It's no secret that as a beauty editor, I am extremely fortunate to receive hundreds of products each week. From the latest K-beauty drops to uplifting fragrances that brighten my mood.

However, over the years, I have found my favourites—the products that I can't live without. The hair serum that delivers unparalleled smoothness, the retinol I benchmark against, and the low-maintenance lip product I recommend to anyone who will listen. I don't wait to see if these will arrive in the beauty cupboard; these are the ones that I repeatedly add to baskets throughout the year.

I’ll admit it - my default reaction to viral wellness trends is usually an eye-roll. As a Health Writer, I’ve seen more than my fair share of glow-up challenges promising life-changing results, only to serve up a cocktail of restriction, unrealistic goals, and diet culture disguised as discipline.

So when the “Great Lock-In” started dominating my feeds, and Google searches spiked over 1000% in just a month, I was ready to file it under "not another one." Like the Operation 66 or many, many flavours of the 75 Hard (we're looking at you, medium, soft and hotter) challenge before it.

But here’s the thing: when I actually looked into it, I was surprised. Unlike its stricter predecessors, the great lock-in doesn’t come with a set of rules. Some creators lean into the classic extremes of cold showers, sugar bans and 5 am starts, but many others are using it as a softer opportunity to reset by drinking more water, moving regularly, meditating daily and prepping proper meals after a busy summer.

In that sense, locking in is less a challenge and more a mindset. The only consistent thread is that it’s rooted in two powerful psychological principles: goal-setting theory and habit formation. Goal-setting, first explored by psychologists Locke and Latham in the 1960s, shows that specific, time-bound goals make us far more likely to succeed. And as for habits? A 2024 study confirmed that long-term change comes from two to five months of small, consistent actions, not a frantic three-week sprint.

With the Great Lock-In running from September through to New Year’s Eve, it’s actually well-timed to build those routines and avoid any kind of panic come January.

But there’s a catch (of course, there is). Research from 2021 warns that performance-based goals (ones where we chase a specific result) can damage motivation if we slip up. In contrast, learning-based goals, which focus on the process, are far more sustainable. The problem with content-led trends like the Great Lock In is that they can easily shift from personal development into performative progress. When your goals become about what you post, the line between what feels good and what looks good gets blurry.

So, if you’re wondering whether to join the throngs of people locking in this autumn, read on. Below, I spoke to therapists, nervous system specialists and fitness experts to find out if and how you can get involved in a positive and healthy, rather than pressurising or performative, way.

What is The Great Lock In challenge?

According to Sam Boatwright, personal trainer and co-founder of Brown Bag Protein, "the Great Lock In is simply a self-improvement challenge which encourages individuals to set and commit to their goals for the last four months of the year."

"The idea is that by getting your head down and committing to clear, structured goals until 31st December, you’ll enter the New Year as the healthiest version of yourself," he explains.

And while many of the goals you’ll see circulating online are fitness-focused, "this period of hibernation can be used to focus on all areas of self-improvement," adds Ben Mounsey, Strava athlete and trail marketing lead at SportsShoes.

What does the Great Lock In involve?

Now that you’ve got the gist of what the Great Lock In is in theory, you might be wondering what it actually looks like in practice.

The truth is, it’s entirely individual. The challenge is designed to be tailored to your personal goals and lifestyle. You could choose some of the popular commitments being made by creators, below, or you could opt for something that aligns better with the person you want to be in the next few months.

• Walking 10,000 steps a day
• Drinking two litres of water
• Committing to three to five workouts a week
• Eating whole foods, such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains and unprocessed meats with every meal
• Leaving your phone outside your bedroom overnight
• Aiming for eight to ten hours of sleep per night
• Daily journalling

All this is to say that there are endless possible ways you could lock in. If financial wellbeing is more of a priority right now, focus there. If meditation is your thing, start a daily practice. It’s yours to shape.

What do the experts think of the trend?

“I’m quite conflicted about it,” says therapist Lauren Young, who acknowledges the appeal. “Setting concrete rules can feel safer than ambiguity, especially if you’re struggling. But we have to be careful not to mistake burnout as a personal productivity problem to be solved by disciplined self-optimisation.”

Somatic therapist and nervous system specialist, Phoebe Greenacre, agrees. “I’m all for a reset, and having a clear start date can feel exciting. That said, it’s very easy for people to push too hard and tip into survival mode.”

She warns that whilst initial motivation can be powerful, “ignoring your body’s signals and pushing through when you’re exhausted can lead to stress, burnout and shame if you can’t keep up or life gets in the way.”

Instead, Young says real progress comes from “learning to be flexible with your goals, listening to your body and knowing you can rest without earning it, using a lens of self-compassion rather than self-discipline.”

What are the benefits of The Great Lock In?

Of course, the experts recognise that there are plenty of benefits to giving the challenge a go, including fresh motivation, a sense of community, improved physical health and mental clarity.

1. Structure through the darker months

We all know how hard it is to keep healthy habits going in the winter, especially when it comes to exercise. Whether concerned about safety in the dark or put off by the cold, damp temperatures, two-thirds of us exercise less in these last few months, according to research from Women in Sport.

“When autumn hits and the days get shorter, a lot of us feel a bit lost and unmotivated,” says Young. “Having clear daily goals gives you something tangible to focus on, which can be genuinely grounding when everything else feels vague or overwhelming.”

2. Community support

While TikTok-led trends can be a breeding ground for comparison and competition, they can also offer genuine camaraderie.

“Locking in alongside others creates accountability and connection. When you're struggling, seeing other people work towards similar goals normalises the effort and makes it feel less lonely,” says Young.

3. Better sleep

There’s no disputing that sleep is a superpower, with research linking a consistent seven to nine hours a night to lower stress levels, healthier body composition, reduced chance of cardiovascular conditions and even a lower risk of early death.

“So many people are chronically exhausted but feel guilty about resting,” says Young. “Having a challenge that tells you to sleep more gives you permission to prioritise something your body desperately needs.”

4. Mental clarity

Greenacre adds that focusing on a few clear goals can help us to resist the more-is-more mindset.

“When you’re feeling scattered, choosing one or two goals makes life feel less noisy,” she explains.

It’s all down to ‘cognitive constraints’ in our brain, which show up when multiple goals become too much for our attention, memory and processing abilities, with research showing that this reduces our chance of success in any one of our individual goals.

Are there any risks to The Great Lock In?

As you might have guessed, for every benefit, there’s a potential downside. Here’s what to look out for.

1. All or nothing thinking

Research consistently links perfectionism to higher levels of burnout. Characterised by unrelenting high standards and an all or nothing mindset, these traits are given a field day when we set rules for ourselves.

“Setting yourself rigid rules is what causes burnout in the first place,” explains Young. “If missing one workout leads you to feel like a failure or fall into a shame spiral, then it just reinforces the misconception that you’re not good enough.”

And as Boatwright explains, this “feeling of failure” can be counterproductive because it “leads to people falling back into old habits and losing motivation to continue with any positive lifestyle changes.”

2. Social withdrawal

The term “lock in” is being taken literally by some, with creators opting out of social plans to stay focused. But social connection is vital for our mental health, especially as we head into winter.

“If you're turning down dinner with friends because there might be restricted foods, or you can't relax because you haven't hit your steps yet, the challenge is working against genuine wellbeing,” says Young.

3. Injury

Making drastic changes to your fitness habits too quickly is a one-way ticket to injury, as Boatwright points out. “These challenges make it easy to think that the more you train, lift or cut out, the more weight you’ll lose or the stronger you’ll get. This attitude can lead to compromised rest and recovery, which can negatively impact performance and results.”

Mounsey agrees. “As much as you might want to lock in after a slower summer, you must allow time for your body to adapt to increased levels of physical activity. Prioritising rest, as well as incorporating different methods of training, will help to build up strength and prevent injuries.”

4. Comparison

As with all social media trends, it’s crucial to remember that what’s shared online is a highlight reel and not the reality of someone’s day-to-day life.

“Watching others thrive can trigger the 'I’m behind' feeling,” says Greenacre, whilst Young reminds us that one size never fits all. “Three litres of water is excessive for some people, whilst nine hours of sleep isn't realistic for parents of young children,” she explains. “Going by rules you’ve found online risks ignoring your individual circumstances. If not managed, it can lead you to feel that you’re not meeting fixed standards that might not even be appropriate for you.”

How can I take part in The Great Lock In in a way that feels positive for me?

With both pros and cons to locking in, the experts are clear that there are ways to get involved with the trend without harming your mental or physical health.

1. Pick one meaningful goal

“Instead of trying to overhaul everything, take small, steady steps towards something that matters to you,” says Greenacre, who explains that having a personal connection to your goal is a key ingredient for success. Research backs her up; a strong why behind your goal helps sustain focus, attention and motivation over time.

2. Consider your starting point

This is particularly important for any physical goals you set yourself, but can be applied across all areas of self-improvement.

When it comes to fitness, “how many workouts you aim to complete each week is heavily dependent on your current fitness regime,” Boatwright explains. “If you exercise frequently already, you could aim to do one or two extra workouts each week or try a new form of exercise. If you’re a beginner, aim for two workouts per week - this could be a gym class or weight training - whilst increasing your steps each day too.”

Like Greenacre, Boatwright emphasises that gradual change beats drastic overhauls. “Starting small makes it easier to gradually increase the amount of exercise you complete each week as time goes on. For example, by month two, you could be feeling much more comfortable adding that extra workout to your weekly schedule.”

3. Schedule downtime

Rest days are essential for both our physical and mental health, which is why, whether your goals are fitness-related or not, having time to switch off is important for long-term success.

“Your downtime should be scheduled in the same way as your work,” says Greenacre. “This makes sure it remains a priority and your nervous system gets time to recover.”

Young likes the idea of including a specific "no rules" day once a week to practice flexibility and prevent rigidity from taking over. But whether you prefer to build in flexibility daily, or have a designated off day, she reminds us that “focusing on goals which add rather than eliminate, like walks, water and rest,” are all good ways to maintain a positive lock-in period.

4. Stay flexible

Finally, and most importantly, “treat this as an experiment where you're gathering data about what helps you specifically, not as a test of your worth or willpower,” says Young. “Adapt the rules to fit your life rather than forcing yourself into someone else's template.” She adds: “If you find yourself getting anxious about ‘breaking rules,’ or are withdrawing from social connections to maintain the challenge, these are red flags; a sign to step back to gain some perspective.”

Greenacre agrees. “Life happens, and it’s always better to adapt than to give up completely. You’re human, not a machine, and growth still counts even if it’s slower.”

Our verdict

The Great Lock In has all the hallmarks of a "better" kind of glow-up challenge: one that’s more personal, flexible and potentially more sustainable. But, like most social media trends, it comes with caveats.

There’s no harm in taking inspiration from the creators you see online. But if it leads you into a comparison, it's much harder to tune into what your own body needs.

So if you are keen to use these last few months of the year to make progress on something which really matters to you, then I say go for it - just make sure to keep checking in with yourself along the way.

Are your goals still making you feel good? Are they still working for you? If not, it’s okay to change them. You’re allowed to lock in, but you definitely don’t need to lock yourself down.

Last year, we renovated our house. It cost a fortune. So holidays abroad were well and truly put on hold. As a result, I have become a dab hand at faking that gorgeous glow that you really only get after a week or two on holiday. I'm talking unrivalled radiance, sun-kissed cheeks and golden limbs that make every outfit look better.

1. Tanning drops

My love of self-tan started with tanning drops. As a naturally fair 'English rose', I had always been incredibly nervous of fake tan and the inevitable mishaps that come with it. However, when I was introduced to the Isle Of Paradise Self Tanning Drops, I liked that they gave me the sense of control. It wasn't long before these little drops of sunshine became a firm fixture in my everyday skincare routine. I believe the recommendation is to use them every other day, but a few drops in my moisturiser every morning means that my skin always has a lovely, glowy canvas to apply the rest of my products. To avoid any obvious tell-tale signs around my hairline, I use a big kabuki brush to buff my moisturiser and tanning drops in, which allows for a more natural finish.

2. Tinted SPF

Once I've applied my moisturiser, laced with tanning drops, I go in with my SPF. I've always loved a product that does more, and a base product with added sun protection is right up my street. Heliocare's 360 Colour Water Gel Bronze SPF50+ gives my skin just the right amount of coverage, evens out any irregular tone in an instant and blends in beautifully. The texture is similar to a lightweight foundation, so once I've applied it with my hands, I often buff it in with a foundation brush in areas that need thinning out slightly, like around my nose. You can use it as a primer, as I like to, tapped in as a highlighter or mixed in with your foundation for a more subtle finish. 4. Cream bronzer

Bronzer is arguably the must-have product in any glowing skin routine. Everybody has a preferred texture; mine will always be cream. I have dry and often dehydrated skin, so I prefer cream and liquid textures that won't settle in dry patches or fine lines. I couldn't write about tanned-looking skin without including Chanel's mega (in size and results) Les Beiges Healthy Glow Bronzing Cream. Not only does it give a natural-looking effect (which is down to its velvet matte finish), but it lasts and lasts, so is worth the investment. Earlier this year, the shade range grew, meaning it finally works for all skin tones. I can't ignore the fact that this giant bronzer does not travel well, so when I'm away from home or on the go, I use the Westman Atelier Face Trace Contour Stick in Truffle. This twist-up cream bronzer has a slightly dewier finish compared to Chanel's, but the pigment payoff is great, and stick formulations make for easy application.

6. Blonzer

In the middle of last summer, blonzing (a technique that blends bronzer and blusher together) became a viral make-up trend. Whilst you can of course use your favourites from your make-up bag to create this look, in my opinion, the Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Blonzer is the only product you will ever need. Since this blusher bronzer hybrid came into my life I haven't touched another blusher. I still like to use a little bit of bronzer before to really solidify a sunkissed face, but this hydrating, radiance-boosting liquid blonzer is the best thing I've ever put onto my cheeks. It also has seriously impressive staying power. I can apply it in the morning and it will still be there at 4pm later that day. My preferred shade is Kiss of Pink, which definitely leans more towards blush than bronze, but there are four other colours, some of which have more golden pigment in them if that sounds more up your street.

6. Instant tan

For the majority of the year, I have very little body on show, so I rarely do a full body tan. Instead, I take an almost paint-by-numbers approach to the parts that are seen. For example, in spring, when it's just warm enough to wear a sleeveless top with a jacket, you bet that it's only my arms getting the bronzing treatment. And come summer, when my legs, arms, shoulders and décolletage are on show, I will still just add colour to those areas. My favourite way to do this is with instant tan that I can wash off at the end of the day (patchy, paint-by-numbers tan doesn't look so great when you're naked in front of a full-length mirror). The thing that makes a really great instant tan is one that will not transfer onto your clothes. There are two that I have on rotation, and they each play a different role. As a serial flats wearer, I've been patiently waiting for a comfortable summer shoe to find mainstream favour—and that day has finally come. I can't go more than a few scrolls down my Instagram feed at the moment without seeing at least one fashion influencer sporting a pair of Havaianas flip flops, signalling that the humble minimalist shoe is here to stay.

I've always found summer sandals to be particularly tricky to shop for; very few are as supportive and practical as trainers, particularly if you live in a city and spend a lot of time on your feet. I bought my first pair of Havaianas last summer after failing to find any other warm weather shoes that suited my style, and I genuinely dreaded the day I had to pack them away for winter. With products like SPF moisturisers and retinol serums in particular, using something that differs from what it says on the label can be extremely risky, especially for those with sensitive or problematic skin. Moreover, no one wants to be spending money on something that has been falsely advertised.

However, once you know how to differentiate the real deal from the fakes, it's very easy to ensure each and every Amazon purchase you make is authentic. As a Shopping Editor who spends a lot of time browsing beauty online, I've become very familiar with what the listings for legitimate products look like. And with Prime Day now in full swing, there's no time like the present to ensure anything you buy is exactly what you're hoping for.

How to spot a legitimate Amazon retailer

Since Amazon is a marketplace open to third-party sellers, it can be tricky to regulate. This means that there are countless illegitimate listings, ranging from convincing dupes to false product pages. Although many brands try their best to prevent this from happening, there are always some items that slip through the cracks.

If you do a lot of shopping on Amazon, particularly for beauty, you can't assume that every branded product is the real thing. This is my foolproof guide to shopping legitimate beauty products on Amazon, and the things you should avoid.

1. Check the storefront

My first tip is by far the most important—follow this step and you're almost certainly going to be purchasing a legitimate product. Every brand with genuine items on Amazon will have a storefront, which is a landing page dedicated to the brand where you can shop all of its products.

When on a product page, you will see a link right underneath the product name that says 'Visit the [brand name] store', or the brand's logo above the product name which is hyperlinked. Click on one of those, and it should take you through to the brand hub. If there is no link or dedicated brand page, it's most likely that the product you're viewing is from a reseller and is not legitimate.

Any established brand will have a storefront, so if you can't find it, it's best to avoid the product and shop through a different site.

2. Check the brand's verified sellers

Another way to ensure you're not getting duped is by verifying that the brand you're shopping does sell products on Amazon. The best way is to go directly to the brand's website and find its 'where to buy' section. Every brand that sells on other websites should have one, and if you see Amazon listed there, you're good to go. If there is no mention of products on Amazon anywhere on the website, again, it's worth shopping elsewhere.

3. Shop via the Amazon navigation bar

Rather than searching by product and clicking on the first one that comes up, you can use the Amazon navigation bar to get you to the right place. Select 'Health & Beauty' from the sidebar and go from there, or go via the Amazon beauty hub which will take you directly to the big brand storefronts.

These are all brands that are verified by Amazon and have gone through the necessary checks to ensure they're authentic.

4. Assess the imagery, description and packaging

If the imagery on the product page is very blurry, there's only one picture, or something about the item looks slightly off, that's another telltale sign that it's been listed by a third party reseller. All genuine product pages from authorised brands will have plenty of high quality images, lots of detail in the description, and additional details listed below it.

Take a close look at the photos and be sure that it looks exactly how it should and nothing is out of place. If you're purchasing a product you've previously owned, you're probably familiar with what the item should look like. Otherwise, it's worth looking at pictures from other sites to compare.

5. Make sure it isn't too good to be true

You can find some brilliant deals on Amazon, particularly when Prime Day rolls around, but it's worth being wary of offers that seem too good to be true. This is especially important with high end or luxury products. If it's outrageously reduced, far beyond any offer you've seen before elsewhere, it probably isn't the real thing.

6. Check reviews

I'll let you in on a little secret. Despite being a Health Editor with nearly ten years of experience under my belt, I have a bit of an aversion to fitness challenges. While some can be motivating and help you to reignite your passion for movement and wellbeing, I find the vast majority of them impossible to stick to, too generalised to see any legitimate results, or invented by a content creator without the relevant qualifications. That was, of course, until I stumbled across the trending "Winter Arc" challenge.

Brought to my attention by Team MC's savvy Social Media Editor, Dionne, the premise of the challenge is simple: to use the colder months from now until Christmas to prioritise your health and wellbeing, using the change of season as a catalyst for - yep, you guessed it - change.

Unlike other fitness challenges I've seen doing the rounds this year (I'm looking at you, 75 Hard), the winter arc isn't prescriptive. There are no rules, and you don't have to cut anything out; rather, it's about leveraging the colder months to lock in habits that make you feel good, physically and mentally. Approaching healthy living joyfully and mindfully, the challenge encourages you to cement a healthy routine - the idea being that, come the new year, when you're hit with the onslaught of "New Year, New Me" messaging, you're already in a healthy and regular routine.

I've been trying my very own winter arc challenge and can't tell you how much calmer, healthier and happier I feel in both body and mind. I'm normally anti fitness challenges - but the winter arc has me well and truly sold

What is the winter arc challenge?

According to Lucie Cowan, personal trainer and Cycle Master Trainer at Third Space, "the winter arc challenge is a trending concept that encourages people to focus on self-improvement throughout the fall and winter months rather than waiting for New Year’s resolutions."

In essence, it's all about embracing the colder months as an opportunity to prioritise both exercise and mental health, adds personal trainer and KXU coach Louis Quaye. "Instead of slowing down, it promotes staying active despite the challenges of colder temperatures and reduced daylight hours," he goes on.

Where did the winter arc challenge originate from?

According to Quaye, the concept is inspired by practices from colder Nordic countries, where outdoor activities during harsh winters are common. Cowan adds: "It's gained popularity on TikTok, largely driven by fitness and wellness influencers and inspired by the idea of character arcs in fiction."

What does the winter arc involve?

You're clued up on what the winter arc challenge is. Now, question: what could it actually look like for you?

The beauty of the challenge is that it's meant to be tailored to you, your personal goals, and your preferred lifestyle. As an example, you could choose any of the following and aim to do them each week before the end of the year.

• Committing to daily exercise
• Aiming for eight hours of sleep
• Eating protein and vegetables with each meal
• Drinking two litres of water
• Practicing daily mindfulness
• Avoiding screens before bed
• Starting the day with some sunlight
• Reading ten chapters of your book a day.

That said, the possibilities really are endless. If you know you feel best starting each day with a relaxing yoga flow, you do you. If you're more of a high-intensity person, you might like to add some circuit workouts to your weekly rotation.

What are the benefits of doing the winter arc?

As Cowan points out, there are loads of benefits to giving the challenge a go, including improved discipline, physical health, and mental clarity. Plus, did you know? "Research suggests that forming habits during colder months can be particularly effective due to fewer social distractions," she goes on. "One paper published in The European Journal of Social Psychology found that forming habits takes an average of 66 days, making winter a good window to focus on new routines."

1. Boosted physical health

Naturally, if you're making more time to exercise regularly, you'll likely notice an improvement in your general fitness - especially in the colder months, and not just because that's the best time to make a habit stick. "Regular exercise during the colder months can improve cardiovascular health and strengthen the immune system," explains Cowan.

Case in point: one study from the Journal of Sports Science found that maintaining a workout routine during winter reduces the risk of heart disease.

2. Better sleep

Establishing a healthy sleep routine is a key element of the winter arc, shares Cowan, and there's plenty of evidence to prove that increasing both the quality and duration of your sleep can only be a good thing. "Research published in the Sleep Medicine Review journal shows that improved sleep hygiene can reduce stress and enhance overall well-being," shares the expert.

3. Enhanced mental clarity

Being consistent with your routine has been found to boost mental wellbeing and improve focus, too. "Studies from Harvard Health indicates that mindfulness can significantly lower anxiety and depression, promoting mental clarity," explains Cowan.

4. And lower stress levels, too

Last but by no means least, committing to wellbeing practices during winter can alleviate the stress that often accompanies this season, shares the trainer. "A study in The American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine found that consistent self-care and stress management techniques can lower cortisol levels and improve mood," she concludes.

That said, Cowan does warn that it's important not to set goals that are unrealistic or too demanding, as you'll risk burnout. Pair that with the increased risk of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) in winter, which can exacerbate low mood or energy and make it harder to stick to a routine, and you'll see that the winter arc isn't for everyone.

Bottom line: It's important to remember that life is all about balance, and if the challenge does start to feel too prescriptive, then it might not be for you. Take note of how you're feeling each day and make sure to acknowledge if it's feeling overly demanding or like it's promoting toxic productivity at any point. Nothing is more important than your general wellbeing, after all.

Who should try the winter arc challenge?

Anyone and everyone, but particularly fitness enthusiasts who are looking to maintain or enhance physical health, shares the PT. "It's also great for anyone wanting to establish long-term, productive habits before the New Year," she goes on.

Quaye agrees, adding that he'd recommend the winter arc to anyone looking for a fitness challenge or a way to stay active during the colder months. "It’s particularly helpful for those who want to combat winter-related mood dips," he concludes.

I tried the winter arc challenge - and can't tell you how much it's boosted my mental and physical health

Weeks one to two

At the start of October, and after one of the busiest summers of my life, I knew I was desperately in need of some time at home focusing on my physical and emotional wellbeing. While I'd maintained a good base level of fitness over the summer months, strength training from home, running to work and heading to my local Parkrun when I could, I'd been travelling a lot, meaning I'd eaten a lot more service station meals than I cared to admit.

Pair the inconsistent nutrition with a spotty sleep routine, and I was excited to reset this autumn, prioritising the habits and routine that make me feel my best.

So, when the winter arc popped up on my TikTok FYP, my interest was piqued. After watching a few videos, I sat down with my wellness journal to lay out some guidelines. These were by no means rules - I'm of the opinion that lifestyle "rules" can be just as harmful as diet fads. Rather, they were guidelines to aim for every day that looked like:

• Daily movement, whether that be 10km steps, a run, or strength training
• Nutrient-dense meals centred around protein and fibre
• 2 litres of water a day
• No screens and ten pages of my book before bed.

Around about the same time, I was offered a Valencia Marathon place which really helped me to kick-start my new routine. Having an end goal - aka the marathon to run at the start of December - made me prioritise my training miles, fuelling my body adequately for the distance and getting enough sleep to allow my body to recover, too.

Two weeks in, and having banked 30 to 35-mile training weeks, eaten plenty of nutrient-dense meals, and nailed my sleep routine, I was feeling better than I had in months. My focus was clearer, I felt happier, and I found I was responding to stressful situations more calmly. Two weeks down, seven to go.

Weeks three to four

Come the second half of my October challenge and, in line with my marathon training plan, my mileage ramped up quite significantly. Week four included a strength training session, two five-mile easy runs, a nine-mile speedwork session, and an 18-mile long run. I've trained for and run nine marathons before, but that's not to say I don't still find the distances intimidating sometimes.

That's where the new routine really came into play. By going to bed earlier, I found getting up in the mornings to bank my mileage easier, plus found myself looking forward to my sessions with a renewed sense of purpose. Making this commitment to my health and wellbeing meant keeping my weekends largely free, bar one or two social events, which was also a welcome break from the back-to-back weddings and 30th celebrations of the summer.

While I've still got some way to go until the end of the year, I've been really pleased with how much better I've felt both mentally and physically since deciding to give this challenge a go. Sure, it won't be for everyone, but if you are at a point where you're keen to focus on yourself and your wellbeing for a couple of months, without the pressure of strict rules or pointless restrictions, then the winter arc could be for you. For me, it's been a welcome break after what's been a chaotic few months where, often, my health took a back seat.

It's true that my love for all things Pilates knows no bounds, and I'm honestly thrilled that the practice is enjoying a wave of popularity right now. Thanks, in part, to its A-list celebrity endorsements (Harry Styles, Adele, Hailey Bieber, Jen An - need we go on?) and social media, the century-old method of strengthening and lengthening has seemingly never been as popular, with Google searches for the term at breakout every month.

Unlike some TikTok crazes, the workout delivers legitimate benefits - studies (such as this one, published in the Journal of Physiology & Behaviour) show that the benefits of Pilates span both physical and psychological benefits, including improved core strength, balance and posture and stress relief, too. It's easy to see how so many of us are hooked, and with what seems like a new iteration every week (wall Pilates, contemporary Pilates, Cadillac Pilates and Tower Pilates, we're looking at you), you're sure to find a style that suits you.

While I'm partial to pretty much all variations of the trending workout, it's safe to say that one method in particular has my heart forever: Reformer Pilates. An hour spent stretching and contorting my body courtesy of the pulleys, springs and carriage of a Reformer machine is pretty much heaven in my eyes, and like its mat-based counterpart, it's great for body and mind. While research into Reformer Pilates itself is limited, some studies (like this one, published in the Cureus Journal of Medical Science) show that Reformer Pilates in particular is beneficial for lowering cholesterol and insulin resistance, alongside maintaining a healthy body composition.

There is a downside, though. A regular Reformer Pilates habit can come at an eye-watering cost, with classes setting you back upwards of £30 a session or more, if you fancy a coveted spot in an uber-cool London studio. So, when I was invited to try an at-home Reformer Pilates machine, I literally jumped at the chance (using carefully controlled, precise movements, naturally). Would an at-home machine yield the same mind-body benefits as my IRL classes? Would the novelty wear off? And - importantly - where on earth would I keep it?

My honest at-home Reformer Pilates machine review? I have some thoughts

What is an at home Reformer Pilates machine?

If the talk of an at-home Reformer machine has left you wondering what this looks like (and how on earth they fit in your home), allow us to explain. Much like the machines you'll be familiar with from studio classes, at-home Reformers consist of a moving carriage that looks a little like a bed (and in fact, the original Reformer machine was indeed a bed), with a headrest, weighted springs and pulleys attached.

"An at-home Reformer machine is a piece of Pilates equipment designed for home use, mirroring what is available in a studio," explains Pilates instructor Aleksandra Warburton. "It features a sliding carriage, differently weighted springs which you can adjust for resistance, and straps to assist or challenge movements, allowing for a wide variety of Pilates-based exercises, which target the whole body."

The Body Balance Metro IQ at-home Reformer machine that I tested

The difference with an at-home versus in-studio machine is, inevitably, the size and storage options. While it's totally possible to invest in a larger Cadillac (four post) machine, most of us will be looking for a piece on wheels, sitting low to the ground and that folds away for storage.

That's what the machine I tested was like - the Metro IQ from Balanced Body promises to be one of the easiest to shorten for storage, extending to 98 inches (249cm) during usage and folding down to 62 inches (157.48cm) when you're keen to put away. It also features handy wheels to make moving it around your space even easier.

Other need-to-knows: all of their machines feature five of their trademark springs (three red, one blue, and one yellow for a range of up to 46 tension options) and soft touch ropes, meaning that not only does the machine let you comfortably and easily adjust your settings. but it'll also be quieter than other at-home machine options.

It also comes with a two year warranty and weighs only 85lbs (or 39kg). While you can't add legs or the Tower add on to the Metro IQ Reformer, it is one of the most affordable options on the market, with some retailing for as much as three times the price.

What are the benefits of at home Reformer Pilates?

As you might expect, when used properly, the benefits of an at-home Reformer Pilates practice are much the same as attending a class IRL - with the added upside of harnessing these perks from the comfort of your own home.

"The main benefit of an at-home Reformer Pilates machine is convenience," agrees Warburton. "You can enjoy a full-body Pilates workout from home without needing to attend a studio. It allows you to tailor your routine and helps to support you in building strength, flexibility, and core stability. Plus, it's great for muscle toning and improving overall posture, as with any Pilates style."

However, the practice does come with some drawbacks. "The main drawback is cost—Reformer machines can be expensive, especially really good ones," agrees Pilates instructor and founder of Chloe's Pilates, Chloe Hodgson. " It’s a great idea to invest in a high-quality machine that offers smooth carriage movement and adjustable resistance settings to match your fitness level and goals. Also, they do require space, so you’ll need a dedicated area to use and store the machine. Another consideration is that without an instructor's guidance, it may be harder to self-correct form or alignment, which can lead to less effective workouts or even injury if you’re not careful."

Who are at home Reformer Pilates machines suitable for?

Full disclosure: Reformer Pilates does have some barriers to accessibility, and having an at-home machine by no means counteracts this. There's no denying it's an expensive piece of kit, and the cost is likely prohibitive for many of us, even when balanced against the cost of a weekly or fortnightly studio class.

That said, if you are in the market for an investment, the experts advise you to spend at least some time in an instructor-led Pilates studio first. "I'd tentatively say that an at-home Reformer isn't really suitable for everybody," cautions Warburton. "While home Reformers can, in theory, be used by most people, having some prior exposure to Reformer Pilates (through a group class or even a one-to-one) is strongly advisable. This ensures you understand how to use the machine safely, which is key, and how it should feel and how to perform exercises with proper form, reducing the possible risk of injury."

Subject to this caveat, if your budget (and floor space) allows, an at-home Reformer machine can be a fantastic addition to an at-home fitness regime, offering a low-impact, joint-friendly workout for Pilates aficionados. "With the right knowledge and approach, an at-home Reformer can be an amazing tool for building strength, improving flexibility, and enhancing your overall Pilates practice," notes Hodgson.

I tried the Balanced Body Metro IQ at-home Pilates Reformer machine for 3 months - my review

Month one

Having practised both mat and Reformer Pilates for a number of years now, I jumped at the chance to try a Reformer machine of my very own. As I mentioned above, I was lucky enough to be able to get hold of the super compact and lightweight Balanced Body Metro IQ Reformer.

As soon as it arrived I was itching to get it set up - but, full disclosure, I did have to enlist some help to get me started. Thankfully, it came with pretty clear instructions, but I'd say it's a two-person job, if only because it's fairly heavy.

Once set up, I found it surprisingly similar in feel to the machines I'm used to in class. The springs were satisfyingly weighty, adding a lovely resistance to my moves. Initially, I searched for a YouTube at-home Reformer workout, but (even as a seasoned Pilates-goer) without an instructor to guide me, I found the moves tricky to follow, and I wasn't really sure if I was doing them right. As it turns out, there really is no substitute for a hands-on, real-life teacher.

However, I reached out to to the experts (a serious perk of my job, which I realise isn't available to everyone) and, following a fantastic one-to-one online session with Balanced Body's Education Programme Co-ordinator, Christine Crooks, I felt way more confident as I glute bridged and stretched my way through a workout. Yep - I even felt the infamous Pilates shake.

Suitably at ease with both setting up the machine and working out on it, I vowed to use it at least once a week. The moves I was most excited to try included some foot mobility work, which Crooks assured me would improve my running and strength work. Having the machine set up underneath my TV was actually a stroke of genius, too - being able to distract myself with a favourite show while doing core work was a bonus.

Month two

I'll level with you - I didn't use the Reformer as much this month as I had the previous month, but this was mainly due to it being my children's summer holidays (I challenge anyone to set up an at home machine and have time/space to use it during August) and I was struck down with a rather nasty bout of Covid for a couple of weeks, too.

That said, as I was recovering and starting to gently move my body again, the Reformer really came into its own as I was able to use it to stretch my spine and elongate my muscles after a while of sitting and lying in bed, perfect for the week when I wasn't quite ready to attempt anything too cardio-heavy.

I also loved how handy its design was for easy, foldaway storage. The wheels made it a dream to get out and put away, too.

Month three

Back to full strength and fitness, hopping on the Reformer has become second nature to me, even if just for a quick five-minute cool-down stretch after a run, or to mobilise my spine after sitting at my desk all day.

For me, it hasn't quite replaced an in-person class, as I love the interaction of working out with other people - plus, those tiny tweaks an instructor makes to your form and technique really do make all the difference.

But it doesn't have to be an either/or, as Crooks explains. "Speaking as someone who likes an accountability partner (or community) there is huge value in recognizing how you will be most successful in your physical and mindful practice," she tells MC UK. "If you enjoy the social aspect of going to a studio, why deprive yourself of that?! And, on the other hand, if you prefer to practice on your own at home, then go for it. Either way, engaging in a consistent, mindful practice is going to be beneficial."

Will I continue to use it? Absolutely - but I would say that it's best suited for those of you who absolutely love home workouts and would choose them over in-studio classes.

I've never been one for foundation - I've yet to find one that doesn't feel like it's sitting on my skin, acting like a mask. Instead I like a lightweight base with skin-loving ingredients that nourish my dry skin. Skin tints have been my go-to now for many years - they make me look like myself, but better.

I am incredibly fortunate that these came into my possession thanks to my job - it is after all my job to test and trial all manner of complexion products, From the best tinted moisturisers to powder foundations, and everything in between. But it's the skincare make-up hybrid nature of a skin tint that I personally love. And my three favourites have set the bar high.

However, recently I have shelved the spenny bases, in favour of a product that costs £7.98 and quite frankly face (and bank balance) has never been happier. Enter: L'Oréal Paris Glotion.

L'Oréal Paris Glotion landed on my desk months ago and I didn't immediately think much of it, but added it to my ever increasing pile of products to take home and test. One day I absentmindedly swatched it onto the back of my hand whilst on a work Zoom call. I was surprised with how skin-like the finish was. I had initially thought it was going to be a bit a white, sparkly, iridescent cream - the shimmery packaging is fairly misleading I'd say - but in fact, it's more like a wash of warm, luminous colour.

So after my call finished, I applied it to my face. The results were incredibly pleasing. Much like my beloved skin tints, this gave me a hydrated, radiant glow, but thanks to the fact that I had taken the medium shade home, it also added warmth that I would typically have to get from my bronzer. Incidentally, there are four shades to choose from - Fair Glow, Light Glow, Medium Glow and Deep Glow. It's also formulated with glycerin and shea butter for hydration, which as you know I look for in a base.

And this what makes Glotion so completely brilliant - it is, for want of a better word, a skin enhancer. There's no other way to describe it.

In the days after, I was on TikTok doing some research for a story and my feed was taken up entirely by Glotion. Every single beauty creator was using it. And it's quite the multi-tasker - some people were using it as an illuminating primer before foundation, others as a highlighter or a bronzer, with the lighter and darker shades. However, I love to apply it all over.

I cannot get enough of how it makes my complexion look on a daily basis, and I'm also in a state of disbelief at the price - £11.99 normally, but currently £7.98 in the Amazon Prime Day deals. So whilst skin tints will forever hold a very special place in my heart, at least I now know that when my bank account is looking like a barren wasteland, I can still have expensive looking skin.

My hair has been through a lot. Much to my mum's dismay, I was first acquainted with hair dye around the age of 12 or 13. My hair has been every colour of the rainbow with sprinklings of Sun-In misuse in between. After a long period of sticking to brunette with some money pieces in the summer, I went bright copper in early 2019. One of my favourite colours, done by the brilliant Jack Howard.

However, with a pandemic and Jack moving to the US, I decided it was time to return to my roots—quite literally, by attempting to grow out the copper and back to my natural shade—a deep brunette. Throughout lockdown, I didn't mind my growing copper roots; after all it was only colleagues on Zoom who saw me sport them. But as we started to return to normal, I realised I needed something else to disguise the now washed-out copper as I grew my lengths—something like a hair gloss.

Enter: Glaze Super Color Conditioning Gloss.

This brilliant pigmented glossing product has worked wonders in not only coving my copper without it going any unusual tones, but it also adds the most incredible shine. Here's exactly how I use it and my results.

Glaze application

First, here's what you'll need. Your Glaze hair gloss (I went for Chocolate Gleam), gloves (I re-use the same pair hence why they're an odd colour), hair clips and a wide tooth comb. Oh, and something to protect your skin and clothes (e.g. a hair-dye T-shirt), which is particularly important if your method is slap-dash like mine.

After sectioning my hair, I start with my mid-lengths and ends as that's the sections where my copper is still growing out, so it gets a little brassy. I then do this for all of the sections of my hair before moving on to my roots. When my copper was really peeping through, I only used the gloss on my ends and lightly feathered it up towards my roots so that I wasn't always putting product on my roots where I didn't need it. However, now that it's far more grown-out, I tend to put Glaze on my roots, too, as I love the shine it gives.

From start to finish, it takes me six minutes to cover my whole hair. What I love about this is that it only takes 10 minutes to work its magic on the hair before you need to rinse it out, so it doesn't feel like a mammoth task. Plus, you can put it straight onto dry hair. I always use shampoo and conditioner as normal after applying.

The biggest downfall of this product is the packaging. Its oval-shaped bottle looks great but is nearly impossible to squeeze, so do find myself unscrewing the cap and blobbing it straight out.

Glaze formula

Glaze is a semi-permanent formula but doesn't feel like the stubborn semi-permanent dyes from back in the day that would weirdly cling to the hair. This lasts around 10 washes with its full effects. I find that it lasts longer on my mid-length and ends covering my copper growth but the shine lasts about eight washes for me. I probably get about three applications from a tub, so it works out at around a fiver for each dye.

The formula is packed full of conditioning ingredients in addition to the colourants, which is what gives hair such a noticeable shine.

It's available in 16 shades, including blondes, coppers and even clear if you just want added shine. Glaze can also be used on wigs and extensions provided the hair is human hair.

I never go for a shade too dissimilar to my natural colour so the results give my hair a balanced look, knocking out any brassy or light tones coming through from previous dye jobs as I grow it out. It gives the most incredible shine that, without a doubt, someone will compliment the few weeks after I've used Glaze. It also makes the texture of my hair much glossier and shinier, meaning I don't feel like I have to use heat on it quite as much since it naturally appears healthier.

I'd say the shine lasts the 10 washes it promises but the colour stains for longer. If you're looking for something to give your hair that natural-but-better look with a boost in shine, Glaze is your gal.

Amazon Prime Day might be over this year, but there tends to be two big Prime Day-level Amazon sale events throughout the year. While we don't know the date just yet, the next one usually falls around mid-end of October, so expect some more editors' Prime Day picks to come your way then!

Sunday Riley products often get rave reviews and reach cult status. Good Genes, the brand's iconic exfoliating serum racks up hundreds of 5-star ratings on Amazon and has a loyal following. However, there are two different versions and it's important to know the difference. There's the original Sunday Riley Good Genes All-in-One Lactic Acid Treatment, which is the brand’s US iteration of the Good Genes serum. This skin-brightening treatment has legions of fans stateside, including the likes of Oprah, Drew Barrymore and Helen Mirren no less. However, there's also the Sunday Riley Good Genes Glycolic Acid Treatment - the UK version, which was tweaked by the brand a few years back to adhere to the EU regulations around product formulation. You can only buy the glycolic version in the UK. If you see the lactic acid treatment for sale, I urge you to be careful as it may not be properly advertised.

The UK's glycolic acid serum promises all the same skin-brightening exfoliating benefits, but with an ingredients list that sticks to the EU rules. But is it any good? Ahead, I share my honest review of the cult serum and break down the differences between the UK and the US formulations.

My Honest Sunday Riley Good Genes Glycolic Acid Treatment Review

First impressions

I’ve been a big fan of Sunday Riley skincare for a few years now and I have been through a couple of bottles of the Sunday Riley Good Genes Glycolic Acid Treatment to date—so this review was a pretty easy one for me. (Spoiler: I love it.) For context, I’m 35 and my skin is spot-prone, has some pigmentation and uneven texture, and I have two young kids so I look perpetually tired.

Let’s get into the product itself—the texture of this is delightful. Sunday Riley calls it a treatment rather than a serum - that's down to the fact that you get results that are reminiscent of a mini facial. I also think it's because the texture sits somewhere between a serum and a moisturiser—it’s silky-smooth, creamy and feels surprisingly nourishing on the skin.

And while I always try hard not to let the packaging of a product dictate my impressions of the formula inside, it has to be said that Sunday Riley packaging feels so premium. From the luxurious box that the product is housed in to the heavyweight frosted glass bottle and the pump that disperses the perfect amount of treatment—it feels like a real treat to use.

The formula

Let’s get into the nitty-gritty, shall we? What makes up the Sunday Riley Good Genes Glycolic Acid Treatment and how does this differ from the Good Genes Lactic Acid Treatment that is only meant to be available in the US? The first thing to note is that EU regulations dictate that lactic acid treatments are only permitted with a maximum concentration of 10% and a pH of at least 3.5. The Lactic Acid version of Good Genes boasts a 7% concentration of lactic acid and a pH of 3. So as the pH is too low, the UK version harnesses glycolic acid as its AHA of choice at a level of 7%, with lactic acid salt at 3% (that’s potassium lactate on the ingredients list) and a pH of 3.5.

The crux of it is that both formulas work to gently buff away dead skin cells, exfoliate pores, brighten the surface of the skin, and basically leave your skin brighter than before. The good thing about the UK version, in my opinion, is that glycolic acid has a slightly smaller molecule size than lactic acid which actually means this version penetrates the skin slightly more deeply and helps to regenerate and resurface for even glowier results. The downside, however, is that people can be slightly more reactive to glycolic acid than lactic acid so those of you with sensitive skin should patch test before using this.

The results

Typically, glycolic acid isn’t my AHA of choice. As someone prone to spots, I prefer the gentler nature of lactic acid and generally find it a less irritating option for my skin. However, I have used Sunday Riley Good Genes Glycolic Acid Treatment on and off over the last few years and have never reacted to or found that it has exacerbated breakouts or irritation. In fact, I’d say that it’s actually one of the few skincare products I’ve used that can make a noticeable difference to my skin for the better within days of using it.

If I’ve recently had a bad batch of hormonal acne, my skin is feeling particularly congested or dull, or I’ve noticed an increase in pigmentation caused by spot scarring, then this is the product that I’ll use for an instant complexion pick-me-up. I personally only use it at night due to the high concentration of AHAs (and I make sure to use a facial sunscreen the following day) but I will always wake up to smoother, brighter, more even skin. Honestly, I’ve paid for facials where my skin has looked less impressive afterwards.

Although I'm a beauty editor with an endless supply of heated styling tools (there isn't a hair straightener or curling wand that I've not tried), I often struggle to get my hair exactly how I like it. My skill is lacking and my patience is practically non-existent. That's why I get excited by innovations promising an easier route to an (almost) salon-standard style: just like ghd's new Duet Blowdry.

I'll admit, I wasn't expecting much when I tried this tool thinking: "It'll probably be like all the others I have", but I was proven wrong and I've not used any of my other styling tools since.

Here's exactly what I think about the tool to help you decide whether it might just give you the hair of your dreams, too.

What is the ghd Duet Blowdry?

The ghd Duet Blowdry is from the same family as the ghd Duet Style 2-in-1 Hot Air Styler but, as the name suggests, it's built to mimic that salon blow dry with a round brush instead of hot plates.

It takes your hair from wet to dry without needing other styling tools. The technology of this Duet is seriously impressive. During a press briefing with the engineering team, they explained the smart heat technology to me, which essentially allows the tool to maintain a consistent level of heat meaning you get an even coverage of heat to style the hair and minimise heat damage.

This limited heat damage, ease of volume and snag-free, plastic-bristled round brush make this brush special. As someone with fine hair but lots of it, I'm always looking for easy volume and something that can run through my hair quickly giving a sleek yet bouncy finish.

How does the ghd Duet Blowdry differ from other blow dry brushes

I found this tool so much easier to use than all the other hot brushes. Because it's snag-free, it creates that frizz-free finish without much effort required at all.

The other aspect I loved about this round brush, which sets it apart from others is that I could dry big chunks of hair at a time, whereas normally I have to use small sections which can take forever.

One of its downsides is how heavy it is, which not everyone will be able to deal with. Plus, it's near-impossible to clean properly. It comes with a handy brush to get the hair out, which works great., however in terms of cleaning up the dust and leftover hair styling product on the brush, I'm yet to find a way to do so effectively.

ghd Duet Blowdry Processs

I've used this tool about 10 times now, so I've mastered how to use it to get the best result for my hair.

Although you can use this tool to dry your roots (unlike others, the brush head does let you get right up to the scalp), I much prefer to dry my roots (particularly at the back of my head) with my Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer. I find that this means I'll spend more time on the ends—told you I didn't have a lot of patience.

I then section my hair taking pretty large chunks and using the Duet Blow dry at the roots to get some volume. Then I start curling my hair around the barrel doing 2-3 passes on it. It takes me about 15 minutes to do my hair completely if I'm not bothering to create curls. It doesn't have a cool shot setting, so if you want to create loose waves or curls it requires some pinning. It takes me far less time to use this than it does to straighten my hair, which surprises me every time.

In the photo above, I've let my hair dry naturally far more than I should so it's not quite as curly as it has been previously (this tool definitely works best when the hair is still damp). However, it still gives that lovely smooth finish with a bit of volume and movement on the ends.

If you have thick hair, I do think this tool is going to require much more effort than a pair of straighteners will and it'll likely take quite a while. But if you like that quick, lazy blowout finish that lasts for days then I think you'll like this.

ghd Duet Blowdry Results

It gives my hair an impressive shine, some lovely volume and movement, plus it keeps it frizz-free right until my next wash (even with multiple workouts in between)—and I can't say the same for any other hair tool I own.

For me personally, I still think I get a better result in the salon (hence my saying 'almost' salon-worthy) because there's nothing quite like it. But if I put more effort in with this and pin my curls up, I can get a pretty close result.

Despite how much I love it, I'm aware that it's a really expensive tool that 'just' does one thing; particularly since it's so hard to clean too. I'd say that if you vary your hairstyle a lot (straightening, curling, blowdrying) then you might want to try a multi-styler instead. But if you're like me and typically stick to one hairstyle and just want something super quick with fantastic results then it is a brilliant tool.

How does it differ from the ghd Duet Style 2-in-1 Hot Air Styler

The difference between the ghd Duet Style 2-in-1 Hot Air Styler and Duet Blow Dry is that the former straightens (yep, you can straighten your hair from wet—game-changing) and the latter creates a blow dry effect.

Since I love volume and a bouncy blow-out look, I much prefer the Duet Blowdry but for those of you who prefer super sleek, straight hair, you might want to check out the 2-in-1 Hot Air Styler.

I have to say, I agree. I am obsessed with this body oil. Acting as a body shimmer, body moisturiser and fragrance all in one, it speeds up my getting-ready process immensely, making my skin look and smell amazing in one fell swoop. My review of the Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Dry Oil

First things first, you should know that there are a number of Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse oils to choose from—including floral and neroli-scented options. I’ve been using and loving the gold shimmery version of the original, so that’s what I’ve reviewed below, but the original version features the same fragrance and nourishing benefits without the glitter. So if you’re not a fan of the golden sheen, rest assured that you can still get hydrated and incredible-smelling skin without any shimmer. I’m a bit of a magpie, so of course the glittery oil took my fancy, and as far as body shimmers go, it is hands down the best I’ve tried.

I’ll be honest: it looks a little intense when you’ve first sprayed it on—but not to worry, the opaque gold shimmer rubs into a more wearable golden sheen. Notice I didn’t say ‘subtle’ here. When I use a shimmering body oil I want people to notice the gorgeous gold-toned finish. For me, this is the perfect tan-enhancing product to spritz onto my shoulders and décolleté on warm summer evenings—hello golden-hour holiday pics.

Fair warning: it does have glitter particles in it, so if you’re after a more subtle shimmer or sheen, this might not be for you. Personally? I want to sparkle like Edward Cullen in the sunlight, so glitter me up.

Secondly, this stuff smells utterly incredible—clean and perfume-like, it’s subtle enough to slather all over your skin without fear of overdoing it. Worn alone, this has a subtle summery scent, like warmth, sunshine and delicate florals, but the light, fresh scent also works beautifully with other fragrances. Layered with my favourite perfume (Chanel’s Chance eau Fraîche, in case you were wondering), it’s a summer skin dream. It’s one of those scents that you can’t quite put your finger on, but it’s universally adored nevertheless—I’ve never had more compliments on my scent than in the last few weeks I’ve been wearing this body oil.

So, just how wearable is this oil? Like the name suggests, it has the consistency of a dry oil – melting into the skin quickly and effectively – but is still incredibly hydrating. It feels incredibly lightweight on my skin and not at all greasy or sticky. I did need to wash my hands after applying it to my body to get rid of any excess glitter, but experienced no transfer of product from my body to my clothes whatsoever. Pretty impressive.

Like any great multi-purpose product, it can be used pretty much all over: on the body, face and hair. I found the most effective way to apply it to my hair and face was by simply using what was left of the product after applying it to my body—running it through my hair, and patting it into my skin on top of make-up. I wouldn’t necessarily spray this directly onto my hair unless I was creating a shimmery slicked-back bun look as I imagine it would look a little greasy and intense on freshly-washed lengths, despite the lightweight dry oil formula. While I haven’t tried this for myself yet, I’ve heard it’s great to mix into your foundation or face moisturiser for an extra glowy effect.

While I tend to take trending beauty products with a pinch of salt, I pride myself on testing and trialling all of them in order to work out which ones live up to the hype. And while every so often a trending tool or cult lipstick turns out to be worth the buzz, I often need a little more convincing when it comes to skincare. Now that I’m in my mid-30s, I’ve definitely noticed some changes in my skin which mean that I’m starting to seek out products that can work a little harder for me. I’ve always dealt with spots—and feel like I’ve got my routine for acne-prone skin down—but these days I’ve noticed that my skin looks less bright, feels less plump, and I’m starting to see the emergence of my first fine lines too.

So, when I noticed that there was a serum being raved about online, with hundreds of 5-star reviews on Amazon, I was intrigued. Especially when I spotted that it was a retinol serum, which is considered to be a gold standard ingredient when it comes to minimising lines and wrinkles, improving skin texture and supporting collagen and elastin production in the skin. The product in question? L'Oréal Paris Pure Retinol Revitalift Laser Night Serum.

In line with the new retinol rules that are coming into play this year which will limit over-the-counter retinol products for the face to a maximum concentration of 0.3%, the L'Oréal Paris Pure Retinol Revitalift Laser Night Serum contains an impressively potent dose of 0.2% pure retinol—the highest concentration that L'Oréal Paris has offered to date. But while the reviews are glowing and the ingredients list looks impressive, does it actually live up to the hype? Keep scrolling for my honest review.

First impressions

The first thing to note about the L'Oréal Paris Pure Retinol Revitalift Laser Night Serum is the price. At first glance, £41 might sound expensive for a high-street skincare product, but hear me out. I have tried my fair share of retinol serums over the years, with one of my favourite products (the Shani Darden Retinol Reform) costing £82 for the same amount of product and with no explicit breakdown of the concentration of pure retinol in the formula. I’ve also tried retinol serums with three-figure price tags and less potency than this one. Of course, stronger doesn’t always mean better, but it is good to know that this offers both affordability and efficacy as a starting point.

How to use it

If you are new to using retinol products then expert advice tends to be the same—start slowly, just once or twice a week, and then build up to more regular use as your skin learns to tolerate the product. I was impressed that there is a clear schedule of use on the L'Oréal Paris Pure Retinol Revitalift Laser Night Serum packaging as many brands are a bit unclear around usage guidelines with their retinol products.

The brand suggests using it for two nights during week one, every other night during week two, and nightly in week three as long as your skin is tolerating it. Plus, most importantly, they state that you should use a minimum of SPF20 the morning after as using retinol increases your skin’s sensitivity to the sun. I’m an SPF50 kind of girl, so I stuck to my usual sunscreen routine on the days following.

The texture

As for the serum itself, I have to say that I love the texture of this product. More of a milky consistency than the gel textures that I tend to gravitate towards for dealing with breakouts, it feels delightfully hydrating on the skin and helped to quench some of the dehydration that I’ve been dealing with. The addition of hyaluronic acid is key here and really helps to combat some of the dryness and irritation that can come with using a strong retinol at first.(Have a look at this guide to retinol purge if you find yourself experiencing any side effects.) I have been truly impressed with how quickly it sinks into the skin, leaving it velvety-smooth, soft and with no hint of sticky residue. The only thing I wasn’t sure about is that the serum has quite a strong, almost floral, scent. It fades quickly once the product has sunk in, but if you aren’t a fan of fragranced products or are particularly sensitive to scent then you may not like this.

The results

I mentioned earlier that I already have a retinol serum that I adore, and I’ve been lucky enough to try some incredible retinol products over the years with really impressive results, so I really wasn’t expecting to be bowled over by this serum. However, I have to admit that this is a really really good retinol serum—and when you take the price into account, I think it’s one of the best I’ve used. After a couple of weeks of regular use I definitely think my skin looks brighter, fresher and more even in tone. My face looks a whole lot healthier than it did before I started using it.

I do think that the texture and the concentration of retinol means that it is probably best suited to slightly more mature skin than mine—or those that are starting to pick up on more deep-set wrinkles and a more noticeable loss of elasticity—and I can’t really say that I’ve noticed a huge change in the fluttering of fine lines around my eyes just yet. However, I would continue using it thanks to how soft my skin feels and how much more luminous it looks when I wake up in the morning.

With so many beauty products out there these days, it's difficult to know which viral ones are actually worthy of our attention. But that's where we come in to sift through hundreds of products to find the best foundations for oily skin, the best toner for dry skin and everything in between. One product that consistently does the rounds on TikTok and continues to be one of Amazon's bestselling beauty products is Cosrx's Advanced 96 Snail Mucin Essence. So I decided to give it a trial and report my findings.

I first tried a snail mucin product about eight years ago. It was sticky and far from a pleasant experience, but the results were incredible. As someone with rosacea and extremely reactive skin, I could slather it on at night and wake up to bouncy and hydrated skin that was calm - redness visibly reduced. However, I stopped using it a few years ago because, well, beauty editor life means having about 84 products on the go at all times.

That's why when I first tried Cosrx's Advanced 96 Snail Mucin Essence, I knew my skin was in for a good time. Here's what you need to know about it.

Snail mucin explained

As you've probably already guessed from the name, the main ingredient and USP of this product is snail mucin - in other words: snail slime (the scientific name is secretion filtrate). To confirm, you shouldn't go home this evening, pop into your garden and put snails on your face - that's disgusting and unhygienic, please don't do that. However, the purpose of the snail's mucus is to protect the its skin and keep it from drying out. It has been found that it works in a similar way for humans, as it contains complex glycoproteins, which are beneficial for the skin. The mucin is rich in antioxidants, super hydrating and antimicrobial.

Cosrx extracts the mucus it uses in its products from giant African land snails, which are farmed so that their health can be controlled. The brand explains that the "snails are placed over a mesh net in a dark and quiet room. As nocturnal creatures, this provides them with a comfortable space to roam freely. After about an hour, the snails are transferred back to their homes while the mucin is collected and processed for use." The brand is clear in its messaging that no snails are harmed in the harvesting but it's obviously up to your judgement whether or not to introduce the ingredient into your routine. You'll want to steer clear if you like your beauty products vegan.

The texture of the essence is unique as it's fairly sticky. This might put a few people off trying it, but in my opinion lots of the high-street hyaluronic acids are stickier. The essence is designed to be followed by a moisturiser so the sticky feeling should go away fairly quickly. I also find that if I'm wearing make-up over the top then it works quite well as a primer.

To apply it, I dropped about a 5p-sized amount onto my palms and then gently massaged it into my skin before my moisturiser and SPF in the morning. Thanks to its calming ingredients, it's a product that's super easy to incorporate into an existing skincare routine and can be used alongside other actives like retinoids.

Even after just a few days of use, my skin felt and looked so much calmer and hydrated. I find that it lessens my redness and reduces dryness dramatically when I use it. It's a product that'll remain in my rotation.

I'm not the only one who loves it, I chatted with Marie Claire staffer, Dami Abajingin, about her love of CosRx and this is what she had to say: "I initially purchased it to repair my skin barrier after an adverse reaction to a tretinoin product over a year ago. Not only did it repair my skin barrier, but it has significantly improved my skin texture overall. I have combination skin and have previously struggled with dehydration (on my forehead in particular) now my skin is softer, smoother and plumper."

My only gripe is that I wish they did smaller bottles. The 100ml expires in 12 months and although you might think that's a long time to use it all up, a little goes a very long way with this essence. You only need the smallest amount for the face, neck and chest. I think if they did smaller, cheaper bottles you might get more use from it.

Despite being a beauty editor, I make no secret of the fact that I am utterly useless when it comes to styling my own hair. I have wasted countless hours armed with the best hair dryers trying to nail an at-home blow dry with the finished result always being totally underwhelming. As someone with hair that has a natural curl and is prone to frizz, I find that my hair often looks slightly dull with an abundance of flyaways at the roots. Of course, I’m well aware that much of this is probably down to my total lack of styling skills rather than the tools themselves. After all, when I’m at a salon, hairstylists seem to have no problem blow drying my hair into a sleek, shiny, bouncy style using a hair dryer alone. But, for me, I tend to find that haphazardly drying my hair and then styling it with tools like my beloved curling wand or some hair straighteners is the only way that I can get close to the look I want.

Suffice to say, this is why I’ve never had much interest at all in the blow-dry brushes and Dyson Airwrap multi-stylers that everyone raves about. To me, they often look like a bit of a faff to use and I’ve never been convinced that I’d be able to achieve the kind of impressive-looking blowouts that some people do using them.

However, there’s one tool that I couldn’t help noticing every time I scrolled through TikTok with users claiming it to be the key to getting a salon-standard blowout at home—even if you’re rubbish at doing your own hair. Enter: Revlon One-Step Hairdryer and Volumiser.

Promising to dry hair quickly, smooth lengths and add volume at the roots, the 2-in-1 tool has hundreds of 5-star reviews on Amazon from people raving about this product. And while the price varies depending on where you buy it, the fact that you can pick one up for just over £30 also appealed to me. So, is it worth the hype? Keep scrolling for my honest review. (Spoiler: I’m seriously impressed.)

My honest Revlon Pro Collection Salon One-Step Hairdryer and Volumiser Review

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

As someone who is instantly put off when a hair tool has lots of attachments or an enormous instruction manual, I was pleasantly surprised that the Revlon One-Step Hairdyrer and Volumiser is an entirely self-contained tool. The only thing you get in the box is the device itself and a tiny leaflet providing a simple guide to the very few buttons. There are no changeable heads so all you need to do is plug it in and off you go. There are two heat settings to choose from—high for thicker hair or low for finer hair—and a cool setting to help set your finished style. Simple.

GETTING STARTED

Despite being called a hairdryer, surprisingly you can’t use the Revlon One-Step Hairdryer and Volumiser on soaking wet hair. The instructions state that you should towel-dry your hair first to remove excess water and detangle it with a comb or brush before getting started. I brushed mine through once I got out of the shower as usual, and then left it to air dry while I got ready. Once my hair felt slightly damp but about 80% dry I applied a heat protectant (I used the Olaplex Volumising Blow Dry Mist) and then got ready to start styling.

USING THE REVLON ONE-STEP HAIRDRYER AND VOLUMISER

As mentioned, because I am so rubbish at doing my own hair, I watched TikTok videos of people using this tool to get some tips. Generally, people recommend leaving your hair until it’s almost dry and then sectioning it off. I separated the top section of my hair and pinned up my fringe. I also noticed that a lot of people suggested blow-drying each section of hair using a twisting motion—starting near the roots of your hair with the brush and then twisting it downwards as the hair fans itself out around the brush. I’ll admit I was a bit nervous about this at first as I imagined my hair would get tangled in the bristles and end up getting blasted with heat for way longer than is healthy. But, I have to say, it worked amazingly well.

I used the low heat setting—I found that the higher setting felt way too hot and I was concerned it would burn my hair—and was able to work my way around all sections of my hair in about 10 minutes. The tool itself was fairly lightweight and comfortable to use, although the brush is big. I had my hair cut recently so it currently sits just past my shoulders, so if you have a bob or a shorter style I think the barrel will be too big for styling your hair with. Thankfully, I discovered that the brand has another version for mid to short length hair. The other frustration point (which might be entirely down to how I was holding it rather than the tool itself) is that I kept accidentally knocking the heat setting up to the higher temperature while it was in use. It would be good to be able to select the heat with a button rather than the twisting motion which can be easily adjusted.

THE RESULTS

The first thing I have to mention is how good my hair felt after using this tool. As I mentioned before, when blow-drying my hair with a hairdryer, it usually feels dry and a bit frazzled afterwards, but my hair felt incredibly smooth, soft and silky. For that alone I would happily recommend this product. Not only that, though, but I was seriously impressed with how my finished style looked too. Bouncy, full of volume, and impressively smooth. Sure, I still have some flyaways, but I’m not a professional stylist and my hair tends to have a life of its own.

I would never be able to achieve anything close to this finish using a standard hair dryer, without reaching for curling tongs or straighteners—and even then I don’t think I’d be able to achieve this level of volume. In fact, I was so blown away by the results that I immediately messaged photos to basically all of my friends and family raving about it. Even if it cost three times the price, I’d recommend it.

"I'm quite fussy when it comes to hair tools - I've tested far too many in my time that are impossible to use or promise (but fail to deliver) the absolute world - but I've been quietly surprised by the Revlon 5-in-1 Styler. It was super easy to set up - you can use it as soon as you've taken it out of the box and plugged it in - plus, I was impressed with both the power of the tool plus volume level (other alternatives I've tested in the past have been quite noisy).

"It comes with five different heads and four different heat settings, all of which are super simple to switch between and make it easy to achieve the hairstyle you want. The large round brush is great for a bouncy blowout, for example, while the curler attachment is your best bet for tighter waves and curls. Rather just dry your hair than curl it? This is a total mainstay in my routine as a second or morning cleanse. It has a thin almost jelly consistency that feels beautiful on the skin and does a great job at washing the face of any leftover grime from the day, or sweat from the night, and never leaves the skin feeling tight or stripped. Because of its texture, I'd recommend using this after a thicker oil or balm-based cleanser at night if you're wearing make-up to ensure you've removed it all. The Hydrating Cleanser is a fantastic formula for dry or sensitive skin, but in all honesty, it does such a good job that I'd recommend it to practically everyone.

2. CeraVe Facial Moisturising Lotion SPF50

This is an SPF moisturiser that I consistently return to and every time I do, I wonder why it stopped in the first place. I love how it feels on the skin - super hydrating yet lightweight. It does leave a slightly tacky finish to begin with, but this settles down very quickly. In fact, it's actually perfect under make-up because it sits well under foundation and makes it last. It's fragrance-free and contains skin barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides, so anyone can use it.

Since it's a facial moisturiser with SPF, you need to use enough to ensure you're getting the right amount of protection. Although sunscreens and moisturisers containing sunscreen are tested the same (i.e. they both meet necessary standards), people tend to use less moisturiser than they might a specific sunscreen. Aim to use two to three finger lengths of the formula to get a sun protection factor of 50.

3. CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream

In my opinion, this is an underrated product from the brand. The SA Smoothing Cream is a brilliant formula to help get rid of rough skin, and in particular for treating minor keratosis pilaris (and preventing it from returning). The formula contains salicylic acid (fantastic for exfoliation), three ceramides (hardworking skin barrier repairers) and 10% urea (brilliant for both moisturising and exfoliating). It has a thick ointment texture that dries almost instantly making it easy to slot into your routine, even if you're in a rush or don't love the feeling of moisturiser on your skin. It also feels surprisingly soothing for an ointment, never feeling suffocating as some can.

4. CeraVe Advanced Repair Ointment

The Advanced Repair Ointment is something that I think everyone should have in their cabinet. It's brilliant for the body, lips and face—basically anywhere that needs extra TLC. It's a petroleum-based ointment, which also contains hyaluronic acid and ceramides to help moisturise and repair severely dry skin. I disagree that this isn't a greasy formula (it's petroleum-based so by nature it's going to lean that way) but to be that isn't a bad thing; it's fantastic to use on cracked skin and sore areas, as well as being pretty useful for skincare slugging at night.

5. CeraVe Moisturising Cream

A basic (in the best kind of way) but brilliant moisturiser deserves a place in your routine. This huge tub (seriously, it lasts a long, long time) gets the job done and although isn't the fanciest or prettiest, it does a far superior job than many more expensive options in my rotation. The formula is packed full of hydrating ingredients to deeply hydrate the skin and protect its barrier. I layer this on at the first sign of dryness. You can use this on your face and on your body.

6. CeraVe Skin Renewing Vitamin C Serum

A new one for me because it's a new one from the brand. I'm pretty apprehensive about vitamin C as my skin is on the sensitive side, but so far my skin has enjoyed it. It has a really thin consistency, which I like as it means it's easy to spread across the whole face without layering too much on. When starting a new vitamin C, I use a small amount and build it up slowly to avoid irritation. This clever tube contains the purest form of vitamin C, L-ascorbic acid in combination with hyaluronic acid and ceramides to hydrate as the active gets to work. Using this in the morning before your facial sunscreen helps to prevent free radical damage caused by UV rays.

7. CeraVe Reparative Hand Cream

I'm pretty passionate about hand creams and finding the perfect one can be a challenge. I like them to be thick and deeply moisturising, but I also like to be able to use my phone or hold my book in bed right after applying, so it has to dry fast. What is Amazon Prime Day?

Simply put: Amazon Prime Day is Amazon’s biggest sale of the year. While not everything on the online marketplace is slashed in price, it’s fair to say that most will be. And yes, that includes some of the Marie Claire UK team’s favourite tried and tested products. Amazon Prime Day is a great opportunity to pick up the products you love—or have your eye on—for less.

My job means that I try a lot of beauty products for work, so oftentimes my bathroom cupboard feels like it has a revolving door of things coming in and out as I test, trial and then move on to something new. If I love it, it will usually be finished up pretty swiftly before switching out for an alternative formulation, and if I don’t get on with it then it will be passed onto someone it would suit more. However, there is one brand that remains ever-present in my changing stash of skincare essentials and that’s Elemis.

I first got hooked over ten years ago, before I worked in the beauty industry, when my mum purchased me a gift set of the sadly discontinued Pro-Radiance Cream Cleanser and the cult Pro-Collagen Marine Cream, which I consider to be the best moisturiser for mature skin. I have no idea what drew her to the brand in the first place or convinced her that it was a good choice for my oily, spot-prone, 24-year-old skin, but luckily my skin absolutely loved these products. Despite the advanced formulations being targeted toward more mature skin, I was instantly amazed at how bright and healthy my skin looked. And unlike a lot of other products I’d tried previously, it didn’t exacerbate my acne in the slightest. In fact, I credit the brand with really accelerating my interest in skin health. It was the first time in my life that I remember actually enjoying using skincare, rather than it feeling like something I was applying in the hope of getting rid of my spots.

Ever since, I would ask for Elemis skincare for birthdays and Christmas presents, and once I started working as a beauty editor I remember the excitement I felt at being sent my first PR package from the brand. Unique in its ability to transcend the beauty bubble that my industry pals often find ourselves in, Elemis is one of those brands that appeals to both my fellow beauty editors and my friends and family—and that’s because the products deliver. These days, I have a whole host of Elemis products that I repurchase regularly myself and truly can’t imagine my skincare routine without these in them.

1. Elemis Dynamic Resurfacing Wash

I have already written something of a love letter to this face wash as I’m truly that passionate about how good it is. If you have combination, oily or dull and congested skin, then this gel cleanser will undoubtedly impress. It contains a patented tri-enzyme technology that gets to work breaking down all of the dead cells on the surface of your skin that contribute to congestion, blocked pores and loss of radiance. Once rinsed away, your skin is left feeling impossibly smooth and things like enlarged pores (which mine definitely are) look more refined and less noticeable.

2. Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream

I have pretty much always had a pot of this iconic moisturiser in my bathroom since I was first introduced to it all those years ago, because despite it saying ‘Anti-wrinkle day cream’ on the packaging I think this is a universally appealing product. One of my best friends used to work as a beauty therapist and she still touts the benefits of the star ingredient—a superhero algae Padina Pavonica—as the key to this moisturiser’s success as it’s able to mimic the skin’s own function of collagen production meaning that skin remains plump, firm and buoyant. Along with other potent marine and plant actives like chlorella and ginkgo biloba, skin always looks so vibrant and feels hydrated when using this. And the lightweight gel-cream texture means that even oily or congested skin never feels weighed down.

3. Elemis Dynamic Resurfacing Facial Pads

If you’re prone to breakouts like me then likely you will have tried your fair share of exfoliating products. However, after using some incredibly harsh products in my younger years and then over exfoliating with acids in my older years, I am always on the fence with resurfacing products now as I find that they can compromise my skin barrier and actually exacerbate breakouts. However, these resurfacing pads from Elemis perfectly balance the need to remove skin-dulling dead skin cells while keeping the skin’s hydration levels in check. Using the same tri-enzyme technology as in my favourite cleanser along with lactic acid (a gentle AHA) and a probiotic ferment complex, they gently exfoliate, speed up the skin’s natural cell turnover, smooth skin texture and minimise pigmentation. They’re so effective that you’ll look like you’ve had a mini facial after using one, and while skin is always left bright it never feels stripped or dry.

4. Elemis Frangipani Monoi Body Oil

It’s not just skincare that Elemis offers either, its body care offering is equally impressive and I think its range of shower products and body moisturisers is amongst the best. (And perfect for gifting.) I had tried and enjoyed this body oil previously, but it really came into its own for me during my pregnancies. Frankly, I felt like a sack of potatoes both times I was pregnant, but slathering myself in this luxurious body oil helped to fake some of that pregnancy glow that I’d always heard about but definitely wasn’t experiencing myself. A blend of frangipani, monoi and coconut oils, it’s intensely hydrating, but the best thing about it is the incredible scent—like the fanciest tropical holiday that you can imagine.

5. Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm

Probably the most famous product in the Elemis line-up, I don’t think I’ve ever come across a person who has tried the Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm and didn’t love it. From fellow beauty editors and my best pals, to my mum and mother-in-law respectively, basically everyone I know loves this stuff—as do I. While there are sometimes limited edition scents (neroli was a particular highlight for me) and there are also fragrance-free and rose versions available, it’s the original balm that will always have my heart. The scent is truly incredible—a blend of nine essential oils, including chamomile and eucalyptus, so that it smells exactly like walking into a spa for the most expensive and relaxing facial that you’ll ever have. And not only is it an absolute joy to massage into skin, but it is really efficacious too—making light work of dissolving the heaviest make-up and removing all traces of dirt and grime from your skin. While it starts out as an oily balm, it transforms into a nourishing milk on contact with water meaning that skin is left soft and hydrated even once it's been rinsed away.
