Wait, did Newt Scamander actually have a cameo in the Harry Potter movies?

And breathe...

And breathe...

Words - Emily Baines

Some of the greatest things about the Harry Potter franchise — after the books and movies, of course — would be the fans. Their ideas and insights consistently knock our socks off. And this latest one is quite the doozy. This theory suggests that Newt Scamander might have had a cameo in the third Harry Potter movie…

That’s right, the connections between Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter continue. First, we learned that Fantastic Beasts potentially explains the origin of Dementors. And we all know Newt is tragically in love with Leta Lestrange (a relative of evil Bellatrix Lestrange). But, thanks to this one fan’s eagle eyes, we now know that Newt himself is still around when Harry Potter is exploring Hogwarts!

As imgur user and Harry Potter fan rizkywp shows:

Huh?! That’s Newt Scamander in a Harry Potter movie!

The above shot is from the scene in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban where the Weasley twins first show Harry the tricky Marauder’s Map. The map, in case you forgot, shows the current location of every single person in Hogwarts.

And as you can see, it displays the name Newt Scamander, who is somewhere inside the castle!

Sure, it might just be a nod to Newt’s book (and one of Harry’s textbooks). But, of course, the fans have some other theories as to why Newt is at Hogwarts:

1. Newt is visiting Dumbledore. Remember, we know Dumbledore was Newt’s teacher at Hogwarts. And when Newt was expelled, Dumbledore defended him.

2. Newt came to visit Buckbeak, who, you may remember, was sentenced to death for biting Draco Malfoy. Buckbeak’s bleak sentence would be of special interest to Newt. He is a lover of all animals, after all. Plus, Newt’s mother was a breeder of hippogriffs.

3. This is just a fun easter egg for fans.

4. His name is an accident. But considering how carefully J.K. Rowling plans her novels, we highly doubt this is the answer.

Either way, we’re seriously excited to learn more. Considering we have four more Fantastic Beasts movies in the works, we have a feeling there will be a lot more questions… and, hopefully, answers.
