feeling heavy. Summer also heightens our memories of gardens, fresh produce and time spent outdoors,” she says. “Scent is closely connected to memory, so fragrances featuring basil, tomato leaf or citrus can instantly transport us to long lunches, Mediterranean holidays or afternoons spent in the garden.”

Over the past few years, tubing mascara has had a real revival. Beloved for its longevity, lengthening properties and easy removal (without any scrubbing!), these formulas are more popular than ever. There’s something super appealing about a mascara that stays put throughout the day without running or streaking, but that easily removes with water and light massage before bed. Brands including Merit, Revitalash and Maybelline have all launched new versions this year alone, and the trend shows no sign of slowing down.

Except now, it’s evolved. Given the explosive popularity of tubing mascaras, it’s no surprise that one brand—Tarte—has applied tubing technology to another eye product to create a new cult hero. The brand’s Tartelette Tubing Liquid Eyeliner follows in its sister mascara’s footsteps and promises to deliver a sharper, cleaner liquid line that stays put but also easily removes. So, how does this actually work, given the idea of a tubing mascara is that it contains water-resistant polymers that wrap around each individual lash?

I asked makeup artists for their thoughts on tubing liquid liners, and how, from their perspective, they see them working. Using Tarte’s formulation as a reference, Mezhgan Hussainy, Celebrity Makeup Artist & Co-Founder of Product Society, explained: “Unlike traditional eyeliners that rely primarily on waxes and pigments to adhere to the skin, tubing technology creates a flexible film that wraps around the surface and is designed to resist smudging, transferring, humidity, and oils. That's especially important around the eye area, where movement, tears, and natural oils can quickly break down makeup.”

Like tubing mascaras, celebrity makeup artist Joy Adenuga says the product is “water-resistant throughout the day but releases cleanly with warm water and gentle pressure without rubbing or harsh removers.” It’s a unique, fresh approach to eyeliner, and one that makeup artists are generally pretty excited to try. “As a celebrity makeup artist, I'm always looking for products that deliver longevity without sacrificing comfort, and tubing liners have the potential to do just that,” notes Hussainy.

How We Test

The Marie Claire UK team takes product testing seriously, with a commitment to delivering accurate, honest and genuinely helpful reviews for our readers. For this review, I applied Tarte's Tubing Eyeliner as part of my usual morning makeup routine and wore it throughout the day—including during an exercise class—without touching it up.

I assessed the ease of application, the precision of the applicator, pigment payoff and overall longevity, paying particular attention to whether the formula smudged, flaked or transferred. When it came to removal, I evaluated how easily it came off and whether it left behind any residue. Here are my findings...

First Impressions

I was so excited to try Tarte’s new formula because liquid eyeliner is a part of my regular makeup routine; I genuinely feel naked without it, so I am always looking for new favourites.

It’s worth noting, however, says Adenuga, that these formulas tend to be matte, “so if you're someone who layers or likes a smudgey liner, it will not work as well as a standard liquid or pencil formula.”

“I find this an interesting innovation and think it could benefit a lot of people, particularly those who struggle with smudging,” notes Adenuga. “It feels like a logical evolution from tubing mascaras and makes it useful for oily lids, sensitive eyes, and situations where touch-ups aren't always possible.” She adds that this could be brilliant for those who wear contact lenses, and for ‘frequent face-touchers,’ too.

There’s also potential for tubing liners to be a hit for mature skin. “What I'm most interested in seeing is how these formulas perform on mature eyelids with texture or laxity, since application and wear can be very different than on smoother skin,” comments Hussainy. “If they offer the same smudge-proof benefits we've come to expect from tubing mascaras while still gliding on effortlessly, I think they'll fill a real gap in the market.”

How to Apply

The product applies really well and creating shapes such as wings feels easy. I will say that I really understood what Adenuga meant when she noted how matte these formulas are likely to be; the liner was noticeably less glossy and wet, unlike many ‘regular’ liquid eyeliners I’m used to using. I even wore it during a hot pilates class and there was zero budging.

The Verdict

I’m also a serial face toucher, and so using a tubing design like this is definitely helpful. However, I’d be interested to see how long the product itself lasts and whether there’s a quicker dry-out rate, meaning less time between repurchasing.

Removal was very easy, which is a big thing for me. Sometimes at night I’m so lazy I end up leaving mascara and eyeliner excess on my lids that smudges onto my pillow overnight, but this melted off with ease with just water (see pics above, where I removed the ‘wing’ with just water and my finger). I can see why, therefore, this would be a clear winner for those with sensitive eyes.

All in all, I was pretty impressed with the product and think Tarte has tapped into something here that’s bound to become a trend, with more brands giving these a go.

Few haircuts have achieved first-name status.‘The Rachel’ arrived in the early seasons of Friends, when Rachel Green’s shoulder-skimming explosion of layers became almost as famous as the character herself—and launched a thousand salon appointments in the process. Even today, the millennial style continues to inspire fresh interpretations—the latest being Gigi Hadid’s glossy, swishy reinterpretation. Her longer layers, sweeping face-framing sections, and softly curved ends retain the bounce that made the original so appealing, minus the ’90s cosplay. As her hairstylist, Dimitris Giannetos put it on his Instagram post, “I wanted to create the updated version of the C-cut, giving Gigi some Love Layers (aka heart shape layers)!” So how can we recreate this new take on a classic? I asked leading hairdressers Samantha Cusick and Jay Birmingham to explain how to wear the style now.

The 'Modern Rachel'

While the original relied on short, visible layers and a bouncy, rounded blow-dry, the new interpretation is altogether subtler. “The modern Rachel is all about softer glamour,” explains celebrity hairdresser Jay Birmingham. “The original was built around short, choppy layers and lots of volume, whereas today’s version is sleeker, longer and much more wearable. The layers are more blended, the movement is softer, and the finish is glossy rather than fluffy.”

That distinction is what makes the revival feel fresh. Rather than reproducing Jennifer Aniston’s haircut section by section, the aim is to capture its buoyant, face-framing effect. “It’s less about recreating a ’90s hairstyle and more about capturing that effortless bounce and healthy-looking shine,” says Birmingham.

Cusick believes the resurgence also reflects our renewed appetite for ’90s beauty, along with a broader shift towards haircuts that create movement. “We’re obsessed with volume, with movement, with that lived-in layered quality that looks effortless but is actually really considered,” she says. “The original Rachel had all of those things; it was just styled in a more structured, high-maintenance way for the time.”

What to Ask for at the Salon

The words ‘The Rachel’ may conjure a very specific image, so arriving armed with a reference to the longer, contemporary version is sensible. The most important point to communicate is that you want movement while preserving weight and fullness through the ends. “I’d ask for long, seamless layers that create movement without taking away too much weight,” advises Birmingham. “Soft face-framing pieces around the cheekbones or jawline will open up the face while keeping the overall look elegant and modern.” The layering should blend into the haircut rather than create obvious steps. “The beauty of this cut is that it should move naturally, so the layering needs to feel invisible rather than obvious,” he adds.

“The OG version was very much built for thicker, straighter hair, where you could get that signature volume and flick”, explains Cusick. “The 2026 version works with so many more hair types because the layering technique has evolved significantly.” That’s why the modern Rachel can be adapted to a much broader range of hair types than its predecessor. Layers remove bulk and encourage movement in thick hair, while naturally wavy textures lend themselves particularly well to the softer, undone finish.

Fine hair requires a more restrained approach. Too many layers can leave the ends looking sparse, so maintaining density is more important than chasing dramatic volume. This also makes the cut a compelling option for midlife hair that has become finer, drier or less dense.

“This style is actually brilliant for midlife hair because it creates the illusion of movement and fullness without relying on lots of short layers,” says Birmingham. “I’d recommend keeping the layers longer and softer to maintain density through the ends, while using styling techniques to build lift around the crown.”

Cusick agrees that precision matters: “On finer hair, you do need a skilled hand because you want to add layers that create movement without removing too much weight, but when it’s done right, it’s incredible.” Very curly hair can also carry the shape, although its layers must be positioned with shrinkage in mind. A stylist experienced in cutting curls will be best placed to tailor the look.

How to Create The Modern Rachel

The secret to Gigi’s finish lies in balancing root lift with smooth, glossy lengths. Begin with heat protectant (my go-to is always Moroccanoil Perfect Defence, £28, then work in small sections, directing the hair away from the face. Allowing each section to cool before touching it helps the shape last longer. “My biggest tip is to style the hair away from the face, then let each section cool before brushing it through gently with your fingers,” says Birmingham. “That gives you soft movement rather than overly defined curls.”

A blow-dry brush or air styler will create the initial lift, but a straightener can be used to refine the shape, bend the face-framing sections and smooth the ends. I used the new ghd Sculpt Styler, £369, which promotes shine and discourages frizz thanks to its fancy Heat-adapt technology. I have layers but usually they just blend in, this allowed me to add intentional cool-girl kinks through the front sections and mid-lengths. “That face-framing quality that made the original so iconic is still completely there, but it's softer, more undone, as Cusick says, “more like your hair just fell that way rather than something you carefully constructed. You’re not trying to recreate that very polished ’90s flick; you’re taking the spirit of it and making it feel like 2026,” she explains. I’ve recently discovered Cécred's Heat Activated Silk Glaze, £32, and it's a game-changer for creating a glass-like finish and almost locking in the style you’ve created. I’ve been using JVN Hair Perfect FlexHold Strengthening Flexible Hairspray, £27, to give hair extra gravitas and keep tufty flyaways in check. If the ends of my hair are starting to look a little worse for wear, Virtue’s Healing Oil, £44, is a godsend at keeping flicks looking the chef’s kiss.

The main pitfalls are over-layering, excessive teasing and ends that have been curled too deliberately. As Birmingham puts it: “Today’s version is all about healthy-looking hair with effortless bounce and natural movement.”

Since writing this article, I have found myself wearing this new version of The Rachel more and more. Best everyday formula

La Roche-Posay almost single-handedly saw me through my severely acne-riddled teenage years, and it was the first brand that made a noticeable difference to my breakouts and complexion. I've trusted the products for years, and this SPF is one of my top picks for anyone acne-prone. It's designed for oily skin types, including skin prone to blemishes and sensitivity, with a mattifying effect that will prevent shininess throughout the day. It has a very watery, milky formula that turns invisible on the skin and feels weightless too. Despite being matte, it doesn't feel at all drying or chalky on the skin, and it provides a smoothing base for makeup application on top. It's a true all-rounder for acne-prone skin with impressive SPF 50.

Best oil control

SkinCeuticals has slowly but surely become one of my holy grail brands. Yes, the products are on the pricier side, but I've yet to encounter one that isn't worth every penny. This SPF has a thicker formula more like a mineral sunscreen, but it's still extremely easy to blend in and it doesn't leave a white cast. It feels more matte than the La-Roche Posay SPF, both to apply and on the skin, but it still sits comfortably and doesn't dry me out even though my skin isn't excessively oily. It works wonders at keeping shine at bay, and it's perfect for humid weather and preventing makeup from sliding around on the face. If you have particularly oily acne-prone skin, this will make a very noticeable difference to your complexion.

Most affordable

Although this SPF is designed with oily skin in mind, it's also suitable for normal skin and isn't excessively mattifying. It has a smooth, milky formula that's lightweight, breathable, and fast-absorbing for an invisible finish that primes the skin for makeup. One of my favourite things about this SPF is that it contains niacinamide, which has always worked brilliantly for preventing breakouts in my skin. It keeps oil to a minimum all day and won't clog pores either.

Most hydrating

Another SPF containing niacinamide, Aesop's lotion formula is both hydrating and nourishing. It's my top recommendation if your skin needs some TLC due to any tightness or discomfort, particularly if you apply any drying nighttime skincare for spots. It functions just like a regular day moisturiser with the addition of sun protection, but it doesn't leave the skin greasy or shiny. NB: this SPF isn't fragrance-free, so if you don't respond well to fragrance, you may want to try another formula. However, it has never caused me to break out or have any irritation.

Best for severe acne

If you have very acne-prone skin that needs a lot of care and attention, Dr Sam's Daily Sunscreen is a foolproof option. It's specifically designed for blemish-prone skin, with a soft-focus primer-like finish that applies like a moisturiser. It's fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and formulated with niacinamide to brighten and boost the skin. It's an extremely minimalist SPF suitable for all skin types, and it perfectly balances sun protection with a comfortable feel that provides a skin-like finish with no added shine. It's a true all-rounder that will work for anyone with acne-prone skin.

Best SPF primer

For my skin, I've found that less is more—particularly in the daytime. The best way to keep my acne at bay is not going overboard under my makeup, and Charlotte Tilbury's SPF 50 primer offers exactly that. It kills two birds with one stone with priming and sun protection, as well as providing pollution defence to further halt skin stressors that can cause breakouts. It has a very subtle tint that leaves the skin with a beautiful glow and a weightless feel that's comfortable on the face. It also hydrates without a shiny finish, which makes for smooth makeup application.

Best lightweight SPF

The clue is in the name with Beauty Pie's SPF 50: it's a truly invisible, lightweight, watery formula that blends in with minimal effort. I've used it for years, and it has never failed me or caused blemishes. It's completely non-greasy and also acts as a primer, so you can expect a skin-like finish with natural radiance and no shine. The advanced UV filters also work to fight sunlight-induced inflammation, which can make red, painful breakouts less troublesome. With no white cast, it's suitable for all skin tones and requires minimal blending to sink in.

When the temperature rises, so does our hair. Ponytails, slicked-back buns and polished knots are summer’s chicest form of heat management—keeping lengths off sticky necks while making even the most thrown-together outfit look intentional. So, can a tight ponytail really cause a headache?

First, the reassuring news: wearing a slicked-back ponytail or bun occasionally is unlikely to leave you with more than mild, short-lived discomfort. The tension is real, though—when hair is pulled tightly at the root, it can trigger what's sometimes called a "ponytail headache," a dull, tight sensation caused by strain on the scalp's nerve endings. When this tension is happening for prolonged periods, a slicked-back ponytail is your everyday go-to style, and it can cause more lasting damage.

The keywords here are repeated and prolonged. According to Cos Sakkas, global creative director at TONI&GUY, regularly pulling hair into a tight ponytail or top knot places pressure on the roots and can, over time, create tension—particularly around the temples, where that headache-like sensation is often felt. "The real issue isn't the occasional sleek style," agrees Proctor. "It's wearing your hair tightly in the same position every day without giving your scalp a break."

Jade Proctor, co-owner, senior director and colour specialist at Scullion & Scot, agrees: "Traction alopecia is a medically recognised form of hair loss caused by repeated, prolonged tension on the hair follicles over months or years—not by wearing a sleek ponytail for a special occasion or now and then."

In other words, there's no need to retire the slicked-back bun entirely. The way you wear it—and how often—is what matters.

Know when your hair is asking for a break

A snatched ponytail might look immaculate, but it shouldn’t feel uncomfortable. Itching, tenderness or redness around the hairline can all indicate that a style is placing too much strain on the follicles. Look closely at the temples, too: short, snapped strands can easily be mistaken for new growth.

“If your ponytail is giving you a headache at the end of the day, it’s a sign it’s too tight,” says Proctor. Sakkas agrees that a hairstyle should never make the hairline hurt or visibly pull at the skin. That familiar soreness when you finally take your hair down? It’s often a sign that the weight has been concentrated in one place for too long. If you notice discomfort, don’t try to push through it in the name of a cleaner finish. Take the style down, loosen it or wear your hair loose for a few days. Sleek should feel secure, not punishing.

Switch up your style—and spread the load

Wearing your ponytail at exactly the same height each day repeatedly pulls on the same areas, so a little variation can make a meaningful difference. Alternate a high ponytail with a low one at the nape, swap a sculpted bun for a softer knot and build loose or textured styles into the rotation. For thick or heavy hair, Sakkas recommends dividing the ponytail into two sections—one above the other—to distribute its weight more evenly. The technique can help alleviate pressure at the base while creating a fuller, more dimensional-looking tail.

And resist the urge to pull your hair tighter each time a flyaway appears. “Sleek doesn’t have to mean the tightest,” says Proctor. “The best-looking styles always come from healthy, conditioned hair and using the right tools and styling products.” A smoothing cream or leave-in treatment can create polish before the hair is secured, while hairspray and shine mist will deal with flyaways and add that expensive, glassy finish. Unless you deliberately want a hard, fixed effect, Sakkas suggests stepping away from heavy gel and letting a smoothing formula do the work instead.

Be smarter about brushes, bobbles and bedtime

The smallest details can make the biggest difference in breakage. Worn-out bobbles create friction and uneven tension, so replace them once they become stretched, rough or damaged. Avoid ordinary rubber bands entirely; soft, snag-free elastics, satin scrunchies and hook elastics are gentler alternatives.

Your brush matters, too. Proctor recommends choosing a good-quality brush that glides through the hair without catching, while Sakkas advises using a comb rather than a brush on wet hair. Hair is more vulnerable when wet, making it easier for bristles to snag, stretch and snap the strands.

Finally, however flawless your bun still looks at bedtime, take it down. “Always give your hair and scalp a chance to relax overnight,” says Proctor. Sleeping in a tight style adds pillow friction to an already stressed hairline. If you need to tie your hair back at night, Sakkas recommends a loose satin scrunchie and a silk or satin pillowcase.

The happy updo shopping list

Despite the sunny weather we’ve been experiencing, my hunt for a post-holiday glow continues. As a beauty editor, I live by the belief that it’s my job to try every bronzer on the market, from powders to creams. But despite all that rigorous testing, only a handful of products have made the cut—it’s rare to find a powder that blends seamlessly, and I’ve found that many cream formulas can end up looking muddy on my complexion.

Enter the water bronzer. This new category has proved to be the solution to all my bronzer-related woes. They’re exactly as they sound: incredibly lightweight and effortlessly blendable, offering a wash of colour with enough pigment to create a believable bronzed look. Despite being a relatively new concept in the beauty world, there are already several different options on the market. First up is the one that got me hooked in the first place: Victoria Beckham Beauty Colour Wash.

This long-wearing, watercolour-inspired formula has a slow-setting stain, giving you enough time to blend the watery texture with your fingers or a brush for a diffused flush that lasts all day. And it feels like water because, in part, it is: the formula is made with seawater sourced from the rocky cliffs of northern France for mineral-rich hydration. It comes with a dropper for precise application, and what I love most is how seamlessly it melts into the skin. There are no harsh lines, just a fresh bronzy glow that looks completely natural, as though it's come from within. This has true, I-just-stepped-off-a-plane energy.

But that's not all… There are a handful of other water bronzers on the market right now. Read on to see how they compare.

“When you dupe, you dupe the consumer,” Charlotte Tilbury told BBC News when asked for her thoughts on other brands making similar products to her own for a fraction of the price. “I have looked at those dupes and they do not perform the way that my products do”.

If you search “Charlotte Tilbury dupes”, you’ll find a £4 drugstore lipstick, housed in a rose-gold ribbed tube almost identical to Tilbury’s now-iconic lipsticks. There’s also a £12 pressed powder that not only looks similar to Tilbury’s Flawless Filter Powder but also uses the same “Flawless” name. These are just two of the examples I found.

As a beauty editor, I understand Tilbury’s frustrations, but by speaking out, Tilbury has sparked a hot debate on the Internet. Creator Nina Pool posted a video on Instagram that has over 1 million views, claiming that she researched the manufacturers of Charlotte Tilbury products and found that her lip liners are “made in the same factory” as Kiko Milano's. However, while Charlotte Tilbury’s bestselling Lip Cheat Lip Liner is £22, Kiko Milano's is £7.99. You might jump to the conclusion that Kiko is duping Tilbury—after all, the cheaper product is the dupe, right?—but Pool goes on to say that Kiko Milano launched in 1997 and is decades older than Tilbury’s brand. So, who’s duping who?

The answer, however, isn’t so black-and-white. First, it requires a debunking of the age-old ‘same factory, same formula’ myth. While it is true that there are only a certain number of cosmetics factories in the world, and many brands use the same ones, it doesn’t necessarily follow that their products are identical.

“If you’re an affordable brand and you’ve been given a specific cost to stick to, there’s only so much you can do to truly replicate the performance and durability of a high-end product from a luxury brand, which likely has a higher cost price to work with,” an industry product developer tells me, who also asked to remain anonymous.

“Imagine you’re trying to recreate the performance of a premium eyeshadow palette, but you can only sell yours at retail for £15,” they say. “If your version lacks pigment or smoothness, you can make adjustments, but it almost always increases your manufacturing cost. As your cost price goes up, your profit margins go down, which isn’t sustainable for most brands unless they’re willing to increase the retail price”.

Whenever we think of profit margins, we often associate them with luxury brands, but every company has one, and those margins are going to be incredibly tight when your retail price is just £4. However, is every premium-priced brand really spending all its money on formulas to give the best possible product, rather than maximising its profit?

Sadly not, as my insider knows too well. “After overseeing a production line, I can say there are definitely cases in which some brands are charging higher prices for low-cost formulas. You’re paying for the name rather than an innovative or prestige product”.

I have to agree. My job requires me to trial multiple brands, and there have been many times I’ve swatched a highlighter or tested a foundation and immediately known there is a drugstore product that performs way better. It’s also happened at the other end of the spectrum, like when makeup artist brand Pat McGrath Labs first launched their eyeshadows and I willingly paid over £100 for a palette because the sparkle and sheen were truly like nothing I had ever seen before.

Makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes is adept at using brands at all price points to achieve premium results, but now that she has her own brand, KJH, she has even more insight into the dupe industry. “I think dupe culture is fine when you are inspired by a formula, and you want to bring a slightly different version to market to fill a void, because there are tweaks you can make on things like finish, texture or shade range, to make that formula more affordable,” she says. “I think in Charlotte Tilbury’s case, however, it is often unfair because there are all these brands that are ripping off her packaging. They are mimicking her brand identity and trying to dupe the customer into thinking they’re actually buying a Charlotte Tilbury product.”

This raises an important distinction between products from different brands that are made in the same factory, and a brand that is outright (sometimes shamelessly) copying another brand’s entire DNA, from its formulas to its product names to its packaging. Surely, that’s duping?

Something that I think encompasses this point is one of Tilbury’s most beloved products: Hollywood Flawless Filter. At its launch in 2018, there was initial confusion. Is it a foundation? Is it a primer? Is it a highlighter? Turns out, it can be all of the above. In fact, this multitasking glow booster became so popular that it created an entirely new product genre. Fast-forward to today, and every drugstore brand has its own version. The clear distinction is that none of these products positions their value by pretending to be Charlotte Tilbury products. Yes, they may have drawn inspiration from Flawless Filter, but they have their own identity, names and marketing.

Take Rimmel’s Multi-Tasker Better Than Filters. The bottle and graphics are different to Tilbury’s and the language used to describe it is unique. Rimmel’s gives a really natural, sun-kissed glow, but I also find its consistency much thinner, which means I use more product. However, at around £10, it’s definitely a more affordable alternative to Tilbury’s £40 original.

Ultimately, perhaps we've become too quick to label everything a dupe. There's nothing wrong with brands taking inspiration from one another - that's how innovation evolves and competition only benefits consumers. But there's a huge difference between creating an affordable alternative and profiting off another brand’s success.

There’s one question I’m asked more than almost any other: Why does my hair never look as good as it does when I leave the salon? The answer isn’t because your hairdresser has a magic pair of hands. It’s because we’re thinking about the process, not just the finished result. A great blow-dry begins long before you pick up a hairdryer.

The truth is, whether I’m in the salon, backstage at Fashion Week, or styling someone for a red-carpet event, my priority is always the same: healthy hair. Hair that is well cared for has better elasticity, more movement and responds far better to styling. One of the biggest misconceptions I hear daily is that styling products damage hair. On the contrary, when used correctly, they actually protect the hair, improve longevity and allow you to use less heat.

With that in mind, here's how to recreate a salon blow-dry at home, every time.

Start with the scalp

The best blow-dries begin with a really clean scalp. Many people focus on washing the lengths but neglect the roots. Product buildup, excess oil, and pollution all affect how hair behaves. A clean scalp creates lift from the root, meaning your blow-dry lasts longer before falling flat.

I also encourage introducing a regular scalp scrub into your routine to remove buildup and create the perfect foundation for styling. Healthy hair always starts with a healthy scalp.

Preparation is everything

The salon difference is rarely what happens at the end—it’s what happens at the beginning. Always remove as much moisture as possible before you even think about styling. Hair should be around 80% dry before introducing a brush.

Next comes product layering. You don’t need lots of products—you simply need the right ones. I always think in four stages: protection, performance, polish and preservation. The importance of patience

One of the biggest differences between salon and home styling is patience. Hairdressers work in clean, manageable sections. Heat isn't the (only) answer

One of the biggest myths in hairdressing is that hotter always means better. In reality, excessive heat can compromise the hair's condition, roughening the cuticle and making it harder for your style to hold over time. Instead, opt for a medium heat setting paired with consistent tension as you dry. It's far kinder to the hair, delivers a smoother finish with more shine, and helps your blow-dry maintain its shape for much longer.

Never skip the cooling stage

This is probably the biggest salon secret of all. Hair doesn't hold its shape because it was heated—it holds its shape because it cooled in position. Whether you're using a round brush, a hot brush or rollers, resist the temptation to touch your hair too soon and let each section cool completely before moving on. That cooling process is what locks in the shape, giving you longer-lasting volume, bounce and movement.

Hot weather doesn't have to ruin your blow dry

Humidity isn’t your enemy—poor preparation is. Before leaving the house, make sure the hair is completely dry. Any remaining moisture allows humidity to enter the hair shaft, creating frizz and reducing longevity.

Avoid constantly touching your hair throughout the day, too. Hands transfer moisture and natural oils much faster than most people realise. A lightweight finishing oil and a quick refresh with a brush are often all you need.

The tools I swear by

Great styling starts with great tools. Professional tools don’t do the work for you—but they certainly make achieving salon-quality results much easier.

We can all remember what got us into collagen. Maybe it was the edible gummies or liquid gold drinks marketed to us on social media, or perhaps the topical serums that promised rejuvenation from the outside in. Injectable-wise, biostimulators developed in recent years – including Sculptra and Radiesse – are said to restore our collagen levels over time in a more comprehensive way, too. But it seems we’re never quite satisfied, always looking for the next best thing to restore our levels for youth and bounce.

Case in point: human tissue-derived treatments (known as human Acellular Dermal Matrix, or hADM), which are reportedly growing rapidly in South Korea. These use a collagen-rich 'extracellular matrix' derived from human skin, which is then formulated into an injectable for areas of the face, such as under the eyes.

But whose skin is the collagen used in these treatments coming from? Is it safe? And above that, is it ethical? There are plenty of unknowns when it comes to this controversial new procedure, not least what it says about our relationship with regenerative aesthetics and where it's headed in future.

What are 'human collagen treatments', and how do they work?

"Collagen is the main structural protein in our skin. It is what keeps it firm and bouncy, and it is the thing that naturally drops off as we age, which is why we start to see fine lines, crepiness, sagging and a loss of volume," explains Dr Christine Hall, Aesthetic Doctor at Taktouk Clinic and K-beauty expert. The aim of most collagen-based injectables, therefore, is to restore collagen levels for youth, longevity and overall skin health.

Treatments such as Elravie RE2O are reportedly set to be the next generation of regenerative collagen-stimulating procedures—notably because they use a collagen-rich 'extracellular matrix' derived from real human skin rather than from animals or synthetic, lab-grown alternatives. Usually the process goes something like this: skin is donated (usually from screened deceased donors), living cells are removed, DNA, blood vessels and other cellular material are removed, and what's left becomes an 'extracellular matrix' (ECM) that, once sterilised and ground into smaller particles, can be injected. The ECM is made up of collagen, elastin, proteins, and proteoglycans.

Lee Joon, MD, PhD, Medical Director at DOD Dermatology Clinic performs the treatment at his clinic in Seoul. He notes that for this procedure, "the mechanism is biostimulation, not volumising—it recruits host fibroblasts and induces neocollagenesis rather than merely filling space." This means results are focused on skin health and longevity rather than creating volume as filler does. While he makes clear that this kind of treatment isn't exactly 'replacing' filler (they do different things, after all), there's been a clear uptake in interest: "At our own clinic, usage has been climbing sharply relative to other skin boosters—for improving skin texture, fine lines, and pore refinement, and for softening dark circles."

Are these actually safe (or ethical)?

Here's where things get blurred, both in terms of safety and ethical implications.

To begin, it's important to note that human tissue-derived ECM treatments, such as Elravie RE2O, are very new to the market and not yet approved in many countries (primarily due to regulatory reasons). There have been very few human studies conducted so far on the safety and efficacy of the approach, with this paper being the most notable. Often referred to as the 'split-face' study, this study had 20 participants receive an injectable human collagen treatment on one side of their face and hyaluronic acid (HA) on the other. Results showed that the collagen-treated side improved skin across several metrics, including elasticity, hydration, and barrier function, compared with the HA-treated side.

That said, this experiment involved a very small cohort, and it only followed participants for 20 weeks following their procedures, meaning we don't yet have long-term data to support the narrative that this could be some 'game-changer' in injectables. And, one of the study's authors served as an advisor on the development of Elravie Re2O at the parent company, L&C Bio Co., Ltd.

There are also ethical considerations regarding these kinds of treatments. Korean classification rules mean products derived from donated human tissue often sit in something of a regulatory grey area. Dr Lee Joon says: "In Korea, these products are classified as 'human tissue,' not medical devices. Human tissue can be supplied to clinics without per-product approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), whereas a medical device requires product-specific approval for its intended use and indications. This classification gap explains both the rapid spread and the current controversy."

For donors, too, there is the question of whether they knew (or fully understood) that their future skin donation could include cosmetic use—although L&C Bio’s chairman has previously said that Elravie RE20 uses only overseas donated human tissue for which consent for cosmetic use has been obtained.

However, as more ECM products enter the market, there have been issues with clarity and communication in some clinics. "There is a duty to disclose the raw-material origin, yet some clinics use euphemisms ('premium collagen')," says Dr Lee Joon, which can understandably feel confusing, unclear, and not fully truthful.

Why are they becoming so popular in South Korea?

The rise in popularity of collagen treatments is generally linked to the way aesthetics is heading as a whole: there's a focus on regeneration and skin health, rather than on obvious filling or volume. But now, new technologies and innovations are advancing alongside this desire for more effective regenerative treatments.

In Korea, demand for collagen regeneration has, in many cases, overtaken that for more 'traditional' injectable treatments such as hyaluronic acid fillers. Dr Lee Joon adds that "fatigue with filler complications" plus a sense of “human-derived = natural” has resulted in a "K-beauty premium narrative" for these newer treatments.

Could these treatments be coming to the UK?

As mentioned, this is still an area of cosmetic aesthetics that is massively in its infancy, even over in South Korea, where it's being used. It's also been a rather controversial point of contention for the medical world, so there are plenty of barriers for these kinds of treatments to overcome before they can become available in the UK (or if they ever will).

"This is a complex area, especially concerning the regulatory pathway for treatments involving donated human tissue/skin products for injectables in the UK, as they would need to go through rigorous assessment with the MHRA [Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency] as they'll be classified as medicines," comments Kam Kaur from The Cosmetic Regulator. "I don't see the MHRA approving human tissue/skin products for use in the UK, though, so any clinic offering this is likely to be non-compliant."

"The UK faces a much higher bar under the HTA (Human Tissue Authority) and MHRA for cadaver-derived tissue used in cosmetic injection," agrees Dr Lee Joon. "Expect rhCollagen, PLLA, PDRN, and exosome biostimulators to lead in the UK/EU instead."

As the doctor notes, there are plenty of other commonly used (and potentially less controversial) collagen-stimulating treatments you can have here. These include biostimulators such as polynucleotides, Sculptra, and Radiesse, as well as radiofrequency approaches such as Morpheus8. Also evolving is recombinant collagen, which is produced in a lab using genetically engineered cells rather than extracted from human or animal tissue. For many, this may feel like a safer, more ethical injectable alternative for the future.

You should always choose a qualified practitioner who is recommended and has expertise and experience in the chosen treatment.

In the midst of these heatwaves, I want my skin to be as protected from UV rays as possible. That's why I love a multi-tasking foundation with SPF that can provide an extra barrier when I'll be spending several hours in the sun.

However, it's important to understand that SPF in foundation may not always be as effective as a regular SPF. That's primarily because we don't tend to apply nearly as thick a layer of foundation as we do sunscreen, meaning your skin won't be quite as protected. That's why I like to apply a lightweight SPF or SPF for under makeup underneath my foundation, so I can be sure my skin is fully prepped for the weather.

But when it comes to the winter months and the UV index is much lower, I often opt for one of these formulas alone for their 2-in-1 appeal. Best foundations with SPF, tried & tested

I will never stop raving about the Beauty Of Joseon Daily Tinted Fluid. Despite being tinted and offering the right amount of coverage to combat redness and uneven skin tone, it's actually a sunscreen first and a foundation second—meaning it really will protect the skin. It has a very watery consistency that blends like a dream, and it gives a hydrating boost that offers radiance too. I have a few acne scars to contend with, and it covers them beautifully and doesn't melt away in the heat. For me, it's the ideal everyday formula that feels weightless but really does even the skin and give a healthy, natural glow.

If you're on the hunt for a full coverage foundation with a high SPF, I've yet to find a formula better than RMS. It covers virtually all of my blemishes and discolouration, providing a blurring effect across the skin—with the addition of SPF 50. A little of this goes a long way, so it's one I like to layer with a regular sunscreen. Despite its high coverage, it doesn't feel thick or uncomfortable on the skin, instead acting more like a thicker tinted moisturiser. Containing a blend of niacinamide, marigold flower extract, jojoba seed oil and ashwagandha, it also smooths the skin, controls excess oils, and promotes radiance. A true all-rounder for the summer months.

I'm yet to encounter a base product more waterproof than this. Whether you're jumping in and out of the pool or need something to contend with sweat, Shiseido's Sports BB won't budge. Despite being lightweight, it offers impressive coverage that eradicates my need for concealer, and it's easy to blend with a brush or just with your hands. It has a fairly matte finish, but it also provides some radiance that keeps the skin fresh and healthy. With high SPF 50 and a quick-drying finish, it's my favourite to take on holiday when I want one base product that can do it all.

Mineral sunscreens are some of the best at protecting the skin because they get to work instantly—no sinking in time required. Merit's The Uniform is one of the very best mineral formulas that offers foundation-like coverage too. Although it's billed as a sheer coverage product, I find that it does a brilliant job at covering redness and uneven skin tone, even when I'm having a few breakouts. It's another base product that feels comfortable and light on the skin thanks to how easily it blends, and it has a gorgeous skin-like finish that is neither too matte nor too shiny. Plus, it's non-comedogenic and oil-free, making it suitable for acne-prone skin too.

A skincare-makeup hybrid, Laura Mercier's tinted moisturiser with SPF 30 is one of my most worn base products of all time. Although it promises sheer-light coverage, it's another one that works brilliantly at evening skin tone and masking darker spots—and the formula is buildable, so you can get more coverage if you need it. But my favourite thing about it is how hydrating it is, leaving the skin perfectly dewy and luminous. It's completely weightless, but works to soothe the skin which is a welcome treat in hot weather. It never clings to or accentuates any drier patches, and it stays put throughout the day.

Powder foundations seem to have fallen out of favour in recent years, but I'm here to tell you that they should not be dismissed. I've been using this bareMinerals formula since I was a teenager, and I'm always pleasantly surprised by the coverage and finish. You might expect it to give a dull, matte look, but it's extremely radiant and blurring with a skin-like appearance. Most unexpectedly, it has incredible coverage that conceals even angry red blemishes—perhaps better than some liquid formulas. It works wonders for oily skin, but the breathable formula means it suits normal and combination skin too. It's a mineral SPF 15, so I recommend layering it with a higher SPF in the summer for optimum protection.

I'm yet to try an Hourglass product that I don't get along with, and this is one of the best foundations with SPF if you want radiance, coverage, and protection. It has a slightly tackier formula than other liquid foundations straight out of the tube, but it blends like butter and gives medium coverage that doesn't crease or transfer—essential in hot weather. It also benefits the skin as you wear it; as well as SPF 30, it uses Advanced Hydra-Smoothing Technology (a blend of hyaluronic microspheres) to lock in moisture while visibly improving skin texture. A lighter layer is ideal for daytime wear, but I also love it for building coverage for full glam occasions. The result is a truly flawless, glowy finish with zero cakiness.

“Claude, fix my face.” That was not the prompt that I, or rather, my boyfriend, gave an AI platform, but it decided to enhance me anyway. A few weeks ago, my partner was taking a photo of me when a woman strolled past, walking a dalmatian. “I should've asked to borrow her dog,” I quipped, as I too was bedecked in spots. “Stick out your arm like you're holding a leash,” he replied. I didn't give it much thought, but within minutes, he'd uploaded the photo to an AI platform, and back came a rendered image of me holding a dalmatian.

He presented the image to me, perhaps expecting me to be impressed by the speed with which this relatively new tech could update my image when, only a short while ago, it would have taken someone experienced in Photoshop to create it. But the first thing I noticed wasn't the dog; it was my face.

Without prompting, the AI had given me a beaming smile with perfectly straight, white teeth. My cheekbones were higher, my face smoothed out, my eyebrows better groomed. It still looked like me, but I guess the intention was to show a 'better' version of me, when all that had been requested was for a spotted dog to be added in.

Later, when I told friends about this odd experience, they suggested I prompt the AI further, turning me into Cruella de Vil. What came back was an even more yassified version of me: the smile tighter, the skin tauter, even if a dodgy wig did crown the look.

I thought again of this incident, when Meta's latest AI rollout, which has since been pulled, prompted a flurry of concern. During my afternoon doomscroll, my feed became awash with the news that users would be able to generate AI images using other people's likenesses, with news reports rushing to show people how to opt out. The fury of users was so widespread that Meta made the unusual decision to reverse this feature; posting on their newsroom that: "We've heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available." Much of the conversation rightly centred on consent, ownership and the implications of AI-generated versions of ourselves.

But my mind kept returning to a different question, because before AI can manipulate our images, it first has to decide what we should look like. I thought back to yet another conversation I'd had, this time with Nikki Lilly, who told me what it feels like to have strangers on the internet use AI to manipulate your face. Again, supposedly to "fix" her, or, more specifically, her facial difference.

Though the severity and mental health implications varied wildly, in both cases, no one had asked for a makeover.

For my part, there was no prompt requesting whiter teeth, smoother skin or more sculpted cheekbones. Yet the AI seemed to assume those were improvements worth making anyway. It wasn't simply following instructions; it was making aesthetic decisions on my behalf.

That might sound trivial. After all, we've spent years voluntarily downloading beauty filters and smoothing apps. But there's an important difference between choosing to alter your appearance and having an AI decide to do it for you, especially given that there's an entire cottage industry sprouting up which allows users to upload their image to AI platforms that will then suggest—and later sell—beauty tweakments. Qoves, a facial aesthetics platform that uses AI and computer vision to analyse users' facial features and provide personalised appearance assessments and recommendations based on aesthetic research, has 1.1 million followers on Instagram alone.

The more I spoke to experts, as well as friends who’d had similar experiences (unkempt eyebrows seems to be an Achilles heel for AI), the more I realised my experience wasn't just an odd quirk of one platform. It points to a much bigger question about the beauty standards being baked into the AI tools we're increasingly relying on to create, edit and represent us. If these systems are learning from the internet's existing ideals of attractiveness, are they also reinforcing them—one automatically enhanced image at a time?

​According to psychologists, that's exactly what makes these seemingly minor edits so powerful. "When people repeatedly see a slightly enhanced version of themselves—smoother skin, more symmetry, subtly narrowed features—it can recalibrate their internal standard of what they 'should' look like," explains Tara Well, associate professor of psychology at Barnard College of Columbia University. "Over time, the unedited face can begin to feel like a deviation rather than the baseline."

We've become used to talking about social media through the lens of comparison. For years, experts have warned that scrolling through impossibly beautiful celebrities and influencers can leave us feeling inadequate. But AI introduces a new, more intimate–and insidious–comparison: instead of measuring ourselves against other people, we're measuring ourselves against idealised versions of ourselves.

Where traditional beauty filters require an active choice–we know we've selected one, and we're usually aware that what we're looking at isn't entirely real–AI-generated enhancements are different. They're often subtle, automatic and, in my case, completely unsolicited.

"Traditional filters involve a degree of choice and awareness," says Well. "Automatic enhancements blur that boundary. Because the changes are subtle and default, users may not fully register that their appearance has been altered, which can make the enhanced version feel more 'real'. The less effortful and more invisible the modification, the more psychologically persuasive it becomes."

"In short," says Well, "these systems don't just reflect beauty standards—they quietly standardise them. And because the changes are subtle and automatic, they may be more powerful than traditional filters in shaping how people see themselves."

If AI is discreetly reinforcing conventional beauty ideals, the next question is where those ideals came from in the first place.

Professor Clare McGlynn, an expert in law and gender-based violence, argues that these technologies don't exist in a vacuum. They are trained on the same cultural biases that have long shaped women's relationship with their appearance.

"Your example shows just how deeply embedded traditional views of women and beauty are," she tells me. "We know social media exposure has adversely impacted girls' self-esteem and body image, contributing to psychological distress and self-harm. The concern is that AI could intensify those harms because it makes these 'improvements' feel even more seamless and inevitable."

In many ways, that's what unsettled me most. It wasn't that the AI had made dramatic changes to my face. Quite the opposite. The edits were subtle enough to feel plausible. The kind of tweaks you might struggle to put your finger on (worryingly, my partner hadn’t even noticed), but that, combined, nudged me a little closer to a familiar beauty ideal.

I’m not the only person left questioning myself. Journalist Kish Lal had a strikingly similar experience after asking Claude to analyse her appearance as part of a reporting project. Like me, she thought she'd be able to keep an emotional distance from the results. Instead, she found herself dwelling on critiques she'd never previously considered.

"I'm an AI hater to my core," she laughs. "I hate the way it smoothes and flattens whatever it touches." Even so, one suggestion lingered: again, it was the eyebrows. "The robot told me my eyebrows would look better if they were more manicured," she says. "I'd always loved my bushy brows. I used to rip photos of Natalia Vodianova out of magazines because of hers. I even joked to a friend that the AI must just be telling everyone to thread their eyebrows."

Then her friend tried the same experiment. "It complimented her brows and told her to get filler instead," Lal recalls. “I couldn't believe that my theory was not only debunked, but that I perhaps, maybe I could look better if I got my eyebrows threaded regularly. I scheduled an appointment to get them done the next day.”

It's easy to dismiss moments like these as trivial or even funny. But they reveal something much more uncomfortable. AI doesn't need to tell us we're unattractive to influence how we see ourselves. Sometimes, all it has to do is quietly suggest that we'd look a little better if we were just... slightly different.

The more sophisticated these tools become, the more they're marketed as neutral assistants—helping us create images, edit photos or generate avatars in seconds. But assistants aren't neutral if they're making value judgements on our behalf.

On their own, those edits seem almost laughably insignificant. I joked about my 'glow-up' with friends the way Kish Lal did and yet in both instances, we were left wondering what difference those subtle suggestions would make to our appearance.

As AI-generated images become more common—and companies race to build tools that can create ever more convincing versions of us—we'll spend a lot of time talking about consent, copyright and misinformation. We absolutely should, but I'd argue we also need to ask another question: when AI decides what we should look like, whose idea of beauty is it reproducing?

Because if I ask it to add a dalmatian, I'd quite like it to stop there.

Whilst there is plenty to love about the summer months, there are also several downsides that make me resent spending more time in my swimming costume. Namely, contending with ingrown hairs and KP bumps, alongside being much sweatier than usual. However, glycolic acid has quickly become the hero multi-use product to tackle almost every summer skin woe you could think of.

"Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from sugar cane," explains Dr Nora Jaafar, Dermatological doctor. "It exfoliates by dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells, helping to improve skin texture, brightness and overall smoothness."

By gently chemically exfoliating, it directly targets the causes of keratosis pilaris, prevents ingrown hairs, and can even lower the skin's pH which can stop odour-causing bacteria growing. Here's what the experts want you to know about using glycolic acid this summer, and how to do so safely.

Why is glycolic acid so popular?

"It's one of the most effective ingredients for improving skin texture, smoothing rough patches and giving the skin a brighter, healthier appearance," explains Dr Anna Andrienko, Dermatologist & Aesthetic Doctor at Dr Ducu Clinics. This, coupled with its gentle formula, make it a brilliant multi-tasker that can suit most skin types.

Is glycolic acid good for dry, rough skin?

"Glycolic acid is excellent for areas like the elbows, knees and heels where dead skin can build up," says Dr Andrienko. "By gently exfoliating the surface, it helps smooth roughness and allows moisturisers to penetrate more effectively."

But it's important not to go overboard with it, particularly if it's new to your routine. "Overuse can worsen dryness, so it should always be paired with a good moisturiser," says Dr Nora.

Can it help keratosis pilaris (KP)?

"Glycolic acid helps break down the excess keratin that blocks hair follicles, reducing the rough bumps associated with keratosis pilaris. Consistent use is needed, as KP is a long-term genetic condition," explains Dr Nora. Although you shouldn't expect overnight results, you're likely to notice a big difference over time.

Does glycolic acid help with ingrown hairs?

"Glycolic acid can be very helpful for preventing ingrown hairs. By keeping the skin exfoliated, it reduces the likelihood of hairs becoming trapped beneath the surface. It's particularly useful on the legs, bikini line and underarms, but it shouldn't be used straight after shaving or waxing as this can cause irritation," says Dr Andrienko.

Moreover, "it may also help fade the dark marks left behind after ingrown hairs heal," explains Dr Nora. Although it isn't guaranteed to eradicate these problems completely, it can make a huge difference as a regular part of your routine.

Can glycolic acid help with body odour?

"Glycolic acid lowers the skin’s pH, making it a less favourable environment for odour-causing bacteria. While it’s not a replacement for deodorant, many people find it helps reduce underarm odour," says Dr Nora.

Dr Andrienko notes that "glycolic acid doesn't stop you sweating," but explains that "some people find it helps reduce odour when used on areas such as the underarms, but it should only be applied to healthy, unbroken skin and not immediately after shaving."

Is glycolic acid safe to use during summer?

"Glycolic acid can be used safely in summer as long as you wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30-50 every day. It can make skin more sensitive to UV light, so sun protection is essential," says Dr Nora.

Dr Andrienko agrees, noting that "it's best applied in the evening, and sunscreen should always be worn on exposed areas during the day. If you're spending prolonged periods in strong sunshine, it's sensible to reduce how often you use it to avoid irritation."

Who should avoid glycolic acid?

"Those with eczema, rosacea or a damaged skin barrier should use glycolic acid cautiously, as it can cause irritation. It’s best introduced gradually, starting once or twice a week," says Dr Nora.

Mistakes to avoid

Although it can be tempting to start slathering glycolic acid on your whole body, approach with caution. "One of the biggest mistakes is using glycolic acid too often or combining it with several other active ingredients, such as retinoids or strong exfoliating acids, in the same routine. This can damage the skin barrier and lead to redness, dryness and sensitivity. Start slowly, use it a few times a week, and increase frequency only if your skin tolerates it well," says Dr Andrienko.

Shop glycolic acid

An increasingly familiar scene is playing out on TikTok: a 20-something girl slathers her body in tan-accelerating oil, then lies out in peak sun. Next, the camera zooms in on her walnut-coloured tan and the stark outline of her bikini straps. What follows are remarks about the UV Index. “As soon as that UV Index starts hitting six and up, this is where I’m at,” says one TikToker, reclining on her sun lounger, a tub of Carroten in shot. “I’m roasting, and I love it; I love every minute of it. I have my little book with me, I’ve got my tanning gel, I’ve got my water, my phone’s on do not disturb. Life is good, man.” While another boasts, “A little burn goes a long way.” Welcome to Gen Z’s disturbing new world of ‘tanmaxxing’.

As the name suggests, the viral trend is all about maximising your deepest, darkest tan. It encourages you to use the UV Index, which measures the intensity of the sun’s rays, to find times when the risk of burning is highest. Some devotees are taking the trend even further by turning to Melanotan, an unlicensed synthetic peptide that mimics the hormone that stimulates melanin production. Marketed as a shortcut to a deeper tan with less sun exposure, it carries significant health risks and has been linked to the darkening of existing moles, the appearance of new moles and freckles, and other changes in skin pigmentation.

There’s an outcry from doctors and dermatologists, who call the trend “extremely dangerous”. The premise of tanmaxxing is, after all, to shun SPF in favour of deliberately exposing the skin to UV rays at their most powerful. “A tan is essentially your skin responding to injury,” says Dr Ahmed El Muntasar, a GP and aesthetics doctor. “When your skin is exposed to ultraviolet light, it produces more melanin (the pigment that gives skin its colour) in an attempt to protect the DNA within skin cells from further damage.”

Dr Brendan Khong, a medical and aesthetic doctor, says the long-term effects are deeply problematic. “Every deliberate tanning session, whether it’s ‘creating a base tan’ or a ‘filter-ready glow’, is banking DNA damage in skin cells,” he explains. “That damage doesn’t repair itself – it accumulates.”

It will, at best, manifest as premature ageing—wrinkles, pigmentation, loss of elasticity—and, at worst, cause skin cancer. Gen Z already knows that. Yet they’re tanmaxxing anyway. These are the same girls who raided Sephora for Drunk Elephant’s retinol and vitamin C serums, and whose slavish following of TikTok ‘skinfluencers’ turned the likes of Hyram Yarbro into a superstar. So what’s changed?

What’s driving the tanmaxxing trend?

There’s a fair amount to unpack here. Let’s start with how, in recent years, tan lines have gone from naff to sexy in popular culture. Singer Addison Rae proved the point by appearing in Perfect magazine under the headline “Addison Rae is Full-Hot” with the pale outline of her bikini etched onto nearly-naked, bronzed skin. Meanwhile, over on Instagram, the cool girls are making a case for sunburn blush, a technique where reddish-coloured blush is swept over the cheeks and bridge of the nose to look like you’ve spent too long in the sun.

It also leans into the controversial ‘looksmaxxing’ conversation, which endorses extreme measures for extreme results to maximise physical attractiveness, says Chelsea Mtada, a trends analyst, beauty consultant and founder of I.T Girl Intelligence.

Others believe that tanmaxxing is an act of rebellion, in much the same way that smoking is back in fashion and giving the booming wellness industry the middle finger. Dr Khong isn’t so sure. He believes the motivation for tanmaxxing runs much deeper. “Gen Z absolutely knows the skin cancer statistics—they have grown up with SPF campaigns and dermatologist content on their feeds,” he says. “But knowing a risk intellectually and feeling it emotionally are two different things, especially when the visible reward—tanned, sun-kissed, ‘snatched’ skin—is immediate and the consequences are decades away.”

Gen Z’s mindset post Covid may also play a part. “Gen Z came of age during a period defined by uncertainty and cancelled futures,” Dr Khong notes. “That has fed a broader cultural pull towards instant gratification—not just in tanning, but in how this generation approaches health generally. It’s less a conscious act of defiance and more that long-term consequences feel abstract compared to how a tan looks in a photo today.” This reflects the findings of the Canadian Dermatology Association into the disconnect between tanning behaviours and rising skin cancer rates among Gen Z. Research found that nearly 39% intentionally tanned during the previous year, 45% say it makes them feel more confident, and 37% say they look better in photos.

Much of its appeal also comes down to how a tan is perceived as the ultimate summer fantasy. “The Gen Z audience was never loyal,” says Mtada. "From clean girl to skinification, this was an audience that was always going to follow the lead of the algorithm. In 2026, bronzed bodies on Love Island and ‘Euro summer’ are the aspirational mood board.” During a cost-of-living crisis, a tan says “I can afford to go on holiday.” It’s also associated with looking slimmer, healthier and more attractive—“beauty standards that social media reinforces,” Dr Muntasar adds.

Much of this messaging comes from ‘tanfluencers’, who discuss the necessary steps to get a deep tan in much the same way people talk about their skincare routines. “Platforms like TikTok can normalise behaviour very quickly,” Dr Muntasar says. “When someone sees hundreds of videos promoting tanning as part of a beauty routine, the risks can start to feel distant or less important, particularly because skin cancer often develops years later, rather than immediately after sun exposure. Once something is labelled as ‘self-care’, people naturally become less cautious about it.”

And, last, but by no means least, there’s the psychology of a tan. For many people, a tan and a smattering of sunburn are associated with positive memories. Robyn, a 23-year-old social media manager, says: “I associate a tan with summer, with holidays, with feeling ‘glowy’—all things that make me feel happy and beautiful. I think tan lines look quite sexy, and the marketing around them as an accessory has definitely made an impression on me. Tanning as an adult also feels like a reclamation of my brown skin, which I used to hate seeing darken in the sun, afraid it would make me stand out more than I already did among my white friends.”

She goes on to say, “I do worry about my skin and have a lot of anxiety about it drying out or getting damaged while I tan. I always make sure my face and neck are slathered in a high-factor sunscreen, but I’m more careless with the rest of my body.”

Is there such thing as a 'healthy tan'?

The safe sun guidelines remain true: “Seek shade during peak UV hours; wear protective clothing, sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats where practical and avoid the temptation to use sunbeds,” says Dr Muntasar. But as an aesthetic, a tan needn’t be demonised—false tan can create beautifully sunkissed limbs, just without the damage.

And while the UV Index is a useful guide, some experts now say that you don't need to wear SPF if the UV index is 3 or under, unless you have a family history of melanoma, lots of moles or you’re using retinol. “Most international guidance recommends sun protection when the UV Index reaches 3 or above because that’s the point at which UV radiation becomes strong enough to cause skin damage with prolonged exposure,” Dr Muntasar says. “If you’re briefly walking from your house to your car on a winter morning with a UV Index of 1 or 2, the risk is obviously very different from lying in the midday sun during summer. Personally, I wear SPF every morning because it’s a simple habit that removes the guesswork.”

Tanmaxxing is the other extreme end of the spectrum. It’s also undoubtedly harmful, especially given that a 2025 survey by the American Academy of Dermatology found that half of Gen Z respondents had already got sunburnt, and most said they often forget to wear sunscreen.

There’s also an argument that suncare brands need to rethink their messaging. “Their communication has been explicit about the face and the neck, where selfies are the dominant way Gen Z consumers perceive themselves,” says Mtada. “That's where protection is guarded. But where brands haven't paid enough attention is protecting the body against the sun.”

I nursed my mum through three episodes of stage 4 skin cancer. I know first-hand how gruelling the treatment is: surgery, where large chunks of your flesh are sliced away, and immunotherapy drugs that can cause dangerously high fevers, possible organ damage and the top layer of your skin to painfully peel away. That is, if you’re lucky enough to live near an NHS hospital that offers the treatment. If not, prepare to fork out over £4K privately per infusion. I also know that treatment doesn’t always work. Surely no fleeting TikTok trend or hot girl summer is worth that.

When it comes to seasonally scented body care, I’m jumping in there headfirst. The moment June arrives, every product in my routine gets a warm-weather upgrade. And I mean all—shower gel, body lotion, body mist and even my deodorant. If it doesn't smell like summer, it's off the shelf.

Beauty insiders, biohackers and longevity enthusiasts are going crazy for copper, more specifically, GHK-Cu, a copper peptide linked to everything from wound healing and collagen production to thicker, healthier-looking hair. From supplements and serums to creams and injectables, you may have noticed it all over your social feeds. But despite the sudden surge in popularity, it’s actually not a new ingredient. So, with that in mind, is it really the Wunderkind everyone’s claiming it to be? We spoke to the experts to find out…

GHK-Cu explained

When it comes to peptides, “think of them like keys that open up different locks,” shares Dr Omar Babar, medical director at Healand Clinic. “Each key latches onto a specific lock aka a receptor in the body, and unlocks a specific process like making collagen, repairing tissue, releasing a hormone, and so on," he adds.

GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring peptide made up of three amino acids—glycine, histidine and lysine—which binds to a copper ion, forming a compound the body uses as a repair signal. When our tissue is damaged, GHK-Cu gets to work by stimulating collagen production, calming inflammation, and signalling cells to regenerate.

As we age, our natural levels of GHK-Cu drop significantly. "By boosting it, you're allowing the skin to do what it's naturally supposed to be doing: stimulating repair mechanisms and supporting its own healing properties," explains Babar. So, it makes sense that there’s so much interest in replenishing natural stores through serums, supplements and injectable protocols.

GHK-Cu skin benefits

GHK-Cu signals fibroblasts (the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin) to ramp up production. It also functions as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. This makes the peptide quite unique. As Alejandro Saldarriaga, head of applied research at DECIEM, explains, they “support several aspects of healthy-looking skin rather than focusing on a single visible concern.”

And according to Dr Charlie Cox, longevity doctor at longevity hospital Reborne, “the topical skin evidence is the most solid data when it comes to the effectiveness of GHK-Cu, as studies show an improvement in firmness, texture, tone and fine lines.”

Take the stats on the NIOD Copper Amino Isolate Serum 31:1, for example. A lightweight, water-based serum designed to support overall skin quality, including firmness, elasticity, smoothness, and radiance. Studies found that twice-daily use of the product for 12 weeks visibly repairs multiple types of facial wrinkles, including crow's feet, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, forehead lines, and glabellar wrinkles. It also showed significant improvement in skin tone evenness at four and eight weeks, and in elasticity at four weeks.

It’s impressive, which is why it’s being compared to the gold standard ‘skin perfector’ retinol, as it offers similar results despite GHK-Cu being far more tolerable for sensitive or reactive skin types. "Retinol works by accelerating the skin's renewal processes, while copper peptides support the skin's natural repair and renewal mechanisms. For some individuals, this can make copper peptides a valuable alternative or complement to retinoids, particularly when skin comfort and tolerability are important considerations," says Saldarriaga.

What GHK-Cu does for hair

People across social media have been raving about the impressive hair growth they’ve noticed while using GHK-Cu, especially when injecting the stuff (more on that later). In theory, it makes sense that this copper peptide could “help improve blood supply to the follicle, support tissue repair, and prolong the hair growth phase,” explains Hannah Gaboardi, trichologist and founder of The Hannah Gaboardi Clinic. And that’s because GHK-Cu activates the Wnt/beta-catenin signalling pathway (the biological mechanism that pushes follicles from their resting phase back into active growth), while also reducing inflammation around each follicle, which over time can shorten the growth cycle, as well as contribute to strands growing back finer and weaker.

The copper peptide might also be helpful in treating telogen effluvium, the type of diffuse shedding triggered by stress, illness, surgery, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies or significant weight loss. While it doesn't address the underlying trigger, "by supporting cellular signalling, reducing inflammation and promoting scalp health, it can complement a treatment plan focused on correcting the root cause," says Gaboardi.

She stresses that this caveat matters, as "peptides alone are unlikely to resolve telogen effluvium if the underlying trigger remains unaddressed. The most important step is identifying and correcting the cause, whether that is low iron, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid dysfunction, stress or hormonal changes." The same logic applies to androgenetic alopecia. Since GHK-Cu has no effect on DHT - the hormone that drives this common form of female hair loss - it can't be used as a substitute for treatments that target DHT directly like minoxidil.

“Since it's relatively new, we don't have enough long-term research compared to the likes of minoxidil or other DHT blockers, or even in-clinic treatments like PRP," notes Gaboardi. So, realistically, where it is likely to genuinely help is with diffuse thinning, post-damage recovery, weakened strands, and a compromised scalp environment—as we do know it supports the conditions needed for healthy growth.

Delivery methods decoded

Bioavailability, which is essentially how much of an active actually reaches your bloodstream or target tissue, varies wildly depending on the delivery method. "Anything taken orally, only 20 to 40 per cent will get absorbed into the bloodstream as the rest gets destroyed in the stomach. When injected beyond the skin barrier and into the tissues, you get the highest bioavailability of all—anywhere from 90 per cent all the way up to 99 per cent. And then topicals sit somewhere in between, with absorption varying depending on the size of the molecule," shares Babar.

For most people, topical application of GHK-Cu purchased from a reputable source, paired with microneedling, is the most accessible and the safest avenue. The micro-channels created by the tiny needles improve penetration, so you increase bioavailability without the need for injection, which is where things get considerably murkier.

A word on injectable peptides

A huge and largely unregulated market has emerged around injectable peptides, with most bought directly online - think longevity compounds, tanning agents, and recovery aids. “The GLP-1 boom is largely responsible. As many of these compounds aren't new discoveries, they were researched decades ago and shelved, sometimes for commercial reasons, sometimes simply because society wasn't ready for at-home injecting. But the popularity of weight-loss jabs has made self-injecting completely normal for millions who'd never previously considered it, and that comfort has spilt over into peptides. A whole industry is now poised to launch because of the normalisation of self-injecting,” reveals Babar, who offers a range of ‘for research purposes only’ peptides at his clinic.

‘Research purposes’ is the key here, as GHK-Cu and other popular peptides “don’t hold a marketing authorisation, so they cannot lawfully be sold or marketed for human use,” reveals Cox. They can be used by an individual for research purposes, but the risk is that, as of yet, we don’t have the same clinical trial data as with the likes of Ozempic and Mounjaro. Meaning injectable peptides can be risky business, as most people buying peptides online have absolutely no idea if what they’re taking is legit.

“We literally spend thousands of pounds testing and vetting our peptides before you can actually use them for clinic purposes. But that’s not the case for a lot of the suppliers people buy from. God knows where they're produced, in what conditions, how they're being stored, and how they’re shipped from country to country,” says Babar.

Whether it’s GHK-Cu or another peptide, the biggest risk has very little to do with the molecule itself and everything to do with what you're actually injecting. In recent years independent testing of consumer peptides bought online has repeatedly found a significant proportion failing basic quality checks, with live bacteria, heavy metals and bacterial endotoxin (which can cause serious illness and even death) being present in samples.

Even if your peptides are the real deal, they could be dangerous for your health. Take Melanotan, a synthetic peptide that mimics the hormone that stimulates melanin production, pushing pigment-producing cells to work harder for a faster, deeper tan without time in the sun. The skin cancer risk can’t be ignored, as “people have reported existing moles becoming darker, new freckles or moles appearing and changes in pigmentation,” shares Dr Ahmed El Muntasar, GP and founder of The Aesthetics Doctor Clinic. He advises against using melanotan, noting that “any change in a mole is something we take very seriously because it can potentially make it harder to identify early warning signs of melanoma.”

Is GHK-Cu worth a try?

When it comes to using GHK-Cu topically on the skin, the answer is a resounding yes. However, “consumers should also be aware that not all copper peptide products are made equal. The form of the peptide, the amount used, and the surrounding formulation can vary considerably from product to product,” warns Saldarriaga.

As for our hair, the science is plausible, but the proof isn't there yet, and it's no substitute for treatments that address hormonal hair loss directly. So, if you fancy giving it a shot, “prioritise reputable brands that provide clinical data, research and transparent ingredient lists,” shares Gaboardi.

And when it comes to injectable GHK-Cu, Saldarriaga points out that it’s worth remembering that “copper peptides have a long history of use in skincare, with origins in dermatology and medicine stretching back to the late 1980s. Whereas many injectable peptide protocols are still supported by a more limited body of evidence. As with any emerging area, it's important that growing interest is matched by continued research.” That might mean right now the risks outweigh the rewards. But if you’re keen to give it a go, be sure to source your injectable peptides through a properly vetted clinician rather than social media.

GHK-Cu products to try now

If there's one thing I can't stand, it's a thick, chalky facial sunscreen. Not only do they feel uncomfortable on the skin, but they can also make makeup application a nightmare. Best lightweight facial SPFs 2026

The Augustinus Bader sunscreen is one of the Marie Claire team's all-time favourites, and it's still one of my most used SPFs over a year after its launch. There's so much to love about this formula, from its patented healing Trigger Factor Complex (TFC8®) that enhances the skin to its beautifully hydrating finish that leaves the skin with a natural glow—no greasiness whatsoever. The high SPF 50 protects you even on the sunniest of days, and it helps minimise the appearance of fine lines, dullness and age spots whilst you wear it. It has a subtly dewy finish that layers very nicely with makeup, but it doesn't get shiny or oily throughout the day. I'm a big fan of the squeezy packaging for easy application, and it's suitable for all skin types and colours. If you have problematic skin and want a fragrance-free formula that won't trigger breakouts, this is a brilliant option.

I'm a sucker for a milky SPF, but not all lightweight sunscreens fall into that category. A milky formula tends to be both light and extra hydrating, ideal for dry or dehydrated skin types that need a nourishing boost. Tatcha's newest SPF does exactly that, leaving a dewy finish that makes the skin naturally glowy. I love how undetectable this sunscreen is, as well as how well it instantly soothes tight skin thanks to vitamin E and encapsulated ectoin. You can expect zero white cast and day-long hydration that keeps you protected from UV rays.

More like a tinted serum than a traditional SPF, La Roche Posay's Anthelios UVAIR formula has a thicker finish than other lightweight facial sunscreens. However, it blends in within seconds and sinks right into the skin for comfortable wear with a natural finish. It's more on the matte side, offering a skin-like appearance with concealing and blurring properties. It doesn't provide full coverage in the way a foundation would, but it definitely reduces my redness and makes any dark spots or discolouration much less noticeable. It's my top pick if you want a your-skin-but-better look with UV protection, and the finish lasts up to 16 hours to contend with the summer heat. I'm wearing shade light, and it hardly took any blending with my hands to get a natural look.

The beauty of an SPF mist is how versatile it is; wear under or over makeup without disturbing your products, and use it to top up throughout the day too. Garnier's formula is as close to weightless as it gets, whilst still providing SPF 50 to keep your skin protected. The addition of vitamin C helps to lighten dark spots on the face and add some glow, and the mist itself disappears almost instantly after spraying. The only downside is that it doesn't last as long as liquid formulas, but the budget-friendly price tag makes it more than worth it.

It's no secret that sun exposure can make dark spots and hyperpigmentation worse, so a formula that protects from UV rays and addresses these skin concerns is a winner in my book. Ranavat's mineral formula offers instant SPF 50 protection, as well as saffron to brighten and squalane to moisturise skin and strengthen the skin barrier. It's light and dewy when squeezed out, and feels significantly lighter and smoother than other mineral sunscreens that tend to be thicker. I love it as an even base for applying makeup with no slipperiness, and the added skincare benefits make it a 2-in-1 product in my daily routine.

If I'm on holiday, I rarely go a full hour without jumping in the pool or sea—so a water-resistant SPF is essential. But even when I'm at home, a London heatwave also calls for UV protection that I won't sweat off. The Dr. Dennis Gross All Physical Ultimate Defense SPF 50 is both water and sweat-resistant for long lasting protection, but it's another sunscreen that has a hydrating and milky formula. The finish is very subtly dewy without oiliness, and it has both a pump and squeezy tube so you can get every last drop. Another huge plus is that it's fragrance-free, so won't irritate sensitive or acne-prone skin.

This SPF was the first Beauty of Joseon product I fell in love with, and you can see from my almost-empty tube that it's been well loved. It sits somewhere between a milk and a cream, so it's extremely light as well as nourishing and hydrating. It's completely non-greasy and suitable for all skin types thanks to the gentle formula, and it's one of my favourites for wearing under makeup. It provides a hydrated base without any chalkiness whatsoever, acting like a gorgeous primer. Plus, it's ridiculously affordable for SPF 50.

Growing-up, when I thought about a facelift, I envisioned rich old ladies with distorted facial features, unnaturally tight skin, and tell-tale scarring. Now, with celebs being more transparent about the work they have had, I, along with everyone else have become more aware of what a good facelift can do. And that offers a natural-looking, yet completely transformative youth boost. Kris Jenner, Sia, Lindsay Lohan (allegedly), and at least a dozen Bravo Housewives have wowed us with their new faces. So, now, as going under the knife has become more normalised than ever before—I’m starting to consider the surgery I once thought I’d never have.

I’m not alone, as according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAPPS), face and neck lifts rose by 11 per cent in 2025, while brow lifts, which are typically combined with facelifts, increased by a whopping 27 per cent. So, as the reality became not if, but when would I get a facelift, I also started to wonder if I would have to start planning my longstanding and future aesthetic treatments around my desire to go under the knife.

“You absolutely do,” shared plastic surgeon, and Mallucci London founder, Patrick Mallucci. “The road to surgery requires as much thought as the surgery itself, because what many patients don’t realise is that the aesthetic treatments you have in the years, months and even weeks before a facelift can significantly affect the surgery and the outcome.”

Facelifts, explained

Ponytail facelift, deep-plane facelift, SMAS facelift. There is a plethora of terms for what plastic surgeon and aesthetic doctor, Lara De Luca, explains is essentially, “a surgical procedure that repositions and tightens the facial tissues and removes excess skin to restore a more youthful appearance.” What makes the latest facelift techniques better than facelifts of old is that, “modern facelifts focus on lifting and repositioning the underlying structures of the face rather than simply pulling the skin tight. This creates more natural-looking, longer-lasting results and avoids the overly stretched appearance that was sometimes associated with older techniques,” adds De Luca. But like with most aesthetic treatments and surgical procedures, one size does not fit all. “Every surgeon has their own technique, and every technique has its advantages and disadvantages. The buzz surrounding particular techniques on social media can be misleading and a distraction from the more important conversation about which technique suits you best,” adds Mallucci.

What suits you will largely be dictated by several factors: your bone structure, skin thickness, fat distribution, the level of sagging, as well as how much downtime you're willing to accept and your long-term goals. Age doesn’t really play a role, as it's less about how old you are and more about how soon you show signs of ageing. "Some patients may be suitable candidates in their 40s or earlier, particularly if they have experienced significant weight loss (often assisted by GLP-1s), extensive sun damage or have a strong genetic tendency towards early facial ageing. Others may not consider surgery until their 60s or later. Genetics, lifestyle, skin quality and facial structure all play a role," shares De Luca.

The treatments that can complicate things

Timing is key. Not just when you decide to go under the knife, but how you plan the aesthetic treatments that are often booked to push surgery further down the line—and, increasingly, which treatments you've been told to fear versus which ones actually deserve the reputation. TikTok is awash with videos vilifying certain treatments as facelift-ruiners. The truth, however, is far more nuanced than the discourse suggests.

Sculptra, in particular, has become a scapegoat for a problem that's largely historic. Plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr Ashwin Soni explains that complaints traced back to how the product was used years ago, not the product itself. "Sculptra comes as plant-derived microparticles mixed with sterile water, and very early on, some providers weren't diluting it enough," he says. "Injected too concentrated—and often too deep, in the same plane surgeons later need to work on during a facelift—it triggered a collagen response that could potentially cause lumps, leading to a lasting reputation".

The good news is that dilution protocols have moved on, and most biostimulators now follow far more conservative guidelines. Soni often recommends Sculptra to his own patients, both to improve skin elasticity ahead of a facelift and to maintain results afterwards—provided you're seeing someone who genuinely understands facial anatomy and injection depth. In fact, Sculptra is one of the safest and most robustly researched biostimulators available today, having originally been developed over 25 years ago for medical use and put through rigorous safety protocols.

Threads, however, are a different story. Where Sculptra's reputation has outlived its risk, Soni is unequivocal that threads haven't—he never recommends them, calling the scarring risk, from both the depth they're typically placed at and the way they interact with tissue, too consistent a downside for someone planning future surgery.

Other biostimulators like hydrating Profhilo, regenerative exosomes and polynucleotides are not "a concern," reveals Mallucci, as they're designed to improve skin quality, boost hydration, and stimulate collagen at a superficial level. The same goes for devices like ultrasound-powered Sofwave and Morpheus8, which combines microneedling with radiofrequency to tighten and contour skin.

One category we should be more wary of, says Mallucci, is "deep-acting energy devices" such as J-Plasma and FaceTite, which work at a level that can scar you in the same planes a surgeon later needs. Soni makes a related point about radio frequency microneedling specifically: the risk isn't really the device category, it's whether the person holding it understands anatomy. "You need to make sure that you're with a provider who understands it," he says—the same caveat, really, that applies to all non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

What about dermal filler?

Though dermal filler has arguably been knocked off the top spot with the rise of biostimulators and fat transfers, many aesthetic doctors still believe it has an important role to play when it comes to lifting, and contouring the face—especially in the years leading up to a facelift. "However, large volumes of filler can sometimes mask the true extent of age-related volume loss or tissue descent, making assessment more challenging," explains De Luca. "They’re not a contraindication to surgery, but it’s important that patients disclose their filler history during the consultation so the surgeon can plan accordingly."

And you might not even have to dissolve your filler pre-surgery, “In some cases it might be an advantage to dissolve the filler before the facelift. In other cases, it’s not necessarily required. It depends on where it’s been put and how long ago,” adds Mallucci.

Find one doctor, not five

If there's one piece of advice that cuts across all of this, it's not about which treatment to avoid—it's about who's administering it. Soni is candid that patients hopping between providers make surgical planning harder, simply because no one has the full picture. "People need to have a long-term game plan with a doctor, with whom they're in a long-term patient relationship," he says, pointing out that skin quality and anatomy shift over time regardless of what you have or haven't had done.

His advice for anyone choosing a provider: do your homework and research them in depth. Check before-and-afters, ask about training and experience with facial anatomy, read reviews, and confirm their registration with the various governing bodies like the General Medical Council, or the Nursing & Midwifery Council. The BCAM Pre-Consultation Safety Questionnaire is a handy six-step checklist designed to help you choose safely. It covers practitioner qualifications, insurance, premises standards and product sourcing, and can be printed or sent to a clinic ahead of time.

When to stop tweaking

Whether you choose to get a facelift in your 40s, 50s, 60s or 70s, the healthier your skin is, the better—if we ensure our skin is well-hydrated, collagen-rich and resilient it will make a meaningful difference to both our results and recovery.

What we must do is be totally transparent with our future surgeons and go for our first consult at good amount of time before our ideal surgery date. “As a rule of thumb, stopping treatments at least six months before surgery, and ideally up to a year in some cases, allows for better assessment and surgical planning. Patients also need to disclose all previous aesthetic treatments, as well as any previous facial surgery or trauma. This information can significantly influence surgical planning and helps avoid unexpected findings during surgery,” says De Luca.

I’m planning to create a digital diary of all the treatments I’ve already had (everything from injectables to lasers), and log all my future treatments too, so by the time I have my first consultation with a surgeon I’ll be armed with all the info they need. Let the countdown begin...

I'm always on the lookout for new facial treatments – particularly those that work to actively contour the face rather than target skin quality. As someone who's recovering from hormonal acne, I'm pretty picky about who touches my face for the latter. But a sculpting facial massage appointment? Sign me up.

This is why when I first heard about fascia facials, I knew they were calling my name. Listen, I love my gua sha and facial rollers so much (and use them every day) but I'm always keen to try something that delivers more dramatic, instant results. Here's what I learned from giving the treatment a go first-hand.

What is the fascia?

Fascia is the connective, supportive tissue that wraps around your muscles, bones, organs and nerves. It also supports structures such as blood vessels and fat compartments. It's present all over your body, but in your face, there are a couple of specific 'systems' that are worth knowing. "The key fascial layer often discussed is the SMAS, the superficial musculoaponeurotic system, which is important in facial structure and ageing," explains Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Sidra Khan.

With this in mind, it makes sense that without giving your fascia attention, you may see signs of puffiness, tension and less definition. It's important to note, of course, that the fascia alone is not responsible for the appearance of your skin and face by any means, but it can be a contributing factor. Stress and tension kept in the jaw, shoulders and neck can contribute to fascia becoming stiff and therefore less smooth, flexible and healthy overall.

What is a fascia facial?

My experience of a fascia facial was pretty typical: this is not a relaxing treatment, but a pretty vigorous facial massage that aims to contour the face, reduce puffiness and aid in lymphatic drainage.

The fascia has long been a focus of Korean contouring facials, so I went to try one out at Pure Glam Beauty. Of their 'Korean Signature Contour,' they explained: "Fascia work is a key part of the treatment. We use targeted techniques to release tension, improve circulation and encourage lymphatic drainage. The goal is to reduce puffiness, enhance facial definition and create a naturally sculpted appearance. Unlike traditional facials that focus mainly on the skin, this treatment works with the deeper facial structures that influence facial shape and contour."

The facial combines stretching motions and firm massage with the fingers, down the neck, shoulders and across the face. My facialist used lifting movements and pressure point work, and did a round of dry massage (with gloves) and one with oil for better slip. It was noticeably different from a 'regular' facial as it's much more focused on facial structure and tension rather than skin quality.

A typical fascia-focused facial will begin with a double cleanse, then move into a series of facial massages (either with or without product and gloves), followed by face masks, moisturiser and mist.

It wasn't the most comfortable treatment I've ever had (particularly at the bit around my neck, which was very sore because my muscles there are tight), but I definitely saw an instant lift post-treatment. When looking at my before and after pictures, you can see a subtle contoured effect particularly along my jawline and cheekbones.

Who would benefit from a fascia facial?

If, like me, you've been experiencing water retention and puffiness around your face, a fascia-focused facial can definitely be a great choice. This is a treatment to try if you want to contour and define the face, rather than enhance skin quality or concentrate on specific concerns such as acne or eczema.

My facialist actually told me that the ideal number of facials to aim for is about 20 a year, if you want long-lasting structural change. For most of us this may not be achievable, but it can be a great one-off treatment for temporary lift and definition. If you have a wedding, party or other special occasion, for example, booking in a week prior for one of these can make a huge difference. As you can experience a little puffiness and soreness the days following an appointment, it's best not to leave it any closer to the date.

Can you do a fascia facial from home?

In theory, yes, but I'd argue this may be better suited to the professionals as we're dealing with the deeper structure of the skin rather than the superficial layers. That said, if you're willing to learn more about the practise and put it to the test, you can benefit from at-home facial massage techniques that aim to improve the fascia.

This is best done with fingers (although if you want to simply try facial massage, a gua sha or roller can make it easy). I'd suggest following a step-by-step tutorial like the ones by @anastasiabeautyfascia: a skin expert who's built her following by focusing on the all-important fascia. Anastasia is proof that long-term attention to the fascia can literally change the shape and structure of the face.

I loved having this treatment and would definitely go back for more, but I'm not sure I personally have the willpower (!!) to perform it on myself regularly. For that, I'll be sticking to my handy gua sha which subtly improves puffiness over time. A professional fascia facial will instead become my special treat.

We might be moving away from the "clean girl" aesthetic, but it will forever be my go-to look—and naturally, I've always loved Refy for it. The brand has built its name on minimalism and healthy, natural-looking skin, and its new Water Blush is the latest proof of that ethos: a lighter, skin-like flush of buildable colour, inspired by K-beauty's cushion compacts and packed with skin-loving ingredients. I was instantly sold on the concept.

The Hype

These aren't Refy's first foray into blush—they launched Cream Blush previously, and the difference is telling. Cream Blush is buttery and radiant; Water Blush is thinner, more like watercolour paint, delivering a fresher, dewier, more natural finish. It's the formulation I'd call genuinely universal—it suits pretty much every skin type and looks the most like real, flushed skin, whereas Cream Blush isn't necessarily one for oily skin types.

What's also special about the formulation is the skincare credentials baked in—it's designed to refresh, hydrate and fortify the skin as you wear it. In an independent study, 94% of users said their skin felt instantly hydrated after use. Green tea water brings the cooling, refreshing hit of hydration, while ceramides lock in moisture and strengthen the skin barrier, keeping the blush looking fresh all day long.

The Application

REFY recommend that you use their Duo 2.0 Brush to apply this, or your fingers. I have, of course, tried it multiple different ways, including with a beauty blender sponge, and I can confirm that using the REFY Duo 2.0 Brush does make the blushes look their best and gives the most diffused finish. It’s also the easiest way to apply them. Having the two ends means that you can apply the colour with the angled end, then use the larger, fluffier end to spread it out and blend (without accidentally adding more colour). Very little blending is required with these, and they almost fuse with the skin to look seamless.

The Verdict

I can't fault the formulation. It's a proper skincare-makeup hybrid (all the best products are), and the cushion delivery means that watery texture gets dispensed and applied in a controlled way, rather than ending up everywhere at once. The result is a flattering, soft-focus finish with just the right amount of dew.

That's backed up by the data: in an independent study, 94% of users said their skin looked dewier and fresher after use. Mine certainly did. They're also brilliantly buildable, so you can layer on as much as you like without tipping into overdone territory.

As someone who works out daily, I appreciate how breathable these are—I've exercised with just this and a concealer on, and my complexion looks brighter and more even without any worry about clogged pores. They're so lightweight and natural-looking, yet surprisingly long-lasting—you can wear these all day, and when they do fade, they fade evenly.

Few products have found continued virality quite like La Roche Posay's Cicaplast. But as someone with a history of severe acne, I've always shied away from more occlusive products for fear of provoking blemishes. After putting Cicaplast Baume SPF 50 to the test, I realise just what I've been missing out on with this product.

Touted as a nourishing balm that soothes and protects irritated skin and even minor injuries, the original Cicaplast balm can be used for everything from moisturising to helping to reduce sebaceous filaments on the nose. The SPF 50 version offers all this, with the added benefit of sun protection too.

Other heroes from the Cicaplast range been staples in my daily routine for years, so it's no surprise that this is now joining their ranks. After a week of testing, these are my honest thoughts on Cicaplast Baume SPF 50—and exactly why it's joined the ranks of my long-standing sunscreen favourites for dry areas.

Cicaplast Baume SPF 50: My review

I've long been aware of the original Cicaplast and its benefits, particularly for healing ultra-dry and damaged skin. However, it never really felt like something I needed. I'm more on the oily side, and my aforementioned fear of clogging my pores and inviting acne into my life was enough to put me off. But after discovering the SPF 50 formula, I was suitably intrigued.

My number one question was how this product could possibly function as a sunscreen. I was under the assumption that it was extremely thick and not all that easy to rub in, so the thought of applying it over my face? A no-go. But after swatching on my hand, I realised just how easily the formula sinks in and dries down.

Although it's designed to be applied on specific problem areas rather than all over, I wanted to see if it would work across my face. The swatch made me confident enough to apply it in a thin layer, to see exactly how it would fare throughout the day and whether it would agree with my skin.

I'm pleased to report, I was extremely pleasantly surprised. It smoothed over my skin nicely and sank in much quicker than I was expecting. I was prepared for a greasy, shiny finish due to the creamy formula, but it didn't take long to settle and leave a skin-like texture.

I used slightly more around my nose and on dry patches, and it did a brilliant job at soothing those areas and helping with the texture that appears.

It also sat comfortably on my face all day with noticeable hydration. However, owing to the fact that it isn't intended as a full facial SPF, I did find that it caused some pilling with makeup towards the end of the day.

Moving forward, I combined it with my regular SPF—applying a base of my everyday sunscreen and topping it up with Cicaplast SPF 50 around my nose and on any dry, itchy patches that cropped up. This method is definitely the key to success. It allowed me to fully protect my skin from UV rays whilst tackling dry patches and texture where needed.

Who should use Cicaplast Baume SPF 50?

Now, it's important to note that Cicaplast Baume SPF 50 is not designed to be an all-over suncream that you'll wear every day—unless you have very damaged or fragile skin. Rather, it's a soothing treatment that can be applied to problem areas and irritations to help to soothe, heal, and protect from the sun.

It does a brilliant job at protecting and nourishing difficult areas of the skin without compromising on SPF protection. It instantly calms the skin once it's applied, making it a very welcome balm to have on hand for any issues that may crop up.

My favourite way to apply it has been around my nose where I get very dry, and on places like my shoulders, elbows, and knees where I'm prone to dryness or suffer with some peeling after being in the sun. It can also be used to nourish tattoos and protect them from the sun, or on grazes that are healing.

But, if you are someone who feels as though you could benefit from using it across your face, I can confirm that it's fit for purpose—and will relieve discomfort whilst keeping UV at bay.

I've spent well over a decade working as a beauty editor, and a significant portion of that time as a willing human pin-cushion in the name of research. I've been injected, lasered, resurfaced, and sculpted by practitioners across the country, which has also given me a finely tuned radar for identifying the truly exceptional. I'm talking about the ones who are medically rigorous, artistically restrained, and utterly incapable of over-treating someone. Winner of Aesthetic Clinic of the Year in both 2023 and 2024, Taktouk Clinic has earned its reputation through substance rather than hype. Dr Wassim—who trained in A&E before spending a decade in emergency medicine—brings a clinical precision that shows in every result; he won't treat you if he doesn't think you need it. Everything he does accentuates in an artistic and perfectly proportioned way, so that the result reads as good genes rather than good injectables.

Dr Christine Hall is the clinic's K-beauty specialist: a GMC-registered GP with South Korean heritage and a deep knowledge of the skincare ingredients and techniques that have made Seoul the world capital of skin. She's inarguably responsible for some of the best glass-skin results in London. To have both of these experts in one setting puts this clinic right at the top of my list.

Prager Clinic

• Where: Beauchamp Place, Chelsea
• Who: Dr Michael Prager
• Known for: Whole-face rejuvenation, non-surgical approaches, long-term patient relationships

One of Europe's most consistently cited aesthetic physicians, Dr Prager has been practising for over 20 years—and has been my go-to doctor for Botox for six of those years (I don't think anyone does it better than him). He treats the face as a whole rather than chasing individual concerns, which is exactly the kind of thinking that separates the great from the merely competent. The result is a face that looks holistically rested and refreshed, not frozen and filled in specific spots.

The Aesthetics Doctor

• Where: Mayfair, London; Leeds; Cheshire
• Who: Dr Ahmed El Muntasar
• Known for: Medically led aesthetics, Sculptra, advanced injectables and laser treatments

Dr Ahmed has the credentials that would make most practitioners feel slightly inadequate. He was the youngest-ever medical student admitted to St Andrews, NHS GP, MSc in Medical Leadership from UCL, over 10,000 procedures performed (and he's a judge at the Marie Claire Skin Awards). His Sculptra work, in particular, is worth a mention—Sculptra is currently the most sought-after biostimulator in aesthetics (it stimulates your own collagen rather than simply filling, which means results build gradually and last up to two years), and Dr Ahmed administers it with the same precision and restraint that defines everything else he does.

His Mayfair clinic was named Best New Clinic at the Safety in Beauty Awards 2025, and patients travel from the Middle East and beyond for his work. Plus, he's genuinely one of the nicest, warmest practitioners I've ever had the pleasure of being treated by.

Dr Sophie Shotter

• Where: 10 Harley Street, London
• Who: Dr Sophie Shotter
• Known for: Natural injectables, polynucleotides, holistic anti-ageing, energy-based devices

Dr Shotter's philosophy is that the best work should be invisible, meaning you'll leave looking like yourself, just significantly more rested and with a coveted glow. A board member of the British College of Aesthetic Medicine and Aesthetic Medical Practitioner of the Year 2023, she's as rigorous about safety as she is about results. Her inside-out approach, combining injectables with skincare, supplements, and hormone health where relevant, is what sets her apart from the crowd.

The Soni Clinic

• Where: Ascot, Berkshire; The Langham, London
• Who: Dr Ash Soni
• Known for: Surgical and non-surgical expertise, polynucleotides, Sculptra, precision injectables

Dr Ash Soni is, technically, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon—trained at Imperial College, Cornell's New York Presbyterian, Johns Hopkins, and The Royal Marsden. Which is to say: he's operating at a level most aesthetic doctors could only dream of. He literally brings surgical-level anatomical knowledge to non-surgical treatments. Plus, his aesthetic eye is renowned for being exceptional, and his clinic's London residency at The Langham is beautiful. He has also published more than 40 peer-reviewed papers, which tells you everything about how seriously he takes the science.

Dr Glyn Medispa

• Where: Chester; Fitzrovia, London
• Who: Dr Glyn Estebanez
• Known for: Facial harmonisation, bespoke injectables, a surgical eye applied to non-surgical results

Another trained surgeon and member of the Royal College of Surgeons, Dr Glyn's move into aesthetic means he approaches the face with a structural understanding most injectors simply don't have. His signature offering, facial harmonisation, is exactly what it sounds like: a whole-face approach that prioritises balance and proportion over isolated quick fixes. He has been accepted into the Mauricio de Maio global mentoring programme, which is effectively the gold standard in aesthetic education, and his work across Chester and Fitzrovia has earned him a devoted following. If you're nervous, he's also notably good at putting first-timers at ease.

Finding your perfect mascara is a minefield. Everyone's lashes are different, everyone wants something different, and what works for one person is irrelevant to another. But I've tried enough of them to know a gem when I see it—and with thoroughly average lashes, I'd argue I'm a reliable test case.

Merit has a habit of launching things that actually deliver, so when Clean Volume landed on my desk, I was already half-convinced. It's a tubing mascara, which is my preferred formulation, and if you haven't tried one yet, I'm not sure what you're waiting for. They don't smudge, they don't budge, and they slide off with warm water at the end of the day. The only mascaras I'll actually wear in real life are tubing ones—panda eyes simply aren't a risk I'm willing to take.

The Hype

There was a lot of buzz around this launch in beauty circles, and it wasn't hard to see why. The clinical stats were impressive—100% of participants showed increased volume, length and lift, while 96% agreed it volumised without clumping—and the formula sounded genuinely innovative. A Japanese-made tubing mascara that promises precise, buildable volume without any heaviness or smudging is, on paper, a difficult problem to solve. Add in a first-of-its-kind petite precision brush designed to lift and separate each lash individually, a 16-hour wear claim, and easy warm-water removal, and the excitement starts to make a lot of sense.

The application

The fact that this is a tubing mascara doesn't change how you apply it. The difference is that tubing mascaras wrap your lashes in a film-like tube, rather than just coat them in colour that can run and smudge. When it comes to removal, the tubes just glide off without any rubbing required.

So, as normal, you comb the wand through your lashes from root to tip. It’s a buildable mascara, as long as you keep combing it through while they’re still wet. Then all you have to do is wait for the film tubes to form around your lashes as they dry.

The Verdict

Merit is all about minimal, clean-looking, uncomplicated beauty, and this is reflected in the new Clean Volume Mascara. You are not going to get a false lash look with this. It’s for people who want increased length, volume and lift in a natural looking, but still defined, way. This mascara focusses on defining each lash individually with a precision wand, rather than just packing on product. It gives me exactly the look I want – natural lashes that look better all-round, with no clumping in sight.

When you compare one eye with this mascara to one without, you can clearly see how it makes my lashes more impactful, defines each lash, and visibly boosts length, volume, and lift. But the key fact is—they still look like my lashes, i.e., they look light and not like I am wearing much mascara.

I can wear this mascara from breakfast to bed at night, with no signs of flaking or smudging. Even in the sweaty hell of a spin class, I’ll only see a few flecks under my eyes when I leave—the little tubes that can be just swiped away in one motion.

A precious few things are touted as a cure-all for hormonal acne, but spironolactone—a prescription-based medication—has been doing the rounds on social media for exactly that reason. But can anything really be a cure-all for something as complex as acne, and who exactly is it right for?

Originally developed to treat conditions such as high blood pressure and heart failure, spironolactone is now frequently prescribed by consultant dermatologists, like Dr Zainab Laftah, for hormonal acne and female pattern hair loss due to its anti-androgen effects.

“It’s most commonly prescribed for women with signs of androgen-driven conditions,” Dr Laftah explains. “This includes hormonal acne, particularly acne affecting the lower face and jawline, excessive hair growth (hirsutism), and female pattern hair loss. By blocking the effects of androgens, spironolactone helps reduce oil production, slow hair follicle miniaturisation, and improve unwanted hair growth.” She adds that it isn't routinely prescribed to men because of those same anti-androgen effects, which can lead to side effects including breast enlargement, reduced libido and sexual dysfunction.

It's gone viral online for a reason; it really does work. Partnerships Manager Molly Jappy, 27, tried everything to treat her hormonal acne, which was caused by Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). “I spent 10 years trying every treatment and ointment, including Accutane, antibiotics, topical treatments, supplements and endless skincare products to no avail,” she tells Marie Claire UK. “I felt hopeless until I discovered spironolactone. I’ve had clear skin ever since. My confidence has just soared.”

Similarly, journalist and beauty expert Kristina Rodulfo found that her nodular, cystic acne wasn't responding to over-the-counter skincare. She eventually discovered spironolactone, which she took on and off over the next eight years. “Results typically show at the three-month mark and the difference was dramatic. I went from having anywhere from 15-20 painful, red cysts all across my jawline to having smooth, clear skin. Similar to the way people describe GLP-1 treatments as erasing "food noise", spironolactone erased the mental load of acne. I was no longer stressing and monitoring my diet for triggers, or combing over every single ingredient in my skincare and make-up.”

Kristina has since gone off the medication, however—citing side-effects from the anti-androgen properties that make it so effective. In combination with her contraceptive IUD, she found that spironolactone made her menstrual cycle irregular and, at times, caused it to disappear altogether. "Before planning for a family, I wanted to come off it and get my body's reproductive health and hormones back to baseline," she says. "But I do think I'll go back on it eventually because it was the most effective acne treatment I've ever tried."

While Consultant Dermatologist and Renew + Me ambassador, Dr Malvina Cunningham states that many people tolerate spironolactone well, she notes that Rodulfo's experience is not uncommon. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all, despite what social media is saying. Acne is a complex condition, and what works well for one person may not be suitable or effective for another.”

The most common side effects include increased urination (the medication is a diuretic), as well as breast tenderness, menstrual irregularities, headaches, dizziness and fatigue. However, there are also more serious side effects to consider.

Dr Christine Hall, a GP and aesthetic doctor who has taken spironolactone herself, stresses that the medication should only be used under appropriate medical supervision. "I have seen many hospital admissions, particularly in older people, where the cause has been this drug," she states. “In many cases, it is good practice to carry out blood tests before and during treatment. One of the key concerns with spironolactone is that it can affect and elevate blood potassium levels. Elevated potassium levels, known as hyperkalemia, must be monitored carefully because, if left unchecked, they can lead to serious complications, including abnormal heart rhythms and, in severe cases, death.”

Accordingly, it is generally not prescribed to people with certain underlying health conditions, including kidney disease, where the risk of elevated potassium levels is higher, or those with very low blood pressure. It is also not recommended during pregnancy, breastfeeding or while trying to conceive.

Interestingly, another less common side-effect that has been widely discussed on social media is breast enlargement. “It can happen because spironolactone’s anti-androgen effects alter the balance between androgens and oestrogen,” explains Dr Laftah. “In women, this may lead to a feeling of fullness or a modest increase in breast size, although this is not a universal side effect and is typically mild.” She adds that, in most cases, any breast enlargement associated with spironolactone improves or resolves once the medication is discontinued.

Out of the nine women I spoke to for this feature, only two reported mild side effects, including increased urination and occasional light-headedness. What may prove more prohibitive, however, is accessing the treatment itself.

Spironolactone is prescribed off-label for acne and is typically recommended by a dermatologist following an assessment. While it can be prescribed through the NHS, many people access it privately. All but one of the women I spoke to had received their prescription through a private dermatologist. The exception was Molly, who was eventually able to access it on the NHS following a PCOS diagnosis. Several cited NHS waiting times and administrative hurdles as reasons for going private.

"The biggest issue was actually getting hold of it," says 29-year-old writer Amber Rawlings. "There's so much red tape. I didn't even try going through the NHS because I'd heard it could take months, so I went straight to a private dermatologist. It was extremely expensive.”

While spironolactone itself is relatively inexpensive, the overall cost is driven by consultations, blood monitoring and follow-up appointments. Typically, an initial dermatology consultation can range from £200 to £350, while subsequent appointments may cost £100 to £250, depending on the clinic.

It was worth it for Amber, though: “I went from having skin that I was constantly fixating on to skin that I didn't have to think about at all. And honestly, that changes your whole existence. If you’re a suitable candidate for it, I’d recommend it in a heartbeat.”

But, of course, spironolactone is not the only solution for hormonal acne. As Dr Hall asserts, before even considering it, individuals should see a dermatologist and get an accurate diagnosis of the type of acne they have. “That’s really the key to finding the right treatment," she says. "In general, we like to start with the least invasive approach first. That means making sure someone is using the right over-the-counter skincare products and that their routine has been properly optimised. If that's not enough, we would usually consider adding topical prescription treatments. Oral medications are typically reserved for situations where they are genuinely needed.”

Luke Hersheson is undoubtedly one of the most esteemed names in British hairdressing. As CEO of Hershesons—the salon group that has shaped the way we think about hair for the better part of three decades—he has spent his career at the intersection of editorial, celebrity, and culture, with a client list most hairdressers could only dream of and an eye for the next it-girl haircut that has proved, time and again, to be about six months ahead of the curve.

The first salon he worked in, however, wasn't his own. It was his father Daniel's, on the King's Road in the 1980s—a place he was taken to every Saturday as a child, but rather than bored, he was inspired. "I was surrounded by loads of punks and mods," he says. "There were all these different kinds of tribes and looks that were like fascinating to me."

His father, far from grooming him for the industry, actively put obstacles in his way. He wanted to make sure Luke came to it for the right reasons—and it worked. When Luke eventually found his way to hairdressing, it was on his own terms, armed with a cultural curiosity that's never left him. Decades later, he has a client list that includes Victoria Beckham, Kylie Minogue, Keira Knightley, and Dua Lipa, and a salon empire that has rewritten the rules of what a hair appointment can look like. Here, he reflects on the cuts, the clients, and everything in between.

The shoot that changed everything

Luke had been working steadily—Sunday papers, a few pages for The Face, some i-D—when a booking came in that would change the shape of his career entirely. A shoot with renowned photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, featuring supermodel Gisele Bündchen and a then-unknown Charlotte Tilbury on makeup. "That was my first break," he says simply. "It catapulted me to really understand what great models and great photographers were, and how it made everything look better."

He's candid about how insecure he felt on set. "I had huge imposter syndrome. I got thrown into it at a very young age." The experience functioned less like a launch and more like an apprenticeship—a crash course in high-level creative collaboration. "I was just trying to be a sponge and soak up as much as possible. All their references, all their ideas. If I had the confidence then that I have now, it would have been amazing. But that's what time gives you."

Soon after, Luke booked his first shoot with photographer David Sims, which required him to cut a model's hair off—a model who didn't particularly want it to be cut. "It was kind of emotional," he says. "There was a huge responsibility. But the resulting images were extraordinary."

What the experience really taught him was about the importance of composure. "It was all about confidence. You need a bit of swagger, a bit of arrogance—but you also need to know your stuff." And when it comes to creative direction, he's developed a philosophy he still stands by today: never say no. "The worst that can happen is it doesn't work. But if you show willing, people want to collaborate with you. They want you on set."

The Body Language era

Kylie Minogue's Body Language era—i.e. latex bodysuits and caramel waves—remains one of the most referenced aesthetic moments of the early 2000s. Luke worked closely with her stylist William Baker to design the look from scratch. "We designed it around Bardot hair," he says, "and I suppose that was before that thing even became what it became—really before that hair look became synonymous with the next couple of decades."

For Luke, the lesson wasn't just about iconography. It was about the gap between editorial trend cycles and how change actually moves. "When you look at macro trends in the salon or on the street, they evolve much slower than you think—over a few years, not every season."

The bob that broke the internet

In 2015, Luke cut Victoria Beckham's hair into what became one of the most copied haircuts of the decade. "Bobs were just coming in," he says. "We were coming out of this moment of long hair." He'd cut Sienna Miller's bob not long before, and Alexa Chung had been rocking hers for years. But when Beckham went for the chop, something really resonated.

"It was a moment of minimalism and effortlessness—you can have a great haircut and look like you don't need to style it." The collaboration itself was very much two-way. "I think I came up with the 'why don't we chop it off?' And she was up for it, strangely. One of those magic moments." He's equally clear about what makes Beckham such a singular client: "She has a very strong sensibility of what she likes and what she doesn't like. That's what makes her brilliant."

Long-term relationships, he says, are where the best work happens. "There's a trust that's magical. The fear of trying things out doesn't exist. I think that's when you do your best work."

The blow-dry bar boom

The early-to-mid 2000s congestion charge hit London's salons hard. Footfall dropped, and appointments slowly declined. And out of that pressure came something that would redefine the salon experience for the next generation. Daniel Hersheson came up with the concept of a blow-dry bar inside Topshop; Luke designed the menu—and together, they spotted the gap nobody else had seen. "Going for a blow dry in most salons meant a round brush blow dry, and everyone looked the same. Whereas we knew people wanted a beach wave, or a great messy updo, or a braid."

It was an immediate hit. "Everyone was like, 'Oh my god, why didn't we think of that?'" The ripple effect across the industry was tangible—hair menus became standard, and salons were suddenly expected to offer a variety of finishes and styles. "People demanded more from a hairdresser. It wasn't just a bouncy blow-dry anymore."

Dua, YSL, and the wig no one knew was a wig

More recently, Luke worked on a global YSL campaign with Dua Lipa—an experience that proved to be a different creative context entirely—more of a collaborative machine than a single person's vision. "There are so many ad agencies and creative directors involved," Luke says. "You're really just taking direction at that point." But there's a detail he's happy to reveal: the iconic bob in that campaign wasn't Dua's hair. "It was a wig. She'd grown her hair much longer and they wanted the bob back. You'd never know."

Lessons on great hair

While Hershesons has grown into an empire of three salons and a namesake brand of hair tools and products, Luke's ethos hasn't shifted since the King's Road days. "I hate that some people think they have to get a blow dry to make their hair look good," he says. "Put some Almost Everything Cream on, spritz it with Air Dry Spray, tuck it behind your ears. Work with your natural texture and don't labour over it—it should look like part of you. I think that's what's timeless."

I'm notoriously disloyal to my primers. I'll use one every single time I do my makeup for a month, then forget the category ever existed for the next three, while I obsess over a new discovery. In any case, I've never really viewed them as an essential, mostly because I've been lucky enough to have pretty unproblematic skin.

However, over the last year, I’ve noticed some pore widening that can come with ageing, and those first lines creeping in around my eyes. I can cope with the lines, but the appearance of my pores is making me dread a close-up. I always assumed that because pore size is largely genetically determined, there was not much I could do about them. I quickly discovered, to my delight, that it not only addressed my widening pores and helped my makeup sit better, but also did much, much more.

It literally instantly eradicates the appearance of enlarged pores, without that horrible silicone texture that makes my skin crawl. Instead, it feels lightweight and cooling on the skin. It contains a cooling herbal complex to minimise the appearance of pores by lowering skin temperature and making skin feel instantly refreshed. How to apply the Tirtir Flawless Pore Prep Primer

You could apply this with your fingers, but I like to press it on and blend with a dry beauty blender sponge, as you would do with a foundation. You apply it after your chosen SPF, and before any foundations or concealers.

It feels so good on the skin—cooling and refreshing, and just like a moisturiser—so there’s a temptation to apply more than you need. Just a couple of pumps will do just fine.

A beauty editor’s honest review

I don’t use the word ‘magic’ lightly, but there's no other way I can aptly describe the results. I cannot believe how easily it made my pores disappear, all while feeling just like a light cream.

I don't know why I was quite so surprised—the formula has, in fact, been clinically tested for pore reduction and promises a 69.11% reduction in pore size immediately after use, which really is quite a staggering result. Plus, 50.73% of this effect is maintained after 24 hours, so you could apply it in the morning before work, and it will still be doing its thing (albeit less so) when you come to top up your makeup for dinner and drinks (as I can attest).

When I’m wearing this primer, I am so happy with how my pores look (i.e., basically non-existent). But above that, I love how it instantly mattifies the skin in a soft, hydrated way that makes the skin look uniform across the board while still allowing your natural luminosity to come through in a diffused way. My skin isn’t flat-looking; it’s just even, and not shiny or glowy. I also feel that the way it lowers the temperature of your skin (by 4.76 Degrees Celsius) also has a firming effect on the skin, or at least it looks like it does.

I've been so taken with this primer that I've already bought a backup in case I unexpectedly run out or leave it behind on my summer travels. I can't imagine going a day without it.

The Verdict: a beauty editor’s honest review

It’s bronzing perfection, and apart from the lack of a mirror, I can’t think of a single thing wrong with it. I also can’t think of a skin type for which this wouldn’t be a suitable product. No matter how textured or oily your skin is, this will look great on you. It’s universally flattering.

I know eight shades doesn’t sound like many, but each is so versatile and works across the entire span of complexions out there – which shade you choose solely depends on how dark you want the bronzing to look. You could choose a darker one for the summer months and a lighter one for the winter months.

This has overtaken my previous front-runner (the Adored by Buttery Bronze Stick cream bronzer in case you were wondering) to become my favourite bronzer of all time. Stay out of the sun, kids, and use this to get that bronzed glow instead.

Whether you're an early adopter or loyal to your bi-weekly salon appointment, it can't be denied: the bare nail aesthetic is everywhere. Summer is upon us, and with it comes a familiar beauty dilemma: how do you top up your SPF without ruining your make-up?

We all know how important it is to use sunscreen, but during high summer, it's regular re-application that is key. Of course, SPF has long had a bad reputation for being greasy, leaving a white cast and being a pain to use over make-up, but I come bearing good news: this is no longer the case. A slew of new formulas have made both application and re-application a doddle. Often infused with skin-loving ingredients, these next-gen products work effortlessly over make-up and can even double as setting sprays. So, without further ado, the best SPF mists on the market.

The old adage that eyebrows are sisters, not twins, is not one that celebrity brow artist Hollie Parkes adheres to. In fact, after stepping out of her studio at Claridge's following her £400 Brow Spa treatment, my eyebrows have never looked more identical; there wasn't a single hair out of place.

But what exactly is a "Brow Spa"? Parkes tells me she wanted to completely reframe the brow styling experience and create something that felt both results-driven and deeply relaxing. Indeed, her dimly lit room at Claridge's is a world away from my usual threading setup at the local nail salon. Here, an entire hour and a half is devoted solely to the hair above my eyes.

As Parkes explains: "Brows sit on top of muscle and skin, yet those layers are often overlooked. We hold so much tension in the forehead, temples and brow bone, and releasing that can bring an incredible sense of lightness and lift to the face. The Brow Spa was designed to treat the foundation first. By preparing the skin properly, improving circulation and releasing tension, we're able to create a healthier environment for brow growth while also achieving better, longer-lasting styling results."

The treatment begins with Parkes removing my make-up before moving on to a facial massage using a gua sha, lymphatic drainage techniques and cooling cryo globes to de-puff the area. Then she really gets to work. She analyses my face shape and meticulously sketches out my eyebrows using a ruler. First, she does this with me lying down, then perfects the shape once I sit up, ensuring both brows are as close to symmetrical as possible.

Next comes the shaping itself. I go for threading, though waxing is also an option. This is the longest portion of the appointment, and Parkes works with laser precision, following up with tweezers to ensure every last hair is perfectly preened. She then applies a brow mask and under-eye patches, before I spend 20 minutes under LED lights. Finally, a sweep of eye cream finishes the treatment.

I leave feeling 10 steps lighter. Is it an indulgence? Absolutely. But it does leave me thinking differently about my brows, which I usually overlook in favour of extensive skincare routines and regular blow-dries. While I won't be making a habit of this experience, Parkes' commitment to precision left me inspired—I will not be skipping my next threading appointment.

Come summer, I become obsessed with growing out my hair. There's no better accompaniment to sunny days than ultra-long, mermaid-esque locks, right? Keeping them healthy and free of split ends, though, is another matter.

The longer your hair, the more likely it is to be damaged and of lesser quality. It makes sense, the hair at the bottom is often a lot older than your roots, of course. And when you add in colouring, bleaching and heat styling, it becomes a lot more difficult to keep it looking and feeling healthy.

I've always supplemented with oils and leave-in conditioners but in recent years I've steered clear of nourishing shampoos and conditioners. It may sound counter-intuitive but I found that these rich, moisturising products would leave my hair flat and incapable of holding volume. Well, that was until I discovered my holy-grail haircare range: Davines' MOMO line, which I've now been testing for six months.
