Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway has been appointed as the latest global goodwill ambassador for women by the United Nations, following the lead of Hollywood figures such as Nicole Kidman and Emma Watson (you can see Emma's first speech in the role here).

Her role will include being a figurehead for the promotion of gender equality and empowerment of women, with the actress focusing a spotlight firmly on the ‘motherhood penalty’, which tackles issues about women in the workplace.

Speaking about Hathaway’s appointment, the UN Women’s executive director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, said: 'The appointment of Anne is timely because this year UN Women is driving hard to foster more positive mindsets and practical arrangements around workplaces that build and support equality for women.'

Anne has said that she feels 'honoured and inspired by this opportunity to aid in advancing gender equality'.

It isn’t the first time that Anne’s fought for women’s rights, having been an advocate for the Nike Foundation in the past and been a voice in documentary Girl Rising, which discussed female education.
