Following the wider jelly shoe trend that took over the feet of the coolest dressers last summer—their origins traceable back through the 80s, 90s and early 00s—the jelly heel is a more refined, sophisticated take on the classic plastic pump or flip flop. They say you never forget your first marathon, and I'll certainly never forget mine - the London Marathon 2018. It was 28 degrees, despite us having trained in snow, sleet, and hail; the crowds came out in their thousands; and I completed a distance that 24 hours prior, I wasn't entirely convinced I'd be able to finish.

For a first timer, I got so many things right that day: I'd prepared my body for the distance by ticking off nearly every training run, I'd tested my kit again, and again, and again in training to ensure nothing chafed or caused discomfort, and I had an unforgettably good playlist. As a woman who grew up in the Special K diet generation, constantly being told to shrink ourselves and eat less, I'd convinced myself that I didn't "need" as many gels as sports dietitians recommended and that I'd be A-okay just powering through.

And sure, I made it to the end in one piece, but two carb gels for a 4-hour marathon did teach me a very simple life lesson: if you're doing endurance sport, where you're depleting your body's energy stores, you need to be returning that energy in real time. Or you'll end up like me at mile 20 of my first one: tackling the dreaded wall with all my might and clinging on for dear life.

As more and more people globally get into running, I've made it my mission to spread the fuelling message and importance of giving your body what it needs far and wide. Which is why, below, I've deep dived into my all-time favourite fuelling brands and gels, with helpful insights from Dr Jamie Pugh, Scientific Advisor at Puresport and Co-founder of ExoAnalytics.

What is a running gel?

Let's start at the beginning, for those of you who've heard the term bandied around but aren't familiar with what a gel actually is. According to Dr Pugh, "Carbohydrate gels are a concentrated source of simple, easy-to-digest sugars (like glucose, maltodextrin, or fructose) made up into sachets in a gel-like texture."

If you're running, cycling, or doing endurance sports for 45 minutes or more, their purpose is simple: to supply fast-acting carbs that, once consumed, are rapidly absorbed and converted into usable energy.

"Many gels have as much carbohydrate as an entire bottle of sports drink - helping you to fuel without needing to carry lots of extra weight or drink too much fluid," he goes on.

Why do we need gels?

As I touched on in my intro, because when we workout for long periods of time (think 45 minutes or more), our body starts to rely on carbohydrate (glycogen) stores to fuel our mileage. "However, stored carbohydrate is limited and can begin to run low within 60-120 minutes of sustained effort," Dr Pugh explains. "As this happens, blood glucose levels can fall, muscles have less readily available fuel, and exercise starts to feel harder - often described by runners as ‘hitting the wall’."

That's where gels come in - a simple and convenient way to boost your carbohydrate stores and energy levels, providing an immediate energy source for your muscles.

Are gels science-backed?

In a nutshell - yes, and extensively. One landmark review by sports nutrition researcher Asker Jeukendrup concluded that carbohydrate intake during endurance exercise both improves performance and delays fatigue, especially in events lasting longer than an hour, and there's been plenty of research proving the same sentiment since.

"Research has shown again and again that taking on carbohydrates during exercise helps us maintain pace, makes it feel easier to run at the same pace, delays fatigue, and improves performance," Dr Pugh concludes.

Are gels essential?

According to Dr Pugh, they’re not strictly “necessary” for short efforts, but become increasingly important as duration and intensity rise. "Some of the first research ever looking at carbohydrate and long-distance running took place over 100 years ago at the Boston Marathon, where it was shown that consuming sources of simple sugars during the race helped runners maintain their blood glucose levels," he goes on.

If you'd rather opt for more natural sources of energy, like bagels or bananas, make sure you try it in training - each fuel type has it limitations. "Whole-food options like bananas or energy bars contain fibre and solid food parts that are slower to digest, especially during exercise," Dr Pugh. "Sports drinks, on the other hand, require larger volumes of fluid to deliver the same amount of carbohydrate. These factors can make these options more likely to cause digestive issues like bloating and stomach fullness."

Gels, on the other hand, aim to avoid these issues by "delivering a high amount of carbohydrate in a small, concentrated format that’s easier to tolerate." Speaking from personal experience, they're also super practical - easy to carry, lightweight, and simple to open when you're mid run.

As a general rule of thumb, aim for 30–60g carbs an hour.

How many should I take and when?

There is a lot of advice on how many gels to take. Some of the world’s fastest athletes will take anywhere up to 4 or 5 gels an hour (over 100g of carbohydrate every 60 minutes). However, for most people, this amount is unnecessary and can increase the risk of digestive issues rather than improve performance. For the majority of people, 60-90 g per hour provides all of the performance benefits. If you are new to taking gels, 60g per hour, one gel every 30 minutes, is a simple, easy-to-follow strategy that has been shown to be very well tolerated.

The key is to start early and be consistent, rather than waiting until you feel fatigued.

Buying a new luxury watch might not be as simple as you think, especially if you have a sought-after model in mind, such as a specific Rolex or Patek Philippe. Deciding on the best women's watches to choose from is hard enough as there are so many exquisite styles to choose from, but walk into a store to do so, and you might well be faced with a scant offering in the cases, and the reality of long – highly competitive – waiting lists.

To put things in perspective, a watch dealer described to me the sales job he loved as morphing into that of a bad-tempered receptionist: “I just pick up the phone and say no all day long.”

Even watches without eye-watering price tags can be difficult to secure, as the furore surrounding the recent Audemars Piguet x Swatch collaboration demonstrated. Riots outside Swatch stores around the world on launch day, including in London and Birmingham, forced the brand to close its shops.

While you navigate the lengthy waiting lists and search for an easier way to acquire the investment watch you desire, may we suggest going vintage? Not only does this give you access to leading luxury brands and collectible models, but there is also a good chance you'll find a great deal. Here's what you need to know.

Where to buy a pre-owned watch?

The first step is deciding where to buy, and with the market for pre-owned watches booming, there is lots of choice. For those of us who love the in-store experience, most traditional jewellers and watch stores now offer vintage watches alongside new timepieces. This can be a great way to buy from a local store that you trust, and many will offer guarantees or service plans. For example, Pragnell, which has stores in London and Stratford-upon-Avon, offers a two-year guarantee on all its pre-owned watches for peace of mind. “Our team has extensive horological knowledge, and we thoroughly assess each timepiece for authenticity, service, cleaning, and polishing to ensure the highest quality,” notes managing director Charlie Pragnell.

Another option, and one that is great for quick access to a wide variety of watches or for finding specific hard-to-come-by models, is to buy online at a dedicated digital marketplace such as Watchfinder or Chrono24. These sites allow you to sell and buy watches, and have huge databases of listings – Chrono24 claims it is used by 9 million watch lovers every month. eBay is also heavily invested in watches now, with its listings of jewellery and watches increasing 20% in the first quarter of this year, and many of those for serious models from Omega, Cartier, Rolex and Patek Philippe. With eBay, you can also treat it like a piggy bank, selling enough of your old items and keeping the cash banked as you save up for a luxury watch. Or you can use it to sell one watch to help you trade up to a new one.

Should you enjoy the thrill of the bid, auctions are another fantastic source for watches. Auction houses are a mixed bag, however, and you should pick your vendor carefully if you are not a watch expert. A lower-tier auctioneer specialising in house clearances might turn up a bargain, but you could similarly end up with a dud. “Finding someone trustworthy and with a decent reputation is paramount,” advises Tom Heap, senior watch specialist at Christie’s. “Buy the seller, as they say.” Going along to auction sale previews when you can is not just important to assess the quality of what you might bid on, it is also fun and a less pressured shopping environment than traditional retail. “There is no hard sell,” explains Charles Tearle, head of watches at auctioneer Lyon & Turnbull. “If you walk into a retailer, a lot of people feel obliged to take out a credit card and buy something. You cannot do that with an auction [preview]. You can try on as much as you want, and then if you like it you have the opportunity to bid – if it goes too high, that's okay; if you buy it for what you want, great.” Tearle advises that if you are keen on a watch at a preview, ask the auctioneer what they think it will go for on the day, and always request a condition report – that way, you will know for sure whether the watch is in working order or not.

Which vintage watches are the best investment?

The golden rule of vintage watch buying is to first and foremost buy what you love. As Tom Heap at Christie’s says: “It is important to remember, it is an avenue of pleasure”. That being said, if you are buying with an eye on future resale or long-term value, there are some relatively safe bets. At Christie’s, Heap says that collectors often bid for classic Rolex Datejusts or Cartier Tank Louis models as they “do tend to have an established market if you ever decide to sell or trade up”.

At Watchfinder, it is similarly the big brands that are considered safe havens. “If I had to single out one ‘safe’ buy, it would be the Rolex Lady-Datejust,” says UK country manager Ben Staniforth. “Rolex continues to dominate the secondary market in terms of both resale stability and liquidity, and the Datejust has enjoyed decades of uninterrupted desirability. It is classic, versatile, relatively straightforward to service, and consistently easy to resell – all qualities that matter when considering long-term value retention.”

What are the most popular vintage watches right now?

Prices on the secondary market are dictated by demand, so popular watches command higher prices. In its Watchlist Trend Report, eBay lists six of the top-growing watch models in 2026, based on a combination of sales price and category listing growth. The Patek Philippe Nautilus is up 154% on its ranking system, and all the other watches to make the list are by Cartier, with the Demoiselle up 80%, the Tank Américane up 43%, the Tank Française up 39%, the Baignore up 21%, and the Ballon Bleu up 23%. It would seem that the French maison is having a moment on the secondary watch market.

“We have seen an explosion in interest in vintage Cartier,” agrees Tom Heap at Christie’s. “They are so collectible as they’re very varied but always quite familiar and easier to approach for budding vintage collectors.” He also describes a resurgence in what he terms “neo vintage” watches, which date from the 1980s to mid 2000s, driven by younger collectors.

The ‘boyfriend watch’ trend of the 2000s is also back, according to Ben Staniforth at Watchfinder: “We’re seeing more clients gravitate towards pieces like the Rolex Datejust 31 or 36, Oyster Perpetuals, and even Royal Oaks and Nautilus models that traditionally may have been marketed more towards men.” Conversely, he says, there is also a trend for dainty styles – smaller case sizes and vintage styling such as hardstone dials and textured metals.

Watch brands discontinuing models can also cause a surge in popularity. Kirsty Keoghan, eBay’s GM of fashion and luxury in the EU, says that when Rolex called time on its GMT-Master II ‘Pepsi’ and its white gold Submariner ‘Cookie Monster’ (the unofficial nicknames relate to bezel colours) during Swiss watch show Watches and Wonders in April, she instantly saw a spike in searches for them. “Straight away, you suddenly see that [impact in] the secondary market because people are concerned that they're not going to have that watch as part of their collection because it won't be produced anymore,” she says.

How will I know if the watch is authentic?

Buying on the secondary market comes with its risks, which makes choosing a store, marketplace or auction house you trust all the more important – as well as some sort of official authentication guarantee.

“With superfakes on the rise, expert authentication is more important than ever,” says Thomas Mummery, Watchfinder’s head of authentication. “At Watchfinder, each watch undergoes a rigorous 60-step inspection and authentication process by trained and accredited watchmakers, with tens of thousands of watches passing through our experts’ hands each year. Every watch also comes with a 24-month warranty for added reassurance.”

eBay has launched its own watch authentication service in partnership with independent London-based watch repair business Stoll & Co. Watches prices at £1,500 or more are automatically enrolled for this service, at no cost to the buyer or seller. A blue tick on the listing shows that it will go through this process.

Watchmakers check the timepieces against the listing to make sure they are as described, and also check to make sure they are authentic. If the watches pass the test, they are sent on to the buyer along with an NFC chip and QR code that guarantees it passed inspection. Since the launch of this service in 2020, eBay has verified 15 million items across all categories.

If there's one person to persuade the masses that secondhand sportswear is cool, it's Harry Styles. The musician's longtime collaborator, Harry Lambert, styled him in a notable amount of vintage workout gear sourced from eBay for his recent Runner's World cover shoot, and it has me more convinced than ever that preloved is the way to go if you want to be the best-dressed (and most eco-conscious) person at the gym.

Any excuse to shout about shopping secondhand and sustainable living, I welcome with open arms. I'd say my screen time is 90% Vinted. The Business of Fashion recently reported that UK consumers spent as much as £4.8 billion on secondhand items online in 2025, so I'm not the only one.

But while scouring resale platforms has become commonplace for many of us, particularly when it comes to designer and high-ticket purchases, the athleisure world has yet to completely catch up. Understandably, some people don't love the idea of wearing race day kit someone else has sweated in. But I'm here to tell you that a hot wash and a good detergent can make anything good as new.

Lambert's choice to source secondhand led to some truly distinctive and dopamine-inducing looks, but it also proved that you don't need to turn to fast fashion brands for your workout. Good exercise clothes are made to last - and I often find that vintage pieces look much cooler too.

Compression leggings

"Compression leggings/sleeves should be worn immediately after the exercise that caused the muscle soreness and the benefits become greater between 12 – 48 hours post exercise. Whilst it’s unknown how long compression wear should be worn, it appears at least 60 minutes is required with an average pressure of 10-20 mmHg (you’ll find this on some product labels), (Marqués-Jiménez et al., 2016). I recommend Skins Compressive Tights, Series 5. Although not medical grade, this offers SKINS’ highest compression tight. Foam rollers

"Foam rolling, the long standing tool to aid athletes, offers high levels of research (Meta Analyses and reviews) to support its effectiveness. It’s been shown to have moderate increases in range of motion and reductions in muscle soreness. Certainly a good tool to have available for both warm-up and recovery. (Esma Dana et al., 2025). Foam rollers are freely available and there are no real standouts. Personally I like hollow foam rollers because they are slightly more rigid and firmer than traditional products." - Arj Thiruchelvam

Massage guns

"Percussion guns, often referred to as massage guns, do have some evidence behind them although there are still mixed results as a whole. The main improvements are small but appear to improve range of movement, flexibility and reduce pain, stiffness and muscle soreness. It’s well worth considering and may just have a psychological benefit that will aid your next run during a busy marathon period. (Buoite Stella et al., 2024). Theragun / Theragun Pro is considered one of the two industry leaders with a range of variety in their product line, but it is classified as a percussive device rather than just massage grade. This has a greater tissue reach than some of its competitors." - Arj Thiruchelvam

TENS machine

"The final gadget in my recovery toolbox is the use of a TENS machine. The evidence shows that pain and fatigue can be reduced, as well as some improvements in muscular strength. It’s most widely viewed within short term recovery rather than making long-term changes. Powerdot 2.0 has been the smart TENS device I’ve used both personally and with some of my athletes. The main reason is convenience, it takes the thinking and planning out of its use and therefore you’re more likely to use it regularly." - Arj Thiruchelvam

Epsom salts

Epsom salts are my most recommended recovery tool for several reasons, but mainly because of how well they work. I am always achey the day after a Pilates or spin class, often struggling to walk down stairs or sit in my office chair without pain. But when I have an Epsom salt bath after my workout, I wake up the next day feeling brand new—zero DOMS. I'm a bath lover anyway, so the chance to unwind and do good for my body is always welcome. But considering how cheap bath salts are, and the results they provide, it's a no-brainer investment. This formula in particular is supercharged with magnesium for extra muscle soothing benefits.

Compression boots

Why is it important to wear trail running shoes?

"Trails can consist of a wide range of surfaces that are often uneven and can include tree roots or loose impediments. Therefore, trail running shoes are designed with greater grip and deeper lugs, whereas standard running shoes prioritise cushioning and weight saving," explains Conroy.

"It is important that the shoes have tougher soles and a protective toe cap to protect from debris on the ground. Due to this, they are typically heavier than traditional running shoes.

"While it is recommended that the athlete completes a gait analysis before choosing any running shoes, this is even more critical for trail shoes as trails often include steep inclines or declines where ill-fitting shoes are more likely to result in foot abrasions or blisters," Conroy says.

What should someone look out for when shopping? 

"A solid sole, good grip and traction, firmer heel counter and a comfortable toe box are probably the most important factors to consider," says Conroy. "However, when selecting trail shoes, it is worth considering the kind of trails that will be encountered and whether a waterproof / Gore-Tex shoe would be beneficial."

Best for autumn/winter

"Through autumn and winter, when the trails are wet, muddy and unpredictable, I rely on the Hoka Mafate 5. They give me the stability and grip I need to stay confident on technical terrain." - Charlotte Fisher, ultra-runner

Best everyday

I don't own a huge amount of practical footwear, so my pair of Salomons comes with me everywhere when I need something reliable and weather-appropriate. Most recently, I wore them to battle against the snow in Iceland, and they worked a treat on icy paths and while walking through the national park. They fit perfectly true to size, and I love that they're fastened with a pull cord for easy wear and removal. Although not designed with technical features for hardcore trail runners, they're a brilliant option for more casual trail hikers.

The current model has been updated from a trail running shoe to be more city-appropriate, but that doesn't mean they don't still perform brilliantly on rocky terrain. I've worn these for hikes and jogs on bumpy surfaces, and they have held up perfectly, absorbing shock and providing enough cushioning underfoot. Best of all, they're waterproof—meaning mud, rain, and snow are no match. They're also sleek enough to wear casually, making them the ideal everyday trail shoe to have on hand when you need them.

Best lightweight

There's no shortage of beautiful sights to take in while lounging on the beach at D Maris Bay in south-western Türkiye. Floating islands, crystal-clear waters and rolling mountains as far as the eye can see. And yet my eyes keep drifting downwards—because the 2026 summer sandal season has officially begun, and it seems every single one of the glamorous guests here has had a head start. It's 2008. Karl Lagerfeld is still "The Kaiser". The Olsen twins are sitting front row at Chanel. And bug-eyed sunglasses are very much on the menu. After speaking to some of the industry's leading denim experts, I've rounded up the top five denim trends to have on your radar for the months ahead. Whether you're looking to invest or are simply on the lookout for some new season inspiration using pieces you might already have in your wardrobe.

Soft Shades

If you want to know what the latest style of jeans to buy are, then Agolde is a good place to start. The brand's classic stonewash shades have been replaced for summer with soft pastels and warm khaki tones.

"We're seeing a shift into maximalist styling, with coloured denim, particularly in soft yellow tones, bringing a more expressive, elevated feel to everyday dressing," says Creative Director at Agolde, Karen Phelps.

The key to styling colourful hues is to keep the rest of the look neutral. Contrasting shades such as burgundy, white and black lend saccharine tones a cooler edge. In the sun, crisp white shirts and silk camisoles add a more grown-up finish.

Nostalgic denim

They say trends have a 20 year rotation which means the return of nostalgic styles such as skinny jeans, bootcut legs and low-slung flares we loved in the noughties are right on time.

“A SS26 trend I’ve noticed is elevated classic silhouettes such as bootcut and flare jeans with modern details. We love blending this sense of nostalgia with a fresh perspective," says Creative Director and Co-Founder of Paige, Paige Adams-Geller.

Similarly to the pastel shades were seeing come through for summer, nostalgic silhouettes make quite a statement on their own and require minimal styling. Balance flared jeans with a cropped jacket or tucked-in blouse, style skinny jeans with a camisole and oversized blazer. And as usual, my expert advice is to pair them with a pointed-toe, whatever the feel, to elongate the leg and keep the silhouette sharp.

Double Denim

Whilst not entirely new for Spring/Summer 2026, double denim—or the “Canadian tuxedo,” as it’s known—continues to gain traction for yet another season. Darker washes look particularly polished when styled with brown suede or crisp white footwear, while classic stonewash is perfect for a Western-inspired shirt-and-jeans combination.

"There’s something effortlessly polished about a coordinated look, and we wanted to offer a contemporary take on head-to-toe dressing in our Spring ‘26 collection. My favourite double denim moment is the Fiana Top and Stevie Bootcut Jean in Tonal Ecru," says Adams-Geller.

Printed denim

Keeping in line with nostalgic denim and Noughties silhouettes, this season also sees the return of printed denim. Commonly seen in the early 2010s by brands like Paige and True Religion, printed jeans arrived in a range of bright, bold, expressive iterations. From snake prints to paisley and florals, these were once unavoidable.

Now, as we start incorporating bolder silhouettes and colours, it feels only natural to embrace pattern as well. True to its roots, but modernised, as noted by Adams-Geller, patterned denim now comes in softer hues and modern cuts.

Using your printed jeans as the anchor for your look, style them with complementary tones and contrasting textures. My favourite way to incorporate printed denim into my wardrobe is by reversing the 'jeans and a cute top' formula and opting for statement jeans rather than a statement top. It's an easy styling switch that delivers maximum impact with minimal effort, perfect for those days when you want the outfit to do the work for you.

Relaxed Shorts

Denim and a heatwave may not sound like the most appealing wardrobe choice. However, a longer denim short is surprisingly versatile, comfortable and not to mention practical, whether pounding the pavements in the heat or heading to the beach.

"Proportion plays a key role this season, says Creative Director at Citizens of Humanity, Marianne McDonald. "Longer shorts and the return of the Capri pant shift the silhouette, offering a more thoughtful, elevated approach to summer dressing that feels intentional without being overworked."

The beauty of this trend is that there’s a length and shape to suit everyone. Whether you prefer a board-short length, a shorter cut, or A-line silhouettes that feel more appropriate for smarter settings, there’s an option for every style. Simply add a crisp T-shirt, a shell jacket and a pair of white shoes for an easy spring look, or opt for a billowy blouse and strappy kitten heels for the office.

It sounds deceptively simple and that, frankly, is the point. As the simple shift from a black to white shoe has the ability of making any outfit feel more ready for spring. It lifts a dark wash jean, sharpens a floaty midi and makes even the most thrown-together outfit look far more considered.

Spring/Summer 2026's trends lean into styles that feel fresh and fun, yet remain timeless, flattering and wearable. Think minimalist silhouettes, muted hues balanced with bold prints, and playful colour combinations. It’s a shift away from throwaway trends, focusing instead on investing in pieces that truly work for you.

At the same time, swimwear is tapping into the everyday. Brands across both luxury and the high street are embracing pieces that could easily pass as ready-to-wear bodysuits. Sleek one-pieces can be layered under denim shorts or linen trousers, accented with a scarf tied at the waist. It’s all about choosing designs that fit seamlessly into your wardrobe, whether you’re by the ocean or in the city.

Below, I’ve rounded up the key swimwear trends for summer 2026, with insight from expert designers and buyers shaping the season.

Metal Additions

For those who, like me, fear losing their jewellery at the beach, this trend simplifies accessorising by incorporating built-in embellishments into swimwear. Think statement earring–adjacent details on bikini tops, as seen at Away That Day, or a more modern approach featuring belts and hardware set against an earthy palette of browns.

“Strong feminine energy reigns this season, with Bond girl elements translating into swimwear through low-slung belts and chunky hardware," says co-founders and creative directors of Bali-based brand Cin Cin, Geo Moriarty and Louise Lazarus.

Bold Colourways

Few things bring me as much joy as bright, bold, and statement-making swimwear. "For SS26, swim is all about confident expression," adds Moriarty and Lazarus. An easy way to tap into this is with colour, with the optional addition of embellishments, prints, or textures to elevate the design. "We always prioritise timeless colourways, but we’re very excited to launch our bright and bold seasonal collections for summer," adds founder and CEO of Away That Day, Ingemae Kotze.

The Everyday Bodysuit

If you're investing in a beautiful swimsuit, why not get more bang for your buck with a style that doubles as ready-to-wear? The reality is that swimwear can be expensive—after all, there are many steps in the production process—and if you're seeking styles with hidden scaffolding (as I like to call it), and supportive fabrics, opting for statement bodysuits that with take you seamlessly from beach to lunch and beyond is where I prefer to invest.

"SS26 swim is defined by elevated details that make each piece feel like a statement. It’s about feeling powerful, effortless, and undeniably feminine," says the founder of Kamari Swim, Madison Martina. "We’re seeing a shift toward pieces that feel both statement-making and timeless, designed to transition seamlessly from beach to lifestyle."

Minimal Cuts

Call it the Carolyn Bessette Kennedy effect, but minimalist cuts and monochrome colour palettes are another 90s minimalism trend we're guaranteed to see plenty of on the beach this summer. An expert tip from Kotze to elevate this trend is to opt for a high-cut or a wired silhouette. "I've been seeing a lot of refined cuts, particularly with high-cut leg silhouettes and the use of hidden shaped wires, which give swimwear a unique edge with structured necklines and cut-outs."

When considering colourways, Moriarty and Lazarus note that shades of brown will be key for those seeking more minimalist swimwear options and looking to move beyond classic black and white. "Mocha, latte and all of our favourite brown hues are staying put and trending in a big way, elevated with luxurious Italian lycra with a barely there sheen to shimmer in the sun."

Salone del Mobile is famed as a key interiors event, drawing homeware and design lovers from across the globe. Yet this year, alongside the leading labels in lighting, kitchens, furnishings and stonework, sat a wicker hamper, laundry basket and basket bag—courtesy of JW Anderson and master Yeoman basket maker Eddie Glew of Blithfield Willowcrafts.

The message? A celebration of traditional techniques and materials. A stark contrast to the fast-paced world of consumption we currently live in. And, typically, it's sent basket bags trending once again.

"JW Anderson was the person behind the reinvention of the basket bag as a trend and luxury investment when he was at Loewe, so it simply makes sense that he spotlighted the piece and the craftsmanship that goes into crafting one at Salone del Mobile," says Marie Claire's fashion director Lily Russo-Bah.

Have you had to adjust your work wardrobe during pregnancy?

"Yes, but probably less than I expected. I was pregnant with our first during lockdown, so I wasn’t really able to ‘get dressed’ for work as I was largely at home behind a computer screen. So this time around, I was quite interested to see how I’d approach things. It’s been less of a complete overhaul and more about editing.

The biggest change has been around structure and proportion. Things that once relied on a defined waist (which I’m now very excited to get back to) obviously stop working in the same way, so I’ve leaned into silhouettes that skim rather than cling, longer line dresses, slightly oversized shirts, and soft tailoring. This isn’t a complete change to my norm because the outfits I’m wearing while pregnant, I’d still wear when not sporting a bump.

What I’ve enjoyed is that it’s forced me to be more intentional. It’s made me think about balance, length, and how I feel in what I’m wearing, more so than usual. And that’s made me more confident in my choices, not less."

To what extent have you relied on maternity-specific clothing during your pregnancy?

"Other than underwear, I haven’t really bought maternity-specific clothes. I didn’t want to build a wardrobe with a short shelf life, so I’ve mostly stayed in non-maternity pieces; just sized up or chosen more forgiving cuts. That said, there are a couple of maternity-adjacent items that are absolutely worth it..."

• Satin wide-leg trousers with an elasticated drawstring waist, for some reason, I don’t like the feel of over-the-bump trousers. 
• Low-rise barrel leg trousers or jeans, best worn with oversized shirts.
• One or two well-cut dresses, the kind you can just put on and go, without negotiating fit every time

What are your go-to brands for workwear during pregnancy?

"I’ve gravitated towards brands that already do clean lines and slightly oversized silhouettes well."

• COS and ARKET are brilliant for structured but forgiving pieces. Their dresses and shirts hold their shape without feeling restrictive.
• Toteme, for elevated basics that still feel like you, but with more room.
• Mango dresses have been a lifesaver.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a devoted baggy-jean obsessive. But there are moments when something a little more polished is called for, and this spring I’m pleased to welcome cargo trousers as fashion’s latest wardrobe obsession.

Fashion moves fast these days, and while cargo trousers were first seen on the runways, with most designers opting for utilitarian details such as oversized pockets and khaki colourways, a more refined iteration has caught my eye—and that of stylish women across the globe. Far removed from their baggier Noughties predecessor (think All Saints on Top of the Pops), cargo trousers are not only appearing in a more polished form, but the key is also in the styling..

So, you have the dress—or three, if you're following the current trend—and now you need the finishing touches to make it feel entirely your own. Welcome to the Marie Claire edit of the best bridal accessories, where we've rounded up the wedding gloves, bridal shoes, bags, scarves, brooches and more that are worthy of walking down the aisle with you.

Bridal accessories are, at their core, an opportunity to customise your wedding look. So the shoes, gloves and hat combination you put together is entirely unique to you, whether you opt for something new, something borrowed or something blue.

The questions to consider are plentiful. To veil or not to veil is the first; a pillbox hat, hair pins or a headband all make for excellent alternatives. When I ran my first marathon - the London Marathon in April 2018 - carbon plate shoes didn't exist. I trained - and raced - in a trusty pair of Saucony Ride 10's, which were so well-loved come race day, I'd actually worn a hole through the toe.

But all of that changed a few months later when Nike launched Project Breaking2, a "multi-year initiative aimed at breaking the two-hour marathon barrier." The project saw Eliud Kipchoge and two other athletes partner with Nike, attempting to break the two-hour mark for the marathon for the first time in human history.

Not only did the dedicated Nike team meticulously curate pacing strategies, a flat, optimal course, and personalised nutrition for each athlete, but they also debuted the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly trainer technology, too - and so the "super shoe" was born, a science-backed kit innovation designed to make you that bit faster.

In 2017, Kipchoge wore the Nike Zoom Vaporfly Elite 4%, which is widely accepted as the first-ever carbon-fibre plate running shoe and a sport-changing innovation that promised to not only increase energy return, but improve running economy by 4%.

While it took a few iterations of the shoe before sub two was finally broken, Kipchoge stormed to victory - and history - in 2019, becoming the first and only human on the planet to run a sub two-hour marathon in a prototype of the Nike Alphafly Next%.

Now, you'd be hard-pressed to find a shoe that's not carbon-plated on a start line. They've swept into the mainstream over the past five years, with clever innovations and advancements from the likes of New Balance, adidas and ASICS cementing their status alongside Nike. Even Lidl now sells its own carbon plate shoe, the CarbonLite 1.0, a testament to how widespread super shoe mania is.

Need more convincing? The super shoe global market was valued at approximately USD 1.45 billion in 2024, as per Market Growth Report stats, and is expected to grow 27.63% to over USD 22 billion by 2034.

Basically, they're a really great investment if you're a semi-serious runner looking to chip away at your race times and personal bests. The plate acts as a sort of lever, and the specifically engineered foam, a spring, working together to propel you forward and make you faster.

What is a carbon plate trainer?

According to Emma Kirk-Odunubi, a gait analyst, footwear expert, and qualified sports scientist with over 15 years of experience in the running industry, carbon plate shoes are shoes "including the addition of a stiff midsole plate made of carbon."

And they work, how? "By storing energy from the force we drive into it when we land. As our foot flexes through to toe off the curved plate, then propels you forwards - think of it like a spring."

Ultimately, she goes on, the shoe aids in your quick forward propulsion whilst utilising less of your own energy per stride.

Who are carbon plate trainers best for?

According to Kirk-Odunubi, the main pros span their speed. "Research shows that if you're around 4:30/km or faster, you do get a true benefit from the speed you put into the shoe. And even if the science indicates the shoes don't work as effectively for slower runners, we can't deny the placebo effect. Running in a shoe you know is faster can have a positive reinforcement, whether science states it or not."

That said, they're costly - upwards of £200/250 is the norm - but secondly, they can't be worn daily, only for races. "More needs to be investigated, but research indicates that carbon shoes use muscle activation in the lower limb, which could lead to injury."

Best overall:

I've worn the FuelCell SuperComp Elite v5's for my last ten or so races now, and for thousands of training miles. The premium race day design from the brand, they're unbelievably light, uber cushioned, and made for speed.

They were my shoe of choice when I banked a marathon personal best in December (3 hours 13 minutes), a 5km personal best in January (19 minutes), and a half-marathon personal best in March, too (1 hour 28 minutes).

Long story short, they're fast. The carbon fibre plate and ultra-responsive PEBA midsole work together to propel you forward without compromising on balance or grip. They're also super comfortable and not as rigid as other carbon iterations - I have slightly wider feet and have found them spacious and comfortable, and they're never rubbed, caused blisters, or chafed.

The stack height is much smaller than other iterations on the market, but I quite like that - they're less in your face, and it's also easier to stay balanced wearing them (key for if you're a wobbly runner or have weaker ankles).

Most aesthetically pleasing:

The running world was up in arms when sportswear giant adidas launched the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 2 last year. Promising to be the fastest and lightest carbon plate shoe on earth, they market at a casual £450, around £200 to £250 more than most other competitors.

That said, I've long been a fan of adidas' carbon plate offering, and wore their Adizero Pro 3s for my 3.15 Berlin marathon PB back in 2023.

This advanced and redesigned iteration is lightweight, fast, and propulsive. While testing over an eight-mile run, I kind of felt like I had pogo sticks strapped to my feet; they push you forward that much.

Carefully designed to help you run your fastest times ever, I've no doubt they'd be an excellent choice for your next race (if the budget allows). They're ultra-advanced shoes for the most serious, speed-focused runners looking to chip away at that 1% after fully dialling in nutrition, training, and recovery. Also - the colourway is cute.

Only cons to note: the price point is obviously a barrier to entry for some, they are quite loud as your foot touches the floor, and I did find the fit a touch narrow.

Best for speed work

Rosemary Wanjiru won the 2025 Berlin Marathon in 2025 in the adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4's, with Sheila Chepkirui going on to win the 2025 New York City Marathon in the shoe just a month later.

But the shoe isn't just for athletes, and as I mentioned above, adidas has long been a go-to choice for me. I wore an earlier iteration for my 2023 Berlin Marathon Boston Qualifying time and again for a 1 hour 28 Paris Half a few months later.

Their hero race day shoe, the Adizero Adios Pro 4, is a really easy race day wear. Spacious, roomy, and with great energy return, they do exactly what they promise, feeling like a second skin and actively propelling you through your fastest miles.

I also love the range of colourways, the blue ombre above being my current favourite.

Developed with input from an all-star line-up of athletes from Kenya, Japan, and the USA, as well as thoroughly and rigorously tested in adidas' innovation lab in Germany, it's fair to say they put the shoe through its paces prior to launch.

Best for speed:

When I first tested the ASICS Metaspeed Tokyo, I was actually a bit taken aback by how springy the shoe is. A bit like the adidas, they're widely regarded as one of the most elite carbon plate shoes you can buy for race day

With an advanced dual-foam midsole and an impressive, explosive energy return, it's regarded as one of the lightest (163-170g, which is exceptionally light) and most responsive race day trainers you can buy. I tested them straight out of the box and didn't need to break them in, which I know has been an issue for some with previous ASICS designs, plus found the ASICSGRIP outsole instantly impressive (I didn't feel like I was going to fall, even when testing at around 3.45/minute kms and on wet roads).

I did find them slightly less stable than, say, the New Balance SuperComp's, but there's no denying they are insanely fast and well designed. Invest in these if you're serious about smashing your PB's and have your running form and efficiency down, but skip if you're just looking for a speedy shoe for your local Parkrun.

Best for a PB:

You know a shoe is going to be good when world-class athletes like Eliud Kipchoge wear the brand to smash the limitations of human potential. Ruth Chepngetich also wore Nike shoes to set the women's marathon world record of 2:09:56 in 2024, becoming the first woman to break 2 hours and 10 minutes in the marathon. Nike are an industry leader on this front, leading the charge and inspiring other brands to follow suit.

I ran the Chicago Marathon in 2022 in these Nike shoes and did all of my speedwork leading up to the race in them. They're a really cruisey super shoe - they propel you forwards while still providing stability and comfort.

This current iteration is one of the lightest Vaporfly models ever, with a slimmer midsole, thinner outsole, and redefined upper, and you can tell - you kind of forget you're wearing them, but the responsive ZoomX foam provides you with energy through even the toughest miles.

The only con to note: They do wear out more quickly than other models, which is worth bearing in mind, considering the price point.

Best new release:

Before we even get into the technical review of this super shoe, let me tell you - the new hot pink and black colourway is a vibe.

Released in February, the redesigned shoe is a real all-rounder, prioritising stability and durability thanks to its "slotted" carbon plate and SpeedRoll technology. They're also a slightly lower price point than competitors, so are a good option if you want a shoe that performs but doesn't break the bank. Plus, if you're someone who struggles with weak or wobbly ankles or who is taking on a more cobblestone-y course, like the Paris Marathon, they're an excellent, reliable option.

I tested them over a few speed sessions - two on the treadmill, one on the track - and was impressed with their superior grip. The track was rainy when I tested, and I didn't worry about slipping at any point, testament to the design. They're also really comfortable - I wore them straight out of the box and didn't experience blisters or chafing.

Best carbon plate trainer for a marathon:

My brother absolutely swears by the Nike Alphafly trainers, wearing them for the Valencia Marathon (and the many training miles in the lead up) back in December.

Seriously light, stable, and smooth as super shoes go, the Alphafly 3 has a fully connected ZoomX foam midsole (unlike the Alphafly 2, which featured a split sole). The brand said this promises a smoother transition, and when testing, I came to agree - it's a smoother ride, and also accommodates more runners and a far wider range of foot strikes. I tested over a few speed sessions - again, on both the treadmill and the pavement - and couldn't really fault them, bar them being much more "in your face" design-wise than the more subtle New Balance and ASICS designs. They're bouncy, balanced, and do the job, making you feel fast.

Cons to note: The stack height is big (40mm), and they can be quite loud - anyone who's raced in recent years will likely know of the small "squeak" the shoe can make when the foam hits the ground - but not so much so as to deter you from investing.

Best super trainer without a carbon plate

Last but by no means least, if you're looking for a speedy trainer to see you through faster-paced training miles and races but that's also suitable for easy runs, the ASICS Superblast 3 are a great investment. Still considered a "super shoe", but sans the carbon plate, they offer high-stack cushioning and race-day foam in a shoe you can use day to day, too.

I've been trying mine for around a month now and have found them springy but soft, responsive but a more confident ride. In my opinion, they're a better investment if you want a shoe that does everything thanks to their incorporation of FF Leap cushioning, also found in their Metaspeed range, which makes them less rigid than the carbon plate options on the market.

I reckon they're one of the most versatile "super shoes" currently available, and seamlessly bridge the gap between training miles at a range of paces and race day speed.

For context, running experts advise against wearing carbon plate trainers for all of your runs as they're specifically designed for speed. Not only will you struggle with energy return on slower runs, but you risk overloading your tendons and joints, ultimately increasing your chances of injury. The Superblast 3 promises to be a good middle ground - fast enough for race day, but supportive enough for your steady miles, too.

"Foam rolling, the long standing tool to aid athletes, offers high levels of research (Meta Analyses and reviews) to support its effectiveness. It’s been shown to have moderate increases in range of motion and reductions in muscle soreness. Certainly a good tool to have available for both warm-up and recovery. (Esma Dana et al., 2025). Foam rollers are freely available and there are no real standouts. "Percussion guns, often referred to as massage guns, do have some evidence behind them although there are still mixed results as a whole. The main improvements are small but appear to improve range of movement, flexibility and reduce pain, stiffness and muscle soreness. It’s well worth considering and may just have a psychological benefit that will aid your next run during a busy marathon period. (Buoite Stella et al., 2024). Theragun / Theragun Pro is considered one of the two industry leaders with a range of variety in their product line, but it is classified as a percussive device rather than just massage grade.
