These fancy flats will make you hang up your heels

Because cool (and comfy) shoes do exist...
Over the past few seasons, there's been a definite shift from the high heel, thanks to micro trends such as kitten heels, dad trainers and their summer version, the hiking sandal. There will always be room for a bit of glam, but let's face it, they're not the one for a spontaneous run to the shop or your commute.
While the ballet flat or Mary Jane will always be a classic, this season we’re seeing more masculine pieces like loafers, slides (hello Chloé C logo slip-ons) and embellished slippers. Naturally for summer, the espadrille is high on the wish list, with Chanel and Gucci serving up some delightful options.
They’re a step up from trainers in terms of sophistication and will easily transition in and out of the office if you’re heading off for drinks and a Tinder date afterwards. To keep things cool in this unbearable heat, we’ve also curated a few cute slingbacks and open-toe beauties in case you’re looking for something breathable, yet more office-appropriate than your old pair of Havaianas.
The footwork is certainly fancy this season as many of the shoes we’ve selected below playfully incorporate some of our favourite summer fashion trends. From barely there sandals (look to new-kid-on-the-block Studio Amelia for ultimate minimalist cool) to embellished mules, there are plenty of options to jazz up a summer outfit.
High street retailers like Mango, Zara, Topshop and Office have some gorgeous trendy options at the moment that won’t break the bank and should definitely be one of your first ports of call to upgrade your wardrobe. If you’re ready to take the designer investment piece plunge, Sophia Webster’s jewel-toned flats are utterly timeless and you can’t go wrong with a pair of Gucci trainers in a solid shade.

Penny Goldstone is the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire, covering everything from catwalk trends to royal fashion and the latest high street and Instagram must-haves.
Penny grew up in France and studied languages and law at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris before moving to the UK for her MA in multimedia journalism at Bournemouth University. She moved to the UK permanently and has never looked back (though she does go back regularly to stock up on cheese and wine).
Although she's always loved fashion - she used to create scrapbooks of her favourite trends and looks, including Sienna Miller and Kate Moss' boho phase - her first job was at MoneySavingExpert.com, sourcing the best deals for everything from restaurants to designer sales.
However she quit after two years to follow her true passion, fashion journalism, and after many years of internships and freelance stints at magazines including Red, Cosmopolitan, Stylist and Good Housekeeping, landed her dream job as the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire UK.
Her favourite part of the job is discovering new brands and meeting designers, and travelling the world to attend events and fashion shows. Seeing her first Chanel runway IRL at Paris Fashion Week was a true pinch-me moment.
